pulse about the value of protecting yourhealth and wealth and the unique approach Nasaw

their own health and also the healthof our community. Very excited to have
three representatives today from Nasaw Financial Groupjoining our conversation, joining me here today

each of them. Is first,is the chief Marketing Officer for NASA is
Paul Tyler. So, Paul,welcome to Pulse of the Region. Kate,
thank you very much for having uson today. Of course, of
course, no, we're excited.I think this is the first one.

of Community Engagement and Communications at NASAU. So Jessica welcome, Thank you,
Kate, happy to be here again. Great And a last, but certainly
not least, a newcomer to theshow is she is a counsel at the

Nassau It is Haley Maldonado. HopefullyI don't mess that up, so it's
all good. My maiden name waseasier. That's when you got a question.
Thank you. It's good to behere, yeah, of course,
of course. So a lot ofgreat things to talk about today. But
first things first, which hopefully willbe a reminder for many listeners, but

they're always important to do some introductions. So Paul first, if you don't
mind, we put you on thehot seat just to tell us a bit
about NASA. Happy to be here. Happy to be on your hot spot.
I promise it's really not that high. Yeah, and thanks for the
opportunity to tell people a little bitmore about our company. NASA Financial Group
is based in downtown Hartford and loveI know the boat building. That is

the headquarter building that we're very proudof, and we run most of our
operations out of today. We arereally focused on meeting people's needs and retirement
and we do that by selling annuities, which gives people guaranteed income they can
outlive other things. And we alsooffer Medicare supplement insurance, which is an

important aspect of protecting people's health asthey age. Definitely. And can you
share about your role within the organization. Yeah, certainly, Yeah, Chief
Marketing officer. I really am responsiblefor helping develop our brand, you know,
and really our employees are probably thebiggest spokespeople for our brand here today.

I also lead a lot of ourinnovation efforts. We have an incubator
that we've built, launched about fouror four years ago, and we're actually
hosting Hartford Innovation. We can othertalk. We might, yes, Pluggage,
I was just gonna say, Igo, we might have some time
to talk about that too. No, And I will also say to Paul's
a huge supporter of the MHA,serving on our board of directors, also

very active with CTIFS. So appreciateall you do for us and for the
region, Paul. And next isHaley whyn We'll put you on the hot
seat next, And if you couldtell a little bit about your role and
how long you've been with NASA.Sure. So, I'm on the NASA
legal team and I've been a partof NASA since twenty sixteen when they acquired
Phoenix. Fantastic. All right,and how about you, miss Jessica fail.

Well, I'm actually celebrating three yearsNASA and I work for NASA's Corporate
Communications and Community Engagement team, andmy position has morphed a little bit into
the triathlon team manager. That's okay, Now this is what we are going
to talk more about. So you'reteasing it. I love it a little
(04:53):
bit, a little bit on thattriathlon so which is wonderful. But first
things first, you know, Ithink it's so important just to kind of
touch it really big core of whoNASA is as a company, and you
know, Paul as a retirement company. Really, NASA is committed to helping
to protect people's health and people's wealth. And but I think you guys kind
of look at it, you know, maybe a little bit different than some
other organizations. If you could talka little bit about your approach. Sure,

health, wealth and happiness are reallythree interconnected topics. Health you think
about not going to the hospital,Well it's actually more than that. It's
it's not living longer, but livingliving a better life. Having a long
health span, very very important.Wealth not talking being rich, but we're
(05:42):
talking about people helping people be organizedabout their finances. I think, you
know, if you take control ofyour finances, you plan your retirement,
you've got a personal income state,and you have a balance sheet, you
thought about how you who you needto take care of, how you want
to take care of them. Ittranslates into the rest of spills into the
rest of your life, including yourpersonal fitness. And that really is kind
(06:04):
of the the guts of why Ithink we've all kind of gravitated naturally to
triathlon. That's a I was gonnasay, triathlon a lot of exercise over
in that boat building and I'm alwaysjealous of your gym. I have to
be very honest. I'm still waitingfor maybe an inviteer over there. But
(06:25):
all right, there we go.That was really my goal of the show
today everyone. So but with that, really, Paul, you know,
kind of exercise and promoting that longevity, and you know, if you could
kind of touch a little bit juston you know, it's really more than
the company itself. It's for yourclients, it's for your employees, and
if you could chair a little bitjust more on just why is that such

a pillar for you guys. Yeah, sure, and it's it's it's it's
interesting. Uh, it's just walking. Taking you know, going for a
walk every single day can have adramatic effect on reducing your blood pressure,
using your stress levels, keeping yourselfactive. And I think just regular exercise
(07:06):
is just a sort of a basicbuilding block for staying sane, ye,
staying mobile, and uh generally justyou know, doing you know, one
of these activities, making a habitspills over into a lot of different aspects
(07:28):
of your life. And I thinkyou know, just say take take you
know, show I love quoting.Uh what about Bob you know, baby
steps, baby steps? I likethat. We want we want people to
take a lot of real truly takebaby steps. And you know you don't
have to do a triathlon to dothis, but it means, you know,
get up in the morning and dosomething. If we saw every one

of our clients and police holders dothat, I think we'd all say it's
a great day. Definitely, Andcertainly that truth is you know kind of
belief is for employees as well.And Jessica, I know, doing so
many different programs and you know,just to kind of keep that healthy vibe
around the office and if you couldshare a little bit more about this,
(08:11):
sure, nasall beliefs there is astrong connection between productivity and the office and
the ability to manage stress and totake things to the next level with their
health and wellness. And so wehave a variety of ways that our employees
can get involved in things, whetherit's the triathlon team, or it's taking
a walk or going to our stateof the art gym, which is fabulous
(08:31):
and you're invited anytime, Thank you, I will take you up on that.
And then our HR team is alwayslooking for like webinars or educational opportunities,
so we're just trying to like meetour employees where they are and also
to reduce any barrier of entry,and that's where NASA really gets behind sponsoring
entries or race registrations or there's somefunds available for reimbursement of health and wellness
(08:58):
initiatives, and so we're just tryingto take down any kind of barrier that
might prevent somebody from doing something intentionallyto improve their health and wellness. Fantastic
and one of the big ones comingup is the triathlon, which is going
to be happening in a few weeks. So Paul, can you talk about
this? Sure we are going thedistance seventy point three miles. It's really
(09:22):
going to distance. It really will. Yeah, we really, we really
are. And I think, look, it's it's stretched for a lot of
us personally, you know, thisfirst time, first time a number of
individuals here and in the company havedone this. It's a personal I think
it's it's going to be a greatpersonal experience for a lot of people.
I think as a team, there'snothing better than you know, like we
(09:45):
did today going out with I guessprobably ten people and swimming in a local
lake. I won't name it becausethe sign said for residents only. So
it's very smart moving so harm nofell but uh, you know, but
I think going to distance really isthe theme of our sort of the company.
(10:07):
That kind of products we do,the the products you know that we
offer to clients aren't short term products. These are not products that last year,
you know there they will last youknow the rest of people's lives.
So we our organization has been builtaround durability. It's it's it built around
determination, persistence and uh, youknow, doing the right thing, you
(10:30):
know, every single day for ourclients. I think it's a it's a
great mirror for what we're you know, doing ourselves, and action oftentimes speaks
louder than words, definitely does.And how many employees will be participating in
the team. So we have eighteenmembers on our triathlon team and ice eleven
of them are going to Ironman onSeptember twenty three. Fantastic, and Haley
(10:52):
is one of them. So,Haley, I'm gonna say, how did
you get involved in this? Idon't want to say roped in because I
think it was volunteer, but now, wass It's funny because I had never
in my wildest dreams that I wouldever do a triathlon. I thought it
was for crazy people. But mybackground is like running like nice, easy,
put on your shoes, one footin front of the other. But
(11:13):
so last year our company holiday party, I was talking to Phil, our
CEO and co founder, and hehad kind of started talking about the trathlons
that he'd done, and he haddone his first one within the last few
years and he was just like soenthusiastic and excited when he was talking about
it, and he kind of toldme about the one that he did as
his very first, and that hisbrother his very first, and it just
(11:35):
happened to be one that NASA wasgoing to sponsor for its trathlon team in
twenty twenty three, so like Ikind of was like really motivated hearing him
talk about it, and I decidedit'd be kind of an exciting challenge to
take on. So I decided thatmy goal for twenty twenty three would be
to do my first triathlon, andthis week and will actually be my third
triathlon. Oh my gosh. Soyeah, which Phil warned me about that
(11:58):
two week, said, you know, you're either going to be a person
who does your first triathlon and you'relike, Okay, I checked the box,
I did it, or you're gonnabe hooked and you're never going to
gonna stop doing them. And I'mshocked myself, and I am part of
the latter category. So it'll bevery fun and it's it's kind of made
so much easier because we have thisteam of individuals that we train with and

work with, and it just makesit seem like less of a scary thing
that we're doing because we're taking onthe challenge together. Definitely, I know,
and so many aspects that NASA andNASA employees are getting involved for this
and you know, so Jessica,if you could talk a little bit,
you know, this whole going thedistance theme, which I love, is
you know, really there's other waysemployees are getting involved who maybe aren't participating
(12:39):
in the race. If you couldtalk a little bit about that and what
does the whole day look like.Yeah, so NASA does believe in taking
down the barriers, as I mentioned, and trying to demystify a little bit
about what the sport of triathlon is. And there are the athletes who will
go the full distance seventy point three. We have individuals who participate on a
re team. They have shorter distancetriathlons if you want to do all three
(13:03):
elements, but not at the fullrange. And then also this year for
iron Man, we're bringing employees andencouraging them to volunteer. So during a
triathlon of seventy point three miles,as you can imagine, it takes a
while, maybe five hours or fourif you're Paul Tyler, and so we
(13:24):
want to use that idle time todo some good and so we've joined the
iron Man Green Team, which isa beach cleanup effort at Jones Beach.
And so we have some employees,we have the cheer squad, so the
spouses and the children of our employeeswho are going to compete while their loved
one is out on the course.We'll be doing a beach cleanup effort right
(13:45):
at Jones Beach. Okay, nice. Yeah, And I think it's just
a great way for everyone to feelincluded, that there's a way that you
can be involved. Even if youcan't swim one point two miles or bike
fifty six miles or do a halfmarathon, there's still a spot for you
on our team. And so Ithink that's really helping to build some of
the momentum around us. Definitely,No, that's great. And hey,
(14:05):
I want to go back to youbecause I think you know, and as
we prepped for the show today,you have such a unique kind of NASA
story and you know, so wouldlove if you don't mind sharing a little
bit kind of what the last elevenyears has looked like for you as an
employee at NASA. Sure. So. Yeah, So I've been really fortunate
in the support I've received in mycareer so far. I started at Phoenix
(14:26):
eleven years ago, in an entrylevel position and operations, and then shortly
after NASA acquired US in twenty sixteen, I moved to corporate compliance and I
was fortunate enough that NASA supported mewhile I studied for the Bar exam to
become a lawyer. So once Ipassed that, I moved to in house
council as part of the legal team. But like as with many of us
(14:48):
at NASA, like I wanted tokind of grow even more, so I
was interested in things like corporate transactions. So I talked to my boss and
we decided it might be a goodidea for me at an MBA at night
while I was working, and NASAsupported me in that as well through our
tuition reimbursement program and giving me someflexibility in my schedule. So I really
(15:09):
love that about our company because we'resurrounded by people from the top down that
want to do better and grow andchallenge themselves and filling us. Our co
founders strive for that themselves, andyou can see the influence that has from
the top down because everyone's kind ofsurrounded by a group that encourages each other,
takes on new challenges together, andwe get the support to do that.
(15:31):
So it's just a really nice culturein mindset to have, and I
think it's why we've achieved such amazinggrowth over the years. So it's really
inspiring to kind of look back sincetwenty sixteen and see what we've accomplished.
And I really think it's just thebeginning. Like I'm excited that I'm part
of it. Definitely. No,that's right. I always say NASA is
always comes out in force, whetheryou're around downtown in your T shirt.
(15:52):
It's like there's never a day Igo past the boat building when I'm not
like, oh, you know thatNASA's there, which is incredible. Whereas
I would say running fast at youtoo, that's all the training exactly,
hey, which is great, Whichis great. And Paul, I want
to circle back for you. Youknow, kind of you talked a lot
about going the distance for employees ona whole, but you I understand,
(16:14):
you know, are really involved intriathlons on your own. But then what
does it really mean to be kindof part of this team and almost kind
of your personal going the distance inparticipating in in these NASA supported events.
Yeah, I think it's uh forme for me personally. Listen, I
you know, Haley mentioned you're you'reeither you do one and you're done,
or you do a lot of these, and I'm definitely in the latter category.
(16:37):
I'm not going to tell you howmany of these I've done it,
but it's uh, you know,I find it's a you know, personally,
it's a great outlet for uh myselfpersonally, get time. I'm a
social exerciser. I love doing thiswith teams. I love doing it with
people. You know, my bestweek weekend activity is riding a bike with
(16:57):
my buddies and okay, find acup of coffee, you know, thirty
miles away. And I think Ithink that kind of spills over here.
I mean, you work out withpeople in the gym, you go out,
you swim, you run, youbike. You had a building a
camaraderie that you just wouldn't otherwise buildsitting at a desk or more commonly,
(17:18):
you know, on a zoom calltoday. Definitely, And I think a
lot of your training too, isalso helping us support businesses in the area.
And you know, so, Haley, if you could talk a little
bit about some of the training.I understand you've been in the YMCA in
downtown if that's true. Yeah,yeah, So we're pretty fortunate that we
have so many resources right here inHartford to support all of our fitness goals.
(17:40):
So NASA was nice enough to provideemployees with friend memberships at the YMCA,
which is actually like nice across thestreet from our office. You can
get from our windows, so reallyno excuses not to go over there and
train. And we've also actually workedwith like the Riverfront Recapture in a number
of ways, like, for example, NASA how a dragon boat race team,
(18:02):
and we've partnered with Hartford Marathon Foundationfor a number of races, and
NASA has covered our race registration.And one thing I love about that in
particular is we also have like we'vewe've mainly Jessica has managed to get a
bunch of volunteers to help with thingslike water stops, So even if you
don't feel like you're ready to likego and do the full race by yourself,
(18:23):
you can still participate and be partof the energy and contribute in other
ways. So it's a great wayto get involved in the local community.
Definitely, well in that kind ofthe last section of the show would like
to touch on, is that kindof community involvement, that charitable giving which
really you know coincides with with NASAday in and day out. And also
again just back to employees. SoPaul, you know, with that is
(18:45):
really why is it? You know, and you've touched on a lot of
examples thus far, but why isit really just so important for you to
invest in your employees and really aredoing that in a in a very very
different way and in a day today way, you know, in terms
of from everything from fitness classes toemployee outing things of that nature. You
know, what really is the mindsetbehind that? Yeah, well it's a
(19:06):
great question. And you know,first and foremost, we are entirely focused
on creating a tremendous customer experience.Our tagline is working harder to be your
care of choice and it's care ofa choice for our agents, care choice
for our policyholders. Now to dothat, you know, you really have
to create a great employee experience.You know, if you have people to
(19:27):
put the input energy beyond what youhave to do in your job description,
you need people who want to doand give more just you know, kind
of like Kayley described, and youknow, I think this is it.
We want people. We want tosupport people in what they're doing, their
(19:47):
educational advancement, their their physical advancement. They're involved in the community and as
many possible ways as we can,because the payback isn't marmous, definitely,
And Jess, we'll have you chimein here too, because really you and
your team are doing a lot ofthis on a day to day basis,
and you know, really investing inthe local community. And this year,
(20:08):
you know, we have you haveconnecting those efforts with the triathlon team.
So there's a lot of synergies happeninghere. If you could talk and share
some details there well. Just continuingwith the going the distance of course,
NASA going the distance in the community, and what we're doing this year is
tying in our triathlon team and theawareness that the team is generating with some

awareness to the Ukrainian Congress Commission ofAmerica, which is the UCCA, and
they oversee the Unbroken National Rehabilitation Centerin Lviv, Ukraine, and NASAL partnered
with celebrity chef and humanitarian Rachel Raywho is as yes for that organization,
and Rachel actually sent nassau's employees andthe team video message inviting us to participate
(21:00):
in a fundraising effort that she's doingto build a kitchen. Okay, and
it will provide three meals a dayto five thousand men, women and children
who are affected by the war.So this is a great fundraising campaign.
We're doing a lot of splash onsocial media about it. So if people
want to learn more about Unbroken,they can go to Nasau's LinkedIn page or

Facebook page, Instagram and you're goingto learn more about the athletes that are
participating on our team. But you'realso learn more about Rachel Ray and the
Unbroken Center, and we're hoping thatpeople will get involved. I think this
is a nice platform and a wayto bring some awareness and we're hoping people
will join us on our journey togo the distance. So the Distance,

I love it. I love it. And a lot of other things happening
in the community that Nasau is intaking the lead on. Paul you mentioned
it, and I want to goback to his innovation week which is happening
the last week in September was aSeptember twenty fifth week, correct, Okay?
Good, that's I was like,I think I have the dates right,
but can you tell first off,just what is it? Does this
week look like? Sure? Yeah, we have a packed week and thanks

to a lot of great organizations herein the community. This actually started with
the conversation with Susan Winkler around howdo we ask from ctifas she has a
tremendous summit coming up well Insurance Marketsummit, and we said, you know
what if we actually built an innovationweek and you know around what you're doing.
(22:26):
And so I think at this pointwe I think we have maybe twelve
organizations participating. If you go toHartford Innovation Week dot com a list of
all events taking place for four days. Fantastic. Yeah, Monday, it's
a holiday for a number of people, so we schedule events from Tuesday through
(22:47):
through Friday. But there is somethingfor anybody, Uh, please come sign
up if or other organizations have otherevents that you know, we want to
want to join. Their very welcome, but a lot of people show up
and kind of see what see whywe're all excited about working here in Hartford.
Definitely, and certainly I know,kind of great for the region where
(23:07):
there's a lot of people traveling into participate and you know, potentially go
to the Insurance Capital Summit, butthen also able to attend others which you
know, from an economic development standpoint, if you could talk a little bit
just on why that's so important tohave this week here in Hartford. Yeah,
sure, and we've sort of foundthis with some of the other events
we did. You know, there'sa lot more power working together than working
(23:29):
independently. You know, Hartford isa great destination, but it's you know,
it's it's a little bit of ahike for people from other parts of
the country. The more we cangive people multiple reasons to be here and
stay here from for more than justa day or part of a day,
I think much better for the hotels, much better for the restaurants, and
(23:51):
I think much better for the employeesor you know, working in the working
in the area. Definitely, it'sgoing to be certainly a busy week that
week here in high which will begreat. And Jess, anything else coming
up kind of for the remainder ofthe year for NASA, I'm sure there's
probably a massive list of things,from charity events to different employee outings,
(24:11):
things of that nature. I don'tknow anything that comes to mind for you.
Well, we're really leaning into theinnovation we can trying to encourage our
employees to get active not only tothe events that are being hosted here in
our building building, but also outin the community. There'll be a lot
of opportunities to get behind the entrepreneursand the innovators that are here in the
(24:33):
Harvard area. Nice, very good, Very good, Haley. How about
you in terms of kind of otherAnd I would say other, you've already
done your third try or you'll bedoing your third triathlon. I don't know
when you'd have time really to doanything else. But you know there are
other programs that you participate in atNASA. Yeah. I mean we're pretty
fortunate NASA that we have a numberof employee resource groups and you can kind
of, depending on your schedule,be participate in every throwing or just pieces
(24:57):
of it. So I'm an activemember of the Women NASA, So I
like to do a lot of differentevents through through that organization in addition to
the fitness goals. Nice, verygood. So and then in your spare
time, which there's no spare timewith it, fantastic, Well, so,

of the work you're doing here inthe community. Yeah, please go to

putting the question out there and whatdo you love most about living and or
working here? In the Hartford region. So and know if I could put

one of you on the spot withthat question. First, everyone's looking at
each other and they're looking at melike, I don't know, Okay,
I have might in front of me, so I'll go for it. So
we already touched upon it a littlebit. But just to reiterate that Hartford
has everything you need to support yourwellness journey, if it's just taking a
walk, as Paul mentioned earlier,down in the riverfront where going across Nasaw
(26:49):
Science Plaza, can I get sciencecentered down to Buschnell Park. The YMCA
has the pool. Hartford Marathon Foundationis always offering different runs and races,
including shorter distance triathlon. So there'sreally not an excuse to not get involved
in some sort of health and wellnessinitiative. And I just love that it's
(27:10):
all here right in our backyard.It's something you can pop out of your
office, go on your lunch break, go have coffee with someone, but
go there on foot to get youto get your daily steps in. Yes,
no, it is super walkable andvery wellness friendly. Definitely, And
for anyone who hasn't been up onthe Nassau Plaza, the Flower, the
gardens everything. I mean that itselfis just a great little walk there,
(27:32):
so perfect. And Haley, whatabout you? I mean, in addition
to what Jess already talked about,like I like, how many different things
we have to do here, Likewe haven't touched on it, but the
arts, like we have the Bushnellor we have like Broadway shows that travel
here, and I think I sawAnastasia before I went to Broadway at the
Hartford Stage. Yes, the ConnecticutForum. We have like things like the

Food Truck Festival, the Jazz Festival. Like it's impressive, Like the number
of different events that we have todo and go have fun with your family,
like right here in the city.Great answer, I love it.
I always get such different answers,which is so fun. It's yeah,
how about you, Paul, Yeah, I'll take all take a sort of
the the innovation angle. I thinkwhat I like most about Hartford is the

way the community gets behind in ourcheerleaders for people who invest time and energy
in this area. Susan has donejust a great job building a whole program
pulling companies from the UK Hartford.I had the opportunity to actually meet with
one of the companies that just youknow, came through recently looking at where
(28:40):
do they question their Their mind waswhere should we put our offices wor plant
the you know, the the flagfor their yes yes so speaking And the
question was, well, why shouldwe do Harford versus New York? And
I said, you know, well, listen your trade Broadway. You got
restaurants. I said, you're goingto be one of maybe a thousand startups

works. If you come up here, you you're going to have a set
