Justice Minister Andrew Little suggests the Property (Relationships) Act needs a more modern approach.
It was found to be "no longer fit for purpose" by the Law Commission last June and there are renewed calls to update it.
It follows a series of drawn-out matrimonial legal battles - including one high-profile case in Auckland that's taken eight years to get to court.
He also hopes judges are watching and preventing behaviour that could delay proceedings.
