Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's life, relationships, politics, or current events, nothing is
off limits. This is the Patty and the Millennials podcast,
powered by Independence Blue Cross, helping to bridge the gap
between baby boomers, gen X and millennials.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Time.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
It's Patty and Millennials. If you have look for a
great conversation, this is the podcast that you want to
check out. Thanks for joining us. I'm Patty Jackson Radio
event in Philadelphia and I've surrounded myself with men, women, millennials,
gen X, gen Y. We are in the building and
we've got something to say today. The social media fuel
(00:40):
over spending. Times are tough. You go to the market,
you're going to have a sticker shot. We've got author
kimber Lee read here. Your thoughts on the social media
play a part in people over spending? Is it the
catchup thing?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
You know?
Speaker 5 (01:06):
It's funny. I was thinking as you were talking, Daddy,
and you got to add in your intro the voice
because your voice. I get caught up in it sometimes
while I'm thinking.
Speaker 6 (01:16):
About my answer.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
Lord, you know, joy is not a price tag, and
I think we got to people have to understand that,
right because we can get caught up in all the
hypes those commercials have started to and you know, I
think from a financial wellness lens, right, I think you know,
(01:38):
the slight culture to add a car the ad to
cart moment, right, because everybody's Amazon cart is like up
to two point six million dollars, right, because I know
mine is right, And it's sometimes it's emotional spending, you know,
powered by these algorithms, because you know, my Facebook ads
are bananas that come up, pocket books, you know, all
(02:01):
these designer things that I'm not even thinking about right now, right,
And so the question isn't can I buy it? It's
not I can, and I'm blessed to be able to
say that, but it's really the question does it serve me?
So this holiday season, I've kind of decided that I'm
gifting kind of with purpose and things that are going
(02:24):
to inspire people and give them some hope or kind
of meet them my friends and family where they stand,
and not put pressure on anybody to do anything. I
think it's the love and the joy that does not
have a price tag, and I don't think people should
(02:45):
put that pressure on their family and friends. This year,
the nation is spinning very different, and we do not
know what July I mean, excuse me, what January is going.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
To hold the social media fuel over spending? Does it
play a part? Does it make you want to spend
more because you see things on social media? Does he
Neil is joining us? How do you feel about it?
Are you influenced by it?
Speaker 6 (03:12):
You know what?
Speaker 7 (03:13):
Listen at a single mom of two with one in
college and a new GGM. So I actually have a
little bit more discipline because of the way my family
structure is set up. But I will say the psychology
behind the bullying that's associated with the marketing I feel
is really strategic and unfair because depending on what you
(03:34):
click on, you know they understand and know you know
what stuff is going to entice you by what we
click on it.
Speaker 6 (03:39):
So I feel like that's a little bit predatory.
Speaker 7 (03:41):
But for me personally, I don't usually fall for the trap. Now,
the things that get me is a nice little boot,
you know what I mean, A nice little bag or something.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
But as far as pressure to.
Speaker 7 (03:52):
Do, I feel like the way my family structure is
set up and the responsibility, the level of responsibility I
have keeps me balanced and level.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
But it's really sad.
Speaker 7 (04:01):
I think about the teenagers and I think about the
young people who feel that pressure all the time and
the fact that they are strategically targeted, and it makes
it really unfair.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
It's time to hear from Reed screen. This is the
podcast Patty and the millennials and the holidays are here.
This social media influence your shopping. Could it make you overspend?
Speaker 8 (04:25):
Yes, it absolutely can because you see things trend on TikTok,
see them trend on Instagram, and when things trend, that
makes the price tag go crazily up. And there's also
another thing is if I see this actress or this
athlete wearing this specific type of shoes, I'm gonna want
those shoes. Now here's the thing. We don't have those
people money, but in our hands we're like, nah, I
(04:46):
gotta get those if they rocking them, if they're wearing
that type of clothing. But yes, it does influence over spending. Also,
these experiences, you know, you have all these places throughout
the cities where are these type of game nights or
these type of esthetic type places for Instagram, But there
are really nothing And when you go in there, you're like, oh,
I didn't have to pay two hundred dollars to do this.
(05:07):
I could do this at home. But because it's a
trend and you see people do it, you want to
pay for that experience.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Well, let me tell you something about me. I used
to be fascinated with Oprah's favorite things, but then I
realized I couldn't afford Oprah's favorite things, So that kind
of like did it for me. Comedian magician Derek Kle
is here, and holidays are here and overspending, the social
(05:34):
media fuel overspending, just having that influence your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
People are aligning sometime on social media. Social media sometimes
a lot of people that want to get clicks. The
economy is bad.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
So now all of these women that go out there
and say they need Goff's stay gobanah, what is it
called patty?
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I know you know, yes, I only get don't say
he take me out to eat? Hegos state forty eight child.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
The way the economy is and that girl the ain't
get no stamp benefits, she gonna be happy to go
to Chipotle. But jokes aside, the economy is very bad.
Social media is lying to you just to get clicked.
And this is what I want to tell tell them
to talk about people stop getting advice on people with
(06:26):
a podcast who haven't.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Done what they're telling you about.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
I don't want people without children giving me advice on
my children. I don't never been married to try to
tell me have a healthy marriage.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
This generation is so stupid.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
You watch a podcast of people who sit around to
talk about a good husband or a good wife.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Nobody been married, but they give it out advice.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Okay, you're just a little bit angry.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Love holidays are here. The social media fuel over spending?
Uncle oh, bedterm broadcaster. That is my question for you?
Does it.
Speaker 9 (07:13):
That's the fuel overspending? I think people trying to keep up,
you know, the old narrative, people trying to keep up
with the Joneses. If you're trying to keep up with
the Joneses, then you are spending in places you don't
have it.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
You know, we're in a.
Speaker 9 (07:26):
Terrible economy right now and people are losing their jobs
to AI.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
So I think you better start telling your kids the truth.
Speaker 9 (07:35):
You are Santa Claus and it's only gonna You're only
gonna spend on two gifts.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Do you think it's hard for people to do that?
And I mean it's not funny, It's not funny.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
At all.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
But it's gonna be very hard even when supermarket shopping.
Oh it's hard.
Speaker 9 (07:54):
Now I go get three things, I've spent one hundred
and fifty dollars.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 9 (08:00):
I'm not in a race to keep up with anyone,
and I'm honest with my children. Listen, here's what you
can get and that's it.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
It's tough now.
Speaker 9 (08:10):
I'm saying the clause, it's tough now, and I can't
spend the money I used to spend. You just gotta
get with the program and understand you can't keep trying
to keep up or the kids aren't being able to
get everything this year.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
The holidays are here, holiday shopping is here. The social
media impact the way that you spend, Does it make
you spend more overspend? We got deckster your thoughts, Oh
my gosh, and you a new dad too? O? Wait?
The social media influence your overspend day?
Speaker 6 (08:51):
I think in the past it has like there are
certain things, especially Christmas Day, like you see those pictures
and you see it lined up gifts everywhere, and it's
like you always want to repeat that and do that
over and over and over. And I do think that
that there's pressure to get the best gifts and get
the most gifts and do all that. And I do
think that social media plays a major part in that.
(09:11):
I will say though, as a new parent, you should
get some people around you, like Patty Jackson, because you
said to me, like, do not do a birthday party
the first year, and do not take the kid to
Disney And those are two things.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
That I just did not do well. The reason why
I say no Disney World. Let them be old enough
to really enjoy what's going on.
Speaker 6 (09:30):
Oh, I get it there now, I get it.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah, it's expensive, you know, to take that trip. Them
kids be having mouth downs if they're over stimulated. They do.
I've been there, my son pass out.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
To go to sleep.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Yes, when they miss their nap. I try to warn everybody.
Let it be when they can fully enjoy and appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I'm shocked.
Speaker 6 (09:54):
I'm like the parent that I'm like, we have Disney
World at home.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yeah, but there is that pressure. Oh I gotta do this,
Oh I gotta do that. Dexter. I realized years ago
that I could not afford Oprah's favorite things. I like
to look at them. I like to I don't know,
fantasize but I knew deep down her favorite things. I
(10:20):
couldn't afford that not go not reasonable crazy exactly, it's crazy.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
And another thing that people have to stop doing it
you have to stop doing stuff for social media in general.
We have to stop doing that.
Speaker 10 (10:33):
But also, you love your family, you love your friends,
but your friends with your family, like you've seen it,
they're struggling too, so they're not even expecting you to
do all these over the top things. So like, really
take it a step back and you think about this,
like are you doing this for them or for your
ego and your social media platform?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Wow, great conversation. Be careful of overspending for the holidays
this year is very different the sticker shop when you
go grocery shopping, and of course you have to ask yourself,
are you doing this for social media cloud or are
you gonna do something wise so you can survive after
(11:12):
the holiday season. This is the podcast conversation Patty and
the Millennials. Thanks for joining us.
