Speaker 1 (00:00):
Real Fun with Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Mike's are now live. Mario Lopez here back of the
mix for the next few hours. Our mentions are now open,
so send your questions and comments my way. Today's guest
is Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs. He just made a
new documentary called Something to Stand For. We're gonna find
out all about that. But up next, I'm gonna fill
you in on my big family vacation you're on with
Mario Lopezoh, Mario Lopez and the whole family is feeling

(00:26):
a bit refreshed after our vacation down in Mexico. We
were in beautiful Cabo San Lucas, which was described as
palm springs with a beach basically a beach you can't
really go into. They have the strongest undercurrents. They say
that's where the world ends, because you'll go maybe five
feet out and then it drops like a mile. It

(00:46):
is crazy to draw and you can't swim in certain beaches.
You have to go to other beaches where it's a
little more of a bay because it's so strong. They
don't allow it. It will pull you out, and they've
had accents that's awful. I'm not really selling hobo. So
I'm so relaxing and I'm stressful at all. I'm so
used to just jumping in the ocean. That's the one

(01:07):
little thing that kind of bothers me. But other than that,
great family time was just my wife and I and
the kids and Sonny's birthday. Sonny's birthday, he's now five
years old? Did we skip four? I feel like we
skipped me. Well, he's a COVID kid, so he was
kind of hidden for a couple of years, right, and
that's why he's, you know, taking a minute to kind

(01:28):
of to get his wheels kind of going. But he's
all he's all rare to go. And it was nice spending.
I spend a lot of quality time with my daughter,
which you got to cherish at this point in her life.
But all at all, we're happy to be back.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
More Mario Lopez. Coming up.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
A Mario Lopez. Let's take a look at what's on
TV today.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
What do we got Netflix Premiere's The Boyfriend. Nine guys
move in together and run a coffee truck while looking
for love.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Nine guys. Wow, I'm not assuming they each have their
own bedroom either. That's a big one. Maybe they do.
We have to check it out.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
But it's a TV show, it's not realistic.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Probably, Yeah, that's okay.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Paramount Plus has Melissa Ethridge I'm Not Broken. Five inmates
from the Topeka Correctional Facility write letters to Ethridge, which
she uses to create an original song huh. And Freeform
debuts Sasha Reid and The Midnight Order, a doc about
a group of women who use data and criminal psychology
to find answers to some of Canada's most serious crimes.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
I don't why I'm laughing.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
This was sort of like the what was the cat killer?

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Was an F bomb in Oh Yeah, yeah, the one
where they were like finding the people that tortured the
cats or something the kittens, yes, which like these American
Internet keyboard salutes.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yes, And now Canada is getting into it, you know
what I mean. If you're gonna have a hobby, that's
a pretty good one. Mario Lopez here, we got a
new message in our inbox. We love hearing from you,
a courtesy of the talkback button. This one it's from
Bill Davis out in Buffalo. What's up Bill?

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (02:56):
And it'll be sixty this month. Mario, how about a
little bit to Moore's Day in the Time, So cameo
Shaka Khn, slick Rick, Buffalo's own on grown Come on man,
the old Lady's funk.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Hey Bill, I like your style player, That's what I'm
talking about. And you can hear all those artists on
the R and B throwbackstations on the iHeartRadio app And
he gave a shout out to Buffalo z oone when
he met slick Rick, he met Rick James. And if
anyone else has something they want to share, just press
the talkback button at the bottom of the Alandy Mario
Lopez and Cardi B is accused of being too greasy wither.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Beats on with Mario Lopez Hollywood Butt.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
So pair of producers are assuming Cardi B. They say
she stole a beat for one of her new singles
in Pay for It. The original song Greasy Frybread, became
popular when it appeared in the show Reservation Docs. Oh

(04:01):
I Get now, They say Cardi lifted it for her
single enough, Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, okay Ooh that that
is really really, really similar. It doesn't seem like there
wasn't even like a change of the beat. That's in

(04:23):
like the same beat like just she's just remixing it.
I'm gonna be interested to see how it all plays out.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
More Mario Lopez coming up, but a Mario Lopez here.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
New Music Friday comes a little early this week. Katie Perry,
who's been looking very sassy in a lot of her
pictures she's been posting, is premarying her single Women's World.
Clips have already been going viral on TikTok. It's from
our first album in four years. We're gonna be debuting
it on Thursday. But right now, let's get back to music.
Mario Lopez here, and we find a reason to celebrate

(04:52):
something every single day. Today it is National sugar Cookie Day.
I'm like, cann miss sugar cookie. I wouldn't necessarily request one.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
I just bought sugar cookie dough really and I've been
eating that.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Ooh no, It's one of those things like if it's there,
I'll eat it. But I'm not like, oh, get me
a sugar cookie. You don't want the go to cookie.
It's not the go to cookie. But but you don't
throw it out either. You're a Mario Lopez. Time to
get some of your questions and comments on the tweet stock.
What do we got?

Speaker 3 (05:18):
This one is from at timber Ka. Just heard the
Nina Dobrev interview. You never have messed with bikes? Do
you even know how to ride one?

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Player? I added the evening player.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Uh, timber Ka, when you say bikes, I assume you
mean motorcycles.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Correct, Yeah, I think because Nina Doebrev was on a
dirt bike, right right.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yes, I do know how to ride one, but I
don't ride motor I rode JRT bikes when I was
a kid a little bit, but I didn't really like
them or street bikes. Just because I'm not exaggerately want
to say everyone I know that has had a motorcycle
has had an accident. And my cousin Ralphie, when we
were kids, had a really bad accident. We thought he
was gone any of there's damaging his leg and that

(05:57):
scared the crap out of me. And I was real
close to them, or I'm still close to them, and
I was like, you know what, forget motorcycles, because it's
not even about you. You got you gotta worry about
someone else not paying attention, especially here in California. Maybe
if I was in Nebraska, big open cornfields or something
that'd be different. But there's too much going on here,
especially La and.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
What about bicycles.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Bicycles and come straight with bicycles, I can ride by
the way. I would even ride those really in the
street too much either, it's more mountain bike.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Oh, Kyle rode his bike and here he almost gets
hit daily exactly.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
More Mario Lopez coming up.

let's get back to the music Jo Mario Lopez and
We've got some celebs turning a year older today. I'm
gonna try to guess the agents who do We got.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Fred Savage from The Wonder Years, The Princess Bride.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Fred I'm gonna say is forty eight. Forty eight is cracked?

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Hey, from the people versus Larry Flint, Kurt Cobain's widow
Courtney Love.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Courtney Love, I'm going to say fifty three sixty wow.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
So Kirk Cobain, I'm assuming this, okay, So yeah, that
makes sense.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
I was Can you imagine see something you're old Kurt
Cobain right now?

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Wow, that'd be crazy.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Tom Hanks from Big Forour Scump, the one on the
Island with a volleyball All day of movies.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
It's around two time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks. Tom
Hanks got to be sixty three sixty eight wow, okay,
Tom Hanks.

Speaker 3 (08:08):

Jimmy Smith's Jimmy Smiz got to be sixty one sixty nine. Wow,
he looks good.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
Okay, Mario Lopez will be right back.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Mario Lopez here has some quick buzz for you. The
summer of family movies continues to make bank at the
box office. People are really loving Family of Fair which
I love to see. Despicable Me four has earned more
than one hundred and twenty five million in its first
week in North America. Great news for Universal and more
than a quarter billion around the world. And the budget

(08:41):
was only one hundred million, so they made it back
in one weekend. How about that. By the way, that's
about half the budget of a Pixar movie. Good for them. Meanwhile,
speaking of Pixar, Inside Out two has become the fifth
highest grossing animated film of all time. Wow, with one
point two two billion. My kids saw it this past weekend.
They're really like, what a Mario Lopez here. You may

(09:13):
remember today's guest from the show Dirty Jobs on the
Discovery Channel. It's Mike Rowe, who's got a new road
trip documentary. It's all about some forgotten parts of American history.
We're gonna find out all about it. After a few
more songs to me all, Mario Lopez joining me now
on Zoom from Dirty Jobs. In the new movie Something
to Stand For, mister Mike Rowe, welcome to show. Mike,

(09:33):
how have you been?

Speaker 4 (09:35):
I am living the dream or whatever? This is, my friend,
Well you're looking good.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Congratulations on the new film Something to Stand For. It's
part drama. How's it work?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
You know?

Speaker 6 (09:49):
People keep asking me, and the best I can come
up with is it's somewhere between a documentary and saving
Private Ryan. But it's not either of those things. It's
really nine short mysteries that I have written over the
years from my podcast that are all super patriotic in nature,
all got it adapted for the big screen. But I

(10:11):
say mysteries because each story tells you something you didn't
know about somebody you do, and as the story's unfold,
you get to try and figure out who I'm talking about.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
In this case, it's always going to.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
Be a man or woman who had something to do
with shaping our country. So it's basically an Independence Day
special with a little bit of mystery. Three hundred actors,
all of whom came from Oklahoma, by the way, and
some scripts that would not exactly be best described as

(10:48):
a Hollywood production.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
If that makes.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Sense, makes total sense, and it sounds awesome. I want
to know all about it, but we got to take
a little break. I'm gonna have more with Mike Rowe
in just a moment.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
More fun on the way on what the Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Mario Lopez here. My guest today is Mike Rowe, whose
new history doc is called Something to Stand For? So
which stories did you decide to focus on? Was it
hard narrowing it down?

Speaker 6 (11:11):
No, it wasn't hard narrowing the stories down. What's been
a challenge, and I know you'll appreciate this. Doing what
you do is figuring out how to promote a movie
without spoiling the end nine times over. It's like, you know,
if this were the sixth sense, I couldn't very well
tell you And you'll love it. At the end when
he realizes he's been dead the whole movie, right, You're like,

(11:33):
oh no, no, you can't. It's hard to promote a mystery. Well,
what I can tell you is it's a really weird
and fun mix of very deliberate storytelling, which these stories
are right, but it's interspersed with this bizarre field trip
to our capital where I reacquaint myself with the memorials

(11:55):
and the monuments and some of the statuary that was
built to celebrate the people in the movie. What happens
during that part of the film is totally unscripted, Like
I run into people at Arlington, the National Cemetery. I
ran into an old man at the World War Two Memorial,
ninety one year old Korean War veteran. They're on an

(12:17):
honor flight, but half a dozen other old guys. And
this wasn't supposed to be in the movie. But when
you see a ninety one year old man with tears
running down his face as he sits there in front
of that wall of stars, contemplating the men who died
for him, I mean, if you don't take your camera
and go over there and talk to that guy, you're

(12:38):
just a schmuck.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
You know, that's part of being an artist, and you're
absolutely right. You have to recognize it first and be
willing to adapt and sort of manipulate navigate. I should
say your film that sounds really cool. History is my
favorite subject, so I'm sure I'm gonna find this incredibly fascinating.
Something to stand for is out now, Hold on, Mike
got to play more music. Mario Lopez here talking about

(12:59):
the new talk Something to Stand For with its filmmaker
Mike Rowe. So, are there more stories you'd like to share?
Could there possibly be more movies in the works?

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (13:09):
Yeah, Well, I mean I've got I've written about two
hundred and fifty of these and they did really well
on a podcast called The Way I Heard It that
turned into a book. The book turned into a TV
show called The Story Behind the Story. And now Hollywood is,
or maybe Hollywood adjacent, is looking at all of these

(13:29):
things and saying, you know something, the country, like, the
film business is tough right now. I don't have to
tell you that, right It's tough to get a hit.
It's tough to promote a hit. The theaters themselves are
on the ropes. They're all trying to figure out how
to get butts and seats and so forth. And I
think this old style of storytelling, this Paul Harvey, Charles Carrault,

(13:53):
George Plimpton, Studs Turcle, some of these, by the way,
I can't fill their shoes. I'm trying to follow their footsteps.
But a real simple, fun, deliberate way to tell a
tale for the curious mind with a short attention span.
If you can get that onto the big screen, then
you've got something new.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
And that's what this looks like.

Speaker 6 (14:15):
So to answer your question, yeah, I got something to
work for, something to hope for, or just something to
stand for parts two, three, four.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
Five, and six. Because I got stories, Mario, Oh, I
got stories.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing them. It must be
such a fun, gratifying process, and I think it definitely
is an audience for that. So congratulations, Mike. All right,
we got to play some more music right now, Yo,
Mario Lopez. My guess is Mike Rove from a new movie,
something to Stand For? And you mentioned your podcast the
way I heard it. Where can people find it? Who

(14:47):
have you been talking to? What can we look forward to?

Speaker 6 (14:50):
So that started about seven years ago with these short stories,
and you can listen to it wherever you listen to
podcast whereverywhere. In fact, my producer just told me we
hit three hundred a million downloads, So I congratulations, Like
there's a big underserved audience for classic storytelling, you know.
So we do that there, but I also interview people who, frankly,

(15:14):
not a lot of celebrities. I'm more drawn to people
I've met on the show over the years who are
doing something that I think is really interesting or laudable.
I mean, honestly, I've had five shows, Mario, They're all
the same. I just changed the title every seven or
eight years. But essentially it's people you should know.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
You know.

Speaker 6 (15:37):
I tapped the country on the shoulder and say, man,
what about him? What about her? Get a load of that,
And that's what's worked for me, and I hope it
works on the big screen as well as a podcast.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, they're more fascinating anyway. I agree. Well, one more
thing I want to ask you, but first we got
to take a little break. I'm gonna wrap it up
with Mike Rowe in just a moment.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
We are the full interview now at on with Mario Dunco.
More Mario Lopez on the Ohay.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Mario Lopez here wrapping things up with Mike Grove and
the new doc's Something to Stand For And Mike, you
got about the coolest pipes around. Is it true you
were once an opera singer?

Speaker 4 (16:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (16:12):
Yeah, really, Uh yeah, that was back in nineteen eighty three.
I was trying to get my SAG card and I
actually I was trying to get an agent because I
knew I wanted to work in entertainment, but no agent
would sign me unless I was in the Guild, and
I couldn't get in the Guild if I didn't have
an agent. So it was like this weird catch twenty

(16:33):
two thing. So there's a loophole that you'll love if
you can. If you can get your AGMA card the
American Guild of Musical Artists, you can buy your SAG card.
You just pay your dues and you get in. Okay,
it's his sister union. AGMA oversees the opera world. So

(16:54):
that was like the stage door for me. I learned
the shortest aria I could find in a Italian and
I crashed an open call last Thursday of every month
for the National Opera, Baltimore Opera, and I got in.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
I was twenty two.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
That's awesome. Yeah, you still do any singing?

Speaker 4 (17:14):
Well.

Speaker 6 (17:14):
The funny thing was, I thought I'd just do one
show and then kind of get out of there. I
was just in the chorus, you know, I mostly you know,
carried a spear and sang real low.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
But the music was better than I thought.

Speaker 6 (17:28):
And the girls, dude, yeah, girls were just everywhere.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
Yeah, the guys by and large weren't really into the girls.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
Right.

Speaker 6 (17:37):
Girls were awesome and I was dressed up like a
pirate or a viking. You know, it's too early to
take a victory left, but let's just say I stayed
in the opera for eight years.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
That's awesome. That's awesome. Hey, Mike, it's always great talking.
I appreciate you taking the time and listen. Something to
Stand For is in theaters now. Be sure to check
it out.

Speaker 4 (17:59):
Mike, Thanks, y out anytime. Mar I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Mario Lopez with a reason to strap on a VR headset.
We got an exclusive performance in interview with Imagine Dragons.
They performed the single Eyes Closed in celebration of the
new album Loom. You can watch it in virtual reality
on Meta Horizon worlds Now, all right, let's get back
to the music, John, Mario Lopez, and Selene Dion is

(18:24):
secretly planning her comeback on with Mario Hollywood Buzz. So
it's been four years since Selene Dion has performed due
to her battle with stiff person syndrome, but we're hearing
that she's getting ready for her return. Word is she's
been privately preparing for a limited run of shows at
Resorts World in Vegas this fall. The shows are going

(18:44):
to be seventy minutes long, so they're quick and snappy,
and they're on the books for November. But she's keeping
an open mind and a flexible schedule. If her health
issues return, she's not going to push her body. She'll
just move the dates to later in the year. If
you haven't had a chance to check out her document,
he oh my gosh, it's so it's so moving, and
she's such a such a sweet, beautiful person, and I

(19:07):
just feel so bad with everything she's gone through. But man,
she was really brave to kind of put that all
out there. So glad to hear she's going to be
back performing Mario Lopez. You're Mario Lopez time.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Number one.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Last thing. Kevin Bacon has been a household name for
the last forty years, so he wanted to find out
what it was like to just blend in with the crowd.
So he went to a makeup artist who made him
a prosthetic disguise. Then he went to the Grove, which
is right here in La to see what it was like.
That's like a big shopping center, outdoor restaurants and stuff. Well,
Kevin says it sucked. People were pushing past him. They

(19:39):
were not being nice. He even had to wait in
line to buy coffee. Can you imagine what he says?
He takes some of the perks of being famous for granted, boy, Kevin,
you really roughed it out, buddy. By the way, prayers
up for Kevin Bacon. Everyone prayers up. Let me just
say I about is he serious? Is he being serious?
Oh my gosh.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
So fifteen years ago, I was working on a different
show for our company and I walked over to grab
some lunch from the Sherman Oaks GALLERYA and sitting on
a bench in the middle of just the outside walking
area was Kevin Bacon, just sitting there like he was
waiting on someone. When got my food came walking back by,
he was still sitting there.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Yes, Kevin might be. He's been blending in.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Don't trip Kevin or Mario Lopez coming up?

Speaker 2 (20:29):
All right, I'm out here, but I'm back tomorrow with
a good deed of the week and another case in
Courtney's court. Until then, Mario Lopez saying good night.
