It’s been 4 years since the death of his singing partner and close friend Troy Gentry, but for Eddie Montgomery, as the title of his new album implies, AIN’T NO CLOSING ME DOWN. Eddie carries on the Montgomery Gentry legacy with his first solo album, and it contains a few surprises among the highly regarded Montgomery Gentry type songs. Eddie visits with Lorianne and Charlie to discuss those surprises as well as his free-spirited, down home way of life with his Smokin’ Hot Wife at home in Kentucky. Eddie is genuinely “one of a kind” and a blast to hang with. Settle in for a spell and see what we mean. You won’t be disappointed.

builder dot com. Hi got everybody. Welcome to Crook and
Chase and Nashville Chats, where we like to share conversations
we have with our close friends and country music. And
they're big stars, but they're actually close friends to us
more than anything else. And today spotlights on Eddie Montgomery.
You know, Louren, it's hard to believe has been four
years since the passing of Troy Gentry of that helicopter crash.
And when that happened, you know, both were sitting around

(01:52):
on Oh my goodness, what's gonna do to Eddie Montgomery,
you know, his long time singing partner. I've been together
forever and all the music they've done done together and
it's second some time. But but Eddie's back and he
has a brand new album out, and let's see, I
want to make sure I get the title of it right. Okay,
it is ain't no closing me down, thank you, Charlie,

(02:14):
and it kind of yeah, And I wanted to look
it up, make sure I got it right because this
is a very important album for him because he's going
on tour staying with the band. He's trying to keep
that legacy together. And we were just really thrilled to
find the mindsets in well yes, because in the four
years since t Roy, as he calls him, um, passed away,

(02:35):
as she said, so tragic. We've talked to Eddie a
couple of times and he seemed to be a little
bit of a different man. He was still grieving, still
trying to get through it. But as you are about
to hear in our most recent conversation from just a
few days ago, Eddie is he's keeping the promise that

(02:55):
he and Troy made that if something ever happened to
the other one, the remaining member of Montgomery Gentry would
soldier on. But that's exactly what is happening with Eddie MCA,
and that includes raising some hell wherever he is. He's
basically a mess. Get a load of this. Gosh, it's
so good to talk to you. I hate it that we,

(03:17):
you know, all this COVID stuff, we can't be together.
But uh uh, this fire is isn't stopping you, is it?
You know, closing me down? Baby? I'm telling I'm so happy.
I gotta sit on my hands, keep weight. Everybody I'm
just uh, you know, life is very short, man, and
I'm gonna live every second. Okay, now yeah, okay, that
is one song. I'm gonna check off every song used
in the conversation here. Ain't no closing me down. That's

(03:39):
the first one. Okay. Hey, and I love the way
you started the album. It's like, hey, grab me a beer. Huh. Yeah,
I tell you what. It's so funny, ma'am. Because you
know when everything got shut down. Uh, that's one thing man,
I can't say that, you know. I think t Roy
was with me the whole time was closed down and stuff,
because I was in my garage and what happened was

(04:00):
all the places were closed down, restaurants, bars and everything.
So I got in my garage, I backed my truck out.
Next thing I know, guys were coming by, and I
got all these grills. You know, I'm a big grill dude.
So I got the green eggs, I got the horizontal
and the vertical, uh, pit balls, smokers. I got the
black stone flat top with air fryer under. It's kind

(04:23):
of like a forest fire when you have a party
over there, and uh, it's not a party, it's called living.
And so we just like to live with a lot
of libations and stuff. So anyway, getting back to my garage.
Next thing I know, I had a bunch of friends
to start coming over and will next thing I know,
I ended up where all the restaurants was closing down.

(04:43):
I've seen that they were selling uh their equipment stuff.
So I went about this real big refrigerator with a
glass front, and of course it's full of gym beam
and cold beer. It's one thing's allowed in it. And
uh so we started cooking out. Next thing I know,
I started hanging TVs in my garage and then a
dark board and a disco ball and I had tables
in there and nex. Yeah. The next thing I know,

(05:08):
hell it turned into a bar. So I had and
what's so funny is I live. Uh you know they're
on the on the golf course now and everybody that
was playing golf because none of the golf courses were
closed down on the only thing. Next thing I know,
golfers started bringing their carts to my house because I
lived backed up to a farm. But they started coming over. Well,

(05:31):
I was giving the ups and the FedEx guy's hamburgers
and stuff, and we just was bringing stuff to what
we cook. So we cook ribs, brisket, I mean, and
of course on the flat top. Uh yeah, on the
flattop we cook fried rice. Well uh that habachi thing
whatever you calling. So how long were you in an
operation before they shut you down? Uh? They didn't. Uh

(05:55):
that's what funny part of that. It was, well people
were coming by and that he's gonna like, man, I
don't you can't do it. And I said the hill,
I can't hide and watch Eddie. Did you name this
bar of yours? Did you given an official name and
hang a sign? Well, yeah, there was a sign made
for it that's hung up. It's a Neon sign, believe
it or not, and it's called Everybody started coming by

(06:17):
and they was talking on the golf course, even people
I've never had met before. Day's gonna like, they said, well,
I'll go to Eddie's garage. He's got everything up there.
So it's just Eddie's garage. It's Eddi's garage. Yea. I
even got a shirt. Somebody may made shirt. So you know,
we've talked about actually talking about coming up with a
show called Eddie's Garage. Oh, he's got merch and everything. Yeah,

(06:37):
this is insane. Could have been it could have been
called cry Whiskey. There you go, man, I tell you
what that's Uh you know that song right there? Man, Uh,
it's just a it's a honky tonk bar or song.
And I mean that's a you know, I think that's
what I wanted to you know, the CD and stuff
to be. I wanted to come out of my soul.
And uh, you know when I got in there and
when everything was shut down and having having fun and

(06:59):
living life with my friends. I tell you, man, it's
the Uh, it's just a honky tnk you know. Me
and t Roy always done honkey talk fun songs and
and just told you know, we sing about the good
to be at Ugly ending party on the weekend. Sure,
let's go back to Eddie's Gross for a minute. Did
you perform it? There's some of these songs. Uh, you know,
everybody's picked in their here John Boy or John Michael's.

(07:21):
Everybody knows. Hi. My brother comes over all time and uh,
you know, will cook stuff. A matter of fact, he
come over when we got his driver called Kentucky Mike. Uh,
they brought a whole big I don't know how many
bushels of oysters. So we steamed some oysters, and I
mean we do everything over there, man, it don't matter.
We've cooked. We had. Uh, we had a crab that

(07:42):
was sent to to us for to my smoking hot
wife GINGI in. Uh what is it the dead list?
Catch them guys sends send us a big crab and stuff.
So we pulled that baby up and cook did I
mean there's nothing. I'll tell you what, man, there ain't nothing.
We won't try to cook turtle. I mean everybody brings
everything by. Man, it's like, okay, we'll cook it. Come on, okay,

(08:02):
now wait a minute, it's october Fest time. Are you
gonna do the beer and the Bronts and all of that. Oh,
I'm I'm telling you anything that somebody brings over to
Eddie's grudge or uh, it's gonna get cooked. So better
look out you bring it. By a matter of fact,
to be honest with you, Uh, I just had a

(08:22):
bunch of calf fries give to me, so they're getting
ready to get cooked up. I'm guessing that just about
every day of the week over there is october Fest. Huh.
You know, man, that's the way, that's the way. We
love it. Man. We live in life and uh, you know,
uh we hang out, have fun and that's what it's
all about, and listen to great music and uh have
a ball games on the TVs. And I only think

(08:45):
I haven't gotten my garage yet, and they Kentucky won't
let me have it, and smoking hot wife and my
friends would love it as I need a Keynow machine.
If I get a Keynow machine, to look out, it's
developing into casino Laura. I'm telling you, Eddie, you are insane.
And we say that with love. Man, I'll tell you

(09:07):
what you know. Like I said, I'm gonna be one
of them guys. You know you always hear people when
you'll be sitting somewhere and they're like, you know what, man,
I wish i'd try that, or I'd love to try that.
I'm going to be the guy to in going well,
maybe I shouldn't have tried that. I wish I wouldn't
have done that one. Hell, you've done most of it already.
That's it, baby, I'm ted yet. So somebody asked me

(09:28):
that earlier and I was like, I said, Hell, there
ain't much we am it think of. I said, if
it's out there, we'll try it all right. So you
have just been so busy having a great time in life,
which is what we should all be doing. How did
you have time to write all this new music? You know,
I'll tell you just really kind of really come out

(09:50):
of him. Man. When I was writing with the course,
writting with Iredene and Chris Wall and Jeffery Steele and
all the guys. Man, I'll tell you what. I can't
thank them enough. And no Gordon, my producer, it's just
been totally awesome. And I mean that's what it was.
It was a bunch of friends, man, getting together and
just throwing some stuff down on paper. Ran at uh

(10:11):
uh filling out her soul and uh that's what that's
what I like to do. And uh you know, well
like my son I wrote for the movie Old Henry,
which is uh. I thought when I first heard it
and he was talked about writing a song, I went, uh,
Old Henry, you talk about the rifle? I was like no.
And then once I've seen the trailer, of course, so

(10:32):
William Bonnie's real name is Henry, and so it's Old
Henry and it's about uh uh Billy the kid really
didn't Pat Garrett didn't kill him, and he had a
son and he went and head for a while. And
I won't give the rest of the movie away, but anyway,
you know, of course, and I've lost a couple of sons,
spaying uh to two boys uh I dearly loved a
few years back, and so some of that come out

(10:53):
in me. And so I think I think all the
songs man really kind of helped me through a lot
of stuff. You know, Well, tell me about live and
well that's the new single you're putting out there for
everyone to hear. So what does that song just mean
deep down personally to you? You know, I've been through
a lot of stuff, but man, I'm still alive and
well man, and it's you know, uh through Troy helped

(11:16):
me live life. My son's helped me live life. I
mean everybody, and it's life is short, it's very it's
you can be gone here right now. And so I
just want to everybody know, man, it's you know, and
as long as I'm alive, and well, so are they.
In the song Eddy, you also talk about how it
is hard to get back up after experiencing some of

(11:38):
those things. Do you think those of us who are
fans of yours. Do you think we understand uh what
it's been like for you? Uh? You know what, I'll
tell you what. All the songs that we've put out
over the years from tattoos and scars are way to
uh close me down now. Um. You know, we'd have
people come up to us and going like, man, I've

(11:59):
been through that. I've been through that, man, you know,
and I've been there and your music has helped me.
And I tell you what, Uh, any time that uh
we can do that, that's better than any awards you
could ever get or anything else. Man. And that's uh,
you know. And I want to let everybody know that
I'm I'm alive well and I'm still kicking. I'm gonna
I'm gonna keep going because that's what me and t
Roy promised each other man years back over some jam

(12:20):
being It's a personal statement of moving forward. There's no
doubt about that. But I'm curious when you performed that song.
I'm trying to imagine and and really I can't imagine
what you're seeing in your mind and feeling in your
heart considering the lyrics here. I tell you, when I
do do it, it Uh, I want to sing. I
still get uh, you know, you get that what they

(12:41):
call you know, a country boy calls chicken skin. You know,
you get to you don't kind of get them bumps
on your neck and stuff. And you're gonna I have
to watch it because I'll get Uh. I can't if
I think about it too hard while I'm singing it.
Then uh, you know, I get that lump in my
throat and my heart kind of sinks in my stomach,
you know what I mean. So that's uh, and that's
the main thing. But you know, I'll never forget him,

(13:03):
and I don't want. I want to make sure. Man,
I made a promise and ain't nobody gonna forget him
in it. So and I want to make sure as
long as I'm alive and well then that uh, they're
gonna be here. I want to go back to the
song my Son that you did for the movie Old
Henry Uh, Tim Blake, Nelson, Sender, Gavin Lewis, Trace Atkins.
Did you did you know what's he doing there? Well?
I can't give the movie away, but I mean I'll

(13:25):
tell you what I did. Hear a little story on
them when they was because I went out and I
shot where they cut the movie. I shot the video. Also,
h that's a great set. By the way, I was
wondering whether that was dude I could live or remind me.
And everybody was freaking out because when I was in
that house, I said, oh my god, I said, this
is identical to like my grandmother and grandfather's man, that's

(13:46):
what I was seeing in it. I grew up. I
grew up in a house like that, you know, with
the It was an old one morning stove. It had
it burned co or uh wood, you know. And I
remember pat my grandfather put wood in the stove in
the daytime. At night he'd burn cold because it stay
warm all night. But yeah, the sitting out there is unreal.
It's unbelievable. And uh, what was funny when I was

(14:09):
going back to apparently you know, of course Tracey's big,
old tall drink of water. And when they put him
in uh, I'll tell you this one thing. When they
put him down in a in a hole when he
was digging a hole, they had to go ahead and
dig it deeper, so because he was so much taller
than everybody. Yeah, so I thought that was kind of funny.

(14:29):
But I'll tell you what, man, I can't believe it.
Uh you know, Uh, it's just great and I can't
wait to everybody sees it. And oh the trailer looks fantastic.
And in fact I was thinking, oh my gosh, you
should have taken a role in that movie. Are you?
Are you much of an actor? Uh? Well, I'm a
sucky actor. I play that about it like I played

(14:50):
golf and that. Uh I'm I'll tell you what I am.
I'm a lot better drinker and having fun than I
am a golf or acting. I'm tell you that right here.
No doubt. We had no doubt, did we, Charlie. Okay, Well, next,
after a quick break, we will touch upon one of
those surprises on the album that we hinted about. Eddie

(15:11):

you about the fact that you know you don't do
sappy love songs, and you know you're not that you know,

(17:22):
big of a romantic guy. But Eddie, we've had a
breakthrough here in the song she Just Loves Me. Man,
you did it. You crossed the line into romance and
it's a good thing. Well, you know, I wrote that
about my smoking hot wife Genen, and uh you know,
I'll tell you what, uh Man, I gave all the
credit to her because it's uh, you know, she's uh

(17:45):
lived everything right there with me. Man, And I'll tell
you what. It's a She's best friend in the world.
I got. Her first name is smoking, isn't you know?
That's what everybody calls her now? Smoking hot wise talking
about smoking A song that really caught my attention with
Tanya Tucker higher. Let me tell you a blast for that.

(18:07):
I'm telling you I'll put her up against any young
artist right now if they want to go. Her voice
is that strong, man, I mean it's awesome. Uh. And
you know you anytime, you know, you always hear people mentioned, well,
you know Whylon and Willie and you know there's Murrell
and George. I'm gonna tell you right now if you
ain't got Tanya Tucker's name in there, because she's an

(18:27):
icon just as big as they are. And I'll tell
you what can she I mean, she just sings her
butt off, man, and I mean, where's it out? And
she's so strong and her vocals and I'll tell you
what is just a great honor? Uh to be able
to do the song with her? Well, man, your vocals
are really hot as well. Man, you are such a

(18:50):
great singer. Are are you picky when you listen back
to what you've done? Are you pretty picky about it?
Or do you just do the darn thing and and
you lay down the vocals and that's it. I hate
hearing me sing and I will pick it up hart.
I mean when I'm in the studio I'll sing it.
I mean, if I sing it once in the studio,
I'll probably do a hundred passes, man, just to make

(19:10):
see what I want. Uh. Yeah, I don't know why
I hate hearing me sing, and because every time I
hear it, no matter somebody's playing or whatever, I go like,
oh god, man, I could have done that better, you know.
And it's a so you know, I kind of beat
myself up on it. But hey, that's what it's all about, man,
And that sucks me. You're so good? What is it specifically?

(19:32):
You think that, um that maybe you don't like my voice.
You know, there's there's a there's a few things. Man,
it's a you can call me ugly. I ain't that
great of a singer, but I tell you what I ain't.
Nobody has more fun on stage than I do. Man,
when I get up there, I love it. I have
I have a ball with it. And you know, I'll

(19:55):
tell you a lot of stuff, man, I like Marty
Robbins used to do, man when he's at the opera
and stuff. Man. I remember listening with my dad on
the radio of the Opry and Marty Robbins would get
on there and they never could get him off, I know,
you know, and he would always go down and like
take pictures of people and stuff, man, you know, and
he'd make a fool kind of like out of himself.
But it was that's what was so great. I mean,

(20:17):
he what a hell of an entertainer man. And I
just you know, uh, I love that, and I reckon.
I just learned from them and learned from my dad,
and I learned from guys in the nightclubs that beat
nightclubs of all their life that you know, might that
might not have made it, but to me, they made
it because they were stars in you know, my hometown
and stuff. Yeah. Well, you're a bit of a strickler.
It comes to your voice. I guess you find it

(20:37):
hard to work with yourself. I do. I ain't, no, lie, man,
I hate hearing me singing. I don't know why, but
I just go like, oh my god, I couldn't. I
could do that better. The fans love to hear you sing.
They love to come see the shows. I know you're touring,
so give us a little preview of what the show
is all about. I know you you still tour with
the Montgomery Gentry Band, Is that right? The boys are
all together. Yeah, that's all. Yeah, you know, we all

(20:58):
been together twenty years. We've been through bus fires, bus bricks, uh, god, divorces.
You know. Of course, me and T knew each other
longer than we knew our wives. And most of the
guys and our and our band have been with us
since day one. You know, a lot of them are
from Lexington and so, uh, you know, they know us.
And that's why you know. I went in and I
fought for him because me and T had fought for

(21:19):
him all our all the whole time we've had a
record deal man, we want we want our guys to
have a chance to play on the on the CD.
And there was always no, no, no, no, no no,
because it's gonna take too long, we have to work
with them, blah blah blah. So this time I said,
and y'all know how it goes, because they always when
you come in, the first thing to do is like, well,
we're going to get a session musicians, which are awesome.

(21:40):
I'm not saying nothing bad about them, but I wanted
to give my guys a chance and they let me.
And I want to thank Noel Gordon for that man
in the label and they come in, I said, if
they can't do it, then we'll we'll trash it and
we'll bring assessing musicians. And my guys come in there
and knocked it out and Heed. What's so great about
it is they come in because I hadn't played them
the songs yet and because I was gonna give him

(22:01):
the songs. And my producer said, now said, if they
want to be uh, session musicians are going to come
in here and chart it and here it for the
first time and go out there and play it. And
they did, man, And I'll tell you what, I'm very
proud of him. And that's why I think, Man, I
just you know the whole CD. Man, I know, I
know Tea's up there. Man, I'm always happy as hell.
So uh, that's that's why I feel about it. And

(22:23):
I felt like he was there with us the whole time,
and Troy would be so proud of you. Eddie. Alright,
So Eddie has a new album, which means touring to
support it. All that's on the horizon. So does Eddie's
garage bar that he's discussed just kind of shut down.
Next on Nashville Chats, Eddie recalls what has happened in

the past when he left his bar unattended and the
surprises he discovered upon his return. Yeah, it is good.

mean when I you know, if I get a little
bit sad ways, well then she'll let me know about it.

(24:33):
And then when I do something great, she'll let me
know about it, which is very very rare, you know.
But you know, she's just always there. I mean always there.
I mean smoking hot wife. She even she gets up
the morning and lays my clothes out, so I don't
even you know, hell, I don't even dress myself. So
she's a great cook. Uh. She runs with me, and

(24:53):
she tells me when it's time to go. You know,
it's like, hey, when you know, I thought I was
dancing until people said kept stepping on my hands. Then
she'll tell me. She'll go like it's time to go. Right. Well,
it sounds like your only job around the house is
to replace the empty roller toilet paper. Is that about?
That's it right there. You don't even do that, do you?

(25:17):
I hang in the garage. You know, here's a funny
thing about it is I gotta tell you so. And
this is what makes me love her too. So anyway,
when all this started going down and having a bunch
of friends and stuff over, well, then I started noticing
when I'd go on the road, I'd call her and
I'd hear everybody laughing and sinking. Well, she's got all

(25:37):
her girl friends in my garage. And I'm going like, okay,
y'all can't be taking over my garage. You got my house.
Oh wait a minute, the man cave turned into a
she shed. There you go, I'm telling you, and their
calves with lipstick all over the land everywhere. It's terrible.
I'll tell you what. Man a fingernail. Also, I'll find
a fingernail or something and I'm like going. And then

(26:00):
I find this stuff in my frigerator. I'm like, what
the hell is this? And oh my gosh, is it water?
Just water? Oh no, that's a bunch of them, a
little mare Margaret rita bottles and stuff. And I find
this other find found tequila in there one day, you know,
And I'm not a big tequila drinker, and so I
know it wouldn't mind. And so I'm like going, Okay,

(26:21):
her girlfriends are coming over here. You got to lock
it up, man. No, no, no, no, no, Eddie. I
think you had it right when we first started talking.
You need to put cameras on this thing. This needs
to be a TV show. I would watch every episode. Uh.
You know. The only thing is it had to be uh,
it probably had to be at least an eighteen year
old claws on it, you know, because some of the

(26:42):
language sometimes and some of the things we talked about
can't get wild. Really come, here's what it's to happen,
Charlie Chase. Here's what needs to happen. You and I
we're gonna get Eddie's address. You and I are gonna
get on the John Dear tractor and we are riding
up to Eddie's garage to have a beer and whatever
the hell he has on that grill. That's right, because

(27:04):
there'll be I'll tell you what we're getting ready to.
I'm getting ready pull them all out here. In about
a week or so. When we got I got brisket,
we got fish. We got, uh oyster, we got salmons,
we got the course, we're gonna do the habachi and
uh well, actually I got a couple of turkeys. I'm
gonna smoke too. Well, why not plus plus plus a
calf fry. Well hey, now listen, I in closing, I

(27:28):
did see the picture of you of the gym Beam bus,
which is your home away from home. And we know,
we know what's in the bus tanks. So what's in
your tank inside the bus? Just what kind of stock
do you have inside? Uh? Well, trust me, uh it's
fully stopped. It's a fully stopped bar. Let me put
it that way. Uh So it's, uh, you know, our

(27:48):
home on wheels, man, and uh we love it. And
thank God for Jim Beam and stuff man. And uh
I tell you, specially with the with the pandemic going on,
the gym Beam was a lot of help man. Okay,
So Charlie again here we go to clothes. Uh using
the song titles, it is absolutely true. There ain't no

(28:09):
clothesing Eddie Montgomery down because he is alive and well,
because that's the kind of man he is. He knows
how to play the game. Because he can't kick it
up while he is crying whiskey and where is he
He's somewhere in the South, that's right. And he's living hey,
and he's living higher own life. Look out, boys, we

(28:29):
want to roll now, you know what. It's kind of
funny how they roll. So it's pretty cool. Hey, listen, man,
you roll safely out there. It's it's great to talk
with you. Guy knows what we'd love to see in person.
We're helping do that soon. Oh yeah, and y'all have
to come up d Eddie's garage. And I'm telling you
because once you go, once you go there, you never

(28:50):
go nowhere the hell think about. I'll bring my suitcase, Eddie.
We'll make we'll make sure we got rooms and everything.
I tell smoking. We said, hello, okay, we all tell
smoking smoking, hot wife. Y'all said, how you got it? Edie?
Thanks of This has been a blast. Thank you all
so much. I appreciated all right. See, I hope you
liked the album. By the way, we wouldn't be talking

(29:13):
to you if we didn't. Yeah, I don't know, so
I just try to say something. I don't suck. He
is so hard on himself. Eddie Montgomery just has the
best voice. He is such a well. As he mentioned,
when he gets on stage, nobody has more fun. And
it's just it's so fun to watch him having fun

(29:34):
that you can't help but have even more fun. Right,
Fun is the main word here, isn't uh? And you know,
I've never heard the term. I know what he's talking about,
but I've never heard the term chicken skin. You know,
where you feel the emotion of a song so much
you just gotta tingle along. Well, don't we call it
goose bumps? Yeah? And he calls the chicken skin? Right,
And and here he is in the movie. This guy

(29:55):
has got a lot going on. But you know, the
thing is we're in He's got the biggest heart in
the world. He died. He's such a sweet, sweet man
and we wish him all the best. I know this
is uh an important time for him. You know, a
solo album. He's continuing with the band, same band for
twenty years. So all the best. Jeddie, We love you, buddy.
And he knows he always always on stage in the

(30:17):
recording studio. He knows that t Roy is always there
by his side. Alright, folks, we have your country cover.
