(00:00):
It's Mike Jones. We've got takingback Sunday business and a whole lot more
to get into with my guest today, Adam Lazara. Adam, thanks for
taking some time and let's just getright to it. The last time we
saw you back in November, wehad an awesome time for our DC one
to one pop up show, andthat was the night I was so much
fun. Oh my god, thatwas such a great night at the Black
Cat. Except that was the nightI found out you guys were gonna be
(00:23):
one of the headliners for the Let'sGo Music Festival, which is coming up
next weekend. And I had tokeep that secret for so long. I
hate secrets, dude. It wasthe worst. Uh it's there, there's
well, it's it was. Wewere in the same boat, So I
can, I can. I canempathize with you for sure. What's now?
(00:44):
I gotta ask you if you cansay it, what's the biggest secret
you ever had to keep? Oror maybe you can't say it and it's
still locked away deep in your vault. Oh man, there there's there's for
better or worse. I have awhole mess of them that it just I
don't even know if we would havetime to go into the I think we
have to have three or four phonecalls. Oh man. It's got to
be one of the toughest parts aboutbeing a musician where you got to hide
(01:07):
things and it's like, I wantto tell our fans about new music and
this big tour and everything. Ohman, there's that time between when you
get like your record is done, mixed, mastered. The time between that
day and when it comes out isalmost excruciating because because you're like, I
(01:27):
just want to put it out intothe world. Come on, we spent
so much time making this. Ijust want everybody to hear it now.
Yeah. Though I will say thereis a flip side of it, though,
because then now that I'm talking aboutit, there is there's the other
way to look at it is like, oh wait, this is a thing
(01:49):
that only me and my couple buddiesknow about, and and then so you
feel kind of like you're you're inon something that nobody else knows some how,
So then it's just kind of yoursfor that little period of time.
So I guess there's always excites torecord. That's true. Now, that
is true. That's a good wayto look at it, except you know,
and I'm sure Adam, you havebands that you love and you're like,
(02:12):
what are they doing? What's goingon? You hate that too,
just as much as we do,one hundred no question. Well now it's
not a secret anymore. We've knownfor a couple of months and we're only
a couple of days away now fromtaking back Sunday. You guys are going
to headline the first night of theLet's Go Music Festival with Dashboard Professional and
we got Bush that weekend, theRevivalists, our Lady Peace Dawtry, just
(02:35):
some great bands jamming all week andone can get tickets at Let's gofest dot
com. It's it's gonna be areally fun weekend all around. Yeah,
we are just so excited. Therethere's and it was just I appreciate you
listing off some of the other artists, you know, because we're right in
the middle or we just started thistour and then so it's hard to keep
(02:59):
everything straight. And I will tellyou the very first mixtape I ever received
when I was younger was from afriend of mine that lived I used to
spend summers in Alabama with my grandmotherand a neighbor around around the street made
this mixtape for me and then itwas very bush heavy. So and I
never had a chance to see himplay. I'm gonna ge to see him
(03:20):
play now. I'm really excited aboutthat. Oh that's awesome. I actually
just talked with Gavin Rossdale yesterday,Adam. In fact, I was gonna
ask you a question that I askedhim. I'll save that for a little
while later. But he's sound handsome. My god. When you when you
talked to him, just talking tohim on the phone, you know who
(03:45):
you're talking to. But I've actuallyhad the chance to talk to him face
to face, and that man isintimidatingly beautiful. I'm like, there,
yeah, dreamboat, God spent toomuch time on you and not enough on
me here right, Yeah, it'sjust see, look, if you want
to start a coalition, I'm in. It's too much. And he's too
(04:05):
talented with his music, his uh, his acting as well, and then
he's got all the good looks. It's like, screw you, Gavin Rossdale,
you son of a bee. Yeahyeah, man, least some room
for the rest of us. Right, Well, let's talk though, Let's
talk about you and uh, man, you guys just got your tour started.
A couple of shows in the books, still early. How's this one
(04:26):
going for you? Adam? Everythinggreat so far, man, everything has
been so great. There there's mostevery tour, it'll it'll start out,
uh and and as it gets closer, we'll start to have these conversations like
Okay, what are we going todo for production? And that's when I
chime in and just the wildest ideasthat that that I could think of,
(04:50):
like, Okay, let's bring thisout. We're gonna build this thing.
It's gonna be crazy. And thistour is like one of the probably first
ones that we that we followed throughobviously, like things are like there's no
spaceships because those are hard to comeby, but there's the the just the
stage looks great and we've been havingso much fun. Man, I got
(05:12):
to tell you, like, there'sthere I just I say this all the
time. I'm one of the luckiestpeople that I know. But there's something
that I'm just so happy and proudabout with our band is that when when
you're at a show, you know, like I'm looking at the crowd and
it's people all from ages of liketwelve to like fifty, and everyone's in
(05:32):
this different chapter their life, youknow, you can tell just by looking.
And but there's there's this everyone isgetting lost, so the same thing
at the same time, and it'slike this this like I don't really have
the word for it, like otherthan like fellowship, you know, like
that like that is the one thatkeeps popping in my head and it's like
(05:56):
this this for for me, it'sthis like real world example of actual magic.
It's like time doesn't even exist forthat bit, Like I don't know
how it happens or why it happens. I'm just so happy I get to
be a part of it. Dude, I know one hundred percent what you're
talking about, Adam, because thisis why I love going to show so
much. I would it's the mostexciting thing for me of anything else in
(06:20):
the world, going to a show. Yes, if I can do that
over anything else, because that musicbrings us together. And I know people
complain about folks on their phone recordingit and all that, but you know
what, just forget about that, focus on the band and what that music
means to you, and you're gonnahave the best night every time you go
out to a show. I agreewith you one hundred percent. Dude.
(06:40):
Yeah, man, lifeblood. Yeahyeah, it's it's the thing that connects
us, like breathing oxygen when you'rein that room, when you're when we're
at the Let's Go festival or seeingTake It Back Sunday and Tour or anything.
We're all in that thing together andthat brings us together like nothing else.
It's it's yeah, man, it'slike it it's it's this powerful thing.
(07:01):
It's like this force that they don'tteach you about in school and science,
you know, and to and tobe able to experience, you know,
from my perspective, to be ableto experience it most every night is
like there's what it has done justfor my life and my understanding of even
myself. Man, Like I'll justit's it's like it's just magic. It's
(07:25):
just absolute magic and it and andI'm and I encourage you know anyone that
like, if you're just man, whether you know us or not, or
if it's our show or not, just like go and get lost, because
I feel like it especially now dayslike social media, like we're care we
have little computers that are yelling atus in our pockets all all day long,
(07:47):
every day. You know, we'reso tethered to this stuff, and
then so to have this opportunity tolike just to just put it so far
out in the peripheral for however long, I think anyone would benefit from that,
dude. And this is why,Adam, this is a great reason
to see taking back Sunday, becauseyou guys are gonna be with so many
(08:09):
other bands that maybe people are afan of Dashboard. I'm gonna say though,
if they're a fan of Dashboard, they know your music too, but
maybe not, you know, butthey can see Sunday. You know.
I'm I'm a huge fan of Dashboard, so I'm tun to be able to
go see them too. Yes,well yeah, I remember when we had
our demo before our first record wasout. I went down to North Carolina
(08:33):
because that's where I'm from, andwas hanging out with some friends, and
we went and we saw Chris. We saw Dashboard play at this place called
Local. It's like five or sixor nine oh six, number doesn't matter,
but it's in Chapel Hill and andI remember handing him ah our demo
and being like, hey man,I'm a huge fan this has been I'm
(08:54):
an blah blah blah. And thenyou know, a couple months after that
was when we started recording the firstrecord. So it's like that goes all
the way back to the end withhim, you know. Yeah, you
guys have that bond, and that'scool that we get to see you back
to back for Let's Go and thenuh Weather's in Motion City soundtracker playing that
first day with you two and gotit. Oh yeah, I love those
(09:18):
guys. Yeah, I didn't evenknow you are making my game. And
that's just the first day. Becausealso, like I said, Bush and
the Revivalist and Daughtry and ban Caminoand everybody, So everyone gets your tickets
for Let's Gofest dot com and ifyou're not around here listening, but you
can see taking Back Sunday because youguys are playing everywhere on this tour everywhere
(09:39):
and then going back again, uhtaking back Sunday dot Com for the other
shows too. Yeah, thanks forthat, absolutely, brother Adam. How
has how has the reception been withthe new album with we can still call
it new. It's only October,so we can still call one fifty two
new. Oh yeah, I meanit is very much new. I've seen
(10:00):
so much positivity with people and whatthey're saying, how are you feeling playing
those songs in the set every night? Man? There was you know,
I would, I would, Iwould put money on that. Anyone that
you talk to, they're gonna belike, if you ask them, what
are you most excited to play,They're gonna say the most recent thing that
they worked on. Yes, andthen and and like we're no different in
(10:22):
that regard. I think like areal special thing that happened with this record
was that there were there's certain songsthat I didn't even realize what I was
saying until later. And then soit's almost like there was this part of
myself that that I've tried really hardto get in touch with, and that's
the way that he showed up,you know. And and so like those
(10:45):
moments and and then like realizing orjust kind of taking all of that in
and like you're trying to understand thatto then translate it live to to where
I can involve my body and andthe and and the whole thing is almost
like Catharsis for me and then Ising on the cake is that all these
shows so afar on this tour isthat there's people singing alone, and I'm
(11:09):
like, this is amazing scenario.Like I said, I'm the luckiest guy
I know. I love that.Man. Yeah, it's just all the
videos I've seen and everyone, Imean, they're so they're so into it
with you guys, And look, you can play your old songs a million
times, but now you got thesenew things and maybe, like you were
(11:30):
saying, Adam, maybe you founda new songwriting something in yourself. Because
it was a long time between thelast album and this one too, Maybe
that seven years did you good?Yeah, man, Like we couldn't even
believe it. You know, whenwe were going in to start writing and
recording, we're looking at the calendarlike, oh my god, has it
been that long now. Granted there'sa pandemic in the middle, so we
don't count those that year, butlike, still, it's like there was
(11:52):
we couldn't believe that it had hadthat much time had passed, and there
was surely there was a lot builtup that I was not until it came
out. We found a lot aboutourselves and each other during those couple of
years, and maybe it was goodthat you guys had that time to you
know, not pressure yourselves on anew album right now, but let's focus
(12:13):
on just the band and touring andhaving fun and getting back to music.
But now we have the new albumand everything. Yeah, man, like
there's for us. I don't thinkwe would have ever taken a break like
that unless we were forced to.And then we were forced to, and
I think that was really great forall of us because also just to be
able to take a step back itand then think about like, Okay,
what does this mean to me?Like what is this represent in my life?
(12:37):
Like what am I missing now thatit's not here? And then being
actually able to like almost like tangiblelike you could grab it, you know,
like and then so now going outto play, it's look, I'm
not happy about it or or whatI'm about to say that there's like there
were times over the years to whereI know I was taking it for granted
(13:00):
it and I'm ashamed of that, like like who who? Who do I
think I am doing that? Andthen so like now I think that having
that perspective, it's just like walkingout on that stage every night, now
it's a completely different ball game, you know, Like it it flipped my
perspective of that upside down, andI'm and so in that regard, I'm
(13:22):
like very grateful for that because thatneeded to happen just for myself, you
know, in a very selfish way. And and so so now like when
we're out there, you know, like I just feel like it. And
I'll say it again, I'm like, I can't believe I'm getting to do
this like it and and it's solike it's it's cathartic for me. I
(13:43):
hope it's cathartic for the for thecrowd. I'm just so happy that just
about the whole thing. I mean, hell man, we're talking on the
phone right now. This is great. Yeah, We're talking about doing the
thing you love to do the most. That's awesome, And it's like the
only thing I really know so rightI'm wants to be doing that too.
Well. One one thousand percent,Adam, i'd uh, I want to
(14:07):
ask you two more things before Ilet you go. Number One, I
said, I had talked to Gavina couple of days ago, and I
asked him, what do you dofor yourself every day even though you're so
busy with touring and doing interviews andpressing this and that and everything else.
You gotta practice. But what doesGavin do for Gavin every day? And
he said he loves to take icebats and it re revitalizes and recharges him.
(14:31):
Now, what do you do foryourself every day? What does Adam
always make sure to do for AdamMan that ice bat thing that like him
and Steve Aoki, those guys arecrazy. Yeah, I wouldn't do it
no way. Oh well, likeI have, I have him that cryo
thing one time and I was like, okay, I tried that. I
don't think I need to do thatagain there. But for me, every
(14:54):
day I would just I try tofind a real quiet spot and just breathe
real deep and then that has reallyhelped me greatly. I've been doing it
just even at home, which Iknow it doesn't sound like much, but
it's it's It was a curious thingto me when I started trying it that
(15:16):
I was like, man, thisis something that's so simple that we don't
even think about. But if there'sjust a little bit of focused time on
it, it just does these wondersfor both your body, your brain,
the whole thing. Absolutely something forme. It's not very it's not like
the most rock and roll answer.I could probably come up with something if
you give me a minute. No, I think that's great. There's look,
(15:39):
there's so much literal noise around usall the time, or just screen
noise with I mean, I'm inthe studio right now, Adam, I
have three six, seven screens infront of me in a tiny room.
And that's just one part of mylife. Yes, I fully understand that
needing a break and needing just tohave your quiet me space. Yeah.
(16:00):
Yeah, and it and it dude, like I've I'm also found that if
it's like if I can catch itlike like earlier in the morning too,
like it just sets the day right, you know, because then because your
brain's gone, your subconscious is gone, and there's I don't know about you,
but mine has a lot, Tony, It's got a lot to talk
about. It's very chatty. Thereis so like so like that time is
(16:22):
like real good to help sort throughthat kind of stuff. You know,
absolutely, Man, you gotta yougotta make sure you and you are good
so you and everyone else can begood too. All right, last thing,
Adam, before I go, Isaw on Instagram one of your fans
had a complaint with Taking Back Sundaythat they said it's bad. It's bad.
One of your fans said they weremad about your merchandise sizes. He
(16:45):
couldn't get a hoodie small enough forhis cat. Why is taking Back Sunday
not including cats when you're putting outyour gear? Answer the question of madam.
Look, look, if you thinkfor one second that we're not thinking
about all of those naked cats outthere, than you are wrong. There
are supplied shape issues that started intwenty twenty and still haven't been resolved to
(17:06):
this day. And unfortunately that's notmy department. End of discussion, cats
are being thought of. I loveit, Adam. Hey man, I'm
glad you're having fun on this tourso far just kicked off. So everyone
please come out to the Let's GoMusic Festival see Taking Back Sunday and everybody.
And also, if you can't makeit here in the DMV area,
(17:27):
you guys are touring everywhere else.I mean there really is nowhere in this
country you guys are gone. Soyou can see all about tickets at taking
Back Sunday dot com. And Adam, I'll see you in a couple of
days. My friend this has beena lot of fun. Thank you sir.
Yeah, man, thank you somuch for taking the time. I
look forward to seeing you and everybodyelse. Let's go. It's gonna be
great. Appreciate it, brother,I'll see it soon, Adam. Thanks man,
