Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is seven oh five here in news Radio eight forty.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Whas Coffee and Company with you, and we are field
by Thornton's appreciate you hanging out with us. Take us
with you wherever you go. Listen live on the iHeartRadio app.
Also listen live at whas dot com. And if you
want to share your thoughts, contribute to the show, get
something off your chest, you can always do that on
the talkback line on the iHeart Radio app. And that
of course is powered by Alex R. White Pllcseudistracted Driver
(00:26):
dot com. All right, so there is a new provision
tucked inside the Senate government funding bill that could really
cripple Kentucky's hemp industry, which is concerning if you're somebody
that works in said industry, or if you're somebody that
is in Kentucky and you rely on the products that
(00:49):
come from the hemp industry. So this is Mitch McConnell
that has reportedly inserted this into the funding bill, and
it would ban ingestable hemp products with any detectable amount
of THC, even trace levels found in the non intoxicating
CBD oils that are out there. We're talking gummies, drinks,
(01:09):
and that of course would outlaw a lot of the
hemp derived products that companies sell. There are two of
the biggest in the area here that I'm pretty sure
just about everything on their shelves would not be allowed
if this, If this goes through, so a real concern,
(01:31):
and there's some pushback. Senator Ran Paul is working to
strip this provision from the bill, warning that it would
devastate an industry that now is worth roughly three hundred
million dollars annually. And again, it supports people's jobs, and
there are people who rely on these products. It's not
an exaggeration to say that some of these products can
be life changing for people as far as just dealing
(01:53):
with anxiety, with trouble sleeping, those kind of things. So,
I mean, I think what this, what this comes down to,
This is about protecting kids from these products because they'll
still be able to get access to them if they
really want to. I mean, that's just the reality. Hate
to be so blunt, but this to me is all
to do a favor for the bourbon industry and the
(02:16):
HMP market here in Kentucky. The CBD oils, the gummies,
the seltzers, now it's growing fast, and I don't think
that the bourbon industry should see it as competition, but
I guess they do. And I do get it when
it comes to just competing in businesses. But I think
Bourbon is going to be able to withstand any competitor
(02:37):
because it's such a fixture within our culture around here,
and there are people who come to this state just
to experience Bourbon Country, and I just this would be
you know, I'm somebody that does rely on these products.
I don't just take them for enjoyment. Sometimes I do,
but also when it comes to dealing with anxiety and
(03:00):
in stress, I mean popping one of the CBD gummies
before I go to before I get selled in it,
and I can help me relax, help get me to sleep,
and just it does the trick. And I don't have
to be on medication that I've got to take three
different types of it over a six month period to
one figure out which one works in which one I
shouldn't take because of all the negative side effects, and
(03:23):
or figure out which one might make me worse before
I get better. So it's replaced medication that I'm glad
I don't have to take anymore. So I mean, to me,
this is obvious that that's a part of it. I'm
sure others may not see it that way, and that's fine.
But what's crazy is that this is somebody who helped
(03:45):
I mean, Mitch McConnell is somebody who really helped this
become what it is today, meaning the hemp industry in
this state, and the guy now leading the charge to
eliminate it potentially is the same guy who again in
two thousand and eight eighteen, was instrumental in the growth.
Not to say he's the only one, but he built
(04:07):
it in the eyes of some and now he's trying
to sneak something in that would essentially burn it down.
So I mean, look, Kentucky's have industry. We're talking three hundred,
three hundred million dollars a year. It supports real people, growers, manufacturers,
small business owners, and they could get steamrolled. So maybe
the bourbon world doesn't see any potential threat of competition.
(04:31):
Who doesn't love bourbon, by the way, it's part of
who we are in Kentucky. But there's room for both.
We don't have to kill one to protect the other, right,
And I just I just have a hard time looking
at anybody with a straight face and saying this is
about safety. That's why we need to do this, because
we need to keep people safe. I mean, to me,
it's it. There's there's other motives here, and I'm hopeful
(04:53):
that rand Paul is successful in everybody is that's trying
to keep this from happening, because there's a lot of
layers to who this would impact and to tell us, well,
we have to do it because it's about safety. Please
get out of here with that, all right, We've got
travving in weather updates coming to you shortly. Gonna be
cold again today, but should be warmer than yesterday. The
(05:16):
sun if it makes an appearance, that'll help, but still
gonna be cool temperatures before we warm up later on
in the week. Someone want to get to on the
other side. Jeff Brahm, his family, including his brother's offensive
coordinator and Miller Moss. They were victims of terroristic threats
made by some idiot on the internet. And rarely do
(05:37):
idiots on the internet and get held accountable. We're in luck.
An idiot on the internet in Texas. He's been indicted
because he learned the hard way. You can't just say
whatever you want on the Internet and not expect there
to be consequence. So we'll talk about that. If you
haven't heard the story, it's wild stick with us right here.
It's a news radio A forty whas not a story
(05:57):
I expected to be on the docket today. But given
how crazy people get over sports, and sometimes people get
crazy over sports when it comes to a bet they lost,
maybe I should have expected this. Texas man indicted accused
of threatening U of L football coach, quarterback and others.
So a man has been charged with threatening Jeff Brohm,
(06:21):
Jeff's family, and not just his family meeting, his wife,
his children, but his brother who's the offensive coordinator, Brian Brohm,
and then his quarterback, Miller Moss. So this is a
man that's in Texas and he's been indicted on these charges,
six counts of terroristic threatening and one count of attempted
theft by extortion of over ten thousand dollars. His name
(06:43):
is Brian Mandel, and these crimes took place November eighth
and ninth, and the extortion attempt involves Miller Moss. That's
one that I don't know what I mean, what the
I mean I'm sure it's just saying something stupid on
his Twitter account. Maybe maybe Miller has DMS open and
he sends something to But this followed Louisville's loss to California,
(07:04):
and obviously that's.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
A game Louisville was favored by quite a.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Bit didn't win, And maybe that means Brian Mendel lost
some money.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Because of a wager that he made.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
So this guy's been indicted, not arrested, and there's no
mugshot available just yet.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
So what a world we live in?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
UFL released a statement yesterday responding to the indictment quote,
We're aware of the recent indictment on an individual who
issued threats directed at our head football coach, his wife
and kids, members of his coaching staff, and student athletes.
The safety and well being of our students, staff, and
community remain our highest priority. We come in law enforcement
for their swift and divisive or decisive action in addressing
(07:41):
this matter. Threats of violence have no place in our
community or in sports, and we will continue to work
closely with authorities to ensure a safe environment for all.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
So people letting the pressure of sports get to him
a little too much sounds.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Like yeah, and not to be so cynical, but I
just look at this as well, I'm glad they made
an example out of somebody, because this is probably happening
every week to some coach or player that didn't come
through and play well enough for a guy or girl
(08:14):
to win a bet. And I think the more you
can you can really hold somebody accountable and make an
example of them, not only will it keep others from
being as stupid, it maybe will wake people up as
far as just how how far they've gone. And some
people can do that and it won't even be wager related.
(08:34):
They can just be because they're just that they're just
that into a game. But also when you do put
a big bet down and you realize you put more
than you should have, and if the bet doesn't come through,
you can't make the mortgage payment, you can't pay child support,
whatever it may be, I mean this is that you
clearly have gone a little too far well, and it.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Takes it takes the urgency rhythm up tenfold. And we're
seeing more of this nick and it's because people and
I don't saying this is the case here, but we
are seeing more of it because it is people are
laying down money on the games, and it starts to
become a bit more excessive. And like you said earlier
this morning, I'm with you. I'm not against betting. I'm
not anti betting at all. I think it's I advocated
(09:14):
for on this show for a long time we needed.
It brings great revenue to the state. But it is
important that if you know somebody who maybe you see
could be laying down some money, maybe they're gonna do
it tonight on the Kentucky Louisville game, and you think
that person needs help, find a way to get them
some help. Because gambling addiction is real. And I'm not
again not saying this guy that's what this case was,
(09:34):
but man, it's it's real, and people will go to
great lengths if they lose that mortgage payment.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
I think gambling has always been something we did around here,
even before sports gambling became legal, and I'd be foolish
to assume that with it now being not only accessible
and legal, it's in your face.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Yes, So I'm.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Sure that has impacted some to just catch the rush
and dive right in and maybe get ahead of the themselves.
But uh, you know, when it comes to the should it,
should it or should it not be legal? People are
gonna do it regardless I was doing it, regardless of
being legal here in other states or by other means.
And yes we are benefiting from it. But like anything
in life, people are people get addicted to something. They're gonna,
(10:16):
they're gonna they're gonna go to great, great links, unfortunately,
criminal issues and just unthinkable things to get to get
to something that they're addicted to. So the more awareness
about help and the more I guess exposure to those
that do get carried away and let it get the
best of them. Mean, if anything, this this guy in Texas,
if he hadn't had a wake up call yet, this,
(10:36):
this should be it.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Right.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
He needs to get his life together, no doubt about that.
All right, let's get to a quick update of traffic
and weather. We've also got another sports update coming your way.
It is a Veterans Day edition of Coffee and Company.
It's a game day edition of Coffee and Company. And
we are fueled about Thornton's right here at News Radio
eight forty w h as. It is a game day
a day in this state, certainly the city that's different
(10:57):
than most because of what's on the line tonight, ragging
rights Louisville fans and Kentucky fans in a similar situation
where where it's year two for new coaches in new eras,
but for Louisville they need to start pulling their weight
when it comes to the rivalry. And we'll see what
happens tonight, We'll see what happens moving forward. But as
(11:19):
a Louisville fan myself, I do think they're in better
shape now than they've been in a long time to
be competitive towards the top of college basketball. And I'm
sure Kentucky fans understandably feel the exact same way about
their teams.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
So we'll never get to the level of.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Hatred and just intensity that was there when it was
Rick Vcal because that was just different for one obvious reasons.
Those guys were personal rivals and they were coaching within
the biggest rivalry in college basketball. Now, I think it
is and I'm I'm objective, but also I understand why
(11:57):
many would say, no, it's not. It's Duke in Carolina.
And I've got I've got one specific thing that I
always bring up. We'll get to that later on, because
that's not where I'm going right now. But Mike, if
given the opportunity to debate, to challenge those that say
that Carolina Duke is the best rivalry, I always go
back to one thing. But I'll save that for later
on because what I want to get to is just
(12:17):
the insane level of intensity that you could just feel it.
You could feel it leading up to the Rick Patino
versus John Caliperi games, because again it's those two guys
hate each other still do they times act like they don't,
And clearly Patino just has some kind of complex with Cal,
and it showed last year where Cal's team, who barely
(12:39):
got in the tournament, beat Rick, who was a two
seed and the NSA Tournament in the second round. So
that rivalry runs deep, but it's really its own rivalry.
So we're not going to get back to that level
as far as just the hatred, because I just don't
think you can manufacture that. I think Mark Pope and
Pac Kelsey genuinely like each other. I think they are
legitimately not friends, but they respect one another, and you
(13:02):
can't you can't fake the level of animosity that was
between John Caliperry and Rick Matino now, when it comes
to the rovalry being competitive, I do think we're at
a time where potentially this could become one of the
more competitive eras within the rivalry. But let's go back
in time twenty twelve when Louisville and Kentucky met in
the final four, and that was at the height of
(13:26):
Rick v coal Cal got his title in twenty twelve.
Rick got his the year later, and when they met
in the final four, I remember thinking, and I was
at a much younger age. I remember thinking, you know,
this may never happen again in my lifetime, and live
in the moment, embrace it. And Louisville, of course, came
up short. And it was the one rare situation where
I had a hard time genuinely being that bothered because
(13:48):
Kentucky was just that good that year. Louisville really wasn't
supposed to be there, to be honest with you, but
they were riding an unexpected final four run, and of
course that team, a lot of those guys came back
and won a title the next year. But back in
twenty twelve, when they played in the final four, things
got intense. At a dialysis clinic in Georgetown, Kentucky where
a Louisville fan and a Kentucky fan. We're getting into
(14:12):
it so much so that the cops had to be called.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
The rivalry between UK and U of L fans runs deep,
but police say they've never been called to a place
like this to break up a fight between fans. Police
are calling it a flagrant foul.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
I think this is a first.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
At a dialysis clinic.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Officers were called after a UK and U of L
fan gave each other a full court press during treatment Monday.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
You just happened to think that of L U of
L would beat the UK, and he started running his mouth.
That's what that's what's starting.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
I ain't talk to him about the ball game. I'll
talk to another guy about the ball. He met them
and told me shut up and then give me the finger.
I said, what, I'm not talking to you.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
Both men admit they were in the zone, but never
anticipated there'd be a power forward.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I wasn't gonna take no more of him.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
And you know, I'm setting her hooked up to the machine
and I can't do it and I.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Won't top and I hit it and he made heart.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
But I by the time police arrived, the fight was over.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
I'm just sorry it even happened. Hopefully they just he
won't come in the same time I do anymore.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
Wilson does say that he won't be pressing any charges
against Taylor, but he does say that he helps the
Wildcats win and George Stout Elizabeth dorriset wky T twenty
seven News.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
First, if that doesn't give you a sense for what
this does for us in this state, then I'm not
sure what will two elderly gentlemen in a dialysis clinic,
probably there because they that's where they are in life,
and yet what's on their mind is the enemy that's
also there, and wanting them to know who's going to
(15:46):
come out on top when these two teams meet in
the final four. How about the puns though didn't anticipate
there'd be a flagrant fowl Scott, Yeah, right, and they
gave each other a full court press.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
They both men admit they were they were in the zone,
but they didn't anticipate that it would power forward. I mean,
that's I mean, that's before AI. I feel like that
sounds like an AI script. It does, but AI didn't
exist back whenever, at least not to this levels back
in twenty twelve. So Elizabeth, great job begain. That's from
wk YT fifteen years thirteen years ago.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Wow, And I'm sure you know that's that's going to
be played out, not to that extreme mind, but in
other forms, probably all day to day, probably tomorrow again.
Oh yeah, people are probably by now, most people have
if you work the day shift, are probably in your
car and your way to work. But other's probably pulling
out that red or blue gear that they're going to
wear to work today and see what they can come about.
(16:41):
And be interesting to see how how early folks start
gathering downtown today prior to the game. Those that are
lucky enough to have tickets, I did not get a chance.
I wanted to see what the ticket price was going
for this game too as well.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
I guess I probably need to.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
I had somebody yesterday asking if I knew anybody that
had tickets, and I told them I didn't, and they
were they were willing to pay a lot of money.
And that's just what this that's what this game is.
And really, more than anything, the Louisville hasn't hosted a
game where they had momentum on their side as far,
not not necessarily with the rivalry solely, but more so
(17:15):
just with their top twenty team right now. And the
last time these two teams played where they were both
ranked in the top twenty it was twenty nineteen and
that actually was a game played at Rubberna, So been
a long time coming sin since they've been able to
be the home team in a good spot and their favorite.
So up to four and a half now at a
DraftKings sportsbook. Let's get to a quick time out tracking
weather updates on the way as we roll forward again,
(17:38):
it's game dates Veterans Day, so make sure if you
haven't already, and maybe you have it. It's seven forty
five in the morning, so you probably haven't. But if
you know a veteran, make sure you let them know
and however way you can that they.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Are appreciated today.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Stick with us, We appreciate you and news Radio eight
forty whas it is a cool twenty seven degrees here
at news Radio eight forty whas a cold start to
Tuesday morning, and it'll warm up a little bit, but
how much.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Not a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
One of those days where if the sun does make
an appearance, it'll have an impact, but the temperature itself
going to be cold once again today before it warms
up later in the week. Into this weekend could be
a big week for Louisville fans. Obviously, they got a
bad taste in their mouth from Saturday's overtime loss against California,
which we're not going to do it today, but certainly
worth revisiting later on in the week. Louisville, despite that loss,
(18:30):
is still in a situation where, yes, they need some help,
but not a crazy amount and not unthinkable help.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
That could get them in the ACC Championship game.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Still again, I wouldn't say I'm expecting it, because you know,
this team could lose to anybody. They showed us that
the other night. But you've got a chance to get
the first win in a while against your rival in
basketball tonight, first win for Pat Kelcey in his Louisville
tenure against the Cats. And then you've got Clemson coming
to town on Friday. We all know how this works.
The energy and the enthusiasm on Friday night at ellen
(19:07):
And Stadium will be much better. If Louisville wins in
basketball tonight, then it will then it will not to
say that it will be a terrible atmosphere and nobody's
gonna care if the basketball team loses. But if you know,
you know, this could really give you a jolt momentum
to where you're who cares about that col loss? We
got Dabbo coming to town. We're gonna bend him over.
I mean that could just that could that could that
could be the mindset that you get from Louisville fans
(19:28):
because these sports, these these programs, they feed off each
other and it it's it's infectious, all right. If you're
looking to put your house on the market, or maybe
you're looking to purchase a home, maybe for the first time,
but you've held off.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Just because you're scared, I get it.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
The coverage of the housing market and the coverage of
the interest rates in recent months, it's been coverage that
was necessary. But that's just that that that that's one
way of looking at it. You need an expert to
help you understand the market, understand when timing is on
your and when it's not. I can tell you there's
nobody better to do that for you than Bob's Sekoler
(20:04):
with the Secolar team at Remax Properties East. He's helps
so many in the area when it comes to putting
their house on the market, getting an offer, getting the
amount that they deserved, that they wanted. He's also helped
people find themselves in their dream home, and he can
do it for you. So don't don't let the the coverage,
(20:25):
the news that's out there scare you.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Give Bob a call. He'll help you. He'll let you
know what.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
You need to know, let you know what is worthy
of of of of worrying about, and what maybe isn't.
You could take advantage of this market right now by
selling your house and potentially making some real, big time
money because of what the market is and when it
comes to maybe you find in your dream home, but
you don't want to pull the trigger or even pursue
it because you're you're you're scared of interest rates. Makes
(20:51):
total sense, but one they're heading in the right direction.
And also you you know you date the interest rate,
you marry the house. Interest rates are gonna are going
to change. You're gonna find a time down the line
where maybe you end up being being able to to
get in different mortgage with a different rate, and and
and and that happens often. So again, don't let the
coverage keep you from taking advantage of either putting your
(21:13):
house on the market or purchasing a home. Bob Sicoler
can help you. Go to We Sell Louisville dot com.
It's again Bob Sicoler and the Cecolar team at Remax
Properties Ease. You can give Bob a call directly at
Fibo two four to seven three live and he'll be
happy to take your call any time. Now. I'm not
telling you to call Bob at you know, two o'clock
in the morning, but what I mean is that don't
ever feel like you can't give him a call because
(21:34):
he's busy. He understands when he's when he's working with
you throughout this process. There's gonna be questions that come up.
There's going to be to be things that you you know,
you worry about because it's a big deal whenever you buy,
when you buy a home or sell a home. So
again he's there for you. And again the numbers five
o two three seven six live. That's Fibo two three
seven six five four eight three or check them out
online and we Sell Louisville dot com.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Let's get to a quick time out.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
We'll get caught up on the roadways take a look
at the forecast with Matt Melosa, bitch of WLKY, and
then we'll have a sports update as well right here
at news Radio eight forty whas
