(00:00):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moeger, Thank you so much for listening today,
Brennanman and Jones on baseball a littlebit later on, I am probably
the only NFL fan who does notwant an eighteen game regular season. We'll
explain why. And a Reds trendthat needs to get reversed soon that coming
up in just about fifteen minutes plus, we have a major announcement at four
(00:23):
thirty three. So the Bengals takeAmarya Simms the nineteenth overall, the eighteenth
overall pick. On Thursday night inthe NFL Draft, a tackle from Georgia
also drafted, Jermaine Burton, whoplayed for a couple of seasons with the
Bulldogs. My cousin. My cousin'smarried to a guy who I think loves
Georgia football more than any of uslove any team in any sport, with
(00:48):
the exception of me and UC basketball. And so I said to him,
like, all right, who's yourgo to guy for Georgia stuff? And
he goes his name is Palmer,Palmer Thoms, And I said, okay,
cool. So I look up Palmerand Riata and I find out the
guy is like following me on Twitter. So that's the guy we're gonna get
on. So he's with us now. He is with Dog's HQ. By
(01:08):
the way, it's Georgia's so it'sDawgs and he's with us to talk about
Amara Simms and more. It's goodto have you that I call him Sims
again. Good God, I amlike I am turning into who am I
turning into? Austin? Somebody youdon't want to be, somebody I don't
want to be. We're gonna talkabout a Marius Mims. I've done it
(01:29):
three times now since Friday. HiPalmer, how are you? I'm doing
well? And you know, Emmsa Marius Simms either way, since he's
getting a good football player, wellgetting a good football player, getting a
big football player, and getting someonewho when I meet him face to face,
I want to make sure I gethis last name right. Uh So
(01:51):
you covered this dude when he wason the field. What did he do?
Yeah? When he was on thefield, he was an incredibly productive
right tackle for the Bulldogs. Youknow, like everybody knows, he's you
know, massive, six foot eight, three hundred and forty pounds, but
he carries it so well. Youknow, almost looked like he could put
on a little bit more weight, you know, just one of those guys
(02:13):
that is a freak of nature inhis build and played that way when he
was on the field. Just youknow, only started eight career games that
Georgia missed, you know, Playtonsix this past Playton seven started six this
past season, but dealt with anankle injury there that kept him out of
the games that he was you know, sidelined for, and so ultimately it's
(02:35):
a situation where you haven't seen aton of him, but when you turn
on the tape and what the tapethat is out there, it's absolutely incredible.
How much of a revelation was hisperformance against Ohio State and the college
football playoffs. Yeah, that wasan interesting time for Georgia because you know,
Amarians had been somebody that was akey contributor for the Bulldogs all season
(02:57):
in twenty twenty two. You know, they've played curely, played you know,
seven offensive linemen and rotated and soAmarus was one of those that was
coming off the bench. And youknow, you you asked Kirby Smart about
it, and you say, hey, I know he wasn't a starter until
that Ohio State game, and Kirbywill stop you right there in your tracks
(03:17):
and say, hey, he wasa starter to us. We viewed him
as a starter. So he madethat first career start, but he was
a starter in the eyes of everybodyat Georgia. And you know, you
you turned on the tape from thatgame and he absolutely held his own.
He was not scared, you know, in any situation, you know,
(03:37):
and made it a very tough situationfor Georgia, tough choice. When they
were able to get Warren McClendon back, who was the original right tackle starter
who's now with the Los Angeles Rams, was picked by them last year,
hed a situation where it was like, hey, this is Amarius guy.
He's almost too good to keep offthe field. I mean, you know,
(03:59):
they didn't want to deal with thetransfer portal situation with him. They
had dealt with that after his freshmanyear in Athens, and it wasn't that
there wasn't a necessarily a clear startingspot for him, but they had to
make it known, hey we wantyou here. You are going to play,
and ultimately, you know, theway that twenty twenty two played out
with him being a regular in therotation and then ultimately starting George's two biggest
(04:23):
games of that season. Absolutely wasa testament to you know, the truth
behind their statements. He suffered theankle injury, came back, and the
sample size you know, once hecame back wasn't huge because there was a
reinjury. But when he did comeback, was there any drop off in
his play? No? In fact, I would say, you know,
some of the best games, someof the best that he played was against
(04:44):
Tennessee after that injury. You turnon the film and it is just,
you know, he is constantly holdinghis own and you know, keep in
mind, they've Tennessee there, They'vegot one of the top edg rushers in
the country for next year's NFL draft, James Pierce. So the fact that
Amarius on a banged up ankle, you know, had had had that surgery
(05:05):
in September, ended up making areturn later in the season in November.
The fact that he was on asurgically repaired ankle and more than holding his
own against one of the top passrushers in the country absolutely tells you everything
that you need to know. Andyou know, ultimately, I look at
the Sency situation and I think thathe's going into a great spot with you
(05:27):
know, Orlando and Trent Brown boththere, He's gonna have an opportunity to
learn. I don't I wouldn't ruleout the potential of him maybe playing some
guard because I think that is somethingthat you look at what he's really good
at. He is a really, really really good run blocker. You know,
absolutely can't improve as a pass blocker'she's certainly adequate as a pass blocker,
(05:47):
and he's going to continue to getbetter as he continues to get coached
up and develops. But as arun blocker, he's more than camp Ball
already. And I think that withthose two tackles in place, you could
put him at guard if he wouldbe more than you know, an adequate
fit there. Palmer Thom's dogs aq HQ with us. You know the
weakness if you're looking at all thedraft guides and they'll say strengths and weakness
(06:11):
is the obvious strength is his size, and the weakness is the relative lack
of experience. Beyond that, isthere an area where he has to get
better? I just think ultimately itcomes down to I would say, adding
on to the strength is his athleticismand that goes hand in hand with the
inexperience. Is it is a it'sa it's not even a rawness. You
(06:35):
know. I listened into what ZachTaylor had to say, and he's you
know, made sure to clarify he'snot raw, he's just inexperience. But
I think that that athleticism makes upfor, you know, a lack of
the experience there. So, youknow, I think he can improve as
a past protector. I think he'sreally good as a past protector already.
He wouldn't have gone in the firstround if he wasn't. But I think
(06:59):
that he can prove that and ultimately, I think that's an improvement that will
come a with experience and be withmore time and development in his athletic body.
Uh. The other player of theBengals draft with Georgia Tiz, Jermaine
Burton, who helped him win anational title, was second on the team
and receiving in the twenty twenty oneseason. Then he goes to Alabama and
(07:19):
stays in the SEC. What stoodout about his time in Athens? Yeah,
I think you look back at histime and Athens, starting in that
twenty twenty season as a true freshman. He stepped right in and made an
impact. You know, was avery much a downfield threat for Georgia.
You know, deal dealt with someinjuries there during that twenty twenty one season,
(07:41):
so they didn't necessarily have him asoften as they would like. That
really resulted in the emergence of Ladmccaukeey, who we saw go in the
second round for Georgia to the Chargersthere. But you know, I think
that in in Jermaine, you've gota downfield threat. Wellbama, I mean,
you know that was their game thispast season with Jalen Milroe and you
(08:05):
know his ability to throw the deepball very well. Jermaine Burton was on
the receiving end of several of thosedeep ball passes. Uh leave Georgia just
because they were stocked at wide receiver. What happened there? Yeah, I
think you know, you look atGeorgia's system and that twenty twenty one season,
keep in mind, brock Bowers wasa true freshman that year, so
(08:26):
they they you knew that Georgia wasgoing to continue to utilize the skill set,
the very unique skill set of brockBowers, and so a lot of
targets were going to go his way, you know, and so I think
that ultimately we were talking about asituation where Georgia doesn't necessarily feature one guy
(08:46):
as much as they utilize the skillsets of everybody. And so Jermaine left
for you know, what he consideredto be greener pastures where he might be
a featured guy. Awesome inside, man, I do appreciate you jumping on
with this. Thanks so much.Absolutely, you got it. That's Palmer
Thom's Georgia beat writer Dog's HQ onAmarus Mims. You know, Austin on
(09:13):
this show, we keep a cupthat I have to put money in every
time I mentioned something like a pitcher'swin total or something like that. Yeah,
we're gonna go double fine for everytime I refer to the Bengals first
round draft choice as Amara Simms.Do you need to like empty out the
bucket of like all the people withthe last name Sims that you know now
to just kind of like three ofthem, right, So Pat Simms,
(09:37):
huh, Phil Simms, Right, maybe that's what this is. I know
a guy named Lance Simms. Ithink there was a former Bengal dB Lashawn
Simms. Maybe Okay, okay,so for whatever, because I did this
on Friday as well, I calledhim Amara Simms and I'm the guy who
in the Bengals drafted Billy Price.Said a lot of people are gonna call
(09:58):
him Brian. Now. Brian Priceended up being fired like fifteen games into
the subsequent season, so it neverbecame an issue. But I remember thinking
to myself, oh my god,I'm gonna call this dude Brian Price.
I don't know who was worse attheir job Billy Price. I was about
to say more successful career, Yeah, Billy or Brian. I mean Billy
(10:18):
played last year in the NFL.Yeah, Brian Price is the pitching coach.
I think he might be with thePadres anyway. Uh yeah, I
don't. I mean, it's we'renot talking about some dude who's going to
struggle to make the team. Hewas the eighteenth overall pick. I can't
keep getting this wrong. There isa musical artist called Mimes in my MS.
(10:41):
It stands for music is My Savior. Maybe that's something you can use
to remember. Music is my sayMims. He wrote a song called this
is Why I'm Hot. Okay, help, I appreciate you jumping in to
tell me. Because God loved Teraran, you know what he would have done.
He would have made me, letme sound like a fool. Just
(11:01):
you know, we got this guyon, he's joining us, and here
I am calling the guys wrong.I did yell pretty loud in your ear.
I apologize, thank you, knowingtrust me, trust me. I
could not appreciate it more. Iwill not get mad at you for doing
that a Marius mimes. In fact, had you said in my ear,
not on the air, hey, dumb bleep, it's Mimes, I wouldn't
(11:22):
have had a hard time with that. So from now on we'll tell Terren
is arran back tomorrow. I believehe is. We're expanding the Fine Cup.
The fine cup goes for whenever Imention a pictures wind loss total,
which I haven't done in three years, or if I use a word that
on the air that you don't usein regular conversation, or now, if
I call Marius Mims Amarus Sims,I will have to throw a dollar into
(11:46):
the Fine Cup. So you're incharge of keeping track of that. Today
it is sixteen minutes after four o'clockfive one, three, seven, four,
nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixsix, seven oh two three seven
big, big announcement coming up injust about eighteen minutes. There is a
reds trend that has to reverse. And like every other football fan is salivating
(12:11):
at Roger Goodell suggesting, Hey,we're gonna have eighteen games here. Not
by the way, the current CBAis not up for like six years.
So if it's gonna happen anytime soon, they're gonna have to like revisit an
existing CBA, and the players aregonna have something to say about it.
I don't want eighteen games, andthere's one basic reason as to why.
I'll explain and we'll take some phonecalls. Next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati's
