(00:00):
It's Mike Jones. Always good tocatch up with my guest today, Gavin
Rosdale. Gavin, how are you, sir? I'm good. How are
you doing? I'm doing great, man, I'm doing great. Hey.
Thanks for taking a few minutes totalk today. I really appreciate it.
Anytime come on that one one onone. Thank sure, I thank you,
sir, Gavin. We got alot to talk about because you guys,
uh Bush, You're gonna headline nextweekend for the Let's Go Music Festival

(00:22):
and all your other shows coming up. Got the greatest hits album new music.
But first off, Gavin Rossdale,Holy crap. How has it been
thirty years for sixteen stone later thisyear? That's unreal. I know,
it's kind of crazy. I thinkthat someone's reef the mathematics and I like
to I'd like to call it,yeah, trying to make some kind of

(00:44):
like you know, there's been hasbeen, you know, it's been years
broad Oh my gosh, it's andstill though it holds up just as strong
as when it came out in ninetyfour. And I was wondering, when
you guys are making this, didyou feel competition and pressure? Because back
then, I mean so many otherbands were doing great things Nirvana of course,
Pearl Jam and Sound Garden and StungTuble Pilots, and then you know,

(01:08):
you guys are right there in thatnext wave with Weezer and Green Dan,
Garbage and everyone did. Did thatstick in your mind when you're in
the studio? Were you thinking aboutthat? Id you what I thought about?
Because a great question, you know, like when you that you know
you're that young. The ignorance isjust genius. You know, you don't
know what's going on. But allI can remember is when I was recording

(01:30):
Glistening, I had this sense.I was like, oh my god,
everyone's gonna you know, those guys, uh, they're gonna hear it.
I just thought, now I hada sudden thought that all those people you
said, that's the first wave.I thought, wow, I bet I
hope the song's are right because forthe chance those guys were here if the
record ever comes out. But Ithink it did all right for you.

(01:53):
Those those guys heard it and theywere like, all right, this band's
for real too. They're a partof this group now with us. Yeah.
Yeah, I'm not sure they werethat magnanimous. They weren't as nice
as you. They were like, hey, who's on our patch? Who
are these guys that you know what? That's fair than Gavin? I guess,
I guess there's that friendly, butyou know that competition. But of

(02:15):
course everyone wants their spot and theydon't want other people to take that.
Absolutely, it's okay. I mean, the thing is the way I see
it right, is that is thatmusic is is that music. People can
have more than one record, Sothe responsibilities is just to make the best

(02:36):
music you can, because it's amazingfor people if you've give them the opportunity
to go by four incredible bands.I mean, if you're an incredible band,
then you really are good. Whyain't gonna worry about anyone else?
We all know that. I lovethis. One of my favorite phrases,
comparison is a cease of joy.So I can enjoy any of those bands
you mentioned. Oh my god, they're all fantastic bands, and all they

(02:59):
do is spying. That's all theydid to me and you. I mean,
gosh, you guys have played withall those bands and so many more.
Now, and let me tell everyone, Gavin, next week, you
got a bunch of other friends takingback Sunday, Dashboard Confessional the revivalist for
the Let's Go Music Festival and Buss. You guys are going to be headlining
closing things out that Sunday, SoI want everyone to get your tickets at

(03:20):
Let's gofest dot com and uh,let's go. Let's there, you go,
let's go. That's right, Gavin, and we'll get back to more
music in a second. I waswondering when you do when you do a
festival, do you make time inyour day to go check out other bands
and discover who's next, who's upand coming, who you should be listening
to. That's the single best thingabout festivals, you know. When we

(03:40):
go on tour this summer, whichI want everyone to come to as well
with Jerry Cantrell, which is abig honor for us and Candlebooks, you
know that's cool. I see GerryAlat, I see Candlebooks a lot.
But going to a festival, ohmy god, last time was last summery
festivals, check it out. Iwould play Rock Ring Rock and Park.
I saw on the same stage asus, next to us, Massadol,

(04:04):
the Deaf Tones. I mean,I was, you know, going to
see Limp Biscuit. It's just Ilove all those bands, the Deaf Tones,
the incredible bands. You know,I love them so much, So
I love it. I definitely goto see all those bands that are playing
the Let's Go festival. Love it. That's awesome. I love to hear

(04:26):
that, Kevin, because I've alwayssaid to everyone, when you get a
festival ticket, a lot of peopleshow up just for the last couple of
bands. Go for all of them. You never know who the next big
superstar you're gonna see can be thatstarts out on that stage. Yeah,
for sure. And you know thebest thing about festivals is that I'm always
really funny to everyone and you know, say hi. You know, I'm
really you know what I mean. It's like it's like a community. So

(04:48):
I don't I don't sit in mytrailer and sort of, you know,
keep keep away. I'm happy tosay hi to everyone. It's my community.
And I want everyone to be goodand I want to be better than
everyone. That's not how that everyonefeels. They want to be everyone.
I want everyone wish everyone well, and then you want to be in the
band that blows everyone away. Andthat's how it should be. What else

(05:11):
are you gonna do. You're notgoing to give up that ground. You're
gonna go out swinging and want peopleto I want people to leave like going,
oh my god, why Bush ison fire? You know? And
I want them to have a greatday with those other great bands, absolutely,
like let them have their fun.But Bush is going to close the
day out and be the best ofthe day. Yeah. But my point
is that every band has something likethat when you play three in the afternoon.

(05:33):
I played three in the afternoon thing, I'm going to be incendiary.
Doesn't matter who's headlining, They've gotthe benefit of the dark or whatever like
that. But I'm gonna play atthree. I'm gonna be as wild as
I can. And I did this, And it doesn't mean in any way
they actually achieve it, by theway, but it's the best intentions,
the best attitude. You're the bestattitude, Like in that way you leave.

(05:53):
As long as I leave a festivalgiving everything I have or a show
giving everything that I have, I'mnot bothered. And there's certain bands that
I play with who I love toomuch, Like if I play with The
Death Times, I love them somuch. I prefer to see them so
I'm always going to give them thebenefit of all right, they've got it
or mative doon. You know,I'm like all right, you know,
but I love I love being strongand just doing my own thing. Everyone's

(06:17):
everyone's got their own special you know, connection with people and stuff like that.
So and again, if you're inthe audience, how brilliant You're going
to see three bands who you giveeverything they have and you love them,
and like, I hope that's whatwill happen on Sunday. Absolutely, Gavin.
When you're out and you know, you have a million things going on.

(06:38):
Bush is doing the tour this summer, you got festivals that you play,
or also with your clothing line, you're doing interviews with yuck yucks like
me. Whatever it is. Whatwhat do you have to do during your
day every day? What for GavinRossdale is a must do every day,
no matter what. Ice bas Icebas Yeah, Ice bas I'm gonna eat

(06:59):
it for it now. I playa lot of tennis, very physical,
and I've got the little an infraredspot at an infred sauna, and i
got the ice plunge because I'm anidiot and I look at I get persuaded
by Instagram the ice spar and Igot to tell you it is revolutionary.
I do three minutes, I dofifteen minutes in the sauna, then like

(07:20):
fifteen minutes up three three minutes inthe ice. Water is forty three degrees
forty two degrees and it's brutal. But I'm kind of in it now.
I can do it. I can. It's just getting through the three minutes.
And then I go sometimes twice becauseI heard twice as good, and
you just feel it just takes awayhow I should feel, takes away my

(07:43):
truth. I get that as Iget older, Gavin. Every time I
you know, I run, orI ride the exercise bike or something,
it's like I need something to helpme push through the rest of the day.
So I might try that ice baththen if you if it's Gavin Rossdale
recommended, yes, it's I don'trecommend it high enough. I've got to
get I've got a bit of aboogie on here. That's kind of got
a nice bit of wood around it. But on the road, I got

(08:07):
to be taking at like one hundreddollar like big bucket from from Amazon.
It'd be like just filling it withice and just laughter. The show just
get in it because it's it's justit's wild. He could feel like a
million dollars afterwards, and you feellike terrible jeery. I remember seeing Weezer.
Rivers from Weezer, he had likea trash can. It just said

(08:30):
Rivers ice bath and he would getin there every night from his waist down
every night to help his legs outthere. You go, look at Rivers,
Okay, okay, all right.I I you know, I haven't
seen him in such a long time, and I hope that I see him
on my travels. He's great.I love that guy. Well, Gavin
getting back to music, because wewere talking about thirty years of sixteen Stone

(08:52):
a few minutes ago. Also, you guys just put out your greatest Hits
album, and I was wondering, why was why was this the time to
do the greatest hits. Finally mymanager said to me that I should do
it because it'd be a good waybetween for the next record, which we've
just recorded. It's got a brandnew hole record. It was a nice
way to not only take care ofthat time, but also to uh celebrate

(09:20):
the last thirty years. I wasalways like running so for us, you
know, obsessed with the future. No, no, no, we got
to do this because everything knew, everything knew, everything knew that it's been
an incredible experience because you know what'shappened is that people I've seen through other
people like their enjoyment of it andlike what it means to them the last
thirty years and the soundtrack of somany people's people's lives that it's wonderful.

(09:45):
It's brilliant to have new music, and I've got brilliant, really music I'm
really excited about. But something aboutall what we've done and where we've been
in a band and the people thathave gathered in our tribe, so to
speak, it's been amazing, andit's that. You know what's weirdest is
it feels like a lot of peoplethey kind of fell in love with the
band, were the band, andthen they kind of just went away for

(10:07):
a minute, as people do.Young families, have young families, and
they take them eye off of musicfor a minute, and then they come
back, and I feel like weget a lot of people coming back to
us, you know, So wehave this brilliant thing of like the radio
and the new songs we have,So that's getting new people, so that

(10:28):
the crowd is such a cool mixtureof young people say oh, I love
those last few singles. You know, that's really cool. Who's this band?
And you got some people going,oh man, the Bush are playing
I love that. Oh what arethese new songs? And so we've got
this sort of you know what Imean, We're from both sides of generationally
where it's happening, so it feelslike an interesting time. You know,
absolutely, I remember the last timeI saw you that. You know,

(10:52):
there were folks our age there, but then also they had their kids and
there's like a couple of generations nowBush fans. Greatest hits can be a
good starting point for maybe a kidsees you guys in a couple of weeks
that let's go, or during thesummer tour they come with their parents and
hey, I really like them.I want to get more Bush here.
Yeah, yeah, for sure. And the straight up just just people hearing

(11:13):
that stuff on the radio. Youknow, we had a number one record.
You know, that's that's pretty cool, more than machines and other songs
going up nice and high. AndI think the band that I made this
record institute in two thousand and five, all D tuned, all cool,
and I noticed that when I'm playinglots of festivals with all these big bands,
I was going to all those Dtune songs, cherry picking them so

(11:37):
that I could be nice and heavyin the shows. And suddenly I was
like, when I wrote the Kingdomtwo records ago, I was like,
I'm still going to go super heavy. It's so much more fun. And
I super heavy because it's been reallyfun, and the same with the Art
of Survival, and the same witha new one that we just finished.
Now super heavy, and then it'sjust really fun. And when you put

(11:58):
those songs in amongst the classic songsthat people know, it just makes the
set really fun and interesting. Andso it's cool. That's how we're getting
the mixture of people in ages. You know, absolutely again, but I
gotta say, I love that version. Now you just said super heavy,
But you guys just did. Youjust did a version of come Down on

(12:18):
Live with Kelly and Mark with thepiano and acchoire, completely different. I
love that, man, that wasit was definitely not heavy. But I
was wondering if maybe, if maybethere's a way to do a couple bush
songs like that for an EP ora deluxe edition of the Greatest Hits,
if maybe that's something you might thinkabout. It really is. We've we've

(12:39):
been doing some fun things. We'vewe've we've made a couple of recordings for
the tour for I liked the liveshow. I wanted to come with a
couple of songs in a different way, and yeah, that was inspiring that.
It's great. Cory Corey is sotalented. He's, you know,
the bass player in the band andhe plays the amazing piano. So yeah,

(13:03):
we have that. We we we'vegot to do more of that because
it's also really nice to do that. And yeah, it's brilliant. What
of balance. You have this sortof super heavy side of the band,
and I don't want super heavy allthe time because a nightmare. I want
super heavy and then channel and superheavy. It's it's cool to kind of
make all the dynamics, you know. Yeah, and that could open up
a whole new direction with Bush.Well, we'll see what happens there.

(13:26):
When you mentioned the new album,Gavin, when do you think that might
come out next year? Probably youwant to take your time on the Greatest
Hits, right, now, yeah, I think that we might. I
think the idea was to bring outa new song for the summer, to
one of the new songs off ofthe record, and do it like that.
And I suppose I don't you know, as soon as I'm not really,
I'm not. That department is notmine. I get to make them

(13:50):
and then someone else gets to figureout the best time to bring him out.
And I've never undertood the whole singlesthing, and I think shouldn't know
that, So okay, So Ijust don't, you know, It's just
it's just it's I try to makeeverything the best I can and then like,
let the people that have to gofigure those things out for real,
they figure it out. Let thebusiness people do the business thing. Gavin.

(14:11):
The last thing I want to askyou about on the other side of
your life. I see your Instagramat eat with Gavin Rossdale all the time,
and every day you're making me sohungry with beef and eggs and pork
and chicken. What are some ofyour favorite things to make of the people
that I love really happy. That'smy favorite thing, and I find I

(14:33):
find that most inspiring thing to do. But I I really I feel really
good when I do. Like bigroasts, roast dinners, and England was
very very into our roast dinners, like roast stuff, roast meats and loads
of stuff with them. And Ilike for long sundays where you have like

(14:56):
friends and you eat and drink andtalk and hang out. So a big
roast dinner elaborate like books of puddingswhich you'd call popovers and amazing, you
know, just the right way, crunchy, crunchy potatoes. Well, all
your stuff makes me hungry. Maybeone day you can do the Gavin Rossdale
cookbook too, that needs to comeout. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

(15:16):
we're working on some stuff. Gooddefinitely one day. We'll see. We'll
see you got too many projects goingon, well, Gavin, we'll see
you in a couple of weeks forthe Let's Go Music Festival, finishing it
out. You guys are headlining bushes, headlining that Sunday and playing with Daughtry
that day, and we have Let'sSee Dashboard Confessional taking back Sunday the Revivalist,

my friend, and I'm going tosay that I love to play with Geortry.

(16:00):
Think you've got a sensational voice, crazy voice. I'm always like,
what is that voice? So powerful? Absolutely no, he doesn't get enough
credit for his voice and all thestuff he's done, and he's been around
for forever. Now you just begetsall the credits, reads and really incredible
inspiring singer. Gvin. I'll seeyou in a couple of weeks, and
