We just aired a previous segment.

We were airing the press conference from Kevin O'Connell, not
the entire thing, but a nice portion of it, and
there was a lot of conversation around potential cadence and
on a couple of the false starts, we had some
motion moving so in the end though, I mean Justin
Jefferson had one.

I think three or four of the old linemen had
a false start. Today.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
JJ McCarthy himself, I believe, was responsible for two.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
How on earth does that take place?

Speaker 6 (02:34):
Well, I mean there's a number of reasons, So I'm
not going to get into some of the basic ones,
which is just undisciplined, you know, no discipline, not paying
attention to whatever the call is, not paying attention to
the cadence.

Well, I think that's the theme of this some entire operation.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
Right.

Speaker 6 (02:48):
Yeah, some people can say, like, oh, well his caten's changed,
you know, if it's hot hut or hut hut, So
that is different, you know, like is he changing the cadence?
That's gonna between him and Kevin O'Connell. Honestly, they're gonna
watch it back. They're gonna listen back to whatever they
can hear. You know, he's gonna go over with them.
But like that's the like day one of training camp
when you have a new quarterback is what is your

cadence and let your guys hear it, you know, cause
and then if you if whatever yours is, maybe max
you have to do it similar So when Max Brosmer
is in it's no different for the offensive line, and
so the number one guy sets it like whatever it is.
Was this hut hut or is it hut hut? Like
whatever that is, that's what it has to be too. Again,
if you're an up temple offense or something like that.

And it's on first sound when he went can camp.
As soon as he touched his helmet, TJ or TJ.
Howkinson and Derisol took off to the left. So it
tells me they were thinking, Okay, we're going fast. We're
trying to outmaneuver them. We're trying to out leverage them.
So the line can't, you know, stunt or shift or move.
We like it's lined up and looks good, let's go.

McCarthy on the other hand, was looking at maybe the
center and said, I don't think he can reach the
d tackle, So I'm gonna can this. Well, you probably
want to say, e's easy, slow it down. Then let
them know. Now again, I'm just saying from what I'm
used to. I don't know if they have a different
way of doing it. But that's why, like you see
a lot of quarterbacks do the leg thing. That's just
letting the center in the offensive line know I'm ready

for the ball.

Now, that's what that is.

Speaker 6 (04:14):
And you'll see some guys do it like three or
four times because then the huddle we say he it's
on the fourth leg. So the first two or three
legs is nothing. That fourth one, Okay, now I'm ready.
And because what you don't want to do is you
don't want the defensive line of to figure out Okay,
every time he does one leg, he's snapping the ball.
So all that little stuff. Again, it's it's high level,
but it's simple. And so again that just like how

it's right. How focused were some of those guys in
those moments. And then honestly, like I hate to use PJ.
Fleck on this, but you know you've heard them talk
about that about penals. Ye, sometimes it comes down to
guys not paying attention. Like I mean, you know, you
can give every reason mistake possible. Sometimes guys just make
a mistake. It's part of the game. But eight is
way too many. Eight's embarrassing.

Eight is going back to the beginning of your thought,
they're undisciplined of discipline for a team, by the way,
that was horribly pedalized early in the season, felt like
it had kind of leveled out, and the pre snap
penalties at one point kind of part of their issues.

I think the Vikings they should have won this game.
The defense they played pretty well and given up twenty
seven points for the betters out there. Lamar Jackson, he's
if he plays and they win. They scored twenty seven
points or more in his last sixteen wins. But I
think something that set out was just a batted down

balls at the line of scrimmage. So ron I would
like to ask you, like, is that just you defensive
play or is that have something to do with JJ
McCarthy staring down receivers.

The Ravens came into this game with just eleven sacks,
so clearly you know part of their idea, especially since
they're just rolling with four all the time, and they
sent they sent Kyle Hamilton a number of times, so
they might send an extra rusher, but really just a
four men front in lieu of getting to the QB
on a regular basis. Get your hands up right right,
But then JJ McCarthy has to adapt to that, and

at times he did not today correct.

Yeah, So the one I'm thinking of is Jordan Nison.
Was it was going into the end zone. The Asdon
had like a shallow route or underneath route, and looks
like McCarthy tried to sod like his arm was low,
so he was trying to like get it in there.
I'm glad he didn't actually make the play because Roquan
Smith was standing right there, like I don't know if
he saw him. And so that's where you kind of

like wonder, like did you even see the linebacker? Like who,
I know, you know Addison's coming, I know you see
nobody's out there, but you're missing zero. He's right there. Yeah,
And so when he got knocked down, we all looked up.
We're like, oh were they kind of worked out? Like
I'm glad you cause that would have been a pick
six probably. I mean McCarthy chasing down a linebacker maybe

makes the tackle.

But one.

Yeah, I don't think the staring down is a problem.
I just think it's the like the arm angle, Like
if you know you're looking here, you know, you gotta
know Okay, I gotta throw it over this guy or
I got a pump without for no reason, just I'm
pumping to make this guy go up, and then I'm
gonna throw it like watch ta mar Jackson.

You watched him like he does that.

He'll do like the fake little pump and then he
throws it because he knows I want to get you
off balance. So you don't know when I'm gonna throw
the ball the other thing, and I'm not telling him
to start doing this. Patrick Mahomes. You know we've seen
Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes.

The no look like.

Part of it is you don't want to look at
the receiver you're throwing it. Two you know you're about
to throw this here look over here. And then it's
not truly a no look like. Everybody's like, oh he's
a magician. No, he's looking at him out the corner
of his eye.

Head to kind of make it look like he's looking here.
And you know, I'm doing this for Nordal people at
the home in the radio. You can't see what I'm doing,
but I'm doing some elite no look throws peripheral, peripheral,
So you just got to use that peripheral vision where
you're kind of like you're looking, but your head kind
of tilts to the left, and then that just makes
the guy think like, oh, he's not throwing it here, sure,
and then.

You throw it quick.

So again, this is like we keep acting like this
is a two year veteran. This is a kid that's
played in five football games in the NFL. You know,
he this is stuff that comes with learning timing, seeing it.
So these are just growing pains of a young quarterback.
It is what it is like. You know, he threw
for almost two hundred and fifty yards, which two undred
fifty yards was our sinker sailed to day, kind of
pissed off.

He's two forty eight, so I guess you sailed it.

I did sail it. I was hoping he's gonna go
for two fifty one HAWKINSI should have just reached out,
just reach out. That's that's two more yards right there.
He just fell to the ground, like, reach out, get
get a couple of more yards?

accurately hit receivers on our regular There was some guys
four We started trying to get him to do the
no looks, Ron Like, I want him to hit the

on our team. Man, there's a lot that went wrong today.
We got to acknowledge some real studs. We got a
real star development and Jalen Redman up on my d line.
He's really the strongest kind of stirring the drink.

Yeah, Josh, I couldn't agree with you more. I appreciate
the phone call, man. Jalen Redman with eight tackles today,
only behind Blake Cashman in his eleven. Jalen was all
over the place and the I mean, in the end,
I'm trying to it was the it was that field
goal drive shortly before half. No, it was the well
what should have been I believe the it would have

been the second field goal they kicked before we quickly
went three and out, took like thirty seconds off the clock,
and then they drove down and kicked another one. They
figured out how to run and for a while, for
a while that looked worrisome. But overall in the day,
if you're gonna say, hey, I'm I'm I'm letting Henry
get three point a to carry, you know what I mean?
And Lamar Lamar actually has kind of taken some of

the running back, maybe specifically because of the injury, and
he's missed some games obviously, but he gets to thirty
six on the ground through some scrambling I thought, Jalen Redmond,
I mean not only all effort, all energy, but he
was all over the place, first to the ball, kind
of leading the gang tackling, if that makes sense. Jalen
Redman just continuing to impress.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
Yeah, and he shoots the gap pretty fast and he's
does a great job of wrapping up. We see so
many guys get in there and then they missed that
tackle and they come out on the back end. But yeah,
I mean he's been playing well. I think we said
it like weeks ago, like he's been playing well all season.
Like he's been a bright surprise, which is probably one
of the reasons why they kept him and got rid
of some guys, you know, or traded Harrison Phillips. You know,
I think they saw what they had in this kid,

and yeah, I think he's going to be a hopefully
be a good piece of defense for a while.

Hey, thanks for having me. Yeah, I have several points
to make a starting with undisciplined, unprepared, out coached, outplayed
in basically all phases. Then let's get to Mattelas and
Murphy big contract extensions and to me, up to this

(11:16):
point in the season, that's all they're doing is collecting
their paycheck. Mattellus is horrible in coverage, and he does
not want to tackle the big boys, starting with tight end,
going back to Gadsden, Henry, you name it. He doesn't
want to wrap, he doesn't want to have much to

(11:37):
do with any of them. Murphy, after the stellar season
he had last year, where is he? I mean, I
see him, but I don't see him making any kind
of a big difference like as he should. And O'Connell,
my goodness, third and one and you have to get greedy.
You can't pick up a first down on a running

(11:58):
play that's through Dick And then after the game to
hear him say the same old thing every time after
every one of our losses and sometimes even after a
couple of our wins. It's a broken record. And McCarthy

(12:19):
those tip balls, as far as I could tell, mostly
sidearm passes, when do you throw over the top. And
then on one of our last drives when he gets sacked,
he stepped up into the pocket instead of going outside
where he could have run for the first down. But

other than that, that's pretty much it.

From a coverage standpoint, Murphy, I'm not necessarily There's a
couple of things going on here. Murphy has not had
the same impactful season by any stretch of the imagination,
that he had a.

Year ago, So I'm not necessarily mad.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
There's really not a lot that I can Overall, I
can't really disagree with much of what Charlie Howard said there.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
But the tough thing for me is what.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Is happening between our lack of success pressuring and sacking
the QB.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Overall, I mean, save for last week.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
Of course, you put five on golf, and then the
lack of turnovers and the lack of splashy plays on
the back end. You know where I'm going with this.
Like that, there's just something that's off that was there
you can't predict. You know, they were tied for the
NFL lead in takeaways a year ago. It's tough to
predict or make that a measurable standard, and there are
so many different factors and circumstances that go into that.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
But overall, in totality.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
The splash plays in the secondary almost completely gone in
the nation, with some trouble we've had getting into the
QB this year.

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Yeah, I mean yeah, because you're not forcing a quarterback
to move faster than he wants to move.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
He's kind of sitting in the pocket. He's comfortable.

Speaker 6 (14:09):
The one Murphy almost had was where he broke on
the out route and Lamar Jackson throws up perfect, like perfect.
It was like a change up, Like he didn't throw
the fastball, he threw the change up.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
And that's that's kind of the thing.

Speaker 6 (14:22):
That's like great defenses you have to be able to
It's just like great hitters in baseball. You can't just
throw a fastball. You gotta throw a change up, you
gotta throw a slider, you gotta throw a curve. But
you gotta go something off speed when you know they're coming.
And that's what he did. He kind of stared the
blitz down most of the time. He stared the rush
down and hoped that his offensive line and running backs
could you know, keep him protected. And then the minute

he felt like, okay, this is a quick out Bier
Murphy's sitting on it, he just floated it right over him.
So part of the like the other one was it
Isaiah Rodgers on the tip from Van Ginko couldn't get
to it, you know, the other one Van Ginko gets
the tip and Lamar Jackson knocks it down. You know, honestly,
I wish he hit pushed Lamar Jackson because at that point,
once you hit the ball, you can do whatever you

want to the receivers, anybody.

You can hit the quarterback. You So if he had just.

Speaker 6 (15:08):
Thrown Lamar Jackson to the ground, now he can stand
under the ball and intercept it. He kind of stood
there with him and like boxed them out and let
Lamar Jackson knock the ball down again. I know it's
probably like, well there's a quarterback. I want to be
careful because theyll throw flag on me. But yeah, I
think the splash plays could have come, but it just
wasn't the Vikings day. Like I feel like, you know,
a couple of weeks ago, when was Isaiah Rodgers had

those huge plays, those same plays today if last you
know whatever, two weeks ago, three weeks whatever game that was,
they happened. It's just today wasn't the Vikings defensive day.
And it's been that way. Like you have to get
but Lamar Jackson mainly you have to get after him
and then make him move in the pocket uncomfortably. He
was pretty comfortable for a lot of those dropbacks. And

I think that's that was the biggest key.

I just wanted to get guys thoughts on going for
two when they scored in the fourth. I actually do
know the map behind that. I'm usually a huge proponent
for that. I have to argue my friends explain why
it makes sense, but I actually didn't like it in
this case. I know they were really discombobulated. Everything was
going wrong. I just didn't trust them to get the
two there. I think they should have probably just kicked

for overtime.

albeit it ended up not mattering because the Vikings weren't
able to find their way back into the end zone
to then have to attempt the two point conversion that
they would be forced to use to tie instead of
potentially just kicking the extra point to tie because they
went for two when they made it twenty seven nineteen

and were unsuccessful.

Ron I'm reading about it. Kind of the idea is.

You want, from a momentum standpoint, you put yourself in
a spot where if you get that too, then as
they are driving down to score that touchdown there, if
they had been successful, an extra point wins them the
game versus simply then going to overtime.

I understand the logic behind it. I even understand some
of the math behind it. Like Alex was talking about,
I frankly just don't like it. That's just me as
me as a rube, I'm thinking to myself, you're at home,
Just handle bleeping business at home. If it requires OT,
it requires OT to mess around and such with, you know,
in that particular spot, as discombobulated as they were, just

get rikered out there, get an extra point, make it
a touchdown game, and then we can see what happens.

Yeah, not getting the two point conversion conversions also deflating,
like to your team, it's like you're up, You're up.
Jalen Naylor makes a great catch, Just ride that high,
Ride that high, go back because again, if they if
they're down seven, you come back out there with a
different mindset.

The fact that you're only down seven.

Now you put the pressure like on the other team
to kind of feel like, dang, they just drove down.

You know, had a great drive before that.

Even within that drive, you know the thirty yards something
scamper for a first down.

You know, to get a bunch of yards back.

Yeah, you know, if you're down seven again, mentally, everybody's
still in it. I just I don't like it either
because I look at like when you make those decisions.
Dan Campbell goes against a lot of analytics at times,
Like he does a lot of stuff that people like, dude,
just kick the field goal. Just do this, just do
you know, don't go for it here, punt or kick
the field goal. Stop going for it on fourth from whatever.
And it did bite Dan Campbell on the butt in
the NFC Championship game against the forty nine ers. Right, Yeah,

but there's a time to do in a time not
like it shouldn't just be analytics. You know, like people
probably can go back and say, dude, if you just
took the field goal there, it's Dan Cambell I'm talking about.
You're probably in the in the super Bowl, you know,
so sometimes like going like the guy said, analytics might
say this is the time to do it, but feel
the game, like feel it. You know, I think Dan
Campbell failed against the forty nine ers. He wasn't feeling

the game like you were absolutely destroying them. Just keep
taking every single point at that point, no need to
like pile it on for one more touchdown, take the
three that puts a bigger distance on them, like like
feel the game out. And that's where sometimes these coaches
get caught up in the analytics side of it, and
you know, I just I didn't like it there, But
the broadcast said it. They were like, oh this, it

(21:38):
does call for this in this situation, but who calls
for it? Like what math are you doing? You're I
agree with you, you're at home. It's okay to going overtime
at home on the road. I get it because you
don't want to deal with their fans anymore and you
just want to dagger them you're at home. You're going
to have a quiet overtime. When your team gets out there,
your defense is going to have all the help in
the world from the fans.

Just take it overtime.

Can you imagine if we had gone to overtime, how
many false starts we could have had that was taken
from us today? We only had eight. We only had
eight today. I feel cheated thirteen total penalty that we
didn't get the extra penalty. Uh, the extra false starts
in the extra period, wand a dozen?

You want to just go for a four dozen? I

a Baker's dozen of penalties though ye had thirteen there.

needs to understand the the play he's the wide receiver
or tied in or running back from the backfield, he's
going to throw to in the huddle and the offensive
line to kid keep no when the move, move, move

on rotation, when the when when Jake McCarthy gets the ball,
doing the harder when he when he hiking the ball,
when the when he hiking the ball. That's pretty much
what I need to discuss, because the previous caller already
brought up most of the stuff that I mentioned mentioned earlier.
