But that enormous success put Chase on a musical road that he never intended. After "playing the game" for awhile, Chase has overcome tragedy, self-doubt, and the smoke & mirrors of the music industry. His new single "If I Were Rock & Roll" opens a very important door to an upcoming new album that he describes to Crook & Chase as hit "first true record".

crook and Chasers. That's the first time we've called anybody
a crook and chaser. That's okay? Was it chasing Jack?

(01:54):
Chasing tekid love that kind of thing. And we've been
called everything and cheese. Uh what they call me? Charlie Anne,
Charlie Anne. I've been Lorraine Croon. Lorianne Crack. Oh, that's
a funny thing too, because people would send her mail
and she would get it. Yeah. Lorianne Crack, Nashville Tennessee,
and you got it. It was Lorraine Crack and I

(02:16):
got it. It just said Loane Crack TNN Nashville and
I got it. Don't send any stuff like that. Okay, Anyway,
we digress, because today we are talking about Chase Rice.
This is how do I even begin to talk about
Chase Rice. He has had one of the most interesting, winding,

(02:36):
weaving career paths. He's a renaissance man you think about
I guess so when you think about it. He was
a toddler when he knew Brian Kelly. They grew up
together in Florida. Toddlers just you know, having a blast
on the beach and all of that. So long story short,
Chase moves to North Carolina with his family, working on
a farm, linebacker for the University of North Carolina, and

(02:59):
it for the NFL. Man. This guy was good, stats
were great and all that. But as with so many
country stars, Charlie, isn't this true? Injury sidelines? You had
an ankle injury and it really never made it to
the big leagues of football. We've heard that often, but
we've never heard of a country music injury preventing somebody
from playing the national Football League, true, and just thought

(03:21):
I'll point that out. But he did have you know,
he did have some backups in mind. As a matter
of fact, when he graduated the University of North Carolina,
he became part of a pit crew in NASCAR, which
is kind of cool. And I think last time we
were talking with him, uh, and I said, what kind
of roles do you have? And he had? He did everything.
If you look at a NASCAR pit crew, I mean

(03:44):
there's like ten or twelve guys come out there and
just swarm around the car. And he was one of
those guys. He changed positions several times recently, had a
chance to visit with his buddies too, So um that
that was a fun part two of it really haven't.
Then the whole time he was kind of you know,
his dad was his here and he was taking his
father's advice. He was playing guitar, he was singing, he was,

(04:05):
you know, hitting the club's, making a few dollars here
and there. And then all of a sudden, he hears
about Survivor television. He has a friend who works for
the network. He ended up with it. I think it
was it was Survivor in Nicaragua and Uh, he was
a runner up one like a hundred grand, and thankfully
that's the hundred grand where he said, Okay, he's loving

(04:27):
the music. He is going to move to Nashville and
reconnect with Brian Kelly and then they changed country music.
But before before that, I got to go back to
this Survivor because he was voted in the top ten
steamy ist male contestants in Survivor history. What is that all? Yeah,
I've voted for him about twenty times. Yeah, right, anyway,

(04:51):
for Chase Rice, you know, the last ten years have
been kind of up and down, you know, since Survivor
and all that sort of thing. A few record labels,
he's had some singles out and that sort of thing.
But you know this number one hit he's had recently
with Florida Georgia Line, drinking beer, talking God, Amen boy,
how strong that is? Yes? Indeed, so let let me
just kind of set this conversation up in that in

(05:11):
when he came to Nashville. A little bit after he
came to Nashville, Chase Rice didn't realize it, but he
in Florida Georgia Line were making country music history, doing
a little changing of country music history. By writing the
song Cruise because it kind of created its own genre,
this bro country. I know some people love it, some
people hey it, but hey, it happened Florida, Georgia line

(05:34):
catapulted to start him. But the problem is, you would
think that would have set Chase Rice on this amazing
career path. Instead, as you are about to hear, it
put him on the wrong path. And with the new
music that's coming out, especially with this new song if
I were rock and roll that we're about to talk about,

(05:56):
he is finally about to lease the album of his lifetime. Okay,
but as we begin our chat with Chase Rice, he's late,
Hella does. He's about twenty minutes late to our little chat.
Here's the reason. Chase Rice, how are you, man? What's
up you? Oh? Not much? How's how's the drive in

(06:18):
this morning? I mean we're all talking about construction and
traffic jams and everything in the city. Are you able
to handle all in? Yeah, I'm not gonna even blame
it on that. I'm I'm just straight up hung over.
Wait a minute, what did you say? Yeah, I'm straight
I had a Sunday fun day. I went to the
Titans game yesterday oh fantastic. Were there witnesses. We made

(06:44):
sure that we're not. Okay, well we'll turn dolls here,
but hey, okay, you've got the craziest, most wonderful song here.
I cannot believe all the stuff that you have fit
in to one tune here, all the good stuff NASCAR
football stars and stripes, rock and roll, Jesus, Dad's Johnny

(07:08):
Cash and the Girl that Got Away and the Girl
that Got Away. It's yeah, it's basically all the stuff
that if you were that you'd be the best of it.
You know. I was just sitting on my couch one
night and I kind of hit a wall last year,
you know, from social media and in COVID and so
many things, just everybody bickering at each other on social media, um,

(07:30):
the Trump presidency, Biden thing, everybody just at each other's throats,
and I just kind of hit a wall and I
got home that night. Now, I got off of social media,
um completely. I still have not been on it. I'll
participate with my manager and we we keep in touch
with people through that way, but I'm not physically able
to even go through. I don't have the passwords. And
that happened that night so I'm sitting there on board.

(07:52):
What do I do? Um? I can't sit there and
scroll through seven hours of of Instagram anymore. UM. So
I turned on the Springs documentary and he had a
song on his new album called if I Were If
I Were the Priest, and that's where I came up with.
My next thought was if I were Jesus, um, And
that's originally what it was called. And then I was like, nah,

(08:13):
but nobody's even close to Jesus. We're gonna stay away
from that. Was it a quick ride for you? It
was a couple of hours. It was just me by
myself on my couch and um, and I just wanted
to put in all the stuff that I haven't put
into songs in the last ten years, or haven't done
it enough. You know, you do music and you move here,
and I being a part of Cruz was a huge,

(08:34):
huge blessing for me as a writer. But it also
steered me in a direction that, um, it wasn't necessarily
what I moved to town to do. UM. I wanted
to write songs with acoustic guitar and and then all
of a sudden, track world has become huge and everything's
turning a little more pop um, which is fine for
whoever wants to do it, but that's not really what
I wanted to do. I just kind of got steered

(08:54):
that direction, and I was a kid not knowing what
I wanted to do. This as your first major release
as a solo writer, and now the usual routine as
a songwriter has to sell an artist on the song.
So being solo, you wrote it, did you have to
sell anybody on this before you cut it? I actually
pushed back on it. Um. I loved it, and I
the only person I had to sell on it with

(09:15):
Jay Joyce, who's producing my next record. UM. And he's
to me, one of the best producers of all time,
and so I had to talk to him about it
and he once he was on board the rest of it.
I pushed back on with the label management. Everybody was
adamant that this should be the next single because it's
just so me. It's so everything about this song is me.
I mean, I wrote it by myself. I put in

(09:35):
all the stuff that in my mind is some of
the most important things in my life. Um. And they
kept being and I was only pushing back because I
was like, guys, let's just make sure this is right.
We're coming off or drinking beer talking got a man,
We got momentum right now, we're we're having fun for
the first time in a long time. It just feels right. Um,
everything's moving full steam ahead. And I just wanted to

(09:56):
make sure that this was the right one and everybody
was adamant, and U been playing it live and people
have been freaking out. Just me and a guitar. So
the biggest optical was yourself. Yeah, and that was that
was like I said. And maybe that's just because I
wrote it by myself, so I question a little more.
I'm not real sure, but my main thing was I
just wanted to make sure it was right. I want
to make sure it was the right song at the
right time. Um. And I don't think there could be

(10:17):
a better song right now, you did it. How is
this song a glimpse of what is to come for you? Yeah? Well,
the whole record is a completely different thing that I've
ever done before. When we talked, we talked a lot
actually here in the last few months, which is awesome. Um,
but I've been I've been struggling to talk about drinking
beer talking about it. Man, I've been struggling to talk

(10:38):
about part three of my album and the album that
just came out, because I'm so fired up about what
I know is coming now, and I finally get to
talk about it. Um, But it's it's me and a guitar. Um,
it's me and other songwriters with guitars writing songs that way,
as opposed to writing with tracks and and all that
stuff you get going. Um. So we're making the song right,
and then I get to take it to j and

(10:59):
he makes the production right. I've produced a lot of
my own records with with other great producers in town,
and I've never had one producer on an album. So
this is gonna be a whole different thing you've ever
heard from me. Um, And to me, it's gonna be
the first real true record I've ever put out because
we're we one producer, we're going in at one time
to record it. We're not doing you know, I'm on
the road three days, come home, record two days, and

(11:21):
I'm back on the road. He wants me for three
straight weeks, and I was like, dude, there's no way,
there's no way I'm gonna be able to get you
three straight weeks. And you know, I'm wondering, is this
so when we hear this new music that you're talking about,
are we gonna be shocked? I think so, I really do. Um,
it's it's I think it's gonna be surprising to a

(11:42):
lot of people, um, in a in a good way. Um.
And I think a lot of people are gonna hear
me and be like, man, I knew that was him
the whole time. He just hadn't been doing it, and
now he's doing it. So it's yeah, it's it's gonna
be something I've wanted to do for ten years. Getting
back to the song if I were rocking well and
you say you've been performing it in on certain you
know the crowd is really digging and all that. You're

(12:03):
joining Kane Brown on his Blessed and Free tour next year.
But in the meantime, I think you've teamed up a
bud Light to do some live shows at small stages,
which seems to be the trend. We're all just kind
of building back up a little bit at a time,
trying to control it and be safe. Is that the
intent of these small tours like that? Yeah, we were
supposed to do it last year with bud Light. They

(12:25):
called him the bud Light Dive bar tours. I think
Garth did one, Lady Gaga did one, Kip did one. Um,
and that just obviously just never happened. But I to me,
you just said it. I think it's perfect timing. Now, UM,
come back slow, make sure that everybody, which I don't
understand fully. I mean you look at football stadiums all
across the country, they're full. Um. I don't understand why

(12:47):
music is the last one in line to be fully back.
But um, it doesn't bother me because I'm doing shows.
I'm doing shows the way that I started doing shows
in the first place, which was in small clubs. So
Chase her eyes having a blast getting back to the
basics of performing there sounds like that's also what he's
doing with the upcoming new album Charlie, maybe very stripped down,

(13:08):
maybe acoustic with his songwriting friends. I mean that seems
to be what he was hinting. Well, there he goes
something to look forward to. And of course at the
same time, he's gearing up for that big Cane Brown
tour that considered way I think of January, and he's
also gearing up for some hunting trips with Jack. You've
seen Jack yet, I'm not seeing j his tour dog,
not abody, it's his dog. Right. After a short break,

(13:31):
more about Jack the dog, Jack the drink, how to
party with Chase Rice and his life philosophy of keeping
his head down And in a matter of fact, do
you even have a half of that logo on it?

the tour dog. Is Jack gonna be touring with you?
Road dog? Yeah? Jack is uh. He's on the bus

(15:21):
with me all the time, and I'm this is a
saddle right here on Friday. Here's he bust Let me
a back up. Here's the band bust broken, and then
we're talking about Jack. The band is not bust broken.
There's no way that's ever gonna happen. Those guys are
animals more than Jack is um. But Jack is very
bust broken. He he knows when to go out, he sits,

(15:41):
He's a good dog. He's been in a bus since,
you know, since I got him six months ago. Um,
And now on Friday he goes to train, you know,
bird dog training. He's gonna be there for six months
and I can see him whatever I want. I'm gonna
go down there a lot. I'm gonna be basically living
in Georgia this fall. You sent him to summer camp.
I'm sending him to summer camp six months. He's gonna
be But when he comes back, he's gonna be a

(16:03):
really good bird dog. And you won't have any sparrows
in your front yard, no, get them all. Hey, Okay,
here's something I have to know as we sit here today, Chase,
So you have admitted that you are recovering a little
bit from having a great, big fun party yesterday. So
if Charlie and I were to hang out with you
and have a party, what would that be like? What

(16:25):
would we be drinking, what would we be doing? What's
it like partying with Chase? Rice? Well, yesterday was out
on the town. So we went to the Titans game
and then we went to a new place in town
called I guess it's not new. I can't remember what
it was called to be honest, But then we went
to twelve thirty club was the new one. We found

(16:45):
your way home. It's okay, but yeah, I mean these
days through last year and being home a lot, the
my favorite thing to do would be us hanging around
a fire. I got awesome little fire bit at my house,
get some barbecue going, get some steaks, and I got
a bud Light. Would be heavy on the menu. Um,
I love bud Light. If it's gonna be beer. I

(17:06):
love Canteen. These new Avoca sodas that just came out
with those things are unbelievable. Um. And then you obviously
got the Jack and Jack and whatever you want with it.
Just Jack Daniels has has always been a go to
for me. Um. I'm a big tequila guy lately too,
so we could dive into the tequila. Um. And to me,
that's just everybody's like. I also think it's a lie.

(17:27):
I think people lie about it, but they're like, yeah,
tequila is the only alcohol. It's an upper not a downer.
I'm like, okay, would you would you anticipate any survivors
at this party? Depends on how strong your will is, Dude,
I would not survive all of that Hey, you need
to know. I'm sitting here and on my head, I

(17:50):
have my h D eu cap on. I love that thing.
Head down eyes a M. I know that's that's a
big thing for you. Um how has that carried you through?
You've been through a lot of stuff, as most people
have in their lives, especially this past year. Um, how
has head down, eyes up continued to carry you through? Yeah?

(18:11):
It's just a long game thing for in my mind,
it's like, I feel like there's so many people that
you know the biggest thing that we can do against
ourselves is to compare ourselves to other people, because that
then there you're are you always gonna lose, You're gonna
find somebody who's better than you everything. Um So for me,
it's it's been a long play of like all right,

(18:33):
head down, eyes up, forget about these people are telling
you're awful. Forget to forget about these people whore telling
you're great. Um, if you start listening to the noise,
no matter if it's good or bad noise, you're not
gonna be focused on on what you do. And that's
and for me it's music. You know. I I've had
friends that have blown by me in my in our
careers and instead and the natural thing to do is

(18:55):
be jealous and be like, why can't that be me?
But with that mentality of head down, eyes up, man,
for about that you need nothing but happy for him.
That's awesome for them, um, And then that that can
allow me to focus on what I gotta do to
be the best version of me, whether it's music or
just being a good person or whatever it is. And
that's what head down, eyes up it's all about. So
it's been huge for me. Yeah, just keep moving forward. Man.

(19:16):
By the way, meant to ask you since when we
last talked, I think you were going over to hang
with your former crew at the NASCAR race. Did you
get a chance to do that when I came in,
I did. Yeah. We Uh it was Kyle Larson and
it went in the race and I was actually with
him a couple of nights ago, which was cool. And uh, yeah,
he's got half of my crew that I worked with
um on his car on the five car. So yeah,

(19:38):
I saw a bunch of them during the NASCAR race
week and uh, I'm seeing a lot of NASCAR guys
around these days. It's it's pretty cool. And like I said,
if I were a NASCAR man going around around you.
You know, I've been number three and that's how I
start rock and roll. So well, there you go. Now, now,
what what was your role on the crew? I mean, like,
if Florian had a flat, could you pull over and
change it? Like seconds and you give me my crew
and the right equipment. It could be about of seconds. Seconds. Um,

(20:02):
But now it's uh. I was a jackman at first,
and then I was a rear tire carrier who indexes.
Tough job. Now while you're changing the tire, would you
also wash the car for me and clean out the
back seat? Uh? Yeah, absolutely, you just gotta tip me
a little more. Okay, you got it. Okay, the next
song will be cold and hell when that happens. Yeah, okay,

(20:26):
So what a teaser chase? What did teaser? Can't wait
to hear the new music and for the time being,
we are digging the new one. Awesome. It's always good
talking to you guys. I've loved it. We've had a
lot of good stuff lately. We do appreciate that. And
one final tip, uh, and like at the end of
a fun day Sunday, before you go to bed, if
you can remember, take a couple of aspurn You'll be

(20:47):
surprised how that'll work. Wake up better as burning about
a two liters of water? No, no, just a couple
of aspirings all you need to take. Go to bed,
get up, and you're you won't even remember the day before. Well,
I'm gonna try that. You I try to chug chug
a gallon of water. So I'm gonna do it your way.
You have to get up and pee around there o'clock,
you know what. Chase her yourself. But hey, we'll see

(21:08):
you soon, Okay, talking to Well, it wasn't that an
interesting conversation with Chase any right all over the place. Well,
I can't you know, I think I was thinking back.
Can you imagine him and Brian is toddlers in Florida.
That's where the trouble started, right there. What if they
were writing songs at the age of five? Oh, I
don't know, but but I'll tell you know, I gotta

(21:29):
tell you this. I think the pandemic and people, you know,
being sort of forced to stay inside and do this,
that and the other has brought out a whole new
side of creativity for the artists here in Nashville. And
includes Florida, Georgia Line and Chase Rice and all these
guys sitting around fires talking God, drinking beer. You know, amen,
that sort of thing. Um, I hear that, and I

(21:51):
think we're going to hear more of that when his
new album comes out. Well, and you know, I think
the uh, the drama of the pandemic has forced a
lot of us in a very good way to realize
time is short. You have no idea what tomorrow will bring.
And in the case of Chase Rice, as he said,
you know, he's just tired of doing what everybody expects

(22:13):
him to do. He was ready to do the music
that he has wanted to do for more than ten years. Now.
It's starting with the song if I were rock and roll,
and I think we will see the big bang, so
to speak, with the upcoming album next year. Chase Rice
is a good guy. He says, he's up in downs,
but he's doing really well right now. Hey. As a
matter of fact, we have your steamy country covered Top
