Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're waking up with fifth in the morning, hun kiss
one O seven one, Hi, good morning. We're gonna take
a break from Liam Payne, etc. Just know that you
have a space here on the show at any point
that you want it. I have your chance to win
Dame Cook tickets. He's coming at the end of this month,
but you'll need the keyword. I think we'll go with
interview today. Every Thursday right around this time. Julie on

(00:20):
the Job is our show's career expert. Whether you're in
college and getting ready to graduate and not sure what's
going on, maybe you are desperately looking for a job
or you want to upgrade, you can always ask her
on the show. So we'll start with this question that
I got. Hi, Julie, I have a job interview, and
this will be my tenth in a few months. I
don't know if it's just me or maybe I'm not

(00:41):
right for the job. Can you help me? Or can
you Julie? Can you help us?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Interviewing or looking for a job, there's an awful lot
of trial and error kissing frogs that goes on, and
both sides of the desk, you and the employer are
trying to decide whether this is a great fit for you,
and so for an offer or interviews to continue, it
needs to be a yes on both sides.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
One of the things that people complain about, like people
who are in decision making roles, complain about, is that
interviewees show up and they aren't prepared. And what do
I mean by yeah, yes, okay, See, I know it's
so basic, So what do I mean by prepared? There's
a couple pieces of it. The first piece is are

(01:26):
you ready to talk about your experiences, your skills, the
things that you're looking for in a next role. Do
you know the product? And in this case, the product
is you, and so you have to be ready to
talk about yourself. The other side of that, and this
is the piece that's most often missed, again surprisingly, is

(01:46):
that you need to show up having a level of
understanding and knowledge about the company, what they do, what
their key priorities are, and what the job, what the
what the why they're trying to fill this role, what's
what are the key responsibilities of this position. The good thing,
the good news is this information is all readily accessible.

(02:09):
You can research the company, you can know everything you
need to know about them just with a few minutes online,
and that is a bare minimum preparation, but it's sound.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
What I just pulled from that, though, is you are
learning about the company, You're learning about yourself and how
you marry the two of them together. Yes, yes, And
being able to speak to that confidently is what separates
you from the other candidates.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
If you just take the question and work to answer
it before your interview, why do I believe I'm a
great fit for this role? Start with that, why do
I believe I'm a great fit for this role? Because
both of those elements are in there. Who am I?
And what's the role require? If you can't answer that question,
you shouldn't be going on the interview.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
So for the person that's asking the interview question, do
you think it's them or do you think they're just
not right for the job.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
It's gonna It's hard to say, but ten interviews feel
like a lot. Yeah. But you know, I also think
that interviewing, or I know that interviewing is something that
you get better at with practice. And so every time
you do an interview, do a self assessment afterwards, ask
for feedback. You probably won't get it, but at least,

(03:16):
you've got to stay up at the plate swinging and
keep practicing. Yeah, it's really is a numbers game.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
What is your one Julie on the Job tip. You've
interviewed a million people. What are you looking for? What's
the secret sauce for you?

Speaker 2 (03:31):
So the one tip I'd give people is take a
look at what you bring to the party, what the
organization's looking for, and write down what are my top
three ways in which my skills and experience could be
an answer to their problem.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Okay, ask Julie on the Job is a great way
to reach her or follow her for some of the
career content that you might need. And we're going to
get you this job. We're gonna get this poor girl
her job.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
You'll need the keyword interview for your chance to win
the Dane Cook tickets coming up next
