Now more of the Saturday Morning Showon seven to ten wore once again Joe
Bartlett. Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Joe Bartlett Saturday Show
and Big Sports news. This week, the Jets have traded for quarterback Aaron
Rodgers. This thing has been inthe works for quite a while now.
They finally got the deal done justas the NFL is ready to begin drafting,
(00:26):
So the Jets apparently don't have totry and draft a quarterback this time
and come up empty again. Butlet's get a closer look at this.
Joining me now is Zach Rosenblatt, writer with The Athletic and he covers the
Jets. Zack, good morning,Thanks for being with me. Yeah,
thanks for having me this thing. You know, it was always, I
guess, a done deal. Theonly question was what was the going to
(00:47):
price going to be to the Jets? Is that correct? Yeah? Yeah,
this is I think. You know, the moment Aaron Rodgers declared that
it was his intention to play forthe Jets, it was it was more
of a when on an f andit was coming to an agreement. You
know, they were squabbling over thedetails, but they finally came to an
agreement before the draft. I guessthe question is, you know, Jet
fans are probably excited because Aaron Rodgers. It's a good quarterback. We should
(01:10):
say was We don't know what heis now, But do you think this
is a good move? Yeah?Absolutely. You know, the Jets have
been desperate for competent quarterback play fora very long time. They had the
roster last year to make the playoffs, but they didn't have the quarterback to
get them there. And they decidedthey were going to go and get the
best one on the market that wasgettable, and that that was Aaron Rodgers.
(01:30):
And they believe he can play atthe MVP level that he did two
years ago. And so they're allin on trying to win the Super Bowl
right now and he's the best optionfor that. What about the cost of
getting him from the Packers? Howmuch you had have cost the Jets in
terms of draft picks, compensation orwhatever whatever they had to do to get
this. Yeah, you know thatthey swapped first round picks to them.
They traded a pick that'll likely becomea first next year, and they give
(01:53):
up their second round pick this year. That's like there's other like small details,
but those are the important ones, and you know, it's a lot
to give up for a guy that'sthirty nine, and you know, hypothetically,
you don't really know if he's gonnaplay more than one year. I
think the Jets think you will, but nobody really knows that Aaron Rodgers is
thinking. And yeah, it's alot to give up. But you have
to give up a lot to geta quality quarterback in the NFL. And
the Jets want to win right now, so they had no problem giving up
(02:14):
what they did well. Obviously heshould make the Jets better. I think
they have a well do they havea good offensive line? I know the
defense is good for the Jets.Their offensive line, they're pretty banged up
last year. They're bringing back alot of the same guys, but they
just believe it was bad luck andthey think this group is good enough to
be good. What about the receivers, I mean, how do they shave
(02:36):
up? Yay? You know GarrettWilson, they he was the offensive rookie
of the year last year. He'sa guy that number one receiver talent.
They signed Alamzzard who played with AaronRodgers in Green Bay. You know they're
bringing back Corey Davis, a solidveteran guy. And they signed McCole harden
from the Chiefs, a very fastguy that can you know, use creatively,
So they have weapons around him. It's a very explosive young group around
(03:00):
him. And and uh yeah,I don't think the supporting cast is gonna
be an issue for him, allright, I guess the issue there's a
number of issues with him. NumberOne, you're not quite sure whether or
not he can go the whole year. He's even questionable being go two years.
But um, he how's his personalitymatchup with the New York media.
I mean, he's been playing prettymuch an obscurity in Green Bay, where
(03:20):
he's just worshiped. But he's goingto get ripped, I assume by some
New York media if anything goes wrong. Yeah, I mean it will be
like, you know, he's obviously, you know, very famous. He's
probably the most famous NFL player,So there's gonna be more attention on him.
He's gonna be on the back pageof you know, all the tabloids.
He's gonna have every aspect of hislife followed. But ultimately, if
(03:42):
they're winning, he's going to bethe most popular man in town. And
if they're losing, you know,I think they expect it to be a
disaster anyway, so you kind ofjust you know, take the risk and
you hope that it doesn't turn thatway. What about his health, I
mean, how would you assess it? Did you say he was thirty nine?
Yeah, he's thirty and he youknow, he had some injuries last
year, but um, there doesn'tseem to be any concern about his health
(04:04):
going into the year if he needsto play the whole season, obviously,
but I don't think the Jets areworried about that. So who's who's the
backup now? For Rodgers? It'llbe Zach Wilson, who you know they
drafted second overall years ago and windup being one of the bigger bus in
NFL history. But they think theycan develop him as a backup and he
can learn from Aaron Rodgers behind thescenes. And you understand he's not going
(04:28):
to be able to wear his numbertwelve as a Jet. It's not that
he's not going to be able to. Joe Namoth actually said he could.
He actually in permission, but Rodgersis choosing to go to his number eight
that he was in college. Oh, how about that. I didn't realized
that Namoth. Yeah, I thoughthe just said nope, it's off off
limits. But Namoth, how aboutthat? Now? We had a discussion
(04:49):
this week on the Morning Show thatsomebody had wrote in one of those stories
that we did that Aaron Rodgers isprobably the best quarter back that the Jets
have ever had. How would youcompare him to name it? Obviously,
I mean I wasn't around to watchNameoth I would say. But what I
(05:12):
what I can say is that talent. I think talent wise like Aaron Rodgers
is Arguably it's not the most talented. He's one of the five most talented
quarterbacks to ever played the sports. So I think that is a fair assessment.
His numbers, I think are betterthan Namos were in his career.
It was a different time. Obviously, it's a passing the league now and
in the numbers are kind of wild. But I think, like talent wise
and pure passing ability, I don'tknow that there's been many quarterbacks in the
(05:35):
history of the league they have beenbetter than them. Okay, Zach only
put you on a spot. Um, Do the Jets make the playoffs number
one? And do they make itto the Super Bowl. Number two.
Yeah, I think they make theplayoffs. I'm not ready to say they
make it to the Super Bowl.To AFC is ver very challenging right now.
But if they can even get tothe playoffs and then win a game
(05:56):
or two, I think Jets fanswill take that certainly better than what they've
had for the last couple of years, for sure. Okay, yeah,
I've made the playoffs in the twelveyears, so they'll take it. Oh
my gosh, all right, Zach, Thank you very much. Zach Rosenblatt
with the Athletic here on the JoeBartley Saturday Show. Thanks Zach, You're
no problem. Okay, thank you. Here, I appreciate it. I'm
talking him.
