Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is a cool twenty eight degrees, in fact, a
freezing twenty eight degrees. There's radio eight forty whas as
we get this Monday morning, started getting the week started
with you here. It is coffee and Company and we
are fueled by Thornton's myself, Nick Coffee Scuff, Fitzgerald and
John Shannon along for the ride today. So no snowshovels needed,
no school closures, anything like that. But winter has arrived

(00:21):
if you've yet to walk outside and feel those temperatures.
Technically the winter isn't here yet, but it certainly feels
like it. As I look at the traffic cameras throughout
the Kentucky and area, you can see there's dusting dustings.
I'm not sure what the best way to say that is,
but you can see that there is in.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Fact some snow out there.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Probably not going to amount to anything substantial, but maybe
it does. That's why we'll trust the experts. We'll have
another update for you when it comes to the forecast
today from Matt Melosovich of WLKY in just a few minutes.
But we did get an update from Mayor Greenberg over
the weekend that is I believe somewhat of a step

(01:01):
towards closure in this entire tragic situation from last week's
plane crash here in Louisville, we now know that a
total of fourteen people have lost their lives, Thirteen were
recovered at the site of the crash, and one victim
did end up losing their life after being transported to

(01:22):
the hospital from some burns. Again, just a tragic situation
all the way around. But knowing that those that were
missing have been accounted for, I think that is at
least some somewhat of a step in getting some closure,
especially for those that were waiting and hoping that what
they feared would not end up being what happened. But again,

(01:45):
just knowing, I can't imagine any level of being in
this situation at all under any circumstance, But just having
to wait and get that confirmation would be just it
would be torture. So again, thoughts and prayers to everybody
directly involved. Again, there's going to be different levels of

(02:05):
how you've been impacted by this, but no one impacted
more than those who have course lost their lives and
their family members and their close their loved ones, the
people close to them, just the level of devastation is
just something I hope to never ever experience. But here
is Mayor Greenberg's update on Saturday evening.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Good Evening, Louisville. The total number of victims that our
search and rescue teams have located at the site of
the tragic ups crash is thirteen. That matches the total
number of missing victims reports that have been submitted to LMPD.
Combined with the individual who passed at UFL hospital, that

(02:44):
brings the number of victims as a result of the
crash to fourteen. We pray that there are no more victims.
All the bodies are in the possession of the Jefferson
County Corners Office and she will make that information available
as soon as she identified the names of each of
the victims. May their memories be a blessing.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
So the business owners that that were that have been
a vac that have by the way, they have not
been able to get back full time and try to
reopen or anything like that just yet, but they were
allowed on Saturday forty five minutes to get in and
retrieve some things and uh, some of those business owners share.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Some of those business.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Owners shared what they were able to to to see,
and I'm sure it's it's a it's a visual of
of of of something. Especially if you own a business
and you you know you you you you launched it
from the ground up. It's something that you put a
lot of time and effort into put I mean put
everything into it.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Or even if you just are an.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Employee that that really cares about where you work, you've
been there a long time and you just have a
level of appreciation for being able to go there and
make a living. The visual of seeing what what this
this plane crash and the explosion and the fire, what
it did to it, it's probably it's it's something I'm
sure you never expected to see. But that's another part
of it that you really don't know how you would

(04:02):
react to that until you're in that.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Situation, until you see it.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
So some of these businesses, of course, are are every
day losing a lot of money because they're not open.
And again there's there's layers to the level of impact
that's going to be felt around here for a long
long time. But last week, knowing that that the scene
itself was just, i mean beyond belief and a lot

(04:26):
of us, most of us of course haven't seen it,
but hearing from Mary Greenberg, Governor esher and and I
think their reaction seemed to me to be very genuine
and real that that they hope to never see anything
like that. So with that, I just to me, this
could have lasted weeks as far as being able to
truly I identify everybody that was there, and and and

(04:48):
and again they're still going through that process specifically, but
as far as just the overall count of individuals they
did recovery.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
They've they've been able to do that.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
So again I look at this as a step towards
some some type of closure, but again still something that's
going to be felt around here for a for a
long long time.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Well, and I think politically you don't have to agree.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
With the mayor if you don't want to have I'm
sorry about them, that's all right.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
You do have to admit that the mayor and the
governor and the NTSB did a fantastic job at getting
information out to.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
No doubt mean well said Scott, and I don't I don't,
you know, we don't have anything to reference it because
these aren't things that happen every day. These are very
this is very rare and just something you never planned for.
But as as a citizen in this city, in this area,
you want to be updated as much as possible for
a variety of reasons. And I didn't really have any

(05:40):
any expectation, but I felt as if those in leadership
roles throughout this entire tragedy they handled themselves with composure,
with class, And I do feel like.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Leadership really really.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Shines in situations like this, And I feel like from
top to bottom, from our mayor to our governor, to
the leaders at LMPD, the Louisville Fire Department, in an organization,
I had no familiarity with the NTSB. You know. Again,
there's a very formal process to what it is that
they do. But I agree with what you said earlier
Scott that I feel as if they've.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Been more informative than I was expecting.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
So again, still a lot to learn as far as
the actual cause of this, but it sounds like the
real early win here in this process. The investigation, I
should say, is they were able to retrieve the black box,
and they do believe that it has good data. In fact,
I think they've confirmed that there's good data that will
give them a better indication of what could have potentially

(06:33):
caused this. So yeah, we'll get some closure, yes, no doubt,
no doubt about it. All right, it's seven eleven. We
got a busy morning. As we continue to roll along
here at news Radio eight forty whas it is the
day before the big game Louisville and Kentucky getting set
for round two of Mark Pope versus Pat Kelsey at
the Young Center tomorrow night. Feels weird, but hey, we're

(06:54):
not changing it. It's going to be played tomorrow, November
the eleventh, And I know, nothing else seems to matter
to me when this game is played.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
That's how.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
That's how big of a psycho. I am self admitted
psycho here, and I know I'm not alone. All right,
let's get to a quick time out trapping weather updates
on the way stick with us. It's Coffee and Company
field By Thornton's on news Radio eight forty whas it
is seven thirty six here at news Radio eight forty
whas Coffee and Company with you.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
We are field By Thornton's.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
I'm Nick Coffee, Scott Fitzgerald alongside also John Shannon.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
You just heard there and we've talked.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
A lot about the the day before is that's where
we are the day before the big game, Louisville and
Kentucky playing in basketball, and we'll get well, we'll have
plenty of time tomorrow to talk about that a little
bit further. But uh, Kentucky football over the weekend, what
a dare I say? Unexpected result? I mean, it's not
crazy to think that they were able to hold on
and beat Florida. Because Florida having a similar season as

(07:50):
Kentucky disappointing, they've already fired their coach. We're not that
far removed from Kentucky fans hoping that they could have
a season that will justify Mitch Barnhardt making a move
to fire Mark Stoops. But now they've won two in
a row and they were dominant against Florida. And again,
Florida is a team that doesn't have a whole lot

(08:11):
to play for. They've got an interim coach, they've lost
a lot of games. They're sitting at three and five,
now three and six, something like that. So what does
it actually mean if you're a Kentucky fan. I'd be
trying to figure that out myself. I will say, with
a thirty eight to seven victory, and then now your
win against Auburn looking maybe not valuable, but Auburn should

(08:31):
have beat Vanderbilt. I mean, Auburn out played Vandy and
ended up losing that game in overtime. So in a
two week window, here, Scott, we've got a much different
look at Kentucky football this season but also for the future.
And I had a hard time seeing Mitch Barnhart actually
making the move because of what it would cost to

(08:51):
get rid of Mark Stoops. Also, I just think he's
the kind of guy that would, more so than other
athletic directors, let his guy ride it out until he
simply can't anymore. Now, the level of that benchmark right
where you get to you simply can't anymore. I guess
that's all subjective, but at this point it's Look, they've
won two SEC games, which two weeks ago nobody would

(09:14):
have expected that, just because of how poorly they were
playing and just how down things were. But now they
look at every game left on their schedule, I would
imagine as one that they could win. And look, you
any team can win any game. There's upsets that take
place every weekend in college football. But what a different
world we are in for Kentucky football now compared to

(09:34):
to just just a couple of weeks.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
Ago, well and two, you know, you start getting kind
of bolly more familiar now with the offense. He didn't
get the start at the beginning of the year. He's
a little bit more familiar now with the offense. You know,
injuries have certainly played a role in Kentucky's performance this year.
It's had it's dingham somewhat to your point, had they
lost to Florida and lost those games, I think Mitch
martin Hardt's ham would have been forced. I think there

(09:57):
you'd have to absolutely find something to get done.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
And it also to it also Scott, I think would
have led to him because we started to get a
little bit of a feel that Stoops could read the
room to where he you know, it wasn't it wasn't
crazy for him to the way he was talking. After
they lost to Tennessee and they got crushed, that that
changed to where he started to just kind of wear
it as if this is this is over, to where

(10:21):
he probably would have had a conversation about Okay, look,
I'm gonna get a check on the way out of here.
But let's you know, we can talk about we could
talk about what that settlement actually is. So yeah, I
think it looked bad, but now not not so much.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
No, not at all. And then you turn your attention
out of the Florida Gators and do you think Lane
Kiffin's going to eventually take that job?

Speaker 2 (10:40):
I don't know. That's what that was the big talk,
And at least in social media.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Circles, they wanted Florida wanted Lane Kiffin last year before
they before they knew that Billy Napier was going to
get another season. So I think lane Kiffin, I imagine
he'll be able to pick whatever job he wants, but
he might stay put at Ole Miss. I mean, I
think lane Kiffin can win wherever he goes. But Florida
to me, is a good job with good resources. But
it's a job that I would I would stay away

(11:04):
from if I'm in a really good situation, which Lane
Kiffin is now. LS use a different story, because that's
one of the best jobs overall, and I could see
him having a tough time turning that one down. But
as far as stoops in his future at Kentucky, you
never really know. It's a week by week thing. But
I get the sense that right now again it could change. Yeah,

(11:26):
he's going to be there again next year, just because
of these two wins and really getting things headed in
the right direction, and his young quarterback looks like he's
going to be a guy that can really help them
succeed and get things turned around long term. Now you
look at the rest of their schedule. They've got Tennessee
Tech this weekend, which is a weird game to be
playing on November fifteenth, but they should have no problem there,
despite Tennessee Tech being a very good team at the

(11:46):
FCS level. But then you got Vandy on the road
in Louisville on the road. And if you're Kentucky, do
you feel like those are games that you can win
after watching your performances these last two weeks. I mean,
you could lose to both those teams and it wouldn't
be a shock. You're still going to be underdogs in
those games. But Vandy's look vulnerable and it's still Vandy.
I know they're not what they used to be, but

(12:06):
they are not going to be filled with talent that
you just can't overcome. And then the rivalry game, I mean,
if you're a Louisville fan and you've watched your team
all year, and you were at least paying a little
bit of attention to what Kentucky's done in recent weeks.
I mean, it's a game you could easily lose.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Now Louisville, of course, could come in play well and
blow Kentucky out. That's a scenario that could happen. But
Louisville has flirted with the type of losses all year
that they suffered on Saturday. They needed a big second
half against Virginia Tech. They really let it get too
close late until they pulled away finally with a late
touchdown to beat Boston College. And those are not good teams,

(12:41):
by the way. And then you look at Pittsburgh earlier
this year. They had to erase a twenty one nothing
depth was sit after the first quarter. So it's always
nice to be able to find a way to win
and hold on. You have resilience, You get good reps
at overcoming adversity. It definitely develops you to be able
to do that better than others that have never been
in that situation. But you also need to look in
the mirror that you're in that situation. Overall, and Louisville

(13:01):
could not climb out. It never felt like they had
control of that game at all on Saturday, and it's
a loss that certainly changes the ceiling for Louisville season,
And I think it it's the realization if you're a
Louisville fan that, yeah, you could went out still finished
with a ten and two record and have a great
season overall as far as just your wins, but you
could also lose to anybody left on the schedule, including

(13:22):
your rival, and that would be a really, really, really
tough thing to see happen, but it's it's a real possibility.
There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
I think if you're Louisville fan, just has to be
concerned about the inconsistency at quarterback play, which the polar
opposite is happening at Kentucky now because Carter Bowlie certainly
is finding his own rhythm. It's a tale of two
cities when it comes to those teams and could be
a huge factor come that season finale.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
It's I if I had to guess, I would say
that Miller Moss will be the quarterback in the Governor's
Cup game. But I'm also willing to say, I could
be totally wrong there. I just Jeff doesn't usually pull
a guy, but he's now in a situation where his
quarterback is is a is a detriment the quarterback. He's
made some plays, Miller Moss has shown some talent, but

(14:05):
at times he makes mistakes that can get you fired
from your job. So anything's on the table at this point.
All right, we've got traving other updates on the way
on this cold Monday morning. Stick with us. It is
Coffee and Company, and we are fueled by Thordon's right
here at news Radio eight forty Whas.

Speaker 2 (14:21):

They're offering zero percent financing on the twenty twenty five

no gimmicks, just the brand new twenty twenty five at
fort f one fifty for again zero percent financing. So
head out to XIT eighteen in Oldham County right outside

talking about the brand new twenty twenty five for f

(15:04):

Offer expires number thirty to the seed dealer for details.
All right, So again we've got quick updates coming your
way here. When it comes to the roadways, been a
pretty busy morning. I don't know if we can chalk

(15:27):
it up to the snow, but certainly some accidents you
need to be mindful of. I know our listeners out
the Dixie Highway area. The Salt River Bridge had a
real bad accident and that has caused some real issues
heading northbounds, so we'll keep you updated on that situation
as well as other traffic issues this morning. Again, don't
believe any of this can be chalked up to slick roadways,

(15:49):
but it is cold. It's freezing outside. Quite literally, it's
below freezing. We've got some snow dustings throughout the area.
Could have some snow showers in bursts a little bit
later on this afternoon, so be mindful of that. But again,
you'll get updates from Amlosovic as well as Bobby Ellis
and we've got a sports update also coming your way
next right here at News Radio eight forty whis

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
