That sounded our cast a little bit, a little bit, okay?

Speaker 4 (00:38):
That guy right there, that's Mike McDonald.

Speaker 5 (00:41):
He exists, Markerrish, Mike Madonald Donald, Mark Parrish, my old
right winger.

Speaker 6 (00:46):
Yeah, yeah, it just stuck with me.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
We asked.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
We asked him like thirty minutes ago, Mike, did you
ever pass to Parish and Parish score or vice versa?
And he claims that he threw one between his legs
and you didn't bury it, and he thinks it would
have been his greatest assist in his entire career.

Speaker 5 (01:01):
I want the video of that. I want the video proof.
Perry had a strong part of his game. Just sit
in the slot, Yeah, don't move.

Speaker 6 (01:13):
Amen, Amen, baby.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
You don't carry the mail. Just sit there.

Speaker 6 (01:16):
No, I didn't want the mail.

Speaker 7 (01:18):
Wait to wait till I get set up in front
and just hit my stick.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
So then, how many times did you score off of
a Madonnald rebound?

Speaker 6 (01:25):
Well, there wasn't a whole lot of Madonald rebound.

Speaker 7 (01:29):
Still for one thing, But yeah, I got quite a
few off of stick I got. I got a little
heat from one of the first power play I was
working as I was, I was always front and then
the net in front of the net, excuse me, and
he fired a park and I moved my stick and
he was not happy with me. He goes, what did
you move your stick for. I'm like, well, I was

(01:49):
trying to knock the puck. He's like, next time, don't
move your stick. Next time, I didn't move my stick.
Go no, kidding, stay out of the way. People, that's
exactly right.

Speaker 8 (02:01):
Well, welcome to the show. I don't know if you've
ever listened to this stupid show, and blame me if
you didn't. But I hope you're excited to be here
and play the initials game today. Weren't so glad to
have you.

Speaker 5 (02:09):
There's a lot of people that listen to it, so
I've got a lot of text messages the last five
days preparing myself for this.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
You know, you do have some fans out there. You know,
it's good to know.

Speaker 8 (02:21):
You got a sweet unreal hoodie on looking good, on
you feeling good. We support that brand as well, so
we're glad.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
To have you.

Speaker 8 (02:26):
And again at KF dot com slash Watch right now
you can tune in to watch this all happen. Do
you feel confident at all? Do you know the game
very well?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Very little?

Speaker 4 (02:35):
Yeah, me too, We've been playing it for years.

Speaker 6 (02:38):
Yeah, that's perfect.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
If I told everybody who's said I'm coming to text
me if you have an idea what it is.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
You are here and in part because we're giving away
a trip for two to Ottawa for the World Juniors,
And obviously it's cool that Perish and you are both
here to talk about how important that is. Right, the
World Juniors is a huge deal in the hockey community
and it's going to be here in a year, but
it's in Ottawa.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Next month.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
So just your experiences, I assume you played at the
World Juniors.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, what is that like? It's an amazing showcase.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
I mean you feel like it's the Olympics for you know,
seventeen to nineteen year olds. You know, you're playing against
the best country, best players in the world. My experience
first one was in Moscow in eighty seven. And then
so that was my draft year eighty seven. So came
back from Moscow and they had the ratings of the

(03:30):
players who are expected to go in the draft that year,
so surprising. I'm like, oh, I'm like I was positioned
up there, so with Trevor Lindon, who was in medicine
hat who played for Team Canada at the time. So
from that point on we were kind of head to
head until the June to the draft to lou Nanny
made a selection in Montreal. So that was a big,
a big tournament, big kind of showcase for players and

(03:53):
you know, opportunity to make a name for yourself as
far as if you're drafted or want to get drafted.
And then the following year was in Anchorage, Alaska, and
I was with Billy garn Oh God, Jeremy Ronick. I
think Doug wag, John McClair. We had a cast of
characters and anchorage. But yeah, it was two years of

(04:14):
you know, fun hockey and Otto is coming up, and
then we get the fiftieth anniversary here, so a lot
of people excited for that one.

Speaker 8 (04:22):
I love talking to hockey players and you guys mentioned
where you played when you were kids. You just said
you played in Moscow in nineteen eighty seven, Like it
was easy to get to.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Moscow in nineteen eighty seven. That must have been crazy.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
Yeah, we we took a we flew into Poland Warsaw,
which wasn't much better than Moscow. So we had a
connector there and that was Aeroflot I think the Russian
airline or whatever it was from Warsaw to Moscow. And
I mean it's like livestock cattle coming on the plane.

(04:56):
It was just the weirdest thing. I mean, animals and
stuff off going into Moscow. It was just and you know,
you're you're kind of red curtain kind of communists kind
of time.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
So it was really I mean it was really tough.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
And then uh, just to get around, we weren't told
to go outside. We had to pack a bunch of
stuff like just essentials, toilet paper, food, crackers, chocolate, you know, food,
just things that get you through. And it was tough.
And then uh, it was funny. Then my my second
year with the North Stars, we go back for training

(05:31):
camp and so everybody's like, this is nineteen ninety. So
everyone's like, well, how is Moscow? I said, God, we
shouldn't be going stay right here. So they're like why,
I'm like, well, we just wait and see. And so
it was. It was tough.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
It was tough.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
Pars.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Did you play at the juniors?

Speaker 6 (05:49):
Yeah, yeah, I was in Boston.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Okay, that's which was a little differ Moscow.

Speaker 7 (05:55):
What animals got on the Boston just US hockey players.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
It's just as hockey players.

Speaker 7 (06:01):
And then uh, you know, my second year though, we
were in Geneva, Switzerland.

Speaker 6 (06:04):
Geneva and Eric Switzerland. Unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (06:07):
Oh yeah, yeah, most shaking his head, I got it
was unbelieva. One of my coolest, probably my favorite rink
I've ever skated in, was up in the mountain and
mountains in the Alps and one of the ends of
the ice was just open. There was no wall, there
was no windows. It was you could just you're just
looking at the scenery of the Alps, and if you
fired a puck at that end and it got redirected,

(06:29):
went up and over the glass, and it just kept
on soaring into the Alps. It was so cool. Yeah,
so there was.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
It was.

Speaker 7 (06:36):
It was a little living in Moscow a little bit.
You know, we didn't have to worry about packing anything.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Anchorage is tough in the winter too.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Oh yeah, about three hours of sunlight eleven to two.

Speaker 8 (06:47):
Yeah, so you were born six months before me, mister
Mike Madonna, And uh, my biggest question to you is
were you a Motley Crue fan or a Rat fan?

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Oh? Boy, that's a toss up.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
By the way, you are allowed to say either most.

Speaker 6 (07:02):
Of us.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Seventy or not.

Speaker 7 (07:05):
I guess what he would go to thirty eight, specially
answer that he didn't answer quickly.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
I was. I was both fans of both of them,
Rat and Crew.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
But I saw Crew at Motley Center in like nineteen
ninety ninety one at the met Center, and it was
like one of my favorite all time concerts. That's when
I think Tommy started doing the aerial things with the
drums and stuff.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
But doctor Field Good Tour.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yep, absolutely unbelievable. That's the best.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
But I think my favorite one was we did Ozzy
Osbourne at the Target Center in ninety one, myself, Scott Ericson,
rich Gannon, Chuck Knoblock. I mean, we just had to
cast a character. We all go to Ozzie and we
go downstairs and and uh take a picture with Ozzie.
Back in the day, it was it was a riot.

(07:49):
We had some good times with those guys. So, but
Ozzie was pretty good ninety one ninety two, I think
at Target so was he still coherent at that He
was very good at that point, he still had it together. Wait,
what do you What do you tell people when they
ask you what you do with the wild right?

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Because you do have kind of a vague title. It's like, well,
I wonder what Mike McDonald actually does. He's an advisor, right,
I think an executive advisor. It sounds very important. Give
us a give us a general idea of what you
do with Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Well, I'll give you a quick background.

Speaker 5 (08:20):
I had a mutual friend in Phoenix who was friends
with Craig, and so I wanted to get back in
the game. So we had conversations with Craig. I flew
out to Minnesota and met Craig and saw. I knew
Matt Maker for years, and you know, so we got
talking about, you know, trying to get back involved in
the game. I was living in Phoenix with my family
at the time, so I started coming back and forth.
You know, we go to Utah at times, so we

(08:40):
actually lived in Utah for a short little stint of time.
So I was coming back and forth and went to
the Board of Governor's meeting in June one year in
Vegas with Craig and let Matt and I know that
he was going to let go of Paul Fent and
the GM, and so we wanted to get a hunt
for a new GM. So I was kind of thrust
into that position, not knowing what that entails. And so

(09:03):
he's like, yeah, well we need you to kind of
run some interviews. I'm like, huh, I go, well, we'll
send you a list of questions, we'll go through them
and kind of, you know, we'll kind of sift through
all the things. I mean, I didn't know I had
so many friends when people knew that I was kind
of in the works for helping them find a GM.
I mean, I had more calls and text messages from
people that I hadn't heard from in years, and so

(09:25):
we kind of whittled it down. So this was like
five six years ago, and so we got it down
to Billy g And you know, Billy and I've known
each other for a long long time. So but that
at that point, I was still kind of going between
business hockey, kind of going back and forth, just kind
of figuring out what it is I'd want to pursue
a little bit more seriously. But I think once Billy
got involved, it was more hockey side and being around

(09:47):
Dean Everson when he was here, and of course now
John Hines and the coaching staff and the players, and
you know, sometimes it's just like a more of an
extra set of.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Eyes and sounding board.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
Some of these guys just go through a lot of things, yeah, mentally, physically,
just kind of talking them through some things, talking them
off the cliff. Things aren't that bad on the ice
as you think it is. I'm you know, what am
I seeing on the ice that they may not be
seeing or feeling. So try to give him some insight
and just try to, you know, keep it upbeat and
try to explain to him that this is a this

(10:18):
is a short amount of time in your life. This
is just go have fun, put a lot into it,
enjoy your time because it's going to go fast.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Was there any conflict if the moment you realize that
Garan was probably the right choice, you're like, is it
going to be bad? Is this like a nepotism thing
where I'm going to just name one of my buddies?
The GM like, is it harder? Are you conflicted when
the best candidate is also somebody you're close with?

Speaker 5 (10:40):
Well, I get to hang that over his head, I said, Billy,
remember who hired you? Remember who hired Billy? It's pretty
He's been a great guy. I couldn't ask for a better,
better teammate, better friend. We've known each other since we're
probably eighteen nineteen, like I said, from Anchorage, Alaska to now.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
So he's done a fabulous job. I'm just I'm just
lucky I get to be hanging around.

Speaker 9 (11:00):
Like you said you wanted to get back in the game,
and that you had lived in Phoenix and now living
in the Twin Cities, and you have five kids, and
I would imagine do all five play hockey.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
We have three out of the five do four six
and ten year olds, so, and then the other ones
are big time basketball, football players, soccer.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
So.

Speaker 5 (11:21):
But I thought hockey was intense here, but basketball is
like right up there right yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
So but sports in general, yes.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
That's pretty much. It just sums it up. So but yeah,
there's just they love it. You know, the ponds are
starting to free, so we're starting to get out there
and have some fun.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
They just love it. They've enjoyed it.

Speaker 5 (11:38):
I think I was, you know, a little hesitant coming
back from Arizona moving our kids back here, but I
think once they got here, they got into school, We're
got into a great neighborhood, tons of friends.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
They just love it. So I'm happy it turned out
well for them. And you're running into the rink rink
three of them anyway, basketball courts, kinnas courts, soccer fields. School. Yeah,
what's the age range? Four, six, eight and two tens.
I got a late start too. Yeah that's all right, man.
You lived your life. You lived your life. Having five

(12:10):
kids while you played in the NHL would have been
a whole different challenge. It would happen. I was too selfish.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
I was worried about myself and playing, and but Billy
gives me grief because he had four kids really young
in Dallas. And now he looks at me, He's like, hey,
how's everything going.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
So he gives it to me.

Speaker 8 (12:26):
Now, one more question before we get ready to play
the game. And this is a really odd question to answer,
But you're the only person I'll ever be able to
ask this too, because you're the only person that can
be asked this question. How does it feel when you
hear someone introduce you as the greatest American born hockey player?

Speaker 10 (12:46):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (12:46):
Boy?

Speaker 5 (12:47):
I was like, well, surreal, I guess I don't. I
never expected to kind of have that title. I think
you just love the game, and you're around some great people,
and you play a long time and great things and things.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Tend to happen, and you know you're in the right
position at the right time, great coaches, great players. Uh,
you know, just are able.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
To chase some numbers that I didn't think I would
be able to chase closer as my career was kind
of winding down with chasing uh, Joey Mullen's numbers and
Phil Housley's and and and then we got them. So
it was just you know, I guess when you're long
around long enough and play long enough with good teams
and good players, good things happen. So but uh, you know,

(13:27):
I was fortunate to be around some great American players
Brian Leech and Chris Chelly, O's Brett Hall, Joey Mulin,
Mark Parrish.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
H how much pride do you take in the fact
that Parish came up so short to the level that
you said, I love the.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
I'm a long way, I'm provate Parry. I mean, you
only scored like four hundred more goals in it.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
Is that it takes No, that's pretty cool, man. Yeah,
played for forty years. Some good bound happened.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Austin Matthews is American, correct, Yes, So are you nervous
that he's that he is at some point going to
be in that conversation and statistically catch you and then
you're going to have to be at the celebrations when
when Austin scores his six hundredth.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Goal or whatever happens.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
I think that would come down the pipe sometime. I
don't know if I'll be able to make those trips
that by then, but I think Patrick Kane's the next
kindline who's going to be clipping these numbers here in
about another year or two. So oh, he's that close.
Y oh, you know he was that you know, he's
on my heels. So he's the next guy. But he's
got some He's got a good little resume himself, a

(14:41):
few Cups and scoring championships and.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Stuff like that.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
So yeah, I think he's going to be uh hailing
that title soon.

Speaker 8 (14:49):
Sorry to dominate the conversation, guys, but one more question.
You played so much hockey and had so much success,
and what was the most fun moment of your life
when it came to playing hockey.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Man, that's a tough one. I think there was probably
i'd say three or four. Obviously, the finals here in
ninety one was one of those just Cinderella springs that
we just never thought could happen. Having that run that
we had with the North Stars, I think finally went in. Well,
the World Cup in ninety six was kind of a

(15:20):
big turning point for USA. Hockey. Cup of ninety nine Dallas,
Buffalo was you know, right up there the Olympics two
silver medal against Canada.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
You know, then you go into your you know later
years in your career where you like.

Speaker 5 (15:39):
You know, you don't expect things to happen as far
as Jersey retirements and Hall of Fame and you know
the statue things is just kind of well, I've just
been really blessed, unfortunate, a lot of a lot of
great things have happened.

Speaker 7 (15:52):
Uh yeah, I think that's Do you see how hardy
is to like money too?

Speaker 6 (15:58):
Can you see that? Were you the kid?

Speaker 8 (16:00):
It was out on the ice when the sun was
going down and you were being called to come in,
but you.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Just loved it so much you wouldn't come in all day,
all day.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
We lived on a pond too, fell in a few
times and then my mind pulled pulled the plug in
that I said, I'm building a rink in the back because.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
You fell in the pond.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
Seward was a few times there, but there was a
kid in the neighborhood would go out and test the ice,
and so we'd always have a rope and a few sticks,
so you know, you're always prepared.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
It starts cracking, you're like.

Speaker 6 (16:32):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
See, that's why some people like that. You're about to
play initials Mike. Because Parish is good at everything. Historically
not great at this game. It's fun to humble people
that are great at everything, and this game can be.

Speaker 2 (16:48):

Now it's time for the Saint Paul Federal Credit Union
Initials Jackpot.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
That's correct.

Speaker 8 (20:41):
The Saint Paul Federal Credit Union Initials Jackpot is currently
seventy nine thousand, five hundred dollars talking at my new car,
save money in your current Carlo and do it with
say Paul, Federal credit unions.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Now for Carlin rates as what with six point two nine.

Speaker 8 (20:51):
Percent apply to day at Saint Paul upsu dot org
slash camp and federally insured by the NCUA.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
All right, this goes up five hundred dollars every week.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
It's at an all time high now, seventy nine thousand
and five hundred dollars. If the caller guess is one
letter in the right spot out of the two, they
win two hundred and fifty dollars, which is still really
cool right before the holidays. But if they tell me both,
then the third ever winner and they win almost eighty
thousand dollars, they win seventy nine thousand, five hundred dollars.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
That would be sweet, right, Christmas miracle? Why not?

Speaker 1 (21:22):
Let's see ray Quinn. No, you do not get to play.
You don't get what you want to guess. You can
guess for fun, caller. Where are you from? And what
is your name? Yeah, Punter from Bloomington, All right, said
Spencer from Bloomington. Hunter Hunter, Hunter from blooming got it,
got it, you guys, hear better than I do. Hunter

(21:43):
from blooming Stocking, How cool would this be if you
won seventy he knows, I guess seventy nine thousand, five
hundred dollars?

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Hunter, What are you guessing?

Speaker 3 (21:55):
We're gonna go with?

Speaker 2 (21:56):
And is the Nancy is an apple.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
And a Nancy is an apply the way you guessed?
Confidently guessed as well. All right, he's going n a
if he has one, writing wins two fifty. If he
hasn't both right, he is rich as hell. Come on,
does Hunter and Bloomington the home of Mark Parrish. Let's
have at least one?

Speaker 2 (22:17):
Right? Nope? No, sorry, no, so next week eighty thousand? Yeah,
that's a k next week? No?

Speaker 1 (22:29):
All right, quickly for Mike. Mike, here's the rules. It
works like this. I have twelve items. They can be people, places, things,
Phrases can be absolutely anything that your brain can come
up with. I'm going to reveal the initials here in
a second. Your job is to mentally think of as
many things as you can keep them to yourself. They'll
think of in your head what it could be. I
start reading clues. Each item has six clues. Kind of

(22:51):
starts vague, It gets more specific as the clues get
more close to the end. If you know who are
what I'm describing, you, yell out your name. Yell out Mike.
Your name is your buzzer. If you get it right,
you get a point. If you get it wrong, though,
then you are out for the rest of just that item.
So if you ring in too early and you're out,
we played best out of twelve. You have to pronounce
the answers correctly.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
That's about it. Anybody else have any tips.

Speaker 9 (23:13):
Or rules or I would advise you to scratch out
the na that you already wrote down on your sheet
you just heard.

Speaker 10 (23:21):
And also, like if Marty rings in and she's wrong,
you can ring in while she's trying to guess.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
You get yourself in there. As soon as you think
you know what, just say Mike and we'll tell you
when you're ready.

Speaker 7 (23:31):
And you're actually kind of pitching me here a little bit, Mike,
because I get to ring in under Matt and Mike
or Mark, whichever name I come up with.

Speaker 6 (23:38):
But now I actually have to have my name.

Speaker 5 (23:40):
He has in the past rung in using Mike. Yeah,
true story, Who the hell is that? That's Mark?

Speaker 6 (23:48):

Speaker 1 (42:25):
Well, so we heard it was going to be either
you or Billy, and you played. Now we got to
get Bill Garant so at least he either gets shut
out or he can have breaking rights over you forever.
At some point we got to get Bill in here.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
We'll both come in here we go. Are you on
the right track?

Speaker 5 (42:41):
No?

Speaker 2 (42:41):
You not close?

Speaker 6 (42:47):
Man?

Speaker 2 (42:48):
As we have like two or three minutes left in
the show Man this team this year? What is going
on with the wild right?

Speaker 1 (42:52):
I think a lot of people thought playoffs are possible,
But I don't know if anybody saw this coming together
this quickly. Right now they have all things firing and
Gustufson it's obviously playing like a beast.

Speaker 2 (43:03):
What's going on with this team right now?

Speaker 5 (43:05):
Yeah, it was just I think it all started at camp.
I think John just set up president there just kind
of guys are all going to buy into the system.
It's hard when a refen a coach comes in mid
season trying to get his established a system and his
thoughts and ideas and how he wants to handle it.
But when he gets a training camp under his belt,
kind of sees what he has and he can kind

(43:25):
of set some set of tone early and the guys
all came in really committed. They were flying around for
camp and it showed at the start. Had a great October,
but confidence does a lot. They just got on a roll.
Carill has been just outstanding. They've had some some opportunistic
scoring from their defense. Spurgeon is starting to play really well,
and you know some of their young guys just you

(43:46):
know they're they're developing quick, and you know they've just
been on a great run. Like you said, Gusts has
been solid. But when it's all clicking, you feel good
about yourselves every night, and when you show up, you
feel like you're.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
In every game.

Speaker 5 (43:59):
You can come back from behind, hold the lead. You know,
just a lot of it was in confidence right.

Speaker 1 (44:05):
Now, so so far, no reason to think that this
is not sustainable.

Speaker 2 (44:08):
No, you can do this right now.

Speaker 5 (44:10):
They've had some injuries, I mean, Brodine' zukerrella I think
excel for a bit, but you know they've they've been
able to kind of ride the wave. I mean years past,
they've had some injury problems, but they haven't really been
in this position where they could kind of afford some
lapses in their game and still kind of be in
a good position come Christmas.

Speaker 2 (44:28):
So you know, hats off to them.

Speaker 5 (44:31):
They've just been you know, really really playing well committed
and you know it shows and their work ethic practice,
and it's kind of been really fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (44:38):
Can't thank you enough for coming in, man, Thank you
awesome having you. Now you're welcome back anytime you want
to redo again. If it's against Billy, that would be
even better.

Speaker 2 (44:47):
Oh yeah, I'll work them.

Speaker 4 (44:49):
It's great to get you because iland knew you from
the Mighty Ducks.

Speaker 5 (44:51):

six months. You know, they were actually weren't bad in
the late early nineties when we first did it.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
Yeah, Baz and.

Speaker 5 (45:07):
Uh but real funny story, we were walking we moved
into town, we went to a wild game, and my
kids are with me, and so we're walking around and
people just come and say hi and take pictures. And
you know, my eight year old finally says, you know that.
I think I know why they know you. Really is
from the Mighty Ducks. Yeah yeah, thanks for that.

Speaker 2 (45:29):
Huge thanks to Mike Madonna. Thank you.
