Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, baby, okay, okay, yeah, what.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
We all want to do on a Friday? Come on?
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Oh yeah, what are you gonna do?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
What are you gonna do? Come on? We don't want
to work, but we're here, so let's do it. The
Friday Football Frenzy ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. Thanks
for joining us. Your talkbacks come up in our number two.
(01:49):
Charlie Goldsmith comes up in our number two. But we
start today Austin with unfortunate news. With today's show, we're
(02:10):
done early.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
Yeah, it's true.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Two thirty this afternoon, the show is over. Why is
the show over at two thirty this afternoon?
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Well, We've got Kentucky basketball tonight on these airwaves at
Rupp Arena down there in Lexington. And of course their
tip off is at seven, which means their pregame gets
underway at five thirty, which means Bengals pep rally with
Dan and Lapp. Well, that gets moved up from two
(02:41):
thirty to five thirty, which means we're done at two thirty. Wow,
So make your plans accordingly. We're done early. This happens
once or twice a year. Yeah, it's been a while.
We work to it. We push on now. If that's
not bad enough for you, I got more bad news.
Oh my goodness, we don't get to talk to tom
(03:01):
Gilader today. That's right, Tommy g Load Management Gallader, the
voice of FC Cincinnati. You know, some just handle winning
better than others. Had FC Cincinnati lost to Columbus with
Tommy had joined us this week probably, but since they won,
since they've advanced, since they're off this weekend and they
don't play again until next Sunday, that's that daily or
(03:24):
that's that doubleheader, right, the Bengals and Patriots at one.
FC Cincinnati inner Miami's at five, So Tommy will join
us next week, but he's on load management duties today,
So show ends at two thirty. No Tommy g to
talk FC Cincinnati, So our three it'll go quick.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
We're gonna make our weekly picks at two o'clock and
then we're going to finish the show after that.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
You got a football in the Natty, that's right. We
got an added one of those, that's right.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
So as I met, we've got Charlie Goldsmith at one,
We've got our normal talkbacks at two, all at one
twenty five. So that means if you want to take
time out of your Friday to talk to us outside
of a talkback, you need to give us a call
an hour number one five, one, three, seven, four nine,
fifteen thirty Thursday Night Football. Let's start there. Last night, Austin,
(04:16):
let's start with the New England Patriots. Tell you what
I've not been able to watch many games start to
finish of the Patriots this year. That one last night
I did watch, and I was impressed, and I had
high expectations going in because of what the Patriots had done,
what they've been doing going into last night's game. They
now sit atop the NFL with eight straight regular season
(04:40):
wins and all the hub is about one Drake May.
I watched that game last night, could not be more
impressed with Drake May. The way he moves in the pocket,
his ball delivery, keeping the eyes down the field, his
command of that Patriots offense, and really what he's doing
with those around him. Stefan Diggs mac collins. Mac Collins
(05:04):
has been great for New England, Hunter Henry to Mario Douglas,
Travion Henderson five catches for thirty one yards in a
touchdown last night. Trayvion also ran at nineteen times for
sixty two yards and two more touchdowns. That is as
impressive as a Patriot offense as you'll see often. And
(05:24):
what I fear for the Patriots is that each week
that goes by, Drake May's getting more and more comfortable
in that system, which is going to make them more
and more dangerous going forward.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Yeah, I mean, the thing with me just stood out
how calm he was in the pocket. Now, the Patriots
offensive line played pretty well. It wasn't like he had
a bunch of stuff in his lap that he had
to deal with, but when it did happen, he was
able to climb, He was able to keep his eyes up.
He didn't panic, he was able to move outside the
pocket when he had to. Just very very impressed with
(05:58):
Drake May obviously. Trevion Henderson. I think there's been five
rookies that have had three touchdown games already this season.
There were zero a year ago, which is kind of
hard to believe. By the way. Two of the five
was that Ohio State tandem from last year quin Shawn
Judkins with the Browns, Traveon Henderson last night with New England. Now,
(06:20):
I did think that New England's defense wasn't great. They
played against the Jets, and if they would have been
playing against maybe a better offense, there's more points on
the board there, So I think maybe that's something to
keep an eye on. Even that that Jets did run
it for five yards of carry they did. I mean
that first, that opening drive by the Jets. I mean that,
if you're a Jets fan, pack it up, go home,
(06:43):
you're good. That was the best moment of the best
twenty five minutes of your season, it felt like on
that opening drive. But New England's nine to two.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Man Yeah, to your point, I am concerned about the
New England offense. I do think there are opportunities and
vulnerabilities that teams can take it and score against New
England if that becomes the case next Sunday. Of course,
the Bengals will have to get through this weekend first.
That's a road trip against the Steelers. We'll talk about
that here in our number one. We'll make picks on
(07:14):
that in our number three. MVPs were announced last night
Austin show hey Otani yes his fourth MVP, fourth unanimous
MVP selection last night for Sho hey Otani. He captured
all thirty first place votes, Kyle Schwarber twenty three of
(07:39):
the second place votes. Juan Soto and Geraldo Perdomo of
the Diamondbacks accrued the rest. Shoe Otani has won four
MVPs over the last five years, again all unanimous, and
only now Barry Bonds has more with seven. I just
(08:02):
we say it every year and certainly in the playoffs
this year. He's the best player on the planet and
it shows through each and every time that guy is
able to take the field. It is a special, special
thing to coincide with the timing of being able to
watch Shoheo Tani in his greatness. Aaron Judge in the
American League is your MVP as well? This was a
(08:29):
little bit more narrow. Judge takes seventeen first place votes,
cal Raley had thirteen, and they swapped in second place
Kyle Raley seventeen and Aaron Judge thirteen. So this was
a very very very close race Austin, Aaron Judge edges
out cal Raleigh. National League, no brainer. Did they get
(08:50):
it right in the American League with Judge.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Yeah, I think so. I mean there's just a plethora
of statistics that you can look at for Aaron Judge
where he was just better than cal Raley. I do
think the idea of being a catcher and doing that
every single day is remarkable for cal Raley and for Seattle.
But I mean Aaron Judge from a offensive standpoint, it's undeniable.
(09:17):
The way that he hits for power, the way that
he hits for average walking, you know, all of it.
It just makes sense why Aaron Judge was the MVP. Again.
I mean, I don't know that anybody would have had
an argument either way, Like sure, both dudes were deserving.
It was close. I think seventeen and thirteen the votes
were flipped first and second place votes for each So.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah, some college hoops last night. It was a good one.
Braydon Smith, I think the best point guard in the
country for Purdue. They went on the road and beat
Alabama eighty seven to eighty. You get some Friday night
college hoops tonight as well. Kentucky back on the court
against Eastern Illinois Michigan's at TCU Arizona Ucla. Arizona's the
(10:00):
fifth ranked team in the country. Ucla is number fifteen
and back on the court tonight without tweeting after their
last loss the Xavier Musketeers in the Iowa Hawk Guys, Austin,
Any guess this game is in Iowa, It's eight pm tip.
Any guess as to what the spread is tonight?
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Well, I saw it this morning, okay, and at that
time it was sixteen and a half, down to fifteen
and a half, down to fifteen Okay. Now it was
fourteen and a half yesterday. So maybe you know, they
just can't figure out what they like on this game.
I don't know, Yeah, I mean what, I thought it
would be more than that, to be honest, I thought
it would be closer to twenty.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Based on what we've seen so far this year from Xavier.
Now can they turn it around? I think it'll be
very interesting to see. But I also tell your seeing
gotta believe it. I also learned this morning that Fran
McCaffrey is not the coach at Iowa anymore.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
I didn't know that either.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Yeah, apparently he's gone.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
They said that the dude from Drake used to be
the coach of Drake coaches Iowa. I didn't know any
of this either.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Good to know. Tomorrow the Louisville Cardinals in action against
the Bobby's from ou that's at the Young Center, and
I have.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
To think the Cards are looking ahead to the Bearcatt too.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
You worry about the Bobby's.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Bobby's can play a little bit. Now.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
There's a big one in the Hall of Fame series
at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts tomorrow, the third rank
Yukon Huskies take on the seventh ranked BYU Cougars BYU,
though Austin could be without Kennard Davis, who is a
starter but was arrested on suspicion of a duy following
(11:42):
a crash in Provo on Thursday.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
This coming before the matchup against Yukon. He is a
six to six transfer from Southern Illinois. So they are
looking into those allegations right now in BYU, but certainly
that would not help the Cougars in that one. Any
other noteworthy news, Oh, I don't even know if I
want to mention this. Fourteen have been charged in the
(12:08):
mafia backed betting ring involving athletes Austin. This coming from
the Joseph Little Joe Perna family, a member of the
I believe it's Luciesi Lucesi crime family. Yeah, his associates
ran a nationwide network of bookmakers used offshore websites to
(12:30):
facilitate approximately two million in bets between twenty twenty two
and twenty twenty four. So fourteen have been charged. Little Joe,
his sons, stepson, nephews and others all charged with racketeering, conspiracy,
gambling offense, and money laundering. Wow, so that is where
(12:51):
things stand. I can't believe we're talking about the mafia
on a Friday. That just that worries me. That story
is gonna have It's gonna be a lot of twists
and turns. I believe, without a doubt we'll take our
first break. Five one three seven four nine, fifteen thirty.
This is the Friday Football Frenzy. We'll take your phone

Speaker 6 (13:24):
From locker room whispers to stadium roars, He's got it
all Moeger Today at three pm on ESPN fifteen thirty
in the NATI, brought to you by Postman Law on
ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
All right, welcome back. It is Football NATI on the
Friday Football Frenzy, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. You
know one other topic I was looking at last night Austin,
when when these two teams were playing. I don't think
it should be overlooked the job that New England has
(14:08):
also done with Drake May and protecting him. Did that
stand out to you at all? I mean last night
I thought Will Campbell was as solid as you could be.
But they also they took in the seventh round, they
took Marcus Bryant, they have, in my opinion, got it
(14:33):
right with Drake May. But I also feel like they
got it right in protecting Drake May. And that's something
we've talked about here from the start. Have the Bengals
done enough to protect their quarterback? I think if you
look at what they do in New England and you
look at how Drake May was in the pocket. You
mentioned the pocket being strong pretty much all night. He
was only sacked one time last night and was only
(14:55):
hit four times. But as good as Drake May has
been Austin, I think think you credit New England as
well for what they've done in building around Drake May.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Yeah, and I remember watching in the offseason. The Patriots
had this this offseason series that they did kind of
like their own in house version of Hard Knocks, and
they talked about their free agency and their mentality around
bringing different guys in. One of the guys they brought
in was Morgan Moses, a long time veteran tackle who
(15:27):
could come in and bring some stability and a veteran
presence to that room. Couple that with Will Campbell, who
they spent their first round pick on, and that's a
pretty good start to building your offensive line, And you're right.
I mean there was a graphic at one point that
I think the Next Gen Stats broadcast last night showed
(15:48):
that was like the heat map of the pocket and
it was green a lot. Yep. Now that might say
a little bit about the Jets, but also the Patriots
didn't allow maybe some lesser known players to get after
Drake May. But yeah, it's done a great job. It
starts with that.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
Yep, I think it and again it just you'd go
back to it because it's been such an issue here
with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Well, it's an issue across it is. It's an issue
in a lot of places like there are you think
about Bryce Young running for his life early on in Carolina.
We've seen that across the league. Cam Ward is not
being protected very well right now. So yeah, I mean
offensive line, it's an issue across the NFL. It's especially
difficult when you're putting a young quarterback into a situation
(16:32):
which he can't be protected.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah. I just when you look at look at what
they did this year. They went and got Will Campbell
in the first and Traveon Henderson in the second. I mean,
that's that's getting it done. They got Jared Wilson from
Georgia in the third their center. They play some guard
as well, so they they nailed. It was it was
odd the way New England was structured in the offseason
(16:56):
because it felt like they were so active in the offseason, right,
and you're like many building something there. And it was again,
like we talked earlier in the week, the moves New
England made in the offseason Austin, and it was a
lot of them. It stood out because they were making
so many of them. But for many of them, you
felt like, yeah, I can see that that makes sense.
The personnel matches the scheme that Mike Brabel's put in place.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
And they were also not afraid to move on from
players that no longer fit that. Yeah, Kysh Jugger for
an example, as at that safety position in the way
that that went. So I know there was another one
too that I might be blanking on who it was,
but yeah, I mean they were not afraid to do that,
and I think moving forward, New England has more cap
space than anybody in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Yeah, they moved on. They moved on from Keon White
as well.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
Their defensive end, Keon White and Kyle duggery and oh,
by the way, the Patriots have a guy who's an
inside linebackers coach calling their defense. Oh, because their defensive
coordinator had a sickness or an illness or something. He's
away from football right now. Dudes never called defense before,
and yet they've found a way to kind of piece
some of these guys together. So yeah, I mean, just
(18:01):
a not a surprise that the Patriots and Mike Rabel
are doing what they're doing.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
It's also a team going into twenty twenty six, Austin
that's going to have eleven draft picks, so they have
stockpiled draft picks as well, and they have done so
moving on from their offensive line coach and defensive line
coach from last year. Huh who are both here in Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Interesting?
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Now we've spent time talking about the Patriots, so let's
go to Boston and talk to John for a moment.
Speaker 7 (18:30):
Hi, John, Happy Friday, Tony, Happy Friday. Austin, they start
setting me up because anytime I can bash Scott Peters and.
Speaker 5 (18:38):
Jam Montambery, I love the opportunity.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
I mean, it's really yeah.
Speaker 7 (18:44):
I mean, the Patriots go out and get a real
offensive line coach, Doug Marone, and we see the difference
this year. Heck, I probably could coach the Patriots defensive
line better than Jerry Montgomery did last year. But you know,
it's interesting what you say. And again, if the Bangals
are going to move on from Zach Taylor, I looked
to New England as a possible place to land your
next head coach. And I know Josh McDaniels was a
(19:05):
disaster in Denver and with the Raiders, but let's kind
of look a little deeper into that. When he got
to Denver, he was thirty three years old, he didn't
have a quarterback. He traded Jay Cutler for some reason,
they just didn't get along. He had Kyle Orton. Then
he drafted tin team got so he never had a
quarterback in Denver. He goes to the Raiders, he has
Derek Carr, who's middle of the road quarterback. Then after
that was Jimmy g and a bunch of like unnamed
(19:28):
backups and then they moved on from there. When he's
had quarterbacks, obviously Tom Brady, let's put him aside. But
look what he did with Matt Castle in two thousand
and eight. I mean, the Patriots went eleven and five
after Brady got injured. Castle was a borderline Pro Bowl
player in two thousand and eight and had a nice
little curry after that. In Kansas City twenty twenty one,
Mac Jones looked like a first round quarterback one year
(19:48):
with Josh McDaniels and again, the thing about Josh mcthaniels
that I love so much is that a multiple offense.
Just picture Josh McDaniels and Joe Burrow together. Now again,
I think Joe would have to give in a little
bit because with McDaniels, half the snaps are under center.
You can throw from under center, you can run from
the shotgun. You know, it's got that multiple offense. They'll
(20:09):
they'll run twelve personnel, twenty two personnel. Last night they
use six linemen. To your point, guys, the offensive line
played well. They use an extralignment to protect Drake Man.
I mean, those two guys together would be would be
pretty interesting. But the mistakes that mcgame has made you
have to rectify. Don't give him complete control or any
control over player personnel because he's not very good at that.
(20:32):
And then bring in a high level defensive coordinator. Let
him concentrate on that and let him work with your
quarterback in your offense.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
I think it would be fantastic.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
This is an offense that Tom Brady said if Aaron
Rodgers played in it, he would throw for six thousand yards.
And that might be hyperbolic, but I don't think it's
that far off.
Speaker 8 (20:48):
I mean, that's how good this is.
Speaker 7 (20:50):
Before before I go, guys, I love to hear your comment.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
But one more thing I want to touch on.
Speaker 7 (20:54):
If last night doesn't verify how bad the Bengals defense is,
I don't know what does. Because in the last the
most recent five games, the Jets have scored six, eleven, thirteen,
and fourteen points and oh, by the way, thirty nine
against the Bengals in the most recent five games stretch
in terms of offensive yards eighty two against Denver, one
sixty nine against Cleveland, two twenty against Carolina, two forty
(21:16):
five last night, and five oh two against the Bengals.
I mean, Denver head over five hundred yards offense against
the Bengals will Week four, and Denver can't break ten points.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
At this point.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
I mean they like winning games thirteen to eleven or
ten to seven, and this defense, I'm starting to think guys,
this defense is really a comedy troupe, like they're here
to just like humor us.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
So incredible because it's that bad, isn't it.
Speaker 7 (21:40):
I mean, when you're being compared to the two thousand
and eight Detroit Lions who went winless, that's those are
the two worst defenses in century.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Oh man, that's bad.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
I was thinking that when Austin brought up how the
Jets move the ball early last night, and I'm thinking, man,
if that was the Jets moving the ball, I can't
even begin to reach think about what they did to
the Cincinnati Bengals. I mean, that is it's a great
example of just how oft and how bad this this
Bengals defense is right now percent.
Speaker 8 (22:11):
With you, yeah, and then the Patriots defense.
Speaker 7 (22:14):
The biggest issue for Patriots defense is starting games. It
just doesn't seem like they're really with it. They've they've
given up scores I believe in eight of eleven games
on the first possession by the opponents. And Austin, one
of the players you were thinking of, Jabrill Peppers, was
another state in the Patriots moved gone from another guy
like Duggar, who's an inside the box hard hitter, well
(22:34):
that's kind of outdated in the NFL today.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
I mean, you need need.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Guys back there that can cover.
Speaker 7 (22:38):
But it's really pleasant to see. Drake May obviously is
an MVP candidate. I think Drake May and Joe Burrow
probably the two most natural throwers of the football in
the league. These are as Drake May, that thing is
like beautiful to watch, awesome, And you know that Tony
is a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
He's great to watch.
Speaker 7 (22:55):
And I think those two guys maybe we'll see them
face off a week from Sunday, let's hope.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Yeah, ye, John, thank you so much for the phone call.
Have a great weekend, man. That's sobering. You brought up
the point of how the Patriots defense looked a little
vulnerable last night, and it's that Jets offense and the
Jets scored fourteen.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
I mean, he is right in the sense that it's
almost funny, like how bad the Bengals defense is. I
mean I remember like watching Colson Loveland run into the
end zone for the Bears, and I was laughing because
I was like, that is just it's incredible how awful
they are. It's almost comedic. And he's right, and I
(23:39):
think we have a week or so, two weeks away,
and you kind of start to forget or maybe come
up with some sort of idea that, ah, that maybe
they might be a little bit better. Here's some numbers
from the previous game, or here's the numbers from previous seasons,
and you think, surely it can't get worse. Well, it
has over and over and over and over and over again.
(24:00):
And as we're speaking, Zach Taylor just officially ruled out
Trey Hendrickson and Shamar Stewart for Sunday. YEP, Cedric Johnson,
come on down. It's tough.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
We will have a chance to discuss those things with
Charlie Goldsmith. He will join us at one o'clock today,
uh before now, and then let's uh, let's go through
some of the breakdown of Sunday's game. And we've got
some Jamar Chase audio from yesterday as well. We'll get
all that in along with any more of your phone calls.
Five one thirty. It's since he three sixty the Friday
(24:31):

Speaker 6 (24:34):
You've been listening to Football in the NATI on ESPN
fifteen thirty, The official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
Hey, Alexa, what's going on in the NFL?
Speaker 6 (24:49):
Getting ESPN fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
Welcome back. You are listening to Cincy three sixties Friday
Football Frenzy on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station thanks
to Skyline Chili. Here in our number one break down,
a little bit more about Sunday's game in just a
moment for now. To the phone lines. Brian is calling in.
What's up? Brian?
Speaker 8 (25:21):
Hey, what's up Tony? So good job guys as usual. So, Tony,
I'm gonna ask you a question. The first thing you
need on the defense. You need a defensive front, Is
that correct?
Speaker 4 (25:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:38):
I mean for multiple reasons, uh, stopping the run and
providing pressure on the quarterback. It doesn't matter if if
Darrell Reeves is out there at the corner. If you
can't pressure the quarterback, you can't cover guys, exactly.
Speaker 8 (25:49):
I just got to argue with somebody about this. You
have no pass for us and you can't stop the run.
I don't care if you got be on in Rodney
lot back here, You're not going to start anybody.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Yeah, especially in today's football with how athletic, the wide
receivers are and the routes that are being run. If
you cannot put apply pressure, it doesn't matter who's on
the back end of your defense.
Speaker 8 (26:12):
Absolutely, But you know I think that and last time
I said this, you guys Pop proved me.
Speaker 9 (26:18):
Man.
Speaker 8 (26:19):
I always look at I always look at the NFL
mock draft. Right they still have the Bengals taking a
cornerback of the first pick. Every every mack I look
at except one I think had them taking the defensive
tackle from Miami, who is an animal. I hope they
do that. But secondly, can you move up and is
(26:45):
there a way for the Bengals to leverage picks later
picks and move up in the draft?
Speaker 3 (26:53):
You like to think it's it's historically just not what
they do. I mean, it's doable, but it's just not
how the Bengals operate. So it just never feels like
there's any any movement towards that or anything that would
lead you to believe, Okay, that's going to be different.
It's just not who they've been is.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
I don't know that that a cornerback would be a
bad thing, though, would it?
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Their inability to rush the passer doesn't matter for right now.
So that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
They have so many picks because they need play.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
Or the issue. So in late July, Pro Football Focus
ranked their top secondaries in football going into the twenty
twenty five season. Austin, would you like to guess who
number one was? For Pro Football Focus?
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Who's that?
Speaker 3 (27:35):
The Baltimore Ravens. Okay, the Baltimore Ravens defense has been
bad for much of the season. Baltimore ranks third from
the bottom in the NFL at sacks this season. So
what many that follow football believed to be the best
secondary on paper is actually one of the worst defenses
right now in points allowed because they can't get after
(27:56):
the passer. They are tied for dead last in the
NFL and sacks the forty nine Ers and the Jaguars.
Speaker 8 (28:03):
Wow, that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (28:06):
Lastly, I'll say the Bengals problem on defense man, with
these dbs is they do too much grabbing. We learned
in pee wee football you get your butt low and
you and you drive through the ball carrier. You know,
you get down break down. I see a lot of
(28:27):
guys out of position with the Bengals, but the tackling
is horrible. They try to grab everybody. Yeah, getting hitting
and rapping. I don't understand. It takes people's legs out.
I saw the game with the Bengals against the Packers.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
It was the end of the game.
Speaker 8 (28:49):
I think it was Craft that scored that touchdown. Late
in the game, I saw Cam Taylor Brick run to
the next to the pylon. He had a shot at
the guy and he stopped. I mean, I just think
they're scared to mix it up. They're probably worried that
if they get hurt, you know, that'll move them down
(29:12):
on the death charge. They won't get a chance to play. Sorry,
I'm out of breath from getting my walk in. But
you know, it's it's just there. It looks like they
the defensive backs are there to collect the pay check.
Matter of fact, I saw camp tell the Britt downtown
a few weeks ago partying the night before the game.
(29:36):
I mean, it's it's ridiculous. So they need to have
a meeting and says, if you don't want to be here,
you're not committed. You just here to collect a check.
You need to move on. But with that, yeah, I
say twenty twenty six.
Speaker 9 (29:53):
Love.
Speaker 8 (29:53):
I love the josh Or it's his name, but josh
Gy I love that. I love that. Pa are either
Bill Chick, Let's get mill Chick. Let's call Billy Chick.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Brian, thank you for the call, man, appreciate it. A
couple of things there. One I don't know about worrying
about injury Austin. I will say this, I don't think
the Bengals defense is tough.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
I agree with that.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
I don't think they do mix it up. I don't
think they make you feel them during the game. I
don't think they I don't think the game ends and
the opponents like, man, what did we just go through?
That was a battle, that was a war. I think
they do make it easy. Tackling has been a huge issue.
You can certainly echo that, but yeah, it is. It's
(30:39):
been a comedy of airs on the defensive side of
the ball, but more than anything, and I do agree
with Brian. I think it's a soft defense and it's
a defense, as you mentioned in the last segment, we
now know is going to be without again. Shamar Stewart
and Trey Hendrickson on Sunday. Where does the toughness on
the defense come from? Who does it come from? Like?
(31:01):
Who is that guy I don't know, and that I
think at the at the very core of it is
one of the biggest issues with this defense, and it's
a defense. I went back to this for the last
couple of days, Austin. Do you remember how tense it
was after the Bears game in that locker room.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Yeah, I mean it was.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
It felt like it was about to boil over, right,
And had this team not went on a bye week,
it might have boiled over. Because the game happened Sunday.
The defensive players left, Jamar Chase and Chase Brown talked
about the defense and there were choice words shared, and
then the defense comes back Monday and then they talk.
But then everyone kind of goes away, and the bye
week happens and it settles a lot of that, and
(31:45):
then you get back to work this week and you
don't really get caught up in that. Why Joe Burrow's
back on the field, Like, man, it's good to see Joe,
and that's your focus. If the Bengals lose on Sunday, Austin,
in a setting where they lose like thirty five to thirty,
there's no way the locker room remains intact, right, I
(32:08):
would think it would get pretty ugly. It would have
to at that point, it would have to. What is
your biggest fear for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
I don't know that I fear anything.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Yeah, I mean it is a pass rush that, from
a team point of view, is second in the NFL
in sacks. They are significantly behind the Denver Broncos at
forty six. Pittsburgh is tied with Seattle at thirty two,
so they do still get after the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
I would get I guess it would be what Moe
has talked about a lot, which is Joe Flacco turning
into a pumpkin and them kind of getting blown out. Yeah,
that I guess is the biggest fear. Yep. But yeah,
obviously the defensive side of the ball. Oh yeah, I
mean everything about that. I mean I don't I've come
(32:57):
to grips with who they are. They're not good. I
expect them to give up thirty five plus points. Oh
My thing is can the Bengals offense keep pace with that? Right?
That's really what it comes down to.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
That's like, just just listen to what you just said
on you think that the number starts at thirty five?
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Yeah, I think the Bengals will need to score at
least forty to win. Oh that's tough, man. They had
to score thirty three to be I.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Completely agree with you. Just hearing it insane, that is
insane to me.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
Well, I mean that's.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
That is We're talking about historically one of the worst
defenses in football history.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Yeah, I mean yeah, based off of DVOA, they are
on pace to be the worst since the Niners in
the UH I think seventy nine San Francisco forty nine
er defense, which was statistically the worst of all time.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
They are on pace or they are listed for Sunday
as having the highest point total in the NFL, of course,
forty nine and a half. We'll take a break, we'll
come back. We'll try to gather one or more phone
calls and some Jamar Chase audio to finish up our
number one on the Friday Football Friends at ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Team thirty Welcome back Friday Football
(34:15):
Friends and ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Charlie Goldsmith
will join us in just a few minutes. We got
some Jamar Chase audi. We can need to plug in
here at the end of our number two as well.
It's just odd Austin. For much of the week, I
thought our phone lines were down. I know, we didn't
get hardly any calls. Everyone was in just the bye
week mode. And now it looks like people are starting
to wake up a little bit. So let's take some
(34:37):
of these phone calls. Brian, what's up?
Speaker 9 (34:41):
What's going on?
Speaker 10 (34:43):
How you guys doing this afternoon?
Speaker 9 (34:44):
Good?
Speaker 3 (34:44):
How are you?
Speaker 7 (34:46):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (34:46):
Very well?
Speaker 10 (34:47):
So I to answer your question, Tony, it's supposed to
come from the coach and the defensive coordinator.
Speaker 11 (34:53):
What does this get the.
Speaker 10 (34:54):
Attitude of being like tough and like accountable. I think
that's where it's supposed to are.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Yeah, that's fair.
Speaker 10 (35:02):
I mean, I mean, if that's it, it's like, I
don't understand how they're having this historically bad defense. They're
showing up on Tuesday or wins whatever day. I think
they get a day off after the game where dudes
aren't there because they got cut. What what's the I mean,
there's got many people that are willing to make tackles
on other guys practice squads, Like where's the accountability from
(35:25):
the front, from you know, from the top, Because that's
that's what happened with other teams that play this way?
They cut dudes, like, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Yeah, Brian, I appreciate the call. That's fair. Look, I
think Austin, there's a fine line in miss tackles and
aggressive miss tackles, right, Like, if they're just flying around
like all right, they're they're they're they're playing hard, they're
going after it. Just coming to me though, it just
feels like passive miss tackles, like they're not attacking. I
(36:00):
think there's a difference there. I think that's more of
the frustrating side with this team is they're not just
going out and just saying, you know what, screw it,
let's just go play a thousand miles per hour. And
that was all we talked about in the offseason. Right now,
Golden's gonna simplify things so these guys can just play
fast and confident. Where's that at.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
I don't even know if it was that as much
as he just has his finger on the pulse of
developing young players. Oh yeah, they really he finds a
way to you know, respond to there. They respond to
his okay.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Buzzwords, development, fast, simplification.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
What's up, Greg, Hey, how's it going good.
Speaker 12 (36:39):
I just wanted to ads you were talking to the other,
the guy the other just a little while ago about
miss tackles and not tackling, tackling propertly. Well, you know
it's been a while now, a few weeks, quite a
few weeks. Well, I you know, wanted out of the
offensive line was fact, you know, some mean ass guys
pushing some guys back, maybe raising hell. And what I'm
(37:01):
getting at, I'm just adding to his conversation. I think
this team out there, this whole team, I've been watching
football for a long time, and this whole team is
soft as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
Yeah, I think from top to bottom, I think they
are a I don't think they're a tough team. Greg,
thank you for the call, man. We appreciate you as always.
I don't think they're tough on either side of the ball,
I will say, Austin, I think I think Fairchild and
Rivers have a little a little of that dog in them.
I think they got a little bit of a toughness there.
But across the board, I don't think Orlando Brown Junior
is a tough player. I don't think he's blocking through
(37:36):
the whistle, But I do think that that there are
pieces coming together a little bit for them. Charles, what's up?
Speaker 11 (37:48):
Yeah? I just want to add to one what one
of the other callers that it seems like Zach Taylor
is not holding the these coaches, assistant coaches and coaches
under him accountable. I mean, where where's Zach Taylor at?
What he He's got to see the same things that
(38:11):
you and that you and Austin are saying.
Speaker 8 (38:13):
Where's he at?
Speaker 11 (38:14):
Where's that Zach Taylor? It seems like he's in his
office making out of lunch menu or something, and while
the other teams are out there, I mean, all the
players are out there just doing whatever.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
I mean, where where's Zach Taylor on all these issues?
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Yeah, Charles, I appreciate that. Yeah, thank you. I don't
know if that's a Zach Taylor thing, Austin, I don't
know if that part is a Zach Taylor thing. There's
only so much you can do as the head coach.
If if guys are out before games or whatever, that
there's only so much you can do. These are professionals
as well, grown men. They got to handle themselves accordingly.
A couple more phone calls then we'll get to Charlie.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
Also, I do think your Zach's held guys accountable.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Dudes have been benched, yeah, Jermaina Burton is a good example.
There's only so much a coach could do with what
guy do on their free time. Correct as adults, it's
not like they're going to class in college and on scholarship.
They've got to handle themselves like professionals. A couple more here.
What's upbout him?
Speaker 4 (39:13):
Adam? Adam?
Speaker 5 (39:15):
Oh, yeah, sorry about that?
Speaker 4 (39:18):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (39:19):
What's up?
Speaker 8 (39:21):
Just thinking about Burrow?
Speaker 13 (39:22):
No one I've heard anyone mention and what kind of
numbers would he be putting up if he was in
Still we got Flacco in there, who's killing it? I mean,
I couldn't imagine what is Burrough putting up fifty? Are
we actually winning these games against with no events? I'm
just curious, is what do you guys think? And he's
going to be able to come in and turn something around?
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Yeah, Adam, thank you man. I feel like they could
have I don't think they could have done much more.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
I feel like they could have won the Green Bay game. Yeah,
I think the Detroit game would have been at least
interesting if not for the atrocious play of Jake Browning. Yeah,
I don't know that it would have mattered in Denver
or Minnesota all that much. But I mean my answer
to that is Joe would be putting up numbers like
(40:08):
he did last year. Yeah, he's just that type of
player in this offense is humming against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ryan Rico punted the ball three times against the New
York Jets. Ryan Rico punted the ball three times against
the Chicago Bears. Ryan Rico punted the ball once. I
don't think Joe Burrow was going to do that much more.
(40:29):
In all honesty, it's fair. What a way to finish
up this hour, Austin, Look at this.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Mike is back.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
He's back, Mike.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
What's up?
Speaker 5 (40:38):
What's going on?
Speaker 3 (40:40):
Great to hear your voice, Mike.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
Yeah, I've been listening to every day. I just had
a lot of things going on.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
You had, you had a lot of You've had a
lot of people looking forward to hearing from you.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
Yeah, that was encouraging. It really didn't help lift my
spirits made me feel good. So thank you to everyone.
Thank you to everyone. I really appreciate it. They I
was thinking about this defense. I try not to because
I'm already sick enough, I already have trouble keeping food down.
But I think back like the Raiders, and I don't
(41:14):
know who cares about this, but I can't help but
think about the Raiders back in the sixties had a
bunch of bad boys on defense. I mean they were
known to be dirty and nasty and mean and commit
personal fouls and nobody cared. And and they had a
linebacker or a defensive end called the Mad Store ten
Ted Hendricks and Hileosto and all these complete animals, Phil Villapiano,
(41:38):
Willie Burn and then the Steel Curtain with the Pirates.
These guys didn't miss Tutle. These guys played with ferocious intensity.
And then and then the Legion of Doom not that
long ago up in Seattle. This seems to be missing
in the NFL, and I it's gotten The whole league
has gotten softer.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
If you ask me, Mike, I think of the ball
more Ravens with Suggs and Ray Lewis and Ed Reid,
you know you think of And I know people at
the time didn't buy in, but how many people would
take vontez perfect in his Prime on this Bengals defense
right now, did he get penalized at times? Yes, was
he over the limit? But man, he wasn't going to
(42:18):
take anything. He was going to be the one delivering.
He was going to play through the whistle. You have
to have a toughness about you. The most successful teams
on defense are the teams that when that game is over,
you're sitting around in the locker room like, man, what
in the world did we just go through? That team
is physical, they fly around. It's just it exhausts you.
(42:39):
And you play against this Bengals defense you feel none
of that.
Speaker 5 (42:43):
What now when you were playing, did you have a
particular game or a team that when you've got done,
you felt like you just described, well, Sugar Bowl against Florida,
I mean that defense was ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
Cam Chancellor was on the defense of Virginia Tech. They
were physical, but yeah, they there were defenses that you'd
go against that Again, you left that game and you're like,
holy cow, that that was brutal. That was physical, and
it sticks with you a lot more than the easy ones.
Do you remember those defenses? And I just I agree
(43:19):
with you one hundred percent. I just don't think the
Bengals possess that.
Speaker 5 (43:23):
I don't either change the subject real quick not It's
not that I ever do that, Matia. I'm really anxious
to the mixed team out of LA and I play Arizona.
That should be a really good ball game, really good
ball game. I love to watch Nick coach on the sidelines.
He's got a cockiness about him that just I love it.
Speaker 3 (43:42):
You see, you see turn the ball over twenty four
times on Tuesday night and a win against Dayton. And
I asked Moeger on Wednesday, I said, how would Bob
Huggins and Mick Cronin have approached that post game if
they had turned the ball over twenty four times? You
wouldn't want to be a player on the team the
day after a game where you turn it over twenty
four times. Mick, he demands excellence on the defensive side
(44:06):
of the ball. That's where it starts and stops with him.
I appreciate him. I love watching him coach, and you're right,
it should be a fantastic one tonight. Mike's so good
to hear from you. Man. We appreciate you.
Speaker 5 (44:17):
Yeah, I appreciate you, guys. And that that rams Seahawks,
and that's the game of the weekend, right easily.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
Game easily. We're gonna pick that one an hour, number three.
Speaker 5 (44:27):
And I wonder if I wonder if McVeigh is going
to throw that three or four tight end thing at him.
He baffled from teams with that stuff.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
Thanks guys, yeah, Mike, thank you. All right, we're good,
got some phone calls. We're back to normal. Charlie Goldsmith.

Than you doing Tony, Charlie, I'm great man.
Speaker 9 (46:00):
How are you? I'm doing great?
Speaker 3 (46:03):
Let's start with the game on Sunday, Charlie. Coming out
of a bye and the defense we know has not
been good? How much better can the defense get coming
out of a bye with looking at tendencies, with doin
some self scouting? Are there things available for this defense
to improve with starting on Sunday?
Speaker 9 (46:23):
Not as much as say you'd have with the twenty
twenty one or the twenty twenty two Bengals. Those are
teams that I remember talking to Loui an Arrumo about this.
Harry heavily studied their scheme during the bye, came out
with brand new wrinkles, new coverage looks, new blitz packages,
and had things that I remember some of the best
football they played was out of the buy in twenty
(46:44):
twenty two with these unbelievable wrinkles that lou Anarrumo dove into. Well,
they're not elevating this scheme, they're simplifying this scheme. The
only you know, they could be running the best scheme
of the world. But what you're seeing right.
Speaker 15 (46:56):
Now is in one on one situations, fundamental technical mistakes,
guys not executing their assignments, and that's stuff that you
can't sit down in a meeting room in six because
of the level that they're at.
Speaker 9 (47:08):
These young guys just need to play, They need to develop,
they need to grow.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
You went into the weeds a little bit over the
bye week, and you came out of the weeds with
some interesting stuff on the Bengals defense and how they
approach third down defense, in particular, how they're guarding opposing
team's tight ends. We know tight ends have been an issue.
Pat Fryermuth did make some plays obviously in that first
go round, but talk a little bit about some variations
that maybe we can look for when it comes to
(47:34):
third down Against the Steelers.
Speaker 9 (47:37):
Tight ends have been a huge issue this year on
early downs, on first and second downs. Third downs not
as much, but still more than they have been in
the past. But I believe last year outside of the
Kansas City game, they didn't allow a catch to a
tight end on third down all season. Lou An Arumo
very comfortably had the Tray Flowers role, the tight end stopper.
Dejohn Anthony had it.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
He had it well.
Speaker 9 (48:01):
This year, they just keep their traditional dime defense on
the field. That's our golden plan. For third downs, they
just bring in Josh Newton, they spread out assignments, the
safeties get more involved, and there's not a general tight
end guy. It's one of the biggest just pure schematic
differences from last year to this year. And it's been
fine but not good enough, but still okay from a
(48:21):
tight end perspective. The one exception, though, is when they
played the Steelers, they brought back out dj Ivy to
be their tight end stopper because Pittsford's receiver's depth receiver
depth is that bad, and because they have some nice
tight ends Friar Johnny Smith. You know Washington lefto is
a pass catcher, but still him. They wanted more size
to face tight end, so they brought in dj Ivy
(48:43):
more on on their dime defense, kind of in the
Luenna Remo style, And I bet we'd see them do
something similar again on.
Speaker 3 (48:50):
Sunday, Charlie coming out of a buy. Just from a
personnel standpoint or a scheme standpoint, we know now they're
going to be without Shamar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson. Anything
they can do to give themselves a competitive advantage by
just the personnel they're going to try to use on
the field.
Speaker 9 (49:06):
I did while I was in the weeds, I did
a deep dive on Barrett Carter and I did find
the one thing that he's doing better than what Logan
Wilson did, and that's what he can do in pass
rush games on third downs. You know, you can have
them kind of be a guy who chases around a pick,
who kind of just kind of shoots out of a
cannon to try to get to the quarterback. Now, sometimes
(49:27):
they'll just miss the tackle, sometimes it'll come up empty.
But opportunities like that to take advantage of Carter's speed,
and now they did have some more time to work
on that during the bye week heading into this week. Remember,
Carter made his first start against the Packers and only
had a short week to get ready for the Steelers.
(49:47):
So one difference could be is what they do from
a Barrett Carter Blitz perspective, something they've actually had time
to work on and see how it looks now. But
even with that, the results are far from guaranteed.
Speaker 4 (49:59):
What about Cedric Johnson, know he's expected to play a
little bit more of a role with Trey and Schamar out,
what have the coaches kind of been saying about him,
and obviously had a good offseason and now that he's
back in the fray.
Speaker 9 (50:13):
Well, first, he's the type of guy you want to reward.
He's like on offense We've talked about like Joseavash and
to an even bigger extent, Chase Brown being one of
the best kind of do everything culture behind the scenes
about all of the right stuff like and Seid Johnson
really is one of those guys. He does one thing
(50:33):
very well, which is when he gets into a full sprint,
he can chase down the quarterback and he can kind
of find pressure opportunities with his speed now set not
as much by a cup of tea, because the pass
rush plan the games, the opportunity and ability on a
down to down basis being consistent at the line of
(50:53):
scrimmage against different types of tackles, winning with power, impacting
the game against the run, all those on his strength.
But he's got the ability to chase down a guy
and he plays pretty discipline, so you know, ideally that
gives him a bit of a spark compared to a
guy like you know, Shamar Stewart who hadn't really been
doing much of anything well as a pass rusher, Cam Sample,
(51:15):
who's been pretty stiff as a pass rusher. So Seed
Johnson does help because he does a couple of things
at a pretty decent level offensively.
Speaker 3 (51:23):
Charlie, what's the challenge now that presents this offense? Because
they've been so good and they've been so dynamic, go
back to the second half against Green Bay and how
they were against Pittsburgh and the Jets and the Bears.
Now you go into a buy what's the biggest challenge
this offense will face in trying to find that consistency
in that scoring on offense again on Sunday.
Speaker 9 (51:44):
I think the biggest thing is continuing to have that
baseline level up front in a way that lets Flaco
operate quickly and with confidence, being confident that when he
throws the ball in the game, then he'll be able
to do so clean. That's very important because and he
doesn't have that. That's where you see Flacco's well documented
historical you know, turnover issues both fumbled in interceptions become
(52:07):
a bigger part of the equation. So letting Flaco continue
to operate consistently with that, that's going to be the
name of the game for this Bengals offense for as
long as flackos their quarterback. Because there's really only one
style they can play. And we'll just some of what
they do against Pittsburgh based off some of their personnel.
You know, Joey Porter Junior is the corner they have
(52:28):
a lot of respect for, obviously a lot of fear
for TJ. Watt and for Cam Hayward. But there's still
one clean vision of how looks that we saw them
execute pretty perfectly the first time against Pittsburgh. They're going
to have to pretty much recreate.
Speaker 5 (52:41):
That on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
Defensively, for Pittsburgh, they played so much man the first
go around, and it's well documented the targets and the
catches that Jamar Chase was able to have. They just
didn't want to play zone defense. And I remember watching
Thursday Night Football and watching along and watching halftime, and
everyone's just shocked that pittsbe is not changing from man demand.
Now that they've had a chance to, I think regroup.
(53:05):
Jalen Ramsey's playing some more safety. Do you envision them
still trying to go man demand or do we see
more zone on Sunday against the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (53:14):
The biggest thing.
Speaker 9 (53:14):
I'm expecting, whether it's man or zone, is just for
them to show a lot of fear in both Jamar
and T. I just think as a whole, when you
look at the way they're going to try to deploy
their resources, it's a unit that's going to try to
take them away above all else. That's kind of how
all of the defenses have been playing a pretty much
the majority of these defenses have been playing the Bengals
(53:35):
this year. They haven't seen so much double double this year.
There have been so many cases where teams change everything
of what they do and what they're built on and
their philosophy and their foundation to play more double double
against Tomar and T because they're, you know, such a
unique receiving duo in the league. So I would look
at Pittsburgh continuing to kind of fall into that bucket
(53:56):
as opposed to maybe going down the general adjustment process
use if they were just facing the normal, typically built
offense this week.
Speaker 3 (54:03):
The rebuttal to that for the Bengals would be Andre Yosi,
Vash Tanner, Hudson, Noah, Mitchell Tinsley. Those four receivers combined
for ten catches in this team's last game against the
Chicago Bears. How important is the emergence? And you could
throw Chase Brown into that as well, who had eight catches.
How important is the emergence of those receivers if a
(54:24):
team is gonna come out and double double Tea and Jamar.
Speaker 9 (54:29):
So first, I mean, there are examples we can point
to this year, Like Jamar had a double move go
against the Lions. He had a bench route against the Bears.
I can't think of as many off the top of
my head with Tea, but but I guarantee you they
I feel like the slant for a touchdown against the Steelers,
Like the Bengals have routes and concepts that they feel
pretty confident in to still get them the ball when
(54:50):
those guys are doubled and we've seen that on tape.
We've seen that, you know, that was the whole Bengals
offense in the second half of the twenty twenty two
AFC Championship game, trying to find ways get them the ball,
and they've shown that they can still do that and
get big plays when teams try to take them away.
Speaker 8 (55:05):
But yes, I've held on.
Speaker 9 (55:07):
To and andre Yosivos stock along and what's been a
turbulent season for him. I trust him to win in
one on one opportunities. And Sam has just had a nice, solid,
healthy season and it's been exactly what the Bengals were
hoping for when they signed him. And you know, he's
throwing a dash here and there from Kinsley and Hudson overall,
you wish still were a little more speed they were
(55:29):
getting from their still guys behind the top two they
still desperately missed Jermaine Burton. I've been thinking about that
a lot. You beat double double with a guy with
great downfield speed who can turn in an explosive play
down the down the field out of the slot, like
they're missing that still. But on the whole, you like
where you're at.
Speaker 4 (55:49):
How shocked were you when you saw the news that
Joe Burrow was going to be returning to practice and
that his window was open, And what has kind of
been the reaction internally from what you've.
Speaker 9 (56:01):
It's something that if he continues on the track he's on,
becomes the second biggest story of his career, the biggest being,
of course, leading the Bengals to the Super Bowl in
year two and rewriting the narrative at the time about
how the Bengals were and how they felt and what
they represented around the league. Again, They've got to get
back there now. But it would be the craziest story
(56:23):
of Joe's career. You know, I'm just imagining what if
he did come back against Baltimore and play at a
high level and lead the Bengals to the win, to
a win. Now, I'm kind of saving that that admiration,
that adoration, all that reflection until Burrow actually does it.
I'm kind of keeping the the I'm keeping a little
bit of a distance right now because this is the
(56:46):
part where things get muddy, where you know, how does
Burrow react when he does this. Here's where he's really
testing himself, seeing what he can risk, seeing what he
can't risk so I can't be like two over the
moon impressed yet until I really see how what's on field.
But then once he's there, I mean, we've got all
the time in the world to say how unbelievable this
comeback Crossss has been.
Speaker 4 (57:06):
Do you think the Bengals would tell him no, if
they win the next two or if they lose the
next two weeks, maybe you give it.
Speaker 9 (57:13):
Another week in that in that scenario, but I also
think Burrow needs to play for the good of the
twenty twenty six Bengals like to basically go two full
years without playing football. To me, that's too much, that's
too long. You know, we've forgot We've gone so far
past the slow start storyline. If only that were the Bengals'
biggest problems still. But if you want to avoid a
(57:34):
slow start in twenty twenty six, you have to play
Burrow down the stretch in twenty twenty five or else
there's just too much.
Speaker 3 (57:39):
Russ Charlie, we would be were missed not to ask
you because you were at the Major League Baseball GM meetings,
any interesting Reds nuggets that you have to share from
what you learned The.
Speaker 9 (57:52):
Hunter Green trade rumors have been a non story all along,
Elie de la Cruz staying at shortstop. The Red's biggest
focus is, you know, kind of rebuilding, strengthening their bullpen
with a guy who probably has high leverage experience as
well as the left handers. Now, what I expect our
approach to be there is, let's see where the price
(58:13):
points and values go so you can get a deal
that would That would be a win for the Reds
from a value perspective, because they're not going to be
able to go out and splurge and get like the
top guy on their board and beed out another team
in a bidding wharf. There's one guy who in a
dream scenario they'd have circled with just fifteen to twenty
million dollars to spend. That's just not the market they're
(58:35):
going to be playing in fit to spend for the
whole roster, you know, adding to the roster. So from
that perspective, look at the bullpen. Can they add in
some depths or tube on the position players side, a
platoon piece who can hit lefties, That overall would be
their main course for the offseason.
Speaker 4 (58:54):
How long do you think there was a conversation about
Ellie potentially switching positions and do you know if there
is a particular plan with him to shore up his
defense at shortstop, if he's going to stay there.
Speaker 9 (59:09):
It was a realistic conversation out how long the conversation
went on behind closed doors, I can't keep you those specifics,
but you know I heard public Land privately, you know
it's cross sat at the end of the year, like
Ellie's their shortstop right now, and didn't give a definitive
answer on that. That backs up what I heard behind
the scene that obviously you have the definitive answer for now.
So sure there was some gray area that probably meant
(59:32):
there was a conversation, but ultimately what they what they
you know, came to the conclusion was Ellie they felt
that I think you both agree with this. His defense
was was pretty solid in the first half of the year,
especially for a twenty three year old, and then in
the second half it really fell off. Now, the story
of his second half, we all know if he was hurt,
(59:53):
he was playing too much. So there there, I their
their vision is if he gets some more strategic off days,
maybe a day here and then, and you keep them
fresh in twenty twenty six because you don't make the
same mistake of playing him every day like you did
in twenty twenty five, and you have Freddie benavide'z work
on him specifically with some stuff on the throws and
(01:00:14):
the arm angles and the footwork to make all that
think up on a play to play basis better. They
feel more than good enough about Elliot Short.
Speaker 4 (01:00:22):
At what point for this group does youth and inexperience
stop being a crutch for maybe some of their struggles.
Speaker 9 (01:00:33):
Well, the plan is to be young and stay young,
and that that's just who they are. That's where they're
at now, and you can win that way. The Brewers
were unbelievably. They just played a cleaner, smarter, more efficient
brand of baseball. So for me, my focus is on
looking the Red do behind the scenes to solidify, streamline
(01:00:54):
perfect their style of play and how they teach it
and how they execute it. That's where my focus is.
You know, they're not going to be in a spot
like I don't know, even like the Cubs, where they've
got veterans at most of those key spots on the field.
So this is just who the Reds are and where
they're at and they just got to be better or
else they're going to be a big disappointment. They're fighting
(01:01:16):
against that and they believe they're gonna figure it out.
Speaker 3 (01:01:19):
Charlie, I would be remiss not to ask you about
the showdown at Nippert Stadium tomorrow. Everyone's talking about BYU
and what that game could mean. This is a massive
one tomorrow for the Bearcats, coming off the buy and
the bad loss to Utah. How confident are you and
what the Bearcats can do to get back on track.
Speaker 9 (01:01:35):
Two big focuses. First, you know, we all know the
story of Brendan Swergby's season last year and how there
was positive momentum and then negative momentum.
Speaker 11 (01:01:44):
This is you know, coming.
Speaker 9 (01:01:45):
Off the game work sort you know, had a bad day.
Speaker 8 (01:01:49):
This is a chance for him.
Speaker 9 (01:01:50):
To re establish some of that upward trajectory. And if
you can take that then into such a massive game
the following week against the YU, now you're cooking or else.
If you can't re establish that momentum in the passing game,
you're on that, you know, soul searching kind of got
to figure things out mindset heading into the biggest game
of every year. So that's important to me? Would Storey also
(01:02:12):
interested to see Dote corleone? How is he looking? What's
his snap count like? What's the confidence like right now?
In the run defense? Can he be more of a
playmaker in it? Those are the two big things.
Speaker 3 (01:02:22):
For me tomorrow. Awesome, Charlie. We can't thank you enough
each and every Friday for joining us. The best to
follow along with everything that you have covered right now
is what.
Speaker 9 (01:02:32):
Just Charlie shockboard on substack got a story up on
DJ Turner and his season up right now.
Speaker 8 (01:02:38):
So thanks for.
Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
Having me, Charlie, thanks so much. A good weekend.
Speaker 9 (01:02:43):
See you guys have a good weekend all right.
Speaker 3 (01:02:44):
That's Charlie Goldsmith. That means your talkbacks Chucky Vegas are
now next after this break the Friday Football Frenzy on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 16 (01:02:55):
Now your chance to win a thousand dollars entered this
nationwide keyword on our website.
Speaker 17 (01:03:00):
Win.
Speaker 9 (01:03:01):
That's win.
Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
Answer it now, Hey, Alexa's.
Speaker 18 (01:03:05):
Talk bags, go and grab your phone and record a message.
Speaker 4 (01:03:09):
Just hit that microphone.
Speaker 3 (01:03:11):
Please keep it clean and don't be mean. And those
sprinkle sprinkle, drip, drip drip.
Speaker 4 (01:03:18):
It's that time. For talk back.
Speaker 9 (01:03:19):
Yeah, it's stuck favorite party since three sixty.
Speaker 19 (01:03:25):
So Austin, buddy, play those talkbacks on your screen and
please drive.
Speaker 4 (01:03:29):
Not to Sabat.
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
I think my favorite part of that is the drip drip.
Speaker 4 (01:03:34):
Yeah, And you know, I wonder how unless you maybe
you're listening on the app, if you can hear it,
just because it's really subtle. I mean I can hear
it in my headphones with like these really good headphones.
So it's just an incredible, exquisite detail. It is from
the former president. It is phenomenal. Tony Austin, all do
(01:03:56):
what it does.
Speaker 20 (01:03:58):
Hey, man, I talk for a long time, but I'm back. Okay,
we're gonna beat these stealers. Joe Flacco's gonna do the
job he was paid to do. Not that they're paying
him a whole lot, but they better sign him next year.
But anyway, Flacco gets her done to set up Joe
(01:04:19):
Burrow to beat Drake.
Speaker 21 (01:04:22):
Okay, thank you, thank you, Jeff, Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
This is your captain speaking. We are about to encounter
some rough air. I have turned on the fastened seatbelt sign.
There will be no beverage service. See you in hell.
Speaker 11 (01:04:41):
Awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
My god says he used to call you Tony pick
because of.
Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
Why he really just sets the scene for you. That
was just a lot going on there. Six seven six.
Speaker 22 (01:05:01):
Seven start bench cut brother, Buddy bub.
Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
Oh, I'm cutting Buddy. I'll bench bub, I'll start Brother,
I'll start Brother. I think good friend, brother.
Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
Yeah, he's my good friend.
Speaker 23 (01:05:20):
Hey guys, it's store in Atlanta or I've always been
very skeptical of Scott Saderfield, but I was slowly coming around.
That wasn't until last week when they got blowed out
by Utah. I always thought Scott Scotderfield was just dumb.
The fact that he's only thrown to Jeorge Warrior once
(01:05:40):
in each of the last two games is his proof
of that. I am not optimistic about the next three games.
Speaker 3 (01:05:47):
I can't control the whole who he's targeting and where,
but I do agree that they should probably target Joe Royer.
Speaker 16 (01:05:54):
Moore, Happy Pride, everybody, Wow, great May, It's so much
fun to watch Patrick Unifors did not care for it
looked like something just standards slap together stuff from a
video game with some fade of blue and a Patriots logo.
There's so much more you could have done there. I mean,
come on, do better, Bingals, Steelers hope it's not a
get right game for Rogers. Got to wait to keep
(01:06:14):
these slim playoff hopes alive. And hey, Tony, when you
returned back to the station, did you negotiate in the
Team Pike takeover?
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
I didn't. I didn't get the I don't know if
that's true. I didn't get the I think.
Speaker 4 (01:06:28):
He did on Fridays.
Speaker 24 (01:06:30):
I think you have Tommy G from FC Cincinnati on
So last night I was watching a Facebook reel where
the top half of the screen was to play on
the field and the bottom half was showing the announcers
booth with Tommy G during news goals. Man, Uh, they
were going crazy in that booth. Tommy G just absolutely
(01:06:54):
bleeds orange and blue.
Speaker 13 (01:06:56):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
Good for him, Tommy G. Love FC Cincinnati.
Speaker 25 (01:07:02):
It's the Lord. Hey Austin, Hey Tony, Hey Austin.
Speaker 1 (01:07:06):
Guess what.
Speaker 25 (01:07:06):
I'm going to my first Ohio State game this Sunday. Wow,
I can't wait. I think it'll be a lot of
fun and then want to come home On Sunday. I'm
going to watch the Bengals beat the Steelers forty nine
to twenty one.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
Okay, okay, So confirmation God is a Buckeye fan. Wow,
that's big game starts at what's seven thirty? Get down there,
I don't know, round seven, seven thirty in the morning,
Get after it.
Speaker 26 (01:07:37):
Hey, fellas, I'm sitting there watching the movie last night.
And no disrespect at all, Austin. But has anybody ever
told you you look an awful lot like the actor
Josh gad John Now, hey, say what you want, laugh
if you want. But he's thought he's a good actor,
(01:07:58):
all right, heiny's the worst. Put a little hair on
top of that head, man, I'm telling you, Josh Dad all.
Speaker 4 (01:08:06):
Right, I'm looking him up right now. The pictures of
him with a beard, Yes, I could see it without
a beard. My jaw is not that square. But I
you know, okay it there's that's a new one. I'd
never heard of him before. You think that's a term
of endearment, No, I don't think it is a term
of endearment, But I don't you know. He said no disrespect,
(01:08:29):
so I'll take his word for it.
Speaker 27 (01:08:30):
Greig Sharonville, Greig, my wish list for the weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:08:33):
Tell me you see win love it a Bengal win.
Speaker 27 (01:08:36):
Love it, Ohio State win and a Notre Dame loss,
because already this morning I heard if Notre Dame loses
to Pittsburgh, there's still a path with three losses for
them to the playoffs. That is absolutely laughable.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
Who gets in with two losses? Notre Dame or Texas?
Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
Uh? Probably Texas. Okay, I would.
Speaker 9 (01:09:03):
Assume, Tony, little Joe here, why don't you keep family's
name out the business of waste management?
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
If you know what I mean, They're always listening. This
is why I should never say anything.
Speaker 28 (01:09:17):
Hey, guys, Jeff and your Richmond have a great weekend.
My predictions Elder and Moler will advance this weekend in
high school football. Then we've got the Bearcats winning football
tomorrow thirty to twenty on, we've got the basketball team
winning big as well this weekend, and finally the Bengals.
(01:09:38):
They will win forty two to thirty eight. Joe Flacco
gets hurt late, Joe Burrow engineers the game winning drive.
Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (01:09:48):
Burrow's not gonna be active, Let's go all right?
Speaker 29 (01:09:51):
Hey there talking mafia, Tony, do you think truly reelected
aftab Puval is gonna to tell Patrick mahomes Daddy's back
once Burrow starts his first game.
Speaker 4 (01:10:07):
I still can't believe the tab.
Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
Said, oh no, defense nicknames the Matadors.
Speaker 16 (01:10:15):
Ohny's scoreboard, fatigue coverage trailer, Britt.
Speaker 7 (01:10:25):
Sieve, Oh my gosh, tackle me, Elmo, and Owl's golden shot.
Speaker 4 (01:10:33):
Yeah, you can figure out how that one look.
Speaker 30 (01:10:37):
East Side, reliable sources report that Aaron Rodgers was spot
in the corner of pucks a tiny and alleghany at
the Quickie Mark with a carton of American spirits and
a six pack of Hey Bud like to enjoy his
time in the pocket this Sunday versus the Bengals. I
I sure hope the Bengal is one of the Bardi
Trophy for your pops and the rest of us long
suffering Bengals fans out there. Let's wager a fresh as
(01:10:58):
ice cream fudge Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:10:59):
To the face.
Speaker 30 (01:11:00):
It doesn't happen under the watch of your beloved Zat
and Mike Brown.
Speaker 4 (01:11:04):
Have a great weekend. Well, fishes won't be around. No,
I don't even know if it is around anymore.
Speaker 31 (01:11:12):
That's gone, Hey, Jeff from the piers. One thing I
noticed seems to me that.
Speaker 19 (01:11:18):
The Bearcats in their secondary against Utah. They were there
on coverage much of the time, and a lot of
the passes from Utah were seemed to be short and
they were getting hitting a butt hitting the back.
Speaker 31 (01:11:35):
You know, the pass was behind him, Tony. Is it
that difficult for them to turn around? Yes, and look
at the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
It's my number one issue with their defense. Their corners
are in position so much to make plays and they
don't turn their head. I would if I played against UC,
I would throw eight deep balls at minimum in the
game just because of how poorly they have played the
ball in the air.
Speaker 4 (01:12:00):
It's awful.
Speaker 7 (01:12:01):
Mike in La, what up my.
Speaker 9 (01:12:05):
Real quick?
Speaker 7 (01:12:08):
If you dictate what I get to talk about, you
kiss my butt and.
Speaker 4 (01:12:12):
So that's the last time.
Speaker 5 (01:12:16):
That's good.
Speaker 4 (01:12:18):
It was a difference in opinion.
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
I enjoy talking to Mike.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
Do too that.
Speaker 4 (01:12:23):
I love you, man.
Speaker 2 (01:12:24):
Let me tell you what.
Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
If you're listening to Mike, I welcome your phocast.
Speaker 32 (01:12:28):
I do too.
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
I would love to hear from you.
Speaker 17 (01:12:31):
Mike.
Speaker 4 (01:12:33):
Beautifully done, man, beautifully done.
Speaker 16 (01:12:37):
Hey guys, Marc from the Groves.
Speaker 17 (01:12:40):
I would like to nominate the Columbus Cruise manager as
the clown of the year. After his remarks, so, I
guess this reds fands next year. We no longer have
to worry about wins and losses, particularly, just make sure
you outscore them in a series. According to him.
Speaker 19 (01:13:02):
Just wow.
Speaker 4 (01:13:03):
Yeah, not great for Wilfried Nancy. The gaffa for the
Columbus Crew he's you know, apparently he didn't know the rules,
which is it's a best of three, which means if
you lose two out of three, you're eliminated. But the
crew lost two out of three, so they were eliminated.
Although in the series they scored five goals and Cincinnati
(01:13:26):
scored three. It's just that all theirs came basically in
one fell swoop and a victory. Yeah, Wilfried Nancy not
a bright guy.
Speaker 3 (01:13:35):
One of the biggest things about being a manager or
a skipper or a coach is knowing the actual rules.
Speaker 4 (01:13:41):
Yeah, I mean they didn't tell him afterwards, he knew
he was eliminated.
Speaker 33 (01:13:45):
Happy Friday, gentlemen. I knowles get changed, but how very
disappointing to have no Tommy g today, especially big molessed.
Change is just announced saying have a great weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:14:02):
Yep, yep, Well we'll good Tommy back. Maybe have been
for an hour next week, Yeah, maybe we let him know.
Speaker 34 (01:14:07):
Tony Beastick hits the mail man on this Friday football frenzy.
Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
I don't got any words for the Bengals. Hope they win,
but who knows. But I do have a couple of good.
Speaker 17 (01:14:18):
Words for the Soul Lancers and my son going up
against Anderson.
Speaker 4 (01:14:23):
Hopefully it's a nice one. It's gonna be tough. Twenty
one seventeen Lancers. Let's go and take the victory. You
guys have other best day ever.
Speaker 3 (01:14:34):
You hold that Anderson team under twenty. You're doing the
Lord's work. Carmeline, it's a loane. That's a good squad
shooting too. It's a good squad.
Speaker 22 (01:14:42):
Hey, guys, Hank Hill, here what I heard my name
mentioned the other day on your shoe?
Speaker 4 (01:14:48):
Uh?
Speaker 22 (01:14:49):
I got an idea for you. How about Donald Trump
as your defensive coordinator? I mean, look at how reading ahead.
Speaker 4 (01:14:57):
We don't need That's not Hank.
Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
Tank would know. We don't really talk politics on this show.
Speaker 4 (01:15:03):
Yeah, we don't need to do that. Do appreciate you
leaving a talk back, But I immediately thought of I immediately
thought of Buddy the elf when he says, you don't
smell like Santa, you smell like beef and cheese. That's
who that was, Bargain Ben Hank Hill right there.
Speaker 35 (01:15:22):
Wow, Austin and Toni's Boomerdre from South Bend.
Speaker 4 (01:15:25):
Bo Yeah.
Speaker 35 (01:15:26):
So what's the history with Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight
on tackling?
Speaker 19 (01:15:29):
Man?
Speaker 35 (01:15:30):
I mean, you can't make it to the NFL if
you haven't been a decent tackler, especially at linebacker. Pretty
anxious to see action, I mean, why the hell not
so Friday? Bad joke. Oh buddy of mine had to
go with the doctor. Thought he was invisible, but the
doctor couldn't see him. Have a great weekend, guys, Thank you.
Speaker 34 (01:15:54):
Hey guys, Brenda Wilsers to drop the line and you're
talking about what and some tough meat people on beefense.
So I don't think that's gonna happen. We got mister
Rogers as a head coach. I mean, Zach Taylor strikes
me as being probably one of the nicest people you'd
ever want to run into. But that's not what we
want on our team.
Speaker 9 (01:16:11):
I don't know, guys, you.
Speaker 4 (01:16:12):
Have a good one. Go Anderson a lot and anders n.
Speaker 12 (01:16:21):
Well, Joe Burrow is back, Mike in La is back.
Speaker 4 (01:16:27):
That can mean only one thing.
Speaker 28 (01:16:29):
Kyle Schwarber is coming back to a baby.
Speaker 4 (01:16:32):
Oh friends, being Slowey figured out earlier this morning, the
Reds are gonna sign Carl Schwarber and try to tell
everybody it's.
Speaker 3 (01:16:39):
Kyle rep in the city out here in sunny hot Zona.
Speaker 4 (01:16:42):
What up, Tony man? You see? Don't let me down.
I'm out here talking that talk and I'm barking that
beat zone. Were about to smack Zona.
Speaker 32 (01:16:51):
I was flexing out here always, And Yo, why am
I arguing with a Cowboys fan about who defense is
the worst? He says, defense is trash. I said, massive garbage.
He said his defense ain't stop nobody. I said, my
beefs can't stop. But sentence with a period, real talk
not can you get any worse than that? He got quiet.
I thought, so let's go being was we winning this game?
(01:17:11):
Can't stop a sentence with a period?
Speaker 4 (01:17:14):
No love it? That's so good.
Speaker 36 (01:17:18):
Hey, guys, I got a serious question because I don't
know the answer. But I've always wondered about this. But
and this has nothing to do with you, but guys
that have pressed passes like things are Peen and Joe
Daniman and guys like that. Do they have to be
aware of how critical they can be of the franchise
with fear of losing their press pass And if so,
(01:17:39):
how come other cities like don't have to deal with that,
like Philly, New York, Green Bay, Pittsburgh. I see their
media being very critical.
Speaker 4 (01:17:48):
I can't speak for them. I don't really know. To
be honest, I'm not in there. I wouldn't imagine that
that happens all that often. I'm sure they've you know,
said or done things the Bengals haven't liked, But I
don't know that they've come out and said, hey, knock
it off or else you can't cover us. Yeah.
Speaker 36 (01:18:07):
And one other thing on college football, Ohio State is plus.
Speaker 4 (01:18:11):
One to win the whole thing, and they.
Speaker 36 (01:18:15):
Are minus one fifteen to make the national championship. I mean,
as a gambler, you can just tell how much better
they are than the rest of the country. It is insane.
I watch all these teams in these colleges every week.
Seen struggle with somebody in High State, struggles with nobody.
(01:18:35):
They're going to run through it.
Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
Yeah, I don't know what the I don't know what
the pushback is with Ohio State this year. I really don't.
Speaker 4 (01:18:43):
Yeah, yeah, Tony and naughty. This is a little Joe,
Little Joe from Jersey.
Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Yeah yeah, hey, Tony, what you're doing talking about mafia business.
Speaker 4 (01:18:51):
Here on the airwaves since it's natty huh?
Speaker 3 (01:18:54):
It's going off the man house.
Speaker 4 (01:18:55):
Yeah, me and my boys appreciate it.
Speaker 11 (01:18:57):
If you wouldn't do that, perhaps we'll we'll circle the
next date for your Tony More football show there and
make a visit.
Speaker 3 (01:19:05):
Yeah, you got that.
Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
I might have to make a call this weekend, hire
some guys to show up in suits.
Speaker 3 (01:19:13):
It wasn't me. That was not me. You have the
rizzler coming after you would never say anything negative.
Speaker 16 (01:19:18):
I was just.
Speaker 8 (01:19:19):
Wondering when we're going to get the updated song for.
Speaker 25 (01:19:21):
Talk It's that time for talk bags. It's our favorite
part of Tony Pikes and.
Speaker 4 (01:19:29):
Good point. That's a good point. That's the name of
the show.
Speaker 22 (01:19:34):
Austin, Tony Sean and I got a theme in my head.
Speaker 13 (01:19:39):
I wish I was in.
Speaker 17 (01:19:40):
The locker room because it would go like, all right, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
Yep, Austin's doing the lord's work right now, reading ahead.
I'm guessing for a little context, Josh gadd is pull
off Frozen, So take that.
Speaker 4 (01:19:56):
You will well, I mean a cartoon, Yeah, and the
car too, that's fine. I mean Olaff's a legend.
Speaker 3 (01:20:06):
Tony, did I put a spring in your step when
you found out that Brian Kelly was fired from LSU?
Just curious?
Speaker 4 (01:20:15):
I will say this. I know you have a chance
to answer this. You never seemed to take a really
strong opinion on Brian Kelly because I think you're conflicted,
because you know he's just an irre like, just a
reprehensible human being. But also he was a guy who
you like.
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
He gave me a chance and his offense fit exactly
what I did best, and I appreciate that. Just a
just not a good person. I think there's a fine
line there.
Speaker 4 (01:20:48):
I heard too much.
Speaker 27 (01:20:50):
Boys go cards.
Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
And as I don't know what that is. That hurts
my ears.
Speaker 4 (01:20:57):
Yeah, that's uh, Michael trying to leave a talk about
and Michael's left plenty in the past. It is Mike
might be messed.
Speaker 3 (01:21:03):
I hurt my ears.
Speaker 28 (01:21:09):
I don't really consider soccer to be a sport.
Speaker 7 (01:21:15):
Any any game that toddlers can play is not a sport.
Speaker 9 (01:21:24):
I hate watching it.
Speaker 4 (01:21:26):
Somebody has a shot.
Speaker 8 (01:21:27):
On goal and goes twenty.
Speaker 9 (01:21:28):
Feet over the goal and then I says like I
want to strive. I can't stand it back.
Speaker 4 (01:21:35):
Okay, so don't watch it, Brah.
Speaker 12 (01:21:38):
You have seen that Mike Dwine put out his endorsement
for Kyles forbar to the Reds.
Speaker 4 (01:21:43):
Yes, so it's what me and Slowly we're talking about today.
Can Mike the Wine dip into the Rainy Day Fund
and give the Reds a little bit of a loan
here to make this happen for his good friend Bob Caste. Lady,
what about all that gambling taxes that the state is getting?
Speaker 13 (01:22:00):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (01:22:01):
Can we can we create a fund to help our
small market major league teams compete with the rest of
Major League Baseball? Now, this is legislation I can sign
up for. Now, whoever one of these candidates, who's Who's
Who's running? Amy Acton and Vivek whichever one of those
two can come up with a plan to create a
(01:22:23):
fund to help Cleveland and Cincinnatis quote unquote small market
baseball teams be able to compete in Major League Baseball.
They'll have my vote.
Speaker 22 (01:22:34):
Hey, I'm tired of hearing negative bathroom guy every day,
double dip in negativity.
Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
Dude, just stop negative bathroom guy guy. Uh yeah, listen,
everybody has a voice here, you of course say terrible,
terrible things. So yeah, that was it. That was our
last one.
Speaker 3 (01:22:54):
We've got some Jamar Chase audio that we will share
from him speaking yesterday when we return the Friday Football
Frenzy on ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 6 (01:23:05):
In the NATI on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home
of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (01:23:13):
All right, welcome back Friday Football Frenzy. A little football
in the NATTI. To wrap up our number two here.
Before we get to our number three, we've got our
weekly pick them that we will make up as well. Again,
we are done at two thirty because Kentucky Basketball plays
later on this afternoon and their pregame show has moved
up everything along the schedule this afternoon, so we're out
(01:23:35):
at two thirty this afternoon. Jamar Chase, the leader since
Joe Burrow has been out, the leader of the Cincinnati Bengals,
I believe, has been Jamar Chase. You heard what he
had to say after the Bears loss. Jamar coming off
of bye looking ahead to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Here's what Jamar Chase had to say yesterday that you
(01:23:56):
reflected over the buyer week.
Speaker 30 (01:23:57):
What's the biggest thing that jumped out to you as
you kind of approached the second half of the season.
Speaker 18 (01:24:04):
I mean, nothing really jump out to me for if
I'm being honest, really just getting a moment, having to
free of mind and get my body right for a minute.
Speaker 3 (01:24:14):
What's it like having Burrow back out there? I know
he's not in eleven on eleven's, but just to have
him out there during practice.
Speaker 18 (01:24:22):
Feels good having him out there hour. I like messing
with him now he's back. I can usually do that
when he was injured, but just having him out there
is just good having It's just best for everybody, you
know what I'm saying. The energy feels good for the
whole offense just making sure he's back.
Speaker 21 (01:24:39):
You know.
Speaker 18 (01:24:39):
So he definitely puts smiles on people's faces.
Speaker 3 (01:24:42):
What involved is he? How involved is he during these practices?
He does like.
Speaker 18 (01:24:51):
He does like I think Indy. I don't really know
like what else he does besides Indy, but he don't
do like no team drills or nothing like that. So
majority till him just like you know, doing his own
stuff on the side and then coming to practice.
Speaker 4 (01:25:04):
I didn't mess with.
Speaker 18 (01:25:05):
Head button, punch him whatever I can. I treated him like,
look like my little burder. I'm like, I like bullying
him a little.
Speaker 3 (01:25:17):
Bit because he I mean, he's not one to take
a lot of that.
Speaker 28 (01:25:20):
I mean does he ever.
Speaker 4 (01:25:21):
Get you back?
Speaker 35 (01:25:23):
Uh?
Speaker 18 (01:25:23):
Once I start throwing punches, that's when he's interested into fighting.
Speaker 3 (01:25:26):
Yeah, like he like the UFC. Yeah, what do you
think that is?
Speaker 9 (01:25:32):
What do you what do you think?
Speaker 28 (01:25:33):
It takes a couple of punches for him to land,
for him to then.
Speaker 18 (01:25:35):
Like, I just think he liked the motion of punching
and kicking. He's such a UFC fighter. So did he
did you did?
Speaker 4 (01:25:45):
Did you know he was getting close or were you
surprised at some point?
Speaker 18 (01:25:48):
And when he practiced him, I didn't know he was practicing.
I was surprised. I just seen him putting the stuff on.
Speaker 4 (01:25:54):
I didn't know what was going on. When did that start?
What did you start messing with him? Did you do that?
Speaker 19 (01:25:58):
Alic you?
Speaker 4 (01:26:00):
Hell no?
Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
Why he didn't?
Speaker 18 (01:26:02):
He didn't talk to nobody And I ain't really know
him media, I'm not gonna push somebody buttons if I
don't know him yet. You know, I just mess with
him over here and there. But like now he's it's
like you know, I see him. We don't talk. We
don't talk in the morning sometimes because it'd be so
early for me. Then once the last time told, we
start talking.
Speaker 5 (01:26:18):
A little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:26:19):
It's I can really tell you got here? Did you
start being the type to mess with yo a little more?
Speaker 18 (01:26:25):
I want to say, just his last year at LSU,
Uh felt like we had a lot of just a
bond practice only.
Speaker 4 (01:26:34):
So he pushes buttons get him going during games.
Speaker 18 (01:26:41):
Maybe if we score that drop, I might say some
slick shit, oh slick, some slick words to him. Sorry,
what's you know?
Speaker 28 (01:26:49):
Obviously a big game against Steelers coming up.
Speaker 29 (01:26:51):
What would what would it mean to be able to
sweep them and kind of get some momentum back after
of how the seasons went, especially these last couple of weeks.
Speaker 18 (01:26:59):
Uh, Yeah, thing is I think it would be good
just to get our momentum back after those past two
games we lost, just knowing the feeling of how it
feels to lose and win, knowing after some games we're
supposed to win, so you know, just having that feeling
of losing, I think we don't want to fill out again.
So you know, we got to have the mindset to
(01:27:20):
win this game because that's what we want to be
for AFC.
Speaker 37 (01:27:23):
Does that help having Flacco on your team, knowing that
he's this would be the third time that he's played
them this season? Does that help at all for you guys?
Speaker 18 (01:27:33):
Or yes, but that's more of a quarterback question. I'm
not in the quarterback or I don't know what they're
talking about.
Speaker 37 (01:27:40):
Well does he talk with you guys, like if he
know not something? Now you're just not a talkative guy.
Speaker 18 (01:27:47):
I mean, good job pretty much what we get usually.
Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:27:57):
With Ramsey go in safety.
Speaker 37 (01:28:00):
What is what does that mean for them?
Speaker 35 (01:28:01):
What is it?
Speaker 19 (01:28:01):
How does that change?
Speaker 3 (01:28:03):
What's it mean?
Speaker 18 (01:28:05):
I mean it just really show he just really showing
how versatile he is as a as a person, as
a as a dB.
Speaker 4 (01:28:11):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 18 (01:28:12):
And I think they had like I think he only
moved a city because it was a change on the
back end. So I'm not really sure one hundred percent
of what's going on how they're doing that but you
know he just shown off versutileiaated.
Speaker 4 (01:28:25):
All right, that's a lot. I mean, it's just best.
We just gotta finish it off with that there.
Speaker 3 (01:28:34):
Move away. I never in a way I've.
Speaker 4 (01:28:42):
Viewed it's my fault that that's all my fault.
Speaker 3 (01:28:44):
In a way I viewed Jamar Chase in a similar
way I viewed Mowagger, whereas I like never know how
to take him. Like surely Joe Flacco is talking to
them during the week, like that's a lot, Like he's
throwing punches with with Joe Burrow. It's just I.
Speaker 4 (01:29:00):
Literally, oh, he's I feel like he's like, you know,
kind of jabbing him a little bit, but he's not
punching him.
Speaker 3 (01:29:05):
Yeah, every time, I'm sure talks coverages every time we
play anything from him. Like, I don't know how to
take him. He loves to mess with the media. He's
so good at it. It's it's it's fun to watch.
We've got to go hour three. That's right, it's next.
It'll start with pick him on the h in fifteen
(01:29:26):
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 6 (01:29:29):
You've been listening to Football in the NATI on ESPN
fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 14 (01:29:41):
S k Y Cincinnati, make us the number one pre
sent on your car radio and on the Free Knew
It Improved iHeartRadio add free never sounded so good.
Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:29:51):
From the schmid Heating Temp Star Weather Center.
Speaker 3 (01:29:53):
Here's your forecast.
Speaker 6 (01:29:54):
This report is sponsored by A Leave Life doesn't wait,
and neither should you?
Speaker 9 (01:30:00):
And leave can you.
Speaker 3 (01:30:03):
Wait? What's happening? This is the start of Hour number three.
Where's Tommy G? Where's tom Gallader?
Speaker 4 (01:30:09):
Tony Tony Tony? Hell us real?
Speaker 3 (01:30:11):
What happened?
Speaker 4 (01:30:15):
They ate it an off week to plan out the
schedule for the next three years.
Speaker 3 (01:30:18):
Schedule release for Tommy G. He's unavailable today. Load management,
load management. He's got a little time. I bet he
pulled something with those fist pumps. Yep, something happened. Yeah,
something happened. But don't worry. We talked to Tommy next
week ahead of FC Cincinnati's next match against Enter Miami.
And as we've said, since we're done at two thirty today,
(01:30:41):
we've got to move up pick him anyway, So let's
make some picks. High school College NFL Hour number three
thanks to Penn Station on ESPN fifteen thirty, the Friday
Football Frenzy. Here we go Austin Princeton at Elder. Princeton
was left for dead last week.
Speaker 4 (01:30:58):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (01:30:59):
They come back in the fourth quarter to beat Winton Woods.
Now they go to the pit. Now they take on
the Panthers. Altiora Elder Elder Elder Purple Friday.
Speaker 4 (01:31:07):
What do you think I mean? This is a no brainer.
I'm not gonna pick Princeton over my Elder Panthers. After
I had turned my back on Elder earlier this year,
I learned my lesson. I'm never picking against Ron Runk
and the Panthers ever again.
Speaker 3 (01:31:20):
Doug Ramsey eased into the playoffs last week after a
bye the week before. This team's fresh, this team's ready
to go. Elder beats Princeton, got the pit.
Speaker 13 (01:31:30):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:31:31):
Baden Austin Baden ended the season of alter last week. Yeah, tonight,
they turned their eyes to the Tips City, Tip of Canoes.
They look to end the Red Devils. They look to
end Tip City season. Just the Tip City, just the
Tip City. I got news for you, though it ain't happening.
Baden falls, Tip City wins and remains undefeated this year.
Speaker 4 (01:31:54):
I don't know if you saw the score of the
Tip game last week. I forget who they played. I
feel like it was a team from down here, somewhere
relatively close. Sure either way, Tip had a running clock
in a second hand.
Speaker 3 (01:32:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:32:07):
Tip's a machine, of course, hailing from the Miami Valley League,
where Sydney is HOMEDU Tip Tip Tip to Tip Tip.
That was well, Oh that was Taliwanda fifty five. Yeah
Talawanda your boy?
Speaker 3 (01:32:24):
Yeah, goodie Wes Carrollton the week before, seventy seven to six,
Talawanda fifty five to seven. Good luck Baden, good luck
Tip City. They rolling this one. How about Taft at
Indian Hill? Okay, Indian Hill, Boy, that's a juxtaposition. How
about that a little bit? You like Taft?
Speaker 4 (01:32:43):
Yeah I do. I just told Indian Hill is going
to be an underdog in this game. I don't know
anything about either school, but I said, okay, I'll go
with the favorite. I'll take Taft.
Speaker 3 (01:32:51):
Yeah, we're in the same boat here, I think Taft.
I don't. I don't root for Indian Hill because it's
a chl rival of the Redding Blue Devils. Oh okay,
how about London and Jackson I talked about London last week.
Almost so many unbelievable figures in the world of sports,
and I left one out. Austin, Okay, the birthplace of
(01:33:11):
one Dick Lebou is London. The Red Raiders. Oh boy,
the Red Raiders of London. They were called for seventeen
penalties last week. Oh they hadn't been scored on since
Week four that ended last week? Does Jackson end the
season of London. I'm gonna go with London in this one. Okay,
(01:33:36):
for Dick Lebou. This is the first time we've differed.
I just picked a team here. Now we know the
official for this game tonight. I wonder if he'll be
calling seventeen penalties on them again. Wow, I'm gonna go
with Jackson. You're going to Jackson? Yes, Okay, I'm going
to Jackson. There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
I also have a nephew named Jackson.
Speaker 3 (01:33:57):
How about this one?
Speaker 4 (01:33:58):
Got after him? Old JK.
Speaker 3 (01:34:00):
It's sex It's molar one of the best high school
games in the nation tonight. And because it's such a
big game, where's it gonna be played? Dayton Welcome Stadium?
What an absolute miss. It's embarrassing. You got to go
to Dayton to watch this and at that dump note
as welcome stadium, Austin. I'll give you the first swing.
Speaker 4 (01:34:21):
Why can't they play this at pay Court Stadium? Great question,
he'd probably fill it up. Great question, ste X Molar?
Who you got Molar?
Speaker 5 (01:34:30):
Wow?
Speaker 4 (01:34:30):
Heear those doors? Walk them in of Molar. This one's
not close. Let's go big mo.
Speaker 3 (01:34:36):
I think it is close. I think it's closer than
people expect. In fact, I think it's an upset in
honor of Ohio state tight end Max Claire. This week,
I'm gonna go with the Saint X Bombers. Daniel Vallmer
killing it right now for sat X. Ponatowski. He's been awesome,
(01:35:00):
awesome at Molar. He's got a bright future at Kentucky.
But I think it ends tonight. Give me Seynex and
the Bombers in Dayton to beat Moler. Let's go to
the college slate. All right, Okay, let's go to the
college slate Wisconsin. No word yet on if Luke Fickle
is traveling with his vest or not. Since we don't
(01:35:21):
know that, all we have to go on is they're
going to Indiana, who's number two in the country and
they're gonna give twenty eight and a half to the
Wisconsin Badgers. Badgers, Now, Indiana down to the wire last week.
Is there a flaw? Is there a chink in the
armor of the Hoosiers? Or is that a game against
Penn State that gets them locked back in and they
roll on Saturday? What say you?
Speaker 16 (01:35:42):
Now?
Speaker 4 (01:35:43):
We picked these with the spread? Yes, twenty eight and
a half, twenty eight and a half American points. You're
in favor of the Hoosiers. These are American points. Indiana
rolls comfortably. I got them to cover.
Speaker 3 (01:35:54):
Yeah, I think it's the Hoosiers. Look, Wisconsin left at
all in the field last week? They stormed the field. Yes,
in Madison, they stormed the field after a win over
the twenty third ranked what's cut Washington Huskies. They're done,
they got what they needed. They're moving on. Indiana rolls.
How about this Notre Dame number nine at number twenty
two Pittsburgh Now Pat Nardozy said he's okay losing this
(01:36:16):
game by one hundred, He said, as long as they
win the next at two ACC games. That being said,
if he's willing to lose by one hundred, is he
willing to lose by more than twelve and a half.
Oh give me the Irish, Yeah, gimme Marcus Freeman and
the Irish to roll into Pittsburgh. They are going to
(01:36:36):
muck up that field. And I don't know if that
hurts or helps the Bengals for Sunday. But you know
what Notre Dame's about. It's about that running game. They're
gonna run all over the Panthers of Pittsburgh. Sorry, Pat Nardoozy,
I love the guy. I love Pat Nardoozy, even though
he used to make me run steps for throwing completions
on Thursdays for scout team. That being said for third day, yep,
(01:37:00):
I was on scout team, and if you threw completions
on Thursday's practice when you were supposed to be building
up the defense, you had to run up the stadium
stairs and back down. I'd complete a ball and I'd
just take off running. Oh my god, next quarterback in line,
I'd slap hands with him as he was running up
the stairs and I was coming back down.
Speaker 4 (01:37:18):
He said a lot about his defense.
Speaker 3 (01:37:19):
That's right now. Knowing that, who do you like?
Speaker 4 (01:37:22):
I still got a Notre Dame.
Speaker 3 (01:37:26):
The Iris number eleven Oklahoma Number four Alabama. Alabama's gonna
lay five and a half at home. What do you like?
Speaker 4 (01:37:33):
I like Kaylin de Bor and Bama to keep it rolling.
Speaker 3 (01:37:36):
Blitz Bama, blitz.
Speaker 4 (01:37:38):
Don't give up about nothing but blitz Bama. Blitz.
Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
I like the Sooners in this one.
Speaker 4 (01:37:44):
Oh my gosh, Boomer Sooner, what's wrong with you?
Speaker 3 (01:37:48):
Blitz Bama?
Speaker 4 (01:37:49):
Blitz.
Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
Alabama's right for the picking right now. I'll take Oklahoma.
How about number ten Texas. This might be the worst
tenth ranked team I've ever see in college football. I
don't get it, but they keep giving Texas love. They're
gonna creep back into this somehow, someway. They're at Georgia.
Kirby Smart's bunch minus six and a half. What do
(01:38:12):
you think.
Speaker 4 (01:38:15):
Georgia Blitz Bama blitz what.
Speaker 3 (01:38:17):
I don't know? You got Georgia in this one?
Speaker 4 (01:38:19):
I do, yeah, yeah, I think everybody's kind of rolling
at the right time. I don't believe in Texas. I
don't believe in Arch. This game is in Athens. I'll
take Georgia.
Speaker 3 (01:38:27):
Is it still Arch Manning? Is he still the quarterback?
Speaker 4 (01:38:31):
I don't know. To be honest, I do like.
Speaker 3 (01:38:33):
The Texas defense. I really do, and I think they
got some athletes and playmakers on that field. But I'm
with you. This just feels like a game where Georgia says, hey,
hold up, wait a minute, y'all thought we were finished.
Yeah they're not. They're just flying under the radar right now.
Or the Georgia Bulldogs. I don't get it. We're just
(01:38:54):
ignoring Georgian and Kirby Smart not after this weekend, Georgia
beats Texas big, speaking big, it's a big number in Columbus.
It's a night game. Yeah, it's a night game, and
here come the Bruins of UCLA. Yeah, Ucla is not
gonna win this game. But many are wondering, can you
(01:39:15):
CELA cover thirty one and a half points on the road?
What do you think?
Speaker 4 (01:39:21):
This does? Feel like a lot of points at Ohio
State has won some games comfortably, They've never really like
run away with it unless it was a school that
really just didn't belong on the field with them. Certainly
haven't totally run away with it in conference games. Yea, yea, Yeah.
UCLA's offenses look good ever since the firing of Thomas
whatever that guy's name was, and then the new Heiseel
guys fun turn their offense.
Speaker 3 (01:39:44):
The quarterback Nico that left Tennessee, he's a.
Speaker 4 (01:39:46):
Go Eamaliava PTSD for him. You might remember the playoff
game last year at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes broke his helmet.
They hit him so hard. I'm gonna say, he's scared,
he's shaken. He know he ain't gonna make it. What
whoa Nico Imliava tu interceptions Ohio State takes them both
(01:40:06):
back to the house. Oh yeah, I'm telling you what.
This is a blowout here. Give it a Buckeyes.
Speaker 3 (01:40:11):
You're saying, Nico shaken, not stirred Saturday night? How about this?
Austin Joe Burrow in twenty nineteen completed seventy six point
three percent of his passes at LSU.
Speaker 4 (01:40:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:40:20):
Two thousand and eight, Colt McCoy seventy six point seven.
Speaker 4 (01:40:23):
He was pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:40:23):
Twenty twenty Mac Jones seventy seven point four of Baman.
Then twenty twenty three Bo Knicks at Oregon completed seventy
seven point four of his passes through nine games. I'm
just saying, Julian saying is completing eighty point nine percent
of his passes. That is the highest single season completion
percentage to date in the FBS history.
Speaker 4 (01:40:43):
What's his yards per attempt? Oh, because it's not like
he's dinking and Dunky. He ain't Dnking and Duncan is
eighty percent and he's going down the field.
Speaker 3 (01:40:50):
He ain't Dnking and Duncan. His average nine point nine.
So that's a first down per completion. I'm just saying,
Julian over Nick oh Buck, guys cover comfortably. I got
this at like forty two to three, something like that
night game in Columbus. All right, Austin, I've talked about this,
(01:41:12):
We've talked about this, most talked about this. This is
a scary game for the Bearcats of Cincinnata. Six and
a half is the number. Arizona a few points and
plays away from one loss. I like the Bearcats. I
like Brendan Soresby, I like Corleone. I like this team.
(01:41:33):
Out of a bye to write the ship and set
up next week maybe maybe College game Day. Maybe if
they win and BYU wins, set up an opportunity to
talk about one of the biggest games coming to Nippert
Stadium in quite some time. They have to take care
of business tomorrow. I think they do. They beat Arizona
and they cover.
Speaker 4 (01:41:52):
I got some breaking news for you here, bum, All right,
all right, I think I'm gonna be at this game
coming to this game tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:42:01):
You got Man Jeen seats?
Speaker 4 (01:42:02):
No, I didn't get any Man Jean seats, but I
think I'm I think I'm gonna be at the nip Go.
Haven't been to the nip for a game since, oh boy,
twenty seventeen. I think it's been a while. The Bearcats
won that day when I was there. It was the
battle for the victory bell, oh boy. And I think
your present six and a half I don't feel crazy
(01:42:23):
about because I feel like it's a close game. But
maybe a late runaway touchdown to the Bearcats while they're
trying to bleed the clock and they'll cover the six
and a half. Give me give me Cincinnati since he
with an eye, or since he with a y, Well,
Cincinnati at the end with an eye, since he shortened
with a Why there.
Speaker 3 (01:42:43):
You go, all right through the NFL. We go Bucks
at Bill's the number six and a half? Nah, baby, nah,
that's too many points for Baker Mayfield. I think Bills win.
I think Bucks cover. I agree, Packers at Giants. The
only reason I threw this on there is because Jameis
Winston is starting to quarterback in Jamis. We trust is
Jamis getting six and a half cover against the Packers.
Speaker 4 (01:43:05):
No, he doesn't. Packers are a Boa constrictor against Jamis,
and green Bay covers comfortably.
Speaker 3 (01:43:10):
Packers are a good team until they play a bad team.
They have losses to the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns.
Jamis Winston does the Lord's work on Sunday and they
cover Chargers Jags. Chargers, Jags are the Jaguarars fraudulent. I
think so, Yeah, I think so. I think the Chargers
get a big win, and I think the Jags fall
(01:43:31):
out of the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:43:32):
I'm right there with you. I was big on the Jags.
They've let me down.
Speaker 3 (01:43:35):
Potential potential game of the weekend. Seahawks at Rams, Rams
minus three and a half at home. Listen, if Stafford's
gonna be my MVP, then surely he's gonna beat the
Rams at home. I'm sure he's gonna beat the Seahawks
at home. I don't think this one's close. I think
this is a huge statement for the Rams on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:43:55):
I do think that this is close, but maybe not
quite three and a half. I got the Rams winning
this one just because I'm not gonna bet against Los
Angeles at home now, and that's a big home. I
know it's not really a home field advantage, but I
don't know that there's a flock of Seahawks fans coming
down for that game like you might typically see flock.
Speaker 3 (01:44:16):
I got the Rams, what you got with the Ravens
and the Browns and AFC North slugfest a battle in Cleveland,
the number seven and a half? What say you?
Speaker 4 (01:44:25):
Lamar Jackson back to practice, He'll do whatever he wants
on Cleveland Baltimore covers.
Speaker 3 (01:44:29):
I'm going opposite. I'm going this Browns defense and the
raven I know the Ravens defense has been better. I
think this is a late back door swing open for
the Browns. I'll take the Browns to lose, but cover
the number. Chiefs at Broncos. I'm calling Broncos fraudulent alert.
Sound the alarm, Broncos. Fraudulent Chiefs win.
Speaker 4 (01:44:52):
Chiefs cover on the road, Broncos make a statement at home,
they cover the three and a half, they beat the
Kansas City Chiefs continue to try to carve out a
path for the Bengals to get to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:45:03):
What a great slate this is on Sunday? How about
Lions Eagles? AJ Brown's not happy. Jalen Hurts doesn't care.
He's worried about the Lions, and he should be. It's
a juggernaut, it's a train. It feels like Philly's been
trending downward. I think this is the game it catches
up to him. I like the Lions on the road, Austin.
Speaker 4 (01:45:22):
I'm right there with you. This is a Sunday night
football game, the Lions and the Eagles. I trust in
Dan Campbell.
Speaker 3 (01:45:29):
What do you say about the Bengals and Steelers? Do
you think we should make this a certain game of
the week.
Speaker 4 (01:45:33):
You know what, I have no problem with that, Ah baby,
that's right.
Speaker 3 (01:45:39):
Oh baby, this is our win shulers cheesy, cheezy spread
of the weekend. Sure you can have a football party
without wind shulers. You can also throw a pass without
a receiver.
Speaker 4 (01:45:53):
Why would you do anything.
Speaker 3 (01:45:54):
Neither one's gonna score you any points, so you better
make sure you got plenty of wind shulers on hand
for your next get together, especially over the holiday season.
Our friends at Win Schulers Austin sent us a care
package today. They sent us a care package, and in
that care package they mentioned that this Bengals offense has
been a jugger not as of late. Al Golden was
(01:46:15):
seen stretching with the defense earlier in the week. Yes,
we're trying anything, Al Golden stretching. Joe Burrow back at practice.
Bengals win. I don't even worry about the points. Bengals
money line seasons back on. Can Joe Burrow play against
the New England Patriots. We'll find out next week. But
the seasons a lie because they go into Pittsburgh and
(01:46:36):
they win a game on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:46:37):
Every year around this time, the Bengals start to do something.
They start to play a little bit better, they start
to put it all together. They start to suck you
back in and make you believe. And they do it
again with a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 3 (01:46:53):
Pittsburgh shout out to win Schuler's shout out to our picks.
We're done early today, unfortunately, so when we come back,
I believe we got a football in the NATI ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, The Friday Football Frenzy. Welcome back.
It is football in the NATI. It's also the end
of today's show and the week here on the Friday
(01:47:14):
Football Frenzy ESBN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Why, well,
we're done early because of what Austin. Kentucky basketball.
Speaker 4 (01:47:24):
Yes, I believe Kentucky plays tonight and their covers gets
underway at five thirty, So we move up the pep
Rally show from two thirty to five thirty. And uh
so we're finished at two thirty. All right, So Dan
and Lapp coming up, Dan and Lap on the way.
Speaker 3 (01:47:41):
One other quick thing, and we mentioned this earlier in
the show when talking about Thursday Night football from from
last night. The balance Austin is fascinating to me in
the National Football League between teams that are competing right
now to win a Super Bowl, that have the rookie
(01:48:01):
quarterback deal and teams that have went and paid their quarterback.
If you look at kind of where the top quarterback
salaries are in the National Football League, it's hit or miss.
I mean two is one of the top paid quarterbacks
that has failed miserably. Mahomes up there as well. But
Mahomes is a good, team friendly deal by all accounts
and has allowed Kansas City to keep winning. But the
(01:48:22):
line in the NFL is just incredible to me, Austin,
of teams that have rookie quarterbacks and can they get
it right? If you think of that right now? New England, Denver,
the Chicago Bears, who are up and coming with a
six and three record, But the teams that and I
(01:48:43):
guess you could throw Indian there, not that they have
a rookie quarterback, but Daniel Jones was at an extreme
value that you're almost operating under the umbrella that you
can be aggressive and go get a sauce gardener. Do
you think one way is better than the other? Austin? Like,
do you think if you don't have the right front
office in place, can you win a championship with your
(01:49:04):
quarterback as one of the three or five highest paid
quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 4 (01:49:10):
Yeah, I mean I feel like you can if you
have somebody that is that good, that is that much
of a game changer, if you have a top three,
top four, top five quarterback, Yeah, do you think anything
is possible?
Speaker 3 (01:49:23):
Do you think it's harder in the NFL? To build
a team around a big quarterback contract, but you know
you've got one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
Or is it harder to piece it together around the
rookie quarterback? Like I look at Drake May and I
think Drake May is going to be one of the
best quarterbacks in the league. He's an MVP candidate right
(01:49:44):
now in the National Football League. He's got the New
England Patriots playing the best football out of anyone. When
it comes to roster construction, take a bow, knicks. Is
it easier to build that and still have maybe a
question or two about your quarterback, but more money to
spend elsewhere, Or is it better to have the quarterback
in your pocket. You know you got one of the best,
(01:50:05):
now build around him. And I'm not talking here because
we've talked about this with the Bengals a lot. I'm
talking about on the NFL broad slate of things, like
if you take a very good front office, a very
good GM, is it easier to build knowing your quarterback's
already in house, or around the rookie quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:50:23):
I think it's a little easier around a rookie because
you can be more aggressive. You can take some more
swings and not be hurt by it. Like when you
have a guy on a bigger deal, you might have
a little bit less wiggle room, less opportunity to miss
and still survive it. And for that reason, when you
(01:50:44):
have a top flight front office, the way that contracts
are structured and all that, you can kind of protect
yourself against that. But when you are are building around
a rookie deal, rookie quarterback, I think it makes everything easier.
You can just be a little bit more aggressive. I
mean like New England's a perfect example. They drafted May,
they make this whole change, and what were they doing
(01:51:06):
in free agency? They were uber aggressive, went out and
got the best available defensive tackle, Milton Willis Williams from Philadelphia,
and gave him a ton of money. Well guess what,
the Patriots still lead the league in cap space over
the next couple of years, so they can continue to
build around Drake May. And they're already nine and two,
So it certainly makes a lot of sense. I think
where it gets tricky as a team like Kansas City
(01:51:28):
or a team like Cincinnati, where yeah, your quarterback's making
a lot of money, but you also have three or
four other guys that are due a lot of money,
like Jamar Chase, like t Higgins. The Bengals have kind
of run out of those. But if you think of
Kansas City, they have Chris Jones and Creed Humphrey and
Trey Smith and car Loftis is coming up, Mahomes and
(01:51:52):
Kelsey and and so that's where you have to be
really buttoned up in your draft strategy. You have to
be really buttoned up in your free agency strategy and
all that. So I don't know that it's an exact science.
That's like, only teams with quarterbacks on rookie deals can
can build a contender and get to the Super Bowl.
I do think you can with those other great quarterbacks,
(01:52:13):
but that's where the difference in the actual front office
shows up.
Speaker 3 (01:52:16):
Sure, that's our final football in the NATI. This has
been the Friday football Frenzy. What a loaded football weekend
from high school to college to the National Football League.
Noon kick tomorrow for the Bearcats and the Arizona Wildcats.
You've got a late kick in Columbus between Ohio State
and UCLA Sunday. You got Bengals, Steelers. You also got
(01:52:39):
uc in Mount Saint Mary's and the Xavier Musketeers. A
tough one tonight Austin on the road at Iowa. Tough
one for the Xavier Musketeers. But that really concludes what
the weekend is set to be. No FC Cincinnati Bengals
on the road against the Steelers. Ideally, we're talking Monday
about the Bengal season and still being on and a
(01:53:02):
lot of conversation around the New England Patriots. Enjoy that
for next week. For now, enjoy the start of your weekend.
Have a great one. It's been the Friday Football Frenzy
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station
