Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show Mike chris
Pino joined by Jaden Ross the Junior as the Huskies
get set the head to Boston and take on b YU. Jaden,
thanks for joining us. Uh, this is a real big
one for the Huskies. You got warmed up with three
non conference games. Uh. Do you sense the the guys
(00:20):
feeling a sense of of real excitement about getting to
play a team like b Yuh?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, first of all, thanks for having me on. It
means a lot.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
And then also I would just say, yeah, you know
you can, especially today and in practice. The coaches set
the tone with the with the sense of urgency, and
I'd say it's being followed by the players pretty pretty
pretty well. So I think we're ready to go really
excited for this one for sure.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Now this coaching staff is an excitable bunch, would you
Is that fair for me to say?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I think I would use passionate. I'll use very passionate.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yeah. They get after it, even coaching. I mean I
think if they I don't know, I mean Nardi's a
good he was a good player, Dan Hurley very good player,
Kamani Young very good player. I mean those guys in
there in their primes were quality basketball players, So they
know what it's all about, don't they.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, they know what it takes.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
And on the on the flip side, they've seen it
on the coaching side as well, But it takes from
players that they've coached, what it takes from a team
as a collective, and and everything that goes into it.
So they know everything that's required to be successful.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I didn't mention Luke Murray because I don't know about
anything about his game, but he's a good I've watched
him do his scouting stuff with you guys, you know,
and shoot arounds and stuff, and boy, when you're getting
ready for a game with this coaching staff, it feels
like there's not going to be anything missed on what
you've got to know about your opponent.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, not much at all.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
You know, as far as like their plays, you know,
they're really good about that scouting the plays, but also
as well as you know, defensive tendencies, offensive tennessees, and
in the visual players, how we're going to guard certain players,
how we're gonna guard the ball in certain spots on
the court, and all the way down to the smallest situation,
So you know, they do an amazing job at that
(02:10):
and just helping us get prepared.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah, uh, Jade Ross is with us. Where's number twenty
three for the Huskies getting about twenty three minutes a
game and he's opening three games. This is a nice
progression for you, it looks like to me because you're
getting in a little bit of a rhythm in your
basketball game. How important is that to a player to have,
you know, regular time and understanding I'm getting in, I'm
(02:34):
gonna get my minutes and and I'm gonna do what
I can do.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
It means a lot.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Getting a rhythm is really important as a player, just
understanding what's what's going to be expected of you every
time you go out on the floor.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So it's it's definitely.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Huge and it just helps you, you know, settle in
and kind of create a consistency with with how you
approach every single night.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
One thing we've noticed with the Huskies is first three
games is fast breaks. You're getting out on the break.
You guys scoring on fast breaks. How much fun is
that and how much do you think that changes the
tenor of a basketball game because it gets people excited
in the stands and certainly me on the broadcast as you.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Were saying, it's exciting for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I think that's the shift that we've kind of tried
to make this offseason is just you know, getting a
bunch of guys that you know are fast and athletic
and get out and play on the break more So,
that's kind of an adjustment we've tried to make from
last year.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
But that all starts defensively.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Being able to get stops and getting out and running
and playing fast all starts defensively.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
So I'd say we're doing a pretty good job on
that end right now, but.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
We got to continue to keep doing an even better
job because the stretch we're about to have with these
these great teams coming up is it's going to be
pretty difficult.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
So, yeah, you were able to win these first three
games by wide margins, but Dan Hurley, your coach, always
finds something you got to work on. What would you
say was the general take on the first three games
from Dan talking to you guys in film sessions. What
was he looking for more of?
Speaker 2 (04:06):
I would just say, you know, overall toughness.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
I'd say throughout these three games, we have really good
stretches where we play, you know, great basketball for fifteen
to twenty minutes. I would just say just just closing
that out and playing a full forty as well as
just you know, doing a great job on the boards, offensively, defensively,
and defensively overall. So just more toughness because a lot
(04:30):
of the teams we played early on, you know, respective
to where we are, you know in college basketball right now,
we're able to be a little better in the skill category.
But you know a lot of these teams they're gonna
have both. They're going to be able to be very
skilled and play super hard. So that's where we got
to get.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, that's that's something you got to strive for, no
doubt about it. You knock down some jumpers, some threes,
and that's something you don't see in college that much.
Three balls on the end of that breaks. You made
a couple of them, as I recall, and I think
that's even more energized just what the team's trying to do.
Do you agree with that?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:09):
I agree, and I think it all starts by running
hard and transition. I remember talking to ak on a
few just like having two guys on the side, having
one person rim run and the other kind of just
space away on the three. It creates so much open
space on the floor, especially in transition when guys aren't
fully matched up. So yeah, just getting out running as
hard as we can, rim running, trying to get those
(05:30):
open layups, and then reverting to the three. Obviously trying
to get to the rim layups dunks first, but if
that's well guard and then that least three open for us.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Let's talk about dunking for a second here. Now you've
win milled a couple, you've two handed some. If you're
going in and you're pretty much untouched, what are you thinking?
What do you want to use first?
Speaker 2 (05:54):
I'm more of a safety guy.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
I'm more of a safety and power you know, just
get up, jump as high as I can, break the rim,
and you know, just kind of use that energy and.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Just kind of feed into the next play.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I don't really think, like, do nothing too flashy, but yeah,
I would say that.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Yeah, dunk's a dunk, and it sure feels good at
the end of a fast break, that's for sure. Jaydon
Ross with us quick time out, We'll be back at
a moment with more of the Yukon men's basketball coaches
