Hoppers with Miller Lyte in the Minnesota Vikings. This is
our Salute to Service Week. For the rest of this week,
we are going to be doing events all around the
Twin Cities, and ladies and gentlemen. Is my honor, my pleasure.
I love this man so much. Hall of Famer number
(01:48):
ninety three, John Randall is our guest.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Hey folk, damn glad to be here.
Speaker 6 (01:55):
Eleven seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, six times First team
All Pro, and seven time Pro Bowler. Of course, he
is a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
He is an.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
Emmy Award winner as well. Yeah, am I missing any
other awards that you have won? No, I was thinking
about that number one cigar smoker for crucks.
Speaker 7 (02:15):
Oh yes, I am, of course not. I do have
a friend named Tony, so I do have a Tony.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Oh.
Speaker 6 (02:21):
You gotta tell you that counts as well. I like
how you snuck that in one hundred and thirty seven
point five career sacks fifteen and a half sacks in
nineteen ninety seven.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
That season was absolutely amazing. I would love to talk to.
Speaker 6 (02:37):
You about we have to talk about this because it
was so much fun. Went down to Canton, Ohio. Jared
Allen inducted. Jared Allen, Yeah yeah, right. Who started this
stupid show made me be a part of it is
Jared Allen. He gets inducted in the Hall of Fame.
We're hanging out there at Jared's party is an after
party and a bunch.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Of the gold jack It's they would.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
Bounce around to the different parties. And John and I
are sitting there talking and at Jared's party, and then
I see Emmett Smith and I know you and Emmett dear,
oh my god, yes, dear, dear friends. So I see
Emmett and I looked at you, and I go, I
gotta go over and say hi to him. Now, maybe
(03:21):
a couple of cocktails before I should have maybe maybe.
So I walk over to Emmitt Smith and with no
backup whatsoever, he's standing at the bar. I go and
I shake his hand, and I go, I go, you're
friends with John randall right, And he goes, oh, absolutely,
And I go, John told me you're the worst golfer
(03:43):
all plenty, And he looked at me.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
He's like, what about the worst golfer Mike.
Speaker 6 (03:48):
He says he kicks your ass every time, and he goes, well,
I mean he does beat me. You and I did
not discuss this, and you walked over right at that perfect.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Time, and I looked at you and I go, JR.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
You're full of crap.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Because help me here says you beat him every time.
Speaker 7 (04:03):
Yeah, but I told you that incompetence. I didn't even
till Oh my god. I mean he's one of my buddies.
He's one of my guys.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (04:13):
You know, we got in the hall together, and man,
we golfing for us, a lot of us Hall of famers.
I'm telling you, you come out and watch it. These
guys take it seriously. I mean they're so serious. And
you know you represent your state.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Excuse me.
Speaker 7 (04:30):
So I'm representing Minnesota and I'm bringing I'm bringing the cigars.
I got the music, and I don't bringing it, so
I hold my own. But man, these guys immin and uh,
actually Stirling Sharp who just got in and he actually
I should have brought his coin, and now he gave
me his coin which has his emblem on it.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
And also Shannon.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
And oh cool, oh yeah, yeah, brothers. Yeah, going in. Yes,
that's the first time, right, yeah, yeah, time.
Speaker 7 (05:00):
And I was like, this is a nice coin, but
with the exception with this Green Bay packer of crap
on it, dude, I like it.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
You're not using that on the green the market.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
No, true, No, I cannot come on, must I can't
do that. But it was great to see Jared get
in and he so deserved it. And I think some
people were actually talking about him going in as a chief.
I'm like, hey, there's no damn way he's gonna go
to movie because the man for me, he is him.
(05:34):
You know, the mullet, you know.
Speaker 6 (05:37):
Yeh, the mullet has to stay in Minnesota.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
Yes, yes, but no.
Speaker 7 (05:41):
It was a great time, man, and I really got
to sit and talk to him and his dad and god,
it was just it was great to see the Purple
spirit back in Kenton, Wland.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
No, it was super cool. It was a lot of
fun for me. I was just very honored to be
sitting in a conversation with you, Emma and coach Dongee,
and all of a sudden, I started realizing what.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
Am I doing in this circle of conversation.
Speaker 7 (06:08):
Hey, you deserve to be there. I think that's one
of the things about Canton. People think it's just about
the Hall of Famers, but I think it's where our
fans really get to.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Come and it's.
Speaker 7 (06:20):
The home of a pro football Hall of Fame, and
it's where you come and you get to see it
the you know, the where football was started at excuse me,
and that's where it got started. And I think every
fan needs to go there. And uh I go back
least four times a year. And one of the things
I'm involved with it, it's the Salvation Army down there
(06:41):
in Canton. Yea, they have a call a campus, so
you can go there. You can get with needing food,
needing more education, needing help at home.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
They provide that all in Canton, Ohio at the campus.
I love that.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
All Right, we're here and Wakonya. We're here at Hoppers
with Miller Light and a bunch of great Minnesota Vikings
fans that are yes piling in over here, and we're
coming off of a Vikings twenty seven twenty four victory
in Detroit. Yes, And what's better than that is that
(07:16):
the Packers lost forty nine yardfield goal game winner. They lose,
and I really want to say it's because of those
ugliest PA season helps. They're hideous, just like the week before. Ever,
he's like, well the Steelers win the ugliest Yeah, yeah
(07:39):
the year Nope, here comes Greenberry.
Speaker 7 (07:41):
But I was excited though five Vikings though. There were
a lot of people who doubted us, say, hey, JJ,
he's not he's not ready, he's not gonna do this,
And I'm like, hey, we're playing Detroit. JJ's going home basically, yeah,
and it's gonna be It was. It was JJ versus
(08:04):
oh boy on the other side for Detroit golf.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
Uh no, the defensive man, oh oh Hutchinson.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah yeah yeah, former teammates.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
Yeah yeah, that's what I was like, We're going to
see who's the better man. Yeah, we saw it. We're
gonna get into.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
That a little bit later here.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
Just because the physicality that the Vikings brought both offensive
line defensive line. Yeah, so impressive in Detroit on the road.
You're coming off of that Chargers game, which it's like
still a little bit of throw up in my mouth,
like when the roller coaster goes too fast.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Yeah yeah, you're like, well, guy, I didn't like that
at all.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Oh no, but JJ McCarthy, now he is too and
O on the road and two and oh in the
NFC North and the kid, I know, you can sit
there and look at the numbers, you can kind of
crush those a little bit. And so far in the
three games that he's played, he's averaging like one hundred
and fifty yards. Uh, he's got four touchdowns, he's got
four interceptions to rushing touchdowns. But there's just something different
(09:07):
that we saw in what we wanted to see in JJ.
Speaker 7 (09:10):
I think what what I saw is more confidence. And
one of the things that I noticed was when he
was doing this, it's zen moment.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
On the sideline.
Speaker 7 (09:21):
I think for you to because for me personally, when
when I wanted to be myself on the field, it
takes a lot of not see on this, but it
takes a lot of confidence. Ball, but it takes a
lot of confidence to do that. And to watch him
try to be himself. Dude, he's coming into his own
(09:42):
and uh him and you still gotta look at it.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
He's still like a rookie. Yeah, it's a quarterback. It's
just three games.
Speaker 7 (09:49):
Yes, But the thing about him though, man, he's I
wanna say he's cocky, but damn, he just man, he's
he's in there and like, hey, you.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Know what, he's got an energy to Yes, I got this.
You are an energy guy yourself, so you gotta appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (10:04):
Yes, And when I watched him go in the locker
room before the game stem high fiving Koc, it shows
you that he's got that. To me, he's he's got that. Well,
he's Hey, you know what, I'm okay with being on
the pedestal. I'm okay realizing that teams are gonna try
and play me differently by trying to show me stuff
(10:27):
that they're I've never seen or trying to just outwit me.
So I'm very proud of him. And uh, you know, hey,
when this is a game when we need it in Detroit,
we're our backs against the ball because everybody nobody from whatever,
from ESPN to the c Bills, whatever, like, yeah, bikes
don't have a chance.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
How do you feel about the face paint.
Speaker 6 (10:50):
Because you got not only JJ McCarthy or he's got
the face paint thing going on there, Levi Drake Rodriguez,
who I absolutely love that suit.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
That's so Yes.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Yeah, the Texas guy, he is just an awesome, awesome dude.
But you know you yourself were known for the face paint. Yeah,
how are you feeling about that face paint game that's
going with the MINNESETAA game.
Speaker 5 (11:11):
I like it. You know.
Speaker 7 (11:12):
That tells me that I left the march, and I
think when we are on this planet, we will always
want to leave the mark. And to see so many people,
especially my Viking's wearing it. Man, I'm honored. I'm so
honored that my little touch on the game is still
out there and it's still being a party games. I
(11:35):
get on social media, people contact me, Hey, I'm wearing
face paint blah blah blah. So I'm very honored to
see that something that I was in the Viking locker
room saying it myself, Man, I gotta do something to
stand out, because you got I had Henry Thomas, Chris
Dolman who kind of had their own style, Chris Dolman
(11:56):
with a tape on the socks keeping them up, Henry
Thomas trying to with his hands tape, no gloves, and
I'm like, I don't know what I can do to me.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
You have something I got a house.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Was it accidental when you first did it?
Speaker 5 (12:11):
Or yeah?
Speaker 7 (12:12):
To something where I was just kind of rubbing my
eyes and winning the game and got like two thacks
and I'm like me and his kid from month to Texas,
gotta got two thicks the day. Whatever I did, I
gotta do it again.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
Yeah, yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
It's our absolute favorite.
Speaker 6 (12:29):
Hey, speaking of absolute favorites, Justin Jefferson, Yes, eight thousand.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Yards plus right, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
Only three receivers have ever done that in the first
six seasons of their career, and that, of course is
Moss and the egatory Holt as well. Moss and Jefferson
are the only two that did it before the age
of twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
What eight thousand yards?
Speaker 6 (12:54):
I bring this up not only because JJ is uh well,
I mean Justin Jefferson that we got to do that.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Yeah, yeah, is the best.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
But man, I.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
Would love to hear some.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
Randy Moss at least one story that you have playing
with Randy Moss, hanging out with him in the locker room,
maybe fishing with him and Denny Green.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
I don't know, Oh my god.
Speaker 7 (13:17):
So, uh, if I go for a Randy Moss store,
I gotta find something that's that's clean. Let me, no, no, no,
one of the to me, one of the best stories
about Randy Moss. Was was that Dallas game in Dallas,
and you know, he's a young guy, he's on a
(13:38):
team and he's like Thanksgiving game and he's like, man, there, y'all,
would y'all just wait till I get out there, Johnny Man,
y'all ain't gonna.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
See nothing like that. And you you know, I've been
in the league.
Speaker 7 (13:50):
You've heard guys always talking about what they're going to
do when they get in the game. And we're talking
Thanksgiving this in Dallas. People at home eating turkey, yeah,
waiting for the game to come on. And Randy man,
he just I don't know if he had an s
underneath this jersey or something, brother, but he was out
(14:12):
there and I'm like, I was telling I think it
was Eddie McDaniel. Somebody's going, man, does he know we're
in Dallas, sexy doing this? They may not let us
get out of here because we're in Cowboys country here,
just in Jerry Jones world. Man, this is this is
their game. And for what he did out.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
There, it was like three receptions in three touchdowns.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Oh my god.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Usually the most ridiculous stands ever.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
And what's his name? Woodson for the cowboy.
Speaker 7 (14:41):
I remember every time I see him, he actually still
talks about this and he's kind of says it with
a smile.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
And what was Randy mossong man? I said he was
on that Minnesota juice bro. He said he was upset
you guys didn't want to.
Speaker 7 (14:55):
Draft him twice and I'm like, We're coming to play
you guys on Thanksgiving. I'm like brou I said he
was an Afterwards again, he come up to me, told
you he's like trying to wish.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
I told you, Sonny, I almost gonna get him. I'm like,
oh my god.
Speaker 7 (15:16):
Because me being at Texan and I'm like, man, that's
the all I want to do was beat the Dallas Talboys.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
Oh sure, so Randy mossin, man, you beat that trouble.
Speaker 6 (15:30):
Let's talk a little bit about that Detroit game that
we were referencing earlier twenty seven, twenty four Bike's get
to win therefore and four lots of promise comes out.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Of the wind like that.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
But it's the physicality that was so transparent and different,
yes from I mean, you watch that Charge Chargers game,
You're like, well, that's the season. Yeah, and then they
come back and man, they were just smashing people their mouth.
Speaker 7 (15:57):
I think that, and I think that's what they got, honest,
that's the way they gotta play, very physical. And the
thing you got to realize is you just can't do
it every once in a while.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
You gotta be that every game.
Speaker 7 (16:10):
Because in his NFL teams, when they see you on
the schedule thirteenth, they hey, we don't want Justin Jefferson
scoring on us.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
We want to stop Justin Jefferson.
Speaker 7 (16:21):
And how we gonna stop Justin Jefferson by not letting
the quarterback throw the ball? And what I was watching
was that offensive line. Man, they were like Mike Tyson,
not they're hitting people in the mouth. Oh and I
like that, I mean I really like but our defense, hey,
they were in their face.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
They played behind the line way more than any other game.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
And I watched this.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
Movie one time with this it's called Barbie and his
active put that was on there. Their quarterback looked like
he was that actor like he was like cut can
we can.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
We just can we just this? Because he does kind
of look like grand guys. He does.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
It's his topp of ganger. He good for you golf.
Speaker 7 (17:07):
But you saw him, look he looked around like, I
don't know if I want this today.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
I think I want to just wait until next week.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
This is just they took his spirit man stop the
running gain and you can watch it from from from
the get go.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Running back to hey, first down, first down, Here we go.
Speaker 7 (17:32):
That's that showed me how we came out. I said,
you know what, this is a different game.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
John Randall is our guest here, we're hanging out to
hoppers in of course, what coney. We got more coming
up on the way here with Vikings Country, including the
five typically stupid Vikings Country questions.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
We'll get into that.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
I also want to talk a little bit about Lamar
Jackson and how he kind of reminds us of a
former Minnesota Vikings quarterback. And anytime that I have John
Randall with me on this show, I want to hear
stories because he has the absolute best. We'll get into
that coming up here next. Minnesota needed to go to
source that is for every high school sports. That's why
(18:15):
the Minnesota Startribune created a Strip Varsity. You can sign
up now. It's startrebune dot com slash strip Varsity. More
coming up on the way with Miller Lythe and Kate
f a n.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
It's time for Vikings Country. Get to know your favorite
Vikings players and legends. Vikings Country is brought to you
by Miller Lte, the official beer sponsor of your Minnesota Vikings.
Here's your host from the Fan Audio Network, Must Law.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Pick tell it Goos, Jared Gop Geric Wilson, Welcome.
Speaker 8 (18:52):
Home, my man.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
By fifty eighth to go on the third quarter. Jamier
gibbs In motions to the left as a receiver. Goff
nearly stack out to the right.
Speaker 8 (19:01):
Now he's stacked, taking down j Von Hargrave with his
first Saxon's week one shot gun takes the snap looks right,
helt to be stacked. Hey stacked again.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Jalen Rudman got him this time.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Snap spot blocked. Oh Isaiah Rogers.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
Picked it up.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Good luck stopping him.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
He's to the fifty to the forty and he's pushed
out of bounds at the twenty by Jack Box, the
punter who must be passed.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Welcome back Vikings Country. Hanging out here at Hoppers with
Miller Light and a bunch of great Minnesota Vikings fans.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
I'll dress it up in there purple.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
You know you can join Pa, Alex Lewis and more
Friday football fees coming up November seventh.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
It's gonna be a Buffalo Wild.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Wings in Elk River.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
You can go to Vikings dot com slash bww.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
For full schedule details.
Speaker 6 (19:56):
Johnny Randall is our guest hanging out here and John
before we got to this second segment here, which is
gonna be kind of a shorty because we had too
much fun in the front one and we're hanging out
all week. The salute the service. They can't wait. It's
gonna be so much fun.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (20:09):
But when you got a guy like Lamar Jackson MVP,
he's got a cannon of an arm. Yeah, he can
kill you with his legs. He sounds a lot like
a former teammate of yours. Yes, oh yeah, oh yeah,
there's got to be a good story there.
Speaker 7 (20:26):
Oh well, you know, when you got guys like that, man,
you you gotta you gotta.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
Appreciate how you you approach them.
Speaker 7 (20:32):
You can't just go out guns are blazing or just
going attacking them. You have to have Hey, guy, you
gotta tell your defensive n contain keep him in the pocket,
because you know those guys they want to get outside
so everything is control rushing. Everybody's phasing their lanes. Keep
one guy in the middle. Sometimes you even have a
(20:52):
guy that spies because you don't want them. You don't
want him making plays with his legs. You want to
try to keep him in the pocket. Tony Dungee used
to always tell us he's a quarterback. Let him play quarterback.
Don't have him trying to play running bat because we
don't want to be trying to keep up with this guy.
And so keep him in the pocket, and you let
you make him stay back there and and a lot
(21:14):
of time usually that quad.
Speaker 5 (21:16):
But he wants to run.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
So when you're doing things like that, you're really confusing
him and not allow him to run down the field.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
John, I really want to ask you like stupid questions
like the guy credited for inventing the frozen burrito and
talk about frozen TV dinners.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Yeah, aw, some of those were.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
But with a little time that we have left here,
King Henry Derick, Henry, that guy.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Is an absolute beast.
Speaker 6 (21:38):
You've played against guys that are absolute beasts, you know. Obviously,
Barry Sanders comes to mind. Thurman Thomas, your buddy, yes,
also comes to mind. Emmitt Smith, who's terrible at golf apparently.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Also he sucks again, How do you go.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
About taking out a guy like that, who could if
he gets to the second level hit twenty two miles
an hour and he's still what two hundred and fifty
sixty pounds.
Speaker 7 (22:03):
Yes, and he does little commercials too when we see
him talking about pushing things and pulling his supposed to
be living room and all that. But when you watch
him play though, the things that you have to take
away from his legs and when you watched because I've
watched him play over the years, everybody goes after his legs,
and that's where he doesn't want.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
He wants you to try.
Speaker 7 (22:23):
To stay high on him, but you go down low
and get his legs because a car without wheels is
not moving, a running back without his legs is not
going anywhere.
Speaker 6 (22:33):
Very nicely put okay, seriously, the TV dinners so the
frozen burrito genius, poor guy passed away. Yeah, we created
that growing up. You and I are like similar in age,
so we do remember having the TV trays? What where
you would actually bring them? Oh my god, you could
sit in front of the TV. Bruh, sitting there eating that.
(22:54):
Oh my god, get yourself a hunger man, whoa come
and banquet?
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Chicken chicken pop Pyes.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
You swore that was like a five star meal.
Speaker 7 (23:05):
Man, it was five star. Do you sit there, You're like,
oh my god, messing with it. You make sure your
chair was properly set up, and you sitting there with
a little wabble on the table in front of you.
And of course the movies back didn't want recorded, so
you had to make sure that you were ready for it. Man, Like, okay,
I gotta be ready for this meal. Oh my god,
