In the Nashville music world, friendships can take you a long way, maybe even to the top of the charts. The current trend of “collabs” in Music City has created some big time hit songs. It takes magic to pull it off. Everything from getting clearance from competing labels, to scheduling, and not to mention “making it click” in the studio. Well, it seems the latest duet from Superstar Cole Swindell and recent chart topper Lainey Wilson has been able to accomplish all the aforementioned. They are having a blast with their new “collab” NEVER SAY NEVER. You’ll quickly see that’s the case as they visit with Lorianne and Charlie on Crook & Chase Nashville Chats....

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everybody, and let us say happy holidays from the

(00:02):
Crook and Chase Countdown and Glorian Crook and Charlie Chase.
Right here, this is our Nashville Chats podcast. And of
course every weekend on our Countdown we welcome the biggest
stars as part of our show and we get a
chance to talk with him and share some of those conversations.
But here on the podcast we get to share the
entire conversation we have. And we've got a couple of
people today who are just a hoop. I think they

(00:23):
were made to be hanging around with each other, Laura,
I think so fast friends. We should call them Cole
Swindell and Laney Wilson. You know, it's interesting normally in
collapse collaborations and country music artists who have been friends
for a really long time. Yeah, like Jason Aldi, Carrie Underwood. Right,
there's a whole bunch of ms spent on the chart lately,

(00:43):
Chris Young and Kane Brown, Hardy, Lauren Devon Blake and
Gwen I mean, I mean, the list just getting longer
every day. Dustin Lynch, Mackenzie Porter recently number one. So
the teamwork of sort of thing is working here in
Music City. When it comes to music new ways to
reach number one it Cole Swindella did it a little differently.
He co wrote a song called Never Seen Never, and

(01:06):
he held it for a little while, knowing that it
needed another voice, but he just couldn't figure out, Okay,
who could it be? How could we do it? But
then at a party it happened. We've been having an
absolute blast. How are y'all doing? We were doing great good.
You know, I think one of the most fun and
fascinating things about country music is the friendships that are

(01:30):
involved in creating such great music. Take us behind the
scenes of your friendship, how you crossed paths, and and
why you wanted to work together. Absolutely so. I signed
my publishing deal with Sony in two thousand seventeen, and um,
we had went to a b m I Award show
and then after we were having a Sony after party,

(01:51):
and I just kind of shook Cole's hand. I mean,
we were introduced very briefly, but I've always been a
fan of his, um, and so you know, we we
kind of crossed pass here and there, But really I
haven't got to know each other really well until lately,
and um, you know, just doing a lot of press
and stuff with this song, and it's just been a joy.
He has seriously become one of my my great friends,

(02:11):
and I know, fifty years from now, we're still gonna
be friends. It's just it's that kind of that kind
of thing, you know. I uh, And I've been a
fan of hers, you know, her debut album and her
recent the first number one song is just uh. You know.
When I wrote this song, we wrote it as a duet.
I just didn't know, you know, who that was gonna
be or when that was gonna come out, And it's

(02:33):
just it's crazy. I was getting a little impatient. It's
been two years, you know, and then finally she was
after things a man ought to know. I was getting
ready to go number one. I was in between singles.
It just felt like we had the idea of Laney.
I was like, man, I'm that would be perfect. I'm
such a fan, and I just it takes a special
kind of person to I feel like, pull this song
off and make it believable. And I just I just

(02:54):
had even though it's rocking, I just knew she was
gonna crush it like that, and she she did, and
just the three action. Man, it's been it's blowing us
away and we're just very very thankful that the timing
and everything worked out perfect. When I first heard the song,
I thought to myself, Man, what a great combination. This
is a fast, back and forth song. As you mentioned fast, Larry.
I mean, she's a match your bug spray or something

(03:16):
like that. So how tough is it back and forth
in the studio like that to get the feeld of
the song and work together. Yeah, So we actually went
in and we tracked the song together. You know, I
think I've been in Nashville maybe a total of ten
days in the past eight months, so we had a
hard time finding a time where both of us were
in town, but it just happened to work out. We

(03:38):
were in there and while the band was playing it,
and we were jumping around acting crazy because we were
so dang excited. But um, I ended up actually putting
my vocal on it without Cole's vocal on it just yet.
We we did have a little scratch vocal, but I
went in and sang my part, and a few days
later he went in and sang his, and so we
weren't in there together. While we did it and that's

(03:59):
what what's so crazy that it ended up sounding the
way that it great? I know, I mean it feels
like we were but it's just you know, when when
we've got the final mix back and just to hear
how our voices sounded together, it's just that's what you
hope for, but you never know. I've never had a
do it like that, and it just to me, Um,
I don't know, it's not being there, just being together
to get watch it be recorded. We have footage of

(04:22):
that and just I mean, we weren't hiding anything and
we were just having fun and just freaking out pretty much.
Just that feeling like, man, just you know, this could
be something special and I really do. We both believe that,
you know. Um, For me, I think it's the next
chapter of my career. I think Laney is it's going
to keep all the success rolling. It's just things it's
gonna be big for both of us and what we're
trying to do and where we're taking it. Now. You

(04:44):
got to do you have the success of this song.
They're the only challenge to something like this getting the
two of you together to perform it live. So my
chance is that in the works. Well, I thought about
actually painting one side of my face with a mustache
and like a man just turned into one side and
then turn it back to the other. He let me,
let me just say that's not gonna work. Okay, I

(05:05):
don't know, never say never. We're trying to think of
that because I mean, we obviously cannot wait to be
able to perform it live. But you know, she's gonna
be out with Dirk's uh at the beginning of the year.
I'm doing my own thing. So we're gonna have to
just find some off time, hopefully with some shows here
and there, that we can do it until we uh
can you know, hopefully get to play it at some point.
We'll see when that comes. Well, and you know, I'm

(05:27):
just really interested about as I mentioned earlier, I'm very
interested about the relationships in country music and the friendships.
So Laney, what is it just as a person that
you like about Cole and Cole you can tell me
the same about Laney. I think he is real, He
has nobody but himself, and I can't help but love
people like that. Um Like, I just I knew immediately

(05:51):
that we were gonna be friends. It just kind of
seems like we were cut from the same closs, you know.
And um, and he loves country music just as much
as I love it, and you can just tell. I mean,
he's just eat up with it. So um no, I'm
telling you, like the past three weeks, I guess that
we've gotten to spend way more time together and we
have laughed a lot, and this is gonna be fun. Yeah,

(06:14):
that's I mean, I feel the same. I mean, you
meet somebody that you're a fan of, but then you
become a you know, bigger fan of them as a person.
I mean that's Laney. She's you know, as genuine as
it gets. She loves country, me that she is country
and I just to me, I mean, she can't even
hide it. It's uh, it's amazing to be around people
like that. And to me, I'll tell you, I didn't
realize how funny she was. I mean, this is we've

(06:36):
absolutely it's been some long days, but it's it's been
fun honestly, Like I can't say that, you know, it's
a little oh my god, alright, stop laughing. So we're
having we're having a good time. We're uh and I
we're both excited. We were going to get to talk
to you all. Y'all know you are two of two
of my favorites. Well, you guys have quickly become favorites
of ours too. Now, okay, Laney, I gotta ask me.

(06:58):
Having worked with Cole and since you're a bit of
an expert in the field, is there anything Cold ought
to know. We don't have time. I don't know if
we got enough time for that day. Oh my lord, man, Cole,
I don't know. Cole. You may you may just want

(07:19):
to get some advice from her. I'm telling you. Trust
I'm sure he knows how to change the tire. I'm
sure all that. And it seems like, you know, he
knows how to treat girls and all that, so it
seems like he's got most of it covered. Yeah, we're
gonna see though. I know we're gonna be around each
other a lot, so I'm sure she's gonna come up
with a few things. Hold on, wait a minute, now, Cold,

(07:40):
get this. I just thought of this. You better be
careful because Laney's next solo follow up could be written
about you. Never yeah, it could be. Just just tell
her she's in the middle of a memory. Okay, So
where he goes there. We're in the middle of a
lot of things. Yeah, this is It's been a blast,
and I'm just glad that we have a song together

(08:01):
and the people. Just the reaction. Man, it's just this
is what you pray, you hope for, and it just
doesn't always happen like this. I was telling her. At
all my singles, I don't. This just feels the reaction
and the buzz around. It just feels different than any
of them. So we're gonna see where it goes. Okay, well,
I have a quick suggestion, Laney, as a celebration to
this excellent duet with Cole Swindell, you need to take

(08:24):
Cole on your infamous drive by McDonald's just to celebrate. Okay,
oh my god. Well he probably doesn't know what that is,
but you I don't know. I know what McDonald's is,
and I know i'd go with her. I know that
we had it there after this, get a happy meal,
and oh, Cole Swindel, Laney Wilson, And here is the

(08:44):
inside story behind driving by McDonald's. You see, as a toddler,
Laney loved McDonald so her dad would kind of tease her.
He would put her this is a sort of mean. Actually,
he would put her in the back, you know, in
her strapper in the car seat and say, hey, you know, Laney,
daddy's going to drive you by McDonald's. Well a little
two year old Laney would get so excited, but to

(09:07):
tease her, he would literally just drive by McDonald about stopping. Yeah,
I didn't go in. He would just drive drive by.
Laney got so mad about that running joke. Uh, I
can't say. Okay, let me figure out how to say it.
That this one time as her dad did this drive by,

(09:28):
that was such a joke. Two year old Laney said,
you know, I'm getting tired of this crap. But she
didn't say crap, No, she said she really said, at
two years old, the S word. Yeah, I know. I
don't think her dad did the drive by anymore. He stopped.
I guarantee you that. But that's such a wonderful She
is such a hoot, and she and and Cole are

(09:51):
just you know, having a blast together. Oh, he has
such a great personality. He's so much fun. And he said, seriously,
the minute that they got together to even talk about
the collaboration, he knew, Matt, this is it and they
became really good friends are on their way. Well, my friends,
you know we have your country covered and uncovered in
