Speaker 1 (00:00):
It was twenty four hours ago where I was making
my case as to why I believe that the Louisville
and Kentucky basketball rivalry is the best rivalry in college basketball.
I know that Duke and Carolina are going to probably
be mentioned from now until the end of time as
the best because of the titles they have between each other,

(00:23):
the success overall, and how competitive the rivalry has actually been.
I think rivalries are really about fans more than anything else.
And because of just how this is a game where
it's just bragging rights, right, A loss for Kentucky's not
going to hurt him. They still may go on to
be a team with a better seed than Louisville. You
just don't know. And for Louisville, obviously a loss wouldn't

(00:45):
have wouldn't have crushed them either. I mean, it would
have been crushing for fans. But again that speaks to
what I'm emphasizing, is that it's just bragging rights around
here that really is the ultimate.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Trophy, if you will.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
So, I think last night it was a step in
the direction of making it more competitive to where it
is once again mentioned as is and it's always going
It always hasn't always will be mentioned as one of
the best rivalries in college hoops, but it's certainly lost
some steam over the years. And let's be real, one
of the biggest factors, The biggest factor is that Louisville

(01:20):
just hasn't done their part. And last night I went
over Kentucky, where it was never really in doubt, it
got a little I mean, I became an absolute maniac
towards the end of the game because I just assumed, Oh,
they're doing this, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
This is happening.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
They're going to let a twenty point second half lead
slip away and they're going to do the unthinkable.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
And they didn't.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
But because of what this game does to me, that
was instantly where my mind went. And I know I'm
not alone because maybe I'm a different level of just
you know, over the top as far as what it
does to me. But we've seen how these things have
played out before, right where you think, Okay, no way,
this happens, and then you get to I think the

(02:03):
lead trim to as little as four points, and then
it gets really scary. And it was scary. And then
Louisville did just enough. Brown had a big and one
they were able to force a turnover and then they
started missing free throws. But anyways, Louisville ends up winning
the game, where it really never looked as if they
weren't the better team. It never really felt like they

(02:24):
weren't going to win, despite Kentucky making some big runs
to get it more competitive late. So it's been a
long time coming for Louisville fans, that's for sure. It's
been a long time for Kentucky fans since they felt
what it's like to lose to the rival. And maybe
you did get bored, maybe you became numb to beating
Louisville because it just became the expectation. You did it routinely.

(02:48):
I think you could win one hundred times consecutively and
you'll still be able to find enjoyment over beating your rival,
because that's just what That's just the way things work
within a rivalry. But if they were numb and kind
of checked out, I would say today they're no longer
that because you hate losing to your rival and one side,

(03:08):
both sides are feeling something they haven't experienced in a while,
and clearly one side is happy, the other not. But
Pat Kelsey, it felt like last night, and I know
I'm walking into it. Here, I'm walking into Kentucky fans
pointing their finger and saying, see, we're your super Bowl.
Whatever you want to call it. If you want to
call it a super Bowl, you can. I've never ever

(03:33):
downplayed the importance of this game when it comes to
the fans. So if that's what you want to equate
to a super Bowl, then then maybe you're right. But
Pat Kelsey brought the program back to life last year,
and it was so fun to watch that group, and
I felt as if this season being so fun and successful.

(03:58):
They went eighteen and two in the ACC coming off
of two years that I would like to never speak
of again. Those postgame shows, those were a lot of fun.
When I was on seven ninety taking calls immediately after
Kenny Payne would get blown out by Austin p leonor
Leanne Rimes that joke of an exhibition loss that he had, so,

(04:22):
I mean, it was just it was intoxicating and the
fans fed off of it, and it was just Last
season was a lot of fun. It's one that I'll
remember for a long time. But one of the elements
was unexpected success. I expected him to be better than
they were under Kenny Payne. But nobody really knew what
we had. It was all brand new, new coach, new players,
and sure enough they made it work with some special guys,

(04:44):
Chucky Hepburn being a guy that was sensational last year,
so it was so fun. I wanted to see this
team make a deep run in the tournament, but what
I thought would play out did play out. If they
lost early in the tournament. What I have the same
level of disappointment anger, because that's what happens when your

(05:05):
team loses in the NCAA tournament. It's a tough day
when it's all over, and Louisville also the first game
of the tournament, which really sucks, and I was disappointed,
bummed for those guys, but I wasn't. It wasn't anything
like what I usually feel when my team is out
of the tournament because there was really nothing that could
take away how much that was, how much I enjoyed

(05:27):
Pat Kelsey bringing the program back to life and clearly
caring about Louisville and seeing the fan attendance increase throughout
the season because these guys were winning, they were playing hard,
they fed off knowing they were bringing us back to life,
and that was awesome. This year, different world. There's real expectations.
It's a preseason top fifteen team, one of the best

(05:51):
teams in the ACC outside of Duke as far as
preseason expectations, a loaded roster, an elite freshman who certainly
showed out last night. So to have that being the
scenario in the situation right, it's not a hey, let's
see how good we can be. We're coming off the
Kenny Payne nightmare. No, this is, hey, look, you got
a really good roster, you got expectations. Let's let's let's

(06:14):
go meet those expectations. And we're far away from the
from knowing if they're going to be able to truly
do what fans hope can be done this year, like
I don't know, make a Final four. But to get
off to this start, beating your rival the way you
did Arrival, that was the number one team in the
kin Palm when that thing tipped off last night, that

(06:35):
this is a big step for Kelsey and what has
already been a very successful start to his tenure. But
we all know what it means to win this game
on both sides, and Pat Kelsey's already given some great results.
He could have lost last night and it wouldn't have
meant that. I feel as if Louisville's not in great hands.
But to feel that and know that you finally were

(06:55):
able to get one against the other guys was fun
from a little fans perspective. But I would say that
here on the other side, a Kentucky fan, not a
fun morning for you. Or maybe you know you are,
Maybe you're normal. Maybe you're not a you know, a
lunatic like some of us that just get so into it.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
And if that's the case, then good for you.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
You're living right, because I know for me what this
game does to me, it can't be normal. I don't
really know what normal is, but that can't be it.
All right, let's get to a quick time out traffic
and weather updates on the way. We also will be
talking to Rody O'Neil coming up about eight thirty five.
I'll tell us the latest on this government shutdown coming
to an end. But the airline issues good, take a

(07:37):
while for that to uh to go away, all right,
Stick around, It's News Radio eight forty whas I've yet
to uh to fly with the government shutdown I don't
intend to, and the government shutdown seemingly is coming to
an end, but I've yet to.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
I haven't been in the situation that I'm sure many
of you have been in where you are traveling and
you always have that unknown about what you're gonna get.
When it comes to the experience with traveling via airline,
you just you just show up and hope everything works
out because all of it is out of your control.
You could have a canceled flight, a delayed flight, and
you just got to deal with it. I've always said

(08:13):
that the airport is one of the most helpless places
one can be. But now with the government shutdown and
the reduction of flights even being available and of course
more cancelations, uh, it's it's even more. It's even more
of an unknown. But right now, what they're telling you
to do is if you have a flight delay or
a flight cancelation due to this government shutdown, here's the

(08:36):
here's the process that they recommend move fast to rebook
lightning fast because others are doing the same thing, and
as soon as you know, you got to get working
on getting something rebooked. Use the airlines app rather than
any other any other that'll be the quickest way to
do it. Even even if you're there at the airline,
you will be quicker.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
It'll be quicker for you to use.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
The app if you can then get in line, which
I think that's a no brainer, but I'm sure some
would just assume, well, i'm here, let me just talk
to somebody, and I get it if that's what your
preference is. But again, the quickest way maybe to just
get the app out and see what's available and go
from there. Also, if you call the airline while you wait,
it doesn't you know, So if the app doesn't have

(09:20):
good options, you can call the airline, but just know
that there's clearly a weight there and that's going to
be It doesn't sound like they're telling you you won't
get through, But if the app doesn't have good options,
it sounds more so than anything that that's just the
options and that's what you have to deal with, because
I guess they have a number for you to call,
But the bandwidth that they have at these airlines right now,

(09:44):
and I'm not sure what their impact is overall when
it comes to the shutdown itself.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
But still.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
They're not built to every day handle the amount of
calls they're getting now with this shut down, with people's
flights getting canceled. So that's why it's so important to
just stay on top of it. Check every moment you get,
and then as soon as you see there has been
unfortunately a change, to try to rebook. Easier said than done.

(10:12):
It's really just, I guess, more than anything, some luck involved.
But they also say be flexible about when to fly.
It's easy for you to say we'll be flexible, Well,
I got to be here at this time.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
I can't be flexible.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
So also it says the time to book a flight
that rarely has issues, including even during the government shutdown,
is six am flights. Flights within the six am hour
seem to be your better bet, all right. I can
tell you when it comes to buying or selling your home,
your best bet is to reach out to my friend
Bob's Secola and his team at the Secolar Remax Properties East.

(10:47):
Bob's been doing this a long long time. He's been
helping people get into their dream home. He's been helping
people put their house on the market, get it sold
quickly for the price they're asking for, sometimes even more
than asking price because it becomes a bidding war. There's
a lot of steps within the process of buying and
selling a home that a lot of people think they

(11:09):
could just do without, without the without the expert, or
maybe they cannot even really be mindful about who they
trust when it comes to a realtor. And you could
do that if you want, but I would encourage you
not to because those who have gone through the process
with Bob and his team, the next time they're in
a situation or the next time somebody they know is
in a situation where they're buying or selling a home,

(11:30):
there's no hesitation, uh to let people know how the
great experience was with Bob and its team. That's how
you end up with the amount of five star reviews
they have and the great reputation that the Cecolar team has.
So there is a process that they follow precisely when
it comes to marketing your home to the right clients,
to the right people looking that will make the offer

(11:53):
and get you what you deserve, get you what you
need when it comes to putting your house on the market.
So right now the interest rates are are improving, but
that's still a concern. Obviously, there's a lot of concerns
when it comes to just the the coverage of the market,
but don't let that keep you from potentially buying or
selling a home. Bob can answer the questions, let you
know what's important, and help you throughout this process. So go,

(12:13):
Do we sell Louisville dot com to get more info? Again,
that's we sell Louisville dot com. All right, quick time out,
stick around right here News Radio eight forty whas just
a few minutes left for us before we hand it
off to Tony and Dwight. They are on the road today.
They're going to be out at I believe they're at

(12:34):
They are in carriage, okay, carriage for you.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
I knew they were going to be on the road.
I couldn't remember where it was. But they're going to
be a carriage for it.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
So they'll be out there hanging out with Marty Book
and enjoying themselves. And my fellow Cowboys fan, Marty Book.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
I miss sello Hoosier's fan, Marty Book.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Yes he's a big time Hoosier fan. But right before
we came back from Bray, mister Alden, now we're reminiscing,
or at least I was about our time together on
seven ninety because a couple of years ago, the converse
about Louis of basketball were much different. I mean, it's
it really doesn't seem real that that era happened, and

(13:08):
I'm the last thing I'm trying to do is take
us back down a path of of reliving something that
was a traumatic experience for a lot of louisvill basketball fans.
But uh wow, it's a lot different today. You you
wake up as a Louis a fan getting your first
win against the rival in a long time, and your
team was just better if they played ten times. Who
knows how many wins are going to go this way

(13:30):
or that way, but they were ready to play. They
had the best talent on the floor with Mickel Brown junior.
And there's a reason you go get a guy that's
that talented because he's he's he's just that special.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
So I I know it's.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Not normal, and I I I can't really put it
into words if you don't, if you don't, like I'm
talking to two guys that are that are not in
the rivalry, John Shannon and John Alden.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
There is your sky a little bluer today, Nick Yes,
is your son a little Brian or a little more
bo I know it's a little more bounds of your stiff.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
So it's clear that it is.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
And I'm happy and I know that like this, this
rivalry is different and it and it brings out the
craziness that we have for college basketball. But it still
shouldn't be this way, like.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
I I should.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
I don't know you remember it, but but but but
I feel like I'm not truly laying it out how
crazy and how how nuts I am for this rivalry
in this game, for win or lose, Like it still
shouldn't give me either the the pain that it does
on a loss or the joy that it doesn't a win.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
But I guess that's just sports.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
I mean, I was texting Tony Venetti last night like
a like a madman, and he was texting me right back,
just meeting meeting me at that same level of mad man.
We were mad men together.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Tommy, Yes, yes we were.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
And I just was It's been so long and I've
seen Kentucky do that to us so many times to
where we you know, we weren't aggressive and they punked
us and pushed just around and dunked on us.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
And hitting crazy threes.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
And seventeen assists on twenty three baskets, and you're just like,
what is going And then one of their players would
go ten for ten for thirty six points. Well, it
was totally flipped. From what I understand, it was almost
one hundred percent Louisville fans in the lower bowl, which
is basically the arena, and so it wasn't that the
Blue got in a ton. They got up in the

(15:24):
upper decks. But you and I were towards the end,
Oh yeah, we started to see because I'm screaming what's
gonna happen? I was like, if they hit some stupid
threes and we start missing free throws, I'm gonna throw
this beer bottle through the TV.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
I told my wife I wanted to turn it off
and go to bed. That's where I was.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
Yeah, you know, you know, from an outside observer, if
I didn't know any better about this, you would think
it had been twenty years since so cards would be kentucking,
not just twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
Well, I'm glad you said that, because Venetti said it
had been so long, and I've said that many times
this morning, and a lot of people have.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
But I think what he means is that.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yes, they won in twenty twenty, they got one in
twenty seventeen, but last night it was the way they
did it.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
They were the ones dunking on their head. They would remember.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
They were the ones that bucket that Ryan Conwell got
late where he just physically put his body on low
and scored. I mean, yes, we don't do that kind
of stuff in this game, at least we haven't in
a long time. So that's why it feels different than
twenty seventeen and twenty twenty because Louisville was just the aggressor,
the better team, and it really was never totally in doubt.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
And again I can't remember last time that happened.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
Well, it was in the passing with the Louisville passing
the ball looked like the varsity in Kentucky looked like
the JV lost.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Yep, they came ready to play, they executed, They were
the aggressor. You could tell it was a game that
everybody on the floor, everybody on the bench, they knew
what was at stake. And man, it's the difference that
you feel when you win and when you lose is unbelievable.
But it's nice to be on the good side out
of it, that's for sure, all right. Have fun, have
fun out there with Marty. Okay okay. We'll back tomorrow

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
