Speaker 1 (00:12):
That says the master on Hakano. It used to be
spank Tourist Southland finished over the weekend and this be honest.
We need a one day of hitteous weather and we
got it on Saturday. Not that it metter to our
next guest, Josh Burnette, three time Tour of Southland winner,
which is a pretty esteemed company, the Josh Holes, Locks
of the Ryan Fowlers and the likes. So he's joining

(00:33):
us this afternoon just to look back on the week
and having a tour in January down here in the South. Josh, welcome.
Always good to chat and first to congratulations on the
three peat.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
If I had any back on and yeah, there was
a superstisial week to the back racing on home roads
and yeah obviously gets to the streets there are times,
but yeah, I was just super grateful for the support
out there and he had to check it off.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
In the end.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
What does it mean to win something like the Tour
of south On three times?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I think, yeah, it's hard to put it into words.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Each year I seem to get more and more support
and signs out there on the road, and I think
it's just cool to be able to do it in
front of all my friends and family, because I don't
really get that opportunity much anymore, racing so far away
from home in Europe. So I think it's just cool
to have something so significant in my sport and my

(01:28):
community is not many people can say that, and yeah,
to win it, I think.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Just really taps it off for everyone involved.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Now, straight off the calf. Normally this event is held
in October, but the obvious with the weather it got
delayed until January. Did it detract from the event at all?
Josh or to add a little bit more mistake as such?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, I think it maybe built up the high levels
a little bit. Some of the Audie boys couldn't come over,
but a few more other guys could, so it changed
it slightly. When it comes to, you know, the stages
and the weather, I think everything was pretty much the same.
So yeah, it was just a massive credit to the

(02:10):
organizing committee for being able to move the race on
such short notice because it's a bit of a logistical
nightmare bike race.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
So yeah, I just take my head off to them.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Interesting, you use the word stressful and you're opening Stanza,
and I suppose when you come to an event like
this it's all about being in the zone and the legs.
When you talk about the stress when you're doing something
like the Tourist's South, and what comes to mind from
an athlete's perspective.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
What you can control, and then yeah, make certain situations happen.
Where's one of my teammates he broke his arm, and
we had a few other guys and different places on
the road, and I didn't really know what was happening.
So yeah, you just got to try do the bits
you can with limited information sometimes and yeah, sometimes it

(02:58):
goes in your favor and sometimes it does and so yeah,
I think it's just kind of making quick and decisive
decisions and.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Just kind of praying that they're going to be the
right ones.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
So when you prepare for an event like this, it
doesn't deviate from the October edition as such, because.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
This is the fast race of the year for me,
so obviouinitely won't be at my top level yet, so
it was more of a slow build into the year
rather if it's an OBMB, you can, I don't know,
kind of throw everything at it and then take a break.
So yeah, unfortunately no break for me this time around,
but yeah, hopefully it's a good sign for the next

(03:39):
races to come.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Now you're writing pro over in Europe at the moment
and one of the quotes I read earlier on was
as good being in south and you can understand the roads,
so it's not something that happens over there. But getting
people to come over and when you explain what the
Tour of Southland is about, do they get keen to
come over and get involved.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Able to show them, you know, all the fantastic photos
that James Shubb takes and all the all the videos
on YouTube from the media team. It just really show
pieces our region and what it's all about. So lots
of guys you know, to to come to New Zealand
and in South of all places is definitely up there

(04:21):
just because of the bike race. So I think that's
just pretty pretty special really to get a bit of
hype and yeah, interest in the region from a bike race,
in my opinion is yeah, is super cool.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Now, the gravel stage over the Glenn New was cut
this year. Were you disappointed by that?

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, I really like that stage.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
I think it's it's definitely missing from the race and
I hope it comes back. I know it's quite logistically
hard to do with the grading and the roadworks sometimes,
but I really think that would be a great addition
if we can could bring that back to the race.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
So just how texting is it doing an event like
that so full on for a week, Josh? Like as
far as recovery, how long do you give yourself after
six seven days in the saddle that have been full.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
On, one day off that back training today?

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Well jeebus, Yeah it doesn't really slow down.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
But yeah, it's obviously I've got my whole season to
hit in me, so it's just I'm slowly doing it
into my years. So it's been a good start but
hopefully some some more good results are going to come
as well this year.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Okay, so the season ahead for Josh Burnett, what does
it hold? When do you go back overseas.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I've got Road National Champs next Saturday, and then I'll
go back to Europe on the next day on the Sunday,
so and then we're just pretty much racing, not all
the way into mid October.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
So it's a full on year. But yeah, I'm really
excited to get back to it, and.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Of course the event is happening in October, we're going
back to the twelve month cycles. Say, are you hoping
to come back and defend your crow on you again?

Speaker 3 (06:04):
I have no idea what I'm going to be doing
in the October and the next year. So yeah, I
can't thinkink about that year.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
I've just got see the months of other races to
focus on and then I'll work out where about I
am and make your plan from there.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
So it's a Saturday night. Did you have a celebratory
drink after what you achieved? Were just too naked?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
You hurt?

Speaker 2 (06:26):
They We may have had a couple, so it was
it was a good good night and yeah, it was.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Just good to you know, celerate with some of my
good mates.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Hey Josh for a three time tour of Southland. Spent
