(00:00):
Good morning, Welcome to Insight,a show about empowering our community. I'm
Lorraine Ballad. Moral public schools shouldbe supportive, affirming, and well resourced
places where black girls are championed intheir academic and personal growth and have every
opportunity to learn and thrive. This, however, is not the current reality
for black girls. Inequities are inevery aspect of black girls education in Pennsylvania,
(00:24):
where they go to school, whatresources their schools have, what the
environment is like in their schools, and what opportunities they can access. Due
to the intersection of systemic anti blackracism, sexism, and other forces of
oppression, black girls are subjected toespecially daunting educational barriers. Education Law Center
(00:45):
has developed a report on the stateof Black girls and how we can be
the source of empowerment. Will bespeaking to a Maya who is a high
school senior, and Page Jokey, staff attorney at Education Law Center and lead
for the LC's Black Girls Education JusticeInitiative. We'll also be talking about the
SMS Poetry Summit, a three dayimmersive experience that will cultivate conscious art and
(01:11):
bridge gaps amongst writers with a similarappetite for growth. I'll be speaking with
two of the organizers. But first, we love our animal companions, sometimes
making sure that they're healthy and hardycan be expensive. But there is an
organization, a Mansi Pet nonprofit. They're on a mission to provide access to
affordable veterinary care for everyone. Totell us more about what they provide.
(01:37):
Joining us right now is Kate Kazinski. She is senior director of Marketing and
Brand for Amansi Pet. Thank youso much for joining us today. Thanks
so much for having me. Well, let's talk about this for so many
people. We love our animal companions, but sometimes making sure that they're healthy,
doing the preventative care, getting alsocare for them when they're not feeling
(01:57):
so well can be expensive. Tellus how Emansa Pet works. Oh,
absolutely so. Amansa Pet is thelargest nonprofit in the US that's providing affordable
and accessible veterinary healthcare. And wehave been around since nineteen ninety nine and
we're in the process of building anetwork of local veterinary clinics that are right
(02:19):
within neighborhoods. And they're all designed, as you said, to reduce that
barrier to cost, which oftentimes preventspet families from accessing veterinary care for their
beloved dogs and cats. What kindof pet care do you provide? Absolutely,
so we provide preventative services, thingslike vaccines and shots, office visits,
(02:42):
checkups, that sort of sort ofthing, as well as span neuter
surgeries and our clinics they provide differentservices depending on the neighborhood. So some
of our clinics, we have threedifferent regional locations. We're in Central Texas,
in Houston, and in Philadelphia, and our clinics provide services that meet
the needs of the neighborhood. Sowe have some new services that have just
(03:06):
rolled out in Philadelphia, which we'reexcited about. But we have certain services
such as in Texas we provide heartwormtreatments since that is such a thing down
in the southern part of the USthat folks have to deal with. So
lots of different types of services againfor dogs and cats, heartworm testing.
A full list of all of ourservices can be found on our website.
(03:29):
Right, And I guess so whatyou do is you also tailor the services
to reflect the needs of that particularcommunity. Now you have locations in Philadelphia,
tell us more about that. Yeah, absolutely, so we have two
locations in Philadelphia. The first ison Adams Avenue. That location was our
first location in Philadelphia, and thenlast year we opened up a location on
(03:53):
Roosevelt Boulevard and that's right within aPet Smart retail store, and so that
location is newer to us and isproviding the same services. All of our
locations, it should say, doprovide what we call our healthy pet services,
so things like vaccines, heartworm testingas well as feline leukemia testing and
(04:14):
spay and neuter surgeries, and thensome of the clinics that as you said,
the services are tailored. Yeah, let's talk about something new. You're
adding new special surgery services at yourAdams Avenue location. What exactly is that?
Absolutely? So the new surgery serviceslocated there are what we call soft
tissue surgery. So these are goingto be things like mass removals, laceration
(04:38):
repairs, things that do cost alittle bit more at a regular veterinary clinic
provider, and these are services thatwe're happy to be able to provide at
a much lower cost. And inorder to be seen for a special surgery
like this, we will have folkscome in for a consultation. Our veterinary
staff will take a look at whateverthe issue might be going on and determine
(05:01):
if it's something that our staff cantake care of right there at the clinic,
and then they'll be scheduled for thesurgery. Tell us in general,
what the procedure is if you havean animal companion, a pet, a
cat or a dog, and youwant to either get preventative care or more,
what exactly are the steps you needto take. Absolutely, that's such
(05:24):
a great question. So one ofthe great things about a Mansa pet is
that any of those preventative care treatmentsas I talked about, or needs that
a pet family might have, arecompletely walk in. So you can come
into a clinic when we're open, and you can check our website for the
dates and times that our clinics areopen and be seen in most cases that
(05:46):
day. And we do get alittle bit busier on weekends and during the
warmer months, so keep that inmind. But that is something we're really
happy to be able to provide,is that walk in service for things like
stay a neuter surgeries and these newsoft tissues juries, those do require scheduling,
so you'll have to call our phonenumber and we'll be happy to schedule
that for folks, And depending onwhere you're located and what you're looking for
(06:11):
and what type of pet you have, weights and things like that, the
time might be a little bit differentfor those. But for the most part,
in Philadelphia, we can probably getyou in if you're listening to this
relatively soon. Our wait list isnot as long in Philadelphia. Okay,
well that's good news. Now tellus. Is there anything else you want
to add that you think that ourlisteners might want to know about a mansi
(06:33):
pet before we close? Oh?Absolutely, So we did just launch another
news service at our Roosevelt clinic. We are now offering what we call skin
and ear services, and so theseare diagnosing and treating ear and skin conditions
such as bacterial or ear infections, fungal and skin infections, and those we
(06:56):
can have folks come on in andas part of that healthy pet services on
a walk in basis and we'll beable to treat those as well. And
then yeah, to wrap up,I would just encourage folks to check out
our website amansapat dot org for alist of all of our services. But
a big thing to mention is thatwe could not provide the low cost services
(07:16):
that we have and the accessibility thatwe're working to provide without supportive donors.
So a lot of our work isfunded through the contributions of donors, and
we're so thankful for that. Soif you're listening to this and are interested
in getting involved to support a mansaPAT, you can learn how at our
website, which is just a mansapatdot org. That is fantastic. Amansa
(07:39):

those between people depends that they loveda low cost preventive and also other types
of surgeries and treatments making veterinary careaccessible to all of us. We appreciate
the fact that you are there forus, and we thank you so much
