Speaker 3 (00:17):
Somebody's sign me the Carolina Panthers, who we were alluding
to in that segment with Ben Gesling, actually have a
better record than the Purple I'll have to double check that.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
Pretty sure they do, aren't they five and four? That
would mean a better record.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
You're right, Wow, I gotta stop disparaging and just assuming
that the Carolina Panthers are bad this year because they've
been bad other years. Five and four, Yeah, that's better
than not five and five. Five and five, that's bad. Okay,
so they well they played one more game, correct, but
that's still a better record. And we're sitting there at
we're at four and five right now? Correct? That is correct?
All right? A mini top five at five and again,
(00:53):
I guess we shouldn't be surprised. But there's more Minnesota
Wild injury news. Time now for.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
The obligatory Kevin Fallness Minnesota Wild mention.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Who is it now.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Well, this particular person is officially on the injured reserve
as of an hour ago. It's week to week with
a lower body injury. It's one of my favorite Sparco Rossi,
So that changes everything. As far as I start calling
them Rossi again or something, I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, I can't. I can't either. I'm Spanish. That's what's embarrassing.
My daughter can't. I can't.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, I don't know how to do anyway, whatever, I
know what happened to a lower body the lower body
injury sure list is how long do you know? On
the top of my head, I don't know. But it's
a week to week. Doesn't look good, and man, it's amazing.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It's well, we were just talking about injuries. Everybody has them,
but I do feel like in hockey we have them
more than most teams. Do we or is just a nature?
I think it's just the nature that I think it is.
I think it's also we probably can't afford them as
much as some teams. Well, that's the real kick. That's
the thing. If we have more depth, it would not matter.
So we got a Mattene game tomorrow. It's it's simpling
(02:03):
right Tomorrow night, five o'clock. That's correct.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, And here's the lines in case you're wonder because
Rossi was the top one. So Hartman gets vaulted up
to the first line with Caprice, Avin Zucarello, Eck center's
the second line with Bowldy and Johansson. My guy, because
I always champion the young players. Danila Yurovs centering whoa,
Tara Senko and Hennestroza. So not a bad little opportunity
scored yet I want to say he has at least once,
(02:27):
maybe twice, Okay, and then people who haven't scored yet,
Ben Jones centering the fourth line with Felino and Trendon,
so opportunity. And then Zeev gets put back on the
top power play unit as well. The other news coming
out of today.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
And how do we feel about because we talked to
Russo about this yesterday. The analytics say, obviously it's it's
hard to not get excited about his offense, but that
his plus minus is not very impressive if we believe
the significance of plus minus in hockey, which I think
was the first sport that really accentuated the plus minus
(03:00):
and the others kind of copied it later So what's
the end and the hang of it or do you
have to sort of live with that until he figures
some stuff out on the defensive side of being a defenseman.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
For Zev, yes, I think you just have to live
with it. And I agree because he again, this is
what other teams do. We're seeing it all across the NHL.
You're seeing it with the Sharks and the Blackhawks. And
I understand, what would you rather trade places with them? Yeah,
I'll tell you what. They're on a better trajectory right now.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
That's the problem.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
So they could pass us at any point in time.
So you take your lumps now, you build them in
the NHL and you go forward. So I would just
roll with it. And Zev, I mean, he's got the potential.
The sky's the limit.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yes, no question about that. Wolves. They play tonight.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
It is an NBA Cup game against the Kings at home,
seven o'clock. It's on the Timberwolves app thanks to Gophers
kicking off on a Friday in Oregon. So Kings Timberwolves
target center.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Your thoughts. Kings are a mess right now. There's there's
talk that they're ready to, you know, basically gut the team.
If they can make a deal for let's say a
job Morant. That's the kind of team that probably where
it probably makes more sense to roll the dice on
a volatile personality like Jaw because you've got nothing to lose.
(04:17):
You know, when you got nothing to lose, you say, well,
it'll either be feast or famine. It'll either be the
best movie ever made and will energize the program, or
it'll be a disaster. And how's that any different than
what we are right now? The Wolves have done a
good job in this stretch of taking care of crappy teams.
I'm not going to belittle that in this case because
they've had a tendency to play down to those teams,
(04:39):
so that has value. I think we're going to learn
a lot more about them tomorrow night against the Denver Nuggets,
and more on that coming up after the top five
of five. There's a lot of interesting tentacles to that
story and even a broader discussion about the current condition
in the Western Conference. So Edwards has come back yet
that one crappy game back I think it was against
the Knicks off the injury. Speaking plus minus, he's like
(05:02):
minus twenty eight or something since then he's been really,
really good. He's really been locked in. He's the guy,
frankly who's handling the ball more than anybody. And I
still like the way Randall is playing. I think offensively,
they look really really good right now. The question is,
as the competition gets ratcheted up, what do you show
there so we'll get a better handle in the next
(05:24):
couple of weeks because we're gonna start playing some better
teams NBA Cup again, I don't mind it. I think
do we have the same green court? We had a
green court for our first game that was very green.
I don't know what he's like extremely green. I'm not
a stickler of the court's got to be, you know,
they can't be really conservative and all that hardwood, but
(05:46):
that one didn't particularly excite me. But maybe we could.
I think we're one to oh in in our division
and the Cup standings. I'm not mistaken. I think we're
one to zero. So we're in a position to obviously
continue to give ourselves a chance to h to compete
for the Cup. I want to say, it's the Prince Game,
so purple court. Oh, you're right, the green was the
(06:07):
last one?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Maybe?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, Okay, maybe that's. Oh no, isn't the Purple court
Tomorrow night? Oh it is. I think tomorrow night. Yeah,
that's that's the non dam r Night's not an NBA
Cup game, I don't think. But you're right though, I
think Tomorrow night's the purple You gotta have different see
that's how it is. In two thousand, the streams not enough. Yes,
you gotta have the bells and apparently you got to
have the whistles as well. You're one hundred percent right.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Keyword deposit Lavelle in about fifteen minutes, couple thoughts on
the rich getting richer. That's next Leavelle coming up in
about ten or fifteen minutes, and then, as I mentioned,
(07:01):
we're out at six o'clock today for Gopher Football Saturday
on a Friday night. The pregame show will start at
six o'clock on the flagship FM one hundred point three
The Fan I'm sure available via the iHeartRadio app as well. Gophers.
What was the spread last I saw, it was like
twenty seven or twenty eight points, something along those lines.
(07:22):
The Ducks favored. I'll double check the latest lines, if
you would. Brett blakemore all the action tonight on the fan.
Oh you know, I forgot? What am I talking about?
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Guardsy? I'm the idiot. It's Guardsy time. How could I
forget the producer of the show. Well, according to Gerbishmid,
it's easy. He accused you of not wanting to be
a part of the show anymore.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Your thoughts, well, after you just forgotten me, Maybe I
should see it that way.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Well, it's out of side, out of mind.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Maybe, you know, maybe I should feel that way. I
don't know. Maybe I'll have to think about it.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
It's a very good point.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
You'll have to think about it.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Well, he didn't have, you know, Usually what the producer
supposed to do is on the sheet. Here go guards
e line eight or whatever or not in this case,
line eight, but somewhere so and you know how my
mind works, I'm racing ahead.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
I'm so in love with Joker right now. I'm willing to.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Like forget about everything else to get more Joker stats
in because that get this guy. That's what we got.
Of course, as you know, Saturday night and Denver's nine
to two man and he's playing how many times have
you won the MVP? I mean he's playing at an
above MVP level right now. I mean he's shooting the
number I had yesterday was in his last ten games alone.
(08:38):
From the field. He's shooting seventy three percent. I mean,
it's crazy, it's just nuts.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
But he's never seen the Prince Court. He's never had
a Prince court, which is he's going to play on tomorrow.
What's the tomorrow with the Prince Court?
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Any rain tonight in uh Corvat No, not kravallis Oregon State.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
I always want to say Cravallas or someer Eugene.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
No.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
It was in the forecast all week and it was
actually supposed to rain today. Kind of while you and
I were doing enough said when I was standing outside, Yeah, rain,
then it always looks like it's going to That's what
I've learned. It always kind of feels like it's going
to but nothing. I was just talking with someone in
the press box and they said, I think we're going
to get lucky tonight with no rain, which which is
good obviously, which is preferred for the sideline reporter. But
(09:22):
it's been nice. It's been good weather out here. It's
been cool. It's a little cloudy, it's a little cool
right now, but it's a nice day up here.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Is this the first game you've covered at that stadium?
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yeah, I've never been to Eugene.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
People so talk about it as a top five you know,
home field advantage stadium?
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (09:41):
I mean I saw obviously Indiana play there and win,
find a way to win against Oregon, and it looked
certainly very hostile, looked like it was very enthusiastic. Is
that legit? Is it rightly called top five when it
comes to opposing difficult, opposing places to play in college football?
Right now?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
I would let you know after the game. Yew, how
I took it. But everybody's told me the environment is unbelievable.
And what's interesting about it is there's only fifty four
thousand seats. It's really probably the same size as Huntington
Bank Stadium, but people say that it feels like a
lot more. And they've had twelve unbeaten seasons in this
stadium at home, and obviously they're not going to do
(10:22):
that this year because Indiana came out here earlier in
the year the Hoosiers and beat them. But I do
think it's really I think it's really loud. It doesn't
feel that imposing. I'm just kind of staring out over
it now. It's just kind of a run of the mill,
average college football stadium, like a lot of these kind
of look. But they say it it's really loud in here,
and the numbers speak for themselves. They've had good teams
obviously forever, so that's part of it. But I've heard
(10:44):
it's really really loud, so I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
All right, So what are you hearing on? I mean, Oregon.
When I've seen them, I think they're obviously very good.
I don't think I've come away from several games thinking like,
my god, they're Ohio State or they're on stoppable. But
it does strike me, at least in terms of stats,
that one of their strengths is they're very balanced. In
other words, they're a very they may not be a
(11:08):
great offensive team, they're very good offensive team. They may
not be a great defensive team, but they're a very
good defensive team. That it's the balance that is uh,
what is what makes them so effective?
Speaker 1 (11:20):
I think for people too that are just checking in
on Oregon for the first time, you assume it's going
to be like the Chip Kelly Oregon where they're just
all about yeah, trick place right, crazy offensive schemes and
going up and down the field in nine seconds. They
are not like that at all. Dan Lanning's like a
defensive guy by trade. He was the coordinator at Georgia
before he got the job up here. And what I
(11:41):
don't think people understand is how physical they are. And
just look at the Iowa game a week ago where
they basically out Iowa Iowa in Iowa City and ran
the ball for two hundred and fifty yards. They've had
three games with over two hundred yards rushing this year.
And it's not because guys are breaking eighty yard runs
just because they're faster than them. They are super, super
physical And I'll be curious what they do tonight offensively
(12:03):
because they're completely battered in the wide receiver. Yeah, they
didn't play last week, and we don't know what they're
going to play this week, but there was a reporter
earlier today that they're not expected to play, So I
think you're going to see them probably try to do
the same recipe as they did a week ago and
just run, run, run, run, run at a place where
(12:24):
the Gophers have kind of been in stopping this season.
So that would be my guess is how they play it.
But and then when they need to throw, they threw.
And Dante more is, you know, a really good quarterback
and a former five star guy, but they're not slinging
it around fifty times. It's not like that at all.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Well, what you just the answer just gave might render
my next question moved, but I'm going to ask it anyway,
because what I thought happened in the second half of
the Indiana Oregon game there especially was the Indiana line
of scrimmage, especially defensively, had Oregon flummoxed the QB. This
(13:01):
five star QB looked very mortal, especially the second half.
They did almost nothing in the second half. They got
great pressure on him. Are we capable of getting some
pressure or is it even a game where we're gonna
say we're loading up, We're gonna start sending people worst
case scenario as we get burned. But what do we
have to lose.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Exactly? And the golfers. Actually, if they don't leave the
big ten and sacks, they're right up there in sacks.
It's crazy that their defense a lot of times either
sacks a quarterback or gives up a big play. They've
been prettier, and you're right about the Indiana game. That
was probably more his worst game. He was sacked six
times there in that game and that clearly got to
(13:41):
him and reading some things this week, that was probably
his worst game. And they have a young offensive line.
That's what's interesting there. I think starting four freshmen on
the offensive line that was earlier in the season. I
think they struggled a little bit and have found their
form here. And obviously Indiana is probably the best team
that they've played, so credit to them too. But I
think they've on their forum here in the last month
(14:01):
or so and these young offensive linemen are playing super well.
But yeah, to answer your question, I would expect that
the Gophers do try to get super aggressive when he
drops back to pass, because he can't even with them
the wide receivers being you know, down to six, seven,
eight nine in their room. You got it. You can't
just let him sit back there.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Who's going to be our number one running back tonight.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
I think they'll I think Darius is going to give
it a shot, is what I keep hearing. I think
Darius is going to be back, and if it's not him,
then it's then it's family Ega Boy, the red shirt freshman.
But I had heard this week that there was some
good indications Burnsey was there were some good indications that
he was healthy enough to play, and he's obviously there
(14:44):
by far and away. They're number one, probably offensive option
besides Drake Lindsay. So hopefully it's Darius, but if not,
it'll be Boy.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
What do we think of our receivers this season?
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Not great, not great, sporadic, inconsistent. Jalen Smith, the freshman
from Mancato, started the season really strong. He dealt with
an injury. He hasn't really done much since then. Lamechy Brockington,
the senior, has probably been their best one. He's the
one that caught the critical passes last week or two
weeks ago, the third down passes who Drake was going
(15:19):
to when they got the pass interference in overtime. Jamon
Tracy's been okay, it's kind of up and down, but
if you look at the pro football focus numbers, which
you know, I love, ye, They're not good on fifty
to fifty balls, are not good in contested catches, and
they have to deal with a lot of them, which
means that they're not getting separations. So that's I think
the biggest thing moving forward is they have to probably
(15:41):
upgrade that position, especially if you're an ack like Drake
who wants to throw it a lot. But I just
think they've been okay. I think Lamechy's been good. I
think Jalen Smith is a young guy's been okay. I
think at times Tracy's been okay but probably not good enough.
Their tight ends have been pretty good. That's why you've
seen Drake go there a lot. But I think it's
just just an average group that has had, you know,
(16:03):
some good moments.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Does Oregon. Does Oregon remain close to a lock for
the posts for the National Championship Tournament or not so much.
I've I've kind of lost track of that.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Well, they ranked eight, I think going into the night. Yes,
and you look at they've got you know, USC next week,
which is a big game. USC has Iowa this weekend
at home, yep, exactly, and at Washington. You know, their
big rival who has put together a nice season two.
So if they went out, they would they would be
a lock. If they had another loss, then things might
get a little bit interesting. But and they're also everybody's
(16:38):
used to them being good, right, so they're going to
get the benefit of the doubt in a lot of cases,
even if even if they were to drop another game.
But yeah, they're in a really good spot. They were
the number one overall team a year ago, if you remember,
in Ohio State beat them, and now they're right back
in that mix.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Give me a can you give me a tease for
the pregame show? Any big you know juicy interviews you
can you can reference or prepares for it.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
It's pretty standard. It's I'd love to give you something electric.
It's a pretty standard previews show today. I'll have Burnsy
for a couple.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
I think his.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Flight made it in he was flying out tomorrow. It's
an awesome setting. I'm looking at some type of mountains
or hills and pine trees for forever. It's just it's
a cool setting, but nothing too crazy, nothing too as
we say, standard go for football pregame show coming up
in the sea.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Well, you had a beautiful background. You mentioned the Enough
Said show we do on Fox nine. You were already
obviously already out there. So you found a beautiful backdrop
facing a river, beautiful greenery. It looked like there was
like a walking slash running path right behind it. It
looked it looked very idyllic. I mean, it was very
(17:45):
peaceful looking. And there's still some leaves on the trees,
which of course they're pretty much all here, you know.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Yeah, exactly, and it has it's not too cold, it's
a chill. Yeah, it's a cool spot. It's a really cool.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
By the way, Enough said tonight will run in the
middle of the night or early tomorrow morning, because Fox
nine also has Gophers Oregon, as does the Fan But
Lloyd Fisher reminds me that the show is already up
and available now via the Fox Local app, which is
every bit as free as the iHeartRadio app, so we
(18:23):
hardly recommend that folks download both if they do not
have them already. I'll leave you with this question. This
is from a Texter. What's worse Koc forgetting about the
run game or Dan forgetting about JG. That's that's true.
I might be boxed there. I mean, I know. I
(18:45):
it went to my head a little bit that I
wanted to talk about Joker and like Guardsy, Guardsy, who
you know? So I guess now I got to look
in the mirror a little bit and apologize to KOC.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
And I'd argue that I'm more established than the Vikings run,
so like you shouldn't forget it out, Like that's true.
That that's what. I don't know if Gerby would argue that,
though he.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Would and he did. Unfortunately, have a great sideline call
tonight and we save travels back and we'll talk next week.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Thanks man Guardsy from Eugene, Oregon. Gophers Oregon pregame show
in about thirty when we come back Lavelle e Neil
the third, we'll have him size up Bears Vikings. That's next.
It's the Bumper to Bumper Show rap brought to you
(19:35):
by American Pressure. All Right, you're hearing the enough said
end of the show. Towards the end of the show
music because of Gopher football is coming up. Pregame show
will begin at the top of the six o'clock hour,
so it's an eight o'clock start Central time tonight. The
game because it is in the Pacific Northwest Lavelle e Neil.
(20:01):
The third is with us now via the Connectico well
Water Systems Hotline. What are your You have a lot
of sources throughout the Windy City, and you have a
lot of sources here. What are you hearing regarding the
Bears fan influence that we might expect at the People
(20:24):
Stadium downtown Minneapolis on Sunday at noon.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
So I know for sure that that there's some local,
you know, Twin Cities Bear fans who have got tickets
to the game, and they will definitely be there in Chicago,
pretty decent traveling fan base regards how good or bad
they're doing. So I would imagine that they're either flying
or they're driving in Uh, there'll be a handful of
thousands Bears fans, I would imagine in the Peoples stated.
(20:50):
I don't think they're going to take it over by
any sense of the imagination.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
But there was a very.
Speaker 5 (20:55):
Healthy Bears contingent in Las Vegas when they traveled there
to play the Right on September twenty eighth.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
That's right, you're there for that.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Yeah, I'm not expecting it to be half Bears fans
on Sunday at the bank, But I think you will
see in probably here contingent of Bears fans in the
crowd cheering or booing their favorite team.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Yeah. Well, it's more likely, isn't it. When the team
is doing better. You know that Bears fans haven't had
much to crow about, and so whether they've played against
bad teams or not, if you're sitting at six and
three and have a chance to lord it over on
the road and enjoy yourself a little bit, it's been
a while since Bears fans have been in that particular position.
(21:37):
For sure, you and I talked about them. I think
as recently as a week ago. I think both said
I'm not sure I'm buying what they're selling. The question
at some point is, even if you know the schedule
has been pretty thin to this point that if you
keep winning and you keep finding ways to come back
the way they have, does it indicate that something is
(21:57):
starting to change there? And how much impact does that
have on how you know things might go and how
difficult a game this might be for the Purple on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
Well, I think that things have changed a little bit,
and that has not come all the way over to
where you want it, but there is something to be
said about not losing games you should win. I think
Chicago fans are still, you know, aching over how Week
one turned out, since they left for the majority of
the game and then you know, Number nine popped out
in the fourth quarter and led the Vikings to glory.
(22:27):
Probably a little bummed out about that. But since then
they've had they'll be able to hold off the Raiders,
come back against the Bengals, and come back again, you know,
last week. So I think that's encouraged. Those are encouraging
things because a year ago, Caleb was bringing the Bears
down the field in the fourth quarter and they still
(22:48):
were winning games. You know, they brought them down the
field and Thanksgiving against the Lions, and then Matt Evers
screwed it up. He brought him down the field twice
in the fourth quarter in Washington, but the Tree Stevenson
decided that with fans. I believe a Bear scored fifteen
points in like forty five seconds against the Vikings at
Soldier Field, ended up losing that game. There's a game
(23:10):
against Green Bay Caleb brought him in brains of its
game sign and field goal they got blocked. So the
difference between this year and last year is that some
of these fourth quarter comebacks are paying off with w's.
So it's kind of changing, you know, attitude about the team. So, yeah,
would you like to see a signature win? I certainly
would like to see a signature win. But there's also
(23:32):
something to be said about taking advantage of the opportunity
of that your schedule prevents present you. Yeah, and that
the Bears have done the last few weeks.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
If you analyze the current condition of the Vikings and
you look to their schedule, which I think includes after
this game, a two game road trip to Green Bay
and to Seattle, aren't we pretty close to must win
category for the Purple On Sunday? You lose to the Bears,
you fall through three games behind the Bears, hardly the
(24:02):
best team in the division, and you go you lose
another home game. You go two games under five hundred
with two challenging games on the road. I mean, you're
if you want to, you know, insimulate yourself into the
notion that there's still a team that can get in
the playoff scrum, the playoff mix. You have to win
on Sunday, don't you?
Speaker 5 (24:21):
I think this is the must wing game for the Vikings,
especially coming up to what happened, you know, last week,
and look at what's going on the next two weeks,
about the trips to the Green Bay and Seattle. So
I think they need this win on Sunday like they
need air to breathe, you know. And you could say
that there's been a lot of injuries and we're dealing
with dups and downs of a young quarterback. But your record,
(24:44):
you are what your record is, you know, and right
now it's the last place record in the division. They
need to start stacking wins now. The Bear schedule gets tougher,
no doubt, no doubt. And I'm cringing at the last
five games because it goes Packers, Browns, Packers forty nine Ers, Lions,
and that's a gauntlet, that is except for the Browns,
(25:05):
that is a gauntlet. And you know, we got we
got some barious fans taking they have a chance to
make the playoffs. I'm so skeptical that I think there's
a little too few holes on this too many holes
in this team to say they're ready to do that.
They need to Marcusistant passed Russia. The secondary needs to
be stronger, although I was I raised an eyebrow to them.
When the injury report came out.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Dan Jalen Johnson's made an.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
Appearance on the injury report as questionable after not even
being mentioned for the last several weeks, so apparently he's
making progress from his growing string. I wonder if that's
a numb friend would be on the field or not.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
That's a great question. In fact, I talked with Ben
about that. He still thought it was a long shot
that he would play, but questionable is an interesting designation
that certainly seems to open the door to the possibility.
I you know, I don't know. The bad news for
the Vikings, of course, is Grenard is out and the
center is also out with the still recovering from concussions.
(26:03):
The Grenard part probably hurts them, obviously even more because
of the pressure that that he can create the Bears.
I think I think TJ. Edwards is out, which does
hurt them. I think I've been a broken record on
this today, but I think this is if there's ever,
if there's ever been a game for the Purple to
(26:25):
try to run the ball, despite the head coach's proclivities,
this is it because the Bears have been thin against
the run, and I think they'll be even thinner if
Edwards in fact doesn't go. They have not been very
good handling the run at all this season. I think
they're averaging giving up more than five yards a run.
So to me, help the kid quarterback out. Don't be afraid.
(26:47):
And by the way, I you know me, I like
short passes too. I you know, a few weeks ago,
our bit was the power of the completion compels you.
I'm okay with you know, runs or short passes, because
to me sometimes they're almost synonymous. They're equal. Just make
plays where the QB has a chance to sustained drives
(27:11):
and relax a little bit because he's not under heat
because of my god, we're about to give up the
ball again on third and twelve. You know, just just
keep the change moving.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
Yeah, well, here's a two thing to them. But you're
talking about your coach who likes to throw the ball,
and he's gonna look at the bear secondary situation at
the Terise Stevenson, who you can mess with. Jalen is
not a lot to play. Kyla Gordon's out and Jakwon
Brisks banged up as well. This is the week that
I can get JJ going through the air.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
That's what I know.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
That's what he's gonna be thinking. And I will tell
you this, the one weird thing about the Bears defense
is that, yeah, it's been leaky and the secondary has
been torched at times. You know Nayshn rot right. I mean,
I know his dad saying he's got pass breakups, He's
got a couple of picks, he's got a couple of
plumber recoveries. But it seems like he's a lot of
times he's around the ball and it is on the
able to make plays and that makes him a target.
(28:02):
So I think the one thing that the Bears have
done well three things. One, takeaways. They're big en though
takeaways this year. Two they've been great on third down defense.
And they've been great in a rental and that's kind
of prop that's kind of been a buffer against the
yards they've given up on the ground and through the air.
So that's going to be interesting to watch play out
(28:24):
on Sunday against the Vikings. Guy, I think kose he
is still gonna be looking over Chuck plays. I think
you're right about running the ball more. Yeah, I think
you got the personnel to do it. Aaron Jones looked
great ever since he came off the injury list. I
think you should accentuate that. But Kelsey, I'm not calling
Kelsey the mad bomber, but he's a mad man when
it comes to wanting to throw.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
The ball pretty close. There's no question about that. What
do you think we can say so far about the
impact that Ben Johnson has had? Not so much in
terms of whether the offense is better at the end
of games or closing out drives, whatever, but just in
terms of how he has run the team. Have we
seen enough to think, all right, I get it. I
(29:04):
definitely see why they coveted him, why everybody coveted him.
This guy's going to be a pretty good coach.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Well, I think that the work started in during training
camp with getting his philosophy across and holding the office
to hon house Fits accountable. And there's a lot to
be a hell of accountable about. I mean, Luther Burden
couldn't get lined up right during lock throughs during camp.
You know, that's how far some people have come. There
were plenty of false starts and the League of procedures
(29:33):
and that actually leaked into the beginning of the season
when the Bears were getting a lot of those types
of penalties, and he's been he's been focusing on that
and he's drilled down on that. And then he also
jumped on the leadership on the team. Hey, it can't
always be the coach. Players. Have the whole players accountable too,
you know. So he's got them involved as a collaboration
(29:55):
in order to kind of be a little more disciplined.
And it's been that way the last couple of weeks.
Think kills to has some ways to go. As a passer.
I still think it holds onto the ball a little
too much, and I still think he doesn't let the
ball work when there's when there's yards there. But he
is better. He is definitely better from a year ago.
The pace and throw for four thousand yards, which no
Bears quarterback has done. They rebuilt the interior of the
(30:17):
offensive line and that's kept him clean. He's only been
sacked fourteen times this year after being sacked the league
high sixty eight last year. So there are some there's
some incremental steps being taken here in terms of where
the offense is headed. The one, the one corny thing
that Johnson does, which I can't believe works because it
goes back I heard. I first heard this phrase in
(30:40):
first grade about good better best. Never take a rest here,
duke gets better, you better gets best. I mean, I
was like something I heard when I was like in
grade school, and that's like a mantra, like after when
they're in the locker room screaming that that thing, but
it's clicking, they're embracing it and it's working. So if
(31:00):
the if the players are buying in the corny stuff
like that, that means they've got some respect for the
head coach.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
Twins hires to the staff. Thus far, any thoughts, any impressions.
The only thing that struck me is I'm trying to
understand what point you're trying to deliver by telling people
that your list of managers was eighty deep at the start.
(31:27):
I just don't know what that accomplishes. I don't know
if that's supposed to impress anybody. Maybe it was true,
but I tend to think that that's always true for
a lot of people, are a lot of organizations, and
you don't even bother mentioning it when it's that why,
it doesn't really mean anything, does it? Eighty people. What
does that really say. It's just it's kinda it sounded
like showing off to me, and I don't think it
(31:48):
impressed anybody.
Speaker 5 (31:50):
I don't know, man, that that corporate collaborative horizontal leadership
crap leaks into every facet here. I sit and off,
but I sit in meetings with the Start and they're like,
we want to do this, we want to do this.
So we're all throwing stuff out and we got twenty
five or thirty things on the board, and we end
up starting to show you put them in different categories
of buckets, and they were able to whoole down to
what we think are the core things we're trying to
(32:12):
get at here. And maybe they just had a bunch
of people, Hey, send me a list of your ten
favorite manager of prospects, and maybe just started spitballing in
a Start from there. I don't know if I would.
I don't know if I would communicate that to the media,
you know, even if you did do it, because to me,
it's just it's just noise. You make it sound like
(32:33):
you had this super excesive third what you didn't, which
no stone was unturned. But you know, we don't want
to know how the cake was baked. We just want
the cake out of the oven and the slice on
our plate, you know. So Yeah, so I do think
that's a little.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Bit overkilled, no doubt. Uh. Any impressions of the hires
that have been made thus far, what strikes you.
Speaker 5 (32:54):
I'm happy to see Toby hart gardenher get a shot
with the major league staff. He knows, he knows a
bunch of guys because they came through Saint Paul and
maybe you know, uh, he has the right words and
the messages for them to help them take the next step.
Really happy with for LaTroy Hawkins because I think LaTroy
will be a really good coach. I think the totality
(33:14):
of his career, you know, put them in a good
spot to be effective. Uh. He's He's threw up a
lot of wisdom, a lot of experience. He went from
a guy who couldn't throw the ball over the plate.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (33:24):
And I remember in O two when they finally switched
over from Dick Sutch to Rick Anderson. Now it was
like a breath of fresh air to LaTroy. And they
also signed Mike Jackson as a free agency pitcher. Veteran
guy who ended up putting putting his armund around LaTroy
and kind of helping him get over to hump to
become a quality reliever and it. Since then, he's been
(33:45):
with so many different organizations and has seen a lot,
been a lot around a lot of pictures. I just
think that his experiences go where off well. On the
pitch staff, that's there. I don't know much about the
bench coach, although he went to the University of Illinois Chicago,
where I went to for two years. So it's always
good to see a fellow flamer in baseball, so we
(34:07):
have something to talk about when I see him. But
other than that, we have another hitting coach. That's the
only ump out of me. We got another hitting coach
after we let one go went to the World Series
with the Toronto Blue Jays. We got rid of the
guy we had, we got him to replace, got to
replace him, and now we have a third guy. So
(34:28):
I hope they can find I hope they can find
someone that clicks and says the right things to get
these guys going.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
The new bench coach is Mark Hallberg.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Is that correct, Albert?
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Yeah, that's it. Just for the record. Good Sunday column
we're running out of time here against the clock. What's
Sunday gonna be about?
Speaker 5 (34:45):
Actually Sunday is I'm actually a s fall so off
Dakota right now at the US the US Curling Trials.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Nice.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
This is like the path to the being on the
Olympic team. Sore with John Schuster and the Peterson sisters.
And I'll have curling coverage and paper on Sunday because
we don't curling.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Why not? A little change of pace is not a
bad idea. Have fun there. I appreciate the time as always. Well,
chat next week. Thanks lovel all right, Dan, take care
lavelle e Neil.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
The third on the road chasing the curling Olympic dream
not bad at all.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
I mentioned the Denver Nuggets, the Wolves opponent Saturday night.
That's another place he could have gone. They're nine and two,
and again we've had tended to have the Nuggets number.
Certainly postseason. We seem to be the antidote to when
they were the world champions. They're better. This version of
them is better. So it'll be interesting to see if
the Vike, if the Wolves can match that as well.
(35:42):
That is tomorrow night, So lots of you, I mean
it's very busy.
Speaker 4 (35:47):
Wild matinee tomorrow, well like late matten a five o'clock correct, Yeah,
Wolves tomorrow night, Gophers tonight, Viking Sunday be a one
hour edition of Sunday Sermons.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
For the record, A number of.
Speaker 4 (36:05):
People are believed they heard Guardsy toot during his bit.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
I don't think he was tooting. I think it was
just the the limitations of the line that seemed to
sort of imitate sounds that might be associated with the
expulsion of gas. It happened so much, yes, that there's
no way. Yeah, I mean that's that's I'm not sure
he's capable of flatulence on Q to that effect. So no,
(36:35):
I know, I know, it's just for our audience. There's
just nothing wackier guards on the air, because that's what
we are. We're we're still twelve. But no, in this case,
I think it was just technically speaking, there was just
a little bit of sound built in from his location.
(36:56):
I think he had a squeaky chair. Well it was
too I wasn't sure, but it sounded me like a
squeaky chair, which we occasionally have had that problem in
here as well. Great guest lineup today, great audience, as always,
but a great guest lineup today included Ben Gestling at
four thirty? Is that correct? Is I think it was
(37:18):
hit four thirty? That's right. Gurby was outstanding today. Or
for the predictions segment where I've just about given up
it's all podcastable. By the way, well, when will winners
know whether they get tickets to see Vikings packer Vikings
bears on the basis of the Gurby lock of the.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
Week this afternoon. They may already, they may already know.
That's how stuns. That's a good gig if you can
get it.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
And then of course Lovell joined the last half hour
of the broadcast sermons. Then, as I mentioned earlier, it
will be one hour tour between nine and ten o'clock
as the Vikings pregame will be at ten, will be
able to review be a Gofer game against the Oregon
Duck more preview of the Vikings. Maybe look back on
(38:02):
the Wolves and the Nuggets and look back on the
Wild and the Ducks. That's a Saturday, the Saturday game. Correct?
Does the Wild play Sunday too?
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (38:10):
They play back to back? Am I wrong? I want
to say they do?
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (38:12):
They do against ye guess that's it. That's what I
thought line for tonight for the Gophers.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
Yes, thank you. They're twenty five and a half point
on twenty five and a half. I thought it was
even bigger than that. But that's that's not a good sign,
boys and girls, it really isn't. It's not what you're
really supposed to be, even if Oregon's better and they
got nil and we've got nothing and they've got everything.
Thanks again for watching and as I say, for listening
and Gopher football Saturday on a Friday night. The pregame
(38:40):
show is coming up next from Eugene, Oregon. We'll talk
Sunday at ninth oh
