It's been a bit since I talked to The Unlikely Candidates! The boys called and we talked about their upcoming tour, starting with the We Rock Cancer show at Capital One Hall, the new members of the Unlikely Family, balancing the time with touring and family / regular life, making some not-so-great eating choices on the road, a bunch of new sounds are coming with the music they're working on and how much fun they had at Casa Bonita with ManBearPig!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Mike Jones.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Been far too long since I talked to my guests
that are joining us, the unlikely candidates.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Boys, Hello, what a boy? How long has it been
since we talked? Guys? It's been a while for sure.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
That's that's what we're there. Like, I think last time
we sat down with Michael's Firefly that was.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
So long ago. They don't even doesn't even exist anymore.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hopefully it comes back one day. That was a good
time for sure.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Fine, gone, am I am? I completely out of the loop.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
Yeah, dude, it's gone, like they don't handled it last year.
I don't know why. Do you know why, Mike?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
You know what they said they were taking a break
after ten years and it hasn't returned. I don't know.
They had a huge crowd when we were there. It
seemed like everything was great.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, no, yeah, And honestly, that's I always talked Firefly
up as like my favorite festival there, that one, like
everything together perfectly.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
You never know behind the scenes and all that stuff,
like it's like money stuff and ownership. It could have
been like that. I have no idea that.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, I mean, hey, that's for business people. We're just
the yack yaks that make funny things happen in music.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
And every they tell us where to go and they
pay us the big bucks and show up.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Well, hey guys, good to talk to you, and let's uh,
well let's talk about where you're going to be first off,
because next week you're kicking off your new tour. We
got a special event to start it out, uh Capital
One Hall for We Rock Cancer. Very cool that you
guys are going to be back here in DC with
welsh Ley Arms, all for a great cause. That's a
win all around for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
It is man yeah and more out there also going
to the show. Everyone's the cause is awesome. It's uh,
we Rock Cancer. They promote promote a skin cancer screenings
and everyone that's going to the show is able to
get a free uh skin cancer screen so, which is

(01:57):
kind of cool too.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
I love the fact that they're you music to help
out with a serious issue that people might not take
so serious when we're all out in the sunshine so
much all the time.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
So we rock Cancers. Definitely doing great things.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
That's really good. Yeah, I've got I've got a few
dark molds. I might have the scope out for men.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Yeah, the whole bands get looked over, and I guess
he was saying that five point thirty is a good
time for everybody to show up for streamings. Is kind
of what a good time for that was. So everybody
will see us there getting looked over, and hopefully they'll
get checked out too, and we can all have a
good show, absolutely healthy and the answer free.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Everyone listening can check out what they're doing at we
rockcancer dot org. And guys, this is the start of
the new tour here in DC. Then you're going to
Richmond Raley, Atlanta, New Orleans, and back home to Texas.
So will this be the last run for the year,
or maybe you do another one later in the fall
or something.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
We've got a few dates in October, mostly locally here
has been a little scarce. We've been working on a
lot of getting a lot of new music though, so
a lot of in the main coches.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
So we've we've had some other little candidates enter the
world this year. We have three little baby candidates. Uh
of our two guitarists and our drummers has got a
kid on the way. So like there's been a family year,
it's a building year, building an album, building families and
then next year I think probably gonna take off. We're
hoping to drop the album in spring. That's kind of

(03:33):
the plan.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Now let's talk about the babies first. Let's talk about
the new additions to the family. I was going to
ask about that. I knew about Cole, but who else?
Who else has been uh being dad?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Now we got Brent, so the guitar section is they
got some kids. And then Kevin's had a kid on
the wet so we got a little baby band popping up,
which is kind of cool.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
That's awesome, dude. Now, how has this change? Getting ready
for touring? Cause, you know, Dead Life is definitely going
to put a bit of a different twist on rock
star musician.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
We're out on the road life for the guys, I'm.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
Sure, absolutely, Yeah, we just got to be more strategic
about timing and just kind of make the rungs count
a little bit more. But we'll still be getting out
there and doing our regular like and promotion, so.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
We go full force all the time. Really, that's that's
just a game plan. We always go, go, go.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
And we're trying to have a few three or four
days off.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
We could fly home maybe and sting with the fam
in between stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I was wondering about that because I look at the
tour schedule and things. When we get into the September, October, November,
the fall months into the winter and everything, that definitely
changes the concert season up. So that's the plan, Like
hopefully you guys can maybe fly home and then be
with the family in between these shows.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Then yeah, that's that's always like a good plan to
have for us and having I don't know, I do
a lot of the strategic routings of the tour and stuff,
and I'm always kind of keeping in mind, you know, hey,
let's always like, uh, let's never overdo it, but let's
also like stay consistent. You know, two weeks on a

(05:15):
week off, two weeks on a week off, feel like
it's pretty manageable.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
And uh, when you guys are in a city and
you do have some time off, like how does that work?
Because you guys want to still practice and everything, but
you can't really cram the whole band into a hotel
room and just jam out.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
We do, like we'll set up like our laptops and
like work on stuff. Like like everything with computers is
so advanced now that you can really kind of create
your entire studio inside of computer. So like Brent will
sit down there and start doing productions. I might pop
on the mic. Everyone's kind of fiddling around. But really
most of our days truly revolve around where we're going

(05:53):
to eat that day. That's literally the off state, and
we every day on tour, it's like what.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
We'd love to indulge in, the local, the local dynasuit, whatever,
whatever's out there, what we're seeing on Instagram and TikTok,
We're stopping it. I'm saving the spaces on my map.
I'm like, hey, guys, this cheese steak looks fom we
gotta do.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
We actually, in silly, I ate cheese steaks for every meal,
which was kind of disgusting but also like amazing, Like
I had it for lunch, dinner, and then when I
woke up in the van the next day, they were
getting one at the mall and I was like, you
know whatever, I'm gonna get it. So I had three stakes.
It was disgusting and it was it was amazing.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
If you're gonna do it anywhere, Philadelphia is the spot
to do it, for sure.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
I did it hard, man, Yeah, we did it hard.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Now since we're talking about food.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Let me ask you guys then, because I saw you
were lucky enough to go to Casa Bonita in Denver.
You got to tell me about that because I was
just out there in Denver. Our friends tried to get reservations.
No ghosts, you gotta tell us about.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
It, yeah, man, So apparently. Yeah, the reservation process is
like a six month out thing. You get it takes
six months to get on. Then once you have the reservation,
you have two months to use it before it expires.
So like our friend had a reservation that he made
for a while ago. He had two months to use
and he's like, hey, do you guys want to go?

(07:20):
And we're like, yeah, absolutely, we're gonna go. And we
just rolled out of the bed and went into Casa
Benita and I had like like Jared had like bow
Lay like eleven thirty.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
It was yeah, great, it was great. Everyone had said
in the past the food was terrible. The food was
a point. It was awesome and it was good.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
All the sound park stuff and they have people diving
off of cliffs and they're like it just looks like
the most insane restaurant you could ever go to.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
It was we were like children in there for like
we I think it spent like a good like four
hours after we had our meal, so like we were in
there watching puppet shows and the Magic Show, and all
of us were like, I feel like the happiest we've
been in a really long time.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
It was funny because like at Kassavanina, they used to
have like a gorilla that went around and take pictures
with like kids and everyone. But now the gorilla is
like man bear pig. So there's families, like little kids
taking pictures with man bear pig and like they don't
know what it is, and like Brent and Core like

(08:27):
lined up behind the children to take a picture with
man bear pig like obviously like way more excited than
any of the children were. It was amazing.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
I hope one day that they know how much you
guys love it. I hope that Matt Parker and Trey
Stone can book the unlikely candidates to play a night
or maybe do a residency at Casa Bonita.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
That would be great.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
No, maybe better is if we did we changed up
all of our music to be Mariachi's style and we
went in there so cool.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
I'd be down.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
I'd be down with that'd be a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
I saw Metaalachi. I believe in it. I believe in that.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
We put it out in the world.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Now it's up for the creators of South Park to
make it happen for you guys. Hey, by the way,
talking about talking about animals. Uh, I want to congratulate
you guys on the gold record for Novacane.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
That's a big deal.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
And with that announcement on Instagram, I saw that Cole
has the drunk Penguin tattooed on his back. When are
you guys going to bring the drunk Penguin t shirts out?
We need these for the unlikely Canadates.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
This has to happen.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
Yeah, that's really smart. I didn't even think like you
just spoke into existence, Mike, because like that actually is idea.
I did not think about that that's coming out.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
I'm writing it down right now.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
You get you get the first Sure, Mike, I send
that out to you.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
I appreciate that. I'll take an XCEL, thank you very much. Uh.
Next year, we'll have to look for that dude.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
With the new album and everything else, Well, you guys
are going to be coming here. We are Capital one
Hall kicking off the new tour and we got the
special show with welsh Ley Arms, We Rock Cancer and
then Richmond, Atlanta, New Orleans. Uh, going all over the
place on this new tour. And uh, where should we
see about tickets?

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Guys?

Speaker 2 (10:13):
I guess the best place at the Unlikely Candidates on
Instagram will be the best.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
You have to hit our link on our Instagram. You
could hit we Rock Cancers Instagram. Tickets are available ticketmaster
dot com. Yeah, I'm sure you grabb them at the
Tysons Virginia Capital One Hall Web said as.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Well, Yeah, we're gonna, uh, we're gonna have some fun
with that show boys. And I'm sure next year, uh,
for everyone that's not getting to see you on this run,
you'll be doing plenty because you guys really are road
warriors for sure.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Absolutely, yes, yeah, yeah, that's the last thing.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
So you know, you just put out Panther Island was
in twenty twenty two, your first album in the whole
existence because it was all EP. So now we're gonna
do another album that's pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
Ready for it? Man? And yeah, it's gonna be nice
to get something new out and like this album was
pretty much it's it was. It's entirely done in house,
Like we've got these this big library of songs and
we're now looking for a producer. We've been talking to
a bunch of different people, like some pretty cool people.
So hopefully we'll be putting up the final touches in

(11:21):
the fall winter and then we'll have that thing ready
to go, and it's gonna be it's gonna be a
new sound like, it's gonna be a sound that nobody's
really hurt from us befoore, because it's probably felt like
the most ourselves that we've ever done. So I think
people will be pretty surprised. Some of the songs sound
like anthemic stadium rock like almost like and then some

(11:43):
of it's like summer indie kind of stuff like it's
there's a good mix of different vibes on there, but
I feel like it represents us pretty well.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
That's awesome. Wow, I can't wait to hear all of
this new stuff. Well, boys, Hey, thanks thanks for taking
a few minutes to day and we'll see guys next
weekend Capital one Haul here in DC again. You can
get your tickets for that show with Welshley Arms for
We Rock Cancer and see about Richmond, Riley, Atlanta, all
the other ones coming up back at home in Texas

(12:12):
at the unlikely candidates On Instagram is the best place
to link up for everything.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Boys. Can't wait to see you and have some fun
together soon.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Thank you guys, catch it soon, man, Thank you.
