Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now we celebrate premier Mark McGowan joining us. We
haven't seen you for ages. Hello studio.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
You don't ask me in enough I do you.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Have a standing invitation? We know that.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Lots of chats on the phone, but it's it's not me,
it's you. We both heard that before. But it's nice
to see you in three.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's not you, it's me exactly, it's not me. I've
turned it around.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Well done, nice slip.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
All right, let's talk about high voltage this weekend. That's
such a proponent.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
So what happened back at the start of twenty twenty Now,
it was with this great event called Highway to Hell.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yeah, I can't believe that highway.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
And we did it just just before yeah yeah, And
it was just before it all started, and we held
this event. It was one hundred and twenty or so
one hundred and fifty thousand people on the highway and
they all people flew in from all over Australia to
be part of it. Who love ACDC. I think some
people came from around the world, so big tourism thing.
And I thought to myself, this is great. It's raids

(01:00):
Bond scott Western Australia. We've got to do it again.
So we're going to do it in twenty twenty one.
Obviously we could, so we've reconfigured it. It'll be in
Fremantle this time. There'll be seven bands on trucks leaving
Free Metal Oval. There'll be hubs with lots of bands. Cool.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah that was.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
They'll be doing a circuit around Fremantle. So if you
get into free Meantal on public transport especially, there will
be Freemantal Oval. There will be the Esplant, you know,
the park on the Esplant. Absolutely, it will be South
Beach and there'll be hubs with bands, and then there'll
be the trucks driving around. There's actually fifty six acts
or something and they'll be they'll be predominantly I think,

(01:38):
you know doing ACDC, which is great. So go down,
have a great day, all three have a wonderful time.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah. That day on Kenny Day, Kenny Highway was unreal.
It was incredible. I was walking up and down and
it felt like half a million people.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
To be honestly, it really turned out to be practically
the weekend that divided us from before COVID and after
a B C and a C yeah, d C, d C.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
I'm trying to work out that's before COVID, after point
in time DC in the that's something like that.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
It was a moment in time and it was wonderful.
So we've recreated in Fremantle starts at one with the
band's heading off at too, so only events sort of
start at one, so get there sometimes between one and two,
goes through it all six.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
It's going to be here, very good. The coronation of
King Charles is this weekend. You're not heading over the
governor is Chris Dawson. Do we send a gift? Is
that a thing?

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Is?

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Is there a Hallmark card for congratulations on your coronation?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
What do you do? Yeah? I tucked into Mayra.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Did they have a registrant?

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Got him in their fry new wet pack.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
I don't even air.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Fry's taking it over lovely.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yes, and I'm sure Charles will love it. I just wondered,
you know, no, I did the other day.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
I got it.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
He's got play a bit of extra and the luggage.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
But it was a lovely thing. What a gesture.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
They have to get some sort of adapter there in
but of course you're read adapter yeah, but I've done
my bent. No, I think, I think, I think we
just we send the governor as a rap. So he
got an invite. Apparently when the Queen was coronated back
in nineteen fifty three, you know, they had an event
of six thousand people and every man his dog from

(03:23):
Western Australia, Australia went. These days, it's much more cut down.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
It's different.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
It's very different.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
It's a very different time.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Definitely limited numbers. What he likes that there front the
previous chip and commit camilla a chip food. It is
a national food. It is curry. Yeah, and they'll have
it together. The warm beer mark. The federal budgets, the

(03:49):
federal it's funny. We've got a couple of serious questions.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Send him that you have a drink it, give it
to him hot, some like it.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
The federal budget comeing. How are we feeling about that
from a state perspective? Were you expecting any trinkets or
treats in the federal budget?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Well, our budget comes down next Thursday. There's this next Tuesday.
It's always about making sure that we get support for
some of our infrastructure programs. So that's what we'll be
watching carefully because we have a massive infrastructure budget, as
you know, with railroad, hospitals, and so forth around the states.
So that's what we'll be looking at all.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Right. Something that was announced this week, this is such
a serious thing in this town at the moment. The
state government is injecting over half a billion dollars into
social housing. How quickly do we hope that we might
see some positive effects of that?

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well, that means over the last two years we've added
two point seven billion, So this is on top of
the two two So that means we're building or buying
four thousand new properties and putting maintenance effort into thousands more.
But it's I think I can't remember these act figures,

(05:03):
but I think the last year or so there's been
about a thousand we've are quite or built. But the
plan is to do it as quickly as we can.
But we put in place new construction techniques. So the
other day I went to one of our social homes.
It's got timber frame. Basically it means you can build
a home in about six months.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Because I've been you are subject to the same building
problems as everyone else is.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah, and that's a problem for householders. It's a problem
for everyone. We understand that it's all over the world.
So we're trying to get them done as quickly as
we can, and we'll roll it out as quickly as
we can the resent.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
That's all we can do. I as quickly as you can.
You are subject to the same things, shortages and problems
that everyone is. I like the idea about doing other
stuff up, that's already there too.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Labor shortages. We've timber frames. We're doing modular homes, so
I've been actually seeing them and they come up, we
get them out of the ground, quicker, labor shortages. We've
actually done a program to provide funding for visas for
traders to come here. Ten thousand dollars meet the cost
of their visa and get traders from US into Western Australia.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Some people, unfortunately, we wait you three or four years
to their houses to be finished. A very fairly quick
trip to China. Mark, what about the future? A question
from the boss. He wants to know about the future
of iron ore and the Chinese demand.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
It's all there. Iron ore is one of the staples
of our economy. Getting on with China is important for
security reasons. But also for economic reasons.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
They are our.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Biggest trading partner. We basically sell them twenty times as
much as we buy from them, so we have a
massive trade surplus with them. So that means there's about
two hundred to three hundred thousand West Australian jobs that's
dependent on that relationship, which is a huge number of people.
And so having a good relationship also helps with security.

(06:52):
You don't want to have a hostile relationship with a
nuclear armed superpower region. Maybe not, and so I just
think having a good relationship works for all of us.
So I did a whole range of meetings encouraged you know,
the removal of any trade barriers, the reinstatement of students
and tourism, all those sorts of things. So I think

(07:12):
it was it was very positive when I was up there.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Yeah, well, a lot of positive things happening in the
state at the moment. We know you're very busy and
you can't stay for long, but you know it's all.
But not the Exmouth eclipse. I mean it's not the
Exmouth eclipse, but the eclipse that was seen from Exmouth
that was awesome. If you can organize another one of
those really sooner rather than later, that'd be good.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
It was.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
It happened when I was in China. My son actually
drove up there on his own and did he really
car But the big thing is this Sunday, come down
a free amount of Yeah starts speaking event sometimes between
one and two. Okay, Cat's public transport would be great, fine,
thank you.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Premier just down on Hay Street, Premier, there's some EA
scooters if you want to grab one of those. I
thank you.
