Speaker 1 (00:01):
Yeah, there's gonna be a snow day around here for
tomorrow and probably for Wednesday. Brian Murray joins US Harris
County Office of Emergency Management. He is their Deputy Emergency
Management Coordinator. Harris County is a big place, but as
big as it is, there are no snowplows in Harris County?
Are there? Brian? You know there aren't.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I do understand that our friends at text dot are
looking to bring in some down from around the state,
but it's kind of hard to justify millions of dollars
for equipment that you use once every twenty years.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Exactly. We do. We do what we can do well
at least this is in eighteen ninety five, you know,
Valentine's Day, eighteen ninety five, we got a twenty inch
snowstorm here in Houston. Can you imagine that? You know?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I used to live on the shores of Lake Erie,
so yes, unfortunately I can, but I can't imagine it here.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
No, No, it's gonna be crazy here. So what are
the things that you can do? How can you get
Harris County ready? I guess you could put some salt
and Brian on the roads, right and hope it helps
at least a little bit.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
So we know that the folks at Textat are partners
in the city, the folks of the Toll Road Authority
have been treating roadways and bridges and overpasses. That's only
going to go so far. I think once we start
getting to the point where, you know, we start seeing
the snow falling and sticking, we get some ice mixed
in there, we're pretty much gonna need to be staying
at home. I would say that, you know, wherever you

(01:17):
are at dinner time tonight is probably where you need
to look at staying through you know, most of Wednesday. Yeah,
Other than that, you know, I think our biggest focus
has been on making sure that we had warming centers available,
not just for our you know, residents who are experiencing homeless,
but maybe some folks who for one reason or they
don't have access to heat. We've managed to, you know,
county and Immediate partners have thirty five warming centers on

(01:38):
tap around the county. I believe the City of Houston
has another ten with their multi service centers. So we're
actually looks we feel feel pretty good about there right now,
and we can always flex to open up some more
if we have to, you know, after that, Jimmy, it's
all on it's all on each of us as an
individual to take care of people, pats, pipes, and plants.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Exactly right, exactly right. Frozen pipes are probably one of
the biggest concerns I would think that most residents have
because record to be down probably most spots down around
twenty degrees for tomorrow night, and that can cause some problems.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, sure, Kenon. You know, I feel like you know,
from what I'm hearing, we may not quite get cold
enough where you know, we have to worry too much
about it. But I know we spent all day yesterday
taking care of our exterior pipes and plants, and you
know you've still got some time before this evening to
do the same at your house.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah. One of the things that it usually happens, can
sometimes I should say happen in the big city like
Houston with this kind of weather, especially when it gets
particularly colder, water main breaks. How concerned are you about
water main breaks because if you start having all that
water end up on roadways with those cold temperatures, we're
talking about skating rink.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, I mean, and that is something we'll have to
watch for you know, as I said, we feel like
most of the roadways are going to be pretty well
impassable anyhow, so it's kind of an insult to injury
situation if that happens, Jimmy. But you know, I think again,
that's something for the government folks to worry about. The
individuals need to focus on their own properties.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
All right, Brian, thanks for joining, I appreciate it. That
is Harris County Office of Emergency Management Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator,
Brian Murray,
