is obviously mixed. In fact, we're gonna be more sleep
than snow at the moment where we are in the Galleria,

fill you in on the forecast. I'm not sure if
Terry's in earlier or not. It doesn't matter. We'll get
you all the weather details coming up in eight minutes.

The only ones I can find so far that are
cheering for the snow are for my grandkids.

That's Houston Mayor John Whickmeyer. We are in the thick
of this right now winter storm, and so the city
could see some of the highest snow totals before it's
all said.

Speaker 8 (02:57):
And done, major impacts from Houston all the way out
to Galla. So these are the areas that should see
some of the highest snow amounts. Lake Jackson all the
way out to Katie. More moderate impacts farther off to
the west a little lower.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Meteorologist Anthony Ona is there. Mayor Whitmeyer will join Jimmy
at seven fifty this morning. As of now, Urkat is
reporting no issues with the grid. There's plenty of power
in reserve. There are minimal power outages, according to Center Point.
Darren Karen of Centerpoint says they've got the personnel just
in case something does go wrong.

The more ice that we have, the more concerning it
becomes because of what it can do to trees and
limbs and other things.

So we are very prepared though and ready to go.

And as we told you yesterday, most school districts are
closed through tomorrow. The updated list is at KTRH dot com.
Other closures include the airports, courts, and government offices. Bus
service is also suspended. Now we're getting this weather just
six months after being hit by Hurricane Beryl.

We've survived rough stuff before. I've done Harvey.

We've done hurricanes, We've now done winter storms, and so
just you know.

Keep blankets ready and all of that stuff. And it's

interstates are getting taken care of. Side streets are going
to be a little bit ewer and further between.

Harris County Deputy OEM Coordinator Brian Murray says, warm centers
have also been prepared across the county.

Sitting that's ten warming centers up being set up. Precink
commissioners and some of our partners are upping up in Harris.

Good morning. We're here early today, and the reason why
we're here early today is we're experiencing something that we
don't normally experience here in Houston. It's called a winter storm,
and we might as well enjoy it. Let's snow, let
it snow, let us leap, let's do whatever it's going
to do is just stay where you are. Hunker down,
open up the windows, and enjoy it at least when

(08:39):
it gets like assuming it's still snowing. Then, so far
we really haven't gotten much. But we're not really you know,
we're not going to judge this storm based on the
amount of snow that we actually get. I'm gonna I'm
gonna go ahead and put my neck on the line
and say, I don't think we get the one to
three inches. Maybe an inch, but I don't think we
get the three inches. And I certainly don't think that

the nineteen sixty snowfall is in jeopardy. That's the one
where we officially got four point four inches of snow
here in Houston. I don't think that's in jeopardy with
this one. But it doesn't take much. And as we've
been finding out all morning, it's snow and it's sleep,
and the sleep it very quickly can turned ice on
the roads. And I think we're already seeing that. You

may see something out there driving today. I mean, if
you do go out and drive, hopefully you don't, but
if you see something out there that kind of looks
like I don't know, it looks like a maybe you
think it's a garbage truck, but it's got this big
plow on the front. It's called a snowplow. They have
this thing in states the routinely gets snow, and evidently
twenty two of them have been shipped to the greater

Houston area. You may see one today. Although I would
think more of what they should be doing assaulting versus
worrying about plowing HIV stores. This also tells you that
we took this storm pretty seriously. HIV stores currently are closed.
They closed at ten pm last night. They do not
reopen until ten o'clock this morning. That is is Mike
will tell you that, Sky Mike, that is a very

rare thing that just doesn't happen. They stay open all
the time. Not in this case, and and and rightfully so,
there's no reason who's going to go out the grocery
store at midnight to shop when the weather's doing this.
So I don't blame them at all. That's the right
thing to do. All right, let's do a little traffic
and weather together. Absolutely, Sky Mike. So so far, I

guess it's it's really when you get right down to it,
it's the fly first and foremost. You want to go
anywhere where there's a fly over, right.

Yeah, no ramps obviously, no bridge is nothing where you
have to go, you know, up in the air way
up here, you know, to get from two nine each
to the West Sam ramp or that Grand Parkway ramp side.
You couldn't pay me. I just there's no way. You're way, way,
way better off driving on streets. Honestly, Jimmy, I don't
even want to get on an overpass, just you know,
just because I don't want to do anything that's you know,

thank god, it's flat here in Houston. So if I could,
I would, you know, I would stay off the freeways completely.
That's why if you're on the north side, if you
absolutely had to drive, like your essential personnel, I do
Shepherd from the north side, Telefront, from the south side,
Navigation from the east side, Memorial from the west side. Closures.
I've got more roads that are it will be faster

to say what's open, but two ninety closures all the
way from from West Sam Man Grand Parkway.

Yeah, Grand Parkway. Looks like we've got closures all the
Tomball side, all the way over to the Woodlands Fort
Ben toll roads shut down one six from twenty ninety
four on the other side of the bridge all the
way up to NASA one. Let's see two twenty five
Scarborough to the East Sam and make that to the loop.
Now go Freeway Dixie Farm Road to the south Loop

is shut down. North Freeway six to ten to Northgate Crossing.
We we're gonna have to play Metole song again. East
Texa Townsend all the way to six ten North Sam
to I forty five. The connectors are all shut down, thankfully.
I don't want anybody on those connectors. West Park eastbound
between Gaston Road to the fort Man County line. That's closed.

And I mean that's just part of the list for
right now. So we've got closures. I want anybody on

probably for something along the lines of, you know, eighteen
to twenty inches of snow, because that's what it took
to get your attention, eighteen to twenty inches of snow.
Which is not to say I'm not taking this lightly.

I get it. I understand. You know, the roads are
the big issue, which is why you know everybody's off
and and why the schools are all closed, and we
don't need to be go out going out there and
testing our four wheel drive capabilities that will not help
you on ice in any way, shape or form. So
again we urge you to police stay home and you know,
only go out in the event of you really need to,

and stay away from overpasses and flyovers and anything else
that bridge, anything where the air can get underneath and
really freeze what is already there. Also, we're going to
deploy something a little bit new today and try this
when you get up and about when you either hit
the roads, I mean, if you hit the roads, call

the house or you did go into work, you're an

have some observations about what you're seeing out there, on
how people are behaving or how they're acting or what

the situation where so many executive orders were not just
that they were signed on one day the way they

were signed. Most presidents sit in the Oval Office and
they just you know, sign sign sign, sign, signed, and
they may have a few members of Congress who were there,
you know, peeping over their shoulders and getting handed a pen.
But that's not really what happened yesterday. Trump was everywhere
signing executive orders. The one that really got to me.
We'll share some audio from that one a little bit

was the signings at the Capitol One arena. That's where
the post inauguration I'll put it in air quotes parade.

It wasn't really a parade. You couldn't have a parade
with they can't do a parade indoors, but they had

know he's signing all these executive orders. They're telling the
crowd what the executive order is. They're cheering. Very true,
very very Trumpian. So let's get to some of these
orders that One of the first orders that Trump signed

was involving the January sixth prisoners.

which is that's good. That's going to limit our snow
amounts that will continue to pick up today. But I
think another one to three inches of snow is a
fair estimate of what most of the area is going
to get. There may be some brief heavier snowbands, so
we may see as much as four to five inches

of new snow this morning. Now, with all the cold
air that's in place, the temperatures are going to struggle today.

It's been a little bit slower to turn over from
the sleet down along the coast where your call are
actually called in from. As he gets further north into
the city, the conditions are going to.

Get a lot worse.

We have a lot of snow on the roadways. We
do have text dot currently out with plows, you know,
howten do we say that here working to it keep
at least one lane of the freeways open, and so
they're working. That's kind of the mission right now is
to keep one lane of our freeway system open and
treat those lanes.

Speaker 6 (01:01:07):
But we will continue to see.

Speaker 44 (01:01:09):
Snow probably becoming a little bit heavier as we get
towards sunrise, with some more banding sitting up, And it
wouldn't surprise me if we got some quick burst of
one two three inches here across the Metro area between
about sunrise and ten eleven AM. But then it's gonna
kind of start shifting down toward the coast and offshore
by one two o'clock this afternoon.

That'll be the end of this. The real kind of next.

Story is with the snow on the ground clearing skies
really cold to night. We're talking mid upper teens to
low twenties across all of the Metro area. Obviously, that
will refreeze or really freeze anything that is on the
ground out there that has melted a little bit. And
then second infrastructure, right your pipes, even protected infrastructure, could

have some issues tonight. So tonight we're really gonna have
to watch for that type, So we haven't had to
really deal with that yet with temperatures kind of in
the upper twenties, but tonight it's going to be that
kind of critical night.

We warm up tomorrow, I'll probably get some.

Speaker 44 (01:02:03):
Melting, but freeze again WEDNESDA night Thursday morning, so we
could have some refreezing this time, maybe more of that
that black ice where you can't really see it on
some of the roadways and bridges. So we're gonna be
dealing with this at least into Thursday morning in some areas.

Yeah, I haven't imagine. So I think too that the
thing that concerns me at least a little bit. I
don't know about you, but with temperatures getting as cold
as they're going to get tonight, usually that can set
off a few broken water mains in the city. And
if we have something like that, then you take those
temperatures and you throw some water from from broken water
mains into the mix, and you've got yourself a skating

rink before you know it.

Yeah, that's exactly right.

It's that it's it's sprinkler systems that weren't prepared properly

Even right now, it would freeze with us in the
upper twenties, and so you know, that's why we've been
saying the last several days, you know, make these precautions,
take these cautions to try to prevent that. And then

cold and snowing out there, but by this afternoon the
snow stops to you know, drain some of this stuff
out of those pipes and everything and make sure we

can try to minimize any structure, any infrastructure damage tonight
and tomorrow morning.

usually talk to you during hurricane season, so this is
quite unusual. One more question for you here, because we
just got a blizzard warding out of Beaumont. What in
the world.

like Charles, the Weather Service. Like Charles, they're getting a
quarter mile visibility and heavy snow with thirty five mile
in our winds and so, uh, it's about as close
as you're ever going to get to a blizzard down here.
So the blizzard warning from Beaumont to like Charles over
to Lafayette. And you know this just just kind of
to bring you know, this is a Houston problem for us.

But if you look, this is all along the entire
Gulf Coast, the entire itun corridor from Texas all the
way to Florida, accumulating snow potentially up to seven an
eight inches in the city of New Orleans. Wow, their
greatest snowfall ever two point six inches.

the pipe situation. Here's what's going on. There are differing
messages coming out of Houston Public Works in Harris County.

Houston public Works urging us to avoid dripping water from
our faucets, while Harris County says you should. Here's the
bottom line. Most plumbers would tell you, and I think
I mentioned this yesterday in the show, most plumbers would
tell you you should drift your pipes, especially tonight we've

(01:15:03):
got temperatures going into the upper teens around twenty degrees,
just to keep some water flowing here, even if you've
done your level best to winterize things as much as
you can, if the water is still going to your house,
if you haven't cut off the water, then I think
probably you're better off dripping it now. The reason why
the City of Houston is urging you to stop doing
that is because the city's infrastructure in such bad shape

and the system is fragile, and they're worried about the
thousand plus active water leaks that are going on in
the city's water structure. Now they're asking you to not
do it, to sacrifice, potentially sacrifice your plumbing because of
the infrastructure condition in the City of Houston. Not that

we shouldn't be good neighbors, but whose fault is it
that our infrastructure is in that kind of shape? You know,
at the end of the day, aren't you more inclined
to take care of your own home than to worry
what's going on in the city? All right? Time for

becomes because of what it can do to trees and
limbs and other things.

the afternoon we should be dry. I'm not sure if
we'll see any sunshine. The clouds may take a little
longer to clear out, but we may wind up with sunshine.
Another one to three inches of snowfall I expect through
the morning hours before this all winds down, and we

Temperature wise, only a load of mid thirty. So the
snow's going to hang around, and in fact, it's going
to be a very dangerous night to be on the

so I suspect we'll see some delays in businesses and
schools opening if they do it all Tomorrow. Tomorrow's sunny,

And you know, just judging from the Trenstar cameras, people
do seem to be taking to heart the warning to
stay at home.

I think that's that's they're gonna be the biggest danger
for folks todays if they decide, yeah, well the snow
it stops snowing, so it's time to get back out
on the roads. Keep in mind, you know, I may

every other Texan does well. So I think as long
as we can keep you a one homework, we're going
to be in good shape.

Brian. Let me let me also ask you about something
I saw come out and this is I don't mean
to put you on the spot here, but there's got
contradicting pieces of advice coming from the City of Houston
and Harris County as relates to whether or not you
should be dripping your full It's we're going down into
the teens tonight, upper teens to around twenty degrees and
for a lot of people, that means frozen pipes. You know,

most plumbers would tell you to drip the pipe in
order to keep water moving. The city, however, is concerned
about that because of our old infrastructure and some other
problems that they think could lead to water main breaks.
So what's the best advice that we can give people
about whether or not they should be draining their pipes
or not.

Yeah, that's a tough one.

Speaker 13 (01:43:25):
And certainly, not being a plumber myself, you know, I'm
hesitant to you know, overrule anyone's instructions on this. What
we've been telling folks is, you know, whoever you're paying
your water bill to, whether it's the City of Houston,
whether it's a municipal utility district, check with them and
see what their recommendation is and follow it. I totally
understand you know that there's different points of view on this.
We're certainly not going to you know, get in the

middle of it. I do think the things that you
can do that don't make a difference. If you have, say,
pipes under a bathroom vanity, you know, or you know
that are on your exterior walls, yeah, go ahead and
open up the doors on the vanity. Make sure those
pipes can get some of that warm air.

really safe for anybody to drive on ice, but there
are certain ways to steer when you are when you're

sliding on the ice, they can help straighten.

Rule number one is if it's too directorss to drive,
don't drive. But lets say I heard an individual earlier
this morning lost control, hit a wall. I mean, I know,
the impulses, hit the brakes. That is the worst thing
you could do on ice roads because you just ascerbate
the condition, steer, get off. First thing you want to
do is get off the gas. Get off the gas

and let the car coast and steer into the skid yep,
and try to regain control.

Yep. And if you do have to what I was
gonna say, if you do have to put your foot
on the brake, you pump the brake lightly. Do not
do not slam on the break no matter what you do.

Absolutely, I mean, if it takes you a mile to stop,
then do so. Also, coming across bridges and overpasses, as
soon as you approach that overpass, get off the gas
and just coast across the bridge.

All of a sudden, especially with automatic cars, if it
down shifts or anything going up up a pass, you
can actually lose traction.

You ever notice that that whenever you do get something
like snow, the first thing they do, especially in places
they don't get snow all the time, is they pull
out a ruler and they can be in a parking
lot somewhere and they will, you know, they'll measure the snow,

no matter how little snow there is, They'll put down
the ruler so you can see exactly how much show
there is, how much snow there is. And then if
they really get bored, they start doing snow angels in
the snow or writing messages back to the audience and
the TV station in the snow. That's that's kind of
what I call reporter one oh one snow coverage. I
just do a little traffic in weather together. That was

get your car fixed.

have cooperated. We have a great city and great people,
and we meet our challenges and I would just urge
everybody to continue to stay off the roads. The danger
will be when this melts later today and in freezers overnight,
so in the morning will be be a major concernative.

out after lunch and go to fire and police stations,
our emergency center, so all hands on deck. I'm O're

tonight going down into the upper teens around twenty degrees,
as far as water means and that kind of thing.

dangerous conditions for traveling. So I still encourage everybody to
stay out throws, looking out for our most vulnerable residents
