Speaker 1 (00:00):
Man. It is indeed Ravens Week, Vikings will be hosting
the Baltimore Ravens. That's a noon start, I believe on Sunday,
(00:22):
pregame show will begin at ten on the fan one
our addition to sermons nine until ten by week. So
I assume that means no go for football Sunday, just Sunday,
so you get the week off. Alex Lewis never gets
the week off. He joins us via the Connectico Water
Systems hotline.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Welcome back to the program.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I am curious to get your I believe the Ravens
last I saw were like two to three point favorites
somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Is that fair? Do you think that they are deserving of.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
That that even though we know that part of these and
they struggled was you know, their quarterback was out.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I'm still not viewing them.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Maybe I'm underrating them as a great team. Vikings just
come off a very their most impressive win of the
season thus far on the road, and they are home dogs.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Is that fair?
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah? First, thanks for having me. It's good to be back.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
I can't believe it's already this dark, and I don't
know if you've got an opinion on daylight savings and
if you do maybe, I mean, I don't know if
they're really you know, who knows. I don't want to
get anybody in trouble, but I just can't. It's unbelievable
how this happens. Anyway, To answer the much more important
question at hand, I looked actually this afternoon because I
was we were doing our preview that I do every
(01:43):
week with mister Krazinski, and I saw that the number
had jumped to I think four or four and a half.
It looked like from the stuff that I and then
maybe the gambling websites that I look at when I'm
not actually gambling, maybe they're false, But I mean, I really, Dan,
(02:04):
I do think it's fair.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I do.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Lamar's back to your point, that has I mean, when
he's been on the field for them, their offense has
been what you think the Ravens offense would be.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
They've been explosive and efficient both.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
On the ground and through the air, and then defensively
is really the most interesting aspect of that team, where
a couple of weeks ago they acquire this safety from
the Chargers Aloie Gilman, and what that allowed them to
do is move down Kyle Hamilton from the safety.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Spot to the nickel spot.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
And that's really helped their entire defense, but specifically their
run defense.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
And so they also don't have.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
A player on the injury report, which I thought was
kind of a troll, but it looks.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
To be reality.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
And so you add all that up and while yes,
everybody here is and should be riding high off of
that win, that you know, we'll see how much that
alters the direction of the Viking season. Like I think
in this league you often get so high and so
low off of every week, and you just look at
it from a team talent and trajectory perspective.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
The Ravens are.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Formidable, and anybody who isn't crediting them the way you
probably would originally credit the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
To me, that'd be a little foolish.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Do we how big an acquisition that didn't they get
an edge rusher Draymond Jones?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Is that big medium?
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Because I'm assuming I think I saw cool from Harbaugh
basically saying, yeah, he's diving in man, we're getting him
right to it. So what impact should we be concerned
about him having on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah, it's actually an interesting name. A guy who came
up for me in the spring as I talked to
a lot of the Vikings people about, you know, how
they were going to spend.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Some of the money.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
He was a name that did come up. He ultimately
signed with Tennessee. In the recent week, he's been much better.
Believe he's had some pretty good stack production in the
last few weeks. The Ravens defensive front is not gonna
scare you. I mean, their edge rushers are guys most
(04:14):
listening to the show probably have never heard of. David o'jabo,
Mike Green, you know. The interior guys have been like
a guy named John Jenkins, Travis Jones. I promise I'm
not making these names up, even though when I looked
at him, I really couldn't believe that's that's who they had.
So he definitely has more juice than a lot of
(04:35):
the names I just mentioned. How much will that change
the calculus of things.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I'm not really sure to be, to be honest with you.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
And I I think it's gonna be hard to run.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Against this team.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
And I think, obviously when you have the receiving cords
that the Vikings have attacking them through the air is
gonna be a possibility so long as the quarterback you know,
is accurate and decisive with the ball.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
So give us an update on injuries a specific I'm
most curious about Aaron Jones availability because we were kind
of reminded he can help, but he just has to
stay on the field, which of course has been an
issue as well. Where are we on key injuries and
who might be available Sunday and who probably won't.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah, he didn't practice. Aaron Jones didn't yesterday, and then
today he was out there. Saw him a little bit
in our brief viewing period, the always.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Exciting viewing period.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
He was out there stretching a little bit, and then
he was limited. On the injury report, it sounded like
it was a sprained a sea joint. Often guys tend
to be to be, especially a guy like him, like
he's gonna want to play through that. So I would
not be surprised at all if he's active on Sunday.
But yeah, I mean, the way you started the question
(05:56):
is really important to.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Me because I I mean a couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Ago when he came back against the Chargers, my editor
asked me, like, do we want to do a blurb
on this, and I, I mean, it's nothing against Aaron Jones,
but I kind of dismissed it of like, you know,
he wasn't that efficient as a runner early in the season.
How much of that was offensive line? That's an entirely
different conversation. But the way he looked on Sunday against
the Lions was like the Aaron Jones that you know
(06:24):
in Green Bay that I was electrifying.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I mean, he was.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
It was the first offensive play the game was an
eleven yard run, and then the first third down of
the game was like a checked into a screen pass
to him and he picks up the first down and
keeps that drive.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Movie.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
So I just thought he in the run game with
him specifically was so big in terms of what the
Vikings was able to we were able to do against Detroit.
And if he plays, I think that's important. How healthy,
how much is he favoring it? I mean that those
to me are important questions given just you know, cushioning
(07:00):
the quarterback as much as possible, like he obviously plays
a big role in that.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
All right, let's get a quick pause in Alec Lewis
joining us from the athletic.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
We got a lot more to ground to cover with him.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Bonus bucks, Gargie, do we have one more opportunity to
perhaps get a winner?
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Fan and two men and a junk truck would love
to help you with that. This is our national cast contest.
The final keyword of the evening is bills. Go to
Cafe inn dot com enter the keyword bills.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
All right, we are indeed back.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Alec Lewis covers the Vikings in the National Football League
for the athletic kind enough to join us via the
Kinetico Water Systems hotline. For part two, I want to
read you a text get your reaction to it. This
is from a regular texture named Saul on a Blaine.
He writes, this is big boy football. If we lose,
(07:57):
it will be Jackson running for fifty to sixty yards
mainly on third down runs to break our backs, and
the beast Henry for one hundred and twenty yards plus
with probably a couple tds. Third down defense will determine
if the Vikings win.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
What do you think?
Speaker 4 (08:13):
I don't think that's a bad take from mister sallin Blaine.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I mean he knows ball.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I guess I mean before you get to the third
down part, you know, you gotta stop Derrick Henry in
the run game. And the Vikings did a great job
defensively against the Lions rushing attacks Onnday.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
But here's the deal.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
I mean, the Ravens they play with heavy personnel. You're
gonna see two tight ends. You're gonna see three tight ends.
You're gonna see Patrick or card who I mean, I
don't know what he what the measurables are, but he
looks on film like sixty four three forty. I don't
really know, but it's really difficult. And so I mean,
I expect the Ravens to try to pluck at the
(09:00):
Vikings Interier defensive line and it's gonna be incoming upon
Javon Hargrave, Johnson, Allen, Jalen Redman and that crew to
hold up at the point of attack the way that
they did against the lines. And if they can do that, yeah,
you put yourself in third down situations. But to south
a suit point like the Ravens are one of the
best teams in third and long in the entire NFL.
(09:23):
And why it's because Lamar can make magic happen. So yeah,
can they corral them in the pocket. Can they have
the right contain from a rough perspective? And then in coverage,
can guys like Joshu Telis, can guys like Isaiah Rodgers
plaster and coverage as coaches call it like that that
(09:43):
it's gonna be an immense challenge.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I know that all the way around.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
And their offensive coordinator, Todd Munkin is one of my
favorites in the NFL, one of the most underrated in
my opinion, he was crucial in Georgia winning the national championship.
At national championships that they've one. He does a great job,
so really really tough challenge, Tougher than Detroit was by
far in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
How does the quarterback whisperer manage to maintain the JJ
McCarthy highs that we saw last week and smooth out
and sort of minimize the lows?
Speaker 2 (10:19):
What's the plan?
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Yeah, it's a great question. I mean, it's why I
was as passionate talking about Aaron Jones a minute ago
as I was like, I really do. I always felt
like for this season to go the way they wanted
to go, for JJ to develop the way that they
wanted him develop, to develop over the course of the season,
(10:43):
running the football officially on early downs was going to
be crucial because relying on JJ to operate quick game,
I'm not sure if that's the most advantageous spot to
put him in this early in his career. And so
for me, it is it's run game on early downs.
It's extension of the run game via the screens, which
(11:05):
they executed really well on Sunday against the Lions. And
then you know, when there is the drive, when there
are the drop back pass situations. For me, it's it's
are there runaways towards the sideline that make it pretty
easy for not easy, but easier for Jaj McCarthy to
decipher who's open and where and and all.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Of those things.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Like I'll say this, Dan, I have felt like when
their backs have been against the wall for the most part,
specifically this season, they have had, you know, their best
game plans offensively, the Browns game for me, that was
a great plan, and then the Lions game this past
weekend was a great plan. And if if, if, it, if,
(11:51):
if the design does not ride to a certain level
on Sunday, it's going to be difficult.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
It just it just is.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
The what's your best. I mean, I don't want to
break down too much more about the Lions game because
it is in the rear view mirror, but in terms
of the x's and o's, because I know you study
this stuff pretty closely, how do we explain the team's
ability to basically Newter Gibbs. I mean they they that's
(12:20):
as close to taking a really skilled offensive player out
of a game as I've seen in some times. So
how the hell did we do that?
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Yeah, the plan was phenomenal.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
It was like grind Floor is with the fastball that
I think, you know when when people here locally and
even nationally, and whether it's like the hipster NFL community
or people on TV like Daniel Orlowski craising grind floor
is part of the reason that is the case is
the type of kind of plan that he put together
(12:52):
for that game, and so much of.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
What they did I guess to be succinc with it
was they, I mean made.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Jamiir Gibs and the interior that Detroit Lions offensive line
have to sort through blitzers from all angles. And why
they were able to do that was because they had
Andrew van Gyekle back. And when you can drop the
edge rushers and Jonathan Gernard and are Van Geekle and
(13:21):
they are as capable in space as Andrew Van Ginkle
really is. To take away some of the short throws,
it makes Jared Golf pause. And then if you're blitzing
off ball linebackers, it's a lot for a running back
to sort through. And then, I mean, beyond crediting Brian Flores,
like I think you also really have to praise the
linebacker play, and that's Blake Cashman, who I thought was
(13:45):
had just a really really good game. And then Eric Wilson,
who has been a revelation, I mean of all of
the you know, we the staff has earned a lot
of praise over the years for like astute offseason signings
and free agency, but there is no way in heck,
I know this for a fact. Internally, they thought they
envision Eric Wilson having nineteen pressures through nine games, which
(14:09):
is the most of the entire team besides Jonathan Grenard.
He's just he's been really really good for them, and
he was really good on Sunday when they needed him
to be at his best.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Do you have a is your prediction in can you
give us a sneak peek, the fun deal you do
with Johnny every week.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Do we know who Alex Lewis is going to pick?
Speaker 4 (14:31):
I'm ter Yeah, yeah, yes, I picked the Ravens by
a touchdown, and that's not gonna curry favor, probably from
the people listening to this who are really hyped coming
off of last week.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
I just.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
I do not take this Ravens team lightly, given the
health and having Lamar Jackson and understanding what he can
do evading players in the pocket, and then I just
I really want to see if this defense can prove
it against an experienced offensive line unit that will play
(15:07):
with heavy personnel like I going into the Lions game,
and again not to belabor it, I was not that
impressed with their interior offensive line on film. And what
do I know, I'm just an amateur watching it, but
I thought that really young interior was pretty unimpressive. Not
that this Raven's interior offensive line is phenomenal, but their center,
(15:30):
Tyler Linnenbaum is pretty good and Derrick Henry.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Is just a load.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
So proving that for two weeks in a row that
they can stop the run and then limiting Lamar Jackson,
another mobile quarterback which has given them trouble, like until
they proved that to me this weekend.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
I just I'm going with the Ravens.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
You know, there's one other item I wanted to run
by you. This is not a story you're covering, so
I don't want to hit it with you cold. But
you do pay attention to things, and we have not
talked about it yet. I'm looking at the Dall Morning
News version of the story the tragic story regarding mar
mar should say Marshawn Neeland, the Dallas Cowboys defensive end,
(16:09):
and what they're reporting is that, according to authorities, he
died by suicide near the team's facility following a police
chase in Frisco. He was a twenty four years old.
I don't know if we know more details about what
I think the chase they were attempting. The authorities are
saying that they were attempting to stop a vehicle for
(16:31):
a traffic violation in the northbound lanes of the Dallas
North Tollway and the driver refused to stop. According to police,
then they lose sight at some point of the vehicle
and then Plano, Texas officers responded about eleven thirty pm
to a welfare concern at Neiland's luxury apartment complex in
(16:53):
the six thousand block of Columbus Avenue, but no one
was home and it kind of went on from there.
It sounds like a horrific story. Do we know yet
anything more about it?
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Not that I know of, and I it's I got
a text about it, uh from from somebody this morning
and it was I mean, it's it's one of those
things in my mind when I saw it, and it's not.
I mean, obviously these situations are all, you know, unique,
but like my mind just went to the Kyrie Jackson
situation and.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
How how how I felt at you know, how rattled
really after hearing that news double summers ago. But no,
I don't. I don't know any more detail than that.
I do. I mean, this guy, he he came on
a top.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Thirty visit to the Vikings before the draft. You know,
if I'm not mistaken, it was the twenty twenty four draft.
He was, like, I mean, a versatile edge rusher type player.
I actually at the Senior Bowl and MOBILE believe I
spoke to him like the February before that draft. But no,
(18:08):
don't have any more details than that. I do know
Brian Flora today and Matt Daniels, the Special Teams coordinator,
began their press conferences with just like I mean, with
condolences and pretty heartfelt words both for.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
His family and the Cowboys organization.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
But anytime I mean, and I mean we all know this,
but you see news like that flash twenty four years old.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Kid in the NFL, I mean, it just just gutted.
It's just every single time.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
So yeah, brutal the Dallas one of News.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Also, they obtained an audio recording that includes Nland's girlfriend,
who was not identified by authorities, apparently telling police that
he was armed, that neland was armed, had a history
of mental illness, and would quote end it all. And
then minutes before midnight, police said in the recording that
they were on the phone with the NFL when they
learned Neiland had already texted his family goodbye. Just it's
(19:06):
just a heartbreaking story all the way around. Troopers later
finding his vehicle damage and an abandoned on the southbound
lane lane of the Dallas North Tollway, at which point
then the police used police dogs and drones to find Neilan,
apparently dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
About one thirty am. Brutal, brutal story.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
We appreciate the time on everything as always on short
notice and we will be in touch as always.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Thanks Alec anytime, Dan, thank you, thanks for having me.
You guys have a great night you as well.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Alec Lewis covers the vikings of the National Football League
for the four I was about to say the start
tribune for the Athletic and Theathletic Dot Com as well.
We're going to try to get to some inbox stuff
if we can. There's a couple other issues we might address.
We're out at six o'clock today for Minnesota Wild Hockey
(19:59):
right here on the Fans. We talked with Russo earlier,
though Russo is not at this game. He's covering other stuff.
But the Wild back in action tonight six o'clock right
here on the flagship.
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Show RAP is presented by American Pressure commercial grade pressure
washers since nineteen seventy five.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
It's the Bumper to Bumper Show RAP.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
We go straight into a Wild Hockey at six. There's
any vikings programming today first.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
Today, because the game starts at six, we go right
into it. That's what I thought. Yeah, Carolina Carolina the opponent.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
And Russo says, a little pluck your opponent too, So
maybe you can get a little better idea that if
there's a real surge going on, we've technically won two
in a row. Correct for Boudreau and Mike Yo and
for several others as well. There's no question about that.
All right, we're gonna get to some inbox items mentioned.
(20:54):
I'll mention now that we were joined by Russo at
four If you miss it, that'll be podcastable later. Alec
Lewis joined at five o'clock as well. We kind of
got a cameo appearance from John Breen who listened happened
to be listening while I was talking about going to
the Prince Musical last night, so we gave him an
opportunity to get in some of his critique and insight.
(21:18):
He's not as optimistic as I am that the thing
can be properly tweaked enough.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
He wants more, his point being high.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Standards if it's something Prince related, even though Prince has
anything to do with this, that that's part of his
job as a critic, and the text we have are
all over the map. Some people went did not like it,
at all. Some people thought it was the best production
of all time, so it kind of ran the gamut.
As we are, we're known to see that from time
(21:47):
to time here, like everything else, apparently a very polarizing subject.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
All right, I got some inbox items. It's time for
a doctor d and sinbox.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
Every Thursday, usually for thirty You can still submit. Many
people have JG at k fa N dot com. Dear
doctor Dan, do you know a good private investigator? Do
you ever need to find someone or something and need
a PI. I'm asking because my friends and I are
(22:24):
searching for something and we have not been able to
find it. We know we need it, we like to
talk about how to find it, but we haven't come
close to actually finding it yet. So maybe someone like
Rockford or Magnum p I could track it down for us.
Maybe you've heard of it, doctor Dan. It's something called defense.
Oh C finch eighty three points second half, Yeah, forty
(22:47):
and forty three or forty three and forty.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
Eighty three points in the second half that ballgame. I
don't even know what to say. And by the way,
your guy Edwards was like minus twenty seven. Yeah, at
the time he was on the court with the worst
time at all. And I know that, you know, first
game back, blah blah blah, takes time, all that kind
of good stuff as well.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
I do not because I was at the THEATA, I
did not get to see any or all of it.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
But what is being described to me in terms of
the defensive performance is troubling. I've learned not to overreact
to any one game because we've seen this team come
out of the gate a little slow and eventually figure
some stuff out. I just I don't know, I don't
have I don't like what I'm seeing from a number
of players right now, I know, and that includes nods
by the way, I don't I don't see consistency from him.
(23:34):
I see some moments, but not so much. I feel
I feel like Julius Randall has been our most consistent player,
at least offensively, but defensively. You know, for all the
vowing and talk about this is what we've got to
you know, got to be. We're not close to being
a shutdown defensive team, and we're probably not good enough
offensively to say, well, we're just gonna hang our hat
(23:56):
on offense too. So it is the rub and you know,
some of the The analytics of it are the defense
is horrible when Rudy's out of the game, but the
defense is not very good and Rudy's in the game,
so you know, it's the old can't live with him,
can't live without him kind.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Of a thing.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
So I don't know where it goes, but I don't
and I'm willing to wait, but I don't see a
lot of stuff to grab onto. And again, I know
in the locker room players have to say what they
have to say, but when the Vincenzos, you know, does.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
The old where what was it where?
Speaker 1 (24:33):
A sometimes team? Whatever's quote was, yeah, bothers he's not wrong.
But I'm almost tired of hearing that stuff too, because
I don't even know, because it makes it sound literally
like it's all will and I'm not. I think some
of it also is, you know, do we have we
don't have all the same parts Defensively, I don't think
(24:55):
any of the young players we have in the rotation
now or that we're at least mess it well, at
least to them. Two of the three are not great
defenders at all. So part of what concerns me is, well,
can we even though we wanted to turn it on.
Is it Is it just about effort or is there
an indication here that we've got some other issues from
(25:15):
an EXUS and O standpoint. Defensively, So what the long
term answer is, I don't know. I'm hoping it's not
Jah Morant, as we talked about earlier in the show.
But that name is going to any place where there's
questions at point guard, that's going to come up, right.
You're hearing it in every market in which there's a
desire to help that position or just a desire to
bring in obviously a very explosive player.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
When he's healthy and when he's committed to the bit.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
But you're you're asking for an awful lot of faith,
good faith that the light bulb is going to go
off someplace else and at what expense. So right now
we're kind of in a holding pattern, and I guess
you just sort of wait to see if something will congeal. Right,
we'll have a stretch where you go, okay that now
they're figuring some things out, they're figuring out some roles,
because I think part of it, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Is we're not sure.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
We're not even sure among the young players who we
want to play and how often we want to play them,
and we're kind of waiting for one of the one
or two of those two emerge.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
It's kind of like.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
Nikiel was an important part because you knew that's true
what he was going to give you. He was and
we knew this. This isn't breaking any news. But they're
having a hard time finding who's going to fill the
Nikil role. I feel like because nobody's really stepped into it.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
I mean it was viewed as well, you can't bring
everybody back, and he had to be the most expendable, and.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
He was, and he got paid big money to go
to Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
But he did serve a pretty important role for them
that has not yet been fulfilled.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
He's time for doctor.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Box.
Speaker 5 (26:52):
Dear Doctor Dan. I heard you on the radio a
couple of weeks ago with my old rival G Mason.
I beat him seven out of ten times, by the way,
not sure it's a rivalry.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (27:01):
He said I'd answer his call and come on your show,
but he wouldn't do it because he wants his own
time on the radio.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Well.
Speaker 5 (27:06):
G Mason forgets since now he is in Fargo much
of the time. And can't come in studio enough that
my tenure is ad If you recall I started the
invasion of Lakeville, North, I e Madison two point zero,
had you w beat the chili out of g Mason's replacement,
Tee Brewster in football, and Hell I told coach b
Ryan to have his kids practice diving off the Williams
(27:27):
Arena floor. All this to say is I have plenty
of ties to Minnesota, and if Jay Guard ever did
get my number and called, I'd answer, especially this time
of year, because I have to continue to defend El
Fickle and the Wisconsin football team from Wisconsin fans to
anyone who will listen. Lastly, doctor Dan, I too never
got the invite to the Churchill Room at his former
(27:48):
palatial estate. We could probably just talk about that for
an hour. I'm ready to come on any time. B
Alvarez Man, b Alvarez.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Yeah, I'm still disappointed that Geon did not want to
help us out there, but there's a part of me
that hopes see I think what we should now do
is if you gather any momentum to actually get him
out getting him on the show, I now think we
should purposefully not have him on with Mace.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Now, the rub might be that's.
Speaker 1 (28:21):
The only possible way we get him in the first place,
where he says, why do I want to be on
with this jamoke from Minneapolis?
Speaker 2 (28:27):
What do I care?
Speaker 1 (28:28):
So? I don't know how that follows. By the way,
you got a pen. I do write down these numbers, Okay,
hang on, got paper? Fourteen, ten, ten, zero, zero and seven. Okay,
Barry Alvarez's favorite football program, Wisconsin Badgers point totals starting
(28:55):
with the thirty eight to fourteen loss to Alabama.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
That's that's not very good. They announced today. The athletic
director announced today Luke Fickel will be back for year four.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
I think you kind of got to, don't you. I
agree totally.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
I know you got to give them one more shot
at finding a QB, don't you. Yes, Unless I'm not
saying that's all the problem. But that's a big part
of it, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
It's been for multiple years, they've had quarterback issues, injuries.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
I think you got to give them one more I
know it's it's ugly. I mean, there's no defending it.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
I get it.
Speaker 5 (29:27):
It's hard, especially there, and they don't have toldless money.
I think his buyout's thirty million something like that. Twenty
to thirty million.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
They're not They're not a procrast rich right now. Well,
they they've never really been there.
Speaker 5 (29:39):
Even when Barry was there, they didn't they didn't always
spend on assistance. That's part of the reason why Bielama left. Yeah,
facility like Barry kind of built it. They went all
in with his stuff, got it rolling and then but
they they haven't gone crazy in the arms race like
some other places, and now they're paying for it a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
You when you screw up.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
So did you see the quote from the ad boy,
he speaks the language. Chancellor and I are aligned. Are
aligned on significantly elevating investment in our program. Yeah, to
compete the highest level, more money for players.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Aligned.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
We're willing to make an investment in infrastructure and staff.
So we see how that how that goes. They only
lost to Oregon by fourteen. They played really well at Oregon.
I wonder if that means Oregon is not quite as
great as we thought, which opens the door maybe to
Iowa beating them or just Wisconsin, as you mentioned, does
have a decent defense. The defense has been consistent all
(30:34):
the year, pretty solid pretty salty and hasn't had a
ton to work with with the offense, as you mentioned, Sorry.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
What's next?
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Box?
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Due, Doctor Dan?
Speaker 5 (30:51):
There are so many ways to express ourselves, perhaps too many.
We often use words, sometimes music, how about body language
or facial depressions? And it has been said that a
picture is worth a thousand words. But doctor Dan, what
if we just simplified things for everyone? What if we
did away with these more antiquated methods of communication and
instead just use some random numbers. And if you feel
(31:14):
like we are living in an n bargetzi snls get
about numbers, you may be correct. Oh well, six, seven, sincerely,
your favorite quarterback's alter ego?
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Nine? What you had to pick this one?
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Didn't?
Speaker 2 (31:25):
It's a good one, is very well written. Is well written?
That's from nine? That is from nine. Do I abbreviate nine?
I don't think I can. You need two words? It's nine?
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Yeah, it'd have to be nine. That's the way it'll
have to be. I guess n nine for number nine.
I'm trying to Doctor's trying to remember the number of
Minnesota based professional athletes who have referred to themselves either
third person or as another entity Herschel did it for sure. Yeah,
(31:59):
Hershel you to refer to himself in the third person
back in the day. But I'll be honest, I don't
remember many other athletes that have done that.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
Now.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
This is a variation on that a little bit. It's
based on the number. And like I said, I.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
I'd just like to see this thing play out a
little bit before. Now he's saying it, so you have
to quote him. I don't know if he was prompted
into it, but I blame the Jackals a little bit.
I should have asked Alec about.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
This, that they lose themselves in JJ McCarthy's eyes, though
they have about the process all his stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Yes, they've lost it.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
There's too much about that and it's making it easy.
And in his mind, I'm sure he's saying, well, I'm
just trying to cooperate. I'm trying to give you angles.
I'm not trying to be full of myself. I'm not
trying to turn myself into a legend before I have
been one. But it's all part of it. I mean,
what was the big bit last week before the game,
A shot by the way that would not have been
shown if the Vikings had lost, and he had struggled.
(33:00):
When he's on the on the bench by himself, no
one else around him, contemplating, genuflecting, meditating, meditating, Yeah, whatever
it is.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
It's like, Okay, that's that's great, that's wonderful.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
But doctor Dan would just like to see us get
a little further along on this process before we anoint
and we turn a flesh and blood quarterback into this
sort of larger than life, unprecedented quarterback character. I just,
(33:32):
like I said, I I've been around too many great
quarterbacks who I really do believe would roll their eyes
at some of this stuff and say, let's go play, kid,
Let's come on, man, just go play, and we get it.
You gotta be a little different when you're on the
field because the field's insane. There's there's nothing civilized about
the whole deal. But I just I don't I'm not
convinced that that makes him all that unique uh much,
(33:56):
you know, compared to lots of other people.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
But we'll see.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Maybe I'll look back on it. This is the beginning,
in the beginning, and I'll say, you know that this
was uniquely him because.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
I don't remember.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Any legendary quarterback referring to himself as a number. I
don't now, maybe I'm wrong. Did Barber call himself remember four? No,
everybody else did though, exactly. Yeah, that's the beauty. Yeah,
they did it for him. He didn't have to do
it right.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
If you recall, doctor Dan and Jay Guard are aligned
and giving yourself a nickname, and that was part of
my problem with Jay McKinnon, Jeric McKinnon back in the day.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Oh yeah, yeah, everyone wanted to call him Jet, and
I'm like why he said, Well, that's what he said.
His nickname is. You can't do that. That doesn't work
that way. And also he's got to play better.
Speaker 5 (34:39):
And then of course he goes to the chief and
he was valuable, valuable, he was helpful, helpful.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Well, of course that helps. Everybody's helpful. If you mahomes
is your quarter.
Speaker 5 (34:48):
Correct, It's kind of like the Andrew Wiggins going to
Golden State. Yeah, that's what he's and you got t
Kelsey and all that. Like, did Brady ever refer to him?
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Was he twelve? He was ever call himself twelve? I
don't think so. I don't think so. The Michigan guy too,
I just I'd wait a little while on.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Not did we find any stories did he refer to
himself at as nine at University of Michigan. I haven't looked,
but maybe somebody will find it. Probably no question. Why
wouldn't he have FAC's.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Boss, Dear doctor Dan, We're ready to inform you that,
in honor of his twenty minutes reminiscent about our rich
history in great detail on one hundred thousand watt major
market primetime radio, your show sparks only by your question
about his favorite number. We are proud to announce that
(35:40):
we are inducting m Russo into our hollowed Hall of Fame.
In addition, we have petitioned the Canadian government to give
him full citizenship.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
Sincerely, m expos Well, what we learned earlier, if you
weren't listening to the program, is that Russo Radio grew
up being a huge Montreal Expos fan and who the
player wallet Tim Walla wall He basically, I mean it
sounds like obsessed.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
He wouldn't leave Tim Wallack alone.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
There's such a point that, like six years between meetings,
when he tried to reintroduce himself and tell a story,
Wallack says, yeah, I remember you telling me that story
six years ago.
Speaker 5 (36:19):
That's so good, which is too good. It's okay to
be a roobe sometimes it is, and that's it.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
That's the beauty of it. And it's it's kind of random.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Although he kind of explained why was the uh the
Montreal Expos even you know, pined about the possibility that
they might never have left at all, you know, from
back in the day. But alas history marched on, you
are you're probably too old to remember. Lagra or wrongs right,
Rusty Stop that was the nickname. Remember him, big left
(36:49):
handed slugger, played first base, strapping. He he was he
I want to say he was at least six four
sixt five, huge guy h and a very good slugger.
He also had some very successful times as I recall
it with the New York Mets as well, Rusty Stobb
as the first guy think of from Montreal Expos.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
We are out in ninety seconds. So that will conclude
Doctor Dan's inbox. Brady called himself TB twelve. Oh, he
has a company trademarked it.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Yeah, he sells products and a when trademark that probably
after Super Bowl five that he had.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
That's that's what you're asking, Uh, did you name Larry Mondello?
Guy thinks he's got you in a box?
Speaker 1 (37:36):
So did you not name yourself the Tasteless box of
mashed potatoes aka T Bomb?
Speaker 5 (37:42):
No, Unfortunately I did not give myself that nickname. I'm
not sure I would have picked that one. I wouldn't
have been at the top. It was a texter to
that very same inbox or an email on Bryant Cafe
and text line.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Those are the days, there's no question about that. All right.
Speaker 1 (37:56):
We are out early today for Minnesota while hockey. Where
are we playing Carolina?
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Carolina? Carolina? I'm sure Carolina on my on my mind
in the open? Is he that trite?
Speaker 3 (38:08):
Yeah? He is.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
Seriously, he had a really good ques the anniversary. Are
we running out of people to bring back for the anniversary?
Speaker 5 (38:15):
But I would argue we are already out. No disrespect
to Stefan Veyue, no no shade, no shade to yuh.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
You might be right.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
Tomorrow's Friday, so it'll be the Friday Football Beast on
the fan. Any shot at getting bonus Salisbury or.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
I did throw that out? Too many texted me earlier.
I have not heard back. That's fair enough.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
The regulars Gerby, Ben Gestling and Lavelle e Neil the third,
Thanks for watching, thanks for listening.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
We'll talk to you tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Three
