a bit refreshed after our vacation down in Mexico. We
were in beautiful Cabo San Lucas, which was described as
palm springs with a beach basically a beach you can't
really go into. They have the strongest undercurrents. They say
that's where the world ends, because you'll go maybe five
feet out and then it drops like a mile. It

is crazy to draw and you can't swim in certain beaches.
You have to go to other beaches where it's a
little more of a bay because it's so strong. They
don't allow it. It will pull you out, and they've
had accents that's awful. I'm not really selling hobo. So
I'm so relaxing and I'm stressful at all. I'm so
used to just jumping in the ocean. That's the one

little thing that kind of bothers me. But other than that,
great family time was just my wife and I and
the kids and Sonny's birthday. Sonny's birthday, he's now five
years old? Did we skip four? I feel like we
skipped me. Well, he's a COVID kid, so he was
kind of hidden for a couple of years, right, and
that's why he's, you know, taking a minute to kind

of to get his wheels kind of going. But he's
all he's all rare to go. And it was nice spending.
I spend a lot of quality time with my daughter,
which you got to cherish at this point in her life.
But all at all, we're happy to be back.

don't ride motor I rode JRT bikes when I was

were kids, had a really bad accident. We thought he
was gone any of there's damaging his leg and that

summer of family movies continues to make bank at the
box office. People are really loving Family of Fair which
I love to see. Despicable Me four has earned more
than one hundred and twenty five million in its first
week in North America. Great news for Universal and more
than a quarter billion around the world. And the budget

was only one hundred million, so they made it back
in one weekend. How about that. By the way, that's
about half the budget of a Pixar movie. Good for them. Meanwhile,
speaking of Pixar, Inside Out two has become the fifth
highest grossing animated film of all time. Wow, with one
point two two billion. My kids saw it this past weekend.

trip documentary. It's all about some forgotten parts of American history.

I am living the dream or whatever? This is, my friend,

Congratulations on the new film Something to Stand For. It's
part drama. How's it work?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
You know?
Speaker 6 (09:49):
People keep asking me, and the best I can come
up with is it's somewhere between a documentary and saving
Private Ryan. But it's not either of those things. It's
really nine short mysteries that I have written over the
years from my podcast that are all super patriotic in nature,
all got it adapted for the big screen. But I
(10:11):
say mysteries because each story tells you something you didn't
know about somebody you do, and as the story's unfold,
you get to try and figure out who I'm talking about.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
In this case, it's always going to.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
Be a man or woman who had something to do
with shaping our country. So it's basically an Independence Day
special with a little bit of mystery. Three hundred actors,
all of whom came from Oklahoma, by the way, and
some scripts that would not exactly be best described as

a Hollywood production.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
If that makes.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Sense, makes total sense, and it sounds awesome. I want
to know all about it, but we got to take

Mario Lopez here. My guest today is Mike Rowe, whose
new history doc is called Something to Stand For? So
which stories did you decide to focus on? Was it
hard narrowing it down?
Speaker 6 (11:11):
No, it wasn't hard narrowing the stories down. What's been
a challenge, and I know you'll appreciate this. Doing what
you do is figuring out how to promote a movie
without spoiling the end nine times over. It's like, you know,
if this were the sixth sense, I couldn't very well
tell you And you'll love it. At the end when
he realizes he's been dead the whole movie, right, You're like,
(11:33):
oh no, no, you can't. It's hard to promote a mystery. Well,
what I can tell you is it's a really weird
and fun mix of very deliberate storytelling, which these stories
are right, but it's interspersed with this bizarre field trip
to our capital where I reacquaint myself with the memorials
(11:55):
and the monuments and some of the statuary that was
built to celebrate the people in the movie. What happens
during that part of the film is totally unscripted, Like
I run into people at Arlington, the National Cemetery. I
ran into an old man at the World War Two Memorial,
ninety one year old Korean War veteran. They're on an
(12:17):
honor flight, but half a dozen other old guys. And
this wasn't supposed to be in the movie. But when
you see a ninety one year old man with tears
running down his face as he sits there in front
of that wall of stars, contemplating the men who died
for him, I mean, if you don't take your camera
and go over there and talk to that guy, you're
(12:38):
just a schmuck.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
You know, that's part of being an artist, and you're
absolutely right. You have to recognize it first and be
willing to adapt and sort of manipulate navigate. I should
say your film that sounds really cool. History is my
favorite subject, so I'm sure I'm gonna find this incredibly fascinating.

Mike Rowe. So, are there more stories you'd like to share?
Could there possibly be more movies in the works?

Oh?

Yeah, Well, I mean I've got I've written about two
hundred and fifty of these and they did really well
on a podcast called The Way I Heard It that
turned into a book. The book turned into a TV
show called The Story Behind the Story. And now Hollywood is,
or maybe Hollywood adjacent, is looking at all of these
(13:29):
things and saying, you know something, the country, like, the
film business is tough right now. I don't have to
tell you that, right It's tough to get a hit.
It's tough to promote a hit. The theaters themselves are
on the ropes. They're all trying to figure out how
to get butts and seats and so forth. And I
think this old style of storytelling, this Paul Harvey, Charles Carrault,
(13:53):
George Plimpton, Studs Turcle, some of these, by the way,
I can't fill their shoes. I'm trying to follow their footsteps.
But a real simple, fun, deliberate way to tell a
tale for the curious mind with a short attention span.
If you can get that onto the big screen, then
you've got something new.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
And that's what this looks like.
Speaker 6 (14:15):
So to answer your question, yeah, I got something to
work for, something to hope for, or just something to
stand for parts two, three, four.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Five, and six. Because I got stories, Mario, Oh, I
got stories.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing them. It must be
such a fun, gratifying process, and I think it definitely
is an audience for that. So congratulations, Mike. All right,

way I heard it. Where can people find it? Who

have you been talking to? What can we look forward to?

So that started about seven years ago with these short stories,
and you can listen to it wherever you listen to
podcast whereverywhere. In fact, my producer just told me we
hit three hundred a million downloads, So I congratulations, Like
there's a big underserved audience for classic storytelling, you know.
So we do that there, but I also interview people who, frankly,
(15:14):
not a lot of celebrities. I'm more drawn to people
I've met on the show over the years who are
doing something that I think is really interesting or laudable.
I mean, honestly, I've had five shows, Mario, They're all
the same. I just changed the title every seven or
eight years. But essentially it's people you should know.

You know.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
I tapped the country on the shoulder and say, man,
what about him? What about her? Get a load of that,
And that's what's worked for me, and I hope it
works on the big screen as well as a podcast.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, they're more fascinating anyway. I agree. Well, one more
thing I want to ask you, but first we got

were once an opera singer?

Yeah?

Yeah, really, Uh yeah, that was back in nineteen eighty three.
I was trying to get my SAG card and I
actually I was trying to get an agent because I
knew I wanted to work in entertainment, but no agent
would sign me unless I was in the Guild, and
I couldn't get in the Guild if I didn't have
an agent. So it was like this weird catch twenty
(16:33):
two thing. So there's a loophole that you'll love if
you can. If you can get your AGMA card the
American Guild of Musical Artists, you can buy your SAG card.
You just pay your dues and you get in. Okay,
it's his sister union. AGMA oversees the opera world. So
(16:54):
that was like the stage door for me. I learned
the shortest aria I could find in a Italian and
I crashed an open call last Thursday of every month
for the National Opera, Baltimore Opera, and I got in.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
I was twenty two.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
That's awesome. Yeah, you still do any singing?
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Well.
Speaker 6 (17:14):
The funny thing was, I thought I'd just do one
show and then kind of get out of there. I
was just in the chorus, you know, I mostly you know,
carried a spear and sang real low.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
But the music was better than I thought.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
And the girls, dude, yeah, girls were just everywhere.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Yeah, the guys by and large weren't really into the girls.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Right.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
Girls were awesome and I was dressed up like a
pirate or a viking. You know, it's too early to
take a victory left, but let's just say I stayed
in the opera for eight years.
Speaker 2 (17:49):

and they're on the books for November. But she's keeping
an open mind and a flexible schedule. If her health
issues return, she's not going to push her body. She'll
just move the dates to later in the year. If

she's such a such a sweet, beautiful person, and I

just feel so bad with everything she's gone through. But man,

Kevin says it sucked. People were pushing past him. They

were not being nice. He even had to wait in
line to buy coffee. Can you imagine what he says?
He takes some of the perks of being famous for granted, boy, Kevin,
you really roughed it out, buddy. By the way, prayers

summer of family movies continues to make bank at the
box office. People are really loving Family of Fair which
I love to see. Despicable Me four has earned more

week in North America. Great news for Universal and more
than a quarter billion around the world. And the budget

was only one hundred million, so they made it back
in one weekend. How about that. By the way, that's
about half the budget of a Pixar movie. Good for them. Meanwhile,
speaking of Pixar, Inside Out two has become the fifth

Congratulations on the new film Something to Stand For. It's
part drama. How's it work?

You know?

People keep asking me, and the best I can come
up with is it's somewhere between a documentary and saving
Private Ryan. But it's not either of those things. It's
really nine short mysteries that I have written over the
years from my podcast that are all super patriotic in nature,
all got it adapted for the big screen. But I

say mysteries because each story tells you something you didn't
know about somebody you do, and as the story's unfold,
you get to try and figure out who I'm talking about.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
In this case, it's always going to.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
Be a man or woman who had something to do
with shaping our country. So it's basically an Independence Day
special with a little bit of mystery. Three hundred actors,
all of whom came from Oklahoma, by the way, and
some scripts that would not exactly be best described as

a Hollywood production.

If that makes.

Sense, makes total sense, and it sounds awesome. I want
to know all about it, but we got to take

Mario Lopez here. My guest today is Mike Rowe, whose
new history doc is called Something to Stand For? So
which stories did you decide to focus on? Was it
hard narrowing it down?
Speaker 6 (11:11):
No, it wasn't hard narrowing the stories down. What's been
a challenge, and I know you'll appreciate this. Doing what
you do is figuring out how to promote a movie
without spoiling the end nine times over. It's like, you know,
if this were the sixth sense, I couldn't very well
tell you And you'll love it. At the end when
he realizes he's been dead the whole movie, right, You're like,
(11:33):
oh no, no, you can't. It's hard to promote a mystery. Well,
what I can tell you is it's a really weird
and fun mix of very deliberate storytelling, which these stories
are right, but it's interspersed with this bizarre field trip
to our capital where I reacquaint myself with the memorials
(11:55):
and the monuments and some of the statuary that was
built to celebrate the people in the movie. What happens
during that part of the film is totally unscripted, Like
I run into people at Arlington, the National Cemetery. I
ran into an old man at the World War Two Memorial,
ninety one year old Korean War veteran. They're on an
(12:17):
honor flight, but half a dozen other old guys. And
this wasn't supposed to be in the movie. But when
you see a ninety one year old man with tears
running down his face as he sits there in front
of that wall of stars, contemplating the men who died
for him, I mean, if you don't take your camera
and go over there and talk to that guy, you're
(12:38):
just a schmuck.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
You know, that's part of being an artist, and you're
absolutely right. You have to recognize it first and be
willing to adapt and sort of manipulate navigate. I should
say your film that sounds really cool. History is my
favorite subject, so I'm sure I'm gonna find this incredibly fascinating.

Mike Rowe. So, are there more stories you'd like to share?
Could there possibly be more movies in the works?

Yeah, Well, I mean I've got I've written about two
hundred and fifty of these and they did really well
on a podcast called The Way I Heard It that
turned into a book. The book turned into a TV
show called The Story Behind the Story. And now Hollywood is,
or maybe Hollywood adjacent, is looking at all of these
(13:29):
things and saying, you know something, the country, like, the
film business is tough right now. I don't have to
tell you that, right It's tough to get a hit.
It's tough to promote a hit. The theaters themselves are
on the ropes. They're all trying to figure out how
to get butts and seats and so forth. And I
think this old style of storytelling, this Paul Harvey, Charles Carrault,
(13:53):
George Plimpton, Studs Turcle, some of these, by the way,
I can't fill their shoes. I'm trying to follow their footsteps.
But a real simple, fun, deliberate way to tell a
tale for the curious mind with a short attention span.
If you can get that onto the big screen, then
you've got something new.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
And that's what this looks like.
Speaker 6 (14:15):
So to answer your question, yeah, I got something to
work for, something to hope for, or just something to
stand for parts two, three, four.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Five, and six. Because I got stories, Mario, Oh, I
got stories.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing them. It must be
such a fun, gratifying process, and I think it definitely
is an audience for that. So congratulations, Mike. All right,

way I heard it. Where can people find it? Who

have you been talking to? What can we look forward to?

So that started about seven years ago with these short stories,
and you can listen to it wherever you listen to
podcast whereverywhere. In fact, my producer just told me we
hit three hundred a million downloads, So I congratulations, Like
there's a big underserved audience for classic storytelling, you know.
So we do that there, but I also interview people who, frankly,
(15:14):
not a lot of celebrities. I'm more drawn to people
I've met on the show over the years who are
doing something that I think is really interesting or laudable.
I mean, honestly, I've had five shows, Mario, They're all
the same. I just changed the title every seven or
eight years. But essentially it's people you should know.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
You know.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
I tapped the country on the shoulder and say, man,
what about him? What about her? Get a load of that,
And that's what's worked for me, and I hope it
works on the big screen as well as a podcast.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, they're more fascinating anyway. I agree. Well, one more
thing I want to ask you, but first we got

got about the coolest pipes around. Is it true you
were once an opera singer?
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (16:12):
Yeah, really, Uh yeah, that was back in nineteen eighty three.
I was trying to get my SAG card and I
actually I was trying to get an agent because I
knew I wanted to work in entertainment, but no agent
would sign me unless I was in the Guild, and
I couldn't get in the Guild if I didn't have
an agent. So it was like this weird catch twenty
(16:33):
two thing. So there's a loophole that you'll love if
you can. If you can get your AGMA card the
American Guild of Musical Artists, you can buy your SAG card.
You just pay your dues and you get in. Okay,
it's his sister union. AGMA oversees the opera world. So
(16:54):
that was like the stage door for me. I learned
the shortest aria I could find in a Italian and
I crashed an open call last Thursday of every month
for the National Opera, Baltimore Opera, and I got in.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
I was twenty two.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
That's awesome. Yeah, you still do any singing?
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Well.
Speaker 6 (17:14):
The funny thing was, I thought I'd just do one
show and then kind of get out of there. I
was just in the chorus, you know, I mostly you know,
carried a spear and sang real low.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
But the music was better than I thought.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
And the girls, dude, yeah, girls were just everywhere.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Yeah, the guys by and large weren't really into the girls.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Right.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
Girls were awesome and I was dressed up like a
pirate or a viking. You know, it's too early to
take a victory left, but let's just say I stayed
in the opera for eight years.
Speaker 2 (17:49):

been privately preparing for a limited run of shows at
Resorts World in Vegas this fall. The shows are going

to be seventy minutes long, so they're quick and snappy,
and they're on the books for November. But she's keeping
an open mind and a flexible schedule. If her health
issues return, she's not going to push her body. She'll
just move the dates to later in the year. If

she's such a such a sweet, beautiful person, and I

just feel so bad with everything she's gone through. But man,
she was really brave to kind of put that all

the last forty years, so he wanted to find out
what it was like to just blend in with the crowd.
So he went to a makeup artist who made him

is right here in La to see what it was like.
That's like a big shopping center, outdoor restaurants and stuff. Well,
Kevin says it sucked. People were pushing past him. They

were not being nice. He even had to wait in
line to buy coffee. Can you imagine what he says?
He takes some of the perks of being famous for granted, boy, Kevin,
you really roughed it out, buddy. By the way, prayers
up for Kevin Bacon. Everyone prayers up. Let me just
say I about is he serious? Is he being serious?

So fifteen years ago, I was working on a different
show for our company and I walked over to grab
some lunch from the Sherman Oaks GALLERYA and sitting on
a bench in the middle of just the outside walking
area was Kevin Bacon, just sitting there like he was
waiting on someone. When got my food came walking back by,
he was still sitting there.
