n Charlie here Crook and Chase Nashville Chats and we're

(01:07):
sitting here at our studio on Music Row. The whole
town is a buzz gearing up for the fifty six
annual a c M Awards. Yes, indeed, coming to you
live April eighteen. That's a Sunday on CBS and today
for Nashville Chats. We get to feature some of the
big nominees. Yeah, we have some unusual stories not only

(01:29):
about them, but the songs as well that are part
of the show. And let us say that we are
very proud and Nashville that the a c M Awards
have taken place now for the second year in a row,
after being on the West Coast and in Vegas and
everywhere else, so it's kind of been separated from Nashville,
but glad they are settling in the music city here
for this particular show. And you mentioned some of the nominees.
Let's let's begin with a story behind the song. There's

(01:52):
a song called I Hope You're Happy Now from Carly
Pierce and Lee Bryce, nominated for Single of the Year
as well as music. They got they got that right
to the title right. Music event. Yes, I think it
used to be vocal event and then for c M
A it's called musical event, but a CMS, I think
you got it right. Music event. Big hit song I
Hope You're happy now, And it's always interesting in some

(02:14):
cases to hear the story behind the song boys that
ever popular here listening. Did she tell you why she
chose you? I mean, she said that even when she
was writing the song, that she just heard my voice
in her head. She said, I just she said she
wanted that lead thing, and I'd go, well, I don't
know what that is exactly. Um, she said, you know

(02:37):
what it is, she said, just seem like you do.
I go, okay, I can just do that. So um,
actually I had to. When I we decided to do it.
I heard the song and I was like, in you know,
I was like, yes absolutely, because she asked me to
be a part of the song and she's like, well,
we need it like tomorrow. I was like, well, I'm
in Idaho actually wherever you know, and I won't be
home for like six weeks. I was like, but I
got a studio on my bus, a full studio, so

(02:59):
I'll still vocal and send it to you and see
if it works. So that's what I did, and that's
what you hear on the radio. Wait a minute, So
the vocal we hear on the radio recorded on my
bus on your nowhere it's pre Vo audio past productions.
Are there any sort of background sounds you had to

(03:20):
edit out? I mean no, we didn't have to addit
anything because we had to Well, we did have to
bear with the heat because you know, turn a c off,
turn the motor off, and turn the generator off. Well,
women want to know were you wearing an elvis costume
when you do that? Well? Actually I was in my
birthday suit almost okay, I'll say my skivies. So you

(03:40):
recorded this in your underweard. I record almost everything on
my bus in minor where that's my living room. Does
Carly know this? I don't know if I ever told
her that part? Oh no, sorry, we frightened that. Yeah, here,
what's that happened? No? A few minutes later we ran
into Carly. You can tell that we were backstage at
a music event. We ran into Carly when we said, Carly,
we just talked to Lee Brice and do you have

(04:00):
any idea what he looked like when he was recording
his part of that duet with you? When we told
her that Lee recorded an entire thing in his underwear,
she would not even comment. She went, oh, no, I
don't think she even commented. Thank god, it was only
his voice that she was hearing. She wasn't seeing that vision.
And I dare him to do a video. I dare

(04:22):
you to do a video. Well, okay, let's move along
to another nominee. Here. This this young guy. I say young,
and he's got such a history so far when it
comes to songwriting in this tound. He's up for New
Male Artist in this particular category. We're talking about Hardy.
And if you've ever written a song and wondered, what
in the world do you do with it? Well, it

(04:45):
has to be good to begin with. You gotta have
some training. Let's put it this way. Writing a song
as as we put it here in Nashville, it's a thing.
It's not a thing. It's a thing with a T,
A N G. And this is Hardy to exp playing
why songwriting is such a thing. I read where you
received a degree in songwriting from Middle Tennessee State University.

(05:08):
So I'm curious and everybody listen to this. It is
probably the thing. Hey, I've written a song, what can
I do with it? Who is your instructor? And what
was the final exam? Like um My instructor was a
guy named Rick Karnes. He was a songwriter back in
the seventies. I remember him, yes, And the final exam,
I believe, was just to have a fully produced song

(05:30):
that we had written. The songwriting class itself was pretty
easy because all all we had to do was like,
write a song every week. That's easy. Come on, that's
not easy. Well okay, but that's true. But I mean
for somebody who's like, you know, for me, who's like,
that's like, I could do that in a day, and
it doesn't seem like it's homework, right, It just seems
like it's fun, you know. It was. It was easy,

(05:51):
I guess for the people that were there because they
wanted to be songwriters, it was it was much easier.
But I do remember I got a ticket because I
was late to my final exam, which was the song presentation,
and I was going ninety seven in a seventy and
I pulled over. I got pulled over and I got
a ticket on the way to my final exam for songwriting.
Oh that that was your first autograph. I don't think

(06:14):
he got arrested. That's a seventy. Lord, Well, can you
imagine that you know. I was thinking back just listening
to Hardy Talk. Can you imagine Hank Williams Junior or
Merle Haggard, any of those guys sitting in a classroom
learning how to compose a song. They just did it.
It was part of their DNA. I think it's very

(06:35):
cool that they teach that now in college. Writing a
song is one of the hardest things and you will
ever try to do. Trust me, you've tried. Yeah, I've tried. Oh, Charlie, okay.
On one of our Nashville chats, you need to bring
a guitar or maybe Keith Urban would would be your
backup here, and you need to sing us one of
the songs she wrote, Let me get on the phone here, Keith,

(06:56):
would you be my sideman for that's not gonna work, yeah, asked.
But let me give you a tip. When you're hanging
with a songwriter, be careful what you do because he'll
write about you. They will know. How many times Charlie
and We've been talking to somebody you know, like Thomas
Read or Keith Urban as you mentioned, and they'll go,
oh wait, stop yeah, And how many times do we say, well,

(07:18):
wait a minute, if you're going to use that we
were part of the conversation, so we need to get
some kind of royalty from this. And they say, okay,
have you seen a dime. I've never seen a dime.
We always asked for a third. We're not gonna get anything.
You're not gonna get anything. No, no, no, okay, let's
let's move on to another young lady here. I was
so impressed when I met her. She came into this
guitar that she had bedazzled. She's been like the whole summer.

(07:39):
Actually was quarantined last year. Five thousand rhinestone she put
on her particular guitar, So if you see her on stage,
you'll know how many rhinestones are there. Oh it's beautiful, beautiful.
Who were talking to Neil Arts? We're talking about she
is up for New Female Artists of the Year. She's
from Canada. I am surprised how many artists we have
now in Nashville that came from Canada. Boy, they are

(08:01):
prolific up there, aren't they. Tinniel Town's Lindsay l High Valley,
the two brothers are from Canada. So let's focus onto
Neil Arts right now, because she is coming on strong
with a song called Somebody like That. But just because
she's down here in Nashville does not mean that her
fans up north have forgotten about her. What do your

(08:24):
fans think about you up in Saskatchewan. I mean, all
of my friends have have stayed in touch. Everybody that
you know I went to high school with, they've all
been super supportive, which you know, it is a weird
thing when I mean they knew in high school that
I was like, I'm going to be in Nashville one day,
and they'd be like, yeah, okay, But um, they've been
super supportive. I actually have a group of like twelve

(08:47):
girlfriends that are still in a group chat that we've
been in this group chat since we were like in
tenth grade. But as far as fans coming up to
you after a show or whatever, what's been one of
the most memorable moments, I mean, there are so many.
There's actually this, um a few girls that started this
group called Taneil Nation on Instagram and at my opery debut,

(09:10):
they had contacted a bunch of people to put together
this scrap book for me, and they even messaged my
parents and so there were there were pictures and stories
from fans all over the world, and um at the
end was a story from my parents and pictures of
me with my parents and oh my gosh, talk about

(09:30):
an emotional moment like with all of the nerves of
the opry and then and then getting a gift like
that from my fans. I mean, that was just one
of the coolest experiences ever. That cool. Can you imagine?
I don't think anybody has ever done that for me? No,
I mean, that's strong. And they made a very long
trip to come down to supporter of the opery as
well that night. Now moving along to another guy, another newcomer.

(09:53):
This is the new male artist category. Actually, you're going
to find out that Travis Standing is gonna rename the
category here just a minute, okay, But I guess when
you're you're young and you're making your move on the chart. He,
by the way, is making a move on the chart
with the song called Abby. Don't you love that? Brand
new song Abby from Travis Standing stands for anybody but you.
It's a kiss off song, breakup song, love it right,

(10:16):
and it's getting him a lot of attention, and well,
he knows how to get a lot of attention as well.
Check this. You are nominated for a CM New Male
Artist of the Year. How about that Just so amazing,
I mean incredible, a true honor. I mean that that
award is probably my favorite award because I think it
puts a bit of a stamp of like responsibility and

(10:40):
kind of motivation on anybody nominated for that. I really
do like if you win New Male Artists, that's your
peers in your industry saying, hey, we think you are
one of the best new dudes on the scene, and
we expect a lot from you know, we expect great music,
wept great shows. And that's what I love about that

(11:02):
award is it puts a little pressure on you and
I love that. Well, there you are in the best
new Dude category. Yeah yeah, and that's not new do
is inhering? Have you decided what you're gonna wear? Um?
I'll be all see. You know, let's make a statement.
Let's just let's go for literally nothing but a cowboy head.

(11:22):
Let's do it. Would do it? He would do. Okay,
while we're getting crazy here, let's jump straight to Luke Bryan.
I mean, nobody is more fun or crazier than this guy.
He is up for Album of the Year, Born Here,
Live Here, Die Here, also for Entertainer of the Year.
He is friends. He's like Vince Gill in a way. Look,

(11:45):
Brian is friends with everybody in country music. He's growing
up in the business with people like Jason Aldean and
Toby Keith and on and on and on. So you know,
these guys. What I love about it is that they stay,
they remain friends, They stay close to each other, and
so many times as they see one of their brothers

(12:06):
in the music business having success, they'll just you know,
pop off and you know, buy him a tractor or
a motorcycle or something to help them celebrate. But oftentimes
they just remain juvenile, delinquents. Um. The album is Born here,
Live here, and Die here, and now it's embarrassed here.
What's the coolest gift anybody got you in the business?

(12:27):
Tim mcgrawl. I was in the shower on my tour
bus and Tim mcgrawl kicked the door in and Tim
made it raid hundreds on my naked body. Tim throws
them in there on me and they get wet, some
got soap in my eyes. Tim mcgrawl just saw me naked,
and I don't know what to feel. About that. So
after I realized what had happened, then I had to

(12:47):
get the like there in the floor of the shower,
and they're stopping wet. So then I had to go
get like some kind of laundry bag thing and fluff
the hundreds. And excuse me, are you saying that a
hundred dollar bill that may've been stuck to your butt
is somewhere in circulation that actually that's would actually be

(13:07):
a clean bill? Oh you think? Think how about how
dirty the other ones are if they've been on my butt.
I don't know how we got here. Well, you have
to ask about a gift on a bulldozer and what
to hell from? Always get it. It's gonna always get
disgusting when you're talking to me, But I can't. We
like it because you're real. You're real. Hey, yes, we're real.

(13:31):
And listen, folks, we have to take you even further
behind the scenes. Usually when we're talking to Luke, he
hasn't you know, his official publicist can't even talk because
I'm laughing so hard. His official publicist or maybe his
manager with him, Charlie. How often, and let's be honest
here does his publicist or manager come up to us

(13:52):
after speaking with Luke Bryant, saying Okay, you can't use
this part. You can't talk, We're gonna have to edit
this out. Well, yes, and they've often walked up during
the interview to say, can't use that. So he's sounded
control and that's why we love Luke Brian. He is
up for Entertainer of the Year. Our congratulations to him.
