Speaker 1 (00:01):
You know, there are a lot of things that are
vital when it comes to a live radio broadcast. One
of those is making sure you have sound turned up.
I'm thinking we have some problem here, and sure enough
it's because there was no sound. But the sound is
now up and we are now with you. It is
five oh six on a Monday morning here at news
Radio eight forty whas Nick Coffee. That's me Scott Fitzgerald
alongside today also John Shann and it'll be the trio

(00:23):
of us this morning. Mister Alden is out, but we've
got you for the next four hours as we get
you set for another week here and a big week.
It's going to be a lot to unpack from the weekend,
and we'll do exactly that. We now know the exact
number of victims in this plane crash last week, will
certainly give you the latest on that. I also think
certainly worth mentioning that the the type of plane that,

(00:47):
of course was the one that was being used last Tuesday,
UPS has now decided that all of those all of
those specific planes are are no longer going to be
used for the time being. So the the MD eleven's
UPS decided to basically ground all of those for inspections,
So that is something that could be looked at as well,

(01:11):
makes sense protocol kind of thing. But also maybe this
is a sign that this type of plane won't be
used anymore. I mean, none of us know at this point,
but that of course was brought up last week quite
a bit just as something that we could see happen.
So we shall see it again. We'll give you the
latest update from Mayor Greenberg over the weekend. And also

(01:31):
the government shutdown could be coming to an end.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
It sounds as.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
If there's real progress there for the first time since
the shutdown started over a month ago, so we will
give you the latest on that. Also, the cold weather
has arrived. In fact, the freezing temperatures have arrived. It
is thirty degrees here currently at five oh eight, and
we've got some potential snow on the way. So that
is something we'll certainly be tracking a little early for it,

(01:55):
I'm sure is what a lot of folks are thinking.
But you know, I'm somebody that enjoys now. I enjoy
it until it becomes a real pain in the rear end,
which it can oftentimes do that right with closures, bad roadways,
which of course leads to traffic that kind of stuff.
But it definitely felt this morning on my way in
as I see flurries coming down right around Hospital Curve. Here,

(02:17):
winter has arrived. If it was, If you didn't feel
it already, I'm sure you feel it. You feel it
right now. Also, we are now a day away, which
it still doesn't seem real, but it is real. We're
a day away from Louisville and Kentucky playing each other
in basketball, yes, before they play in football, and we
do have an opening line for that one. As far
as the point spread, we'll get to that coming up

(02:37):
here shortly. But I've said it since we knew that
this game was going to be played on November the eleventh,
that it just felt weird, doesn't seem normal at all.
Don't like it. But here we are a day away
and we're not changing it.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
So I have. I've kind of shifted.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
To to game mode, to a rivalry week, which I'm
sure a lot of others have as well, as this
is expected to be a competitive game, but with it
being so early, a lot of new pieces for both teams.
Of course, I don't think anybody truly knows what to
expect which could lead to any that leaves it open
for really any type of result. But we'll certainly talk
about that today and tomorrow. And then on the football side,

(03:17):
what a blown opportunity for Jeff Brohm and his team
is they lose in overtime to Cal, a game that
absolutely changes sort of what they're playing for.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Right.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
You want to you want to win every game you can.
You want to have the best season possible. Ten and
two is still on the table, but that ten and
two now isn't going to get you what it would
in previous years. Right, you are now essentially on the
outside looking and needing, needing miracles for you to find
yourself in the ACC Championship, let alone any shot of

(03:48):
sniffing the college football Playoff, which it's never going to
be college football Playoff or bust around here. It shouldn't
be because that's just not a realistic standard. But when
you have it, it's within reach, and you make the
avoidable mistake. And it's not just a mistake. I mean
you lost a game, but it's a game you could

(04:08):
have won. You should have won. Now that's what it
could have should have. You are defined by winning and
losing they lost, California won. That's what happened, But it's
real tough for fans to know that this is at
least I guess you could make the case maybe three
seasons it's been there, but certainly the second time you've
had to just kind of not screw up and you'd
be in a really good spot and you screwed up.

(04:29):
And losing games outright doesn't necessarily mean. Look, people, you
lose games, you're not going to be perfect, but that's
a game that you should have won, and there's really
no justification that, like, you know, what are you gonna do?
It's Cal. I mean, Cal's a fine team. They played well,
but if Louisville was anything close to the team a
lot of people thought they were. If they're anything close

(04:49):
to the number that was next to their name when
the college Football playoff rankings came out last week, you
don't mess around and lose that game, and they did
and it was costly, no doubt. Now on the other end,
with Kentucky, where the hell did that come from? They
beat the breaks off of a bad Florida team that
of course has fired their coach. Their season's been a wash,
but they've been competitive in the SEC. Kentucky has not

(05:12):
really been competitive in the SEC at times this year
for a good chunk of the season. And that was
about as bad of a butt whooping as you'll see
an SEC play in a year where you haven't seen
big time blowouts a Kentucky team that their season has
been on life support maybe since the start of it,
they looked the part. And now, if you're Mark Stoops,

(05:34):
you got to feel better about your chances of sticking around.
If you're a Kentucky fan, I mean, you can't change it, right,
It's going to play out the way Mitch Barnhardt decides.
But or do you have mixed emotions right? Because beating
a Florida team that again has very little to play
for and kind of laid down, is that? Is that
worth deciding to keep this going? Because we're not far

(05:59):
removed from Kentucky fans wondering, Okay, if we win a couple,
that's going to be the result you want because it's
your team.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
You want to win every game you can.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
But if that means that you have to stick with
your head coach, is it worth it? And only Kentucky
fans can answer that, And I'm sure, everybody has different opinions,
but that is the type of game for them that
looks at the rest of their schedule. I'm sure Tennessee Tech,
Van Dy and Louisville and is there any other game
or is that it for them? Clearly all winnable games,
And yes, Kentucky Louisville, that's a winnable game for Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
I mean, Louisville all year.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Has flirted with the type of loss that they suffered
on Saturday night. Could have easily lost to Boston College,
I mean, could have easily lost to Virginia Tech, and
they didn't. So you give them credit for winning. And
it's nice to be able to turn it on in
the second half and come away with a wins. Same
thing actually against Pittsburgh. But you can't bank on that

(06:54):
all year. And it's nice to have that resilience. It's
nice to get those reps, if you will, when it
comes to knowing, hey, we got our backs against the wall,
we got to climb out of a hole. It's nice
to be able to show that you can do that.
But you also have to keep in mind there's a
reason you keep having to do that because you're not
clean you're not playing clean football, So a lot to
react to from the weekend.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
We'll do exactly that.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
We'll let you hear what may Greenberg had to stay
with the weekend as we now know that all the
missing victims in this terrible plane crash they've been accounted for,
which is at least some level of a step here
in the process for closures. So again, we will keep
you updated throughout the morning, and I hope you stick
with us. It is coffee and Company. We are fueled

(07:35):
by Thornton's right here, there's Radio eight forty whas so.
Maya Greenberg confirmed on Saturday night that all individuals listed
as missing after the UPS cargo plane crash last week
have been accounted for. This was the update that he
provided on Saturday night on his Facebook page, So if
you've not heard it, here's the latest from Mayor Craig Greenberg.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Total number of victims that our search and rescue teams
have located the site of the tragic UPS crash is thirteen.
That matches the total number of missing victims reports that
have been submitted to LMPD combined with the individual who
passed at UFL hospital. That brings the number of victims

(08:17):
as a result of the crash to fourteen. We pray
that there are no more victims. All the bodies are
in the possession of the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, and
she will make that information available as soon as she
identifies the names of each of the victims. May their
memories be a blessing.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
So again that's Mary Greenberg.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Thirteen recovered, but the total is fourteen because of one
of the victims. They were taken to the hospital where
they later passed away due to the injuries. So am
I wrong, Scott and feeling as if this is at
least some step towards this closure, which again it's a process.
It's not as if this is the closure, but this
is a step towards it. Just knowing that everybody he's

(09:00):
been accounted for.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, I think you are.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
And it was great to hear the mayor say that,
and I mean great in the fact that to what
you just mentioned, because if there's one thing that families
want in situations like this, no matter what the case is,
just they want answers, that's all it is.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
And I think the mayor has.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Been very good at bringing those answers to us. As
has the NTSPN. To be honest with you, I think
the NTSB has given us information at a faster pace
than I thought they would.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Same here, expectations were low for me just because I
thought it would be a very much telling us things
that basically telling us the same. And I'm not being critical.
I understand why the process is what it is, but
I was expecting updates that were kind of the same
but maybe just different language, if you will. But I
think each time they've they've given us anything, there's at

(09:45):
least been something to where an idiot like myself who
doesn't follow anything when it comes to aviation, I kind
of I know where they're going.

Speaker 5 (09:53):
Right, you know.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
And to be honest with you, Nick, looking back on
this whole thing, the way it unfolded, I mean, I'm
amazed that we lost only that number of lives.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Absolutely, and it continues to be something that looks like
a tragic situation because it is. But overall, I can't
be the only one that continues to think this little
thing here, this little thing there, this could have been
so much worse.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
Yeah, And I mean the fact now that they've grounded
the MD eleven, which we saw coming that was the
number one thing A lot of people were asking after
the dust kind of settled from the initial shock, why
are these planes still in the air. And I think
it just took a little bit for him, both FedEx
and UPS to say, hey, look, let's put these things down.
And then the question is will they ever fly again?
Because then, as you mentioned last week, they're aging this

(10:37):
aircraft out and they're planning on retiring them. Anyway, Long
story short, we're gonna learn more of what's come out
of this, and more questions will be answered. But big
tip of the hat to the Mayor's office, Big tip
of the hat to the NTSB. They've really done the
yeomen's work here and getting us the information we needed.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
And although they're not out here working for my approval
by any means, everybody involved as far as just leadership
when it comes to this city, when it comes to
the NTSB, I mean, it seems as if everyone's working
together in an awful situation that is in fact a tragedy.
It seems as if everybody's handling this as best you
can and still something we're going to remember for a

(11:14):
long time. But I believe now that we know the
number the total number of victims is at fourteen and
everybody has been accounted for. That means we're also starting
to learn more about who these individuals are. And again
that's at least some level of heading towards what's going
to be closure.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
But also just some quick quick updates from the weekend.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
The NTSB did reveal that the black box that has
the recorded audio that there was a repeating bell sound
for the final twenty five seconds before the impact, and
of course they'll try to determine what in fact that
that actually means. Also, just some flight records for the
plane itself. It underwent over a month of maintenance in
San Antonio from September through mid October. That was information
that was available last week, but obviously still an important

(11:56):
important thing to keep in mind, and the maintenance and
just the different issues that it has. Some of that,
of course is a concern for safety, but what I've
read is that there's been also just take away this.
I mean again not to act like it didn't happen,
but using this thirty four year old jet, even if
you weren't concerned about safety prior to this, it's not

(12:16):
real efficient when it comes to fuel, so that speaks
to why they were looking to kind of age it out.
But yeah, we'll have you updated as best we can
if there is any more to come, but not sure
exactly on a day to day basis what kind of
updates we're going to get. But again I can assure
you that when we have them, you will have them
right here at News Radio eight forty whas sports is
coming up next'll stick around right here with us. It's
coffee and company and we are fueled by Thorntons. We

(12:39):
don't need to worry about school closings or snowshovels, not
just yet. But winter is on the doorstep here in
Louisville because it's cold. It is a thirty degrees here
at five thirty six on a Monday morning. Coffee and
company with you, and we are fueled by Thortons. Keith
Thorton's in mind. They've got you covered when it comes
to keeping you fueled for the day ahead, whatever it
may be. But if it's breakfast, you get this day started.

(13:00):
They've got a lot of good options. I say a
lot of good options.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Because they do.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
They've got different types of breakfast sandwiches, breakfast tacos, donuts.
But the donuts, there's a lot of good options just
within their selection of donuts. So again you can get
a cup of coffee and a donut and that's just
three bucks, So that may be just the kind of
breakfast you need to get the day started. But again
keep them in mind throughout. They've got good options when

(13:25):
it comes to lunch as well. So we are proudly
fueled by Thornton's all right. So when it comes to
this winter weather that has arrived, scattered snow showers and
flurries could give you a dusting this morning, I would say,
but not anything that should slow you down as far
as slick roadways or anything like that. But there could
be some more widespread snow showers that develop a little

(13:46):
bit later on in the afternoon. But as far as accumulation,
it looks as if an inch or less, but I
don't know. Again, I'll defer to those that are professionals
when it comes to the weather, the meteorologists, but I'd
be shocked if we get anything noticeable, but could be
wrong because heavier bursts could end up coming a little

(14:08):
bit later on. Then that of course could create some
slick spots and if it is a real heavy burst.
We're talking some potential visibility issues out there, so we
shouldn't take it lightly. But yeah, this was the morning.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
If you've if you've.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Got out of bed and headed out of the house,
this this has to be the coldest day we've had
so far, as far as just the fall and winter weather,
because the winter is actually not here technically. But yeah,
we were below freezing, so bundle up. I know I've
got a couple of layers on today and I had
the heat on, not full blast in the car, but
I made sure make sure I was.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I was warm on the way in.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
Now we know Scott's vehicle doesn't have AC and it
makes me very sad.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
What about heat? You got heat, my man? Plenty heat?

Speaker 4 (14:49):
Okay, I got plenty of heat. I was cozy this
morning coming into work. Fant a little too cozy, to
be honest with you. It is nice and we're up yesterday.
I got my steps in early in the morning yesterday, and
then my daughter ran out. She came over to the
house and ran out in the afternoon. Came home a
little just before dinner and said it got noticeably colder
out as the day went on, and it looks like

(15:10):
things are going to sort of regulate themselves. In fact,
I think we're going to be back up in the
seventies before too long.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
Well, Saturday was beautiful, Yeah, Saturday, very nice day. I
mean it wasn't the temperatures weren't super high, but high
enough that with that sunshine it was it was nice outside.
And yes, I can confirm yesterday as the day went on,
we were running around doing a lot yesterday, just running errands,
and each time we were out it was cooler. And
of course this morning very cold.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
So the time of a year where we're going to
get that contrasting feature of temperatures.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
And it felt good last night.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
We threw on, made some meat loaf last night for dinner,
had a whole boatload of comfort foods while we had
the ballgame on, and I mean it was one of
those cozy sundays where we.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
Just satud it's very This is the kind of weather
where it's very easy to just stay indoors, cuddle up
and eat.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
That's exactly what it is, dude, And that's right to
be careful yesterday because I was making treats. I like
to make some stuff for my the teachers there at
Saint Martha because they work so hard throughout. Look at you,
and my daughter's like, dad, can you throw these together?
Because they get it when they come in on Monday.
And man, I'm with you, bro. I was sitting there,
I was all cozy, have my favorite hoodie on, and
and I'm like, okay, I I gotta pull away from

(16:18):
the food here because I'm snacking while I'm eating and
it was just too cozy to get wrapped up in that.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
So you guys are making me feel bad. John Shannon
brings a big.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
Old batch of chili last Friday.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
You're making sweets for teachers to send in, and I
maybe I'll bring in a bunch of Thornton's donuts one
morning to do my part.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Those are kryptonite for me every time I see him,
And whenever you do your ads for Thornton's, Man, it's
like I'm trying.

Speaker 5 (16:40):
To behave during the week. I mean, you bring up.

Speaker 4 (16:42):
The fact that if I were listening to you, I
would no doubt be veering off the first Thornton's I hit, well, Hey,
that's the goal, right, I mean, there's I don't know
what it is about their donuts, man, but they hit
a different vibe.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
So I will say, so you mentioned the Thornton's, the
Thornton's reads, and I don't even call them that because again,
I i'd say that if I wasn't on the radio,
because I'm just I'm fueled by Thorntons.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
It's in my DNA.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
We all know this, right, Well, somebody sent me a picture.
I'm going to try to find it on social media.
And this is just an example of when you partner
with the great company that is very visible within this market.
Right if you are in Kentucky, Ana, there's likely a
Thornton's that is very very close to you. And I've
been with them for a long long time, certainly appreciate them,
and hopefully we can keep this thing going forever. But

(17:26):
somebody sent me a picture of something they were promoting
outside of Yeah, here it is you can get and
this is a legit thing I need to share with
our listeners.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Right now.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
You can get a thirty pack of bush Light for
twenty four ninety nine, which is technically a deal. And
somebody sent me a picture of the sign that was
outside the Thorntons and said, is this the Nick Coffee Special?
And I can tell you they they did not make
this any kind of a deal on behalf of me.
But yeah, I now know where I'm heading, and I
need to get more bush Light because that's a pretty
good deal. So yeah, good stuff. And again we are

(17:57):
proudly fueled by Thornton's. All right, let's get to a
quick time. We've got Rory O'Neil set to join us
coming up here on the other side. We will get
the latest on this government shut down potentially coming to
an end, and an update on just the impact that
we've had with the shutdown when it comes to food stamps,
flight cancelations, that kind of stuff. So I feel like

(18:18):
there's some momentum to get this thing ended, more so
now than we've had since it started. But you never
really know. But Roo joined us on the other side
from NBC News.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Stick with us. It is five point.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Forty one at news Radio eight forty whas. Coffee and
company with you here at News Radio eight forty whas,
and we are fueled by Thornton's. And we are now
joined by Rory O'Neil, and we'll just get right to it. Rory,
what can you tell us about the latest on this
government shutdown.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
Can you deliver us some good news?

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Well, there's a sliver of hope here that this may
be coming to an end soon. Last night, the Senate
passed a measure that will reopen the government at least
until the end of January. It's going to pay the
food stamp programs, hopefully of more of these disruptions at
local airports, get everything operational at least for a little while.
But look, a lot of people are saying that Democrats

(19:08):
folded here. They really didn't get much on their signature
issue when it came to standing up to this legislation,
namely the subsidies for Obamacare policies. There's no guarantee that
those subsidies are going to continue, essentially just to guarantee
that they'll vote on it in mid December, but no
guarantee that they'll vote, that they'll wrangle enough Republicans to

(19:31):
get on board. So they did finally break this impasse,
it seems, on day number forty. Now we don't have
a timeline yet as to when things could get back
to normal, but it is coming together quickly.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
Certainly seems as that this is the first sign of
some real optimism that this does in fact shut down.
You care to speculate on what maybe led to the
Democrats to signing to fold as you said.

Speaker 5 (19:51):
There, Well, it's interesting because they sort of took this
action even after you thought the Democrats would have had
the wind in their sales after those big elections victories
last week. But I think when you add it all up,
this not benefits the airport disruptions, the federal workers struggling
to make ends meet. I think it just became too
much for the Democrats to ignore. Now, look, a lot

(20:14):
of Democrats are not happy with this. The minority leader
in the House, how Kim Jeffries, He's a no, and
he leads the House Democrats. Chuck Schumer, he was a no,
and he leads the Senate Democrats. So even leadership isn't
really a fan of this package. But they got enough
moderate Democrats to come over, eight in all, to come
over to get that sixty votes needed to make this

(20:37):
thing pass.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Roy O'Neil is our guest joining us here at NewsRadio
eight forty. Whas this is a very very scary headline
that I've been tracking three astronauts stranded in space. That
sounds scary as can be. What can you tell us
on the latest with this scary situation here right now?

Speaker 5 (20:54):
This is happening aboard the Chinese space station, not the
US or International Space Station, And this is China's space station,
and three astronauts who were due to come home last
week are still on board because their return ship was
apparently damaged by some sort of space debris. You still
don't really know a whole lot about exactly what's going on.

(21:14):
It's difficult to get a lot of information, but it
is fascinating to see how this is all unfolding as
we try to figure out exactly what the damage is,
whether or not the US maybe SpaceX and Elon Musk
could help out, and China still deciding just what their
options are at this point.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Is this unheard of?

Speaker 1 (21:34):
I feel like when it comes to the coverage of
those that end up in space, this is not something
you ever hear about.

Speaker 5 (21:40):
Well, we did just have that Starliner, remember the Boeing
ship that left the American astronauts stranded up there for
months on end. You know, the International Space Station is
much more robust than China's and so the ISSS had
a lot more options, a lot more food and oxygen,
and fuel on board and water, all that stuff was
on board. That's a little bit more dicey for this

(22:02):
much smaller Jongong space station that China has, So it's
a it's a bit of a wait and see. And
again we don't really know the extent of the damage
to that to that return capsule.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Yeah, Chinese astronaustraated in space. Just the thought of going
to space scares me, and I can I can confirm
all chains. I'll never end up there, and this is
one of those reasons.

Speaker 5 (22:23):
Why right, Yeah, and I'm six, what's sick? So you're
not You're not shoehorning me into that capsule in the
first place.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Yeah, well said Rory. Has always be appreciate your time.
Enjoy the rest of your Monday, my friend, thank banks.
That is Rory O'Neal of NBC News. I always appreciate
his time. Let's get to a quick update of traffic
and weather. We'll see how the roadways are looking as
we get this Monday started so far, so good, but
as you know, that can always change. So we'll get
the latest from Bobby Ellis and also get the latest
on the forecast for Matt Melosa.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Bitch if WLK.

Speaker 1 (22:50):

I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
