Speaker 1 (00:00):
Direct from Hollywood with Ryan Seacrest. Martin Scorsese's nineteen eighty
three crime Kingpinsagat Scarface starring al Pacino, is considered an
all time classic today by most cinophiles and movie critics,
but the movie wasn't received the same way when it
hit theaters in nineteen eighty three. In fact, it was
almost universally panned in reviews, and while it did fairly
well at the box office, it wasn't a smash, and
when it left theaters many thought it would just bade

into obscurity. But al Pacino is very clear about what
he thinks kept the movie relevant, lucrative, and helped turned
critical opinion hip hop. He tells the WTF podcast. The
audiences liked it, the critics took a while, but hip
hop just got it. They understood it, the rappers embraced it,
and then next thing you know, VHS came out and
more people got to see it. Plus the movie was
getting rapped about on their records, and then it just

carried away and it kept going and going. Al Pacino
on hip hop embracing Scarface rappers from jay Z to
Wu Tang to Scarface himself, who took his name from
the movie. All gave love to the film and a song.
Al's new memoir Sonny Boys out now that's direct from Hollywood.
