Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome into the two Minute Warning, presented by three M,
the official science partner of the Minnesota Vikings. I'm your
host Tatum Everett from the Vikings Entertainment Network, and what
a game? In Detroit, The Vikings snapped a five game
skit against the Lions with a gritty twenty seven to
twenty four win at Ford Field. JJ McCarthy showing why
he's the future, tossing two touchdowns to Justin Jefferson and

(00:27):
TJ Hockinson and even adding a nine yard rushing score.
The defense came alive as well, sacking Jared Goff five times,
forcing a key fumble and it wasn't perfect, but it
was clutch, capped off by McCarthy's ice cold third downstrike
to Jalen Naylor to steal it. Now the focus shifts
to Week ten, a big test at home against the

(00:49):
Baltimore ravens. Lamar Jackson is back and looking dangerous as ever,
throwing for four touchdowns in a blowout win over Miami.
Can Brian Flores's blitz heavy defense, can Tyne Jackson's dual
threat magic? And how healthy will the Vikings starters be?
Head coach Kevin O'Connell spoke on Friday to relay the
final injury news and answer some questions about hosting the

(01:11):
Ravens at US Bank Stadium.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I wanted to start out today.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
I'm an express from our organization to the Dallas Cowboys organization.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Our condolences.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Do you know, after the tragic passing of Marshawn Neelan,
we did host him for a visit during the draft
process and got to know him pretty well.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
So so unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
And I talked to the team today and you know,
it was not my first time referencing mental health with
our team. Not only the resources that we have available,
but how we are you know, in this building where
each other's partners in in mental health and making sure
the players always know I'm available twenty four to seven,

(01:59):
three cclive days a year to to be whatever resource
that I can personally be, but most importantly the resources
that we provide our guys that are so important. Mental
health is a real thing and it's something that's always
on my mind in regards to not only our players,
but as a former player all NFL players. So just

(02:19):
wanted to start with that and make sure our you know,
our condolences and prayers are with the Kneeland family, and.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
I just wanted to start there.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Excited for our team to get a chance to be
back at US Bank Stadium in front of our fans.
Hopefully we get to our our usual one of one
electric environment in US Bank Stadium. A really good football
team coming to town. We're gonna have to play really
well to win the game. Giving you guys an injury update,
we'll have two players ruled out for the game, Jeff

(02:48):
Akuda and Josh Oliver. Two players questionable, THEO Jackson and
Aaron Jones. No one else in the game will go
in with a designation.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
There In practice unfolded a limited.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
It felt like he was limited today, but he did
participate in practiced today. You know, we wanted to make
sure we gave him the early part of the week,
not push it too early, and I think we reaped
the benefits of that.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Today we have CJ. Ham.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
Just how much better is it going into a game
knowing you'll have that option.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, it's it always, you know, It's not just as
a fullback. You guys know that.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
It's it's his role that he plays on special teams.
It's his role he plays as a leader, it's his
role he plays on third down, So depending on the
game and what we view as the best way to
not only have protection but just the one of our smartest,
you know, most prepared football players I've ever been around,
and for sure on this team, it does as a
coach give you so much confidence levels. You know that

(03:52):
with Aaron, JP and and Zay and and and CJ,
we've got really a group of four when they're healthy,
and and ty Chandler working his way back as well,
So really good situation in our running back room and
CJ being.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Up and available that healthy is such a great thing
for our team. Running back pass pro is as important
as it's ever been.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, I just think, you know, the days of seeing
just a four down front and people just rushing straightforward,
those days are a few and far between. There's been
a lot of evolution to pass rush games, and not
only that, but ways to manipulate you know, slides and
understand how to make the back stay in protection and

(04:36):
you can schematically try to do things to play that
game with an opponent. But you know, I don't know
whether it's the the evolution of all these senior assistants
that go from one team to another that you know,
no systems and things like that, but it just feels
like it just feels like people are attacking not only protections,
because the days of getting true free runners are are,

(04:58):
you know, with the systems of evolving on the protection world,
those are harder and harder. But with that becomes a
chance to activate more one on ones, maybe in your favor,
and those stunts and games that can be really hard
on teams trying to sort out who is indeed coming
and getting your five or six on the five or
six that are coming. So it's a it's a back

(05:20):
and forth sometimes even in game ebbs and flows of
how you want to handle certain looks. And I think
it's a major part of every NFL game that gets
played every single Sunday. Yeah, I've always I've always liked
Asante and I know he's taken a lot of visits,
and I think the big thing for him specifically, just
you know, in regards to where he's been at from

(05:42):
a health standpoint, is I think he wants to make
sure everybody totally understands where he's at health wise, and
h you know, I know he wants to play football,
so I know, just like any other personnel situation. Our
personnel guys are, you know, doing the best they can
to always evaluate any thing that would you be a
good move for the Minnesota Vikings and help us win.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
That's that's what those guys do.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
The Vikings won at Ford Field for the first time
since twenty twenty while quarterback JJ McCarthy's return to Michigan
was another milestone moment in his young career. Not only
did his own record as a starter improved to two
and one, but he was fourteen of twenty five for
one hundred and forty three yards and two touchdown passes,
including a game ceiling completion to Jalen Naylor. McCarthy was

(06:32):
asked this week about how long he takes to revel
in the victory and when does his mindset shift to
the next game.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
I would say once we hit the plane, it was
flush it. We got to move on, because that's one
thing that I took from, you know, going from week
one to week two. For me personally, obviously it was
a big emotional win. But you know, you have to
turn that page. You have to realize there's so many
great challenges, so many great football teams in the horizon
and we have to make sure we're on it every
single day.

Speaker 6 (06:59):
So you know that comes with it. Just flush it
and worry about the next point.

Speaker 7 (07:03):
JJ. When you talk about accuracy outside the pocket and
when you're on the move, how do you drill that
down so that you can make those throws on the
run and be precise with them.

Speaker 5 (07:13):
For me, it just goes back to how many times
am I gonna in a comfortable setting put myself in
uncomfortable positions, you know, body positions to make those throws
and being on the run.

Speaker 6 (07:23):
It's not uncomfortable, but it's different.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
And you know, obviously, coming off of six weeks of
not being able to run, that's gonna be an area
of my game that I need to catch up on
and improve on.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
And we did a lot today to do that.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Ex Kevin's talked a lot about just the lower half
and the progression from that standpoint, Where do you feel
like you're at just in that regard with your mechanics
and in and out of the pocket.

Speaker 6 (07:47):
I feel like I'm growing.

Speaker 5 (07:48):
You know, that's the number one metric that I really
focus on, is just growth. Was I better today than
I was yesterday? And you know, there's a lot of
room to go, a lot more growth that happened, you know,
being twenty two years old. But you know, I'm just
so grateful for the coaches and you know, they're coaching points.
Everything's so easily understandable and easy to apply.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
So you have a couple of mon support media JJ,
it looked like some of the plays that you were
kind of canning them, we're going to another play.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
Just how comfortable were you with that, like in that environment,
and then just like getting back in there. I was
extremely comfortable in the environment.

Speaker 5 (08:22):
You know, I really just kind of it's like white noise,
Like at the end of the day, it's loud, but
all the stuff we're doing procedurally is all non verbal.
So the more calm you could be in those moments,
the easier the communication is going to be the line
of communication. So I feel like, you know, just the
preparation throughout the week and understanding their defense, but most importantly,

(08:43):
understanding your game plan in and out is going to
help me play fast and help the guys play fast
with ample amount of time to do their job. But uh, yeah,
it just goes to the way I've been coached all
week and you know the way they set it up
for me.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
And did you see that JJ to JJ connection? That
touchdown from McCarthy and Jefferson a thing of beauty. It's
at the tone early on for the Vikings offense as well.
Let's go out to Justin Jefferson's press Confidence where he
talks about the physical battle ahead against the Ravens defense
on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
I'm up for the challenge for sure.

Speaker 8 (09:16):
They are a great, you know, great team all in all,
you know, great defense, great defensive line, great secondary. So
I'm definitely you know, confident in myself to go out
there and perform like I always do. I'm excited for
for JJ to go out, you know, back at home
and uh to show out in front of the fans
and uh, the game plan, the concepts that we have

(09:37):
for this week. We feel like it's going to be
a great matchup. So I'm excited for it, and it's
a great opportunity for us to uh, you know, get
our extra dub on the on the board.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Listen, you know what a site to come.

Speaker 9 (09:47):
Back from injury and perform. So you've seen JJ do
it twice this year. And the fact that he refers
to himself as nine and he puts on a different persona.
Like what have you seen for him in those kind
of roller coaster times that has really helped him become
who he is that we saw in Detroit.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yeah, uh, the the persona.

Speaker 7 (10:06):
Uh you know that.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
I mean I like it personally. I feel like he
he you know, he understands that.

Speaker 8 (10:14):
You know, he has to turn on another switch when
he gets in the game and uh mentally physically. Uh,
you kind of got to talk yourself into it. You know,
you have to, just like me with Jets, you know,
it's it's the same thing I'm justin right now, but
when when I step on the field and uh, it's
a whole different mode. So I kind of feel the
same way for him, you know, he he kind of
turns it on and he turns into a different mode. Uh,

(10:36):
you know when when we're out there on that field
and we're competing and we're going to war.

Speaker 10 (10:40):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (10:40):
So as as something that I'm kind of interested into
seeing how far he takes that. But I mean I'm
just excited for him to continue to go out there
with that confidence that he have, uh, and to continue
to perform.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
There's more to come on the two minute warning, we'll
check in with Minnesota's own Blake Cashman as he looks
back at the incredible formance he just had against the
Lions and now he can build off of that moving forward.
We'll also hear from Brian Flores and his plan on
defending the Ravens offense. That'll be right here on the
two minute warning, but first from the field to the

(11:41):
to the two minute Warning. Once again, I'm your host,
Tatum Everett and the Vikings face another explosive offensive threat
in the Ravens this Sunday at US Bank Stadium. Quarterback
Lamar Jackson looked very impressive in his four touchdown return
last Thursday night against the Dolphins. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores
is seeing the growth in Lamar's game, knows his crew

(12:02):
well once again, need to bring their a game to
contain the Ravens dynamic playmakers.

Speaker 11 (12:07):
Obviously it's a huge test, uh for us. Defensively, They've
got you know, one of the most dynamic players probably ever,
and Lamar Jackson and a lot of other a lot
of other players. I know he gets a lot of
the headlines and he's kind of the main story. But
you know, Mark Andrews, Derrick, Henry z A. Flowers and
the list goes on and on and so huge tap

(12:28):
challenge for us. You know, we're in the process of
preparing that. We had a good day yesterday, good meetings
and good walk through today and we got to just
continue to stream together good days to give ourselves a
chance to uh to play well and certainly going to
be a big, big challenge.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
And Jonathan Allen, is that the kind of performance you
guys envision when you signed him back in March?

Speaker 11 (12:50):
Yeah, I thought both both guys play well. Really I
think the entire d line played well. But those guys,
you know, played well last week. They were physical, good
move mints, good push in the pocket, huge contributors to
the overall you know, team success. And you know the
plan going in and felt good about where where they
were and feel good about where they are and you know,

(13:12):
just just trying to build on that.

Speaker 7 (13:14):
Well, you got a couple of games against Lamar when
you were in Miami.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
How do you what have you.

Speaker 7 (13:19):
Seen different about him over these past few years since
the last time you guys played down.

Speaker 11 (13:25):
Yeah, I mean he's he's improved and gotten better in
all areas of his game year after year after year
after year. I mean he's, you know, a perennial essentially,
an MVP candidate. You know, when people talk about him
or think about him, you think about the dynamic runs
and the scrambles and the off schedule plays. This guy's

(13:48):
an an an excellent pastor of the football quarterback and
so defensively you're dealing with everything. Yeah, there's some history,
but that was years ago, and he's certainly improved and
gotten a lot lot better in all facets of his game. Leadership, community, offense, acumen,
deep balls, intermediate, short, scrambles, I mean, all of it.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Protections.

Speaker 11 (14:10):
It's clear that he's got a really good feel for
how to protect himself when they get the ball out,
you know, when to take some chances, et cetera, et cetera,
and then They've got a lot of great skill players
who you know, understand that, you know, if things aren't perfect,
he's probably going to make a move and create some
space or create an off schedule play, and they do

(14:31):
a great job of finding space and getting open. So
we've got to do a good job of when he
does get out, which inevitably against a player like this,
it's going to happen, and we'll do everything we can
to try to keep him in the pocket. But you know,
with a player like this, he's going to get out.
We've got to do a great job of staying coverage,
plasterom receivers and just trying to track him down as
best we can. But yeah, there's there's some history there,

(14:53):
but I mean, obviously, like he's per Pro Bowl player.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
One of the key contributors to this makings defenses linebacker
Blake Cashman. Last week against the Lions, Cashman led the
team with fourteen tackles and caused a key turnover in
the third quarter, forcing his first career fumble. I sat
down with Blake this week to chat about what it
feels like to you back out on the field after
missing some time this season. Ever since he returned from injury,

(15:19):
played in every single defensive snap. What does that say
about your termination?

Speaker 7 (15:24):
Well, I'm a competitor. I want to be out there.

Speaker 12 (15:27):
I also, you know, take a lot of pride and
joy to help command the defense. And you know, I
believe when I'm out there, I do a good job
at that, and you know we're a better football team.
But to be out and not be out there, it
stresses the defense. You know, you're putting guys in positions

(15:48):
that they're not normally in and then ultimate guys have
to you know, play more snaps, which in a long
season that can stress your body.

Speaker 7 (15:57):
So my team expects to be out there. I want
to be out there for every snap.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Blake Cashman, Andrew van Ginkel, Jonathan Grenard and all in
the front seven in this game first time since Week one?

Speaker 7 (16:09):
What was that like?

Speaker 12 (16:11):
Oh, it was great to have Gink back. He's such
an important piece to this team, to this defense. I
don't think Gank gets a lot of credit for how
smart he is as a football player. You know, he's
like another mic linebacker out there.

Speaker 7 (16:23):
With just what he sees.

Speaker 12 (16:25):
Colleen plays out which helps the whole defense. But he's
just a guy you can always count on to do
his job and being the right spot and so you know,
we're a better football team when he's out there.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
So you face, you.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
Faced a group of a duo of really great running
backs and Detroit able to hold them to sixty four
yards or sixty five rushing yards. When you take that
game plan, that confidence that you get from stopping them,
how can that translate to facing Baltimore Lamar Jackson and
they're want to run heavy offense.

Speaker 12 (17:01):
I'll go back to it starts with the guys up front.
You know a lot of people say you win and
gain football games in the trenches, and I just felt
like the physicality, the effort that our defensive line brought
is what started our dominant run defense in that game.
And then from a standpoint of linebackers and safeties, like

(17:21):
create stress for an offense when we're showing these disguises
and presentations of pressure not bringing pressure, and then hey,
now we're gonna throw pressure at them.

Speaker 7 (17:31):
Just keep that guessing game a little bit.

Speaker 12 (17:34):
So you know, I'll keep going back to the word ownership,
like everybody just dominating their role as it pertains to
the scheme is what's going to help us.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Sure, I mean, when you face someone like Lamar Jackson,
a quarterback will be very different from Jared Golf. How
can what kind of changes do you need to make
in that week to make sure you're prepared for that.

Speaker 12 (17:55):
We do need to get them off the spot, you know,
you look at the analytics in most quarterbacks, they struggle
when they have to get moved up the spot. But
that's what makes Lamar so unique is when you do
move him off the spot, he can make you pay
and extend plays and he's going to make hero plays.
We know he's a tremendous player. He's going to be
an MVP conversation every year, so we know that, but

(18:18):
it's limiting those plays. And so when we rush him,
when we blitz him, everybody that's involved in that has
to understand what that rush is because if you're running
a certain stunt on the right side, you know you
need a player from the left like balancing out the rush,
pushing the pocket, or covering those guys if they're going

(18:39):
to make inside moves. So audi an organized plan so
everyone's on the same page, because that's usually how quarterbacks
will kill you with their legs, is when one guy
up front in the.

Speaker 7 (18:49):
Rush is not.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
Well.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
This is shaping up to be a strong chess match
of a game in week ten. And along for the
ride is ESPN anchor and national radio play by play
announcer Steve Levy. He was in Detroit for that game
and he's on the call again for ESPN Radio when
the Vikings hosts the Ravens. We sat down with Steve
as he helps preview what he's most excited to see

(19:14):
in this matchup. Joining us now virtually is ESPN Radio's
Steve Levy. Steve is going to be on the call
for the Vikings and Ravens this Sunday at noon on
ESPN Radio. And we were also fortunate to have you
on last week's call in that great win against the Lions.
What were your impressions of that Vikings team that just

(19:35):
felt like they came out ready to play on that one.

Speaker 10 (19:38):
Ford Field is really a tough place to play, and
I know the Vikings have a big home field advantage
as well. Those are two of the lower stadiums the NFL,
But to come in to Ford Field the way it
is and JJ McCarthy, I think people have heard about
him for so long now they feel like oh, he's
experienced guy, but really just making his third start, it

(19:59):
was really impressive to see, and really right from the
opening drive, like I just remember a critical third down
conversion there, and all of a sudden, they felt very
much in the game. But maybe my biggest takeaway was
that Jared Goff and the Lions offense looked uncomfortable all
day at home, and so that's a real credit to

(20:21):
Brian Flores and everything the Vikings defense did last week.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
I'm sure you're watching the storyline of JJ McCarthy in
his trying to string together two starts, hopefully two wins.
What do you need to see from the young QB
in this game as he carries on the momentum from
last weekend.

Speaker 10 (20:39):
I think it's taken the next step he was. I
was so impressed by him last week because I honestly,
I wasn't expecting much. I really wasn't Detroit's you know,
we said it's an impossible place to play with everything
they got.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Going on there.

Speaker 10 (20:52):
He looked cool and calm. Listen, the lights are never
going to be too bright for JJ McCarthy. We know
all the guy does is win every other level, and
now we want to see it at the NFL, but
he looked cool and calm. He took the shot to
win the game late in the game when he needed
to to get the stranglehold. There was some questionable play calling.

(21:14):
Mike Tannebaum and I both thought from the ESPN radio
booth by by O'Connell, we were very considered with some
clock management late in that game. But McCarthy made the
key throw they had to make late to seal the deal.
And can he do it again?

Speaker 2 (21:27):
All right?

Speaker 10 (21:28):
So now again, confidence is not this kid's problem. We
know that he's got a full vote of confidence, but
can he take the next step do it in consecutive weeks.
There's more tape on him now than there ever has
been before. And ball security thought there were a bunch
of low snaps last week which would be something to
watch for as well. So ball security hanging on to

(21:51):
it and making good decisions and remembering, you know what,
the punt is not a bad play. Live to fight
another down, another series, and that'll be credit, I think
for him this week.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Well, I'm sure the guys are itching to get back
to US Bank Stadium for another home game this Sunday.
If you're unable to make it to the game. The
TV coverage is on Fox, with kickoff set at noon.
You can also catch Pa Pete Burstch, Ben Lieber, and
Mike Mussman right here on KFAM with the pregame show
beginning at ten am. All across the Vikings Audio network.

(22:24):
It's Vikings and Ravens live from US Bank Stadium this Sunday.
Thank you so much for listening to the two minute
warning presented by three M, the official science partners of
