Speaker 1 (00:00):
Nick, welcome back. Great to see him. Mischief the night
we have Phil Maloney stepping in though, and uh pheel
yeah you Pheil, Pheil Phil.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
That's why I always do every time I see you,
feel man. But it's great to have you back here.
And obviously, if anyone wants to get involved with the
show your night, you could text on the Commic Spurial
Health text line at five six six nine zero, looking
forward to interacting with her.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
You.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
We've got a little bit of a jam pack show
here today.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Nick.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
We got a Vinnie Benedetto at seven oh five to
talk about the Nuggets, the movement in the NBA draft
or shall I say lack thereof on the Nuggets side
of things.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
But yeah, I mean, great to see you back in here.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I haven't seen you since I think what was it,
final day of mini camp.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Yeah, man, okay, really quickly, there's a lot that's taking
place with me over the past couple of days.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
And here's a great thing about being on the radio.
It gives me.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
An opportunity flush a lot of this out and deal
with some of the stresses of life. I posted on
social media really quick that over the past two weeks
has been really difficult for me and my face because
we've had so many people pass young people. To be exact,
my formacy of CFO teammate mil Stiegel is somewhere to
(01:10):
Drake University.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
I played soccer. He died at twenty.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Then Noah Tench, who grew up here, close member of
the family. He died an eight of at age eighteen.
Think about this one day before his nineteen birthday. So
that's been tough. And then while I was in airport
waiting to fly back, I get this text message and
I'm like, okay.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Well, hopefully some good news. No it wasn't.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
It was the fact that Rosalind Williams, Darren William's mother,
she had passed. And I'm just like, dude, I mean,
how many more speed bumps can I actually get through?
So being here today, being here with you, Grant and
the listeners, man, this is the way that I'm going
to work myself through this ordeal and try to, I guess,
(01:55):
brighten up my day.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
So thank you and Grant man for being here. I
really appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Grateful to have you and uh, you know, like I said,
Grant makes me smile something, you know, I come in.
I'm I'm tired, I'm exhausting a lot of things in grass.
It's like it's got this energy to him, right, so
Grant can change the move for it.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
But uh, I'm here for you, guys. We pep it up.
We appreciate it and always always Nick always appreciates you
and me.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Hold on out.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Now there there's some good news. There's some good news.
Let me not kind of run right over this. Uh,
the guy to my right, Cody Rod is now part
of the group. And the group that I'm talking about
it's a very yes, yes, very exclusive. I don't know
when Benjamin Albright's gonna get there, and I don't.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Know if it will get there.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
But never.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Well what's the old under on that, the under the whatever?
Speaker 4 (02:44):
The well, So now Grant is married, I'm married, and
and you know you yourself, let's really talk about that
really quickly.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Man.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Unlike Ben, I am a type of person. I love
love and everything associated with it.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
So you and I've had.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Conversations over the years where you were kind of getting
to this point, but now you officially across the finish line.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Tell me really quickly, how do you feel about that?
Speaker 1 (03:10):
I feel great?
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Man, it's uh, look, it's I feel like there's a
level of maturity and responsibility that has to come about it,
you know, with it right Like I'm I'm thirty one,
you know, got married at thirty one. I think that's
a good age to get married at. Because here's the deal.
I feel like if I would have gotten married ten
years younger, right at twenty one. Most of my friends
in high school, I think the downside of living in
a small town, it stays a small town and the
(03:33):
people that you know kind of stay in that circle
of things. So many of my friends once we got
out of high school, they got married right away.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
They had kids right away, like at eighteen, nineteen, twenty.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Years old, and and hate to say it, but a
lot of them are still in the same town, you know,
And I've had a chance to go experience life a
little bit ups downs to all that stuff. I feel
like thirty one is the perfect time to get married
versus like in my early twenties, because once again, the
prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed, and so there's some trial
and era I think you have to go through along
the way, and I feel like I'm best prepared now.
(04:03):
I got the playbook, but I'm still learning, right, I
feel like you probably could confirm this.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
It's an ever going thing. It's like, all right, you're married,
you don't have a maid.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
It's a day to day thing like you have to
continue to grow and evolving. And that's where I'm at.
But the saying does ream true, happy wife, happy life.
I've kind of understood that for a while so well, at.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Least you understood your understanding it a lot sooner than
I did.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
But did you get married? What year? I mean I was.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
About maybe twenty seven?
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Okay, yeah, you prey from a cortex has done developing
at that point, you know.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, And as I tell my wife now, had we
gotten together earlier, it wouldn't have worked. It's not that
I'm not a cheating man. I've never been that type
of guy. But I'm the type of guy that loved
my own space, right, and I had to work until
that moment of being able to share everything all right,
(04:58):
you know what I'm saying, sharing everything with another human being,
and that was very difficult for me to do at first.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
But I will say if any of our.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Listeners, man, if you're going through metal issues right now
or you're dating someone and you're trying to figure out life.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
I'll tell you this, and I truly believe this.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
If my wife met me during my playing days, even
though I just said, it might not have worked then,
but I think and I feel that my career would
have been so much better because when you with your person,
when you find your person, it makes everything about life
that much easier. You don't have to worry about, well,
(05:40):
I'm going to the club to try to meet someone.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
You already have your bad place to meet you to life.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Well, now nowadays said what is it you're swiping left right?
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I don't even know what is it now?
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, I mean you're right, it's it's swipe left, swipe right,
you know, on the dating apps.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I mean it's I feel like it is more difficult
these days. I think to do the social dynamic of
just going out, like maybe back when you were in
you could go out, you know, to a restaurant. You
can go just to a social place, don't have to
be a bar or a club, and.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
You can meet someone.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
It's easy to meet people or you know a friend,
like you get together with friends and there's a mutual
friend there and it's like, oh, who's that? Like, I
feel like it's a little more difficult in today's world
to do that. It's still very possible, but I think
the prevalent thing is everything now was through the device.
I mean everything that we do in our jobs is
through the device now, right.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
But the dating thing is crazy.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
I'm so glad that I owned out have to go
through that ever again, which.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Well, I'm so glad that I don't have to do it.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
An envy well, I don't envy any of the people
who are dating now. But a local team they did
the same thing. They swiped right today, and that being
the Colorado Rockies as they tried to move in a
different direction. And you think about Greg Fisu, who's being
with the team for thirty seasons. Now he's stepping down
and team president and now Walker Montfort it's not taking over.
(06:59):
And when I saw this and I read this story,
I was like, there's a common thread here because Fizu,
before he took over as a president for the Rockies,
he was the vice president of sales and marketing, And
when you think about Walker Montfort, he's working he's the
vice president of corporate partnerships. So when you think about that,
(07:20):
You're like, well, none of that sounds as though you're
moving towards a person who knows how to run this team.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
And for me, that's a big thing.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
And I want to give Walker Marfort an opportunity because
he came up through the organization doing the grunt work,
I mean, being working in groundskeepers. I mean, he wasn't
one of those guys with my dad on the team.
So now I'm going to you know, vice president of president. No,
he learned the business, and I'm hoping that somehow with
him taking over. I know this season has been very
(07:52):
difficult for Rockies fans. I think only eighteen wins this season.
Hopefully Walker can get in turn things around. And for me,
it's going to start with looking at, you know, some
of the lower level things, your farm system, and you know,
obviously the Rockies loss to the Dodgers today, who I
(08:15):
believe has is one of the better organizations outside the
Yankees in pro baseball, but their farm league, how they
run their farm league, how they scout. So hopefully Walker
Marfort can come in and change things around to a
point where now we no longer have to swipe left
right Clever.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Lema Manica tie and really really easily there. I also
feel like this as well. Okay, maybe a big obstacle
here obviously, with Walker getting ready to take over, is
will Dick Montfort over time alleviate some of the control
he has right delegate, Because.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Look, I think that's also an issue.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
You have this fan base calling for you know, them
to sell the team almost every week. And of Course Field,
I mean it's a hospital like today, guess what, you know,
the Dodgers are in town. You know, was there a
lot of Dodgers fans are killing up Course Field. So
as long as that money from the concessions, you know,
the rooftop bar, everything goes in. Like the attendance is
there because I mean, Nick, it's Thursday afternoon, beautiful weather after.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
What we've had the last couple of days crazy.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
That is like people are like, you know what, let's
go have our work meeting at Coursefield today.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
That's that's the appeal to it.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
So obviously you hope that there will be some changes
over time. Will it actually change anything time remains to
be seen. I've seen some good opinions out there about
maybe you bring in people from the outside as well, right,
like New management in a sense, new coaches from the
outside and that way maybe you can foster a you know,
change within they organization versus all right, it's from the
same what do they call it. There's a there's a
(09:43):
termined courts from the same vine or something like that.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
I can't even remember it.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
It's a great court like law in the court.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Like in the court of law, like they say something like,
from the from the vine of the same poisonous fruit.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Right, you want to avoid that as much as you can.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Only seeing some of the same thing that the Manfras
is going through. As far as a guy owning the
team kind of having his fingers and everything and dictating
what's going on with the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
That's kind of what what's happening with Cowboys? Is it?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Not?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Jerry Jones?
Speaker 2 (10:19):
He run the football really well, but you know, I
think that's just got to unload that football a little
more here, Nick, Well.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Unload more than just the football the Cowboys. There is
they're playing the Broncos this year. We get into that
later on as we look at some of the top
receiving groups in the NFL. But I would like to
see Dick Monfrey kind of pull himself back. But what
you mentioned is one of the biggest issues. If you
are an owner, or you own any business, it's about
(10:47):
making money, and right now it's about making money for
the monfers because course Fields is a gorgeous ballpark, and
you mentioned a word. I mean, if you want to
have your corporate meeting somewhere, why not have it over
an adult beverage sitting at the ballpark watching the Dodgers
and whomever.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
How many how many tax right offs you think happened
in course Field every single day?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
A lot tons of them?
Speaker 2 (11:13):
What's the over under on that? What's over under on that?
The over I mean, how are you feeling about it?
I know, uh, you're a resident Rockies guy. You got
he's got the gear on, and I saw Nick giving
you some trouble right before.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
The show, trying to blame me for the Rockies sixty
last week.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Okay, listen, let's keep it.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I'm four and three in attendance this year, so.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
More games in yes, So let's make sure the audience
has contact Before you know, Cody puts this out there
that I'm being negative towards you, grant no.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Usually when you wear a Rocky's hat.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
What usually happens, they lose, right, right, So I mean
you come wearing the shirt today.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
I was trying to bring some good luck, but they said,
do you have rocky socks?
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I do have and perpit you got to try the
socks next time.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Maybe you maybe his socks with you know, the shirt
you wear with the bolo tie.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
You know, Hey, trust me, man, I've tried every combination.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Maybe maybe it's not you. Maybe the curse at Cores
is so strong. Curse of course, nothing can shake it.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Curse of course.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Going back to Walker being announced with his big promotion
within the organization today, I did think it was interesting
that Nick you knew that as well, that he had
worked his way up through the organization and it seems
like he has been molded to take over the team
at some point. And we had Jack Corgan on KA
Sports earlier today and he talked about what he has
(12:38):
heard about Walker as well and kind of how he's
been prepared for this role over time.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
I liked what Walker Montford talked about today when he said,
we need to look at what Milwaukee's doing, what Arizona's doing,
what Cleveland's doing. Teams in similar circumstances and terms of
media revenue, because that is the money driver in baseball.
(13:08):
But those franchises, those markets are in similar circumstances as
the Rockies, and they've done a better job in terms
of drafting and developing talent, making astute trades. And the
Rockies have to see what they're not doing in their
(13:29):
setup that the other teams are and how do they
get there? And I think that's refreshing to hear from
Walker and to be honest, guys, to bring somebody else
in from someplace else, it still has to be Dick
signing off on it. And I'm not saying that father
(13:53):
and son are always on the same page about things,
but I would think Walker, as he develops in this job,
is going to be able to push more at his
father to make changes that maybe an outsider who needs
(14:13):
to be concerned about staying in his job might not make.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
So maybe this is the change the Rockies do need.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
I love that point Jack made at the end about
maybe because he is so close, you know, father and
son relationship, he doesn't have to worry about losing his job.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Maybe some actual changes will happen.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
But this is where if you and Walker monfret based
off that. The piggyback off of that is to say, well,
I'm going to go outside the organization. I've done every
little minor job to get to this particular point, but
I need some outside input. Guys with outside vision and
having those people around you, to me, is going to
(14:51):
build a solid foundation for him and a solid team.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Knowing as though Grant.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
He can't be fired by his fuck well, he can
be fired by his father.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
It will be a bad look.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
But having those outside viewpoints, he can now take back
to his father, like Jack said, where he won't get fired, right.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
He can, he can do that.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
But this team needs outside in affairs because what's taking
place over the past thirty seasons has proven to not work.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
And I mean it's yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
They they have such a trend of hiring from within,
you know, they've always promoted from within the organization, and
I think hopefully Walker will will curb that and bring
in some people from the outside, like you said, And
it reminds me of the Nugget situation with the Crockyes,
you know, we'll talk a lot about that today because
I got some thoughts on that one too.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Yes we do, Man, I don't even get me started.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Woll that'll that'll definitely be something we spend some apple
time on here today. I do think as well, like
where's Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt when you need him?
You know?
Speaker 1 (15:56):
For the fucking money ball approach?
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Good, who knows?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Like the definition of insanity is doing the same thing
over and over and over again and expecting a different result.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Maybe trying something different.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Might actually be a good approach for the Rockies going forward.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Obviously, if you want to share.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Your thoughts and you can text us on the common
Spirit heal text line five six six nine zero real quick.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
NBA Draft, you know we.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Talk about it every year, the extravagance that is the
NFL Draft. There are fireworks, hooplah.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
I tell you what.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I turned on the NBA Draft for one second last
night and I fell asleep.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
It was awful. It didn't watch No, it is not
a concert. It is the worst thing. I think that
that you could ever put on TV.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Is the worst thing like watching.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
I'd rather watch all like the MLB All Star Game
or the NBA All Star Game.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Than the NBA.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Let's let's put it, and I'd rather watch neither of those.
Let's sit on that for just a second and just
think about it. So we know the NFL and you
know their draft is the king right after that, what
would you rather the watch? Obviously you just kind of
taken basketball off the board.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
You have MLB and you have NHL.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Now are what's one of them you're ranking next to
the NFL?
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Well, I mean I would say cornhole on ESPN the
O Show.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
They're putting that on regular that. I love that.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
I could you can give me a couple of cold ones.
I could sit in front of the team like, Wow, okay,
I want to go play cornhole.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Now, I don't feel that way like the over.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
NHL MLB.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
The means it's undefeated here, but I mean we already
knew who the number one overall pick was going to
be for a while. I mean, it wasn't hitting Cooper
Flag goes to the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
We'll talk about, you know, maybe Nico Harris a little bit.
I mean, he.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Uh was the most crucified man in sports for a while,
and now all of a sudden, you know, people aren't
talking about him. And part of that is because maybe
some of the comments as of late by Josh Croncky
that have Nuggets fans concerned on WI talk about that
a little bit later on here as you go about
Broncos Country Night. But I mean your thoughts here necessarily
on the NBA Draft, because I don't know if you
had a chance to catch it.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
The presentation was awful. They couldn't get the.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Right hats for the prospects that got selected to certain teams.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Like it was a disaster.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Nick.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
You know what, I don't think as bad as you
are making it out to be. And I think the
reason being is because we've been spoiled by the NFL Draft,
the traveling circus which is the NFL Draft, So anything
in comparison to it is gonna fall flat. But if
I had to rank if NFL is a what's B,
it would be the NBA. But the NBA in every
(18:40):
other league, they do a poor job of storytelling of
the players leading up to it.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
That is the reason as to why. And from an
NBA standpoint, here's a pro.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Here's a con international players, right, A lot of people
here at home they don't know those international players until
they get here. I was watching Kevin the Gandey and
Stephen A. Smith and there was a kid that came up.
I think it was, uh maybe from from from China
or Japan or whatever. They had no specs on this
player at all, and they were true about like, we.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Don't even know who he is. But so this is
how we're gonna tell it.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
But that's the great thing and the lure of the NBA.
It's a pro and the con. But the other leagues,
they don't do a great job of telling the story
pre draft, of lead up to the drafts.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Well and Nicola Jokic got drafted during a Taco Bell commercial.
Actually tell you all you need to know, folks. Lacos
coach right coming up next, we're to talk about what
bow Knicks and SGA have in common? You know on
Broncos Country Night KOA eight fifty AM ninety four one FM.
Nick I, uh, I was very interested here when we
were talking about some of the things we're going to
discuss today.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
Yeah, kind of brought.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Up, well, bow Knicks and SGA, who just won the
NBA championship have in common. I am curious for your
thoughts here. Where where do you land on this one?
Speaker 4 (19:56):
Well, the reason why I think these guys have a
line in common be because think about what SGA actually
did and how he brought his team together, and that's
what you need. And usually in the world of sports,
you always talk about.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
Glup players, and I know there's a lot of.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Emphasis put on the quarterback position, but it's almost like
being a point guard.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
You have to lead the team.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
And you just think about the calm, cool demeanor that
SGA has.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
And when you think.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
About ball, I think bol still is, you know, has
that fightiness to him, but there's a calmness to him
and his approach to the game. And I think that
is going to be beneficial for the Denver Broncos. But
looking at ok see SGA and bot Nicks and the
Denver Broncos, the biggest thing for me is the defense.
Right when you think about SGA, he was able to
score a lot of points because you have lou Dort,
(20:49):
you had Caruso, right, you had Chet, Holmgren, Heartstot, a
lot of those guys getting those tip outs, so getting
those steals, turning defense into offense. And when I think
about the Bronco goes, this is the same thing that's
gonna happen. Like last year was just kind of a
window into what twenty twenty five could actually be like
and knowing as the SGA got to where he was
(21:11):
and o case he won the title based on their
defense giving them more opportunities. I feel as though Bow
is going to benefit and I'm not gonna say that
he's gonna have like we're gonna put him in.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
A Lamar Jackson category.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
He may be the Broncos MVP, but that's gonna happen
because the defense is going to give him multiple opportunities
to really showcase the ability that we saw last year,
which for me, it was only a small sample size
of what we're seeing of what Bowl is or will
be able to accomplish.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
In my opinion, Okay, can can Bowl get the same
favorable whistle that SGA gets?
Speaker 3 (21:49):
That's my hope.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Excee well.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
With the young guys don't get the favorable whistle now
in the pocket as much anymore.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
But see, Okay, I'll be back in for a second.
Will he get that favorable whistle like a SGA.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
No, But will he have more refs looking out for him?
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (22:10):
Because I think about what we saw on display at
the beginning of the season Bob was in the pocket,
it looked good. But it wasn't truly bo Knicks, it
wasn't Oregon bow Knicks. And then all of a sudden,
we saw the RPOs and we saw him sometimes pulling
the ball down and moving the chains himself based on
his mobility. And because of that, when the refs see that,
(22:33):
and we know that they're gonna protect him because he's
a quarterback. But when they see that you're trying to
make plays, you are that guy, they're gonna give you
the benefit of doubt because listen, look no further than
the guy who's playing within this AFC West in Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
I watched last year as Patrick.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Mahomes became more mobile than we saw him last year
because obviously the Kansas City Chiefs offense.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Wasn't what it was.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
And people may disagree, just Tyreek Hill wasn't there and
Rashid Rice, who is now the new you know Tyreek Hill,
he had his issues. But there was a game last
year San Francisco forty nine ers in Santa Clair where
Patrick Mahomes is outside the pocket and they're looking to
protect the quarterbacks all the time. Patrick Mahomes ran towards asylum.
(23:19):
I remember the defender did what he stopped because he's
at the sideline.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
That's right, and.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
Patrick Mahomes did what rented it for a testdown. So
if Bowl continues to extend plays and use his legs,
whether it's quarterback design plays or he decides to do
it because the play is breaking down, the rest are
gonna look for him and they're gonna look to protect him,
which is going to help the Broncos extend plays and
it's gonna put this offense in a position where they
(23:44):
could be more productive inside the red zone area of
the field that they struggle last year.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
Well, and part of me also wants to know too,
And as we look at this is what do you believe?
Like what are your own personal expectations that you have
for bow here? And you're two as Sean Payton. Obviously
they went through this off season. They added a couple
of weapons R. J. Harvey, JK. Dobbins who they just
recently signed. You had Evan Ingraman in the mix of
tight end. These three players are clear upgrades at those
(24:09):
two and I'd say those two positions where the Broncos
needed production from the most last year that they didn't get.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Well. For me, Cody, it all depends on the signal caller.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
Right, are we gonna make Bow try to stay in
that confined pocket? And for me, it's like no, because
if you look at today's quarterback, just thirty two of them,
think about some of the guys in the AFC, the
Conference of Law, like Grant's guy Joe Burrow, Right, we
know what he's gonna do. We watched him against the
(24:42):
Broncos last year, breaking the pocket, extending the plays with
his feet.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
The idea is, let bo eat in.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
That particular way, because I know this kind of goes
against everything that Champaygnon probably stands for.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
But once again, this is a new NFL.
Speaker 4 (24:56):
You have a quarterback who can't actually move the pocket,
and you brought Evan Ingram here for a reason. Yeah, right,
so we know and as as defenders, when that quarterback
starts to move, the defenders our odds are drawn to
that quarterback right away.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
A receiver may run right past us, and now you
can throw. You can throw the pass to them.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Gotta stay on the hip, man, you gotta stay on
the hip. Medusa. Yes, you turned the stone here. Let's
go out to the common spirit of health.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Text line here text comes in saying, let's not forget
the Broncos would have lost with the last four games if.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
The Chiefs didn't sit their starters.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
I don't think we definitively know that, Like, are we
ignoring that bone Knicks and this Broncos team went into
Arrowhead and ideally what they they did everything they can
to win except have a special teams blunder the block
there that set up. So you're telling me that week eighteen,
even if the Chiefs played the starters, even though they
didn't have much to play for, that they would have
beaten bone.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Nicks and this Broncos team.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
I don't think so. I think Denver still would have won.
I think Denver's gonna win this year. I think Dever's
gonna go on the road on Christmas Day and win.
We'll see where things are at there.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
But I think the.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Reign of Kansas City just being this dominant boogeyman over
the Asus, I think it's over this year.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Yeah, that whole idea of a candy man that and
then that.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
Guy being Patrick Mahomes, Yeah, we're gonna let that dog
the rest because for me, based on what happened in Arrowhead,
even though the Broncos lost on that block field goal,
right and we were watching the game and I have
to say, I think it was binge and Olbryce said,
oh yeah, this is gonna get blocked, and right after
that it got blocked. But based on what the team
(26:34):
was able to do, they took a step forward in
the right direction. Yeah, And knowing as though, once again,
when you played in that game, you had some offensive moments,
especially late in the fourth quarter on that last drive
before the field goal, but your defense helped neutralize.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
What Kansas City was trying to do.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
And knowing as though you have fans shows if you
have this defense, to me, Charhn Payton should look at
every game like it's Winnabo game.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Every game is a Winnabag player views it that way too, yes.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
Because all you know, hey listen, and you may have
heard me say it before, but I look at the
Broncos defense and I call them a guiver. And the
reason I call them a guiver because they always come
through in the clutch. Knowing as though you have that
escape hatch which is your defense, which I think they're
gonna be much better defensively now where they get to
that sixty three sacks it would be great our do
(27:25):
it two years there, it's it's it's very hard. But
I know they're gonna be productive. And I'm predicting, and
I don't know how many turnovers they had last year.
I'm predicting that they're gonna have more five more turnovers
than they had last year.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
I think the additions a jury greenlaw Talanolo who found
I think that plays plays a role into it. I
think as well, you know, maybe we'll see Ridley Moss
come over with some more interceptions this season because being
that corner opposite of PS two, you're gonna get a
lot of targets. That's the nature of the business. I mean,
you played on the defense that had Chat Bailey, and
you know, if you're the other corner, you're like Chat
(27:59):
make look vulnerable.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
So these guys could throw the football. Least let me
breathe a little bit, right. I'm trying to remember dra
Bly Drake Bly, Andre Goodman was one.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Of them, and uh for Jarre Williams the other one.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Hamza Abdullah, Carl Paymar, Carl Paymont.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Carl fox Worth.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
Yep, yes, I remember those days.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
Robbie Most took a lot of criticism last year, especially
after the Cincinnati game, and to me, I don't think
it was warranted, but that dude is a dog and
he's gonna be much better this season for sure.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
I continue our conversation that we're having here about oh Nicks,
the expectations here for year in brtit. You want get
involved in the conversation, you could text on the Common
Spirit helf text line at five six six nine zero.
Looking forward to that. Come up here in a little while.
We're gonna have any benedetto from the Denver Gazette to
talk about the Denver Nuggets, the noise of their offseason
or lack thereof, especially on Night two of the NBA Draft.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
But uh, you know, Nick let.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
We were talking a little bit about the new editions
of Evan Ingram.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
I feel like we got to have.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
A little bit deeper into the running back room here
right Obviously RJ. Harvey Round two selection here for Sean Payton.
They loved what they saw from him at UCF. He
was very much make something out of nothing over there.
He was their offense. If you talk to anyone who
was a UCF fan last season, and they add JK.
Dobbins really the last two days of mandatory mini camp there,
(29:21):
and we're gonna get our first look at him here
in a month and now at training camp.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
The run game's got to be better playing as simple.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
The lack of overall production at this room I think
was a big reason they got held back a little bit.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Look, the fact that they won ten games, to me
was astonishing.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
I think you could cred a lot of that to
the defense in the early part of the season. Obviously
the defense maintained some strong play as the season went on,
but the offense started to get going, but they couldn't
sustain because of the lack of a run game.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Hopefully these two pieces can help out with that.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
Yeah, that's kind of been the talk of the offseason,
getting the run game on track. No Javonte Williams, and
unfairly he was criticized for the Broncos run game not
on track. But being a former defensive guy and who
coached in this league, I look at things a lot
different than other individuals and just follow me here and
you let me know what you think. Because when I
(30:10):
look at the productivity of the running back, it starts
with offensive line protection, it starts with perimeter blocking with
the wide.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
Receivers more poorly.
Speaker 4 (30:20):
It's the scheme that you call and you deploy for
each individual back.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
And I'm basing this.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
All on my experience as a defensive player playing against
some of the best running backs in this league and
Hall of famers, but also being around two guys who
I think are very extraordinary and how they use a
running game, Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan. And last year
we saw both nicks, and as great as both played,
I think as a young guy coming in he was
in a shotgun far too much for me. And as
(30:48):
a defender, I'm thinking, okay, you and shotgun, what's the
percentage of you running the ball? Very low? And I'll
say maybe forty. I'll give you fifty percent. And I'm saying, okay, well,
what can you do from a running back standpoint? Then
you have maybe passing out of that formation, that reck
handoff screens and things like that. To me, no, it
(31:08):
sounds like old school football. But old school football works,
and that means your quarterback is under center right because that.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Opens up play action. And when you open up play actions.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
You catch dbs, you catch linebackers peaking right, you catching
peaking and to me, to get this run game on track,
I want to see both knicks under center a lot
more right, because once you line up in the shotgun
and you five to seven, I'm already thinking, well, chances
are that's probably a pass and you make it easier
(31:39):
to defend if you're outside pass rush.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
What type of passes too, Because I mean, if we're
if we're reading a quarterback this in the shotgun, I'm thinking, okay,
one step, hitch, I'm thinking three step. You're not gonna
really see a five step drop out of shotgun because
unless you fake the you know, the draw to the tailback,
that takes too much time.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
So a lot of it is all right, We're gonna
see the short.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Quick pass were you know, maybe a couple of intermediate shots.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
It's if it's three step dropped there. To me.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
The Broncos and Sean Payton said this in the offseason program.
He said, we the offensive line of on our team
is the one that permeates throughout our entire building, like
it's it's important for what we said. We felt like
last year going back and watching film, we left too
much meat on the bone in the run game. And
I do know some of the issues they had with
the run game last year, and this could also be
(32:25):
a product of it not being under center as much
as you should be. But vision was seeing the holes
or the patients there. You know, Javonte had a really
rough stretch at the middle part of the season there.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
But I agree to you.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
I think that the team could be under center a
lot more, not only to help bone Nicks, but I
think also to help the running game thrive a little bit,
because what does Philadelphia do. Philly does that. Philly's under
center quite a bit. They have good bounce between the
shotgun and being under center.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Well, once again, usually when we talk balance, we were
talking about passing and running the ball, and once again
going back to the concept, Well, the Broncos have to
run the ball, and I've heard so much of it,
and anytime I.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Hear it, I said, well, okay, fine, how do you
do it?
Speaker 1 (33:04):
Then?
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Well, just hand it to the running back. No no, no, no,
no no no no no no no no no, It's
not that easy. You have to have a scheme.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
And for me to know that you have a group
of linemen who've had an opportunity to play together for years,
you lean on that group. I mean, if I'm an
offensive lineman, I would get kind of ticked off that
it's like a fourth and one situation or whatever it is.
You're not banking on us and betting on us and say, Okay, well, we're.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Going to put the ball in your court. This team
is gonna.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Rest and be successful based on how you guys move
on that offensive line and not allowing those guys or
those guys not demanding let us grind out this defense.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
To me, that's what the Broncos need to be.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
They need to take a page out of the Eagles
book once again, this throwback football. Run the frecking ball
or pull Quinn minors, grust and pin and pull, get
them outside, get those backs outside.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
On the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
I think that's the strategy I've been I've been calling
for that.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
We know Sean Payton had run the ball on his
play card there in that Chargers game. There were yeah,
they did run over in the second half there, but
you know he's hoping to run in the second half
of the night too. Of the NBA Draft this night
coming up next to what Vinnie Benedetto of the Denver
Gazette to talk Denver Nuggets. Here on Broncos cuntry on
