Speaker 1 (00:00):
So we now know that the number of total fatalities
is at fourteen from last week's playing crash. Mary Greenberg
confirmed Saturday night that all individuals listed as missing after
the crash last week have been accounted for, so at
thirteen were recovered and one victim that did later go
(00:20):
to the hospital and did not make it that makes
it to fourteen. So I believe this gives us at
least some step towards closure in this overall process, especially
for those that needed to wait to find out that
their worst fear was confirmed. And as we talked about
(00:40):
a lot last week, I can't imagine being in that
situation at all, let alone knowing how I would be
processing things mentally, but again just knowing that yes, the
person that you could not find your love, when your friend,
whoever it may be, that they were victims here, which
again just a tragic situation all the way around. But
(01:01):
again fourteen is the total number now and that is
believed to be the final number that we're going to get,
and just a tragic situation all the way around. And
I know, in just talking to some folks over the weekend,
just friends, acquaintances, people that I don't typically talk through
talk with throughout the week. I mean, it was nice
(01:21):
to know I wasn't alone in realizing that in this
tragic situation, we're also just very fortunate that it wasn't
a lot worse, because it easily could have been. And yeah,
it's a week we'll remember for a long time and
certainly going to have some lingering impact. And the businesses
in that area, certainly, even if they were able to
(01:41):
fortunately be safe and have nobody injured, their future is
in question, there's no doubt. And they were able to
get in on Saturday for the first time since the
plane crash, some of those businesses that are in that area,
and they were only allowed forty five minutes in and
what they saw, as you could expect, was something they
(02:01):
probably hope to never see again, certainly something they never
imagined seeing. But uh, that's just another another layer here
that that you among many of course, that you just
don't you don't really think about unless you're in that situation,
and that is just walking into a business that that
maybe isn't completely destroyed, but certainly there's gonna be a
lot of work to get it back to the way
(02:23):
it was prior to this plane crash. If it's your business,
if it's something you put everything you have into, that
that can be I mean that that's that's devastating. And
yes you can find things to be appreciative of if
if all of your employees were able to to to
be unharmed, and that's that's a win in the situation overall.
But no doubt, this entire plane crash and the lingering
(02:44):
effects will be felt for for a long time. And
one of those businesses is Quantum Inc. That's onnop Road
and the owner there, to our partners at wk why
describe the aftermath as an absolute battlefield with the breed
in parts of nearby petroleum plant scattered all across the ground.
One of the employees drove straight into the smoke on
(03:05):
Tuesday night before realizing how close they actually were to
the fire. That'll be something you remember for a long time,
I'm sure. But the access was blocked for days, which
again that can leave a business in straight survival mode,
meaning if they're not I mean a lot of businesses,
if they go a couple of days with an unexpected shutdown,
the financial impact there can be devastating. Just to give
(03:27):
you an example, Quantum ink. They ship forty thou pounds
of ink daily, roughly one hundred thousand dollars worth, and
every day they're shut out, I mean, it puts the
further behind, so again lingering effects that will be felt
in a lot of different ways. But owners were given
forty five minutes roughly to retrieve whatever they could before
being escorted back out. So it's not as if they're
(03:48):
allowed to just go back in and start getting things
set up. It's going to be a while before that.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
That can happen.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
And for some of them, they're having to just relocate,
try to you know, get things up and running at
a different locations. That's straight up survival mode right there.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Again. Quantum Inc.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Their owner Adam Bland, says that they temporarily moved their
operations to other states just to keep serving the customers
and supporting employees until they can potentially get back up
and running the way they were prior to this. To
this fire, and of course it was caused by as
you know, the plane crash, but the Oklalhona Fire Department
and LNPD they've been coordinating different I guess opportunities for
(04:30):
these these individuals to get access to these businesses, and
again I'm sure a damaged workplace is the least of
the worries for those that have more devastation. But still
this is going to impact the livelihood of a lot
of people and the impact overall again, we're gonna feel
it for a long time, there's no doubt about that.
(04:50):
All right, let's get to an update of trafficking weather.
If you are just now getting up and getting your
day started, winter feels like it's arrived. We've got freezing
temperatures about thirty degree right now here at news Radio
eight forty whas And I just saw there on the
camera that sits on the bridge in downtown Louisville, there's
there's there's some dusting of snow there. So I don't
(05:12):
think you need to be worried about any crazy conditions
on the roadways. But again, snow is expected, so be
mindful of that. No school closings, school, no snow shovels needed.
But again we do have some snowflakes out there, so
be advised. All right, Again, trapping a weather updates coming
up next, and also we'll talk about what happened on
Saturday night as Louisville. They remain undefeated in regulation, but
(05:35):
they now have two losses, which changes a lot for
Jeff Bram and his team, and both those losses come
in overtime, So a big missed opportunity for the Cards,
no doubt. And also, we've got this basketball game between
Louisll and Kentucky coming up tomorrow. We'll continue to get
you set for that as best we can right here
at news Radio eight forty. Whas Bennett left, tie ball,
game ball at midfield, everything to play for, and somehow
(05:58):
Louisville found a way to lose it all, which should
have been a routine finish, became an unraveling that left
Jeff Brohm and of course the fans upset, disgusted, maybe
even and the talk about a playoff spot seems not.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Possible at this point.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
So you could still have a good season, you could
still potentially win ten games. I don't think the Louisville
football fan base should be in the mindset of playoff
or bust.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
It's more realistic.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
You certainly can get there now, you could have got
there this year, so I understand the disappointment. But if
we start defining a good season in a bad season,
specifically on can you make the twelve team college football playoff,
we've lost our minds, so that one really stung, though
it did. It's consucky. It's morning news, coffee and company
(06:49):
with you here at news Radio eight forty whas and
we are feel about Thornton's appreciate you hanging out with
us on Saturday night. Twenty nine to twenty six was
the score as an overtime I can overtime loss at
home by the way for Louisville this season, and when
you consider what was at stake, especially knowing that as
you're trying to hold on and find a way to
win against California, Virginia took a loss, which at that
(07:13):
time until the game ended, for Louisville, their chances of
seeing themselves in an ACC championship game became much more
likely until the overtime period ended. And Jeff Brom obviously
really upset with his team for good reason. And there
was a lot of there was a lot of focus
as far as the blame going on the defense because
(07:34):
they simply had no answer for the duo of and
I'm not going to attempt to say his name. I
didn't hear his name actually mentioned a whole lot on
the broadcast, to be honest with you, because what were
they calling him?
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Something? At JTS I think is.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
What they were calling him, right, but thirty of forty
seven two touchdowns he was Look, that guy's good.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
I could never say his name. You gave up.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
That guy will not be at California next year. I
would imagine there'll probably be a lot of money being
thrown at him, or maybe he stays loyal. I don't know,
but he's really good. And Dejezus the receiver that Lowell
had no answer for. I mean, you can meet sixteen
receptions one hundred and fifty eight yards. That guy was unstoppable.
So the criticism for the defense was certainly understandable, But
I think the defense has been pretty consistent. I'm not
(08:19):
deflecting as that if they played a good game.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
They didn't.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
They should have been able to account for what those
two that duo was doing. But also the offense. I mean,
Jeff Brom I think for the first time this year,
certainly maybe one of the first times since he's been here,
I felt as if he was forcing something that he
did not have at the quarterback position. Miller Moss, you
see where he can make plays. You see at times
that he's got some arm talent, but you also have
(08:43):
seen pretty consistently this guy is not as good as
the quarterbacks we've had before. He can make mistakes that'll
cost you the game. He makes mistakes that'll get you
fired from your job, and that essentially means getting benched.
And I don't know if they'll make a change if
Jeff still thinks Miller Moss is the guy that gives
this team the best chance to win and he's going
to continue to be under center. However, you do have
(09:06):
to start looking at the balance here. Okay, does he
do enough good to overcome the bad? And do you
have somebody that could be a little bit more safe
your on your depth chart that that could potentially make
the same positive plays, But avoid the ultimate goofs because again,
Miller Moss just twenty at thirty eight and just we've
(09:27):
seen it right eight games in. You know who you are,
you know what you have, and I think Isaac Brown
not being there as a factor, but the run game
still should have been utilized.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
When you see that.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
You've got Kean Brown fourteen carries one hundred and thirty
six yards, averaging nine point seven yards per carry, and
you don't lean on that more so, I just think
it was one of the many factors and why they
came up short. And really, I know a lot of
fans are probably looking at this season a lot differently
now And I get it all right, quick break traving
(09:56):
weather updates on the way right here at news Radio
eight forty whas. Thank you very much, John Shannon. Yes,
the flight delays and cancelations certainly one of the biggest
talking points when it comes to this government shutdown that
has now broke a record, but we could be getting
it into that shutdown this week. That's at least the
first sign of an ending in quite some time. But
(10:20):
the airline issues as well as food stamp issues, those
who I think the two most talked about effects of
this shutdown and getting bad to where again it was
only going to get worse unless they get this thing,
the shutdown, to completely end. But over the weekend, the
US Department of Agriculture they sent a sharp warning to
(10:42):
the states that did issue full November snap benefits without authorizations,
saying they must immediately undo those payments or risk losing
federal funding. So that decision has left millions of low
income families confused if they're going to actually get food
assistance this month or not. And what I would encourage
(11:04):
those that are involved in this in any way, meaning
those with the US Department of Agriculture, those that are.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
I guess not to.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Say that it's it's not one person specifically, but those
that have any kind of of of of of of
influence in this coming to an end. Could you at
least try to consider the everyday human being in America
and how they're impacted by this, because this is even
if in fact people are able to to to find
a way to make ends meet and they can get
food on the table for themselves and their kids. You
(11:38):
know that that's that's what you want, that's what you
hope for in a time like this, But just the
optics of this right like you're you're worried that this
could this could last many months and you don't know
what you would do if that's the situation, You have
no control over it. That that leaves you just completely
dealing with stress, anxiety, and and that's that's you know,
(12:00):
that's unfortunate to put it lightly, but imagine now not
knowing if you're going to get the assistance you thought
you were getting at the last minute last week because
of some procedural missteps. I mean, it's just to me,
it's just it's a terrible sign that at every level,
nobody seems to really care about those that are negatively
(12:20):
impacted by this. And that's not to say that there
are millions of people that right now don't have any
food and are going without, because I'm sure desperate times
have called for some desperate measures, there's no doubt about that.
But just to to have this be a story from
the weekend that when everybody was scrambling to just tried
to do whatever they could to get these the funds
that were set aside and available again, the federal judge said, hey,
(12:42):
you have to use these because that's what this is for.
This money is set aside so in fact, when these
situations do end up happening, you can take care of
those that are going without. And there was clearly some
fight against doing that, and then it did. It did
get pushed through to now have states that have been told, hey,
you've got to reverse what you did, immediately undo those payments.
(13:04):
I mean, if you're somebody that's relying on those to
just survive. You know, you're told, well, actually your state
there was some procedural missteps involved. So yeah, now you're
not going to get it, and we don't know when
you're gonna get it. I mean, I just can't imagine
being in that situation, just the helpless feeling that that
you must have as somebody that is clearly you have
(13:25):
no way of of you have no control over it.
But also it's tough to even really know where you stand. Right,
are we getting it or not? Did my state did they?
Did they not go about it the right way? They
did pay me, But does this mean that now that
money's going to be taking away from me?
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Like it's it's it's a mess. But again, I.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Guess the good news is that we we have some
light at the end of the tunnel to where it
does seem as if the government shut down could actually
come to an end at some point this week. But yeah,
just just a mess all the way around, and not
a surprise that we broke the record.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
So all right, let's get to a.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Quick time out trafficking well updates on the way stick around,
because we could have some traffic issues. We could always
have traffic issues, right, but maybe the roadways. Again, we've
got legitimate snow coming down in areas here in Kentucky,
Anda and that of course is never a good recipe
when it comes to people out driving. So we'll have
(14:19):
the latest from Bobby Ellis on the traffic. We'll also
have the latest from Matt Melosovich on the forecast we're
expecting for the day ahead, So stick with us and
what I want to get to On the other side,
YouTube TV customers, how many of you are riding it out?
Speaker 2 (14:34):
How many of you have decided.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
To say see you later, I'll quickly bail on you,
because within minutes I can go get a cheaper plan
and get access to the channels that I actually want.
I think this is a real dangerous thing for YouTube TV,
but it may also just be a dangerous thing in
general to give people a chance to see if they
truly can go without something, because that's what's happening with
(14:58):
some people that are like, hey, you know, I thought
i'd I said, but no, I'm good. We'll talk about
that in a lot more right here at News Radio
eight forty Whas TV, they're of course risking customer churn,
and it's a it's a it's one of the more
long standing disputes that we've seen in television, where YouTube
TV they claim their their firm. They're not gonna budge,
(15:21):
but Disney, of course, who owns ZSBN. They want more money,
and they have some good data to back up their
claim because they're aware that when it comes to live television,
the people that that that that believe.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
They need it.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
The activity of those who have it show that they
watch live sports way more than they watch anything else live.
So right now the dispute is still ongoing and it
does not sound like it's going to come to an
end any anytime soon. The reports say that these two
are still very far apart, and it's now been roughly
(15:59):
two weeks. So if you're YouTube TV subscriber, maybe well
maybe you were and now you're not. But you've got
no ESPN channels, And if you're a sports fan, I
would imagine at this point, given how long it's lasted,
you've missed out on some games that you wanted to watch.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
What I worry about here is the.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Opportunity that fans have had to truly go through the
experience of understanding, Okay, I thought I couldn't live without
not being able to watch Monday night football. I thought
it would be impossible to go without having ESPN for
a college football Saturday. But now you've been able to see,
did you really miss it as much as you thought?
(16:40):
I think the preference would still always be to habit,
But like a lot of things during the pandemic, we
learned that maybe we did not need things quite as
much as we thought we did. So I don't see
this as some type of revelation that, oh, yeah, we
thought people thought they like.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Sports, Now they don't.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
I mean, that's not reality. But I think if you
are YouTube TV, what you're doing here is you're charging
people still for something that they're not getting, which is
an issue. And I'm not picking sides, but I do
see both sides of it. I think YouTube TV, though
maybe a little bit lacking some self awareness because they
(17:21):
don't seem to understand that if live TV when it
comes to sports only existed on some let's just say
there was a platform that had all sports only sports.
There was no deal with the NFL or college football's conferences.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
It's just this is the only place you can go
to watch sports.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Well, a lot of people would have that and then
they wouldn't have any live TV platform because they don't
watch live TV unless it's a rare occasion or unless
it's sports. So I think you're daring your customers to
leave you with this and they'll survive again. YouTube tv
is owned by Google, but I'd say ESPN is gonna
(17:59):
end up winning this thing. But maybe I'm wrong, And
I did find it rich that YouTube tv did announce
yesterday because you've got a big game to night Monday
night football Eagles Packers, and ESPN will not be available
to YouTube tv subscribers once again. So they've offered a
twenty dollars credit to customers that are affected by this.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
But check this out. They're not just going to take
it off your bill.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
You got to go online, go through a process to
get it taken off your bill, and then wait, like,
why can't you just deduct the bill for everyone?
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Because it can't be that complicated.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
I guess they just know people are going to procrastinate
and not actually do it, and therefore they won't be
as financially impacted. But it's not like, well, this customer
doesn't have it, but this customer does know every customer
that you take money from is without something they're paying for,
so to not just have it removed from the bill
is disgusting. But I've already switched, so you know, good
(18:54):
luck YouTube TV. At least they're not giving them the
whole Yeah, we'll give you the twenty dollars back a
five dollars credit each month. I mean, that wouldn't shock
me either. I mean, and it's not as if it's
going to be impossible to get your money. But like again,
it's not some process that they can't do on their
own to at least accommodate customers paying customers.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
For this inconvenience.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Alright, Traffic, weather updates on
Speaker 1 (19:15):
The way, Sports updates on the way as well, right
here at DOWS Radio eight forty WHS
