Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our guy, our golf expert, our guy low fifty nine,
Will Grimmer, the greatest golfer not named Jack Nicholas in
Ohio state history, and a guy who the last time
the US Open was at Shinnacock played in the event,
and so he can speak firsthand as to the course,
the US Open being played there and maybe help us
pick some winning golfers this weekend. What's up, my friend?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
How are you? I'm doing great? How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I'm well? What memories come to mind when you think
of the twenty eighteen US Open at the same course
it's being played at this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, that was super fun week. Just a hard, hard
golf course. You know, it's often regarded as one of
the toughest courses in America. And I can certainly say
firsthand it. It ate my lunch at times, and it's
a lot of fun. It's just a spectacular property. You're
up in New York, You're in the hamp Dames, you
got views of the water in the Atlantic Ocean. It's
(00:53):
just it's spectacular and just what a cool place. All right?
Speaker 1 (00:57):
So what kind of golfer does this course favor?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
You know, I'm leaning towards a lot of the British
players this week, and there's a lot of people that
are really high on some of these guys because they're
expect it's always windy, but they're expecting kind of some
record wins up there. I think I've heard north of
forty miles an hour maybe on Friday, Thursday, Friday. So
it's going to get If you're in, you're the fan
(01:21):
of watching a lot of bogies and watching professional golfer struggle,
then this is going to be a fun week for
a lot of golfers.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
I like to watch golfers look like me on the course,
So sign me up for that steermaner direction. I'm gonna
start with this, So I you know, I read that
Scottie Shufflers having a down year, which I think has
has maybe, I don't know, put a little bit more
value on him. I'm looking at him right now at
plus six hundred and so I feel like this is
almost too obvious, too easy. Should I take Scotty or
(01:50):
should I take the field?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Probably take the field, But I don't hate Scotty. Scotty
still right now is still one of my favorites. And
we'll get into why here in a second. But I
still like Scotty.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
If not Scotty, who do we like?
Speaker 2 (02:03):
So here kind of my top few picks. I think
Matt Fitzpatrick has won three times this year. He's an
unbelievable win player. You know that that's going to be
crucial this week. Guys that can really flight their shots,
like I said, one three times, and he is a
US Open champion from twenty twenty two, So I do
love I think he's He's my kind of favorite pick
(02:23):
to win right now. Him and Tommy Fleetwood, you know,
And that's what makes these picks and stuff so fun,
right because a couple of months ago I told you
not to pick Tommy at the Masters, and now I
love Tommy because again, conditions change, you're playing different courses,
and that's kind of the fun of picking golf events
compared to other sports, Is I really you know? Tommy
shout sixty three in the final round at chinder Kok
(02:46):
in twenty eighteen, finished runner up. He's had a bunch
of great finishes this year, but I like his odds
of winning an Open, probably more than any other major championship,
and so love him. Love Cameron Young again just because
of his consistent see he's back in his home state
playing some great golf. And then Sam Burns is another
guy who's been been hitting it great. I had a
(03:07):
lot of top finishes this year, was close to winning
last week and the week before at the Memorial and
again probably the best hands down potter on the PGA Tour.
And with greens this crazy, this fastest slope and with wind,
the guys that can put the ball the best are
gonna give himselves a great chance on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
I gotta I got a top five Sam Burns wager
that I like now even more. Is there a long
shot that makes sense?
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Oh, there's definitely some good, some good dark horse picks
for sure. Russell Henley is interesting because I've seen a
lot of people are actually kind of putting him, you know,
on top ten odds. And here's the thing about Russells.
Russell's kind of a you know, golf nerds, kind of
favorite kind of guy. He's been around for a long time.
But I think you're kind of golf casuals aren't necessarily
(03:52):
gonna you know, Russell Henley's not going to jump off
the page. But he plays us opens really really well.
He just won a Colonial this year, and he is
back to back top hens at both the US Open
and British Open. And again with a course like Shinnecock
more of a link style golf course, this is going
to feel more like a British Open than maybe, say,
you know, a US Open, like an oakmand or a
pebble Leech or some of those venues. So again, with
(04:13):
all the crazy wins, not a lot of trees, this
is gonna favor kind of those kinds of windy players
a lot. Alex Fitzpatrick is kind of a really ascending player, actually,
the younger brother of Matt Fitzpatrick, who's obviously been a star.
Three top tens in the last five starts. And again
another great win player and that kind of my real
(04:35):
dark horse that I love is Jackson Super. And again
a lot of people are going to go, who the
heck is Jackson Super? But two top four finishes in
his last three starts. He did play well in the
twenty twenty four US Open, So again a true no
name that if you really just like a great underdog story,
I think Jackson Super, relative to the odds and the
(04:56):
attention that he gets, could be someone that jumps up
on Thursday or Friday and the lead.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
If folks want to learn from one of the best,
you have worked on my swing, and so once you've
worked on my swing, you can pretty much make anybody better.

(05:30):
And you know, it's been a good busy stretch of
a lot of students coming in lately and happy to
take more clients as I get back in town.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Am I the best student you have?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Oh? Hands down that's what I.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Needed to hear. Hands down, that's what I needed to hear.

Thank you.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Appreciate mo
