Bumper program on a rather murky, feels like wintry Friday
afternoon here in the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

was about to say defense wins championships. I'm not sure
it's as simple as that anymore. In some sports. I
think the way the game has changed, many of these
games have changed, offense does matter a lot. In fact,
there was a big debate that broke out between Kevin

Durant and Draymond Green. Green basically saying when Durant was
on the team, it was still the Warriors still won
more with defense and offense has fired back and said,
not so fast, my friend, and I think the moral
of the stories you need both. I think the moral

of the story is as much as we like to
talk about those cliches and grew up with the idea
of defense, it's all about defense. It's more, it's more
complicated than that, depending on the game, the sport we're
talking about, and in truth, unless you have a world
class defense, you tend to need some of both. You

need to be the championship teams generally anymore. I think
need to be good at both, maybe very good at
one of them. But I don't think you can buy
being feeble offensively. I don't think you can be the
what was the what year to the Baltimore Ravens win
it with Brian Billick with one of the worst offenses
I ever saw. That was a world class defense, and

so unless you can put together that kind of defense,
you need to have some of both. On the other hand,
I think it is also fair to say that you're
not going to give yourself much of any chance to
go anywhere if your defense is mediocre to miserable. We
can debate how high in the food chain you got

to get defensively, but I think we'll agree if you're
terrible defensively or you're close to that, you ain't going anywhere.
And we've got several teams in this town that need
to look in the mirror and have a big time
reckoning when it comes to playing defense. Your favorite hockey team,

but we reduce any real chance we have to win
when we're that miserable in front of the net or
in the net, whichever way you want to look at it.

we're going to recommit to the Doberman defense, and they
haven't come close to doing any of that thus far.
I've got the Wolves defensive efficiency unofficially at fifty seventh
in the National Basketball Association. Not gonna work, not really

to be taken seriously. And we've had quotes from several players,
including Dante di Vincenzo, about being a sometimes team, and
we got to be in every day every time. I
don't have the exact quote in front of me, but
that part of he makes it sound as if it's
all effort. Com and I were just talking about that
because he was asking for my opinion on it. I

don't think it. I think effort's part of it, but
I don't think it's all of it. I'm a little
concerned too about just whether we have the same defensive
pieces at the highest level that we thought we did before.
But once again, regardless of the reasons, that number a

defensive efficiency at well, it's deficiency. You're right at twenty
seven just is not going to give you much of
a chance to get on any kind of a role.
You can win one, lose one, whatever the case may be.
And in the next game. We didn't talk about this
yesterday we mentioned the fact that, speaking of bad defense,
the Wolves gave up eighty three points in the second
half of that game. That's not tenable, that's not serious,

and part of that was horrible defensive rebounding. The Knicks
tortured the Wolves on the board or on the boards,
as we like to say in the business. And last,
but not least, you're in Minnesota, Vikings defense getting a
lot of kudos foreign doesn't this tell you a lot.

Holding the Detroit Lions to twenty four points. Now, again,
the way the Lions can score, and the way we
have been been giving up points, and even the way
the game played out, there were absolutely stretches in which
the difference in that game was the fact that the
Vikings defense reduced Tremier Gibbs to pretty close to meaningless

that ballgame. So I'm not here to denigrate the defensive
performance this last game, even though in the end you
get you grew up twenty four points. But I am
here to say that being ranked twentieth in scoring defense,
as the Vikings currently are, that also is not going
to work. We were if I recall last year top five,

I think we were fifth, not in yardage, but in
scoring defense. And I gotta tell you that it's a
common thread for all three of these teams. And if
the Vikings obviously want to build on what they did

last week, they're going to have to continue to be
as good or better defensively. If the Wild want to
give themselves a chance as a team with not much
margin for error, to get back into interesting territory this year,
they're gonna have to tighten it up a lot, as
far as I'm concerned, a huge amount. And if the

Walls really want to give themselves a meaningful chance to
get back to the Final four, their defense has to
approve dramatically. Now they can say maybe they want to
believe that if they make their offense more efficient and
they make their offense great, that they can live with
some slippage defensively, because that's what happened last year. Not
this much slippage. I'll ask it to the Texters. Because

in basketball we tend to associate defense and defensive deficiencies
with effort. We don't seem to talk about that as
much in hockey or in football, And I'm not sure
that's fair because I think sometimes, believe it or not,
effort can be part of the deal. I thought, for example,

in the second half of the Chargers game, I didn't
think there was much effort from the Vikings defense at all.
So is it in the case of these three teams
all facing significant defensive deficiencies defensive breakdowns? Is it effort?
Is it talent? Is it a combo platter of the two?

Is it injury? What enters into the fact that right
now we've got three teams all playing that have some
very significant issues there. I wouldn't call the go go
to go for a defense great. I didn't think they

looked particularly good in the against Iowa. Obviously they had
you could argue actually a pretty bad second half that
allowed Michigan State to get back into the game and
to think that they were going to steal it. So
I don't know that anybody in this town right now
has any kind of corner on legitimate defense. The Wolves

can hang their hat on the fact that they have
been really good defensively two years ago. That was their
calling card, But we're a law long way from here
to there, I would say, Branshawn Bryant. The KFN text
