(01:02):
and Charlie. Here, Crook and Chase. We have what's happening
right now in country music. Highlights from our Crook and
Chase show this past Weekend and it's we're calling it
um a confession extravaganza and we should have sworn them in. Really,
you know, we didn't know all this. No, this stuff
is a real Charlie. Yes, we're so. We're featuring Thomas
(01:23):
Rhett with a pretty big confession, Kenny Chesney with a
weird quirk. But we have our own that we admit
to Florida George Line what is really behind their creativity?
And Rascal Flats confessing to the worst part of their
job as country stars. Come on, it's a glamour job.
You know. What's what could be bad about being a
(01:44):
star and country music? You know? Oh yeah, Christ told
us one time, you know, I had to move. I
became a star overnight. I had to move in front
the house. His daughter called it the new f word, fame. Yeah,
just get used to it if you want it, get
used to it, you know. Okay, So Thomas Rett, let's
get to Thomas red one of our New Entertainers of
(02:07):
the Year alongside Miss Carrie Underwood for the Academy of
Country Music. Here's a guy who you would think was
born into country music. His dad is our friend and
the most famous singer songwriter read akin from the nineties. Yeah,
the nineties, so naturally thought, yep, you know Thomas Retch
just you know, born to following his dad's footsteps. Uh,
(02:31):
not so fast. What's your dad's involvement in the industry
that really caught your eye? And lad you, this direction
is the direction I always wanted to completely opposite. Um.
You know, growing up, for any kid and dad relationship,
you to kind of go the same direction as your
dad went, or you go the opposite direction. And uh,
you know, growing up, obviously, I couldn't avoid being around
it because when I was growing up, you know, my
(02:51):
dad was going a lot on the road and you know,
promoting his artistry stuff. And even when I was in
high school, he started to have hit songs left and right,
and so it always been a huge part of my life.
So I don't you know, I don't understand watching your
dad because he had a lot of fun and a
lot of success. And it's still having a lot of
fun and success. So why wouldn't you want that? What
(03:11):
turned you away from it? Um? I think it was
just wanting to do something different than he did. You know,
everybody always said you're gonna follow in your Dadd's footsteps. Man,
I don't know you're gonna follow your day's footsteps. Probably not.
You know, I honestly didn't know, um that I could
do what he did. Um. I always admired the fact
that he could get out and entertaining crowd and uh,
you know, looking back at home videos of me at
the age of three, Uh, there's a lot of them
(03:33):
of me and in uh in uh in cowboy boots
and diapers, singing chat chattahoochie and bootscooting and boogie and
and uh So it's kind of something I've been training
for since I was three and had no idea, you know,
because in every video I'm always the center of attention.
I've I've always not craved attention, but it was one
of those just one of those things where it's been
always kind of second nature to me. And Thomas Rett
(03:55):
when he was a little boy in those diapers, three
years old with a guitar, he was on a show
back then. Do you remember, Charlie barely You and I
carried him around back you know we used to have
Molly's Miley Cyrus too. Yeah, that's right, Miley. Yeah, she
was about two years old sitting on my lap. She
was fascinated because I used to wear I like to
wear scarves. I just love scarves, and she was fascinated
(04:18):
by my scarf. Oh, when you remember the baby carriage,
she had had a hell of Willie Nelson dollar. It was. Now, look,
we love Willie Nelson, but the Willie Nelson doll was
a scary looking thing for a two years. Well, but look,
and I remember that Jay Leno somehow got ahold of
that clip and he used it on the Tonight Show
(04:38):
when she was a guest. She had liked to thrill
with it. No no, because yeah, no, we gave that
clip to Letto. We thought we'd surprise her, and so
I watched the show that night, and you're right, Miley,
grown up Miley looked at Jay like, Okay, I'm gonna
get Chris. Well, we took a left turn here from
Thomas Red didn't. But yeah, that's a little surprising. You know,
(05:00):
you think it's an automatic that Thomas Rhett was going
to be. You know, I guess following in the first
SIPs of his dad didn't turn out that way. Okay,
next up, you mentioned a moment ago confessions we had
on the show and you'd be surprised. Sometimes some of
the biggest stars in the business have some of the
most unusual little quirks. I guess you could call them.
(05:20):
We discovered something really fascinating about Kenny Chesney thanks to
a particular line in one of his hit songs, We
are Stuck on the line, and American kids were a
little messed up that We're all, all right, we know
you love that line of song too, so I swear
we were thinking, Okay, how are we messed up? But
it's okay. So for me, I have this weird thing
(05:43):
that I cannot sleep, I cannot go to bed unless
the kitchen is clean, but my refrigerator is always disgusting,
But that's okay. How are you messed up? But it's okay.
Coupon freak, I spent a lot of time playing playing
the coupon games. I'm serious, And I'll go through him
and and update him as often as possible, just because
they don't send me into the store, but they save
me money when I do need the item he hasn't
(06:05):
cataloged in a book. Okay, so how are you messed up?
And it's how much time do we have? I mean,
I've got so much. I've got a list. Now we
got time. I can. You know, I can't sleep at
night unless I'm one of these people that that I
can't sleep unless the sheets are just perfect, you know
what I mean, Like like I if they're a little
(06:25):
messed pardon the pond. If the sheets are a little
messed up, I can't sleep at all. And so it's
it's I don't know where it comes from, but that's
a little messed up. I think, are these care bear
sheets or yeah, I graduated from that a couple of
years ago. But but I'm I'm messed up in a
lot of ways, you know. But but somehow it all
(06:46):
as my grandmother in Easton, as he says, you know, somehow,
Kenny Dollard just comes out and to wash. He wants
to talk about his family. There's such a big influence
up in East Tennessee and him growing up. Okay, here's
what I want to do. Since Kenny Chestney says he
has a long list of those kind of crazy quirks,
I want to sit down with Chestney. We open up
(07:07):
a bottle of his blue Chair Bay rum, and let's
just drink and let's talk about it. I'm charging, lie down, Kenny,
write a check. Kenny thought it was the funniest thing
that you're a coupon dude. You got your little coupon book.
Listen whenever. Okay, I'll mention. I go to CVS, you know,
(07:29):
we go to CVS Farms and all that, and they
always give me this receipt And you've seen what people
have done with decorate their Christmas trees with them. These
receipts are so long and everything. But I always check
it there and I have three one dollar coupons in
my car right now. You do, aren't you? Just they
want to give me a dollar off or five dollars off,
I'll take it. You're so frugal. I love that. Try
(07:51):
to keep up with that. That's It's tough to keep
up with the coupons though, really is. Okay, let's get
real now with Florida George a line. Do we have
to so people? You know that I know that, and look,
they're cool about it, but I know it just so
annoys them that people in the industry or maybe fans
try to label them and put them in a box. Well,
(08:12):
I mean what it was broke country and then they
were to pop or two rock, and then they wrapped
too much and then they went more country than they
were too country, these poor guys. So I think Charlie
you asked the best question of b K and Tyler.
You know, are they rebels or are they just being real?
(08:34):
We have worked with you guys since to Get Go,
and I know you're always experimenting and letting your sound evolve.
So would you say you basically are taking a chance
with every new project because you're always mixing it up
so to speak. That's a good question. I don't know
if it's taking a chance as much as us just
kind of doing our thing, you know, and continuing to,
(08:56):
uh show the world what we do and what we're into.
And you know, with every season of life, I mean
sometimes it's gonna sonically sound different, So an album can
sound different, and I think, you know, we want to.
You know, we love doing collaborations and with obviously with
other genres, so you never know what you're gonna get
as the years go by and as things evolve, and
so to just be open minded, uh, is where we're at.
(09:19):
I think it just comes down to is the timing right?
Is the song good? Is it? Does it? You know?
Meet all our expectations, and there's kind of a bar
in terms of quality what we want to put our
names on. So a lot of things factor in. I
don't know if we're at a place and I don't
mean this positive or negative where we're taking chances. I
think we're just having fun and doing our thing and
trying not to really label it or anything. Man, we're
(09:40):
just I think creatively, we're just super inspired and really
excited about the music we're making. And they should be
because everything they've turned out has turned into success when
you think about it and touring and all that. Of
course they're not touring, but at h at the break
point of COVID and all that stuff, they were one
of the biggest touring acts in the business. All right,
have a new album coming out, what is it Life
(10:02):
Rolls On? Coming up here in a few weeks, And
of course b K and Tyler have announced recently that
they are going to each do so low projects just
you know, follow some different kind of dreams, and you know,
I think that's a good thing. A lot of fans
are saying, oh, yeah, they're just really breaking up, and
they're saying so just yet, No, I think it's that
once you've been together that long. I mean, you and
(10:22):
I have done this as well, Charlie, with our television
and radio careers. You kind of get refueled by going
off and doing your own thing, your own special. The
most recent, of course, was Tyler and Tim McGraw's on
Others Today's show. That's right, that song undivided. Right. So,
of course, so with any new you mentioned a new
album project, any new album, you have to have a
photo shoot, right, So we're leading into Rascal Flats here. Um,
(10:48):
you know, whenever we mentioned Rascal Flat, we just sit
here and laugh. They these guys what great artists and
musicians and vocalists, but they are just playing funny, well
they are. And I saw Gary at the all. I mean,
last time I saw Gary, we were at the Cool
Springs Galeria and he just walks up behind Trace Actons
did the same thing, Charlie. But we started talking about
(11:10):
all the fun we have when we get together to
a chap with them, and I noticed something that that's
kind of a trend they have going with their albums,
you know. Yeah, So here's Charlie Chase giving Jay DeMarcus
a very hard time about Rascal Flats photo shoots and
all the album covers that I've seen, Jay is always
(11:31):
either looking at his feet or he's staring off at
something shiny that because he doesn't want to be. He
doesn't want to be. I don't see that there's an issue.
Has a photographer tried a squeaky toy or anything like that? Yeah,
I know they need Maybe that's what we need to do.
Can I be honest with you? I hope not. Photo
shoots are the worst part of what we do. They're miserable. Really, yeah,
(11:55):
it really is catered makeup are they don't cater and
many were The labels of budgets have cut way back.
So you bring your own sandwich and lunch, bring our
own sandwich in a lunch pail in the thermos. And
Gary makes it so enjoyable because they'll have us leaning
against the wall or something or sitting on a step
and Gary Andrew's breath of Really, you couldn't find one
(12:16):
of this pose already and all you can don't do
so many things with this lan turn. We do have
fun with each other. It's just the process of being there.
And let's t this shirt. That shirt doesn't look good
with the yep and you have to wait on lighting. Well,
so do they ever do that magic where there are
three different or four different photos where like maybe Joe
(12:39):
Don looks good and one heads and I don't think
my head's gonna look good on Jodan's body. It's not
at least put it on the right body. It sounds
like they have tried bad. So maybe maybe in a
weird way, we should be thankful that Rascal Flats has
done their last album because I just from that conversation Charlie,
(13:01):
don't you know their next album would have all their
body parts switched just because they like to be weird.
Look at the photographer too, for crying out loud. You
know that's the thing about Jay you're trying to I
guess they say, look moody and all that, but he
but he hit round the head, you know, he said,
don't you have one like this already? So that's just
part of being a star in country music, you know.
(13:22):
I like it that they're so honest and and look,
I understand we talked to country stars every single day
here on Music Row in Nashville, and we do like
to dig down into the parts of the business that
are just glamorous and glorious, but then you know there
are a lot of difficult things behind the scenes. But Charlie,
(13:42):
we found over the years as so many of the
stars are hesitant to talk about anything that bothers them,
anything that they might feel negative about, because they don't
want to appear ungrateful. I totally get that. But when
somebody like Jada Marcus and the Rascal Flat Skuys kind
of open up and they're honest about the things that
they just don't love aout being a star, I think
(14:04):
it's a great insight and we appreciate that on and
