Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's life, relationships, politics, or current events, nothing is
off limits. This is the Patty and the Millennials podcast,
powered by ACME Markets, helping to bridge the gap between
baby boomers, gen X and millennials.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Welcome back to the podcast conversation Patty and the Millennials.
I'm Patty Jackson, not a millennial. I'm a baby boomer,
but I love the conversation with millennials. Gen X now
gen Z is just great conversation. And today we're talking sports,
which is my favorite topic. Here in Philadelphia. You got

(00:44):
one sports team, the Eagles, great super Bowl champs, but
then you look at our basketball team, the Sixers, and
it's not so great. Veteran broadcaster there, Uncle Oh is
joining me and Oh. This is the scenario. You are
given the keys to run this organization. You are in charge.

(01:11):
What would you what would you do first? What would
you change?

Speaker 3 (01:15):
I would clean house, I would fire the GM, I
would get rid of I would trade Paul George at
all costs. I mean, take what you can get for
him and trade him. I would take what I can
get for Joel and be and get him out of
here with those bad knees. I mean, what's the point,
the point of having someone who which you can't play
all the time.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
It's one thing to be.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Hurt and you're out ten games, maybe two weeks, three
weeks in your back playing to only be able to
play every other game, where you can only play in
one game this day and he can't play for five days.
Get him out of here, trade him, get him out
of here, dal Mory, get him out of here. His
his decision making is some of the worst I've ever
seen in terms of trades, Like, why are we picking

(01:59):
up all these old people? Were picking up Paul George,
No disrespect to I forget his name, but we got
it on the team anyway, No disrespect to all the
old heads we got on the team. But at the
end of the day, it's not getting us anywhere, and
it's holding us back.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
You know what amazes me about what we're looking at.
Bad decisions have been made for years, the decision to
get rid of Jimmy Butler but keep Ben Simmons. I'm
thinking about the money that has been wasted.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
It's the same things. It's what the New York Giants
did with Saquan right, Yeah, they got they got rid
of Saquon and kept the quarterback Daniel Jones.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, they kept Daniel Jones.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
So the Eagles, I mean the Sixers got rid of
Jimmy Butler and then kept Ben Simmons and then got
rid of Ben Simmons. Like, come on, it's not making
any sense. Why are we making these terrible decisions. We
need competent people in that front office making decisions. Maybe
they need to go get Hollwie Roseman to go over
there and help the Sixers.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Get their act together.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
But yeah, I would never do the anasence that they're
doing and get rid of this team. Keep Tyre MAXI
keep Jared McCain, get somebody to line up with them,
and then put and keep. Get some centers in it
that I can ball and block some shots.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
We've got I love to call it the ultimate Millennial.
We've got days are four evans? I do because you
just like got it going on. Our egos are great, right,
championship team, but we look to our Sixers it's like
what now? But it's been a problem for years, bad decisions,

(03:45):
bad money making. How can this team be saved? This
is the scenario, Daja. You have been given the keys
to fixing this team. Oh, what would you What would
you do first? How do you turn the ship around?

Speaker 4 (04:06):
I wonder if it's because of the I mean cre
at least the players, but because we're getting younger people.
I feel like the younger people are to advantage that.
I also feel like they need to be trained by
the bets in the game, and I feel like we
need to. We would need to take a big risk
and a lot of money. Where the good players are

(04:26):
I mean, like the Lebron's and stuff, Curry's the oh god,
there's so many other great players, but like bringing them
on to the team or let's I mean, how about
this if we kept the team the same and we said,
hold on NBA for a second, can we do a
training session with the best players in the NBA? Can
we do that?

Speaker 2 (04:49):
That's true? But what do you do when you have
selfish older players who don't want to help. They don't
feel it's their responsibility. I think, and not with all athletes.
Sometimes when they get the money, well there goes their motivation.
They got their money. Let me just go in ahead

(05:09):
and do this because I got this money. Some horrific
financial decisions have been made with the Sixers. Money is
spent on players that aren't worth it, not worth.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
It and I'm not gonna lie. It seems like for
the season, Joel Undee was like, I'm done. I'm not
really trying to do this no more like I thought
like he was trying to sabotage himself and not doing
like playing.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
You're right, and that's what a lot of people are feeling,
and that's why he does not get the love from
a city Philly that is so passionate about their sports
and their players, and everyone feels that he has given up.
I know, he's got to get this surgery. They say
they could keep him out for a year. They really

(05:59):
need to review this situation here.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Do you feel like a lot of the it's a
lot of the younger people who are more like you
know how a lot of people, a lot of younger
people are more so towards the popcorn success where it's
something quick and easy so once they get the money.
Do you think that's a lot of the younger people
that they're putting on a team.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Not so much with the younger people, but they're seeing
this mentality against some of the older players who are
basically still young. If you're in your thirties and stuff.
You're still young. But it's like I got this money,
I got to work as hard. I definitely, I definitely
see that author Kim Reed is here. Optimis always wins.

(06:42):
This is the scenario, Kim. You've been given the keys
to run the seventy six ers. The team has been
in dire streets forever, and it seems to get it
seems to be getting progressively, war earth, injured players, way

(07:03):
too much money spend. I can't believe they've even talking
about moving when it's like, you guys ain't got it together?
What would you do? What would you do to turn
this team around?

Speaker 5 (07:20):
So I would go back to the basics quickly. And
I'm not suggesting that you do these you do these things, you.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
Know blow, but y'all got to do something. I think
you need to go back to the basics.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
You got to look at management. You got to look
at the team. You got to look at spending. You've
got to look at what's important. You got to look
at you just got you have to kind of just read.
You have to revitalize the entire organization. I remember the
days of Pac Croachey, you know, I mean that was
that was the error. I mean, I had season tickets
back then, and I'm not even a seventy six Ers,

(07:57):
big seventy six Ers fan. I just live in Philadelphia,
live in the area, right, And I know I shouldn't
say that because you guys are mean Philadelphia fans if
somebody isn't like a certain team, but those days, that
was when seventy six ers was electric. So if they
need to bring Pat back as a consultant or whatever

(08:19):
to help them get that team back to nineties energy,
early two thousands energy, that's what they need to do.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Patty, Derek, you've been given the keys to the Sixers.
The team is not doing well, and they have not
been doing well for several years. What would you do
if you were put in charge of this team to
turn it around from years bad management and bad decisions.

Speaker 7 (08:53):
Well, the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna
go get Ben Simmons and ask them to pay all
that money he stole from Philadelphia. That's the first thing,
because he done stole millions of dollars out of here.
Then we're gonna sit down with MBEB and say, Okay,
are you gonna get the surgery You're gonna not have
the surgery because half the time you've been sitting on

(09:14):
the bench. You were supposed to play, like thirteen hundred games.
You only played, you know, six hundred and eighty of them.
That's a little more than half. You owe us money.
We got to get rid of all these people, start
the team over, keep Maxie, and start the whole team over,
from top to bottom.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
We've got Dexter, and we always love to hear it.
He has to say, Dexter, this is your scenario. The
Sixers are not doing well. It didn't just start this year.
The problems with the Sixers and management and horrible spending
has been going on for years now. It's at a

(09:54):
breaking point as to what do you do with this team.
You are given the keys to turning the seventy six
Ers around. You know, there's something like a championship team
that makes the other team's film crazy and scrutiny. What
would you do to turn the team around?

Speaker 6 (10:20):
Well, first things first, I would print out what Paul
George said the other day when he said we're not
a championship contendent team. We're not even a playoff contendent team.
I would print it out and I would put that
on the hood of everybody's car in the organization. I
would make sure they eat, sleep and breathe that like
you guys need to know that, like this is what
your teammate is saying about YOURLF. Then I would drop

(10:42):
them off in North Philadelphia with these boys who played
basketball like their life is dependent on it, and I
would say, y'all need to beat them, otherwise you cannot
come back in the gymmember. Remember in the movie I
forgot the name of it, Coach Carter with Neil Jackson,
he locked the gym up until they got their grades up.
I'm gonna lock these I'm gonna lock the gym up
until y'all start to hit three pointers, until y'all start

(11:03):
to get free throws, until y'all get these rebounds and
these assists together, I'm locking the gym. Y'all can't go
to the club, y'all can't go to dinner. Y'all got
to eat, sleep and breeze football, I mean basketball. And
then finally I would do the gilly. I would do
a gilly. I would get a media personality to get
out there and start to blow the whistle for the

(11:23):
Sixers because one thing Philadelphia likes is a winner. But
y'all also like a bandwagon. Y'all big on band wagons
in Philadelphia. And I think that if someone starts to
celebrate the Sixers and give them that attention, then they
need I do think they would start playing better. But
I feel like y'all be like y'all losing. We ain't
fit the foot with y'all. We gotta get behind this team.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Dex, what do you feel about? Okay, everyone's they want
that big fat contract, they want that money, but you
have some players they get real complacent once they get
that money.

Speaker 8 (12:00):
I think so too.

Speaker 6 (12:01):
I think that it's one of those things. And I
will give this to Jayalen Hurts where it's like you
see these contracts that he has, You see this contract
that he has, and then you see the passion that
he's working for. And I know this is a basketball conversation,
but if we're comparing it to like a football thing,
we have the Jalen Hurts and then we have the

(12:21):
guy from Dallas who has that contract and I'm not
going to say his name, but then it was like,
look at the comparison between the two of them. You
are the highest paid quarterback in the league and you're
on vacation. What are we doing here? Like, I need
you to have some passion, Like, yes, get your money,
but get the passion back as well.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
The Sixers are not doing well. We know this for
a fact. They have not been doing well for years.

Speaker 6 (12:50):
And you know why.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
You know why they're not doing well. Horrific management decisions,
horrific spending giving money to people they clearly do not
deserve it. DESI, nil is joining us, DESI, this is
the scenario. Hey, hey, hey, you've been handed the keys.

(13:14):
The key is to turn this team around. What would
you do? First?

Speaker 9 (13:22):
Well, first of all, Auntie, full transparency. I am not
Sixer's girl. I'm not basketball girl. I'm none of that girl.
And I've been so engulfed with these Eagles I have
no idea what's going on. However, I do know that
when proper checks and balances are put in place, then
people can't get away.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
With certain things.

Speaker 9 (13:40):
So that lets me know that there's not the proper
checks and balances so that the people making these decisions
can have a better outcome. So, just like what's going
on in our world right now, somebody needs to be checking.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Somebody Philadelphia is a deep sports town. Eagles coming on
a championship game, well, it puts a lot of spotlight
on the other teams, your Flyers, your Phillies, and the Sixers,
the seventy six Ers, who I could not believe wanted
a new stadium, and they're in shambles. They have not

(14:14):
been doing well for years nor making great business decisions.
Millions have been spent on players that have not panned out.
We are nowhere near a championship. Chocolate Divinity LaToya Charleston
is joining us. Here's the scenario. You've been given the

(14:38):
keys to turning this team around. What would you do
to put the Sixers on the right track because it's
been years of mismanagement.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
Year Oh well, I'm thinking on a managerial sence. First,
you have to really target the real issue of the problem,
because this has been a year's things. It's beyond just
one player, it's beyond one coach. I mean, the only
one consistent thing we do have is what the ownership.
So there has to be some type of breakdown of

(15:15):
communication between the players on the team and you know,
the managerial side. And then also on top of it,
some of these astronomical salaries that are being spent on
these players that you don't even know if they're really
worth their weight and salt. Yet some of that has
to change. Like before you can bring something to the

(15:37):
table and put all your money, you know, put all
of your investment on this one, you know, this one
thing or a couple of things, and then it's not
giving you what you want. How long are you going
to continue to keep pouring money and resources into that
investment before you go ahead and you know, save some
face and close the book and on to the next chapter.

(15:58):
So from what I know on anything, you cannot continue
to do the same exact things and expect different results.
And at a time like this in Philadelphia sports, you know,
Philly don't play when it comes to sports teams, the Sixers,
you ain't looking good. And I'm for one empire of it.
I missed the days of you know, when AI was

(16:19):
here and you know, the city was city.

Speaker 6 (16:22):
It is a movement that was for me the last time.

Speaker 8 (16:25):
I remember where you know, the Sixers really were those
glory days. And I feel like we can get back
to it, but it has to be some real sit down,
honest conversations in that front office and for a lot
of people to get out of your egos.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Yeah, Patty and the millennial of the podcast. Thank you
