Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the season, right, We're getting ready for college
basketball tournament play where I got some going on this week.
The women's tournaments are coming up this week as well.
Jim Ryan's joining us for ABC News because it's not
just a big weekend for these tournaments and the upcoming
week is. But it's a big, big time for gaming,
(00:20):
especially now that we have what thirty seven or thirty
eight states that now have gaming right.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, and I hate to throw a wet blanket over
the whole thing. Yeah, but this solves besides being March Madness,
the National Council on Problem Gambling recognized this is Problem
Gambling Awareness Month, and it's not a coincidence because so
many billions and billions of dollars are gambled on the
you know, on the March Madness, the Final Four. So yeah,
(00:49):
we can expect that to intensify and startling studies here
about the years since states were able to legalize sports
betting back in twenty eighteen, twenty three percent surge in
online search is for gambling related help another where its
people are reaching out. They're realizing that they have an
issue and are trying to find help for their suspected
(01:12):
gambling addictions.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, indeed, I was trying to look that up in Kentucky.
And of course we just started recently having this what'
two or three years ago, But Spectrum News had something
from back on January fourth of last year and back
as early as September seventh and twenty three. That was
when the first legal bets went around, And by September
(01:38):
there was one hundred and twelve increase in September to
two hundred and eleven percent in October of people calling
or yeah, people calling because they had problem gambling.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, well, and there are some things to recognize and
this Problem Gambling Association National Council on Problem Gambling Issues.
They sort of pocket guide for physicians to question to
do screening on their patients who might have an issue.
The three simple questions during the past twelve months, have
you become restless, irritable, or anxious when trying to stop
(02:12):
or cut down on gambling? Two during the past twelve months,
have you tried to keep your family or friends from
knowing how much you gambled? And three during the past
twelve months, did you have such financial trouble as a
result of your gambling that you had to get help
with living expenses. Answering yes to any of those three
according to the National Council and problem gambling indicates a problem.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Wow, yeah, you can apply that number of things.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
You know. Yeah, and it is. It's a template for
all sorts of addictions. You know, if you if it's
given you a financial trouble, if it's causing you anxiety
to try to quit, are you hiding it from friends
or family? Yeah, it can indicate all sorts of things,
not just gambling.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
You know. The biggest thing now, I think and a
lot of young guys we hear. I think it's old
guys too. I get addicted on these prop bets. They're
just too good to be true, you know. You know,
you get the maybe two or three links of the
prop bet, and then you know, just that fourth game,
whatever the case may be. And that's where a lot
(03:14):
of these gaming companies make all their money or a
lot of their money.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Well right, yeah, and now you have it. It's as
convenient as opening up an app on your phone and
there you find your ability to wager some amount on
some event or some sports you know, some game or
some aspect of the game. But that's it's apparently causing
some issues. There's a surprised to see this statistic about
(03:38):
three and one hundred people have gambling problems. So three
percent of folks out there who are wagering on Kentucky
or whatever they're wagering on this final, this March Madness
have an issue with that.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I wonder how many regular gaming guys we have in
ladies too, But really, it seems like young men are
really involved in this the most right now.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I'm sure it's a huge number. I mean, and I
don't know if anybody's able to even quantify it. But
you know, I remember in college even then, the whole
fraternity house was one big essentially a casito of people
gambling on March Madness.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Well, respectfully, you went to SMU, that is no, I'm
just kidding you. Let's give you a hard time. Go on,
you know, do that.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah, we didn't to pay much attention to basketball.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
That Yeah, but man, the Phonies were really good though. Yeah,
and they were good again. Uh, good for you guys.
You know. I was reading also, there was a little
story from a marketplace a couple of years ago. Diana
Good is her name, The head of the Connecticut Council
on Problem Gambling. She said, in order to gamble, you
had to put clothes on. She went on to say,
(04:49):
you had to get up, you had to go out,
and now you don't. I mean that there's a lot
of truth to that. And you know as well as
I do. If you play Solitaire on your phone, sometimes
you can get just addicted doing that, I mean, you know, or.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Whatever, yeah, right, well, or any game where it's with
friends or whatever it might be. I love words with friends,
but I'm not addicted to it, I hope not. I've
never tried to hide my plating from flaying from somebody,
you know.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Right, I mean, well, I think pone addiction is a
part of this maybe as well, and it gets as
maybe deeper and deeper. It's really hard to quantify because
we're so really new to this whole experience right now,
right with having you know, your ability to gamble right
there in your pocket.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Right well, I mean, in twenty seventeen, you had one
state that allowed online gambling. Now it's sore to thirty
eight states. The wagers rose in twenty seventeen from four
point nine billion to one hundred and twenty one billion
dollars in twenty twenty three on online gambling.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Wow, that's amazing. Yeah, Jim, I appreciate your time and
good luck to your Mustangs. Thanks Tony all right, and
Kelvin Sampson. He can beat Duke. I don't know if
anybody can beat Auburn, but Kelvin can get that done
for the Houston Cougar. So we'll see how it goes
in the NCAA tournament. That's Jim Ryan joining us. Thanks
so much, Jim. ABC News here on Kentucky and This
