(00:00):
Hi, I'm Sylvia Moss and thisis Insight, a presentation of iHeartMedia where
we really do care about our localcommunities and all our listeners who live here.
Listen. I want to picture this. Say you're having a dream.
You're in a huge building walking aroundand at every turn you have the opportunity
things like all kinds of cakes andpies. Oh my goodness, strawberry crunch,
(00:23):
banana putting brownies, Oh my god, candy grapes, marsh willow whip,
caramel, popcorn, funnel cakes thatare lower with all kinds of topics,
and even fright snickers. Sounds wonderful. Actually, my friends, this
isn't a dream. It's a fantasticevent which is going to happen at the
farm Show Complex on Saturday, Julytwenty second, and you are all invited.
(00:45):
The best part of about the HarrisburgDessert Festival is that all the proceeds
go to benefit the Bethesta Mission.I know you're trying to find out more,
so let me begin by introducing YouTubesee Cecilia or CCS. She knows
CC Davis. She's the owner ofCC's Cake Chap and the creator of the
Harrisburg Dessert Festival and the wonderful CindyMallow, the development director for the Bethesia
(01:07):
Mission. This is awesome, Thisis really awesome. Let's begin with you,
my dear Cec. This is thesecond year for this event, right,
yes, tell me how you cameup with this whole idea? Where
did this come from? So itwas actually on a whim after an event
that we had where I was justfending as a pop up vendor selling some
cakes, cupcakes, things like that, and I came home talked to my
(01:29):
husband about how nice it was toconnect with like minded individuals who were also
selling similar things so they understood thestruggles. And so it was actually his
idea. He was like, whatif there was some sort of local event
that offered nothing but you know, things like what you sell? Yeah,
And when he said it, Idon't know that he fully registered it as
a solid idea. It was justsort of a shooting the breeze, and
(01:51):
I was like, oh my gosh, what if there was So we got
notebook some paper and just jotted downsome ideas and it was literally from there.
How successful were you the first year? The first year, I was
shocked. We didn't know what toexpect, but we landed just over fifteen
hundred guests. Wow, yeah,it was pretty awesome. It was pretty
awesome. Well, you know you'realso involved. It's not just the Bethesda
(02:14):
Missian Mission. You're a community mindedperson. You're involved with other nonprofits,
aren't you? Or you have beenin the past. Yes, Primarily recently
it's been the Bethesda Mission Food Bank, but um, the als Walk,
right if I've been a part ofthat. There was also the Alzheimer's They
had a bake sale or they hadan opportunity for you to vend an all
(02:35):
places go to Alzheimer Research and justlittle here and there is as I can
find ways to support. I tryto. Well, I gotta tell you,
this is a beautiful young lady andshe's got four kids. Four kids.
You run a business, your ownbusiness, What are you crazy?
A little bit? You know? The thing is she's only in her early
thirties. And that's the answer.Wait waited a couple of years old,
(02:57):
Sep. Well talk, but howdo you balance that? How do you
do it? I wish I hada solid answer for that. I don't
think there's really a set way tobalance it. You just take it one
day at a time. Whatever youhave time for in that day is what
gets done. Is that why youthink this that whole idea with the Harrisburg
Dessert Fest, It's for the wholefamily, right yeah, And that's that's
(03:21):
I'm sure that influence is what you'redoing too, because you know, as
a mother, there are so manyneeds out there for families, right,
Yeah. Absolutely, you are notjust somebody who decide, oh, I'm
gonna bake a cake. You lovequite a background. You went to a
culinary institute, so you've got allkinds of things going on, right yeah.
Yeah, and that was completely online, so that made it a little
(03:42):
bit. I was gonna say, yeah, yeah, And I want to
mention something else you've just added tothat. Someone told me about you just
added to your bake shop. Whereis your bake shop? So I actually
bake out of my home? Right, That's wonderful. That's wonderful. Well,
as I mentioned the Bethesda mission, and I can't magine Cindy Cindy Malt,
she is the development director for Bethesda, and she's been here a couple
(04:04):
times before, and I'm amazed athow much the Bethesda mission has grown over
the years. I mean, itstarted out even Cindy, and we're talking
earlier, and we agreed that thereare still people out there just to think
the Bethesda Mission is a place forhomeless men. Boy, they got to
you gotta educate him, Cindy, because that is certainly grown. Talk to
(04:26):
us about it. Okay, Sothat's exactly right what you said. When
people hear the name Bethesda Mission, they think, oh, they have that
men's children down down on Riley Street, and absolutely we do. And our
goal is to help men there andspecifically men who are struggling with addiction,
and we want them to have alife change before they go back out to
(04:47):
their families. Um, we don'twant them being back on the street again.
So but in addition to that,we have a women's shelter where we're
reaching women and their children and wecan have we have a beautiful building that
houses up to fifty one women andtheir children. And but you're not going
to building down in a little bit, right, Yeah, Well that's we
also have a community center. Wehave a back after school program there and
(05:10):
a summer program that's running right now, and we're in the process of knocking
down the old Shamrock firehouse, andwe wanted to try to renovate it,
but we're ain't able to do that. So we are going to be knocking
that down in the next week ortwo, and we're building an entirely new
two story structure to help us reachkids and teens and their families. We
(05:32):
already have a full sized gymnasium rightnext door, so those two buildings will
be connected together and we'll be ableto double or triple the number of kids
and teens that we're able to reachand along with their family. So there'll
be a beautiful kitchen there to helpyou teach the kids cooking classes and things
like that, and also a communityroom where we can hold family events.
(05:53):
You know, Cindy and I werealso talking earlier, and it really surprises
me when people who are doing thingsfor the community community here and the general
public, I still think they justthey still don't get it. All these
things we hear about, all theseterrible things that we hear about going on
in the world, they have beenright here in central Pennsylvania're right, exactly,
(06:13):
Yeah, And there are a lotof people on the streets in Harrisburg,
and for whatever reason, the menand the women that are out there.
They don't want to come into ourshelters, and there's a lot of
reasons for that, but we facea lot of mental illness and we see
that, and so they're not ableto follow the rules that we have to
have in our shelters, so theydon't want to come in. They'd much
(06:35):
rather just stay on the street. So what we'll do in a situation with
that like that is we'll just takeour mobile Mission van and that goes down
into the streets of Harrisburg on theweekends and we will take our services to
them. Thank God you're there, talk to them and pray with them,
give them what they need, andtry to convince them to come in.
But some do, but many won't. See see why did you just side
(06:57):
down? The Pathetica Mission have afundraiser for them? Why them? Originally
we knew that we wanted to tiesome sort of a charity to our event,
and it made sense before I wasintroduced to Cindy that because our event
is somewhat food related, we wantedto connect with something to help those in
need who are struggling with food. And so we did a little bit of
research and came across the THOSDA Missionand looking through their website, working with
(07:21):
Cindy, it just it makes somuch sense because it's just such a great
organization and she's exactly right, there'sso much more to offer, and even
us sort of putting this out thereas specific to the food bank, you
know, that may prompt some todo a little bit of research and see
what else they have to offer andeven involve themselves, and it's just it's
it's a beautiful spiral that we're apart of. Cindy, tell me about
(07:43):
this. The proceeds are going towardsa food bank, and you're not a
part of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bankor have. We sometimes purchase food from
the Pennsylvania Food Bank, but wehave our own food bank that we formed
a number of years ago. Andknow that you can imagine then the amount
of poundage of food that we gothrough in not only a day, but
(08:05):
a month's time, and that takesa lot of coordination and efforts, and
our food bank is the arm ofour organization that does that. So we
rent a warehouse space in Mechanicsburg fromMission Central and we have two staff members
there and they form partnerships with othercompanies that may have an excess of food
(08:28):
and just have extra that they candonate to us. They also form partnerships
with other organizations like Convoy of Hopeand larger organizations that are more nationwide,
and we're able to trade food itemswith them. They might bring us an
entire tractor trailer load of maybe bottledwater, and we can give them other,
(08:48):
you know, food or drink itemsin exchange for that. So those
partnerships go a long way. Andyou know, we have up to one
hundred men staying and our shelter,we have, you know, twenty five
to fifty women and our our womenshelter, and that takes a lot of
food. So they are the mainplace that we get our food from.
So that's a really important part ofwhat we do. And in addition to
(09:11):
supporting our shelters, they're also ableto pack food bags. They pack thousands
of food bags every month that getsdistributed to our church partners and they go
out to needy families in the region. And there have been a lot more
families that have needed our help becauseof a decrease in the amount of EBT
cards that have been done out thelimits have gone way down, and so
(09:33):
we've seen a lot more people thatare in need. What's with that,
I've heard I heard people people thatI know that use those cards. And
somebody said they got thirty five dollars, and it was an older woman and
she said, I can't do anythingwith thirty five dollars. So she said,
I don't want to do any more. Give it to these families.
She said, they are families outthere and needed more. Yeah. I
(09:54):
think that the amounts that they weregetting were increased during COVID exactly, and
now that that's over, the amountsare being pulled back again. And you
know, with being in a socalled recession or with inflation happening right now,
food is so much more expensive, you know, and we're seeing that
in our pockets. I'm personally seeingthat. I'm sure you guys are too.
(10:16):
So it's just been a struggle andfamilies are hurting, and more people
need help than ever. Would youplease, as I said a little bit
earlier, excuse me tell people allthe things that we hear and we talk
about. We see it on TV. We see the violence, the domestic
violence, the drug and alcohol abuse, sexually abused children, homelessness, so
(10:41):
many things. It's going on hereat home, isn't it right here in
Central Pennsylvania Harrisburg? Yeah? Yes, your proof of it. I mean,
you deal with this for long, for many years, every single day,
right, how do we get itthrough? And I can't say enough
about the generosity of people in CentralPennsylvania. They step right up to it.
But sometimes I think people still havethat same well, well they'll get
(11:05):
help somewhere, they'll be fine. They don't exist. A lot of people
that I talked to at other nonprofitsare struggling in the same areas. But
the'st amission and I say this tothem blue in the face, but we
don't accept any government funding. Alot of organizations depend on that. It's
up to a third or maybe evenup to a half of their income.
(11:26):
Well, we don't have that,so we rely on the community to help
support us. So that includes businesses, churches, are individual donors and so
that's why it's so important. Andwe are just helping out people right in
our own backyards. That's exactly right, and it does exist. That's the
big thing I think we want toget across. Miss CC your event,
tell us when it is, what'sgoing on take it. So it'll be
(11:50):
Saturday, July twenty second, fromeleven to five pm. It's going to
be held in the Northwest Hall ofthe Farm Show and it is literally a
full day celebrating all things deserts, sugar. We have a bubble show,
we have a kick decorating competition, and we have tons of dessert and dessert
themed vendors. There is a minibubble gum blowing competition you can have with
(12:11):
friends and family surrounded by a threesixty photo booth. There's a duet yourself
sugar scrub next to one of oursponsors who actually does waxing made with organic
sugar, and just anything we couldthink of that involves desserts and sugar,
we threw it in there. Ohyeah, I know diabetics stay away,
right, But this you mentioned someof the things and some of the things
(12:35):
that I thought about, or likeyou mentioned the face painting and all kinds
of game. What is the chocolatefactory area? Is that all chocolate?
So we originally had a theme thatwe were going for Willy Wonka the entire
event, and as awesome as itwas, we actually received a phone call
(12:56):
directly from Warner brothers advise us toseason assist from that theme because it's copy
written and even having characters in costumerelated to that theme any name, no
idea. That's just why I getto make people that big but that much
money, and this is an event. Why should they be afraid of that.
(13:18):
Well, at the same time, maybe that's a good thing, because
maybe they saw what this could havebeen, or they saw potential in it
to the point where they needed toput a hold on it. I'm not
sure, but you really can't copyrightevents, can you. You you can
do it, but you have to. It's like it's like McDonald started out,
but Wendy's came along and made didthat same idea made a little bit
(13:41):
different? Yeah yeah, let themhave it. Yeah yeah. So we
we went back to the original theme. So some of the things that we
originally had listed we had to kindof make an edit force. So now
it's just generically desserts and sugar andyou know we have okay, yeah,
yeah, we'll make it work. We'll make it work. You also have
costume characters running around we did intwenty twenty two. Because of that,
(14:03):
we took away. Originally we weregonna have Willy Wonker actually open the doors
and things like that, so wetook it away. But yeah, yeah,
what's this cake decorating competition? Sothis will be our second year,
So it's actually amateur, professional andkid cake decorators. They're actually testing their
skills at home, bringing in theirfinished cakes, and the public is going
(14:24):
to vote on a fan favorite. But we're also having judges this year and
actually have them panel out their preferencesfor a second and third place, and
first place in each category wins agift card. Oh, I think that's
wonderful. Also, I want totalk about I mentioned just some of them.
Talk to me about some of yourvendors and I know, yeah,
how many jetties yet? Two fortytwo vendors and please forgive us if we
(14:46):
don't mention your name, but ifI'm asking off the top of your head,
what kind of what are some ofthe more the products that they're going
to be offering to the public forthis So a little bit of everything.
I'm excited about funnel cake this year. We didn't have that last year.
We have three different types of icecream. We have soft served, solid
rolled ice cream, there's um milkshakes, we have tons of different cakes,
(15:09):
cupcakes, pies, cookies, allthe baked goods, all the things.
We have a gentleman that makes umchocolate, fresh chocolate. We also have
an individual that makes fresh fudge. We have so many things, and I
absolutely your favorite. Are you chocolategirl? I know? I mean me
chocolate. What woman doesn't like chocolate. That's what we live for. Chocolate
(15:31):
and pot chips pretty much. It'sprobably not the best, but my favorite
is the fried stuff. Um.I am really looking forward to the fried
Snickers Snickers, Yeah, the friedcandy bars. I have no idea.
I didn't even know it's something likethat existed, but it's gonna be there
too, and I'm all for it. Your children are coming, yes?
(15:52):
Oh? Spinning around the block fora month? Yeah? Yeah, Oh
my god. What does it taketo put something like this together? The
planning and everything. You must start, like a lot of these big events,
you must start like the next dayafter it's over, to time for
next year. Yeah. A lotof the time, at least to secure
the date for the following year.I have that lined up the day of
(16:15):
the current year's event, just sowe can sort of pre advertise that day,
you know. Mark your calendars forthe next year or whatever day.
Apart from that, it does.I typically start about six months in advance,
and that's you know, getting thefloor plan together, opening the door
for vendors to apply. Those inthe kick decorating competition, interested in anyone
interested in sponsorship, laying out youknow. Okay, so this is what
(16:37):
we did this year, This iswhat we did last year. What are
we going to do next year tomake it a little bit different, more
enticing? How was the cost? What are we you know? And nine
of this I've been working on asan individual, but every now and again
I do collab with some friends, some local business owners and just lay out
everything I have and I'm like, does this make sense? Is this something
you would go to? Yeah?Would you add to this? You know,
(17:00):
because it's just you don't know whatyou don't know? You know?
So is there a fee to getin? Yes, so it's eight dollars
for age is thirteen and up andage is twelve and under this year completely
free. You know what that killsme? Eight bucks? You can't go
out and buy a bag of HersheyKisses for list in five or six bucks.
This is true. I mean, you've got all that stuff, and
you can you take can you buystuff to take home with you? Absolutely?
(17:25):
And guess what else? I beta lot of that stuff. If
you don't need that now you canfreeze it. Oh you sure could.
Oh my gosh, I love this. Let me ask both of you ladies.
I'll start with you, Cindy.Right now, you're constantly going at
the bethesta mission, so many thingsgoing on. What do you need?
Oh boy? Um? We canalways use food. We're actually because of
(17:47):
the what I mentioned earlier about thecut in the EB two cards, right,
we are having a summer food drivejust to help collect some canned food
to put in those food bags toget out to people. So that's a
need, and so do they dropit off. They can drop it off
at our men's shelter. It's sixto eleven Riley Street, and just tell
whoever is there that it's for thesummer food drive, and it's can't you
(18:08):
want can stuff? And you canyou can't? Okay, okay. The
other thing that we really could useor just financial donations, not only for
just general things like food, butalso for the community center. As I
mentioned, we just started a capitalcampaign to build that entirely new building where
the firehouse is now. So that'sgoing to be a couple million dollar project
(18:30):
and it's going to just be agreat blessing to the kids that are in
the Hearse Street community and their parentsas well. And you know, we
were talking before we got in ourbecause I love to talk to my guests
before we start, and Cindy wastelling me. I said about how it
went from a place that years agothat people thought of a place for men
who damn place to go, andwe're down and out and now it's gotten
(18:52):
so big and it's a lot ofthe same issues, but the needs for
children have gone up. You've gottenso many more kids, and that's why
this community center has, I mean, it's grown by leaps and bounds because
it's showing us kids need a placeto go. They don't need to be
out in the street. That's wherethe trouble starts, right exactly exactly.
And the family, the traditional familyhas really changed kind of yeah, changed
(19:15):
and kind of died off a lotin the area and many areas actually,
But so the community center is ouranswer to that. And we're not only
reaching their kids and teens, we'realso reaching out to their their families.
A lot of those kids are beingraised by one parent or even grandparents,
and they need a lot of support. So that's what we're here for.
(19:36):
There's second and third grade students thatdon't know how to read, don't know
how to write, don't know howto add two plus two, and we're
able to help them with that withour after school program. And as you
mentioned about grandparents, you're absolutely rightbecause the pandemic. I've had people in
here, grandmothers who are raising theirchildren because and a lot of times these
kids aren't their their children aren't kidsthat are drunk, what we call druggies.
(20:00):
The one lady's daughter was in anaccident and she was given an opioida
and she became addicted to it.A car accident, Yeah, and she
odeed. And now this woman who'sin her sixties, late sixties is raising
her I think at that time thebaby was like eighteen months old. It
was a year or two ago.And you find even the state of Pennsylvania
has a tax benefit for grandparents whoare raising grandchildren because of the opioid epidemic.
(20:26):
But it's all crept into society allthe way around us, and we
everybody. Every time you turn around, somebody needs help doing something right.
And the community center is kind ofour answer to that. You know,
we see men and women that arestruggling with addiction every day coming into our
shelters, and our community center isour ancient answer to prevention. We want
to prevent those kids fermending up inourselves. That's right because in a lot
(20:49):
of cases, and you'll find outin many cases, the behavior is it's
repeated, it's a generational fact.So get them away, not get them
away from their folks, get theirfolks help, but work on these kids,
give them hope about themselves. Andexactly what about you, my dear,
do you need anything at this point? Do you have room? We're
like a week or two out.You need more vendors? Do you need
(21:12):
more sponsors? And where that youhave some pretty decent sponsors too, Do
you need volunteers? So at thistime, the biggest thing that I would
say we could use is definitely communitysupport because the event itself is going to
be a lot of fun for alot of friends and family, but attending
both buying a ticket as well aswe also have a dollar raffle. All
(21:32):
proceeds are going to path as anemission. So just having that attendance is
helping to make a difference in thecommunity, and I think that that's huge.
Let me ask you this one, who's going to clean all that up
after it's over? And is therea place where I can go pee?
Yes? Thankfully, You've got tobe honest about a kilt, and yeah,
thankfully there are. We have ourown restaurants inside, not quart potties
(21:53):
regular Oh my god, yeah, doing a pig yeah yeah, and um
and I low key will be theone to clean up afterwards. So we
do have we need some volunteers. We do have a few volunteers staying after
school will make it work. Okay, okay, Well, another thing that
I wanted to talk to you aboutis your website. How can you get
(22:17):
more information about it? So moreinformations on Harrisburg Dessert Festival dot com.
Okay, and then we are alsoon Instagram Harrisburg Dessert Festival. One other
thing that it's not going to workwithout your program, and you know that
or your sponsors still be a sponsor, Yes, there is, yes,
there is. There's unfortunately no wayto become a vendor in terms of that
but you can absolutely help support andwe can certainly boost your businesses. And
(22:40):
I promise you your sponsors are notgoing to get angry with you if you
forget some of them. But talkto me about some of them. Yeah,
some really good ones. Yeah yeah. And I'm so I'm so thankful
for our sponsors. So we havea few that are also attending as a
vendor. For example, our LunarCreations. They make beautiful balloon art and
so they are attending as a vendorbut also creating balloon art for the event
(23:00):
itself. So we have a giantballoon cake on the way, um balloon,
ice cream, balloon, no shake, and it's all made by even
I'm so excited. I'm so excited. Oh my gosh, who else is
gonna be this? So we alsohave CNJ Catering. They're gonna be our
savory food vendor. You work forthem at one, didn't you work for
them? That's why I'm saying, because you went to a fancy frenchy you
(23:21):
know, culinary college and it wasit in Colorado. And now well the
school was yes, you like, okay, you did the school, that's
right, the school. It's becauseyou did it online. Yeah yeah,
but you you earned the place todo what you're doing today. You kick
butt. I appreciate. Yeah.Yeah, yeah, so go ahead.
I'm sorry we're telling me about yoursponsors. No, no, that's okay.
(23:41):
Yeah. So CNJ Catering, they'regonna have our savory food and everyone
else is going to have the sugarystuff. So they're gonna be the ones
to break up all the sugar.Oh there's our salt. Yeah, exactly.
Now you can be the ice creamand the fry. That's how it
goes. UM. We also havepatient First, we have visit Hershey Harrisburg.
We have Sugaring nyc Are Organic waxvendor. There'll be present at the
(24:03):
event giving out samples of the sugaringwax. So that'll be exciting. UM.
We have Simple Dimple Customs. Wehave my personal Trainer actually, um
jec and Associates. It's a wellnesscompany that does group and personal fitness.
Um Our Raffle prizes are coming fromWah Wah, Coca Cola Sports Emporium,
Temple University, Chick fil A,Longwood Gardens. UM we have Elite Fitness.
(24:27):
UM. Of course CC's Cake Shop. We have an online company called
Let's Roam. They actually do theselive scavenger hunts in the middle of the
cities where you can walk around differentblocks and find different things. Um yeah,
yeah, And I love that thisthis event is giving every single one
of those businesses additional exposure. Anda lot of them are local business Most
(24:47):
of them are local businesses, sothey're getting a chance to grill their businesses.
Right, absolutely, right. Andanother thing that I that I found
out is there are a lot ofthings maybe maybe you haven't heard of as
far as like the tree. It'slike like I didn't hear about fright snickers
of goodness. I feel with myargeries clogging up. But some of these
vendors offer sort of like international typetreats, don't they Some of them do
(25:12):
definitely our sponsors definitely, um,like Coca Cola. Of course, they're
nationwide, um wah wah. Thereare some that are primarily local, but
they also ship anywhere across the US. What I mean is they're going to
have desserts we never heard of,right, So can I read that somewhere?
It's it's very possible. We actuallydon't have a solid menu listed just
(25:33):
yet. So some of them arestill sort of collaborating. There may very
well even be desserts that we havenot even heard of. There are some
creating things specifically for this event. For example, Brookwood Exotic Snacks he actually
has, so he's a snack vendorand he does a lot of things with
um, like chips from Japan andlike Malaysian cookies and things like that.
(25:56):
And so one of the things hehas is like pepsi a taste and has
gummy bears somehow in it, andlike don't they have sugar? I think
they had that at Epcot. Doesa coke do that? One of those
big companies do that? Where youhad these little cups and they're like from
all over the world and they havedifferent case of like a version of it.
Yeah, my grandson told me that'sone of his favorites. Yeah,
(26:18):
that's what it sounds like. Yeah, yeah, it's it's amazing. I
mean even the flavors of the chipsat the event, he's going to have
a lot of the sugary ones.So there's like brown sugar flavored potato chips
and like strawberries and cream oreos.I have no idea where he finds this
stuff. Well, I want toask you. I heard that you you
big cakes, all different cakes atyour home. But you have a new
(26:38):
line, said somebody get you totell me wrong that you've turned it into
a body butter the flavors of bodybody flame. No, so that was
a separate business that I was lookingto support. It's actually a Shaunty body
butter company. They just opened upin camp Hill. But they opened up
a labors like a skincare bakery.Yeah, that's what I was thinking about
(27:03):
that. Oh no, okay,so you're doing this, Yeah, and
you have your regular customers and canyou tell us where you're located if somebody
