Hello got everybody, Welcome to Crook and Chase, Nashville Chats,
Charlie and Lauren and here. Glad to have you with us.
And we're today are going to put the spotlight on
a young lady that we've had a few years ago,
and she was in the process of trying to get
her career just really launched. Okay, she's been in town
for about ten years. We're talking about making a guide
and I'm sorry I didn't say her name. We're talking

(01:48):
about making like everybody. But you know, the first time
we met her, no, I take that back. We interviewed her.
And then the next time we saw it was at
an award show and we were standing there talking with
Bob Kingsley, the late Bob Kingsley, everybody, and she walked
by and looking good and everything. Next time she came by,
she was carrying her high heels. She said, I can't

(02:10):
stand these things. She's I can't walk on these mad babies,
you know. So we knew right away that she was
just a good, good lady, just a nice lady, and
it's so good to see so many wonderful things happening
to her in last a couple of weeks. Okay, but
but what is the deal? What has been going on
with her the past ten years? She signed her record

(02:30):
deal in twenty eleven, she has put out several EPs
and nothing has seemed to hit. We found out in
this interview, this visit with Mickey Guydan, that you're about
to hear that there is a very good reason for that.
She had to, let's say, come to an awakening about herself,
and you'll find out how that happened. And once she

(02:52):
did the songwriting, her voice, her presence on stage just explode.
She is truly one of our superstars in the making.
When you listen to this interview, you understand a lot
of the meaning behind her music as well, which is
gluted in her new CD. Remember her Name, and we'll
begin the interview with an interesting observation about the newest

(03:15):
member of her family. I saw that Instagram post Mickey
where Daddy was holding him and his eyes were just fixed.
I mean he would I mean, he got us a
little binkie in and all of that, but he was
just unbelievably adorable. Are you Are you over the moon?
I am over the moon. The hard explosions and butterflies

(03:37):
on a daily basis are just too much. I took
him to see a go through a car wash for
the first time, and just to watch life through his
eyes is just so exciting. It just makes it so
much better. Let's talk about an important role played by Grayson.

(03:57):
You actually recorded All American when You're eight months pregnant?
Now number one? Recording it eight months pregnant. That's one
feet um second feet is you did it remotely from
your bedroom. Let's bring in the other two feets. Did
they kick you during the performance? Oh my god, he

(04:20):
kicked me And it took us a couple of times
to record it, because, um, when you're pright like, people
don't tell you that you don't have any room. So
by the time I was eight months pregnant, I was
only really drinking like white grape juice and juice because
I didn't really have any room from my stomach. But

(04:41):
I had eaten, and if I had eaten, I couldn't
sing because my diaphragm couldn't go down anywhere, so I
would have to stop the recording, wait for my food
to digest and come another day. How long did it
take you to do this one song? Then? Overall took
a few days. It's a day, yeah, because you also
have to eat, you know, like when you're pregnant. If

(05:03):
you don't eat, like it really affects how you feel.
So liable. Hey, listen, I just have to tell you,
mickey and all honesty, I cannot remember a time when
I have been so I guess overwhelmed and mesmerized by

(05:24):
the lyrics somebody has written and then the power of
the voice singing those lyrics. You described this album there's
somewhat of a turning point for you in what way?
This album was a point where I finally figured out

(05:44):
what I was supposed to say, because for the longest time,
you know, you're fed all is information, like we've got
to get this song and write a specific song for
country radio, and so I was chasing after this specific song.
And when I was chasing after this specific song, I
was losing my artistry along the way, because I was
writing a lot of songs like this even when I

(06:06):
first started. But then I stopped because I was like, Okay,
well that's not gonna work, and then I lost my artistry.
So the turning point was me finding that person again
and and and finally writing my truth and everything, like
if there's something I'm feeling, I'll say it in and literally,
very literal, Like I could say, Hi, how are you?
And I'd write that in the song. Well, is it

(06:28):
true that something your husband said to you kind of
snapped you into being I guess your real self? What
was it he said to you and didn't offend you
at first? Yeah, no, it did not offend me, but
it was my husband. I would go to this bar
in downtown Los Angeles, really cool, like old school looking bar,

(06:51):
and we were sitting in this like quiet area and
we were probably I didn't offend me because I had
a drink or two, so I was feeling all great.
But remember I asked him, I said, why do you
think country music isn't working for me? And he didn't
even hesitate. That was the hard part, Like he didn't
even hesitate. He goes, because you're running away from everything

(07:14):
that makes you different. He says, you're not writing music
true to you. And I was like, but it's such
a and and like I stopped and I was like,
that's exactly what I was doing. I was dressing certain
try to try to be accepted and trying to fit
this role when my role was only to ever be myself.
So you make the move to Nashville and then you

(07:37):
start writing like this, How long did it take you
to really start getting noticed? It wasn't just an overnight
think it's easy to come up with the formula, but
get everything to fall into place as a whole different ballgame. Yeah,
I you know, perseverance is a lot to do with
that and firm belief in yourself. But I wrote Better
Than You Left Me. That was the first song I

(07:58):
wrote in Nashville. Yes, And it took five years for
me to get it out. And I think there is
a lot of for some reason with women, because it
is so hard that a lot of times people overthink
your project and they overthink it, Oh is it Maybe
it's not. And then you recorded. I recorded Better Than

(08:19):
You Left Me like five different ways before it was
finally put out, Like it was that hard, and what
I had to do was real everybody in and shut
everybody up and listen to my heart. And it took
me a long time to do that. It took um.
I recently spent time with this artist. Her name is
a Spell, and she wrote that song American Boy with

(08:41):
Kanye West, and one of the things that she said
was your guts, your gut instinct, it's almost correct, alright.
So I'm sorry to interrupted. I'm curious in all these
years that you, you know, took five years to get
that first song out, that you're like, um, how many
times did you say I don't want to do this,
I'm gonna quit, I'm gonna do something else, and how

(09:03):
did you turn that around? I was saying that like
every year about like not like sometimes daily, but every
January once, like January seven, once everybody kind of came
back from the holidays. I would sit there and reassess.
And I remember I would sit there with my label
and be like, what do I need to do because

(09:24):
nothing is working. I feel like I want to quit,
And they would always reassure me like, don't quit, don't
quit on yourself. And so a lot of the times
the label was the ones that were like don't quit.
My husband was like don't quit. So I faced a
lot of that. But I'm a fighter. I have a
fighter spirit, and and I wasn't going to let it

(09:48):
go that easily. I'm glad you didn't because I have
to tell you, and I'm not I'm not trying to
be dramatic or anything, but I think that the lyrics
in this album and the way you sing them could
heal the dang world. So many of the songs are
global in perspective about how to come together instead of

(10:11):
being divided, and many of the songs are so very
personal to someone who has just maybe sitting in a
dark room feeling and like nothing. Yeah, oh my gosh,
So I just yeah, I mean, I just have to
know how emotionally writing all of this affected you. Did

(10:34):
it exhaust you, did it exhilarate you. You know, reading
the news and social media exhausted me. Writing songs and
writing with people I love and writing things that were
important to me energized me and gave me hope. And
I was just kept thinking, you know, yes, we need

(10:57):
all of these amazing, fun songs, but times it's nice
to know that someone feels and thinks the same way
that I do. And I think there's this moment, you know,
as as artists, like, we're still human beings first, We're
still a private citizen first. And and it's so important

(11:18):
for me to address what's going on and then get
through it. And and that's my life. That was this album.
I worked so hard. It was extremely hard. But the
hope is that I came out on the other side
of it all right, coming up when he is old
enough to understand the important message that Mickey would like

(11:41):
to see her son Grayson get from this new project. Plus,
there's one song on the c D that could be
described as a bit tipsy O wait for it, that's
next song. Crook and Chase Nashville chats with Mickey Guidan.
That time you got home from a week of double
shifts and your dog didn't recognize you. He hates me,

State Farm, they know it's important to ensure the things

That's why they have options like ensuring your car and
your home, getting you great rates on both. It's a
good idea to consider State Farm for surprisingly great rates,
like a good neighbor. State Farm is there call or

(12:48):
go to state farm dot com for a quote. Today,
I can post a picture that a girl that is
way skinnier than I am, a size to a size four,
the same exact picture, and I look vulgar because I'm thicker.
But if a thinner girl does it, it's not that

(13:08):
much of a big deal. And that's what I'm not
okay with because why Why Because I have stellulite, because
I have thick thighs, I can't do that. I can't
feel sexy in my own skin. And that's those are
the things that I want to break because there are
so many women like me, and I want to be
and represent us. You know, obviously there's always room for improvement.
I always want to look better, I want to work out,

(13:29):
I want to lose weight, but in reality, this is
the body God gave me, and I've never really been skinny.

(14:14):
young artists out there now who are watching your every
move and they may see and perceive a lot. But
what is one thing they might be missing in their perception?
Take us behind the scenes. Um, one thing I feel
that they might possibly be missing is the actual Like
anything that I say, I mean and that there is

(14:38):
action behind my words. So if I'm saying that it
is our job as artists to hold the door open
for future artists, I mean that, and I do that
in a sense where I'm finding other artists that are
new baby acts that don't know what they're doing, and

(14:59):
I'm I'm giving my time to them. I'm helping them
build teams around them so that they can have a
successful career. Like I actually do that. I call my
label mates checking in on them, like how are you doing?
This is how you might be able to get your
song through like it's a it's there's action behind my

(15:20):
words and that's one thing that live in your truth.
But but have action behind your words. Don't just say
it for the media, say it because you mean it
and I actually mean it. Wow, well let's take that
even deeper because earlier we were chatting about your bouncing
baby boy Gray just oh my gosh, what an adorable

(15:41):
little being. Um, when he's old enough to hear Mommy's
lyrics and to hear her sing this album, is there
a message from this body of work that means the
most to you that you would like him to really
get for his life? Um, I want to give him
a message of hope, that that life isn't fair, That

(16:06):
is going to be harder for others and it's going
to be easier for some. But that doesn't mean that
your dreams are not valid. And that means that you
give you do not give up at all costs. And
I hope that that is the message to never give
up on yourself ever, no matter who you are, don't
give up on your dreams and your hopes. Yeah, I

(16:29):
know you have a personal message to Lorianne on the
album called Rose Rose All Day. I mean that last time,
hold on model cork screw top box, use the fine
crystal out of the Did you ever use a straw,
by the way, for wine, Lorienne? Does? I absolutely, especially

(16:50):
if I just put on a nice little lipstick. Alright, alright, now,
I put ice. I have put ice in my come
listen Old Dominion I think was pretty much slashed on
their current single. I was on a boat that day.
Did you buy chance have a little sip during Rose
when I recorded it? Absolutely? I have. That is a

(17:11):
that is a tipsy vocal. I'm not kidding. I Am
not kidding everything. If you listen to it carefully, you'll
hear some like little laughs. And that's literally like I'm
like drunken laugh like a drunken slurred lyrics. Yeah, yeah, no, no, no,

(17:33):
let's go back to all American then, Charlie, Wait, wait, wait,
one more thing about the wine. I have to take
a confession really fast to Mickey, tell me that you
have done this, because I'm kind of ashamed that I have.
You know, sometimes late at night about midnight, you know,
our guests have left or whatever, and there's a bottle
of wine the left on the counter and there's you know,

(17:53):
maybe a little bit in there. I will actually take
it like a beer and drink the rest. Just did
not mess up another glass. I can't believe either of you. Okay,
no shame in all right, let me go. Let me
go back to All American when we're listening to If
we listen to All American, are we going to hear
anything they're indicating that Grayson has kicked you or anything

(18:16):
that he's kicked you or moved around during your performance?
Did you write much pregnant with him right when you
recorded that, maybe during the high notes where he was
like get out like this? What be quiet? I have
so many favorite songs on this album, and you know
what kind of just depends on the day in my mood.

(18:39):
I mean, I just love dancing around too different not
only just production, but of what it says. It just
makes you feel good about yourself and about being different
and unique. Is there a particular song on the album
that just you know, kicks you up a notch in
your own world. That is different. When I recorded that,

(19:00):
like it was like I wish you could have been
in the room when the three of us were recording.
And there's the there's a part in the song where
it says, when you got it, you got it, you
got it, you got it, you got it, and then
they say flaunt and we were literally there, all of us.
We were like flaunt, when you got it, you got it,
you got Like, this isn't a flunt, this is a flat. Well.

(19:24):
I gotta say I got such a kick out of
listening to the album all this morning. Prior to us,
I like, lay it on me and see all my notes.
I took all kinds of notes. Charlie and you you've
got so much going on. How do you keep up
with yourself? You've had a crazy year and a half. Girl,
I don't know. It's a miracle. It's a miracle. But

(19:45):
then I think I did an interview with Miley Cyrus
yesterday and I work hard, and she works harder than me,
so I could literally work harder. So no, she is
shown me that you know her first television appearance was
on our Music City Tonight show. She was two and
a half years old. Wow she is. She is such

(20:09):
an incredible artist in person like I was really surprised,
not surprised, but thankful at how real and kind she
is for someone of her caliber of artistry. She's a
kind person and that means a lot. Well, we can
say the same about me. Late on me is my

(20:30):
jam Yeah, I love Oh my gosh. Well, listen, we
know you have so much going on and lots of
things to get to for the rest of the year
and even beyond. But at some point I am going
to nominate you for President of the United States because
I just can I be a vice president and Dolly
pardon the president. How about that? That sounds great to me.

(20:54):
You know, my vote make the world a better place.
You know. Anyway, girl, think you're onto something, but it
scarcely hell out of me, Charlie, don't you worry. I
want to stay right over here. I don't need to
be running anybody's imaginary world. Yes, making you let me

(21:17):
tell you something. You are a class act, so wonderfully talented.
It is an honor for us to talk to you
about this new work. Take care of yourself, girl, I
love you too, Take care of you. Know. Her music
is really making a difference. It's getting it's strong a
lot of attention. When she did Black Like Me, that
brought attention to Mickey. She became the darling of awards

(21:39):
shows and this, that and the other. The music is important.
I think the Meani is from her heart, from experience,
and I think it's a worthwhile album to have and
listen to. Say. This is why I want Mickey gotten
to be president or at least vice president, as she
would rather be of the United States, because she doesn't
want that danger, you know. But you know, songs like

(22:02):
all American um the song different both from her album
Remember Her Name, are are very they're not divisive. They
bring people together and it's so refreshing to hear somebody
say some positive and kind words that celebrate our differences.
It's just tearing us apart all day, every day. And

(22:24):
the fun thing about taking you behind the scenes gives
you a new way of listening to that song All
American knowing that she's eight months pregnant and Grace's kicking
her at the same time. So anyway, my friend said
the new album is called Remember Her Name from Mickey
Guide and keep an eye on her. She's a rising
star and we have your country covered. We always do.
