Speaker 1 (00:00):
Why I haven't said much about the passing of Jeff
Fox yet on there. I have millions of stories. I'm
sure you do too. We were actually very close at
one time. And let me tell you something as far
as pancreatic cancer is concerned, which got my mom and
he lasted an awfully long time time with pancreatic cancer.
(00:20):
He had the Whipple procedure, which is something you can
You're given eighteen months with pancreatic cancer and it is
to the to the day it is you can get
this thing called the Whipple procedure. If it works, you
get five years. If it doesn't, they bail halfway through.
They bailed on my mother halfway through. They couldn't do it.
Jeff got it successfully. But I'm telling you it was
(00:41):
more than five years.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, no, I listen.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I've seen his posts over the years, and he was
very good about keeping everybody updated.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah. It was a character.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, yeah, listen, I said. I did a lot of
fond memories on Channelly posted. Of course, I couldn't believe.
Within I don't know a half hour, there were two.
There might be more now, two thousand comments. I mean,
he was that beloved in the State, and I remember,
you know, listen, there are a lot of famous weather
Scott of course, and Bob Maxim's been around. They're all great, Gil,
(01:14):
you know, Uh, Jeff was just again it was in
an era that all we had was TV. Nobody had
an iPhone watching, you know, nobody had a laptop. We
just sat down and when there was a weather system coming,
whether it's snow or you know, a hurricane like Gloria.
He was the guy I knew. Yes, Hilton Cattally was
up more in Hartford. I don't even know who NBC
(01:36):
had at the time, you know, in the eighties. But Jeff,
you know when he rolled those sleeves up, took the
sport I said ungently. He always wore those double breasted
sport coats, which are yeah, you know you probably still
have but no, I know, but.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You're accusing me of having tea suit.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He had a way of communicating to that camera like
at the time, right like he would walk up to
the camera, oh and then walk back.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Very theatrical, theatrical. It was a fairer kid and right
from Brooks a distinctive boys, I know, there was something.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Engaging about him when he said to you don't go
to bed weather update after this, you know you didn't
go to bed?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
You wait, you waited for that commercial.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
He would apologize for interrupting General Hospital, like there was
a snow, so sorry about this one, and he'd know
a little bit about the show. We'll get back to
what's going on with Duke Lavery in a minute.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
He understood marketing TV marketing before many did. Right meteorologists,
you know now, I think they're all very theatrical and
obviously you know iPhone and everything else.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
But I feel the opposite way. It's funny to hear
you said that. I think it's not a lost art,
but they were luck. All I can say is this.
There was a period of time where I was very
close with Jeff. He was the first president my daughter ever.
When Stella was born, I came in to do the
show the next morning, Jeff Fox was waiting for me
at the door to The first president I ever got
(02:59):
a father for my daughter was from Jeff Fox. He
lived right up the street Mount Carmel, as you probably
know or re call, and he uh and his wife
Helene have the rare distinction of being able to say, hey,
we went on double dates with Vinie Penn and my
then wife. Not many there weren't. Weren't a whole lot
(03:20):
of double dates. But we went out with the Foxes
several times. Wonderful couple. My ex used to see Jeff
with Ann Nyberg at the Panera in North Haven office.
They were very close and Iburg, I guarantee you as
having a horrible date. Yeah, they were very close. They
became very good friends. And uh. The one thing I
(03:42):
noticed boz with him as opposed to everybody else I
piled around with and I piled around with everybody, was
that guy got approached. You'd be in the middle of
eating your steak. I'm sorry, I'm sorry to interrupt.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
And he loved it, No, he was. He loved it.
A bona fide star. I mean, he still good.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
We had him so many time at the New Haven Coliseum.
He would always open the ice Capades or Disney on ice. Oh,
you know, he was my go to. I got to
know him myself. His daughter interned Atkdale years ago.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, I mean I got to know Jeff well.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
He would text me over the years when he went
to California and all that, so we kept in touch,
not like you and I obviously, but you know, like.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
He you know, he just was. He was a presence
on that darn TV.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Yeah, he loved it.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
He loved it, and you know what he defined it, channeling. Yeah,
I feel like wherever when he went over to Fox
sixty wanted and didn't feel right.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah, I agree for me, I remember all that, so
we I don't know what happened, and I tried to
figure it out for years because I had him on
a few years ago here when he started. He returned
to WTNH and was like doing you know, weather for
a brief little stent, because that rich Grass is just
he's so good at what he does. He's like people
(04:54):
would like to see him again doing the weather. Yeah,
and he had already been diagnosed and we had a
great but it was almost like he didn't remember, and
maybe it was the illness. Maybe it's just a life
like how much time we had spent together, What a
key role he had played in my life upon becoming
a father. But we went years without Talia and I
didn't know why. And yet I was in touch with
(05:16):
his wife, I was in touch with his daughter, became
very good friends with his daughter. And then you just
reminded me right there. Do you remember the time that
he botched a prediction? So he wrote an apology and
they published it on the cover of the New Haven Register.
I'm going back only about twelve years, so it was
on the front page of the Register. It's a picture
(05:37):
of Jeff Fox with the words I'm sorry over it,
and they gave him the front page of the local
newspaper because he wanted it to apologize for getting a
snowstorm wrong. And I had some fun with that on
the air too.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
That was it. He got mad at that, but we
were boys.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
We used to kill each other. But I think that
was it because then he was gone shortly thereafter. I
tried to get him on when he did resurface on
on Fox, just to you know, to celebrate him landing
on his feet.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Connecticut adored him and he just you know, he was
on for so long and uh, you know, he just was.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Just I don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I always said, some people can relate to the camera
a better than others.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Like everybody.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
There's so many people on TV now right we're watching
you know, news or anything, just but some people break
through that fourth wall and they're in your living room
or they're in your kitchen.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
You know, like like me with that the movies like
it's kind of similar, I would say.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Talking about those who really connect.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
And Bozzy actually entered today and he goes, it must
be sad for you today to see what a true
local celebrity gets upon passing what you will.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Not you you'll, you'll you'll get something, but not like this.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
I don't think. And it's been nice.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
I deserve it.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
I saw Darren Sweeney post something. I saw Matt Scott
post a really very nice well.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
They were very close.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
I know they were. No I read it all in
that wanted.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
To be him.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Matt Scott came darned. I mean he didn't. I know
all these weather guys, he adored him. Listen.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
He's another one that I went to. Hi'm like, why
is why is Jeff being like he goes, you know,
Jeff's a star. He's like and.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
He was a star. I think he was the biggest star.
But aside from of course, but Jeff, I think just
to find it.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
I mean was another one.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
He was another one. Keith has been on forever.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Great man. He's a great man.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
He's a great guy. But no it really is.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
And but you know, but I know Jeff just he
was the weather guy, right guy, doctor belto doctor doctor belt.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Two. The difference is, though, like Keith Coons could be
at the corner table in a restaurant that you're at
and he could be on the d L. He'll never
know he's there. Jeff, you knew if Jeff Fox was
there one Jeff wanted you to know he was there.
And Iberg, she might not want you to know she's there.
You will though there's like a glow to her. She
(07:56):
doesn't sit in the corner room. No disrespect to Keith.
I've spotted Keith at rest runs before and he can
he can blend with the common folk. Ursey used to
get called out all the time everywhere. You know, I
remembers they're on.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
In your living again when people really watched local news.
You know, yeah, it's waned of course, but you know,
back in the day, in the eighties, nineties, two thousands,
we all watched the news. That's where we got our news.
I mean didn't see it and then came along and
then obviously the iPhone.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
But yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Still think there's something I honestly do it now.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I still watch the news. I still get up every morning.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, and I put on local Yah, and I get
joked about it at work. Everyone's on an iPad or
on YouTube or whatever.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
There's okay, I'm older, you know whatever. It's it's a
it's habitual. But no, I like my blue Weather Local traffic.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
But boss, I get hit with it everywhere. The people
who approach it, they don't even know. I do a
radio show. Every time I'm at the supermarket, a woman
will say, hey, just the last time I was there,
I reached for the the noog is out. Now you
know that that just comes in the geita whatever you know,
in the cart and eggnog. So I reached over this
(09:07):
old one. She went, oh, I'm sorry. She turned around.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
You're the movie They don't know my name.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
I do a radio show, but they know I'm the
movie guy.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Again.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
I believe viewership has not waned at all. But you know,
Jeff Fox, I really have the fondest memories. I knew
it was coming. Oh yeah, pancreatic cancer is a wicked one.
And I never saw a better fight. I never He
posted a video last week because he was funny.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, I saw that.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Goofy, you know, his trademark. His voice had been affected
because the chemo will do that, the radiation will do that.
But nobody has ever fought pancreatic cancer in my life
anyway as well as he has. So Jeff Fox rec
in peace,
