Speaker 1 (00:00):
And hopefully we get a good game tonight. If you
did not know, which would be hard for me to imagine,
you wouldn't have been picked up on it by now.
But I am a Louisville fan, So what I'm hoping
for is Louisville to use this opportunity tonight on their
home floor as the favored team to start making this
thing a little bit more competitive. The last win for

(00:22):
Louisville in this series was in two thousand and twenty.
It was the I'm Sorry twenty twenty. The game was
played in twenty twenty, but it was the twenty twenty
twenty twenty one season where they played in a reduced
capacity throughout the year. Really weird year for college hoops.
But it was Chris Max's last matchup in the rivalry,

(00:42):
and since then Louisville has not not been able to
pull one off. Obviously, the Kenny Payne era was a disaster,
and then last year competitive game in rupt but obviously
Kentucky they prevailed. So prior to the win against the
Cats in twenty twenty one, it was Rick Patino's last

(01:03):
matchup in this rivalry. Whenever that season is also a
Tuesday Night, which I believe at that time it was
the first time in a long long time, maybe the
first time ever, that these two teams played on a weeknight.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
It felt weird.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
ESPN did a weird version of college Basketball College Game
Day on a Tuesday. But that's what this matchup brings.
It's a it's a primetime opportunity for ESPN to say, hey,
when it comes to college hoops, we've got we've got
the best matchups you're going to see. So maybe that
maybe that helps Louisville tonight. I'm not sure. I think
both teams, I don't think any I don't think Tuesday
gives any team a certain advantage here. But that was

(01:40):
the year where Kentucky had a really Both teams were
really good that year. Louisville had a two seed and
ended up losing in the second round of Michigan. Kentucky,
they might have had a national championship team, but the
only team that that beat them, well, the team that
beat them was the team who wanted all. That was
Carolina on the Luke May buzzer beater that that the
Kentucky lost in that Elite Eight game. But as far

(02:00):
as personnel, it was Donovan Mitchell, Dangadell, Racepaulding, Quentin Snyder,
he had himself a heck of a game in that one.
And then for Kentucky it was deeron Fox Malik Monk.
So that's how long it's been since Louisville one, I
guess a game where it was normal.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
And the twenty twenty twenty twenty one game.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
I mean it counts, but it was such a weird
year overall that I think it's probably a blur for
a lot of people, but maybe not for Louisville fans
because again, there haven't been many of those wins to
come by. So again, tonight, eight o'clock on ESPN. If
you have YouTube TV and you haven't noticed that you
don't have ESPN because you don't watch a lot of sports,
be advised you won't have it tonight, So you might
want to figure out some alternative arrangements. But one of

(02:39):
my favorite stories from this rivalry that really just signifies
what it is around here is something that happened in
twenty twelve when these two teams were getting ready to
play each other in the Final four. Think about that
Final four, Louisville and Kentucky. Rick Pittino versus John Caliperi.
That may be at the peak of this rivalry when

(03:01):
it comes to just how much, you know, talk about
what's on the line, what's at stake in the final four.
But also that's final four gets so much attention compared
to really any other college basketball events. So with that,
I mean it was a chance for people who don't
follow college basketball in December or November, early November now
here on November eleventh, to really see what this rivalry

(03:22):
is all about within this city and of course within
this state. But there was the fight at the dialysis clinic.
This is from WKYT again. This was back in twenty twelve.
Two elderly gentlemen. They couldn't control the emotion, the hatred
between these two programs when they were at a dialysis
center in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
The rivalry between UK and U of L fans runs deep,
but police say they've never been called to a place
like this to break up a fight between fans. Police
are calling it a flagrant foul.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
I think this is a first at a dialysis clinic.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Officers were called after a UK and U of L
gave each other a full court press during treatment Monday.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
You just happened to think that of l U of
L would beat the UK, and he started running his mouth.
That's what That's what started.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
To I ain't talk to him about the ball again.
I'll talk to another guy about the ball. He met
me and told me shut up and then give me
the finger. I said, what, I'm not talking to you.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Both men admit they were in the zone, but never
anticipated there'd be a power forward.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
I wasn't gonna take no more of him.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
You know, I'm setting there, hooked up to a machine
and I can't do anything, and.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
I weren't told and I hit him and he made her.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
But I hear by the time police arrived, the fight
was over.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
I'm just sorry it even happened. Hopefully they just he
won't come in the same time I do anymore.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Wilson does say that he won't be pressing and he
charges against Taylor, but he does say that he helps
the Wildcats win and georgeout. Elizabeth dorriset wky T twenty
seven News.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
First injected into my veins no pun intended when it
comes to the dialysis clinic, but talk about they didn't
anticipate they did be a flagrant foul.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
I mean, was that by design?

Speaker 1 (05:06):
I mean that was that was the punniest UH news
story via television news I've ever heard, and it was
well done. And again that's that's that's one of many
examples of just what this does to us.

Speaker 6 (05:19):
You know, it's it's fun, Nick, I was hearing, you know,
when when you've been down, and we've all been there,
when our team's been down in a rivalry for so long, you.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Telling me right and laughing to not cry now, and that.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Feeling you know you can it plays both angles basketball
for when Louisville's been down, and then maybe in football
when Kentucky football was down, they started to get the
edge on louis a little bit.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
But that feeling you get when.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
Your team turns that corner in that one game that
changes the rivalry is like no other. I remember the
first time Michigan beat Ohio State to kind of snap
that skid, and it doesn't matter who your school is.
That is insane feeling and it's one you'll never ever forget.
And you know, I'm just looking forward. This is why
I love rivalries, and I've been here twenty five years now.

(06:09):
In full disclosure Our house is a yo L house.
My son grew up a yob L fan, my wife's
a YOL fan. But it's been fun being a part
of this and it to your point, it doesn't matter
what day of the week they play this thing on.
The energy is still.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
There, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
And when it comes to the emotion that's involved, there's
good emotion, bad emotion, depending upon what happens. But I
think the stronger of the feelings is you just want
to avoid what it feels like when you lose it.
The win the wind feels great, yeah, and it'll feel
like it's what you were supposed to do, But what's
really on the line is avoiding the feeling you get

(06:44):
when you don't come out on the winning end. And yes,
we're a little numb to it on this side, but
look their favorites, and I doesn't mean they can't lose.
I think Kentucky's got a good chance of winning. I
really have no clue what actually is going to happen
to night, but I look at both teams and I
feel as good as I felt in the long time
about their ability to win this game as a Louisville
fan myself. And again, if you're Kentucky fan, maybe you

(07:04):
feel the same way about your squad.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Totally get it.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Both teams are a top twenty caliber and could be
two of the better teams in the country this year,
could be in the file of four this year. That's
all realistic. So all right, quick update of Travick in weather.
It's a cold, cold day as we get it started,
but go to warm up however, but the sunshine is
going to be a big factor in how warm it
feels outside, and I'm not sure if that sunshine's going
to cooperate, but we will get an update for Matt Melosovich.
Hope you stick with us right here. It's news Radio

(07:26):
eight forty whas. Happy Veterans Day to all the veterans
out there. Take some time, make a phone call. I
was gonna say, sit a text message, but don't.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
I mean you can.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
That's okay, that's the thought, and maybe that's just the
relationship with that you have with somebody that you know
as a veteran. But make them feel appreciated today because
they should feel that every day, but certainly on a
day that is Veterans Day. It is news Radio eight
forty whas Coffee and company with you, and we are
fueled by Thornton's appreciate you hanging out with us. A
cold start, it's a veterans day, but it is going

(07:59):
to warm up. It's going to feel warm dependent upon well, well,
let me let me just back up.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I lied to you.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
It's not gonna feel warm at all today because it's
still gonna be cold. But the sunshine can go a
long way, and if that sunshine appears, it won't won't
be too bad. But we are getting an improvement from
yesterday where it was it felt like the winner. It
looked like the winner. We were talking about a basketball
game that usually takes place in the dead heat of
the winter. So yeah, it'll be warmer today, but still

(08:25):
right now it's it's cold, so be prepared, all right. Look,
I love shining a spotlight on people that make Louisville
such a great place to live, and one of those
people is my good friend Bob Sicholer, the Secolar team
at Remax Properties East, because he has helped so many
when it comes to the experience of buying and selling
a home, and he can do that for you right now.
The market has been a big discussion in recent months

(08:48):
because of the interest rates, because of just it not
being reportedly a good time to buy or sell, and
there's data that backs that upunderstand why that is in
fact news. But what I would encourage you to do
is not block it out. You can keep you can
keep up with it, but don't let that what is

(09:09):
out there when it comes to the coverage keep you
from pursuing a potential chance to be in your dream
home or a potential chance to sell your home, and
take advantage of what the market can do for you
as somebody putting your house on the market. So experience matters.
Bob and his team, they've got more than two decades
worth of proven success in Louisville and southern Indiana. Bob

(09:30):
Sicoler knows how to price your home, he knows how
to market it, knows how to negotiate, so you don't
leave a dime on the table. I've seen the results.
He's got happy clients everywhere because that's what he does.
He takes care of him. So when it comes to
this process, don't let what is out there keep you
from taking advantage of again either being in the home
of your dreams or selling your home and maybe financially

(09:54):
changing your life. That's not a stretch for some folks.
So again, all you have to do is google the
Cecolar team it's s ok O l e R. Or
visit we Sell Louisville dot com. You'll see everything you
need to see when it comes to the great reviews
they have from customers and of course all the homes
that are listed on the website. So again it's we
Sell Louisville dot com. It's Bob Sicolar and the Cecolar

(10:15):
team at Remax Properties Ease. You can give Bob a
call directly FABO two three seven six five four eight three,
and again the website is we Sell Louisville dot com.
All right, we've got traffiing weather updates on the way. Also,
we've got another sports update coming your way. What I
do want to talk about at some point, probably before
too long, we need to hit it because the the
recent I guess push to really impact and almost kill

(10:39):
the hemp industry in this state. It's it's pretty scary
for those that depend on these products and certainly those
that depend on jobs in this industry. So we'll tell
you what Mitch McConnell is attempting to do. And I
think it's one of those things if you're not paying
attention and you are somebody that that is depending on
products of of of THHC products, I should say, this

(11:02):
is this is scary. So again look at that in
a lot more. Right here at NewsRadio eight forty WHS.
It is coffee and company with you here at news
Radio eight forty WHAS and we are fueled by Thornton's
Nick Coffee.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
That's me.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
You just heard John Channon, Scott Fitzgerald alongside as well,
and you can take us with you wherever you go.
Listen live at WHS dot com. Also listen live on
the iHeartRadio app. And if you want to interact with
us and share some thoughts, questions, complaints, compliments, insults, fire away,
you can do that on the talkback line that is
percented by Alex R. White PLLCSEUD Distracted Driver dot com.

(11:38):
And it's pretty easy to do. All you have to
do is click the microphone button that is on the
iHeart app and you'll be good to go.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
We were rocking this morning.

Speaker 6 (11:48):
Right and getting at Rocky Vibe going next. That's what
Kentucky little.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Volume setting but I just feel like it's very, very loud,
but it's probably just because I haven't turned up really loud.

Speaker 6 (11:57):
Yeah, I just got this.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
I'm on high, high alert. It's six thirty in the
morning because of it being game day, right, it's just it.
It does something to us.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
But good stuff. How many people you think will be
focused at work today? Oh gosh, it's almost like tournament times.
So two ways to look at it. It'll be hard
to focus for some. I wouldn't be shocked if the
overall expectation at the workplace, workplace, certain workplaces are going
to be different today, just because everybody can be real
with ourselves and know that our minds are on that game.

(12:29):
But also to keep yourself from, you know, getting too anxious,
you might just get lost in work, right, and that
and maybe that is maybe that's the silver lining in
this game being on a work day for a lot
of people, because when it's on a Saturday, which it
typically is, you you know, you end up just sitting
and waiting.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
If it's at noon, if it's at three thirty.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
It's rarely ever been a night game on a weekend,
but you know, you wake up and you're just waiting
for it to tip off. Now you wake up, you
gotta go to work, you gotta go to school, you
gotta do some things. So maybe that can make it
to where you don't you don't get his anxious leading
up to tip off. But again, I'm sure everybody handles
this day differently, and I'm sure some will observe from
afar and not really have any rooting interests. There are

(13:10):
a lot of people who are transplants, people who who
have lived here a long time, but they don't have
any direct individual allegiance to one of the sides here.
I mean, Scott, you're one of those people. You you're
from Michigan. You certainly understand rivalries when it comes to
college level Michigan and Ohio State. Hard to find a
college football rivalry better than that one. But you you know,

(13:32):
you don't have You didn't grow up here rooting for
one of the two. But obviously your family has rooting
interest and that that makes you a U of l household,
of course, But you are You're you're indifferent, and uh,
it's a rare perspective to have because so many of
us are without it. Without hesitation going to be able
to tell you which one you you love, which one

(13:53):
you hate?

Speaker 2 (13:53):
Yeah, exactly, And that's been the beauty. That's what I
love about.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
This this position, and that is and I totally I
share with you. Off year, I took a lot of
inspiration from our own Sid Jenkins, who used.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
To be here, who I never understood.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
When I first moved here. My family was all U
of L house, Everything was bad about blue and YadA
YadA yah. And then I look at a guy like Sid,
and I'm like, how does that guy walk down the
middle Because it felt like to me when I first
moved here that you either one or the other. When
you lived here, there was no middle ground. Now there
were houses divided. I get that. But then I watched Sid,
and now, after being in this role for so long,

(14:26):
I start to appreciate the balance that Sid had. And again, well,
we'll go home and root for U of L tonight
when I come in here in the morning. I can
respect cat fans who talked to me here in the
office are on. John Shannon's a cat fan, and you
know I can respect that. And I can respect the
press conferences and coaches opinions. It's a different vibe.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Yeah, Look, my in laws, my stepfather. I have so
many my best friends, I have so many people that
I'm close to that I love dearly.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
That are that are on the other side.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
And I long ago realized, and this is a very
simple thing to do if you if you at times
just can't control how heated and argument gets about cards
versus cats, and it's with somebody that you you know,
it never needs to get to that level because it's
somebody that you love, might even be your wife or
your husband. The advice I would give you is that

(15:19):
just just accept one thing and it changes everything. You're
never going to change their mind.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
There's no point in arguing about like what are you
arguing for. There's never now again if you're just looking
for somebody to own it and say, yeah, your team
got mine, they were better. I mean you might get that,
but that that's not going to fulfill you the way
that you think it is because it's just non it's
it's just gonna be NonStop. So I don't I don't

(15:46):
get I don't go back and forth when it comes
to the rivalry with with really anybody anymore. I used
to get into the battles on the internet with the trolls,
and then I realized I need to grow up and
that isn't worth my time. But when it comes to
people that I love, there's really no need. We can
talk about each other's team, but like, we don't do
the trash talk or who do you think is gonna win?

(16:07):
And why just because it's really a wasted exercise that
can only potentially lead to us getting worked up, not
to the level of where we wouldn't be friends or
wouldn't still be close. But it's just you know, I
realized what am I doing here? Not only am I
never going to change their mind, They're never gonna change
mind even like let's just say, and I'll use this
and use this as an example. My best friend, he's

(16:28):
the best man in my wedding. His name is Matt.
He is as diehard as a Kentucky fan as I know,
and he's he's like a brother to me and he
and I growing up.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
What would go back and forth?

Speaker 1 (16:38):
And you know it would be real heated because you
know that's just what the rivalry does.

Speaker 6 (16:42):
Well.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
I thought about it one day, if if Louisville just
started running away with the rivalry, which hard to see
that happening, but hey, maybe it will. And then he
decided to be well, gosh, my team, they're just they're
not holding their they're not pulling their weight anymore. And gosh,
I'm starting to feel the way you feel. I think
I'm a louisvill fan. Now I would want to punch
him in the face because I would be like, no,

(17:03):
you're not. This is what are you doing? This is no,
this is weird, Like it's first of all, it.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
Wouldn't be genuine.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
It would be weird, and it just would it would
feel wrong. And I don't remember if if it goes
back to this specific moment, but his wife, she's a
Louisville fan and she's not into it like we are.
But she went to u of L and she she's
not even really big into sports, but she knows what
this rivalry is with our culture. So it's you know,
she's she she puts U of L stuff in their

(17:28):
house too, right, I mean it's mostly blue. But he
when his oldest son, who's now I believe ten or eleven,
whenever he was a baby, and the families on opposite
sides of the rivalry were going back and forth joking
about which side he's gonna pick. I remember thinking like, no, Matt,
Matt's Son's gonna be UK fan. There's no I cannot,
This would be too weird.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
I can't.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
And it's also like, because of how because of how
close we are as friends, I know it would be
devastating for him if his son suret for Louisville, so
I didn't want that to happen to him. So uh,
it's I'm gonna get corny throughout the morning, and I'm
sure I already have because I know a lot of
people are not as into sports as others, and that's
totally fine, but this, this this rivalry is such a

(18:10):
part of our culture here in Louisville.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
And you can be a.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Non sports fan, you can be somebody that doesn't you
doesn't typically just spend a lot of time consuming sports content.
But you know what this day is, what this moment is,
and I love it because, again, I'll be honest with you,
I feel like my foot in the door in the
industry that I'm in now was possible just because of
how how how much college basketball matters around here. There

(18:38):
was a market at the time for somebody to get
a platform and talk about these things and it, you know,
it changed my life.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
You know, so, uh, I love it. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
I wish Louisville would pull their way a little bit more,
and hopefully that will start happening, you know. On my end,
of course, I'm sure at Kentucky fans are thinking, well,
I hope we continue to dominate, because that's that's what
they've been.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Able to do. But it's big around here, and I
wouldn't have any other way.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
My wife's best friend is a Kentucky fan. I remember
every year, if we didn't go out and her friend
was available, I would default to her friend. I'd stay
home and watch the game, but they would go out
somewhere together and watch the game together. She's Kentucky fans.
My wife's a Louisville fan. But back to what you
said before we take a break real quick, Nick, and
that is this. It was clear to me after I

(19:21):
first moved here that this game, this game, not the
football game, not the soccer game, not the volleyball game.
This game is a fabric woven into this society and
it's part of this area's identity, and nobody should ever
apologize for being a fan of one of the other schools. Amen,
you know, and you stick with your team and you
ride them out through the thick and thin. But most importantly,

(19:41):
it's a celebration of this community. No matter who wins tonight,
it's gonna get ugly. There's gonna be ugly moments. I
get that there's gonna be some rough days that in
about twenty four hours. There's gonna be some rough days
at the water cooler for folks depending on which side
drew on. But cherish this game and really kind of
hold it close to the best because it is a
special part of this community.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
And we we're getting there a little bit over thirteen
hours away from tip off. All right, let's get caught
up on the traffic out there. We'll see how we're
looking on the roadways. Bobby Ellis will get us caught
up there. Matt Melosovich has the forecast for us cold
right now and gonna be cold throughout the day, but
we will warm up to warmer tempts than what we
had yesterday. So I guess that's good news. Stick with
us right here.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
