Now it's your turn. Vikings fan Line starts now. DearS
kf Hans, Ron Johnson, and Eric Nordquist.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Twenty seven to twenty four of the Vikings win at
Ford Field for the first time in half a decade,
and it was welcome back JJ McCarthy, who accounted for
a couple passing touchdowns and ran one in himself, one
of one hundred and forty two rushing yards. By the way,
there's time for stats, but it is Vikings fan Line
on'm nordo from nine to noon. Ron Johnson joining me

(00:59):
moment entarily whether it's your calls eight hundred three two
zero five three two six, Brad Shawn, Brian KFA and
text line at six four six eighty six, as well
as the free iHeartRadio app in the talkback machine. Hit
that microphone, give us up to your best thirty seconds.
We'll be firing those off as well. And but let's
jump back to Ford Field, because not just the offensive performance.

(01:21):
Some defenses good, bad and ugly we can pick our
way through. But how about a fumble recovery today from
Harrison Smith, who is back in Ford Field, back in
the locker room with our own Ben Lieber.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
All right, thanks a lot, guys, we're down here with
Harrison Smith and Harry heck of a game. I mean,
we saw you coming off the edge a lot, you know,
maybe more so than we've seen in some past games.
What was the what was the the pregame thought as
you guys went into practice versus the way that you
guys executed. Was it exactly what you thought? Or they
kind of throw some different things that year?

Speaker 4 (01:53):
I would you know, it's it's never exactly how you think.
But there's certain certain things and with my experience and
with our defenses kind of the way we play and
the way flow calls it, you know, there's some things
that if we see we like them, we can do
different things. And it's really it's really a game within

(02:13):
a game. Of adjusting on the fly and they're they're
gonna make some plays. How do you adjust? It's it's
that's that's the fun stuff for me.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
When it comes to the pre snap movements, it did
seem like you guys were much crisper, more in sync.
Whether you guys were bluff bailing, whether you guys were
blitzing from depth right out the snap. What goes into
that and how were you guys able to execute that
for four quarters?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
It's it's it can be different based on the opponent.
You know, what they like to do, who they like
on their team. But it's really you know, there's obviously
the play clock is involved, and you never want to
overdisguise and miss out on your assignment. So there's sometimes
your head can get a little like lost in it

(03:00):
if you're not used to it. Luckily, I've been doing
it for a long time, so it's a little Probably
the reps make it easier. But uh, that's that's the
fun stuff. Like I said, like, but you can't get
too carried away.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
I will say that when it comes to you guys
stop in the run, which you guys are fantastic today.
I know a lot of it starts up front. You're
part of that sometimes when you're when you're on the edge.
But what did you notice from our defensive front?

Speaker 2 (03:21):
What were they.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Doing today that maybe that we haven't seen in the
last couple of games, to get off these blocks and
make some plays.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
I think I think we're just letting them go, letting
them play their game.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
That's why they're here.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
They can make plays, they can beat beat one on
one matchups. It's as simple as like sometimes football is
as simple as just beating the guy across from you.
And when we can do that up front, it opens
up a lot for us. And you know, sometimes you
got to kind.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
Of figure out who you are.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
And I think we're we're trending in the right direction.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Who do you guys think you are at this point
in time? I mean a lot of people came in
and doubted you guys could come into Ford Field and
beat this team that is kind of poised to win
this division. A lot of people thought well of the
best in the NFC. So after a game like today,
when you guys are getting healthier across the board, McCarthy
comes out there and looks like he's he's the real deal.
What what does this game say about you, guys and

(04:12):
who are you?

Speaker 4 (04:13):
I think right now it says that there's a lot
of scrap to us, there's a lot of there's a
lot of attention to detail to us that maybe hasn't
shown up yet and is and it did today, and
it's can we continue to grow on that? And obviously
JJ coming in playing playing great, that's who he thought

(04:33):
he was, you know, and just getting him out there,
getting him healthy, it's a big deal. But more so,
like just speaking on the defense, like I said, I
think when when you have some turnovers, some change, you
got to figure out who you are. And I think
I think defensively we are and I think offensively we
are as well.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, I appreciate the time, man, heck of a game. Yeah,
you'll get those Ravens.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
As Harrison Smith with Ben Lieber down in the line,
I believe any minute now maybe we'll catch up with
Vikings right tackle Brian O'Neill. But that's for moments down
the road. This is for now. Ron Johnson in studio,
Vikings win twenty seven, twenty four. What you think of that?
How about winning in ford Field for the first time
in half a decade? How about the kid QB showing

(05:18):
up in some spots today.

Speaker 6 (05:20):
Ron, Yeah, it's about physicality, though it starts up front.
I think the defensive guys just kind of hit them
in the mouth. He saw a lot of those cross
dog blitzes where you know guys are doing their job.
There's no selfishness in that. The first guy through, You're not.
Your job is not to get to the quarterback unless
the running back just absolutely misses. But your job is
to put your face mask through his face mask and
say I got my guy coming behind me. And that's

(05:41):
what happened. Like you saw the next linebacker come through
those linebackers, and then in the offensive line, even like
Javon Hargray splitting the double teams, not just getting up
getting held saying okay, I'm gonna just let two guys
you know, hold me up here and create a lane
for the running back. They were getting through on runs,
they were tackling. There was not a lot of mistackles.
That's where a lot of the lion stuff comes from,

(06:01):
is yards after contact and the vikings were getting them down.
But that I think that's where it started. It started
with the physicality of that defense and JJ McCarthy played calm.
I mean not a big output three hundred You know,
people are like, oh, we need two hundred and fifty
yards three hundred yards, No, you don't. He did this
at Michigan if you give him a run game, if
you give him simple plays. And I told you this
last time we talked about this about the red zone

(06:23):
stuff that the Lions did and the lack of red
zone play calling. As far as it doesn't need to
be innovative, it doesn't need to be like, whoa did
you just see that play? You have the guy that
is going to be going down in history is probably
one of the best, if not the best receiver in
the NFL, justin Jefferson. You don't need to get tricky.
You got a big tight end that is over six
foot five, two hundred and fifty pounds. You don't have

(06:46):
to get tricky. Let him find a zone hole of
its zone. If it's man, he was gonna run with
that guy across in man and he's probably gonna throw
it up top and let a big, tall guy just
out jump a little guy. Yeah, that's the things that
I was hoping would happen in the red zone and
That's what happened. He didn't not make like it, none
of that Kevin O'Connell stuff that people.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Get mad at, like why is he getting so cute?
Why's he getting so triue? He didn't do that.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
He dialed up the perfect plays that looked like a
coach that set up every night and said, you know what,
let me come up with some easier plays and let
my young quarterback just be able to figure it out
right at the snap, Here's where I'm going, And you
could tell he knew right as the snap, whay to
go with the ball?

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Dan and Austin Dan, Welcome to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 7 (07:24):
Hello, guys, how's it going.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
It's going well.

Speaker 7 (07:28):
Yeah, you know, I've called in a few times lately,
just talking about how gutless the team has been this
year and really for about sixty years. With JJ McCarthy,
I think he gives us the opportunity to move from
a gutless organization to one with gumption. Harry was calling
it scrappy just now. You know, I don't know if
jjm is a good quarterback.

Speaker 8 (07:48):
Yet, but he has it.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
It's gumption.

Speaker 9 (07:51):
I love it.

Speaker 10 (07:52):
Thank you.

Speaker 7 (07:52):
I'll hang up and listen.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, thank you, you know, and I do want to
dig back into the defense because you and you were
hit on a few different points ron that I want
to revisit, but specifically with JJ McCarthy getting to see
him again and kind of okay. Through those two games,
we saw one quarter in which he manufactures three touchdown,
drives a lot of huh and in between right, and

(08:17):
then he hurts his ankle in the Falcons game. We
don't see him for a month and a half. But
things that I wanted to see today. I wanted to
see accuracy. I wanted to see better decision making. I
wanted to see him using his legs and in totality
the product. Like you said, you didn't need him to
go for two fifty. I mean he threw a missile
over Jefferson's head today, that interception with the nailer bit

(08:37):
and the review that's on him because he threw it
behind him. He threw it behind Naylor another time. He
was not perfect today by any means, but I actually
I can say that after not seeing him for a
month and a half, I thought he was better today
than where he left things at that point with the injury,
and he really impressed me. In an awful place to
come back from injury and try to win.

Speaker 6 (08:59):
Yeah, because I like, I liked how tom Brady broke
it down, because one tom Brady wasn't trying to predict
the future with every play. He was letting the play happen.
And then he was kind of giving us insight to
the head of a quarterback and he said, you know,
they talked about JJ McCarthy having a driver or a
three wood or whatever, and he's always he can throw that,
you know, deep ball, and he could throw the one
ball he could, but can you throw the nine iron?

(09:19):
Can you throw a pitching well? Can you do a
little touch? And he was he was talking us through that,
and one of the ones, the one you're talking about,
over just Jefferson's head. It was literally right at his fingertips,
which means and with tom Brady, if he puts his
hand maybe over the top of the ball just a
little bit more so that the nose of the ball
can dive down versus he had it underneath where it
was kind of like he's throwing it high down the
field a little further. So those are fundamental things that

(09:41):
he can fix that's not like just bad throws. That's
just fundamentals. In that moment, the game was moving fast.
He had to roll out, So a lot of that
is just slow the game down, get into the matrix.
Eventually it's gonna slow down for him where he's gonna
see a lineup guy or see a coverage. It's gonna
be like boom. I know what this looks like. He
hasn't had a lot of This is a third game, right,

(10:01):
he hasn't had a lot of like full speed game stuff.
So the fact is this is a third game and he's
making some of these throws. Yeah, one hundred percent some
of those are on there. And even the nailer went
to me, I still don't understand that rule. Because Naylor
had control of it and his knee hit the ground,
he's down to hear one hand he had one hand
is a catch like you don't have to if you
go down with one hand in your leg, that's control

(10:23):
and you're down. So his knee hit the ground, then
the dB yanks it out when he rolls over again.
I'm not arguing as an interception because he didn't have
full control over it, because does the leg keep it secure,
But because if that was in the end zone and
it doesn't move from his leg and he slides both
feet in and falls to the ground and never moves.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
It's a catch.

Speaker 6 (10:37):
So that's what I'm saying, Like, when you think about that,
it's it's the rule of it because just like if
one arm, you don't have to bring the second arm.
That's why a lot of the coaches say, like, don't
try to shift it. If you catch it one hand
or you basket catch it with one hand and you're falling,
just fall. Don't try to reposition the ball because once
it moves then they have to resay you gain control.
But again that's that's here nor there. If he throws
a better ball in front of him, it's an easy catch,

(10:59):
and maybe Naylor run for fifteen more yards because he
had them beat and he had separation. Yeah, but yeah,
I think I think JJ McCarthy look way better. I
will say last week we were like debating Max Brozman
and we were down on him. I gotta apologize to
Jay McCarthy, like, hey, Max, you're gonna be holding that
clipboard for us as year by jajo season because JJ
looks good and so it's recency biased, you know, can

(11:19):
he do this against the Ravens. Can he do this
the next week? Can he do it again the next week?
You know, like it has to be. And if it's
one hundred and forty five every week and he looks
like this and they win the game, I think everybody's
okay with that.

Speaker 10 (11:30):
Well.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Sadly through through eight games is the Vike's improved to
four and four? Now it's gonna be another week of
injury conversation, yep, because a big part of this win today,
a big part of putting it on a platter so
that the kid can be KIDQB can succeed the run game. Man,
I mean, how important was Aaron Jones today?

Speaker 11 (11:46):
Right?

Speaker 2 (11:46):
And it was a buck forty two on the ground
in totality, and I think nine rushes for like twelve yards,
very very immaterial in total from the QB. So very
instrumental was Aaron Jones, who apparently has kind of made
a career, whether it's here or it was in Green
Bay of just roasting the kitties. So we appreciate his work.
The shoulder thing and then maybe a toe so it's

(12:09):
something to watch there with McCarthy. He throws that ball
over Jefferson's head. But then he also throws that dime
to Addison nearside, going right to left, where it absolutely
required some of that touch and precision. And that's we're
gonna have to live with that, right you mentioned it's
his third career game, and it just stinks that we're

(12:30):
in we're on the back side of Halloween now early November,
and we're just finally now getting to see you know
that we get to revisit or resume the conversation of
living with the good and the bad and hoping for
more good than bad with JJ got a heck of
a lot more good today than we did bad.

Speaker 6 (12:46):
Yeah, And here's the funny thing is on Vikings Game
Day Live, I did the three minute drill and we
have four plays and in every situation when it's tough,
the Lions go man. And so you could tell Kevin
O'Connell did that. The Ravens beat him with the corner
route to the tight end. What did the Vikings do.
They ran the same corner route. They just switched it
up and it was Addison the Ravens or the the
Bengals beat him with a one on one kind of

(13:08):
either fade or it is going to be a pylon throw.
What did the Vikings do pilon throw to Justin Jefferson.
So Kevin O'Connell was a student this week, and he
did a great job of understanding, they're just gonna go, man,
They're not trying to trick me. They're not gonna do
these you know, exotic coverages. And if you happen to
get to which that was that red too on that
last one, just be patient and somebody has to get open.

(13:29):
And it was TJ. Howkinson, so it was and that
one was the the Travis Kelsey. When Travis Kelsey ran
that same route, all three Lions ran back to him
like they were Taylor Swift looking for their husband. And
Brown was wide open on the shallow So that was
the same exact roll out by Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
JJ McCarthy did it.

Speaker 6 (13:47):
It was the same look the lions this time they're like, oh, shoot,
last time we ran for the tight end. Let's go
find somebody else to leave open. And they left the
tight end open. So and again they always run after
the man. Like I don't think TJ. Howkinson is considered
the main in this. Travis Kelce was for the Chiefs,
and so I think That's what Kevin O'Connor knew too,
like they're going to run after the guy. They think
we're throwing it too. They didn't expect TJ. Hopkins to

(14:08):
be wide open in the back of the end zone.
So I just looked at the way JJ McCarthy did
it and the way he called these plays. It was
awesome because and I hope that this is what the
future looks like. Quicker throws hitches, slants, you know, the
quick throwout on the on the the all out blitz,
and he throws a tunnel screen to the running back.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
I mean, like it was.

Speaker 6 (14:25):
It was just beautiful to see it, like like manipulated
by motion shift. And then he's like, okay, here's the play.
And the only other thing, the only negative. And you
notice though today he was getting the line of scripts
about sixteen and seventeen seconds a day.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Oh yeah, it was.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
It was a lot. Quicker was a couple of times
he did come late and he's like clapping his hands
trying to tell this like, hey, I've got time, I
got time to give me the ball. So that's the
only negative. But I think they figured that out too well.
And also we'll see some communication bits. There were two
different run plays today where ohya, he went the wrong,
win he went the wrong but I think one so,
you know, I want to know more about the communication
angle because one Mason slapping his own chest is if

(14:59):
it was his fault, So it's definitely was if wet
Alfin's the line they went left.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Yeah, the whole the whole play was going the other
direction except for Jordan Mason. Some things to clean up.
But in the end, on third down and you have
to hit this throw to win the game. It's as
good a back shoulder to nailor as you're gonna find.
And that's it, and it's and it's ball game and
the Vikings win. Back to the phone lines here, let's
check in, Uh, what's what's Chan? What's happening in? Shan Hassen, Nate,

(15:24):
Nate and Shan Hassen. Welcome to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 12 (15:27):
Yeah, hey guys, happy to be here. Just a question
about our goal line packages. I'd love to see some
more ISO, you know, two tackles CJ Ham.

Speaker 10 (15:36):
I know he's out, but maybe a fullback in there.

Speaker 12 (15:39):
I want to see it simplified for JJ as he
gets to learn the offense.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Yeah, I appreciate that. That's one thing.

Speaker 6 (15:45):
I you know, Josh Oliver's out too, though, So among
all the among all the things to celebrate, I will
I will admit ron in a game where we're winning.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
After the after the blocked kick and Rogers gets caught
by the punter. I mean, that's a bad look. Really,
it's just this fox cat fast.

Speaker 6 (16:01):
But I was going to do with stop on the
breaks though, but then it breaks.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
I think there's a twelve yard run by Mason to
put to set it up its first and goal. He
runs on first down and then he does a roll
out to a pass, and then he does an option
it looks like to the far side as I'm watching
it on TV. Sadly, JJ gets knocked out of bounds
in the process, just maybe a little more is so
like he's talking about. I think there we might be

(16:27):
talking about a personnel issue because we don't have our
fullback or our big tight end or our biggest tight
end in this In that situation, I would have liked
to see another Mason. I would have put Jayleen Redmond
at full back because the situation. Put a bit of
defensive tackle it's fast, or put a linebacker in there.
We've seen people do that in the past. The Ravens
have done that. Williams out there, Yeah, he could probably

(16:47):
do that. Just put him at.

Speaker 6 (16:48):
Full back, say hey, go clean a lane like a snowplow,
and I think he'd be happy to do.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
He would love to do. Tell his family about it,
get the video copy, show it to his kids.

Speaker 6 (16:59):
Oh yeah, put him emotions, just go full speed and
just kill somebody.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
In that stage. Every tick of the clock is your friend,
and I would I would have preferred to see another play,
maybe run on the ground, Ben and Alaska, Ben, Welcome
to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 10 (17:15):
Hey, guys, I got some concerns. JJ didn't look particularly
sharks and maybe he just needs some this rhythm along
with the receivers who didn't get that for the last month.
But my question for you guys is we're about fifty
four million over the cap and we have a lot
of older players. We got Aaron Jones, we got Dan Ginkole.

(17:37):
You know what are we going to do with our
salary cap next year and how can we improve from there?
I do love this, love you guys. Keep up the
good work.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Take care, Hey, take care, Ben, and I appreciate you
calling in, and I'm not trying to stiff arm. You're right,
the money situation in twenty twenty six is is an
interesting one and a complicated one. After all that flexibility,
we've kind of well, I mean, it's in vogue now
in the NFL. You just keep pushing. We got, we
got dead cap years, we got all those things. I

(18:05):
am in no way prepared to talk about, well, we're
gonna do fifty four million dollars.

Speaker 6 (18:10):
Robertsinsky is is a wizard, though he's gonna he's gonna
get a bunch of veterans to restructure to fix that.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
I'm still trying. I'll be honest with you, Ben, I
haven't even figured out yet how we got five sacks
on Jared Goff today. So that's what I'm trying to
figure out at this moment.

Speaker 6 (18:25):
Bah Wilson, how about Eric Wilson, Eric Wilson, how about
Hargrave Terror?

Speaker 2 (18:29):
I didn't know Hargrave was still on the team. He
was a baller today and he certainly was. Jeff and
Black Duck. Jeff, Welcome to Maline, Hi, guys.

Speaker 13 (18:40):
Thanks for quick call.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Hey.

Speaker 13 (18:42):
First of all, I don't know if anybody is more
surprised than myself.

Speaker 6 (18:46):
But we beat them.

Speaker 13 (18:48):
But it was nice to see the defense finally stepping up.
My only disappointment on the defense so far this year
has been Jonathan Allen. I think I think they missed
Harrison Phillips way more. But and just to close, I
just want to say that I think the number one

(19:10):
spire of the game should be Miles Price, the puck returner.
He had a hell of a game, but thanks for
a call.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
No.

Speaker 6 (19:18):
I appreciate Tavierre Thomas owes him a dinner or something,
or a lobster like something.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
How brutal is that they just drive him, don't hold him.
The kick return is taking off the board ninety nine
yards clear hold by the way right.

Speaker 6 (19:33):
But if he drives them instead of stop his That's
why you don't stop your feet. Every special team's practice
they say go, go go, so your feet never should stop.
You should be just like even if you're just doing
the pity pat the minute you fill a little resistance,
then you could run with them. Tavi or Thomas stopped
his feet and the minute he felt a tug he
should have let go, but his feet he could not
do it. I mean in that slight little tug of

(19:54):
the arm, and yeah, I knew I made a mistake.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
Earlier in the game, when fear went down seven to nothing,
a Laporta carries like five defenders into the end zone
and I'm super sour Miles Price had there like that
fifty eight to fifty nine yard returnep. I knew I
made a mistake when I celebrated it a special team's
play without a penalty, I knew I made a mistake.
I knew it would bite us later in the game.

(20:18):
Tavier Thomas in negates the the one hundred yard kick
return touchdown, So that's an l team would ultimately punt,
by the way, and who was it, I believe on
the ensuing punt, which was a nice one, it went
out of bounds. I forget exactly where, but maybe inside
the twenty. Who's the guy that got knocked out of
bounds one of the gunners that refused to run back

(20:42):
inbounds and then was flagged for another fifteen yards? Was
that tavierre Thomas Again? Come on, man, unfreaking believable. With
these special teams penalties so stupid, so undisciplined, completely avoidable,
and here we are every single game. I mean that
basically Special teams Federalties basically got Kobe King waved because

(21:05):
all he could do was Special teams and just kept
getting penalized. Tavi or Thomas Man, I mean you owe,
you owe the entire special teams unit, but especially Miles
Price off the board.

Speaker 11 (21:17):
What do you what do you do?

Speaker 2 (21:18):
It is funny. I mean buy him on the fair
bracelet or something. What do you so on the fair catch?

Speaker 6 (21:23):
I think Tavi or Thomas, either Tavi or Thomas or
the receiver thirteen one. It was one of that ty
Felt It might have been Type Felt one of them
like ran over Miles Price, like was just too close.
Basically like if you know he fair called it and
he's saying, you know, get away, stop like run the
other way. They both almost hit the punt return of
Miles Price catches. It was that the one in traffic.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
It was in traffic. There was a there was a
lion pretty close.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
He was right over him, but he was he was
allowed to do that because a viking is still in
contact with him. So he had hit him, they would
have said this is on the Vikings for blocking all
the way through the punt returner. So even then I said, man,
you guys don't understand how special of a play that
is to make that catching traffic. And then you got
the other penalty, and then you got the ninety nine
yard or so I'm like, oh man, And so yeah,
Miles Price was heartbroken. He was absolutely heartbroken. But yeah,

(22:09):
he's got to get him a lobster, like a couple
little lobsters drop it off.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
To his doors. At this stage of the season, though,
what you can tell, and he's a rookie, hopefully many
many for Miles Price, Miles Price's sake, many many years
of NFL experience ahead of him. Couldn't you tell how
self aware he was though a games into the season,
Because he scores that touchdown, there's a little bit of
a celebration. Oh and then first thing he did is
he turned back looking for flags and he knew what
was coming. He knew it, he knew it. He oh,

(22:35):
just kneeled out at the ten. Don't even make yourself
run the extra.

Speaker 6 (22:39):
The only thing I would say about that hole too, though,
is like, that's that's again. It goes back to just
knowing the situation in that moment, because if he lets
him go a little bit sooner Miles Price still breaks
that arm tackle. He doesn't have enough body in front
of him to stop him. He might slow him down
a half a half a click, but Miles Price has
top end speed to get back to going full speed
because on that long fifty eight he got bumped and

(23:03):
the twenty five was right there with them from the Lions.
And then you just saw Miles Price hit another gear.
So he has that second gear. So again you're right.
Being a rookie, he has like Marcus Sherrill's type. If
he can stay healthy, you know, he could be that
kind of impact out and then we'll see him on
offensive visually.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
I'm sure Ron from Golden Valley a text message Nordo
and Ron the kid can play twice now in two
division road games. He has had his team up ten
with under three minutes left. How many Vikings quarterbacks can
say that? And he's essentially a rookie. He also rips
that cap caller, although I'm not mad about it. Ben,
let's look ahead to the cap. I just just not
right now, all right? We just beat the Lions at

(23:39):
Ford Field. We were like ten point underdogs. I think
it was nine or nine and a half by kickoff.
Let celebrate that a little bit. I think the kid
QB took a step today. I think we should be
celebrating it. Thank you, Ron and Golden Valley for the text.
Thank you for tuning into Vikings fan line twenty seven
to twenty four of the final. The Vikings win at
ford Field. I think since twenty twenty that's the last

(24:01):
time and certainly the first time that that Kevin O'Connell
has found his way to victory in Detroit. So we're
loving that. We're loving the four and four Vikings. What
a tone change from a Thursday night at so Far
to today after the ford Field game. We're going to
continue taking your calls. We got text and talkbacks in
the mix. Max Fuller's producing. We're gonna hear from Brian
O'Neil with Ben Lieber and Ron Johnson's here. I'm Nordo

(24:24):
Vikings fan Line. This is Minnesota Vikings Football.

Speaker 14 (24:28):
Your home for all things purple. He is in one
hundred point three ks A n the fan.

Speaker 15 (24:41):
Yeah, this is what I've been saying all year. You
gotta let the kid play, Let McCarthy play.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
Let's go find out what he's got. Now he's healthy.

Speaker 15 (24:50):
Let him get after it, and he showed some leadership skills.
He had a couple times I wish you to thrown
the ball away out of bounds, but over all he
did a heck of a job. Great job from the
defense skull Vikes from the two point eight I dig it.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
Thank you for the talkback free iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
The only thing that makes an unexpected win even more
delicious as a Packers loss.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
Oh, expect the worst vote for the best.

Speaker 13 (25:21):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
Yeah, Max. I don't know how closely you were watching
the Packers game, but I mean, was was Jordan Love
just a disaster today? I mean I see Rico Dowdle
celebrating in the end zone. That's not supposed to happen
at Lambeau.

Speaker 16 (25:37):
I mean I heard that the Packers were going to
be undefeated by the time that they faced the Minnesota Viking.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Someone on this very station set us such trap game,
Trap Game, trap game. Oddly enough, I think you can
listen to Packer Review. It's a podcast free iHeart Radio
app featuring Dave Sinnecon and Brett trap Game, Blake more.
You can listen to that episode and it should be informative,

(26:05):
and I believe we will have the Sultan a smug
Dave Sineken, host of Packer Preview review on the podcast
in the Zone, Absolutely adorse. Anybody loves the team that
I loathe. You can hear him in the Border Battle
tomorrow nine to noon. Let's check out another talk back here.

Speaker 7 (26:23):
Hey guys, Ben here, what a game that was.

Speaker 17 (26:25):
That was really entertaining, really awesome to see, really encouraging
overall for JJ McCarthy. I'd like to see him throw
a little bit more touch on the ball than it's
so much fastball all the time. But I thought a
little bit of that sure, and I think just over
time hopefully that just develops as he gets older. But
you gotta love the grit that he played with. And
it is also nice se Van Ginkel and Blake Cash

(26:46):
and both playing up at together defense look really nice
today too.

Speaker 11 (26:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
I appreciate the talkback. Many more to play, keep them coming.
Ron Johnson is here, I'm Nordo from nine to noon.
You heard Max and you heard the Vikings win twenty
seven to twenty four on these airways. Paul Pete and
Lieber another perfect game, so to speak, on the broadcast.
Appreciate them for that.

Speaker 18 (27:06):
Ron.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
In that talkback they mentioned Andrew Van Ginkel Andrew Van
Ginkle's return to the mix. It just felt in some ways,
you know, specifically maybe, I mean, if we want to
dig into it, we can just say, wow, Jamiir Gibbs
two point eight yards per carry today. Wow, sixty five
yards total rushing allowed by the Vikings defense. All in all,

(27:28):
what did you see, whether it's from Van Ginkle's return.
I thought he started to impact the game almost immediately.
He was kind of putting his stamp on things, the
way that Flores was kind of mixing and disguising blitzes
where he kept I mean, Ivan pace was used very
effectively today. Eric Wilson found his way into the backfield
cashman as well and mentioned on that talkback, but just
what did you see from the defense and then mix

(27:50):
in a little bit of Van Ginkle specifically. Yeah, it's
called do your job.

Speaker 6 (27:54):
You know, when Brian Flair at Flor's draw draws up
these zone dogs, these blitzes, all the stuff, do your job.
So whether it's Harrison Smith, don't leave too soon, it's
Josh Man, tell us make it look like it's cover four,
cover two or something. And then we're gonna sneak one
of the safeties down, Harrison Smith, if you're coming off
the edge, wait until you know, like make it look
like something else. And you saw one of the ones,

(28:15):
the one where he kind of knocked it down. I
think I tweeted the video, and I think I did.
I tweeted the video out of like Harrison Smith, and
I joked that Van Geek's probably saying, like, hey man,
I'd have been a pick six for me because Harrison
Smith had a beat on Golf and golf through it
and instead of trying to get to the quarterback, he's like,
let me time this up and knock it down. But
if you watch it pre snap, he's kind of Hollywood
in it. He's walking around, he's like standing around like

(28:35):
he's not gonna do anything, and he still comes the
next time he does the same exact thing, and then
he drops in the cover two. And so that's where
you kept Jared Golf on his toes or his heels,
where he's like, I don't know what's coming, And you
could tell at some point like that offensive line couldn't tell.
They didn't know if they were gonna twist. They didn't know,
So much coming off the end. But the best thing
I saw was when you look at David gibbson Montgomery.

(28:58):
If you're gonna rush pressure up the middle and you
need a running back that can pick up the blitz,
it's not Gibbs.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
He is not Jami.

Speaker 6 (29:04):
Gibbs is not a blitz.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
Did you see a play where Ivan Pace just knocked
Gibbs two yards back into Golf's lap.

Speaker 6 (29:10):
Yeah, and that's what I mean. So the Viks did
a great job of that because now the Lions are like, crap,
we got to put Montgomery out there, and so you
lose the big catch, big playability of Gibbs because they
have to keep Montgomery out there just in case the
Vikers and everybody's like, man, I wish floors would stop blitzing.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
I think what was it like sixty two percent.

Speaker 6 (29:27):
It was like a ridiculous number of pressures, and they
came after Jared Goff every single time. And but again
back to the zone dog with a twist, the two linebackers.
The first linebacker ran through that running back's face every time.
There was no backing down. There was no like we're
gonna get cute in ola and trying to make you
miss me. I'm gonna run through your face, and my
second guy is gonna beat your center and he's gonna

(29:49):
come next and get them. And that's what they were doing.
They were playing unselfish football. Nobody went after the ball
or sorry, went after the quarterback. If it wasn't their turn.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
To the phone lines, let's check it out. Vikings win
twenty seven, twenty four Richard and Burnsville. Richard, Welcome to
Vikings fan line.

Speaker 11 (30:06):
Hey, how do you can you guys?

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Hear me?

Speaker 5 (30:08):
Okay?

Speaker 2 (30:09):
Sound great? Richard, wonderful man.

Speaker 5 (30:12):
Man.

Speaker 19 (30:12):
You pointed out during the week the first adversity we
seen Kaiost really go through this season, and I also thought.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
You could put that with Bryan Flores.

Speaker 19 (30:22):
I mean, after the last game, the way we got
ran all over, I mean, the talk was, I mean,
what's going on.

Speaker 5 (30:27):
I just want to give a main shout out to
Brian Flores and the defense. They showed up.

Speaker 19 (30:31):
They showed out and if they weren't making those stops,
it would have been a much harder game.

Speaker 5 (30:36):
Jamie McCarthy looks wonderful, but a big shot up for
the defense. They played terrific. I'm really really excited. Let's
go baby before and four thank.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
You, Let's go absolutely and then Brian Flora is abone
to pick with the Lions. I mean, nobody's gotten him
like Ben Johnson's team has gotten him over the course
of time. Ben Johnson now in Chicago, of course, a
lot of the same personnel healthy Aiden Hutchinson who made
his made his stamp on the game. But Flora showed
up and he beat Golf Ivan in San Diego. Ivan,

(31:05):
Welcome to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 11 (31:08):
Hey, fellas, are we doing a wrong? First of all, Man,
you're my favorite Gopher. Go Gophers.

Speaker 6 (31:13):
Appreciate it.

Speaker 11 (31:14):
Oh was that that game at Ohio State when you
made that big catch in the corner One of the
greatest days of my life. But my question is, can
we get Miles Tyson balls on offense? Can we get
him in the slot? Chet sweeps screens, maybe a little
you know, maybe a little bit of a slot action
like Perscy Harvin. Why can't we get him involved that way?

Speaker 2 (31:34):
I appreciate the call, Appreciate the question. What do you think,
Ron Well?

Speaker 6 (31:38):
I just said that. I said, when we talked about
Miles pricing the kick return, I said, at some point
they're gonna have get him involved in the offense.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Can we can we just get him to you know,
have returns without flags.

Speaker 6 (31:46):
We could try that. That's the first step.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
That's the first step.

Speaker 6 (31:49):
Step number two is I mean we saw what was
a Addison on the jet sweep?

Speaker 1 (31:53):
Right?

Speaker 2 (31:53):
Great run?

Speaker 6 (31:54):
Yeah, maybe Miles Price breaks that, you know that. I
mean what Aiden Hutchinson was what like an ankle tack
away from from him?

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Scoring? Like the Price was actually faster than Addison.

Speaker 6 (32:04):
I think, so, Okay, I think so, I don't know,
maybe I'm wrong, I'm just not I'm not run.

Speaker 11 (32:10):
I think he is.

Speaker 6 (32:10):
I think he is because I asked Price that when
I interviewed him earlier during training camp, like who was
the fastest? He said was him? So I think because
I asked him about him and Jalen Naylor racing, and
I think he said him Price faster even than speeding.
I think that's what he feels. I don't know if
it's true Naylor to lose that nickname, but no, I
think like the caller is right, like, I mean, there's
no reason not to try a jet sweet. But the

(32:31):
problem here's a problem. You can't just put him in
for that, Like you have to then work him into
the offense period, like he has to be out there
to maybe run some some hitches, some slats, some clear outs,
maybe some deep goals and just hey, you're gonna take
the top off the defense or deep post if they're
paying attention, is justin Jefson over out, you're on the
deep post.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Feels like a twenty twenty six.

Speaker 6 (32:48):
Then there's saying there's a lot of miles to feed
on that offense right now, that it's gonna be tough
to get him in there. But you know, it always
helps every once in a while to have a gimmick
or two play for him if you're going to try it.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Bill and Iowa, Bill, welcome to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 20 (33:03):
Hey, thank you. I just wanted to talk a little
bit about and they had person goal yeah on the
two yard line.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Uh, just.

Speaker 20 (33:17):
The play where they ran out of bounds and do
an incomplete path. Yeah, I'm thinking they could have ran
another minute or two or you know, a minute minute
and twenty seconds off the clock kicked the field goal
went up my can and one that came down to
the great play from the McCarthy to New York to

(33:41):
win the game.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
That's all I'm saying, no, I appreciate the call, Bill,
I actually I agree with you. Yeah, in the in
the end, they end up kicking the field goal anyway,
if they would have ran the ball a couple of
times there. From a clock management standpoint, at the least,
maybe you're forcing Detroit to burn some timeouts which they
did not do, or you're you're finding your way yes,
with significantly less time on the clock. Duke in Iowa.

(34:04):
Let's stay down in Iowa. Duke, welcome to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 9 (34:09):
Yo yo, tell you what.

Speaker 21 (34:13):
How about the run d today? Yeah, we got our
defensive line finally producing. We got our offensive line healthy upfront,
our big boys are doing what they need to do,
and we're putting the effort in. If Ben Ginkle's back,
I don't know what. I don't know what it was,
but there was so much more effort today. Everybody worked

(34:34):
harder than normal today.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
It felt like, No, I appreciate the call meeting this.
This is a team when we've seen them lose games
round they don't meet the challenge physically. And and you
actually you came out of the gates. I think when
you when you jumped in the chair there immediately talking
about the physicality of the game, and I thought the
Vikings met the moment today when that's actually been a

(34:56):
significant problem at times now mistackles, I mean, my goodness,
I think there were two or three l's on one
play where Grenard he's gonna get Goff Goff, Shimmy's out
of the way, so he misses the sack, throws it
maybe to Montgomery far side behind the line of scrimmage.
Bira Murphy Jr. I don't know if there's time in
a busy week to just specifically practice open field tackling,

(35:20):
but Biron Murphy's had some issues with that this year.
He had an issue on that play. Montgomery finds his
way from a tackle for loss to moving the chains
into the red zone. So there are moments like that,
getting you know, Laporta carrying people into the end zone.
Mattelis has been found. It feels like on a two
regular a basis. THEO Jackson got nicked up today, but
specifically in the defensive front for a group that has

(35:42):
been moved a lot this year in the wrong direction.
Man they showed up to and Jalen Redman, we can
keep fawning over him and apparently week to week he's
just like, well, I'm just gonna keep doing this. Actually,
this is not a flash in the pan. I'm just
going to be a really freaking good player for this team.
And he did it again today.

Speaker 10 (35:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (35:58):
And the biggest thing is when you watch the number
of times i mean, it's not funny, but the number
of times there were timeouts and it was Lions players
on the ground. You know, like we've seen those games
where the Vikings defense or the Vikings offense is just
getting absolutely killed and you're like, man, who else is
gonna get hurt? Like it felt like that for the Lions.
I know they felt that way where it's like he's down. Now,
he's down, Now he's getting carted off, his eye got

(36:18):
poked out, like I mean, it was just the Vikings
defense was absolutely bringing like every piece of hat they
had and they were just wrapping up. But again, it
sets the tone early when like Eric Wilson runs through
a running back's face. It sets the tone, you know,
when Blake Cashman breaks through it and gets pressure, when
John death Grenard gets pressure, like we said, Hardgrave splitting
the double team getting to the running back early, not

(36:40):
just on the pass on the run, because that's where
everybody's questioning. They're like, oh, man, Harrison Phillips was a
great run stopper. We can't stop the run they were
getting through. And that again, I go back to Vikings
game day Live when we did sink or Seal and
everybody was all over, you know, the Lions scoring a
ton of points on the defense. I was the only
one said, no, they're gonna keep them under thirty. Everybody

(37:01):
else was on Jamiir Gibbs or uh, it's going to
be a you know, not a one score game. I
was the only one, the only one that said it's
gonna be close. It's gonna be a one score game.
So the fact that they were able to do that
to these two running backs, I mean, it just showed that.
And I was so happy when it like it was
still like seventeen points. I'm like, there's no way to
get over thirty one with this. It was almost close, though.
I was like, oh my god, are they going to

(37:23):
score at the end of this game and make it
thirty one or go, you know, go for two or
something so that the Vikings can't kick a field goal
to make it go over time or so. I mean,
it was just it was absolutely annoying.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
I mean, I'll be honest with you. I felt with
every bit of my soul. If they don't get that
third down there and we are punting, they're absolutely kicking
a field goal at the very minimum to tie it up,
to tie it up. Yeah, so I was hoping. I
was absolute shoulder though. Naylor though. The kid coming through though.
And that's part of a twenty seven to twenty four

(37:54):
Vikings victory at ford Field, first time they've won at
ford Field since twenty twenty, the twenty twenty season that is.
And getting some some stats and I haven't been able
to confirm them, but they are from my boss, Chad Abbotts,
so we just naturally trust that they are accurate. The
last win at Detroit I mentioned it to twenty twenty season.
It was a January twenty one game, thirty seven, thirty five.

(38:15):
It feels like a like a four TD game for
Kirk and maybe gosh, I think a couple of touchdowns
at the last time we saw Kyle Rudolph, last time
the Vikings held the Lions to under twenty eight points
in Detroit was a twenty seven to nine Romp in
December of twenty eighteen. So we've had trouble with that
offense for the last six seven years now, but we

(38:38):
found our way into the winner circle seven. What I
still don't understand what that is. Max likes it. Max
is laughing.

Speaker 6 (38:46):
I hope everybody driving listening is like, because you know
a lot of kids are listening. If they heard you
say six seven, six or seven times, like, oh, you
definitely got hit with the sea.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
So my kids are saying it, I don't. I'm just like,
all right, I don't. I don't get it, and then
I shrug and then they laugh. It's I can't win
with my kids sometimes. But the Vikings can win. How
about that? They can win at Ford Fields, massive underdogs,
and we're going to continue Vikings fan line phone calls
eight hundred three to two zero five three two six,
texts and talkbacks continue on. Eventually we're gonna get some

(39:15):
Vikings overtime as well, I believe with Saucy and Max Fuller,
so we're gonna get to that. It's a fun Sunday.
But the Gophers winning wild getting off the schneid Wolves
handling business and Charlotte and the Vikings winning at Ford Field.
Kind of a cool weekend, very different one.

Speaker 6 (39:30):
Uh, just saying to Michigan got dominated in football by
the State of Minnesota this weekend.

Speaker 9 (39:35):
Yes they did.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
Indeed did they.

Speaker 6 (39:36):
Michigan State walked in here and walked out with a
nail and took Vikings and leaving with a w.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
I let Detroit took a little more drama than it
needed to. Yester drama wins a win though. He gotta
get it absolutely, and we're going to return. This is
Vikings fan Line. Ron Johnson's here on Nordo, Max Fuller's here.
It's Vikings fan line. This is Minnesota Vikings Football. It's
the radio home of the Minnesota Fight.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
I had one hundred point three KFA, Minnesota's home for football.

Speaker 22 (40:09):
When you see a team face the adversity that our
team has faced, the injuries, the games that we have
lost them, the way we have lost them, the defense
not playing the way the defense has this has to
be exciting for all of us fans. JJ looked good.
JJ looked better. Their offense and defense had a huge

(40:30):
one eighty. This is a great turnaround. We got all
these division games.

Speaker 5 (40:34):
Let's go sweep it.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
Let's go Sco Viking Vikings two and zero in the division,
by the way, as they beat the Detroit Lions at
Ford Field twenty seven to twenty four. The final Lions
fall to five and three Vikings. Now four and four.
I think the Bears are five and three packers. I
don't know they got that weird tie and they don't

(40:55):
have it exactly in front of me. Maybe Max can
interrupt me in a couple seconds and tell me what
the Packs record is. Is it five five five one
with the tie? You lost to Carolina in your own building,
So just I mean, just think about that for a second.
To the talkback machine. Let's see here more talkbacks. And

(41:16):
we lost to the Falcons.

Speaker 23 (41:17):
One of my I thought was pretty darn good today.
A lot of people had written the mom he didn't
have great offensive line play for seven of those first
eight quarters that he played. Today the offensive line was
completely different, and we saw what JJ coun do. What

(41:39):
he's protected.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
Yeah, you know, I've I've talked about this, uh Ron,
I mean it's it's kind of and I say this
and then someone will snap back Lenny QB. You know,
if you protect him, he can make plays.

Speaker 11 (41:53):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
There were still issues I think and sometimes JJ was
sacked five times today and several and I'll go back
and I'll watch the game again, as I always do.
I'm assuming most of them are either a decision he
didn't make. I mean there was one where he was
I mean he basically just gave up at the goal

(42:13):
line somehow was not tackled, but then tried to beat
a linebacker to the corner if you're remembering what I'm
talking about here, and then ultimately is sacked instead of
throwing the ball away. Correct, he did that twice. You
lose four or five yards on that play, Hawkinson. By
the way, Hockinson get he got the touchdown? Love TJ Hawkinson.

(42:35):
That third down drop, Oh my goodness. And and by
the way, I don't even think it's a first down. No,
can we give Ryan right a little room? Correct? Is
that possible?

Speaker 11 (42:42):
Please?

Speaker 6 (42:43):
Our play maybe misses the tackle. It was only one
guy and.

Speaker 2 (42:47):
Missing a tackle.

Speaker 6 (42:50):
But to your point, though I tweeted, I'd literally tweeted.
I said, JJ McCarthy is young. He's gonna learn. Yeah,
when you break a tackle, once you get out of
the pocket, just heave it out of the mind. Shot,
Just go towards the yellow the orange flags that make
sure you get it in front of the line of
scrimmage and just heave it. You are out of the pocket.
There's no reason to try to break another tackle at

(43:10):
that point because then you still are, like I, manageable
and you don't take an ill advised sack.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
Bringing it around.

Speaker 6 (43:15):
Though.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
Overall, I mean him playing with the preferred offensive line correct,
so much better. Oh yeah, Donavan Jackson.

Speaker 6 (43:23):
I think again, as a first round pick, a lot
of people forget how good he really is. Like you,
The only thing I think we saw today was one hold,
which you can't put that on him. One he's blocking
eight and Hutchinson and he's keeping eight and Hutchinson at
bay Man. What about that kick today though? Oh the
legs wheep, Yeah, that was Cobra Kaie.

Speaker 2 (43:40):
I don't know. Yeah, but he went in with the
toe like it wasn't even. It wasn't even he went
in to go laces around him, which could potentially I mean,
he went in with the cleat. Yeah, I mean that's
let's come on, man, you guys used to be teammates.
Cobra kai Maybe none of that matters. Maybe loyalty, no
longer matters strike first, Yeah you don't, you don't.

Speaker 6 (43:59):
I don't care. If it is your friend, you know,
you take him out. But again I don't, you know.
I think it was just second nature for him when
he got because he was getting thrown a little bit
by our by our offensive lineman.

Speaker 2 (44:09):
So I think I was doing work.

Speaker 6 (44:10):
Yeah, his mind was just like, oh, I'm gonna just
flail my body and see what happens. And yeah, he got.
He couldn't, he could. He contacted the quarterback, but they're like, dude,
you can control your leg keep them on the ground.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
No, he's a good player, I think. So the one
here's what I'll say though, and it worked in our favor.
I hate the rule where if a defensive lineman batclesight
body weight thing, and I think that was Jack Campbell.
I just hate that rule.

Speaker 6 (44:33):
I will say, if you watch the video back, Jack
Campbell is like when he lands, he's on hands and knees,
like his chest doesn't land on Jajon McCarthy.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
I mean again, it's it's it's it's such a tough
thing where you almost have to stand on principle. Yeah,
even though it benefits you. I think that was a
terrible call. I hate that that exists.

Speaker 6 (44:50):
This was Lions fan line. We'd be screaming at the
rest cheated and they screwed us over and let me h,
the passing afferance at the end of the game.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
Was and called.

Speaker 6 (45:00):
I mean, now, I don't know if that was truly
a passing fair.

Speaker 2 (45:03):
Well, that's okay. So I want to get This is
from Matt in the text line the non call on
Williams's touchdown, and we were kind of arguing. I thought
it was flimsy, man. I didn't think it was as bad.
If you're if you're honest about it, you did that
a ton when you were playing, And I mean, he's
the arms straight straight, I get it, but but I

(45:24):
mean he wasn't he didn't knock the receiver over. I've
seen that so many times. I would even liken the
PI call on the tug, the tug of the jersey.
I think that was actually almost as egregious or as
impactful as Williams's push off, right, I.

Speaker 8 (45:42):
Think it was.

Speaker 2 (45:42):
I didn't think it was a big deal. No, I
didn't think it was bad.

Speaker 6 (45:44):
So the thing is a lot of times as a
receiver we reached back to just feel where the DV
is because you know the ball's in the air, and
then he pulls his arm away to go try to
make the catch. I think Isaiah Rodgers felt the resistance
of the arm touch. And then because because I heard
Ursus say trying to play it up a little bit,
I think so he said his head snapped back. I'm like,
I don't think it was a snapbag head type player

(46:05):
and beat. Oh yeah, and he kind of did the
like you know, but it was a little resistance that
he couldn't get through that arm. Again, Smack the arm
down like you're taught to when you're running. If you
feel that you can, you can knock his hand.

Speaker 2 (46:15):
Off of you.

Speaker 6 (46:16):
Okay, the receiver can't feel it, right, Yeah, you can
do this. You can knock it down, just like they
call it chicken fighting. The other guy can knock his
arm down, like if a DV does that to me,
I can knock his arm down and go catch the ball.
So that's not illegal to knock the arm down. It's
illegal to push whole grab. But I can knock your
arms off my chest, and you can knock my arms
off your shoulder. That's the only thing I would have
said Isaiah Rodgers should have done, But I don't think

(46:38):
that was like offensive passing appearance like that's It wasn't
a true like shove. It was just arms straight out.
I'm trying to feel where the receiver the DB's at
before I catch this ball, and I thought that's all
it was.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
Let's take a call, Jay and Coon Rapids. Jay, Welcome
to Vikings fan line. How's it going, boys, beautiful day.

Speaker 8 (46:58):
Good. I just wanted to say, at the end of
the day, the kid had ups and downs, but we're
going to expect that us winning games is always the
number one goal by him getting progression at the end
of the day, for everybody, Minnesota fans included to bag
on that kid for weeks and weeks and weeks, give

(47:19):
him time, Let Koc do what he needs to do,
and trust the process. At the end of the day,
we're the fans. He's a lot smarter than we are.
He knows what he's doing with the kid. Let Kate,
let JJ do what he needs to do, and at
the end of the day it'll all work out. Man, school, baby,
Let's go boys school. Thank you Jay.

Speaker 2 (47:39):
Yeah, you know the ups and downs of his game
today and so let's look. Let's just look at the
stat line here, Ron fourteen to twenty five buck forty
three had the two tds, had the one pick because
he threw it behind Naylor, and I forget who the
wide the defender was, but he ripped it out of there.
He was sacked five times. Gets the TD on the
ground as well. I'm just kind of all opinions are welcome,

(48:02):
but I get a couple of texts here, Like Kyle,
for instance, averaging one hundred and forty yards of passing
yards is not sustainable throughout a seventeen game season. I
respect JJ's talent, but how do we win without moving
the ball through the air. Mason can't carry this team
on his back. I simultaneously agree with you, Kyle, But
and then I got this other text, JJ fourteen to
twenty five hundred and forty three yards yawn, awful from

(48:24):
an NFL QB. I'm trying the it's his third game,
it's his third start in the NFL. The entire purpose
of this exercise, well, the very first purpose is to
win games. Vikings accomplish that check that box. But really,
at a grand scheme, this kid is not going to

(48:45):
go for three hundred and three every week until he
finds his way through games like this, until he finds
his way through games like Soldier Field opening Night where
he throws a pick six, just complete boneheaded throw right,
and we can, you know, justin Jeffers and can try
to take blame for the route or anything like that,
just like a boneheaded throw. And to Sean Wright, who
has no business getting pick sixes, gets a pick six.

(49:07):
He actually has to be on the freaking field getting reps,
playing games, winning games, losing games, making mistakes, building and
growing to get to a point where it's not one
hundred and forty three yards a game. And we're yawning
awful stats for an NFL QB like this is his
third game. What can we expect? I think a lot
of what we saw today for a top ten pick

(49:29):
is what we should expect. Some incredibly nice throws, incredibly accurate,
good decision making, inaccurate throws, took some sacks that he
shouldn't have taken, rose to the occasion in the moment
that he needed to dagger Naylor on a third down,
and we're walking out winners like I think that roller
coaster ride. If we can remind ourselves that it's just

(49:50):
his third game. Sadly, due to all these injuries, the
two injuries substantial as they were, I think we have
to remind ourselves of that that it is just his
third game.

Speaker 6 (49:59):
Yeah, no, he again the Fadu're oute to Justin Jefferson.
That's one percent touch, that's one hundred percent timing. That's
letting the ball when you're supposed to go. That's understanding
the call, and like, okay, this is where I'm going.
Like I said in the play breakdown we did. That
was the biggest thing, is like make that count count
to the left, how many dbs, how many receivers count
to the right, how many dbs? How many receivers? You

(50:20):
pick the best matchup when you see it the pick
six against the Bears, right, I talked about that one.
If he throws the corner route to Jalen Naylor, it's
a touchdown. He throws it across the field to an
out to the sticks, and the dB was just sitting
there like, look, I know you're going to just Jefferson
or Addison whoever it was at the stay. I think
it was jeff Jefferson at the sticks. Throw it to Naylor.

(50:43):
It's a touchdown. What does he do today? He throws
the deep corner route to Addison because he's like, look,
if I throw this out route, somebody's waiting because they
know it's one where the sticks are two. I'm rolling
out and this is probably my only two options. Take
the one on one down the field shot. And I
think that's what he's learned, is like, I don't always
have to take this short like, okay, throw I can

(51:05):
take the d ball, but I have to get rid
of the ball. And that's the other part of it.
You can't hold it and hope he's wide open. The
fate route, you can't throw it hoping he's wide open.
Throw it to a spot where he can make the play.
The fight route, throw it to a spot where he
can make the play. I think that's what we saw
in the arm talent that they were hoping that he has.
He has it now, it's he needs game reps and
he has one more week against the Ravens and he'll

(51:26):
have another week after that.

Speaker 2 (51:27):
You know, he just has to stay healthy. And I
think offense line has to stay healthy. Offensive line needs
to stay healthy. He needs to continue improving on getting
the ball out. There were a few moments today actually
where you saw him scan and you could almost feel
there was a frenetic pace to him, like, okay, I
got to get rid of it. He found Aaron Jones
over the middle early on in the game after going
through his progressions, and then he took some sacks, and

(51:50):
then he made some throws. Then he missed some throws,
and then he made one that counted and helped the
team win the game. The roller coaster is real, There's
no doubt about it. Trying to compare his stay his
stats today, I mean by the way, I mean, how
many drives was he starting? And he started I believe
at least two possessions in Lions territory, So we didn't

(52:10):
need and if we're running the ball effectively, we're going
to keep doing it. So give the kid a chance
to grow before we start leveling his stats against. What
are we watching, mahomes and and and mister Allen on
the on the TV in front of us. It's Vikings fanline.
We're going to continue on. I got some more talkbacks,
dialed up text messages. Vikings win twenty seven to twenty
four hand full. More segments from us, and then we're

(52:32):
going to toss the baton to meet Sauce and Max Fuller.
They're going to continue on via Vikings Overtime. Vikings now
four and four Ravens around the corner. But for now,
Ron Johnson and I continuing to take your takes from
today's game. This is Vikings Fan Line on Kfan and
the Minnesota Vikings Radio Network from Minnesota Sports the Leader.

(52:53):
Minnesota Sports Leader is FM one hundred point three.

Speaker 6 (52:57):
Day FXM ME at Saint Paul.

Speaker 11 (53:05):
Ayden Nordo.

Speaker 18 (53:06):
A Ron justin here from Iowa hit the cap to KOC.
He had some really good play designs. One was, you know,
Aaron Jones. Everybody goes right, but Aaron Jones left the streets,
down the sideline. He just had a couple. There was
one other one I can't remember him topping my head,

(53:27):
but had a couple of really creative play calls where
it's like, oh, last nice to see, yeah kind of
what you got.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
Yeah, I appreciate the talk back nineteen carries between Jones
and Mason for one hundred and fourteen yards. You also
add in the let me see here, up up up
Jordan Addison, who was a sixteen yards jet sweep JJ
nine carries mostly unproductive twelve yards, but he did have

(53:57):
Russian TD which was very productive and all part of it.
Twenty seven to twenty four Vikings victory at Ford Field today.
Vikings beat the Lions there for the first time since
the twenty twenty season, and it's the first time that
Kevin O'Connell has won in Detroit as well. So we
dig all that teams for and four Ron Johnson is
with me, Nordo, Ron, you were reading something from Tom Pelsaro.

(54:17):
So Aaron Jones the crux of that talkback how productive
he was today? Eight point seven a clip for him,
just the nine carries, but seventy eight total yards including
a thirty one yard burst. He also had a nice
catch and run for let me see here. I think
it was a fourteen yarder that he had as well,
but a couple of catches for Aaron Jones. So ninety
eight total yards of offense for him. However, there was

(54:39):
a shoulder what's up with the shoulder? Yeah, so Tom Pelisaro.

Speaker 6 (54:43):
So Tom Pelisero tweeted Vikings running back Aaron Jones, who's
been dominating early in Detroit before leaving the game suffered
an ac joint spring, but believes it's minor and he
believes he will play next week. Oh okay, so yeah,
I dig that. And the good thing is this no
Thursday night game, whereas now it's Thursday. To you know,
it's no short week the regular weeks. We gets five

(55:03):
five to six full days to rest it before he
has to get So I guess is all week he'll
be limited to no participant and then Saturday they'll you know,
ramp it up and see what he can do, and
then you know they'll.

Speaker 2 (55:14):
Have to make a decision limited, limited, full. That's what
we want to see for mister Jones talkback machine.

Speaker 24 (55:22):
I want to go back to that fourth quarter in
Chicago and McCarthy said to the team, is there anywhere
that you'd rather be? And you see today on his
face every play, win, loser, draw, he's got a smile
on his face. He plays the game with joy, and
I just think that that's infectious and it's really going

(55:42):
to help with this team.

Speaker 2 (55:44):
Yeah, I dig that. Thanks for the talkback.

Speaker 20 (55:47):
JJ.

Speaker 25 (55:48):
McCarthy made a lot of bad decisions today, damn, but
he also played really well. If this is the way
he's going to play the rest of his career, you know,
but yet clean up those mistakes.

Speaker 2 (56:02):
This is awesome. This is all he could ever asked for.
He did a great job today. Good for him, Yeah,
I appreciate it.

Speaker 9 (56:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (56:09):
Good for Vikings fans who wanted to have been waiting
to freaking see this and they finally got to see
it today.

Speaker 6 (56:15):
Hey, Ortal, Hey Nate, this game will change the whole
narrative of the Viking season.

Speaker 2 (56:20):
Have good day. It could now that you know that.
That's the toughest thing about this because at the Friday
Feast round, I'm kind of like, this is It feels
in some ways like an if not now when? And
the injuries have plagued the team, and just the problems
that they've had in certain areas certainly and help spend
the dominant talker, and it's frustrated in the end. You're
watching other teams succeed with injuries and you're just thinking, well, well,

(56:42):
why can't my team do some of that? And then
we're watching special teams, penalties, pre snap issues, the whole thing.
But it kind of felt, you know, like the dam
had to break, right because even in their previous three losses,
whether it was Philly, it was the Falcons, it was
the Steelers game that you're in those games you have
a chance to win. You just got to execute on
XYZ drive. Vikings weren't able to do it. They lose

(57:04):
those three games. There was nothing about there was no
chance in that game where the Vikings were in that game.
As soon as that pick six didn't go the right
way for US fourteen plays whatever it was, eighty some
yards touchdown, game was effectively over. Yeah, they mopped the
floor with you at so far. So it was just
kind of hoping that the damn breaks so fast forward

(57:28):
you get the baby by and now JJ Take two
twenty twenty five edition looks pretty good ups and downs
roller coaster as we mentioned, and you get to win.
Can this be a narrative changer because it kind of
feels like now you put you're at a crossroads where certainly,
if not now win, but now that you did it,
you can't be scared of Lamar and company coming into town.

(57:50):
Now you have to be game against figuring out the
beast that is Derrick Henry and figure out the enigmatic
way that Lamar Jackson plays the sport of football. Like
now you have to handle the Ravens at home, you
know what I mean? I mean, it's cool that you
won this game onto the next one as the NFL
season and calendar goes.

Speaker 6 (58:09):
Yeah, I mean when you think about the Ravens, you
look at this, I mean, the Dolphins are absolutely horrible.
So can you use this game as film study to
face the Ravens?

Speaker 11 (58:17):
See?

Speaker 2 (58:17):
Isn't that great the difference? So you get you get
waxed at so far by the Charger?

Speaker 1 (58:21):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (58:22):
Is there any better example this season of a team
that quit than what you watch from the Dolphins the
other night? Yeah, but that was embarrassingly bad. They do
not want to do anything for Mike McDaniel anymore. Yeah,
he's still coaching the team.

Speaker 6 (58:35):
Yeah, even the I mean the coach that went off
on the player that it was not even a penalty,
you know, the coach that the special teams play. He's
like yelling at the guy and then everybody played it
back and they're like, dude, he didn't even do anything.
The rest just screwed it up. And you look at this,
Derrick Henry one hundred nineteen yards. You look at Lamar
Jackson four touchdowns, right, A lot of it is Lamar's
ability to use his legs make you stand steel and

(58:55):
then he just drops it off. So again it's gonna
come down to man, they won our tight ends well,
Mike Andrews, Mark Andrews is so I mean, but for
Brian Flores, this is gonna be one of those games
where he's either gonna live or die by making this
quarterback uncomfortable because if you miss, you are done. Like
if you shoot your bullet and you you do not

(59:17):
get home to Lamar Jackson's response, you are done. And
that's that's the thing. If you know, I forgot what
movie it was, but it's like if you take a
shot at the King, you better not miss. Like if
you take a shot, you cannot miss Lamar Jackson. But
then you do have to stop the run with Derrick Henry.
And so when you saw today the physicality, that's what
it's gonna require. That's same put your face mask in
somebody else's face mask, that same. You know, gang tackle,

(59:39):
everybody hit the guy three to four times. You're gonna
have to make sure dere because Ryan Clark talked about that,
like what's the best way to stop Derick Henry? You
get to him before he gets to twenty miles an hour.
You got to get him in the hole, like you
cannot let him break through that line because then he's
a monster and it's hard to get him down. I
think that's what this Viking's team but it is. It
feels like a turning point. It feels like JJ McCarthy
does give that team hope, does give him that ability.

Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
Like the fact that he did that at the end
of that game.

Speaker 6 (01:00:03):
That's one of those are the de's gonna say, Man,
if we can just get this guy the ball back,
he can ice it for us, you know. And that's
the difference. And and I say, Carson Wentz, but maybe
he doesn't make that throw. Maybe, like you said, then
they have to punt. And then you're sitting back like
Jered Goff, please don't beat us into this game. And
that's what, you know, that's what everything everybody was thinking,
like it's not over to the clock says zero and
they finally got to it.

Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Well, here's the deal, Okay, you're totally right, first of all, excited,
and we're gonna pause and we're gonna say good night
to the Vikings Radio Network and continue Vikings Fan line
on the Flagship. You spend so much time quoting you know,
any given Sunday and Willie Beamon and you know Chris
Tucker movies like Rush Hour two, which it's all fantastic. Dude,
that was Omar and The Wire. You come at the

(01:00:44):
King you best now, miss Okay, The Wire, dude, one
of the great TV shows. Come on, dude, all right,
let's let's expand our horizons a bit. And we're gonna
do that during the break at this stage. If you're
on if you're on hold, we're gonna continue to take calls.
We're going to continue to take text and talkbacks Vikings
Fan Line can, but we are going to say goodnight

talkbacks and social message. This is Viking's fan Line with
Ron Johnson and KFA inns Eric Nordquist.

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
Twenty seven, twenty four, the final at Ford Field, the
Vikings victorious over the Detroit Lions. Man, it's been so
long since the Purple won in Detroit five years in
the end of the twenty twenty season the last time
the Vikings came home from Motown with a w, and
it felt good. It was needed, as the Vikings improved

(01:03:09):
a four and four, Lions falling to five and three
in a incredibly muddy NFC North. The Packers lost at
home to Carolina today. Bears had I mean, what I mean,
just a miracle spot. I don't know if you saw
that Ron Colston Loveland bouncing off of safety. Yeah, yeah,
and that's after the Flacco and the Bengals had gotten
the on side kicked. They the tackle, take the tackle,

(01:03:34):
but they're five and three and uh and the Packers
or five two. I mean, he's speaking of Michigan. Another
Michigan grid tight end from Michigan Loveland. You got JJ
McCarthy ball and now you got Agent Hudsd's a low
cry baby, but you know he'll get through it. Yeah,
he was.

Speaker 26 (01:03:47):
Actually did you see Connor Stallions tweet today at Connor Stallions, He's, uh,
you know what he's doing is he's fighting controversy by
just pushing forward as if it's not there.

Speaker 6 (01:03:59):
Well, because I tweeted about him and I just joked saying, like,
I wonder who he tried to help the most this
week eight and Hudgesson or JJ McCarthy with like footage
he had filmed with the Vikings and Lions, and then
he had the nerve And I mean it wasn't because
of me, but he just tweeted. So a couple of
people like sit in me his tweet like he actually
was saying that the Vikings, if they could keep him upright,
look how good your top ten pick quarterback can be.
It's like, also, Connor, you did help him by telling

(01:04:21):
him exactly what Ohio State was gonna line up in.
So let's relax on the tweets to.

Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
The talkback machine. Well, actually, let's do this. Let's jump
into the phone lines. A few short segments here of
fan line remaining before we passed the baton to Meat Sauce,
Paul Lambert, Max Fuller Vikings overtime right around the corner
around five point thirty, but Chris in Minneapolis Chris, Welcome
to Vikings fan line.

Speaker 9 (01:04:44):
Hey, gentlemen, how are we doing on good w today?

Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
Beautiful day?

Speaker 9 (01:04:48):
Awesome? I would say some kind of interesting to get
your guys thoughts on. I know the special team is
really outperformed way by than expectations, but how about us
stop in Montgomery and Gibbs, I mean kind of solid.
We looked a little a swiss chet the last few weeks.
But why did you think that maybe is a fluke
for going to next week? If kind of the rubber
beats the road for Lamar Jackson and Henry and if
with something of a continuation or maybe so much good

(01:05:12):
thing right now?

Speaker 2 (01:05:13):
Yeah, I appreciate the call, Chris. Yeah, shutting down and
shutting him down in a big way. Gibbs like two
point let me find it here, two point eight yards
per carry. Just had nine on the day for twenty
five yards. Montgomery mildly more effective eleven for forty including
a short rushing TD, but sixty five yards rushing total
for the Detroit Lions. And I believe that there was

(01:05:35):
some stab PA was thrown around last week somewhere in
the neighborhood. Let's call it like the last five or
six games because the Vikings had lost five in a
row to the Lions. It was something like they were
averaging a buck forty a game against against the Vikings.
They were running for a buck forty on our team,
and Gibbs, by all accounts a touch I mean, just
absolute whatever. Anytime TD, whatever prop there is out there

(01:05:56):
in Vegas or on an app, just run it up,
because he will score a touchdown against the Vikings, completely
neutralizing the run game today. And maybe if if you
want to reiterate in some ways, but I think it
goes down to what you were talking about early on
in fan line, just the physicality of this Vikings defense
meeting the moment.

Speaker 6 (01:06:13):
Yeah, I mean that's the thing about the Lions. I
mean Dan Campbell with the kneecap stuff and all that.
I mean, it was it was just a way to
tell people like, we're gonna be true blue collar guys.
We're gonna absolutely hit people in the mouth. We're gonna
play with aggression, We're gonna we're gonna try to bully you.
I mean, if you think about it, like they wanted
to play like the Eagles, Eagles offensive line when Jason
Kelsey was their same thing they were. It was bully football.
We're gonna run the ball down your throat. We're gonna push,

(01:06:35):
push until you stop it. We're gonna absolutely just be
in their defense with Brandon Graham and all those guys.
So the Lions had that and the Vikings today Brian
floor is again, I don't know if it's what he said.
I don't know if it's getting guys back, I don't
I don't know what it was, but you could tell
they had a mindset like you can see it with
Hargraves set in the temple. You can see what Eric
Wilson sat in the temple like. They had an absolute

(01:06:56):
like let's get after this guy and try to and
and even the some the deep passes, you know, they
were making the tackle and still hit those guys down
the field like it wasn't like let me just let
this guy laid out, Like no, I'm gonna hit you,
I'm gonna take your legs from under you. I'm gonna
do whatever I gotta do to make sure you know
I'm here. And I think that helped down the stretch
because Golf kind of like some of his throws, he
was second guess and if you should throw it here

(01:07:16):
if he should do this, and that was allowed on
the defensive line to get to him.

Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
Yeah, and you could just look at he was twenty
five at thirty seven, still pretty darn efficient for in
terms of passing overall, ye gets to two tds. But
he was sacked five times today, weirding completions. This is
a guy and I'm gonna scramble on the fly here
to do. I think he came into the game with
a seventy four ish percent completion percentage, which is I mean,

(01:07:45):
absolutely insane by his standards. And today twenty five at
thirty seven, what do we got here? He was sixty
while he's still sixty seven percent, I mean, that's still
pretty darn good. But he was sacked five times. He
was under siege a lot that forced you know, in
a day where maybe you're thinking, hey, Jamison Williams, let's
let's exploit what we've seen from the Viking secondary in

(01:08:06):
recent weeks. Let's try to push this ball downfield. No
chance really for explosions, explosives save for a couple of
moments that became explosive because of our lack of tackling.
No chance for him to really dominate this game in
totality in lieu of that rushing game. Terrific, terrific game
plan by Flores.

Speaker 6 (01:08:24):
Yeah, and that was the thing. Jamison Williams, jam or
Jamiir Gibbs, like they were home run hitters.

Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
We know that, you know.

Speaker 6 (01:08:31):
And I think the Lions offensive coordinator, again he's new,
doesn't have Ben Johnson, doesn't have the trick plays, you
don't have the gimmicky stuff. And he said, we have
to get Jamison Williams involved in his offense. We have
not done him a done him justice by the way
we're using him. But the problem is when you're a
new offensive coordinator, you're trying to figure it out, like
you're trying to figure out what is what is the
identity of my offense. I can't do what Ben Johnson did.

(01:08:53):
I'm not going to sit up here and try to
design all these play action trick plays and you know,
bring down Skipp her in eight to ten times. Again,
that's not my offense. And so he's trying to find
his way as well. But but it just it it
goes back to again, I think not being able to
keep Tamir Gibs on the field because the Vikings pass
Russ was absolutely demolishing them. That limited the amount of

(01:09:16):
ways they could use them. Like it was either like,
if we bring them in, we gotta run. But when
we got to pass, if they show a blitz where
the running back can't run out for a route, I
have to keep them in the game. And he's like,
he's not helping me. So he had to get him out.
And now you got Montgomery in the game, who's a
better blocker but not a better weapon down the field
with catching balls and getting loose, and I think that
limited his usage today. That that was the big key

(01:09:38):
for the Vikings is let's limit Gibbs because that's where
they they it's rocked, you know whatever, thunder Lightning, whatever
they want to call themselves, Sonic and Knuckles. Sonic and Knuckles, Yeah, right,
like they It's just he wasn't able to do that,
and I think that helped out. Now at then the
game they had the the you know, Williams got involved
in the game, but it was too little, too late,
which was great for the Vikings.

Speaker 27 (01:10:00):
Heard you mentioned, you know onto the next game. That's great,
you did it this time, Let's see you do it again.
I think there's nothing but confidence for the guys in
the locker room to be able to do that. After
today's performance, the defense did wonderful. A couple of bad
special teams penalties stopped it from being almost a blowout
of a game. But they should all be able to

(01:10:21):
look at JJ and say, yeah, this.

Speaker 5 (01:10:23):
Is our guy.

Speaker 27 (01:10:24):
We can rally behind this and we can win with this.

Speaker 11 (01:10:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:10:28):
Is there is there something to be said?

Speaker 11 (01:10:29):
Ron?

Speaker 2 (01:10:29):
I mean just from a confidence week to week. I mean,
you guys are all high end athletes in this locker room.
You don't need to be told that you're good at
what you do, but maybe sometimes you need to see
the result right, and you know the way, whether it's
you can take and make a mountain out of a
mole hill when it comes to like some online trash talk, right,
you know, a little chip on the shoulder and you
can make it a crevice. Similarly, can you build from

(01:10:51):
a game like today? You know, again the narrative changer
what I was talking about earlier, if not now, when
I mean going to Ford Field doing something like this.
You know that's obviously a confidence builder, but but it's
got to be something for some of these guys whether
it's hard grave you think about, you know JJ McCarthy
take two. You know some of these guys out there like,
oh yeah, that's right. I remember, I do play this

(01:11:14):
game at a high level, and to be able to
see the result so much more different than maybe just
even competing in this game, getting over the top and
finding the win and using that to move forward.

Speaker 12 (01:11:24):
Right.

Speaker 6 (01:11:24):
Yeah, so again one hundred and let's call it one
hundred and forty five hundred and fifty hundred and seventy,
like what they have to find the number for JJ
McCarthy and it becomes ballots. So if you watch when
he came to the line a couple of times too,
he was checking out of stuff, like he was trying
to get into the right you know calls he was
because you can hear him say stuff. You can hear
him come up to the line, you know, like I said,
he clapped like, hey, got to give me the ball.

(01:11:44):
I got to give the ball. I can't do anything else.
I can't change it. So that like allowing him to
come to the line of scrimmage with seventeen seconds not ten,
so that he has that seven to eight second window
to kind of make a quick change if he has to.
But you can even see him calling for the motion,
like Okay, I need you to motion now because I
got to give it to me. I need you to
I need to come down, Come down, come down, you know,
like he was. He was commanding the receivers to get
into their spot. And then I don't know if you

(01:12:05):
caught this Nordo, but somebody did something wrong, either the
coach was slow to get it to him or something
because he was yelling towards the sideline. And so either
the coach was wrong or player was wrong. And people
can say whatever they want, but it's not like a
bad thing. Guys argue and yell all the time. Payton
Manning and Jeff's Saturday got into a fight during the game,
you know what I mean, Like it happens, but I

(01:12:26):
love to see because sometimes rookie shrink and they're like, oh, man,
I'm not gonna say anything. He's a superstar, like he
messed up, or hey, this is my head coach. Man,
I'm not gonna know, like, hey, I need it. You
got to help me out here, tell me blah blah,
Like he was angry, And I think that's the other
side of that that's why those guys are willing to
play for him and willing to say like Jaj McCarthy
is learning everything he can learn, he's doing everything he
can do, and he's.

Speaker 2 (01:12:46):
Going to make sure we're in the right call. And
that's trust.

Speaker 6 (01:12:49):
Like I mean, you've heard it on miked up stuff
when Cam Newton made something and one of the guys said, like,
is that a call?

Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
You know, like, because that's what that happens, where a
guy yells.

Speaker 6 (01:12:58):
Something out and you're like, is that a call? Like
you're the defense was miked up and whatever happened with
the Lions, Blake Cashman yelled out, go for gopher, gopher.
I don't know what that is, but Blake Cashman came
free and got after the quarterback. So I don't know
what that call was. I don't know if it's, hey,
we're gonna put Blake Casper through a little hole like
a gopher. I don't know what it was, but you
could hear him yell out gopher, gopher, gopher whenever Jared
Goff changed to something. And so again that's the little

(01:13:19):
stuff that when a call is made and a player
makes that decision on the field, everybody else has to
know their job in that moment and trust that the
quarterback is doing what he's supposed to do, which Blake
Casher's the quarterback on the defense with the green dot,
you know, same thing, like, you have to trust that
person in that moment when he changes it. Hey, look,
do it, even if we don't believe it, do it.
And if it works, great. If it doesn't work, now
we can say, hey, man, you can't do that again.

(01:13:41):
That's what it's about. But I love that he was
angry enough to yell at his coaches and say, y'all,
are somebody messed up?

Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
Somebody messed up? That's Ron Johnson. I'm Noorda. A couple
segments left to go, it's Vikings fan line Vikings win
twenty seven, twenty four. Well, if you're a local Chevy
Dealers driving the game, next, it's Vikings fan line on
the fan and welcome back Vikings fan line. It is

(01:14:07):
time for our local Chevy Dealers drive of the game,
brought to you by your local Chevy Dealers. And well,
what am I going to pick? I mean, you let
Laporta do what he did on that opening drive for
the kiddies, and you respond after a sweet Miles Price
kick return with a five play thirty six yard TD.
I did that, But actually what I'm gonna go with

(01:14:28):
is after the ensuing Lions possession in the first quarter
where they go three and out, the Vikings put the
pressure on Detroit with a seven play sixty four yard
drive that ended with.

Speaker 28 (01:14:40):
This first and goal from the seven McCarthy out of
the shotgun Jefferson in motion to the left. They take
a hand off to JJ and McCarthy rolls up to
the right fires to the end zone touchdown. Former Lion
Jay Hockinson catches that side arm fastball from JJ McCarthy

(01:15:00):
and the Minnesota Vikings have taken up thirteen seven lead.

Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
Just two catches and eleven yards on the day for Hawkinson,
but seven of those yards went for that score that
you heard there. It was JJ. He's rolling outside and
you know, kid throws a bit on the run and
can be inaccurate on the run, but he threw a
freaking dart across the body. I know some bad memories
among Vikings fans regarding that, but this one worked. It
was a dart to number eighty seven, and hey, Hawkinson

(01:15:27):
caught it. What a revelation that was, and that put
the Vikings up fourteen to seven in the first quarter,
all part of a twenty seven twenty four victory for
the Minnesota Vikings. The play of the play of JJ
McCarthy overall in the day growth fourteen to twenty five
of buck forty three two tds had the pick. Was

(01:15:50):
there a particular moment putting you on the spot run
before we pause again that where you said JJ gets it,
JJ took a step today. Was there one particular moment
or action?

Speaker 6 (01:16:02):
Yeah, the throw is Justin Jefferson, like I mean, honestly,
like the red Zone tist of Red Zone TV, just
like eighteen's that guy. And exactly because it was no hesitation,
he understood what the coverage was. He had one on
one And again, think about some of the throws last
year we complained about in the red zone geinst the Lions.
We were like, man, if Sam Donald just throws it here,
Sam Donald just does this, Man, that's a touchdown. You

(01:16:23):
got Justin Jefferson. How do you not give Justin Jefferson
the chance to make a play. He gave Justin Jeffson
the chance to make a play and he made it,
Like that's I think that's the step for me where
I was like, this kid can do it, he just
has to have more opportunities.

Speaker 2 (01:16:35):
And this is only his third game.

Speaker 6 (01:16:36):
We have to remember that like this, if this were
week three, we would have a totally different feeling. We'd
be like, man, look at the first three weeks of
the season for this kid, like he's doing great. If
he what won two out of three in the first week,
first three games of his career.

Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Like we would be celebrating.

Speaker 6 (01:16:51):
And so that's the way we kind of need to
look at it because these other Sam Donald or sorry,
Carson Wentz games in between, those aren't JJ McCarthy moments.
This is the JJ McCarthy experience with being able to
run the ball RPO you know, zone read where he
keeps it gets you a first down, you know, that's
the stuff he gets you a touchdown on a I
mean basically it was a play action.

Speaker 2 (01:17:13):
Hey, if it's not there, keep it and go.

Speaker 6 (01:17:15):
That's what Kevin O'Connor knew he had in this kid,
but he just couldn't do it, and so he had
to pivot and transition with with Carson Wentz mid season
and say, okay, I gotta get rid of some of
this stuff. I don't have it. But the same side
arm throw Carson Wentz tried to throw on the tunnel,
you know, the tunnel throw and he throws into the dirt.
JJ McCarthy sees the pressure, throws it and what happens,
big play on the blitz like it. It's those are

(01:17:36):
the things for me. That was the other one for
me too, the blitz in his face and he knows
the blitz is coming. He's like, I just got it
one more second. I got to hold it because if
I can get it to I think it was Aaron Jones,
there's no screen. Yeah, it's like, if I can get
it to Aaron Jones, nobody else is over there. This
is gonna be a big play. Like those are the
things for me, where it's like, you know you're gonna
take a hit. You know a guy's coming, Let me
sit in here and throw it.

Speaker 2 (01:17:56):
And yeah, it was.

Speaker 6 (01:17:57):
It was kind of cool to see those moments. But again,
you look at the stat line, you're not going to
fall in love with it. But he got the w
nothing and like you said, the last play of the game,
he iced the game. Absolutely. That's Ron Johnson im Nordo.
Final segment of fan lines around the corner. We're gonna
bring meat, sauce.

Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Paul Lambert in you little cross talk before we hand
things off to Vikings over time. Thank you to our
local Chevy dealers for providing the drive of the game.
Twenty seven to twenty four, Vikings victorious at Ford Field again.
Final segment is next Burton section the Vikings twelve. Snap gown.

Speaker 28 (01:18:42):
It goes Jared GoF you freaked, Eric Wilson, Welcome home.

Speaker 13 (01:18:48):
My man.

Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Hold out a second, I gotta play it again. Burton
sectionween the Vikings twelve. You freak down, Snap gow.

Speaker 13 (01:18:58):
Down.

Speaker 28 (01:18:58):
It goes Jared Yeah, Eric Wilson, Welcome home, my man.
The Redfordon, Michigan native has two sacks and just buried
number sixteen.

Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
Oh how good? How good was that the host was
feeling it today? The host of nine to Noon that
is the voice of the Minnesota Vikings, Paul Allen one
of five sacks Vikings defense put on Jared Goff. Final segment.
I mean we're gonna We're gonna make it a quickie
and get out of here so that Saucy and Max
Fuller can take over. But Saucy, would you think, man,
I mean, I thought it was great.

Speaker 16 (01:19:31):
I thought that first fourth down play where they got
who's their great tight end? Sand Laporta reported down the
scene and he just kind of rumbled into the end zone.
It looked like a like a fifth grade play where
you just throw it up to your best player and
just let him.

Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
Make the play. Yeah, Matellus was trying to punch the ball.

Speaker 6 (01:19:47):
Love by the way, I thought that just half of
the freaking guy, the guy that he was trying to
punch the ball.

Speaker 16 (01:19:51):
But I thought it was on that that point, I'm like,
oh boy, it's gonna be a tough And then the
kid punched back. That's all we've been asking for, is
the kid to punch back. There were some plays he
wasn't perfect, but he did what we needed him to
do with that. That passed to Naylor at the end
of the game was outstanding, terrific. That was such a
ball's play like and it shows how much the coach
has in him. They needed that win, man, because then

(01:20:14):
like you lose that game with the kid at quarterback,
it looked kind of dicey.

Speaker 2 (01:20:19):
But they got the ball.

Speaker 16 (01:20:20):
They did, they got what they needed the pass on
third and four to get the game winner. Outstanding, they
needed that win.

Speaker 2 (01:20:27):
Yeah, I'll ask both of you this and then and
then we'll we'll we'll we'll, we'll end it and you
can take over, Saucy. But the difference between just hanging
in this game, the difference between Okay, so McCarthy goes
out or a three and four team. Everything's gone haywire.
Everybody's hurt and people are getting healthy, but the thing
just doesn't look good. We got our asses kicked it
so far. Hang in this game was kind of just

(01:20:49):
let's see what the kid can do, right, I mean,
it's just there's such a massive difference now where the
kid did make his mistakes.

Speaker 16 (01:20:56):
He overthrew a couple behind, kept calling it his one
like he was. He kept hitting the driver. They were
using golf references on TV about it. He kept just
hitting the driver. You know what Tom Brady's been doing
when he needed a pitching wedge and just lobbing in there.

Speaker 6 (01:21:10):
And there were a couple like that.

Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
But it's such it's such a massive difference now, Saucy, Like,
can you feel that where it's like you get out
of here with a w your kid made some mistakes,
but he also showed that he's grown since we lost
him in the Falcons game. Like this is this is
this is a potential changing wave, a tide turner if
you will, Yeah it is. We gotta see consistency though.

Speaker 16 (01:21:31):
We got to see him next week to get at
home against a I mean, the Ravens defense isn't great,
but they have the pieces right and we got to
see what they can do.

Speaker 2 (01:21:40):
I don't know what the line is yet for that game.

Speaker 16 (01:21:42):
I saw like four and a half like a week ago,
but I would bet it has changed since the Vikings won.
And we saw the offensive line play they played probably
their best game, and the defensive line pressure that they
needed after we lost that game in January last year
and they looked off up the middle, and they on
both sides of the ball up the middle, they were

(01:22:04):
bad on both sides. They look great today. That's one
of the better games the defensive has played. Van Gigle
is such a big difference, and Grenard is one hundred
percent on every play. He jumped off sides on that
one that kind of sucked, but still they got the victory. Hey,
thank you, Yeah, thank you. It's good to see you,
and now you have to do you have to sit
in my chair.

Speaker 2 (01:22:24):
Can't wait? That sounds good. That's it for Vikings fan Line.
Vikings win twenty seven to twenty four. Big thanks to
Ron Johnson. As always. You heard Ben Lieber with Harrison
Smith and you might hear I don't know if they'll
be able to play it for you, but Brian O'Neil
was with Ben Lieber. You're gonna get to hear that
with Saucy and Max Fuller next but as the Vikings

(01:22:44):
improve to four and four, next up, indeed a week
from today another nooner. How about this? Multiple noon games?
Weird home games? This is odd. The Vikings are four
and a half point dogs as of this moment to
the Ravens. But it's a noon kickoff ten am. Pregame
begins on the flagship Vikings Audio Network joins us at eleven.
The boom is at noon and the Vikings let's see
that consistency. Next step for JJ a week from today

(01:23:07):
at US Bank Stadium against them Birds. For Ron Johnson,
I'm Eric Nordquist. This has been Vikings fan Line on
the kfa N Minnesota Vikings Audio Network. Vikings Overtime is
next with meat sauce. Paul Lambert and Max Fuller enjoy
your Sunday evening. Thanks for listening to the fan

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
