Speaker 1 (00:01):
Where the welcome back to the Muster dire Straits. It's
the tunes for a Wednesday. Sultom's a swing fantastic song.
James Burrows of Derry and Zed joins us next. Good afternoon, James,
(00:22):
I've known Andy.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
It was a late night last night due to the
South of Totaga dairy wards and the cargo. But I'm coping.
But it's not about me. It's about what's happening in
the sector at the moment. There's a lot of cool
stuff going on, especially with Derry in Z's now. Something
that hasn't really been an issue this season was space
at the works, but cold cow availability and space becomes
(00:46):
an issue because you get into the wards their bottleneck
towards the end of the year season.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, so I guess that's everybody's well aware of what where.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
The payout is and what that's doing, so everybody seems
to be holding on to cold caws a lot longer.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
This year, we've said really good prices for col cows
at the works sort of nationally, we're looking at that
on a five year average, looking at thirteen to fifteen
percent below where we have been in the past. So
it just is worth.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Noting that, like you say, as we get to the
tail end of the season, that booking and booking and
color animals might not be as easy as as we think.
So it is just worth bearing in mind that as
we do to come to the end of the season
that space will be tight, and just making sure that
(01:39):
you've either got them pre bogged in a long way
at advance, or if you can't get them away, you've
got a plan because a lot of people will be
there will be a lot of col cows coming up,
so just to be mindful of that.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Quite a few events on the horizon as well. Mark
and Measure yep.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
So darien Z runs Mark and Measure, and that is
I guess the three day event happening up in Hamna
Springs this year. It's a bit that the last few
years been happening down in Queenstown. But good opportunity him
is just up the road from my home. Awesome place
to go for a little break. So Mark I measures
just a three day course to get a deep dive
(02:21):
into your business and skills and to sort of gain
a bit more confidence and do a bit more learning
in terms of where your own business can develop in
any opportunities you've got within your own systems. So registrations
are required, so you can just do that on the
via Darians website. So that is booked in for the
(02:44):
fourteenth to the sixteenth of July, and make sure if
you're really wanting to push the boundaries and understand your
own business a bit more. It's an awesome course. There's
a lot of great feedback from paths, so yeah, a
really great course. Get online, get the information and have
(03:06):
a look and see where it's going to tickle your fancy.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Now, the Southland Dairy b Field Day is happening thirty
first of March at term and Justine McCrae's property. This
is all about making better use of cars yep.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
So we've seen a push in the media with the
government announcement around trying to reduce wastage from the dairy
industry and so this event's being run with dairy and
zeden beef and lamb and looking at strategies and ideas
around how the best incorporate dairy beef into your system.
(03:45):
I mean a lot of farmers are already doing it
and doing it really successfully, but if you're sort of
on the edge or trying to figure out how exactly
to work for your farm system. Great to get along
and see someone that's doing it well and through the area.
Often the best way to learn is to go and
see someone that's already doing it and doing it well.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And that's what we've got for that day.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah, So it's all about just educating the stage around this.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, and I guess how to how what are the
opportunities going forward? And I guess the other thing is
what struggles there are and have been for farmers that
are doing it. It's not always just a simple flick
the switch and you can set up your system for
it easier. There's obviously a number of changes that would
(04:36):
have to be made within systems, but getting along and
talking to someone who's doing it and doing it well
is the best way to understand how you can incorporate
into your system.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
And just finally, James regarding awesome planning, what's a couple
of key things at the moment.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Really good understanding in terms of what sort of feed
you've got on hand between now and the end of winter,
Oh sorry that the start of winter, be it supplement
feeding or whatnot. If you're going down the track of
feeding winter crops, transitioning onto winter crops, getting that right.
(05:15):
We all know how tricky that can be, be at
botto beet or kale or whatever. Making sure we've got
a plan in place for that if things don't go well.
The key one there is really understanding what you yield
are what you're dealing with there. It's always tricky when
you're halfwy guessing what you're putting powers into. So really
(05:38):
just getting those numbers and knowing what feed you've got
on hand to feed between now and say first to June,
and so that you can have a better idea of
what you're going to be carrying over into the spring.
Good on you.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
James always got to catch up with the team from
darien Z.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
That perfect things. Andy much appreciate it.
