Speaker 1 (00:00):
What a day this has been, all of us coming
together with DC one on one with the American Foundation
for Suicide Prevention and our friends Judah and the Line. Guys,
thank you so much for doing this party today here
at District E.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
This means a lot to us.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Thanks so much for having us.

Speaker 4 (00:14):
We're stoked to be here and appreciate all the support
you've given us over the years.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Wow, I thank you guys for this.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
And first off, you know, with the new album The Process, Jude,
I know that it's been a whole lot of ups
and downs for you of not just your divorce, but
losing family members and everything. And the fact that you
were able to put that out there. I know as
a musician you want to tell all your stories. Those
are some heavy stories, man. The fact that you put
them out there though, that must have taken a lot,

(00:41):
and you know, really digging down deep for a lot
of these songs.

Speaker 5 (00:45):
Yeah, I think it's for us, you know, it's the
reason why we make music, you know, to be honest
about what we're going through, and hopefully that makes someone
out there listening to the record or just the one
song phill less alone and what they're going through. So again,
we hope that the honesty and the pain points people
back to actually like true light and true hope.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
And that was one of the things that I think
was so important of like you, sharing these stories is
going to help other people in their lives that you know,
and that's why we're here with the American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
People might not know that.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
There's help to be had, or they feel like I
can't talk about this, but hearing it in your music,
seeing all of us coming together, it can help people
open up and give them light in their life.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:27):
I mean, unfortunately, even for me and my story, when
I was kind of sinking to my lowest spots, you know,
your greatest ally in those moments, for whatever reason, is isolation.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
You know.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
I didn't want to reach out to even some of
my best friends and be honest about what was kind of.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Going on in my life.

Speaker 5 (01:43):
I mean, luckily I didn't struggle with like suicidal thoughts
or anything like that, but there were low moments where
you're just kind of like, I just I think that
it's gonna end.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Think can get dark though, things can really get dark.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
And you knew nothing about this that was going on
for a while and you guys are with each other
every day with the band as friends and everything, but
you probably were blindsided by some of this stuff.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, looking back, like there was a day that we
had kind of gone out to the lake and Judah
told me some of what was going on, and I
just kind of felt so much empathy for him. So
going into writing and putting this record together with Judah,
it was definitely like a vulnerable process and it felt
very rewarding for us to make this record, but it

(02:27):
was it wasn't without like the journey, and you know,
we had a lot of blood, sweat and tears put
into it to put it together, and proud of Judah
for sharing such vulnerable things. And I think I think
we worked as a team to to make it a
special thing for our fans and for anybody who hears it.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
And you know, now at this point with the band,
there's been changes over the years and everything. It's you
guys doing all the heavy lifting and everything, So of
course you want to be there for each other, not
just as bandmates, but as best friends too, because you're,
you know, like that tight. I've seen that since the
beginning for so many years. I've known you guys, it's
like a marriage. Yeah, it's a marriage. And I'm sure

(03:07):
you guys have your ups and downs too, you know,
you go through all those things.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
But speaking up marriage, well, let's talk about that.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Judah, that's you just recently did get hitched again, so
you know you had you had some problems there on
one side of marriage. But now, hey, congratulations.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Dude, thanks for putting like that.

Speaker 5 (03:25):
Yeah, it feels very like I keep telling now my
now wife, you know, seeing I was like we were
writing the divorce record, you know, quote quote unquote the
process just kind of about what it was like to
go through that big of a heartbreak and then you know,
a month later, me and her got got hitched after tour.

(03:45):
So it is kind of like one of those epiphany
moments too, where you're like, you're going back to those
moments where you thought it was all ending and then
sure enough, you know, it was just kind of restarting
for me. So and and just to encourage anyone out
there that that is going through those low ones and
says like when I did reach out or you know,
ask for help with Brian or my sister. She lives

(04:06):
in Warrenton here in town. It was always met with
like loving arms and honesty right back about whatever they
were going through and how that was intertwined with my story,
and like I they wish that I would have reached
out before all this stuff. And so I think, no
matter who you are, you have someone out there that
you can reach out to.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
And don't don't be don't be shy.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Absolutely, don't don't be shy is such an important three
words there. Don't be shy because you don't know if
the guy next to you, the girl over there, whoever's
going through what they might have the same problems as you.
Don't be shy to open up and talk about it
because your family and your friends, they're your family and
your friends for a reason, and they will be there
for you no matter what.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
Totally yeah, and like just random acts of kindness or
I've always said kind of like when you encourage somebody,
you're putting in courage. And you know, during that those
seasons in my life, I needed a lot of courage,
you know, put inside of me through my friends and
through people that I was kind of surrounding myself with.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
So you're not alone.

Speaker 5 (05:04):
Your your love, even if it's from me Brian and
Mike Jones right here.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Were there points when you're making the process because I'm
sure singing those songs, writing those lyrics it had to
be so heavy on you. Were there points where you're saying,
I don't know if I could put out this album.

Speaker 5 (05:20):
Yeah, definitely the whole thing in the studio, because I mean,
if anyone's followed along in our journey, you know, a
lot of the first records were a little bit lighthearted
and you know, more kind of upbeaten joyful, and it's
still that same undercurrent like this. The sound still kind
of sounds the same, but the lyrics have gotten way. Honest,

(05:41):
going through life, I'm kind of getting the the s
h I t knocked out of you and you know,
learning how to get back up.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
So yeah, there was a lot of those.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
Moments during PEP talks and during the process where it
was just like, I don't want to put this.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
I don't want to have to sing this every night.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Yeah, but then what are you gonna do? Put out
like two songs? You're like, uh, it's all we have
right now.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
Well, that's when you know that it means something, you know,
and it hopefully can mean something to someone else.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Absolutely, Well let's get back to your marriage then for
a second, because I did some ins the stalk and
looks like you guys had a great time with the
wedding and everything. Is it weird going in as Judah
from the band to a new family and having all
that happen And they're like, oh.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
So you're a rock star, so what's that has to
be strange?

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (06:27):
It was, it was.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
It was very It was you know, whenever you get married,
you're not expecting to ever do that again, and I
definitely wasn't, and honestly, like dating Scena in that whole process,
her family actually was very lovely, very kind of trusting.
There was a couple of honest conversations I would have,
you know, with her dad early on. Yes, like your

(06:50):
travel around you know, the US and play shows or whatever,
and you know, who the heck.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Are you type?

Speaker 2 (06:58):
But not as wild as you might think.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
I really it's like where can we get a hamburger?

Speaker 2 (07:04):
I just want somebody eat, That's all it is.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
You know, us like we keep it pretty clean. So yeah,
so after all those like little hurdles that you get through,
you know when you're dating someone, Yeah, there was I
was met. We kind of like I looked out with
great and laws.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
So yeah, well yeah, and then Brian, can we talk
about your your news that you told me earlier. I
didn't know that you became a dad for the first time,
which is pretty awesome. Uh, your little boy looking like
he's having a great time so far.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Yeah, it's been amazing. I took the fall off of
touring just to be home with the baby, and that's
been an incredible gift to be able to do that.
And yeah, we're just growing the Juda and the Lion
family a little by little over here.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
I won't do any pressure on you yet, Judah, because
it's still early. You've only what how many weeks into
the marriage, like three weeks or something like. Yeah, so
we're not going to ask that question just yet. But
there is one more question I had for you guys
that Nate, your old banjo player who still around for shows.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
When you guys see him, I know you all jammed together.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
How crazy is it that he's hiking up Mount Everest
now that that's what his life has tard to. I
saw that he's leading like trips to base camp. I'm like,
what is going on?

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Here.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Honestly, it's like, I'm surprised, but I'm not surprised. He's
just one of those guys who does random stuff like
that all the time. But I never would have expected
him to be like this crazy hiker dude.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
Yeah, I mean, nothing shocking with Nate, even him kind
of coming back and playing shows with us like that,
that's just Nate. Yeah, so we we love Nate. We
love Nate when he's playing banjo with us. We love
Nate when he's hiking Mount Everest. We love Nate when
he's buying a bunch of scooters for the boys on
the road.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
He is free spirit as free spirit could be. That dude.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I always remember when I met you guys early on,
he was quiet and then we talked about Nintendo and stuff,
and now he's hiking mountains and being a sharp bob,
Like what is happening again.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
He's probably on his way to like true light and
you know.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah, he's gonna have full zen one day. Well, we guys,
we got juded the line here at District E here
for our show with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Again, guys,
thank you so much for doing this and coming up
in the fall, We're going to see you at the
Fillmore Silver Spring and you're gonna be up in.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Philly and all over the place too.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
How we look at on the new production, the set, everything,
we we almost had that locked in for the fall tour.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
Yeah, we're actually just now kind of like finishing up
some of the thoughts. We're really excited about kind of
telling the story of the process of grief and intertwined
with healing and love and hope. And I was so
excited that this organization was part of tonight too. So yeah,
we're just really excited that to bring out the process

(09:51):
and be able to you know, come back to some
of our favorite spots like DC and Fillmore, you know,
the Fillmore Springs and were in Summer Springs. Sorry, I
was like, I'll call it the Fillmore Springs. But yeah,
we're just super excited. And again I have family here,
so every time, every time it's here, and honestly, you
guys here at DC one on one. I mean, y'all
have supported every song that we've ever brought to radio,

(10:13):
and we don't take that lightly. We're still technically an
independent band and so for you guys to support us
like we have. I really we really really feel grateful
and kind of fell at home with you, Mike.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Well, so good to be back.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
Of course, guys, of course, and hopefully when when you
come back in October we can do a little something
again then you know, see again for that that's been
a lot of fun. Well, thank you, boys, I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Thanks Mike,
