and Charlie Here Crook and Chase Nashville chats and it's
you know, it's just what we do. Will you take
you beyond the music into the lives of the stars,
(01:26):
And sometimes it's shocking to us. Yeah, and that's what's
happening today because we're starting with John Party. Imagine him
in the kitchen last night. You know, the last time
we saw John, uh, he was talking about the fact
that he wanted to be like John Travolta, you know,
dance on the dance floor now because you know, he's
known to do the music that everybody's new in the
(01:46):
boot scooting and all that stuff too. And we asked
him about dancings. Yeah, I got you envisioned like a
John Travolta thing. The crowd spreads and just watches me,
you know, and whoever I'm dancing with, and we just
you know, do it. He likes it. All eyes on him,
smooth moves. Well, I would say not so much at
home in the kitchen. I'm gonna say, awaiting the stage
just a different story, right, okay, And we've talked about
(02:09):
it a little bit before John Party has had his
own show. I guess it's online to CMT his Party Time,
P A R D I Party Time. And I just
love the fact that they just turned their phones on
he in summer and just recorded all the stuff happening
at their house. And so John decided, well, first of all,
(02:31):
let me back up and say, no, matter what he's doing,
whether he's in the kitchen, whether he's in the yard
where he's messing around with the dogs, what does he
always have in his hand? Charlie, I have not you.
He always has a drink, a drink. He always has
(02:51):
a glass of If you want me to say, a
drink or a booze or what. No, that's okay, but
I think we asked him about it, and in fact,
there is Oh my gosh, if I don't know, if
you can go back and watch these previous episodes. There
was one episode where he is on his back porch
in the morning after having can we say over drunk
(03:14):
the night before? Is that a word? Over drunk? He
was overserved the night before at his own home, and oh,
he looks rough sitting there in the morning sun, and
he looks like he's in pain. His eyes are glazed
over like a donut from the whiskey. Yeah. So, anyway,
one of my favorite parts of the Party Time show
(03:35):
was him cooking and in the kitchen, Summer is recording
this dish that he is making. So I was really
excited to ask him about his shall we say, his
talent or lack thereof in the kitchen. And my perception
is he needs some help, Mama, right, John, Party needs
help in every sense of every task like this. I
(03:58):
thought it was fun to see you cook, King, But
now you know a lot of celebrities have, you know,
big cooking shows on the cooking channels. Would you ever
just do a cooking show? Oh no, oh no, see
I'm the Sioux Chef they see. That's that's all I'll cook.
But Summers behind the camera tell me what to do,
because Summer is a great cook, and Summer really wants
(04:20):
to do a cookbook and just have something in cooking
down the road. That's like a goal of her because
she loves cooking. And that's another a great thing about her.
She she loves to cook. Well, what was the best
thing that she helped you make, I would have to say, mm,
I don't know. I mean that that chicken was really good.
(04:41):
I guess for me, Summer has really taught me about
the Insta pot, and the Insta pot is amazing. I
don't know if you guys got one. It's a pressure
cooker one and it's so good. It's and it's like
half an hour. You got chili and it's great. And
so she's been making you know, we had chicken noodle soup,
(05:01):
We've had chicken tortilla soup, and it's just been really cool.
And I always have a lot of like I'm always
working on the back forward you if you call it.
And I got a couple of helpers, and so we
always have a little bit, you know, extra people to
feed for dinner, and it just helps with stuff like that.
You know, give him a vegematic and just step back
(05:23):
and watch. Oh that is hilarious or what was it?
Oh gosh, what was that thing? That device that to
make salads and it just cut up everything. You know,
you could throw celery in it and it wasn't a
salad spitter, but it would spit out radishes and things
(05:43):
like salad shooter, I said, spitter, I'm sorry, that's terrible.
Wait a minute, Wait a minute. Can you imagine John
Party with a salad shooter? He would be shooting vegetables
all over the house on purpose. All right, well, we
take you behind the scenes there John Party's house. Let's
go behind the house over in Green Hills. We're gonna
(06:04):
reminisce just a little bit here with Chase Rice. Okay,
because Chase is at the top of the chart now
with his buddies Florida, Georgia, Line, Brian and Tyler and uh,
it's sitting here. Uh we're talking to It's got such
a hook to it and you can't help us sing
along to it after you hear it. And uh, we
(06:24):
were we were curious about when they first got together
because they've been friends for a long time. A lot
of people don't realize that maybe this thing. Hey, they're
big stars getting to the other for this collaboration, But
they've been friends for a long time, and we wanted
to find out about the early days, you know, before
you know they became known as they are. In Charlie,
you have a you have a way of finding out
(06:46):
these details. What can you share about. We'll call him
the good old days when you and Brian and Tyler
were first working together as songwriters, before all this stardom
mess came along. That's what it is. What it is, Um,
It's which is another reason why I think life's so
fun right now, because when you get thrown into it,
(07:07):
especially those guys with Cruise, And that's what it was.
That's We weren't trying to write hits back then. We
were just trying to write songs that we loved and
uh and cared about and all we knew how to do.
And then all of a sudden, Cruise comes along and
everything it blows up in all of our faces and
the best way but you don't know how to deal
with that when it happens. But it was, that's what
it was. It was. It was sitting around a fire
a lot in the plates all the fun house right
(07:27):
off of Benham Avenue over in uh Green Hills, and
we had a fire pit in the backyard. We typically
go to the bar. They had their girls girlfriends, Um
I had my girlfriends, and we'd have our group of
people come over and and they had a couple of
producer buddies, songwriter buddies that some um earned town still
some of them are not, and we'd all just sit
(07:49):
around and hang out because we couldn't afford to be
at the bar too long. Tend Roof on the memory
and was their beers were too expensive for us back then,
because we'd go in for one or two, get some
friends and head back to the house. And that's what
it was. It was pretty simple, Okay, he said it
kind of fast. But he was talking about going to
the Tin Roof on Demombriant, which is just a couple
of blocks up the street from us. So I got
(08:10):
on the Tin Roof website, Charlie and I looked it
up and right now, no, I don't know what the
prices were back then when he was talking about several
years ago, but right now, if you just want to
get a basic goal PBR three dollars, which yeah, and
so I mean, if you're struggling musician, that's what triple
a beer would cost. If about it at the grocery
store or whatever. Their most expensive single beer was like
(08:33):
a Belgian artisan beer that is six dollars. You know.
That's the way hits are made around here in the
beer joints. Uh, there's a place not too far from us,
Bobby's idle hour over here. They move locations recently because
of some construction here on the road. But you'd see
songwriters hanging out in there telling stories. Next thing you know,
(08:54):
you see somebody writing something down on a napkin. And
that's sometimes how these big hits are born. It's fascinating
how things come together in this town. It's it's it's magical.
And I've often heard to say, what time do you
committed the office? Oh, I'll get there around eleven, just
time to go lunch, and then they never come back.
That's pretty much the way things work around here on
the road. Oh yeah, the famous three martini lunch. But
(09:17):
it is true in Nashville, you never know where you
might see a star. And in fact, if you were
living in Nashville about ten years ago, you may not
have known it, but Dustin Lynch may have been on
your lawn. That story and a surreal moment happening for
(09:38):
Travis Denning. When we come back at Metro, Bye T Mobile,

and this a Crook and Chase Nashville Chats, and we
are telling you about some of the surprising things that
well may have been in your past you didn't know it,
but especially when it comes to Dustin Lynch. Uh, we
(11:24):
talked about the magic that happens in this town. Imagine
if you look out in your yard and you see
somebody like Dustin Lynch on a riding lawnmower, you think, well,
who's that? He's good looking? Yeah, okay, but it was
Dustin Lynch used to owe yards in this town. And I,
you know, we we felt we were fascinated to know
(11:45):
that he was pursuing his dream while having a pretty
serious and hard grueling day job. Yeah. So this is
Dustin's story and being the yard game here in Nashville.
Before I started, who were at at this level? I
was cutting grass for a living in Nashville. And so
now I don't like to cut yards because I did
(12:07):
it for so long. It doesn't bring me pleasure that
I used to but I'll and I'll pay somebody to
cut my grass in my house, but then I'll go,
I'll refuse to pay anybody to do maintenance on my farm,
like bushog or anything like that. So you're pretty good
at landscaping, and oh man, I loved it. Yeah, it
was great for me. It was a great way. I
(12:27):
guess it's just the droninus of a mower, being on
a mower, and I had the radio, you know, noise
cancelation headphones, and I would listening to radio shows and
really dissect songwriting from the mower um because that was
the point where I was starting to write songs a
lot in town to do open Mike Writer's nights when
I was cutting grass, so I was constantly thinking about
(12:47):
how to finish the song and how to write songs.
And I remember certain um interviews, you know, that would
come across the radio and I'll be working. That really
taught me something about songwriting or recording and just following
those artists. There are people in this town who might
not realize that they had a future major country music
star more on their yard. Yeah. You know, I think
(13:10):
about every time I drive up and down in these
bars that I grew up playing in and I see
guys and girls, you know, in there at two pm.
No one's in the bar, but they're strumming an acoustic
guitar solo on stage, singing a song covering one of
my songs even and I go, that's cool because you know,
twelve years ago that was me. Yeah, oh my god.
You never you never know where you're gonna find a
(13:31):
star in this town. Uh. You know. Often of course,
down on Lower Broadway and some of the bars, you're
going to see some of the big acts of the future.
You don't know it yet, but they're down there and
giving it their best and hoping for their best shot.
But that's the last place I think I would look
for somebody to become a major start. They're running around
the in the yard. Well, now think about it. Some people,
(13:53):
and this was years ago, had their house painted by
Blake Shelton. There were men, these stars who did construction work.
I mean John Party when we talked about earlier, was
one of them. So here in Nashville, you could have
had your house painted by Blake Shelton, your house built
by a star, and you could have been mowed by
(14:15):
Dustin Lynch. Well, you just never know about the magic
in this town. Okay, speaking of magic. When I first
moved to Nashville back in seventy four, of course you
were already here. The Volunteer Jam had just started. That
was the very first year of Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam.
I was not there the first one, but I attended
(14:36):
so many after that. I hosted a couple of things.
I remember working with a little Richard down there, and uh,
a couple of the famous actors who came in. Christofferson
was there, all kinds of people over the years. The
Volunteer Jam, of course was significant in this town just
because it was Charlie Daniels. Charlie was such an icon
(14:57):
in this town, loved by everybody. And of course when
we lost Charlie, everybody said, well, what's going to happen
to the volunteer Jam. And I think I'm very proud
of the fact that they am very pleased with the
fact that they had a lot of people step up
and say, we're going to continue this jam, and this
one especially is going to be a tribute to Charlie
(15:18):
in his honor. It absolutely is now Charlie as you are,
And I are sitting here talking. The jam is about
to happen in a couple of days, and I'm not
going to go through the entire lineup because we would
be here until next week. I mean Alabama, Gatlinber, I mean,
everybody is going to be there, including this guy, Travis Denning,
and we're going to let him describe what a full
(15:41):
circle moment this jam is going to be for him.
You get to be involved in that Volunteer Jam, What
does that mean to you? I mean, it's full circle.
For me. The first time I ever stepped foot on
stage was I was fourteen years old and it was
at the Volunteer Jam tour in Salt Lake City, Utah.
(16:01):
So for me, it's a it's a huge culmination of
you know, my the southern rock roots I grew up
loving and I can't wait to be a part of that.
But for me, it's very personal and just finally getting
a comfull circle and do it again. How did you
get on stage at Volunteer Jam? So, my my dad
grew up with a guy named Chris Hicks who plays
(16:21):
with the Marshall Tucker Band. He's been with them a
Marshall Tucker for I think about twenty years now, and uh, yeah,
they came through town and we went to the show.
And this was obviously when the Volunteer Jam toured and
it was the Outlaws Marshall Tucker and and Charlie Daniels band,
and yeah, I brought my guitar. My dad's like you
you and kristin jam backstage or whatever. And I didn't
(16:43):
realize he had worked it all out. I got there
and Doug Gray came in said, you know the chords
and can't you see I said, yes, here, He said, well,
get your guitar strapped on to meet us side stage.
I'm like, oh lord, this is crazy. But it was
really awesome. Definitely. Uh. It sucks that Charlie won't be there,
but it'll be an awesome celebration, you know. I think
(17:04):
it will be an event to remember. I talked to
a few people who are our book to be at
that big event, and they're saying that they are fully
expecting to feel the presence of Mr Charlie Daniels right
there on stage with him. Oh um. He gave me
one of his bows after my grand Old Lobbry debut,
and uh, I keep it in my house so I
(17:25):
have a little piece of Charlie all the time. Honestly,
can you play fiddle with that thing? No? I would
first off the answers, no, I cannot play fiddle. But secondly,
I like, don't even touch it. I just don't want it.
I don't want to mess with it. I'm afraid it's
gonna fall apart one day, and I really hope that
doesn't happen. It sounds like, in a way, Charlie Daniels
helped change your life. He changed mind. When I was
(17:48):
in high school, I was a lead head. I was
a lad Zeppelin freak. Well, my boyfriend took me to
a volunteer jam and when I saw a c dB
and Marshall Tucker band, that was it. And the reason
I'm sitting here talking to you and in country music
to this day was because of Charlie Daniels and the
volunteer jam. So we got a connection there, Travis. That's
(18:10):
pretty awesome. It is awesome to sit here and think
how Charlie Daniels changed so many people's lives. I mean,
even the artists that he brought along with him, the
other artists he inspired. I mean, how has Charlie Daniels
affected your life over the years. Charlie Chase, Uh, Well,
I think it was basically the connection with his management team.
(18:32):
Joe Sullivan was his manager when I first moved to town,
and Joe was in radio and was instrumental in getting
me to Nashville. So and I remember one of the
first concerts, uh when I saw char Charlie Daniels in Knoxville.
Uneasy Rider was a hit. We're backstage and my wife
Karen remembers this because she said, um, I see what
(18:53):
was She said she was backstage and she had just
gone to the restroom or something, and and was we've
come back, got to meet me and we're going out
to the front, and Charlie saw her and he said,
and who do you belong to? Honey? She never will
forget that. And we saw Charlie at an anniversary dinner
at Morton Steakhouse here in Nashville, and Charlie was next
(19:16):
to us with his family celebrating something. And Charlie sent
over an autograph bottle of champagne for Karen's birthday, which
we still have and we are never going to open, yeah,
because that's pretty special. And then I have a a
fire on the Mountain T shirt autographed by Charlie Daniels. Okay,
so you want to hear something kind of crazy. So
(19:38):
the last time I interviewed Charlie Daniels, he gave me.
He just gave me one of his T shirts from
his merch site, you know, and I is It's this big,
very soft, comfy T shirt. And so the first time
I just wore it to bed because it was so soft.
(19:59):
I woke up the next morning and that was the
morning they had announced that he had passed, and I
was wearing that shirt. And that was the only time
I took it off, and that's the only time I've
ever worn it. But it was just so special to
me that he's sort of given me that just for
some fun, and then I happened to be wearing it
um when he passed. Just sort of either just a
(20:19):
strange little story. But you know, we all feel a
connection to Mr Charlie Daniels. Friends. If you want the
connections to the country music stars, well we're right here
because we run into them all the time here on
