Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is it the one hundred, one hundred and twenty fifth
year this year, Let's find out. Let's go to the
project online. Welcome to the show. We have Alphonse, we
have Frank, father and son team this time around, right,
not bad?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yeah, that's correct.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
I love it. Welcome to the show. And at the
last day, it's not della camera, it's camera.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
That's correct. That's correct. Yep.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
I appreciate you guys coming on the show. Am I right?
What I've got in front of me, it's a big one.
But the one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary, that's correct.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
This is something where we can't be more folks pumped
up or stoked about because it's tradition for us. From
a family standpoint, five generations are personal dance, our personal
family and one hundred and twenty five straight years of
society and the festival. That's correct.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Do you guys must remember then too? And I hate
to be so stuck in the past, but I can't
help it. But the Saint Andrews, this feast was like
the opening act for the was the way I looked
at it as a kid, like this started us up.
It was the end of June ran from one weekend,
and then a couple of weeks later all of Worcester
(01:08):
Street got shut down for an entire week. Am I
remembering it right? Guys?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
I'll tell you what you're remembering that correctly. And these
are things that have been passed on, you know, from
my father and things he learned and saw as a
kid from his father and grandfather. It's exactly correct. It's
a big, big deal. Used to be the entire street,
Worcester Street and the whole Worcester Square area and all
of those traditional societies. It's their thing.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah. And now I mean, we're lucky that Saint Andrew's
that we still get this kicked off last night, runs
through Sunday. I got it wrong yesterday, so I want
to make sure I get it right till Sunday night
ten pm. And it's not an outdoor festival. If Timmy
Maya is not playing at it, he'll close things out
(01:53):
Sunday night at seven o'clock. But it looks like you
have the most the itinerary, the schedule. You've got more
going on I think than ever before at the Feast.
This year. This is this is the big, biggest ad
and and fullest calendar I've ever seen. Now you guys,
I don't know if you know. I've been covering this
(02:15):
for years. Patty Joe Esposito, God rest her soul. I
grew up with her, and she would see to it
that we I covered it every year. She took it
over her end, over whatever, out of respect for her father,
who I'm sure mister camera you must have known very well, oh,
(02:37):
very without a.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Doubt, the families have all you know, been entangled and
been together in a great sense of community for years. Yeah,
and how this all goes down, But without a doubt
we kick off every you know, the end of June,
just as you said, the Feast of the Malfi Towny Feast,
the Saint Andrew and Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night,
Sunday night wraps up Timmy Maya his fans each and
(03:01):
every night playing. Then. I can't tell you enough to
come out and see. It's been a tremendous a lot
of fun last night, A lot was packed and time,
great food, the whole deal.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, I saw it, I mean I truly did. Yeah.
I saw so many guys I went to high school
with posting on Facebook fro you know, at the feast.
Come down. One guy, you know, Gary Vass, I don't
know who had sauce all over his face. It's like,
does anybody telling you to wipe your face? He was
obviously just he there, Yeah, is eating fried dough or something.
(03:34):
Nobody's looking out for him and telling him to wipe
his face for the photo?
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Probably you know, back it up with a sausage and
pepper stuff something.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
There are you doing? Free? You got some free?
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Oh? Yes we do.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Oh. I used to love the surete when I was
a kid for a few years, or the free went away,
the fried moots, his dynamite, the sausage and peppers. What
else is on the menu this year?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Our Women's Society, which is really a shout out to
those folks and something that I think is something to
be quite proud of, as well as our men's society.
Of course, nineteen hundred Women's Society has been happening since
nineteen twenty three, pretty impressive. And they head up the
peaches and wine. They've got your espresso, they've got your
Italian pastries and the whole light. So you don't want
(04:22):
to miss those folks as well.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, and of course there's a procession that'll take place
on Sunday. I think that's always the case. Right on Sunday,
there's mass, there's a procession, it's the last day, and
you go out in style.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
That's a big deal. We do everything as best we
can to follow what actually happens in Omalfia and Italy
and Saint Andrew there as well. And yeah, that's an
old world procession in and around Worcester Square, down Worcester Street,
back to Chapel and back to Saint Michael's Church and
those types of things in have been a big traditional celebration.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, I'm going to make sure I acknowledge too that Saturday.
I see what you've got going there. You know, it's
like each I think this is a great way to do.
It is brought to you by like tonight is brought
to you by a one Toyota. That's great. Tomorrow night
is brought to you by Aavanni, which I think is
(05:15):
really important to note this year, in particular with the
passing their staggering blow to the community. A wonderful family
and a neighbor, I mean a Worcester Square neighbor, no doubt,
what would Worster Square be without Avanni's as morbid as
that may sound, but I mean, we say, go about
all of our loved ones. There I did, you can't.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
You can't say it any better. That's exactly right of
an amazing establishment, the local supporter and a part of
the family really in society.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah. So I'm hoping that the weather is on your side.
But I mean I've been there before. With a couple
of sprinkles here and there, it doesn't stop the action
as far as the feast is concerned, Rayner Steine.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
That procession moved on. So does the feast. You know.
The food keeps sizzling off the ovens, and the fried
dough keeps coming out, and the music keeps blaring and playing,
and we just we march it on.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah, tell me about the before I let you guys go.
And again it's Frank and Alphonse a fathership. Yeah, I know, yes,
you guy, tag team the cameras. Are you born and
raised on wester I would imagine born.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
And raised right Dad's family right from the Worcester Square Eer,
right from Worcester Street. Of course I'm born and raised
and so is he and heat David.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Tell me about the St Andrews Ladies Society the scholarships.
I was just curious about that because I see that
that happened six o'clock Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah. So actually I was a recipient of those scholarships myself,
graduating high school and then attending Fairfield University. What they
do is truly a wonderful thing. They raised money, They
do different events to raise money for those scholarships. This year,
I believe they did a lemon Cello event and raised
money for the scholarships that way, and then on the
(07:00):
Sunday night they present them at six o'clock and in
front of everybody, you know, the kind of cap off
before they send it off to timmy Maya. They'll they'll
cap off with that scholarship and present those to the recipients,
which is wonderful.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
It is my nephew benefited from one, you know, out
of state, but through the Italian kids got to know too,
or parents say in many cases too that these are
out there and they're wonderful and they're available. But if
you don't know about them, you don't know that those
dollars are available, you can't get them. And my nephew
(07:34):
benefited out of state through an Italian organization that was
just looking to help kids out and pursue their their
college dreams. So that's amazing to hear that. Chada, you
had a bit of an in. Though you had a
little bit of an in, I gotta say, yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Well, it definitely helped that being so close to the society.
You know, they kind of already knew the traditions and
history of my family. But it's a wonderful outreach for
other families and students out that Italian American tradition, absolutely
heritage and what they represent as well. So when they
share their story, they always try to, you know, give
it to the best suited applicant, but they always try
(08:10):
to get help out there to anybody that needs it. Really.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, and it's the chaer Burrows. I just got hit.
It was like, how are you forgetting the cha Burrows. Yeah, yeah, society,
that's it. The cha Burrows. I went to school. Well,
I mean I know all three of them, but I
was in I think Anthony was the one who was
in my class class. Wasn't one of them a fighter
for a little while? One of them wanted to be
a boxer for a little bit.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
That might be true. I think over the years, the
great hockey players. They were good. Yeah, there's a lot
of traditions here at the Families.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
I love it and I love that it's still going strong.
It's the one hundred and twenty fifth year. It was
great meeting you guys. I'll see you there this weekend.
I probably won't get down until Sunday, but I'm on vacation.
Who knows, there might be a Saturday and Sunday, but
I'll be there this weekend.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
I'm down and see us. We'll make sure you get
well fed. We'll make sure you have a good time.
I'm pastor Frijuto, pastor Provolone. We'll still get you involved
in some of the fun activities that are going to
be We appreciate the time.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Oh yeah very much. No, thank you guys for coming on.
And I'm happy to jump on and make a make
a fool of myself. Drink a little wine and orange
so to take the mic, maybe do ten minutes of
stand up comedy.
