(00:00):
Hello and welcome. It's Milwaukee AdmiralsCenter ice with Mike wal Jahowski. I'm
Aaron Sims. The Admirals have justcompleted their first of two I believe three
and threes this season. I'm hopingonly two three and threes this season,
and I think the other one prettylate. Yeah, it is later in
the season. So yeah, Itell you what years ago? Well it

(00:21):
I mean, you know very well. Oh yeah, it was a Wednesday,
Friday, Saturday Sunday, and itseemed we probably had ten of those
in a year, right, Likeit was frequent, and there were so
many dates where we would play athome on a Friday and then Saturday we'd
fly to Houston and then bust toSan Antonio for Sunday afternoon or something like
that. Like that was it wasnot uncommon. Yeah, exactly right.

(00:43):
And now it's my age or whatever. It is just I'm out of shape,
I guess because yeah, hockey,hockey, hockey. I've I'm uh,
you know, I'm glad I canwatch it rather than be at it
tonight. To you, you know, you know, at least you got
to do some car and spots.I mean, I got the Gotamazoo.

(01:04):
You know it was one of those, you know, and then to throw
Toledo in there, Oh my gosh. Yeah, yeah, that's great.
That's a that's the buddy Holly tripthere. Yeah. Uh. Starting things
off here today, we're going tovisit with Admirals general manager Scott Nickel.
He joins us. Now, Hi, Scott, Uh the you you were
saying you have in Nashville place tonight. You're in Nashville to see the Predators

(01:25):
take on the Avalanche and assess andand do what you do as a general
manager. I'm curious what the biggeststretches for you in participating in games and
we can we can talk with well, we can talk about this too,
like is it is it five six, seven days in a row at the
professional level? Seemed it? Hi? Guys, how are you hi there?

(01:46):
No, No, it's it's good. You know. It's lots of
hockey and this is what you putthe work in in the summer for and
you get your teams all situated andknock on wood, we've been fair fairly
healthy up top and uh in Milwaukee. That's when things get a little hairy,
as when we get multiple injuries andthen we're looking for guys to come

(02:06):
up on PTOs and for us inMilwaukee. But no, it's been good.
It was like you, Aaron. We had three and three and then
I flew home after the game.We got Colorado tonight in Nashville, and
then we got Wednesday, we gotCalgary in Nashville, and then Milwaukee plays
Iowa and then yeah, it justdoesn't stop. It's pretty much almost every

(02:28):
night. And then we also haveAtlanta, so the weekends are busy.
I got the three games, yougot Nashville, Milwaukee in Atlanta. We
got to keep an eye on allof them. So but what else would
we do? This is what I'vealways, you know, always played hockey,
always loved it. And then nowI you know, it's a job,
but is it really I really enjoywhat I do. I'm curious,

(02:49):
is this the next best thing foryou? Like everybody wants to be a
player. And I think if youask anybody, coaches, whoever it was,
if they ever played the game ata high level like you did,
playing was always number one? Whatis number two? Are you living basically
number two right now? Yeah?I I you know what, I've loved
my whole path, like I havebeen very fortunate. I wouldn't change my

(03:13):
seven years in the minors and thirteenyears in the NHL. I wouldn't have
changed that. I wouldn't have changeduh, you know, player development,
spend time with my family, andthen just you know, coaching the boys,
and then kind of getting into theassistant GM role and the GM role
in Milwaukee, and uh, itjust you know, it's been great.

(03:34):
It's been It hasn't been like overwhelming. It's been as kind of like a
mi like my career, where youjust slowly staircase and take one step at
a time. And I work withgreat people. We have a great staff,
we have we have a very competitiveteam. We've got some really good
young prospects. So I guess theycould say everything in my world and is
good. Thirteen games into the season, Yeah, and every everyone who's been

(03:59):
talking page and we're a lot,we're young, And how do you feel
early thirteen games and what you're seeingas some of these young kids. I
think you already see some growth. For sure. We haven't had a whole
lot of traction just because of howour schedule was, but now we're kind
of in the we're in the trenchesnow, play three and three. Now
we got what we got three andfour nights or something like that. So

(04:24):
it's now you're starting to see alittle bit of the wear and tear.
Maybe the the energy isn't there.I think we saw that on Saturday.
I think that's just our group goingthrough it. It wasn't even just our
young guys, as our older guys. Maybe they're looking to conserve some energy
on Sunday's games, so they thoughtthey could just put their sticks on the
ice on Saturday and and hockey wasvery humbling, and it'll humble it pretty

(04:48):
quick. But I really really likedour response on Sunday afternoon that we grinded
it out and we didn't have muchenergy left. But I thought we managed
the puck way better and we've gotsome good goals. So it's been good.
It's been uh, you know,we know, we knew there'd be
some growing pains with scoring goals, and we did that at the beginning of

(05:08):
the year. I think we playedwhat we have maybe just over a goal
of game for a little while there. Now the goals now, the scoring
is starting to ramp up a littlebit. Now we just gotta you know,
you plug one hole and then yougotta you know, we're giving up
a little bit too many. Sonow we've got to dial it back a
bit. But this is this iswhy those everyone's in the American Hockey League

(05:30):
just to kind of get their gamea little bit more consistent. And I
have like the growth on a lotof our you know, young players and
even our our bubble guys too.So it's all been good. It's hard
not to get excited when you lookat the prospects. You know, I
looking through the prospects last night,I'm going, boy, I tell you
what, business has got to beopen, or somebody's got to be you
know, looking around to say, hey, I mean there's a lot of

(05:51):
defensemen in Milwaukee. We better youknow, call up Scooter, you know,
call up Very. But I mean, you know, it's incredible.
I mean, you know, notonly do we have solid that you know,
have a good defense in Nashville, well you got a ton of prospects.
I mean, you know, Imean, guys, you haven't seen
I mean, we just got ourfirst look at red pro crap. But
I mean and until games okay, and came back and you get you got

(06:11):
Graham Sword, You've got Molinich. You've got man here, madire. I
mean, it's unbelievable. I mean, the amount of guys and that's not
even talking about any of the collegekids. I mean you got to salivate
sometimes and go out. I mean, you know, knock on wood something.
We got some health going on.These guys are gonna be We're gonna
have a solid defense here for along time. Yeah. I think that's
what give our credit to our scoutsand our our amateur scouts and our you

(06:34):
know, college free agent scouts. You know, it's just that's what you
want. You want internal competition. You want these guys to kind of get
out of their comforts only you wantthem to elevate their game, and they
are. Well, I'm excited aboutour d as well. You know,
I love seeing Delli go up.You know what a great story of you

(06:55):
know, you saw his interview. How much it means to them. And
I don't think we can ever forgetbecause we're in the business how much these
kids and their families put into thisand to get an NHL game and play
in the NHL like that is ismagical, Like it just it makes it's
makes your heart feel warm, likeit just I was really happy for Deli
and everything was super positive with them. And then Stastny went up and he

(07:20):
played a fantastic game. He's gonnaget another game tonight against Colorado. So
this is what it is. It'sa little bit of a dress rehearsal for
some of the young guys get upthere and they they've all really shown really
well. So that puts a lotof you know, that puts even more
pressure on management too, you know, to see the whole outlook of the

(07:41):
four year plan where everybody is andthings are good, things are, you
know, that's what you want tosee out of some of your young guys.
And then we just got to mixin a few more wins up here
where I think we've our records shouldbe better in natural than it has been.
But but they're competitive. They hada great game Saturday against Chicago and
hopefully we'll have another one tonight againstColorado. Scott Nickel, the Admirals general

(08:03):
manager, joining us it's Milwaukee AdmiralsCenter. Rice. We talk about the
prospects here and we're going to visitwith Kevin Wall coming up in a little
bit. Kevin was drafted four yearsago by Carolina, didn't sign there,
didn't work out. That happens frequently, went to college at Penn State,
had a fantastic career there, andsigned with Milwaukee. What did what did

(08:24):
you see in him? And whatare you seeing with him right now?
Well, we we've liked Wally fora while. He uh, you got
he got drafted and then because we'vewe've watched him at Penn State, because
we've had Chase McLain has been atPenn State, and then Ethan Finks just
went to Penn State this year.So and he's a Rochester kid, so
I knew him from then. Butit's your first year pros heart, you

(08:48):
know, you're you're trying to stayin the lineup, You're trying to showcase
yourself within the system. He's beenvery solid for us. He's good on
the walls, the puck seems tofind him in the offensive. Only has
enough skill to make plays as youcan see on the power play. So
he's just he's just kind of roundingout his identity of what he wants to

(09:09):
be in the in pro hockey, and he's making it hard on all of
us, all the coaches and especiallyat the American League level, you have
a few extra guys sitting in thestands and chomping at the bit to jump
in there. And he has everyopportunity's he's been given, he's taken it.
And I was super happy to seehim get a his first goal last

(09:31):
game last night, So that waswell deserved and well earned. So hopefully
there's many more in his toolbox.Yeah. Absolutely, And another guy too
that I that I want to highlight. And I shouldn't say he's lost in
all of this, but I mean, you think it was two years ago,
and with a number of first rounddraft picks in Milwaukee, it's easy
to focus on one or two,not all seven. But Zach LaRue,

(09:54):
my goodness, his backhand is asgood as I've seen he's He's scored a
couple of backhand goals this year thatare just phenomenal. And and the kid
doesn't quit in his work. Youmentioned the work on the walls, the
play he made to get the gamewinner last night, his work on the
wall, shielding the puck and findingthe right guy at the right time.
This is the look there, andyou saw what I saw. Second effort

(10:18):
is second and third efforts are fantastic. You know, he's got a good
motor on him. He's first onpucks, he's strong, he gets low,
he gets underneath guys. He hasenough skill to hang on to box
and make plays. He's been verygood for us for a first year player.
He just has effort. Yeah,I guess that's all I like.

(10:39):
He comes to play every shift issometimes and he has an impact on the
game, good or bad some nights, but he has an impact on the
game. So that's what you knowwhat you're going to get from him.
He might have an off night, but you know his effort is going to
be there. So that is avery good quality to have. And then
he makes is in with his tenacityand he's got some play making ability,

(11:03):
and he can and he can finish, and he's not scared to take the
puck to the net. I thinkevery game he has one or two rap
rounds. He beats the dean, cuts the seam and he goes drives it
right to the post. You know. So those little things they don't they
might not show up on the scoresheet, but in the overall picture,
that's a that's a big plus inour book. And you look at the
way that that you guys are runningthe lines right now, excuse me,

(11:26):
Carl, with Kemmel and cal O, Riiley and LaRue like that, trio
is perfect. You've got you've gota guy that will work in the corner.
You got maybe the smartest player inthe American Hockey League over the last
several years. And you've got Kemmelwho can shoot the puck and he's certainly
not shy of taking a bump either. Like that trio could do some damage

(11:46):
if they're stuck together for a while. Yeah, I think in the last
probably three games, minus probably theSaturday game, they've been one of our
better lines. Like they are startingto get some chemistry. Cal's starting to
get some some action. He hada little bit of a slow start,
but now he's you know, buthe does offensively. I guess he could
say he had a slow start, but just in the face off circle,

(12:07):
how he supports a puck in hisown end, how he makes plays like
he's been really good there. Butboth those two young guys, they got
young legs and then get in onthe fore check. And that's what I
you know, we just talked aboutZach, but also that's what Kimmel.
He's really good at that too. He's for so called score skill guy.

(12:28):
He's not scared to get his nosedirty, you know, he gets in
there, had a little bit ofI know he's a No. Four.
I know he could be playing juniorhockey right now, but we can't forget
that, you know. So sometimeshe's he might be over his skis.
But I thought that he was goingto be like that in the playoffs last

(12:48):
year and you would never have knownthat. So he's just got to keep
working through some games. He's notgoing to score and he's gonna He's had
a couple of games where he hasn't, so all his other parts of his
game have do you improve, butthey have been like he's been and his
effort has been there as well,so that that line has been good.
They've been They've got a little bitof everything on that line, and they're

(13:11):
dangerous in they're all areas of theice. If you're living Wisconsin, Scott,
you're here. All you hear isall of the Packer fans saying,
boy, you know, they shouldhave have some veterans to help, you
know, mentor the young kids, and why don't we have a veteran receiver?
Do you guys, Obviously Nashville feelswith with Troy Grossnick on the roster,
kel Rally on the roster, andand you know in the veteran defenseman

(13:33):
that we have obviously that is notthe Nashville predator way you guys see him.
Do you guys really do see thevalue? Explain how how you see
the how how important it is tohave the veterans mentor in the young kids.
I think I think you could probablyadd that Anthony Angelo into that group
too, I think and has beenreally good for our young guys. Uh,

(13:56):
he's taking Camel under his wing thatthey live together. Like all the
things you see maybe you don't seeon the ice, is a lot of
it's off the ice and the positionthat I'm in because I and then we
have great scouts and everything, butyou know, the and our player development.
The position I'm in, I getto see our prospects. I get
to work with our prospects that arein junior and college and all our development

(14:20):
staff, so we kind of knowtheir game when they're coming in. So
then now I can go to thepro guys. I'm like, hey,
these are the holes. Can weget some veteran leadership, some guys who
can score, some guys who area little bit heavier without taking away some
of the opportunity from our younger guys, and then we kind of build our
team that way. So it insulatesa little bit. Like for Kimmel,

(14:43):
we wanted Amy Novak type of player. So what other player out there who
thinks the game makes plays like that? And then cal Riley pops on our
radar, you know, so justlittle things like jen Kelsey had a great
year last year, is up mostof the year. What two way center
can score, check play in everysituation, win face offs that can help

(15:03):
Svetchkov learn how to win face off. So those are it's just not going
out and signing the sexiest guy. It's like, I find you, you
do your homework, what you havecoming in. How can we develop our
our prospects but also help our ourguys who want to get to the NHL.
I'm not saying all these like jenKowski to Angela like their dreams to

(15:24):
play in the NHL. So there'sa balance there of you know, being
a good mentor helping your own gamesso you can be the next guy called
up, and also helping with someof the young guys. So I don't
know a long answer, I guess, but it's been it's been working for
the last few years. And youknow, say, ever since we've been
with Milwaukee, I think we've hada really good group of veteran guys and

(15:48):
a lot of really just a lotof good people there and I think that
goes a long way well. Andto go along with as Scott Nickel joining
us, a lot of those guysthat were brought in as veteran presidents have
found their way back to the NationalHockey League in one fashion or another.
I think of you know, Tonoritya Colum Blackwell was a bit of a
he'd been around a little bit inthe American League and that probably never really
got a real chance at the NationalHockey League. But those types of guys

(16:12):
have have used it to their advantageand we've had really good luck with those
guys. And those are the thoseare the guys we try and target is
with there. They have a windowof maybe three or four years pro this
is their their chance to kind ofkick the door down they come in and

(16:32):
you know, you just named afew, even like Keeper Sure with for
us last ye right, bull timeNHL player right now. He's playing on
the second line with Novak and Evangelista. You know, so like those are
the those are the great stories andgetting guys second chance, third chance,
and and identifying these players that willkind of their style of play, how

(16:53):
we how we play, and thenthat kind of springs boards them up.
And uh, it's a community effortfor sure. You know, from our
coaches in Milwaukee, development staff, all our scouts, the players, they
do it. It's not us.They're the ones that put the time in
and and they go through the longbus bus rides and they're you know,

(17:15):
so they Kudos to them. Youalways like to see kids over chief get
to their their plan, what theyhave, their I guess, their dream.
I guess you could say. Sowhen I make that phone call and
say, hey, welcome to NationalHockey League. You're going up catch a
flight here in three hours. You'replaying tomorrow night, those are the best

(17:37):
calls, no doubt about that.Scott. Enjoy the game tonight, hopefully
for a Predators win. Thank youso much for your time as always,
we really appreciate it. And happyholidays too, all right, thanks to
you guys too. Thank that's Admiralsgeneral manager Scott Nickel joining US Nashville playing
host of Colorado tonight in Nashville.Obviously, you just heard them say Spencer

(17:57):
Stasney will be playing Tonight's so excellent, Yeah, excellent. I heard.
I read Luke Evangelista is going tobe a healthy scratch tonight. Does he
learns from the in a suit thisevening as to how things work. But
it's to be expected. Time thetime right, No been just to everybody.
We're going to take a break whenwe come back. The great Darren

(18:18):
Pang is going to join us.You're listening to Milwaukee Admiral Center Ice.
Welcome back to Milwaukee Admiral Center Icewith Mike wil Jahowski. I'm Aaron Sims.
It's been a while since we spoketo this guy. He's made a
lot of changes in his life. He're incredible, big change now working for
the Chicago Blackhawks, of course, doing excellent work on TNT. He's a
former Admirals goaltender Darren Pang. Darren, it's great to talk to you.
It's been a while. How areyou. It has been too long and

(18:41):
my apologies have been a have beenbusy. It's you know, change is
good in life, and this hascertainly been a challenge and moving here to
Chicago and getting things organized here withthe with the Hawks and and what have
you, and then continuing on withCNT. But that's that's what keeps us
young, isn't it. I mean, I think fact I've been asked the
question more and more now about playingin Milwaukee my first year of pro because

(19:03):
being in Chicago now I run into, you know, a lot of people
that I haven't seen in twenty fivethirty years, even even guys like Cliff
Quarrel that I've seen several times now. And and so now it's been nice
talking back to the old eighty foureighty five Milwaukee Admirals and talking Blackhawk history
in Blackhawk Hockey that year Wood talksabout it, that year was Cliff and

(19:26):
Jim Pappens switch spots and all ofthis stuff, And what was it like
for all of you guys? That'sit sounded like it was just a rough,
rough year. But I'm sure youfound a way to have some fun.
But I just how rough was it? Oh? We had a blast.
Don't don't kid yourself. We definitelywe had fun. Whether it was

(19:48):
you know, going going sledding, and going then from there to the Waterfront
Pub to to Wednesday's feeding more ofthe eel over there. I mean,
there's a lot of things that wedid that were you know, that were
fun, because the problem was thatwe weren't competitive enough of a team.
And that's that was the discouraging partof being the number one affiliate of the
Blackhawks and then going down to theIHL and a lot of our players.

(20:12):
I was not a pro yet. This is my first year pro, so
I came from major junior A.I didn't know this what the standard was
or what guys were expecting. Butfor me to go there and and I
looked up to so many of theseguys and that had played in the American
Hockey League in Springfield, and andincluding you know, Boydy and Jim Ralph
and these guys, and and Ithink they were they just didn't have their

(20:33):
the respect for I don't think forthe league, and uh, you know,
and instead of going down there andshining and and showing the Hawks that
they're ready to play up in Chicago, I mean, we were a shell
of that. And that that wasthe embarrassing part, I think for all
of us. But but but youknow what we we a lot of us
became good friends afterwards, and Godbless our friend Randy Boydy. You know,
he passed a couple of years ago, but I stayed in touch with

(20:56):
Jimmy Ralph and and whenever I runinto anybody, they still call me Spank
And uh that going back to mynickname there, I always know when someone
yells around the corner, hey,Spank. I know that I played with
them somewhere and that nickname started rightthere at the Mecca in Milwaukee, playing
for the Admiral, isn't you know? Plus you know I haven't seen too
many goalfenders actually fall asleep in theluggage rack of the bus. I mean,

(21:21):
not any of them. Darren usedto do that on occasion, didn't
you well you kidding me? Woji, I do it? I mean that
was my plan. A nice bigpillow the walkman and uh and a nice
blanket and uh. I was stillI still could cliff Coral every once in
a while. That one trip, remember I think we were heading to Fort
Wayne or something woj we had wehad to stop basically on the road.

(21:42):
The snowstorm and the blizzard was sobad, and yes, half the team
went into uh jeez, I thinkit might have been an y MCA or
something that we were able to getsome of the guys there, and the
rookies had to stay on the busand they tried to keep it as warm
as they could and I turned aroundand Cliff Corarel stole my two pillows and
he was sleeping up front. Istill laugh at that many but those are

(22:07):
those are the fun times, youknow, you know, on the on
the road. I just I doa podcast now with Catherine Tappan and it's
called Back to You and we've juststarted. We were only five episodes into
it, but one of our guestswas Cole Hammil's and the World Series MVP
and Champions, and he actually said, you know, being in the minors
and being on fourteen hour bus rideswas the best thing that ever happened to

(22:30):
me. And I was was sorefreshing to hear somebody talk about it like
we do in hockey, because that'sjust the normal for us playing junior a
hockey or then turning pro and beingin the buses and and that's where the
camaraderie builds, and that's when youfind out you know what you were like
as a teammate and and and howyou can keep the energy up and have
a good attitude and be self motivated. So I go back and think very

(22:53):
fondly of those bus tricks. Well, you know what, Darren, what's
been great for me is I've beenaround for you know, all the the
handheld devices and YouTube and all ofthese things and FaceTime and whatever else that
they that the players have and havecome out video games. The last couple
of years, there's been a returnto a card game in the back and

(23:14):
things like that, and that justmakes me so happy to see things like
that. Thank goodness. Yeah right, and if it's happening here, it's
got to be happening in the thirtyone other American Hockey League teams. That's
fantastic. Well, it definitely doeson the definitely does on the plane for
sure. Yea. And I thinkthe uh, you know, the card
games, knowing how to play cards, teaching somebody how to play cards,

(23:37):
and you know, like like I'mI'm a terrible card player, but I'm
not a bad Uker player, soI would venture off and playing Uker and
uh get whoever, you know, whoever the guys are like, when I
made it to the NHL, thereare there. I am playing with Glenn
Cochran, Ben Wilson and Keith Brown, And every time we got onto a
plane, which then we didn't haveour own plane were we were on a

(23:57):
United commercial flight and and I rememberBen Wilson taking some guy in a suit
with a briefcase and pushing them aside, saying, no, no, you're
going to sit over there. We'resitting here and this guy's like, who
are you guys anyway? And we'removing people around, and Denny Savard behind
us because he's in the smoking sectionand he's one seat behind us. I
mean, you think back at thecamaraderie that you build during those times you're

(24:19):
playing cards and having fun and thentalking about what happened the night before and
just having some laughs and making sureyou don't say it too loud so the
coaches don't hear you. So that'sthe best part of the whole ride and
the journey to either being in theNHL or not being in the NHL.
But I think guys that don't evenmake it are stilled. They're the same
guys that they talk about it.It doesn't matter what level you get to,

(24:41):
that is the game right there. The camaraderie of your teammates is the
game for me. Darren Pang joiningus. So let's talk a little bit
about the game going on right now. You're working every night, you get
to see Connor Badard. What isthat like? Is it the media requests
when you're on the road. Igot to imagine are crazy? But watching
him, it seems like he's livingup to everything as an eighteen year old.

(25:04):
Well, absolutely he is. Imean, you know, this didn't
just come as a surprise to toConnor Bdard. I think that's first and
foremost. I mean he's been,he's been you know, seen him probably
you know, on the radar eversince. He you know, was able
to play with that exceptional status tobe in the w HL at fifteen and

(25:26):
World Junior Championships and winning a coupleof goals and win in the U eighteen
goals as well, breaking the recordof you know, most points in a
World June. So, I mean, what I'm saying is that this kid
knows what he's getting himself into. And I think maybe the overwhelming part would
have been the first couple of games. I mean, you know, we
started off in Pittsburgh. He playsagainst his his his idol growing up.

(25:48):
It's on nationally televised game on ESPN. The next night, goes into Boston,
plays against the powerful Bruins. It'son TMT. Everybody wants to piece
him. He did three interviews ingame one, three interviews in game one,
like that's that's a little bit muchfor me, but that's that's the
way it is. And then ingame two he did he did two interviews

(26:08):
in game in game two, soyou know, then we joined forces.
Uh the you know the Hawks didin Montreal nationally televised Hockey Net in Canada
game, they all wanted a pieceof them, uh Monday Toronto. Uh,
they worked that, and I thinkthat was a it was a sports
Net national game. They wanted apiece of them, and so, you

(26:29):
know, and then he went toColorado for a if I'm not mistaken,
for a ESPN game, So theywanted another piece of them. So,
I mean, the kid has handledit beautifully, to be quite honest with
you. And he's got his headon the right way. He's a hard
worker. He told me, I'ma bit of a hockey nerd. I
said, you're not a hockey nerd, I said, because you watch hockey
and work hard at hockey. Thatdoesn't make you a hockey nerve. That
makes you a passionate and self motivatedhockey person that loves the game of hockey.

(26:52):
So he's, uh, he's good. He's gonna he's gonna be outstanding
when he gets surrounded by even betterplayers with better hockey IQ. You know,
the hockey nerds are the ones likeme who've played the puck do Oku
and the Immaculate grid and try toget to the zero percent of the you
know, try to get the lowestscore possible on all nine nine squares there.
I don't know if you've played thoseor not, but that's I'm not

(27:15):
sharp enough for that. That's whatwe do. I'm curious. There have
been we've seen Jay Woodcroft let goalready in in Edmonton. I know Lane
Lambert is on the hot seat,or so they say. If you read
the Twitter comments Dean Everison, everybody'sup in arms about what Minnesota's doing.
Bill Garan was talking there. Doyou see these changes happening quickly? If

(27:38):
they do, I just I'm justcurious, you know, you know,
guys like Lou Lamarrello and and BillGaron certainly better than I do. Do
you think Lou Lamorello reached Twitter?Heck no, do you think he'd be
influenced by anybody? Not a chance. I mean, you know, I
know the part that you would lookat is if the if the team has

(28:00):
lost its soul, you know, but the team has lost it's it's it's
energy to get to the rink.If the team starts out flat every single
night, then that's obviously an issue, and that's where a change is imminent.
But I mean, if you've gota group of players that that's what
they are like for me, youknow, like Lane Lambert's got a group
of players that they're not going tobe the fastest team in the world.

(28:23):
They've got to win games two toone and three to two and lean on
a great goaltending. So you know, I've seen them recently. I was
in I was actually in Vancouver fora TNT game, and you know,
byan large was a pretty good game, and I think they felt pretty good
about a lot a lot of theirgame. But I would say, you
know, you hit the beginning orthe middle of December, I I'd say

(28:45):
that I mean that's the time you'reeither making a change or you're you're saying,
well, this is what we've gotand we're just gonna We're gonna live
with what we've got or die withwhat we've got. On the other side
of it, I think there's anotherteam, oh, you know, like
Minnesota, Like I think, youknow, I think that there's been some
changes made by Billy Garan and andI don't know, Dean eversince on the

(29:07):
hot on the hot spot. Ithink it's a good team, But that
one's an interesting one for me.I'm just not sure where they're going right
now. And sometimes gms will lookat the Saint Louis Blues as a great
example of nineteen and if you've madea few changes and you feel like you're
turning in the right direction, butit's just a matter of maybe some players

(29:30):
checking their egos at the door, some players, you know, getting back
to the level that they should beat, and you've had faith that they
will get back to that level. Then you can always look at a team
like Saint Louis and say, youknow what, we're going to hang in
here with this group. I believein them, and I believe that the
Central Division isn't that strong. Otherthan I guess you'd go. You go
Colorado and Dallas right and take yourchances on battling the rest of the teams

(29:55):
and seeing if you can get awildfire spot. It must feel great for
you to be back home technically, and I'll be back as a member where
it started, where it all startedfor you. You know it it is.
It's a long time ago, andit doesn't happen often for people.
And I often say that I'm appreciativeof a team wanted me as bad as
Chicago wanted me, and it itreally did start with their president, Jamie

(30:17):
Faulkner that but that came right fromRocky worts And and Danny Wurtz And and
to have the relationship with with bothof them and having them make phone calls
to you and let you know howmuch they want you back in the city
that you started. It is somethingthat you know, not a lot of
guys get to experience that, andI'm forever grateful. I'm just very sad
that you know that Rocky I sawhim two weeks before I passed, and

(30:41):
it was something that nobody ever expected. And so that that to me is
sad. I would have obviously lovedto spend more time with Rocky, especially
as he's the man that said,we're going to bring you back here into
the fold. So my last conversationswith Rocky were the ones that convinced me
that this was the place I shouldbe. And so so here I am,
and I'm hopefully we can carry iton with a great deal of pride

(31:03):
and make Rocky feel feel good aboutit, and Danny the same way,
because he's got a he's got alot of responsibility on his hands, taken
over for his legendary father, andand I'm looking forward to working alongside Danny
and and being part of this broadcastand especially being a kind of a soundtrack
for you know, for a guylike Connor Bodard. And there's some good
young players. So the other thingis, I've got a Wisconsin boy is

(31:26):
my play by play guy, SoI gotta I gotta deal with Chris Boster's
you know, he's uh, healways reps the Wisco people very well.
So I've got a lot of alot of work to do there, you
know, I mean handling those Wisconsinpeople. You know that, absolutely right,
you bet absolutely right. It's greatto talk to you, Darren.
We thank you for your time asalways, look forward to talking to you
real soon. Enjoy the week, enjoy the holiday, safe travels, all

(31:51):
of that stuff to you. Iappreciate it. Hey, my pleasure,
happy, happy Thanksgiving to everybody youguys, everybody that's listening, and uh
and take care be safe there.Okay, that's uh Darren Pang. You
can see him on t n Tthe Blackhawks obviously, as he mentioned the
podcast with Catherine Tappan. They getit where you're where you find your podcast.

(32:13):
So yeah, he's he's the bestthere is. We're going to take
a break. We'll come back withKevin Wall. You're listening to Milwaukee Admirals
Center Ice. Welcome back to MilwaukeeAdmirals Center Ice with Michael Jahowski. I'm
Aaron Simms. This young man whojoins US now Admirals forward Kevin Wall,
scored his first AHL goal, firstprofessional goal yesterday. It was also named
the first Star of the game.It was a big one. It was

(32:35):
a big one, two to onewin and he joins US now. Kevin,
Thanks for the time. How wasit getting that one off the off?
Your was there? A pressure. Were you feeling any pressure? The
monkey off the back so to speak? Uh, yeah, well, first
I want to say thanks for havingme on. You know. I it's
funny because I actually asked that questionquite a bit since last night. I

(32:58):
wouldn't say that it was pressure.Definitely monkey off the back. Felt felt
obviously pretty good. Glad we gotto win as well, or else that
wouldn't have been as fun. Butyeah, no, it was. It
was overdue in my opinion. Butthat's also just because the standards I hold

(33:19):
myself to. I think with therole that I'm playing this year, I
don't feel as if I, youknow, need to be the guy that's
boring every night. But I think, you know the way that me must
and weather be played last night playingfour nine like just trying to get tucked

(33:40):
on that just play the right wayhit guys. So it's always nice to
get roaring every once in a while. But yeah, no, it felt.
It felt really good and settles thein more Gidney confidence. So it
was awesome. Yeah. Originally draftedby Carolina in nineteen sixth round, that
didn't end up playing there. Probablywe could have signed with anybody. Why

(34:04):
Nashville yeah, So I think itwas tough because the rules with NT double
A, I gotta wait until Augustfifteen for free agency, So it was
it was a lot long summer ofnot knowing what I was doing. But
I think, you know, Iobviously Scotty, I know Scottie Nickel from

(34:27):
previous years when he was in Rochester, and you know, he actually ran
a couple of our skates when Iwas younger. The connection with him,
he's awesome. And uh, youknow, obviously Milwaukee had a great year
last year, great teammates, allthe guys are awesome. It's the great
place to play. So I justthink, you know, when the opportunity
came, and originally they said theydidn't have any room, and then they

(34:51):
came back and told me they havea spot, and I was more than
happy to jump right on that. And I'm glad I did. I mean,
it's been awesome. Everybody's awesome. So I just think the timing of
it and just a great spot forme to go. So it just worked
out for me. Within Emily youmentioned, and Kevin Wall joins us here

(35:12):
at Milwaukee Adpmeral Center ice waiting tillAugust fifteenth. Can you talk to teams
before then or does the period oftalking and signing all open at August fifteenth.
Yeah, So, out of respectto Carolina and with talking with them,
not really allowed to talk with teamsuntil my writer essentially dropped. But

(35:37):
we had kind of made an agreementthat they weren't going to sign me.
So if I kind of was ableto tell other teams like, hey,
I'm not going to be signing withCarolina, do you have any room with
you guys? And stuff like that, So it was there was something that
I knew I was going to belate to the game, so it was

(35:59):
nice of them to allow me tokind of see just see what my options
were, which is really nice. So, boy, that's a stressful summer
though, isn't it. Kevin?Yeah, Yeah, it wasn't. It
wasn't my favorite summer. But tryingto keep yourself busy and try not to
think about it. But you gotfamily and friends all ask and you know

(36:22):
those questions can get pretty old.Yeah, well I bet I bet Kevin
Wall joining us. So when you'redoing that and you're instructing your agent or
your advisor or maybe you're making thesecalls too, I don't know, but
I mean, you got to havea lot of irons in the fire.
I mean, I'm assuming you gotto call people in Europe. I mean,
and I mean Europe. My goodness, they're probably in training camp already

(36:43):
for three weeks by the time Augustfifteenth roll around, Like it's it's there's
a lot to think about. Yeah, no, definitely, but yeah no,
Primarily it just went through my agent, Ivan calling Katy was thinking about
Europe. To be honest, youknow, I knew, I knew what

(37:06):
kind of player I was, andI kind of had some confidence that I
was going to be able to signin somewhere here in North America, and
that's kind of what I wanted. So, like I said earlier, just
like one I'm skinny Nick or Paulthat said that they had room for me,
I was very fired up and justexcited to have a place to call

(37:29):
home. You know. It was, like we talked about, it was
definitely a stressful summer. But whenI finally kind of stealed the deal,
I was really excited and it wasjust eager to get out here. Six
games into your pro career, anything, you know, any big surprises in
the pro game versus a college gameanything. What's what's uh, what's different

(37:50):
to you? I mean, youknow, it's just hockey hockey. Yeah,
well I guess, uh. Ihave teammates with kids now, so
that's a little bit of a difference. I think out of my four years
at school, the only thing closestto that we had a guy who was
engaged last year. But no,it's it's awesome. I mean, this

(38:12):
is what you dream of, right, so kind of feels like it's almost
like a fantasy world. Just beingable to play with guys like Carol,
Riley, Gravy Q, Djanko, like just all Gary, just all great
guys. And I think the gamegoes quicker. Obviously, everyone's extremely talented

(38:37):
and skilled and aki IQ's off thecharts, so players are just made faster,
and I think it just makes thegame go quicker. And I obviously
I trained with a lot of guysback home who have played in the HL
for years, and they gave metips and stuff on like how the league
were and the differences between college andpro. So had an idea of what

(39:00):
you expect coming in. But uh, yeah, obviously once you get here,
you got to experience it for yourself. In action. No, it's
been awesome. I mean, speedtakes you maybe a game or two to
get used to and just kind ofhow things work. But never played a

(39:22):
three and three before, so thatwas a little interesting. I was just
gonna say, you, being acollege athlete, you're certainly used to back
to backs, but three and threeis it is a different animal. I'll
tell you what. Not many peoplein this league are used to them anymore.
They used to be so common, but not anymore. It's it's a
gink. Yeah. I think casehe was saying, like Providence has ten
of them every year, so right, at least we only have I think

(39:44):
two this year. Yep, that'sright, that's right. But it's I
mean, my goodness to stay sharp. And you could see kind of yesterday
with the Admirals like you played playedextremely well, but you could see at
the end of the game that maybethe team was running out of fuel here
a little bit. Yeah, AndI think that's what ah Kat tried to
stress to us. He kind oftold us, if you just play the

(40:05):
right way, you're gonna get alot of opportunities, because I mean,
it's a it's a grind. Theseason in general is a grind, and
then you know, you play threeand three and by the third game,
like you said, everyone's pretty tired. Because I'm pretty sure Chicago had played
the night prior as well. Soif you just stick with your game and

(40:28):
someone's gonna someone's gonna make a mentalerror just out of exhaustion, not because
they're a bad player, but that'sjust the way it is. So we
just wanted to focus on not tryingto do anything cute. Just play the
game and you'll get chances. Sowell, you took advantage of it yesterday.
A huge goal, your first oneas a pro. It's it's good
to get it like that, right, because I mean, you don't first

(40:50):
goal is a first goal. Butif it bounces off your neck or it
bounces off your hip or something likethat, it's not as cool a story
as slapping it right off the faceoff. Well it's cool. I think
I would have taken it no matterhow it came, but it was nice
to actually get a stick on itand shoot it. Yep, very good,
Kevin, thanks so much for thetime. I really appreciate it,

(41:12):
and uh, we'll see you atthe RINKA. Appreciate it. Kevin Wall
joining us. We're going to takea break. We'll come wrap things up
next. You're listening to Milwaukee AdmiralsCenter Ice wrapping it up tonight Milwaukee Admirals

things Wizard baby, yea, allthings Blizzard and also a winning Weekday Yes.

(41:37):

December sixth, there you go,so yeah, visit Milwaukee Admirals dot com
for tickets. Then the Admirals arehome on Saturday night, six pm face
off against the Rockford ice Hawks forthe first time this year in Milwaukee and
the Petting Zoo. Yeah yeah, you know a little bit of you know,

(42:00):
go back to the agricultural roots inWisky that wiscons is known for.
It's just a wonderful a wonderful game. Yep. Looking forward to that and
my family's coming out that night, which I'm pretty they're gonna be pretty amazed
and pretty excited to see all theall the animals that that'll be here,
so that'll be a really good time. I love the Darren Pang's stories and

(42:21):
what you had said. And weonly got about twenty seconds here, but
there's so many and one day maybewe'll just get him for a full hour
and just do this because it's theunbelievable. Yeah, and you think about
the connections he's made from turning proin eighty four here in Milwaukee to moving
on to where he's been in hislife and even before that, it's pretty

(42:42):
amazing. We're gonna step up.That's it. Thanks for listening tonight to
Milwaukee Admirals Center ICE Admirals at homeon Wednesday,
